hen asked to picture a figurehead of the British fashion design world, the vivacious fuchsia-haired Zandra Rhodes promptly comes to mind. So it’s a privilege to meet the ‘Princess of Punk’ in her bright, quirky and altogether penthouse. Awarded London fabulous a Commander of the British Empire for her efforts in the fashion industry, the designer has permanently printed of her mark on the international world textiles.

At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field. Unperturbed, the designer made dresses from her own fabrics, embedding printed textiles within her craft. “One of my first struggles was the fact that I was a textile designer,” she explains if with a laugh. “People would say that you’re a textile designer then you can’t a make dresses. So I suppose that was revolution.” an This revolution, in bringing together eye for both design and production, secured Rhodes’ assimilation into the fashion world. A BIT of a DO BLAME BOB Glam up your bob and add some movement and texture

1 Prep your hair

with a root lift spray – try not to overload the hair too much.

Let your hair down with these glamorous party dos, recreated with a little hair boosting know-how from Gianni Greco of Moda Greco Hair Designers.

2 Dry the product into the hair with a hairdryer, lifting each section to create as much volume and lift as you can.

KILLER CURLS Luscious, voluminous curl to get heads turning

1 Prep the hair with a volumising foam and dry into the hair.

2 Create a middle parting with a tail comb.

3 Using a curling tong – I’m a fan of

ghd Curve tongs - take a section of hair and twist-wrap around the barrel. A twist-wrap is where you twist the hair each time you wrap it around the tong, creating a more defined curl. Repeat, curling up towards the parting.

4 Dress out the hair with a

detangling comb or your fingers and finish with a shine spray for a high gloss finish.

3 Once the hair is dry, use a curl hold spray on every section of the hair.

STRAIGHT & NARROW

4 Using a styler – I swear by ghd Platinum styler - place vertically at the root and rotate 360° as you glide through to the ends. Repeat, alternating the direction you turn the styler. This will give you more of a textured wave.

1 Prep damp hair with smoothing cream or spray. 2 Blow-dry using a hairdryer and a paddle brush.

Take small sections and move the brush and dryer slowly for maximum level of shine.

5 Dress the curls out using a detangling comb or your fingers.

3 Create a centre parting with a tail comb. 4 Section hair and smooth over with your styler. 5 Lightly spray your paddle with a shine spray and gently brush

It’s finally here; the presents are all wrapped and under the tree, the house is groaning with food and your family are gathered together. Bliss. Or is it, asks Kirsty France. We all know that Christmas is meant to be family time, but by Boxing Day it can become a bit of a strain. Enjoy the build up

Let’s face it, Christmas Eve is the best thing about Christmas. Everyone’s feeling festive and you can dish up cheese on toast, a mince pie and some Quality Street and still be treated as a domestic goddess. It’s also perfectly acceptable to go to a carol service then head to the pub. The kids will go to bed on time because Santa won’t come until they’re asleep. They might be old enough to suspect that Father Christmas

is actually you, but you can bet they won’t risk it.

You can still invite the whole family along but if you and your other half walk faster than everyone else you could get some alone time. A good walk clears your head and seeing daylight will boost your mood, plus help work off some of those excess calories…remember those Ferrero Rocher you inhaled?

Entertain the troops

Don’t be afraid to turn on the TV. Even if you only get a kids’ movie it’ll usually be one that the rest of the family can tolerate. Or fall asleep in front of. The only disadvantage is if any of your relatives are a bit deaf. The hard of hearing can need the volume turned up so ear-splittingly loud you could hear it on the moon. And if all else fails, play some games. We had bingo crackers last year and my five year old won most of the prizes. It might seem cheesy but they can be great fun. BE MERRY Let’s face it Christmas is meant to be celebrated and it’s a well-known fact that calories consumed on C-Day will neither be judged, nor counted. But if you want to avoid a tofu-hugging January it’s probably best not to go overboard says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts.

Don’t be too saucy. Gravy, cranberry and bread sauces all add additional calories. Use sparingly or in the case of bread sauce avoid altogether and knock 50 calories off your meal.

Savour your food. Eating more slowly will help you enjoy your food more, eat less and stop you going back for more, saving you up to 100 calories.

In theory a traditional roast is pretty well-balanced and not unhealthy. But at Christmas it’s what comes before and after, plus all those little extras and larger than normal portions, swilled down with wine, that’s the problem. In some cases adding as much as 6,000 calories to your daily intake. So whether you’re cooking a meal at home or eating out this year, here are my top 12 tips to help you cut calories this Christmas… Lay off the alcohol. Well until dinner anyway. Make your pre dinner drink a glass of sparkling water or soda. By delaying the first glass of wine you’ll save 150 calories. Pass on the bread. As tempting as it is, if you can skip this temptation, you can save yourself 100 calories, plus save room for the rest of the meal. Calorie calculations are estimates only

Opt for a light starter. Soup (without the bread) or fish (without the sauce) are both choices which could save you 200 calories. Ditch or share a starter and you’ll save even more. Say no to stuffing. It’s generally made with sausage meat and even a small amount can add 150 calories. If you must have it, opt for a less calorific chestnut alternative instead. Count your little piggies. There’s no denying that pigs-in-blankets are delicious but try to have just one. At 50 calories per little piggy, cutting back can make a difference. Eat plenty of vegetables. We all love a roast potato but if you’re going to indulge stick to just 1 or 2. Fill your plate instead with other vegetables and save over 100 calories.

Keep knocking it back. The water that is. Not only will it help you not overeat but it will also save you 250 calories on those extra alcoholic drinks you’ll avoid. Remember Christmas is for sharing. For some dessert is the hardest to resist. There are healthier choices but let’s face it they don’t taste as good, so opt for sharing one instead. Keep your spirits up. If you are going to indulge in an after dinner drink, stick to white spirits and low kcal mixers. Swap your wine for a vodka, lime & soda and save 50 calories per drink. Be more active. Don't spend the evening sitting and drinking, stand and socialise. And if there’s music do get up and dance. Being more active can burn off over 250 calories. URBAN FOX DECEMBER 2016 25

It’s a numbers game

Begin planning as early as you can, as people get booked up quickly at this time of year. In terms of numbers calculate how many people your space can accommodate. On average 60% of those invited will show up, increasing to around 75% if you’re inviting only close friends. There will always be last minute cancellations so invite one extra guest for every 10 people that have said they’re coming. And if it’s important to have an equal numbers of men and women, invite more men as they tend to show up less. And should fewer people than expected show up, just put the music on louder and have some extra drinks to hand. If you have an air of defeat, the party will too.

Buy, make or print your own invitations or keep it simple and use e-Invites. They’re cheaper, easier to send and

enable you to keep track of the RSVPs. ‘Simple Soiree’ is an app that will help you to create guest lists, send out invites by email, receive RSVPs and plan food. It’s a steal at £1.49 and there’s a free ‘lite’ version too. If you’re going down the theme route – kitsch, festive or elegant – and dress code is important, include it on the invitations. Also if you want guests to leave by a certain time, add an end time too. That way you don’t have to put on your PJs and it helps guests avoid that awkward ‘who will leave first’ scenario.

If you’re hosting the party at home, arrange furniture so that guests can move around the room easily. Although most people will mingle, do allow seating for up to 15% of your guests. If your space is small use a large centre table to serve food on, but if you have a large room, use multiple small tables to create mini food stations. This will encourage guests to move around the room more and

not cluster in one area. Lighting helps establish the mood, so avoid unflattering overhead lights and use mood-enhancing candlelight, table and floor lamps instead. Finally music will help your guests relax, so put together a playlist that matches your theme or the atmosphere you want to create.

Eat, drink, be merry

You don’t want your guest to go home hungry so ensure there are sufficient canapés for everyone. Over a 4 hour period (assuming guests will have eaten before they arrive) cater for five or six types of canapés with guests eating one or two of each. On the booze front, on average each guest will drink two drinks in the first hour and one drink each hour after that. Punch bowls are a great way of serving a “welcome” cocktail or opt for a signature drink to fit with your theme. In terms of how much to buy, a 75cl bottle of Champagne serves 6 glasses and allow a bottle of wine per eight people, remembering white is typically more popular than red. Chill bottles at least 2 hours before. Finally don’t feel you have to overachieve – nobody is checking for dirt (although a spotless bathroom is a good idea); if people have a drink in their hand, food to eat, are warm, and there is some music on, you’re doing OK. CORONATION CHICKEN POTATO SKINS Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 30-40 minutes Makes: 24 Ingredients: 12 small Charlotte potatoes 1 tbsp olive oil 2 x 170g packs essential Waitrose Coronation Chicken Deli Filler 1 red or green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped, optional Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish

Christmas crankiness may be a mainstay of festive films, but that’s for good reason – setting the seasonal scene with a dose of the grumps has consistently proved effective. In this year’s surefire hit, Office Christmas Party, it’s Jennifer Aniston’s turn to play for those lamentable laughs. “I’m like the Grinch, who wants to steal Christmas away from these hardworking employees who are not doing as good a job as they should be doing,” she says. “I know that I’m right. I just don’t go about it the right way!” In reality, the 47-year-old is irrepressibly breezy and upbeat; something of a miracle considering the beating she has taken from the media over the last decade. Relentless scrutiny of her appearance, pregnancy status and of course relationships would drive a lesser person insane. Even the recent frenzy over her imagined delight at the divorce of ex-husband Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is offensive to a woman who has in her own words ‘worked too hard’ to be reduced to nothing but tabloid fodder. “I consider myself a very optimistic and positive person,” reveals Aniston. “I want to be able to be caring and understanding of the people I love and enjoy their company and spend good time with people. It’s so easy to find things to worry or complain about and I’ve learnt over the years that you don’t need to waste time being negative. You can choose to enjoy your life and not struggle so much.” Returning to her finest comedy form, Aniston plays a tough-minded CEO who is tasked with closing down an ailing branch of her company. She comes up against two hapless employees – including her Horrible Bosses co-star Jason Bateman – who are convinced an epic Christmas bash can save their jobs. “Jason and I have been friends for a long time. He’s one of the sweetest guys I’ve

ever known. We’ve always got along well together,” gushes the star. “I first met him when he was doing a TV show with a friend of mine and I was about 25 and he was in a very different headspace back then, but he was still delightful.” Aniston is hilarious as the uptight CEO and it’s refreshing to see her cut loose having become synonymous with playing the sweet, lovable girl-nextdoor since her breakout role on Friends. “I love exploring different kinds of characters, especially those with flaws or problems that we can all relate to,” she explains. “I also enjoy playing women who are both smart and have a big sense of humour. But I honestly try not to place limits on what I could do.”

Aniston was uncharacteristically un-glam in the film and refers to the experience as an ‘extraordinary challenge’. “It was important to me to finally be able to play a character that would allow me to explore much darker and deeper emotions than I’m normally given the chance to express,” she says. “I had started out in this business wanting to do dramas and then of course Friends came along and it took me down another path.” Does she feel resentment that people consistently expect her to be Rachel? “I’m very grateful for that role and to have been part of a show that is still loved today,” she says. “It was a gift for all of us, but Rachel seems like three lifetimes ago. I’m at a point in my life and career where I can say: who cares about my image!” In her private life, Aniston is now markedly more relaxed with her role in the public eye and is content in her relationship with actor Justin Theroux, whom she married last year. “We have

Cheats If the thought of cooking Christmas lunch brings out the Grinch in you, then cheat your way to a fun-filled, stress-free day. Shh…we won’t tell.

Christmas dinner is a feast in itself so ditch the starter and save the calories and the extra work. If you can’t resist then keep it simple…and cold – smoked salmon or even a kitsch 70’s prawn cocktail.

Turkey can be tricky to cook and takes up a lot of oven space. A joint of lamb or pork is smaller and can be slow-cooked. You can throw the veg into the same pan which makes it even easier.

If Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without a turkey, prepare it the day before. Opting for a turkey crown and cooking stuffing separately will also save time in the oven.

If you can’t fit everything in, cook the turkey first, then remove and cover in tin foil (to rest for up to an hour) while you make a start on the veggies.

Sideline some of the sides. The number of veg and accompaniments is not important, it’s the quality that counts. Concentrate on making just two or three great sides and avoid juggling those pots and pans.

Most veg can be prepared the day before. Peel and trim your carrots and parsnips (keep them in water overnight), and parboil your potatoes so they’re ready to go in the oven the next day.

Make vegetable prep easy. Don't buy Brussels on stalks and swap fresh for vacuum-packed chestnuts. Just pop them in water, and they're ready to go. Think of all the peeling you’ll avoid.

Cook as many vegetables can you can together. Boil peas and carrots in the same saucepan or do a Jamie Oliver style all-in-one roast veg tray of potatoes, carrots and parsnips.

Things can go wrong but don’t panic there’s usually a quick and tasty remedy. If you overcook the sprouts, strain them, pop in the processor with some cream, seasoning and grated nutmeg and Voila! Brussel Sprout Puree.

You don’t have to make everything from scratch, buy in

some things ready-made - gravy, sauces, dessert – no one will know. But do your own roasties as shop-bought ones generally don’t pass muster.

Make a list of everything you need to do - what you need to cook and when everything has to go into the oven. Cross off once completed so you can see at a glance where you are up to.

Avoid the stress of the supermarket and have Christmas lunch brought to your door. Aside from standard online shopping, some services will deliver everything you need, including the cooking instructions.

There is no rule saying you have to do it all yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask for help with peeling veg, laying the table or keeping everyone’s drinks (especially yours) topped up.

Don’t be pressured into an early lunch. Have a substantial breakfast, and leave the main event until 4pm-5pm. You’ll have longer to get things ready and spend more time with the kids and their toys.

Finally if you really can’t stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen, hire a professional chef or go out for dinner instead. It might cost more but a stress-free Christmas dinner is priceless. URBAN FOX DECEMBER 2016 59

Don’t you just love an Office Christmas Party? You arrive feeling extremely uncomfortable, drink your way through the small talk, before being subjected to Slade, Wizzard and Mariah playing on loop, followed by a clumsy pass from Barry in Accounts. It’s priceless, says Sarah Mettrick. The one bonus of being at home is not having to endure such events anymore (although I would pay to be a fly on the wall). Remembering office parties back in the nineties still brings a smile to my face. How good it is to be safe from the ‘beer fear’ the following morning. Did I really tell Derek he looks oddly attractive in his Hi-Vis works overalls? I blame it on the Archers and Coke not to mention knocking back those Slippery Nipples with the Telesales Team. Oh Lord, I remember climbing on the buffet table and gyrating to Eartha Kitt’s Santa Baby, only to get my heel caught in a chicken and mushroom vol-au-vent. Then you try to comfort yourself - It’s OK, Sandra from HR took a photocopy of her backside and faxed it to the Area Manager- that is so much worse! There is that unnerving moment when you first see your fellow colleagues out of their work clothes and in their

“Working in a small school means I am lucky to have time for every individual child”, says Early Years Teacher Ellie Chattaway. I was born and bred in Warwickshire the second of four girls. I spent the first 11 years of my life in a remote village called Spernal. My dad was a gamekeeper, so my sisters and I spent most of our childhood outside; playing with the animals, riding on quads, and generally not going inside until it was dark. My grandparents keepered on the same estate as my Dad, so I could often be found training my Grandpa’s dog with him. I was given my first dog 'Buzz' by a family friend and I can safely say it was her that trained me! We’d enter competitions and often come home with a prize rosette. I was hooked! We moved to Leicestershire when I was 11 after my Dad became Head Keeper on the Nevill Holt Estate. Although I continued to enjoy the outdoors – training my dogs, beating and shooting – my career ambition was to become a teacher. When the time came I applied to a university close to home, as I still had my dogs and other commitments. During the course of my degree I worked in a number of different schools across various age groups. My final placement was in Early Years Foundation Stage and I knew this was the right fit for me.

I was in America when a post at Hallaton School came up. It was just like the village school I grew up in, so the first thing I did when I arrived home was post my application. I was invited to go in for interview and thankfully got the job. Hallaton is a fantastic school with small class sizes, which means the children's needs get met, and as a teacher I am lucky to have time for each individual child. The teaching staff are close, and we all get to know the children really well during their time with us. Since being at the school I’ve achieved a teaching qualification for swimming and love taking my class to the local pool each week. For a small school Hallaton enjoys great academic and sporting success and it’s exciting to share in the children’s many achievements. As a teacher work-life balance can be difficult, even a trip to the supermarket inevitably leads to an extra bag of shopping for school. However, I try to do all my setting-up and resourcing in school, so when I get home I have time to spend with my dogs before I prep for the following day. My weekends are still very much spent outdoors, - beating on a shoot day, dog training and shows, working with the sheep and cows,

running, taking part in triathlons and charity bike rides – they’re jammed packed, but I wouldn't want it any other way. I’ll be spending Christmas at home this year with my family, my boyfriend Dan and the latest addition to the family, my 7-month old nephew Oliver. Christmas is full of tradition in the Chattaway household. A huge Christmas dinner followed by a quiz in the evening - cue lots of arguing and storming off! Never one to let the grass to grow under my feet, next year’s challenges include qualifying my Dalmatian, Dotty – original I know - for Crufts 2018, starting Canicross (running with dogs) and successfully completing an Ofsted inspection. Er…piece of cake!
