Protect yourself

Without doubt, protecting your eyes from the sun is the number one priority for sunglasses. Did you know 10% of all skin cancers occur on and around the eye lid areas and not protecting your eyes in the sunshine can increase your risk of macular degeneration? UV exposure also contributes to your risk of cataract and burns to the front of the eye, which can be very painful. So, choosing the right pair of sunglasses isn’t just about style, even though we want to look fabulous too!

Choose wisely

When it goes wrong, choosing sunglasses without the right protection or fit, can not only result in a fashion faux pas but can also increase the amount of UV light entering the eye as your pupil dilates through the darkened lens and causes more damage to the eye than not wearing sunglasses at all. So when choosing sunglasses always make sure they have 100% UVA and UVB protection. Don’t be tempted to buy from an unregistered seller. Remember to make sure they fit well across your nose and don’t slip forward. For good coverage, bigger is definitely better.

Face shape

Knowing how to choose the right shape frame for your face can feel like a difficult task. The general rule is to go for a shape of frame which is opposite to that of your face. Longer or angular faces need the softer shapes to help compliment their features. Rounder faces are generally more suited to an angular shape which can help create the illusion of more defined features. Miranda Kerr shows this fantastically with her choice of cat eye frames. However, rules can be broken, Victoria Beckham looks gorgeous in all shapes.

If 2016 was the year of the Wayfarer then 2017 is already proving to be all about the Aviator. Many variations of this classic trend are available with the brow line bars proving to be especially popular even on plastic frames. For those square faces, Chloé and Tom Ford have some amazing round shapes.

Weight Loss & Fat Burning

Water assists with losing weight in a number of ways.

 Drinking water increases satiety and fullness making you less likely to over consume. Drink 30 minutes before food to fill you up.  Studies have shown that drinking 500ml of water increases calorie burn up to 30% for 1.5 hours after. Last week I sat in my garden with a cuppa and contemplated whether I should carry on with the book I’ve started to write. Before I’d taken my first sip, doubt launched into my brain quicker than a wasp dive-bombing a jam sandwich. And then (hold tight this is the Blues Brothers “I have seen the light” back flip moment) I looked up to see glorious sunshine bouncing off flowers under a stunning blue sky. I frogmarched those pesky doubts out of my head and replaced them with self-belief, my fingers itching to hit the keyboard. If that day had been grey and miserable would I have felt so positive? Does the sun really make us feel happier? I would’ve said yes straight away, however I read that people can also get SAD as the summer season begins; shock, horror! How can this be? Flowers of all colours in bloom, long light days, men donning speedos and chilled Rosé hogging fridge space - surely this is happiness on a plate. For most though, when the sun shines, spirits are lifted and the world is a

Take men for example, the sun gets it’s hat on and they take their tops off - to visit the corner shop. Unless your torso resembles that of Daniel Craig this is a big no no. And how anything (even the sun) has the power to encourage

rocking up with the socks and sandals combo is beyond me. Then they crank up the barbecue and consider themselves contenders for Masterchef after serving up medium rare charred sausages and chicken a la salmonella.

I’m starting all over again but heh the sun is shining and apart from a minor limp all is good - my ‘Jake Blues’ back flip didn't go as well as anticipated.

SMOKEY CHIPOTLE CHICKEN Cooking time: 25 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 4 chicken breast fillets 4 whole sweetcorn 27g pack Bart Smokey Chipotle Rub 1 tbsp clear honey For the salsa: 400g can black eyed beans, drained and rinsed 4 salad onions, sliced 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Juice 1 lime

ut the chicken and P sweetcorn in the accompanying marinade bag with the chipotle rub and honey and give it a good shake to coat. Leave to marinate for at least 20 minutes.

o make the salsa, mix all T the ingredients together in a bowl and set aside.

reheat the oven to 190˚C, gas P mark 5. Put the marinade bag in a roasting tin and cook for 25 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through with no pink meat. Take care when opening the bag as the steam inside will be very hot. Serve with the salsa.

Cook’s tip: After removing from the bag, place chicken on the BBQ for a few minutes to get that charred taste.

ITALIAN-STYLE BURGERS Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 shallot, finely chopped 50g Gorgonzola, crumbled 454g British beef mince 25g pack fresh basil 4 tbsp Hellmann’s with Olive Oil 4 ciabatta rolls 70g pack wild rocket 2 tomatoes, sliced

Mix the shallot and Gorgonzola into the beef and shape into 4 even-sized burgers. Cook under a medium grill (or BBQ) for 7-8 minutes on each side until cooked through with no pink meat and nicely browned on the outside.

Cut the ciabatta rolls in half and lightly toast the cut-side. Pile the rocket and tomato on the bases and top with the burgers. Spoon over the basil dressing, top with the bun and serve.

Cook’s tip: If using a barbecue, chill the burgers for an hour to ensure they hold their shape while turning.

CIDER PORK KEBABS Cooking time: 25 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: ½ x 568ml bottle Stella Artois Cidre 4 tbsp maple syrup 4 cloves garlic, halved 8 sprigs thyme 420g British pork fillet, cubed 2 courgettes, thickly sliced 8 shallots, halved 1 red pepper, seeded and thickly sliced Olive oil spray

lace the cider in a large glass P bowl and stir in 2 tbsp of the maple syrup, the garlic cloves and half the thyme sprigs. Add the pork and leave to soak for at least an hour or overnight.

Cook’s tip: Metal skewers work best as it helps the meat to cook faster and they don’t burn on the grill.

SEĂ&#x2018;ORITA Having made her name in Hollywood, Salma Hayek has at long last joined forces with one of her birth nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest stars. Here she talks about finally speaking Spanish on-screen in America, the surprising effects of ageing, and what it really means to be a Latin lover.

When it comes to the inevitable annual polls to find the ‘sexiest stars in showbiz’, one thing is certain: Salma Hayek’s name is going to be in there somewhere. The voluptuous Velacruz-born actress has been a mainstay of cinema on both sides of the border since her Hollywood debut as a seductive succubus in Quentin Tarantino’s 1996 cult horror hit From Dusk till Dawn, but prior to being one of Tinseltown’s most coveted leading ladies, Hayek was a well-known face in her home country of Mexico. Now Hayek’s newest project, comedy How to Be a Latin Lover, has finally brought together her dual nationalities. Appearing alongside a shining star of Latin entertainment – Eugenio Derbez – and Hollywood heavyweights such as Raquel Welch and Rob Lowe, Hayek’s latest performance sees her speaking in her native tongue throughout the film. “It is paradise,” the 50-year-old says. “I have worked for so long and have become so accustomed to acting in English, I’m used to it but it feels like coming home. It feels like returning to yourself – to be able to think in Spanish, the freedom to just flow and improvise and really feel the words and never having to hesitate. I think in Spanish but have to translate all the time, so when I first started out it was horrible. I didn’t understand what I was saying! I had to learn some words phonetically and that was scary, but it’s a challenge and you push through. It’s much easier to me now, but I still hesitate; I still have to question my conviction and my instincts. It’s a hangup I’ll always have, I think.” Hayek’s undisputed cinematic magnum opus was her Academy Awardnominated performance in 2002’s biographical drama Frida, but while she has been raising the profile of Latin stars in America, her future co-star Derbez has been busy becoming the Spanishspeaking world’s most celebrated comedic actor – and entertaining Hayek and her Hispanic family along the way.

“To work with Eugenio, who I’ve wanted to work with for so long, was a dream for me,” she smiles. “He is one of the biggest names in Latin cinema. He’s a superstar – all my family love him. I would have said yes even if I hadn’t read the script! He is like a brother to me. And this was very difficult for Ken Marino, our director, because we would be speaking in Spanish and go off on these tangents and jokes and he would say, ‘What is happening? What did you guys say? Are you talking about me?’ He learned to accept it like it was. And the result is something that I’ve never seen before on film: a brother and a sister act that is very authentically Mexican.”

“With Latins, there is a lot of emotion, always bubbling underneath the surface, ready to explode.” The chance to work with one of her heroes, however, was not the only thing that drew Hayek to the project. “I feel now, the scripts are getting better and better as I’m getting older, which is a relief because it’s supposed to happen the other way,” she explains. “The looks, the appearance, it becomes less important. It’s not as obvious a factor. My looks helped me at the beginning of my career and maybe I would not be here without that, but now it matters less and less and that is only a good thing.” Some might scoff at the idea that the stunning Salma Hayek is any less beautiful now than she was decades ago, but the star herself says that her perennial place among the most beautiful women in cinema takes a lot of unseen upkeep – something that all ladies can surely sympathise with.

“You don’t see my face in the morning!” she laughs. “Or without the magic of talented make-up artists. You don’t see the effort. It’s all a show – all you have to do is peek behind it all to see reality. Of course I am lucky. I have Latin skin; it doesn’t age so fast. But I am also 50 years old. You have to age – that’s part of life. It’s happening slowly, but when I see the pictures of when I was younger… oh my God, I see it then. My face has changed. It’s become fuller and sags, but I don’t think I’m doing so badly!” Sex symbol or not, these days Hayek is far less concerned with the superficial stuff and much more interested in family matters. Married to French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, the couple have nine-year-old daughter Valentina to keep them on their toes. When it comes to her matriarchal role, Hayek likes to keep things traditional. “I am the most embarrassing mother,” she reveals. “Everything I do – ‘Oh Mam, why did you do this? Mam, please stop! Why did you say that? Why are you wearing that?’ It’s part of life, no? The irony is I’ve become my own mother, because she was the same. She was an opera singer and she would sing all the time in front of my friends; always practising, never stopping. That for a teenager is difficult to work with! Now Valentina is lucky because I can’t sing. I have spared her that pain.” It seems despite Hayek’s perceived parental shortcomings, the only way to really make Valentina uncomfortable would be to quiz her mother on what it actually means to be “a Latin lover”. “Oh God, I don’t know!” she laughs. “I’ve been with my husband for 11 years! But I think typically, the idea is that you must be very seductive and romantic; very passionate and very fiery. With Latins, there is a lot of emotion, always bubbling underneath the surface, ready to explode. And you also have to be adventurous and full of mischief and fun – Latins, we’ve endured so much, but we always have a smile on our face.”

It’s officially summer which means we should all be outside enjoying the sunshine, right? Unfortunately, in reality we’re much more likely to be staring out at a glorious sunny day whilst chained to our desks, says Kirsty France. Even though I work at home, I usually find that the sunniest days are the ones where I have masses of client work to finish. That means I have to be at my computer. I’ve tried hauling it outside but sunshine equals glare and I can’t see a thing! Over the years I’ve worked in every kind of office from windowless cubicles to open plan – here’s what I’ve learned so far.

DRESS CODE

Dressing for work in the summer can be a nightmare. There’s the office dress code to contend with and you still have to look professional for customers. The thought of having to wear a suit is enough to give you heat rash, so what do you do? I once worked in a cubicle in the middle of a building. There were no windows, no air conditioning and the temperature could easily top 32°C on a hot afternoon. I found that the best approach was to wear natural fabrics like cotton or linen. Keeping everything fairly loose and flowing meant that at least I could wear a sleeve without expiring. Sometimes I would just give in to the summer dress but take a light jacket to cover up when necessary.

Choosing linen has its pitfalls if you want to look professional – you could end up looking a bit crumpled by the afternoon so maybe schedule meetings for the morning.

TIPS & TRICKS

Sometimes even dressing for the weather isn’t enough. You just have to cope with the resources you have available. I once worked in an office where they banned fans. There was lots of computer equipment generating heat and they concluded that extra gadgets would only raise the temperature further.

Moving quickly in hot weather will only make you hotter. Unless you have to run for a train, slow down! I was tempted to invest in a ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ style hand held fan but I didn’t want to run the risk of accidentally propositioning the senior partner!

Instead, I took to lots and lots of cold drinks and ice lollies. Running my wrists under the cold tap worked a treat too – apparently there are lots of veins there which helps you to feel cooler generally. My hair’s quite short but lots of my colleagues also swore by putting their hair up.

SLOW DOWN

Moving quickly in hot weather will only make you hotter. Unless you have to run for a train, slow down! I often found that it felt cooler outside the office than inside so I always went out at lunchtime. As much as jumping into the water fountain appealed to me, I wasn’t convinced my boss (or the police) would be so amenable, so I’d try instead to find somewhere to just sit and watch the world go by. I’ve decided to adopt the same approach to the school run now, especially as the local pub has a bouncy castle!

If your dream of a bright, sun-drenched room is falling short, then a glass extension or structure might just be the answer. Here’s our top 13 tips on how to create the perfect room with a view.

Need more space but love your home? Then don’t move, improve. We look at 5 ways you can do more with what you have.

Incoming heat is also important so check the glass’s SHGC rating which measures how quickly a room will heat up if not sufficiently ventilated. Solarcontrol glazing can prevent garden rooms from overheating even when the sun is shining.

Know what you want. The terms ‘conservatory’, ‘garden room’ and ‘orangery’ can be interchangeable but typically a structure that’s entirely glazed is a conservatory while something partially glazed is a garden room or orangery. Sun rooms which are only partially glazed offer more space in terms of hanging mirrors, artwork etc. and can also make positioning furniture more straightforward. Stick to something that’s in keeping with the architecture of your home. A decorative orangery is more suited to a Victorian house rather than a contemporary property.

Choose a structure that will create maximum light. Roof lanterns add light with the bonus of increasing space and height, while skylights offer a more discreet way to maximise light. Plan any additional lighting requirements at the design stage. That way any unsightly wires can be hidden within the architectural framework.

The most popular materials are uPVC, aluminium and timber. What you choose will depend on the look you’re after. Remember to factor in any eco requirements and maintenance costs.

Conservatories don’t usually need planning permission as they come under ‘permitted development’. However listed properties and those in conservation areas may require permission. Consult your local planning authority first.

If you opt for a heavily glassed structure, ensure you have a good U-value. This measures how effective a material is as an insulator. The lower the U-value, the better the material is as a heat insulator.

Underfloor heating is a good option for conservatories, where you don’t have solid walls for radiators. Choose hard-wearing flooring such as stone or ceramic. They’re suitable for high traffic areas and will transfer underfloor heat efficiently.

Consider the impact the sun will have on your furnishings. A special coating on the glass itself or fitting blinds to the roof and sides, can help to reduce the UV light coming through. For soft furnishings opt for neutral fabrics in materials blended with polyester, nylon and acrylic, as they’re less prone to fading. If you like bright colours then stick with small-ticket accessories which can be easily replaced if they fade.

Wooden furniture is also susceptible to sun damage, so opt for lighter timbers or painted wood. Reposition your furniture from time to time and rearrange ornaments and lamps on the surfaces, to avoid obvious colour variances in the wood. URBAN FOX JUNE 2017 51

Rosenna East “Music is power!” says Rosenna East, General Manager at Nevill Holt Opera. I was brought up in a leafy suburb of London. We had a neighbour who was very enthusiastic about a music system called the ‘Suzuki’ method. It’s a Japanese philosophy that believes music is a universal language that can be taught to young children. So I got started on my tiny violin at 3 years old! I developed self-discipline, focus, strong memory and aural skills, and was playing concerts with my friends by the age of 4. Not long after that we were touring internationally as a small group. I can’t describe how much fun we had. As a teenager I didn’t want to be ‘professional’ and opted instead to do a History degree at Oxford. But after my studies I couldn’t bear the idea of giving up the violin to get a ‘proper job’, so I took a Masters at the Royal College of Music in London, and fell in love with the idea of playing in a Chamber Orchestra. Playing in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra was my perfect job. I spent 9 years living in Edinburgh and getting to know Scotland. Highlights included partnerships with conductors Sir Charles Mackerras and Robin Ticciati, and the recordings we made of the late Mozart symphonies will be something that I will be proud of my whole life. Performing with the SCO was truly exhilarating.

While still in the SCO, in 2013 I became Chair of the Board of a small opera company in Scotland called NOISE, commissioning and producing new operas. We won an Arts and Business Award for Entrepreneurship. In 2014 I heard about the GM job at Nevill Holt and I thought it sounded exciting! I was ready for a big change in my life, so I took the leap. My role includes organising and managing an opera festival at the beautiful Nevill Holt each summer. This year we are staging Puccini’s Tosca from 15 – 22 June, which will be fabulous. We’re also passionate about developing young singers, as well as contributing to the musical life of the community around us; so I am very proud that we’ll be staging our first children’s community opera – Britten’s Noye’s Fludde, on 1 & 2 July. It’ll be performed outdoors in the gorgeous gardens of Nevill Holt and will feature 130 local school children. I’ve been involved in music education my whole life! Music is power, it changes the way people feel. And if it can change the way people feel, it can change lives. If it can change lives, it can change whole communities. I’ve taught in specialised high-end music schools and schools where you’re lucky if they’ve got an egg-

shaker in the cupboard. I’ve put operas into prisons, pubs and village halls and I’ve taken my violin into post-conflict communities in Bosnia, Croatia, Sri Lanka and Palestine. For me the purpose of music is to connect people. What I enjoy most about being GM at Nevill Holt is interacting with a huge range of people, and creating moments for them to truly experience music. I hope I am a positive ambassador for our festival, and for the importance of live music in communities. I’m planning a good rest after this summer’s festival, before focussing on next year’s programme and the completion of our new theatre. We look forward to opening it to wild success in June 2018!
