hen asked to picture a figurehead of the British fashion design world, the vivacious fuchsia-haired Zandra Rhodes promptly comes to mind. So it’s a privilege to meet the ‘Princess of Punk’ in her bright, quirky and altogether penthouse. Awarded London fabulous a Commander of the British Empire for her efforts in the fashion industry, the designer has permanently printed of her mark on the international world textiles.

At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field.

Unperturbed, the designer made dresses from her own fabrics, embedding printed textiles within her craft.

“One of my first struggles was the fact that I was a textile designer,” she explains if with a laugh. “People would say that you’re a textile designer then you can’t a make dresses. So I suppose that was revolution.” an This revolution, in bringing together eye for both design and production, secured Rhodes’ assimilation into the fashion world. In 1967 she opened The Fulham Road Clothes Shop, in London.

So you’ve lost a few pounds with your “New Year, New You” resolutions, but the scales are already creeping back up. Why? The best way to any long term weight management is maintaining a healthy metabolism, says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts.

In approximately 95% of cases, dieting means reducing consumption. It doesn’t matter if you’re counting calories, counting points or restricting food types, the general idea is to consume less than before and therefore effect the energy balance of calories in, versus calories out.

However, the energy balance isn’t that simple. If you cut calories too much your body thinks it’s being starved and slows down its non-essential processes for its natural instinct of survival - slowing the resting metabolic rate. So let’s say you’ve lost a stone in weight, you’re careful about what you’re eating but have increased your portion sizes, unfortunately, due to a drop in your resting metabolic rate, you’re now overeating more than when you started, causing weight and fat gain and in some cases gaining more than was originally lost.

So what can you do to build and maintain a healthy metabolism? Here’s 6 moves to get you started…

Stop drastic dieting

Avoid all drastic, quick fix diets. The quicker the weight comes off the more likely you are to affect your metabolism and the quicker the weight will go back on. Minimal calorie deficits work better long term, so ensure even when you’re trying to lose weight that you eat at least 1500 calories a day.

Fuel your lifestyle

We could all do with being a little more active and eating a little less, however, you must ensure that you are fuelling your activity and lifestyle adequately, and that your overall energy balance deficit is not too large to trigger a decrease in your resting and active metabolic rate.

Make healthy choices

You can actually lose weight and change how you look by eating healthier foods, without dropping calories or your metabolic rate. So swap high sugary foods and junk food for foods high in nutrients. Aim to get a good intake

of protein, good fats and a variety of vegetables.

Drink more water

Drinking 1.5 litres of water or more a day has been shown to boost your metabolic rate. Water is also needed for most, if not all of our bodily functions, so by ensuring that we get enough water our bodies become more efficient, we feel better, and we tend to feel less bloated too.

Build muscle mass

We use our muscles all day long for movement, whereas fat stores in our cells. Resting muscle fibre use as much as 5 times more calories a day than fat, so the leaner our muscle tissue the more calories we burn, and the higher our resting metabolic rate. To increase muscle mass strength/resistance training is needed.

Be more consistent

You are better doing a 20 minute walk every day and only drinking alcohol on a Saturday, and sticking with it; rather than spending 2 weeks going all out at the gym every day and going cold turkey, only to go back to your old ways.

So start small and when these subtle changes become habits, make a few more healthier changes that you can stick to.

BLUEBERRY VICTORIA SPONGE Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes Serves: 10

Divide the mixture equally between the tins, and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and just firm. Leave to cool in the tins for a few minutes, then turn out and allow to cool completely.

HURRY Curry favour with these simple school night suppers. Packed with flavour and ready in less time than it takes to order takeout, they’re hot, hot, hot!

Salmon & Prawn Keralan Curry Serves: 4

Chicken Korma Serves: 2-3 Ingredients: 1 tsp sunflower oil 300g pack The Spice Tailor Delicate Korma Curry Kit 250g chicken breasts, cut into large chunks 50g dried apricots, halved 25g cashew nuts, toasted and roughly chopped Handful of fresh coriander leaves, roughly chopped Basmati rice, to serve

Method: Heat the oil in a non-stick pan and add the whole spices and chilli from the curry kit. Cook for 20 seconds. Add the chicken and fry for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned all over.

Add the curry base sauce and cook for 1 minute over a high heat. Stir in the main sauce, apricots and a splash of water and simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the chicken is thoroughly cooked through with no pink meat.

Scatter over the cashew nuts and coriander, and serve with basmati rice.

Ingredients: Sunflower oil spray 225g pack The Spice Tailor Keralan Coconut Curry Kit 2 x 130g salmon fillets, skinned and cut into large chunks 200g trimmed fine green beans, halved 150g cherry tomatoes, halved 150g pack raw King Prawns Juice of 1 lime ½ x 28g pack fresh coriander, roughly chopped Basmati rice, to serve Method: Spritz a large frying pan with oil and cook the dry spices from the curry kit for 30 seconds. Add the salmon and cook for 3–4 minutes until browned.

Stir in the contents of the curry sauce sachet with 100ml water, the beans and tomatoes. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes until the beans are tender and the salmon is cooked through.

Stir in the prawns and cook for 1-2 minutes until they are pink and completely cooked through. Add the lime juice and coriander and serve with the basmati rice.

Running away with it Do you produce ‘Bake Off’ standard cakes for the school fete, train months in advance to prepare for sports day and spend weeks creating the perfect chicken costume for the school play? Then read on. This month Sarah Mettrick explores the psyche of the ‘competitive parent’!

My buttocks are clenched. I’m standing rigid, eyes fixed. Slow-motion kicks in as the ball get closer to her. Every cell in my body is willing her arm to position that bat - to hit the bloody ball. My daughter lethargically imitates swatting a fly as the ball falls to the ground and she’s out before reaching first base.

Real time returns; I swiftly lower my head, start a bogus text and sense the dissatisfaction of other parents through their gritted smiles of pity. Well pity me not; my kid may lack basic sporting skills admittedly but she’s mine and she’s totally fabulous!

But heh why shouldn't parents be competitive; it teaches a child to strive and do their best doesn't it? However, is doing their best enough for some parents or does the child need to be THE BEST? Of course I would love my spawn to be brilliant, who wouldn’t - Sorry to brag but my youngest is fantastic at rolling her tummy whilst laughing uncontrollably - but I can truthfully say

Take mini beauty pageants; why do mothers push their children to such extremes all in the name of morphing cute innocent tots into hip-swinging, make-up laden, spray tanned, eyelash fluttering munchkins? Some are fed endless sugary treats and even given red bull to keep them hyper whilst others are denied naps fearing they may ruffle a ringlet. Don’t they know how easy it

is to flatten down bed-hair with licked fingers?! Whilst I’m sure most are loving and besotted parents, how much good is it doing the child and how do they cope with such expectations put upon them?

What does fascinate me is when competitive parents pretend to be blasé and casual. However there are times when concealment is just not possible.

Sports day will often highlight a CP especially when they launch into a deep lunge at the starting line of the parents race. Cover is also blown when bringing in a year one art project worthy of The Turner Prize. Not forgetting that bottle of Dom Perignon for the teacher’s Christmas gift. Yes they’re among us sneaking peeks in book bags, burning the midnight oil with Biff, Chip and Kipper and perfecting Easter Bonnets.

Truth be known I’m probably a teensy bit jealous of their patience and dedication; so lunge with pride CP’s. As for me, am I guilty of wanting my kids to be the best at something? Well actually yes I am; I desperately want them to be the best at being happy. I’m off now to watch another match. Do I want her to score?

SING WHEN YOU’RE WINNING Oscar-winning superstar Reese Witherspoon reveals her joy at playing a singing pig, and explains why sisters are finally doing it for themselves.

“I want to be able to express myself – to create shows like this to show how important women are in our world,” declares a radiant Reese Witherspoon about her latest project – Big Little Lies – a new seven-part HBO series based on the eponymous best-seller by Australian novelist Liane Moriarty.

Set in an affluent seaside town along the coast of California, the dramedy lifts the veil on the seemingly perfect lives of a group of mothers – revealing love trysts, lies and maybe even murder. “I feel like it was such a unique opportunity to have women at every age and of every colour talking about motherhood. That is the common denominator. Motherhood is the great equaliser – parenthood is a great equaliser!” she says.

As the mother of Ava, 17, and Deacon, 13, – from her first marriage to Ryan Philippe – plus Tennessee, 4, with husband Jim Toth, the 40-year-old is keen to promote an authentic and sincere portrait of women with children.

“What was great about reading the novel for the first time is that I saw myself in different stages of motherhood all through my life,” chirps Witherspoon.

“I was a mum at 22, I’ve been divorced, I’ve been re-married... they showed every spectrum and colour of a woman’s life. I thought it was incredible to have so many parts for women in one piece of material.”

So how does an A-list superstar go about casting a gang of gorgeous, glamorous women? By calling on her equally fabulous Hollywood pals, of course. Initially approaching Nicole Kidman to co-produce, it was decided at the request of writer Moriarty that Kidman and Witherspoon would both produce and star in the show, playing Celeste and Madeline respectively, along with Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoë Kravitz.

“I’ve had so many conversations over the years with very talented actress friends, and I constantly see women of incredible talent playing wives and girlfriends in thankless parts. I’d just had enough... you can’t imagine the level of exasperation that comes with having to compete for terrible parts in terrible movies,” she says, throwing her hands up. “For 25 years, I’ve been the only woman on set.

They call it the Smurfette Syndrome: there’s 100 male Smurfs around and only one woman. But together with Nicole and Laura, we nurtured each other’s performances. It’s really a collective performance for all of us.”

It also showcases some terrific vocal talent from the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Hudson and of course, Miss Legally Blonde herself, who was tasked with belting out Katy Perry’s Firework.

“I already knew Firework was difficult. I think anyone who’s not Katy Perry and has attempted to sing it knows it’s an uphill challenge,” smiles Witherspoon,

before joking, “I think my kids are a little sick of it now because I was constantly going around the house singing it. ‘Mom, give it a rest,’ is what I used to hear. A lot!”

Having won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role as country singer June Carter in Walk the Line you might be forgiven for thinking Witherspoon is being a little hard on herself, “No, I’m not a singer, I can sing OK. I can hold a tune, sometimes…Nothing will tell you that more than being around Jennifer Hudson and Tori Kelly. And Scarlett Johansson, she’s an amazing singer too.

All of them would literally be in and out of the studio in twenty minutes and then when it came to my turn, I’d sing Firework and think, ‘nailed it.’ And then they’d say to me, ‘Can you come back tomorrow to do that again?’ Then they’d say it the next day and the next day. It would stretch to, ‘Actually, are you free all next week. Yea, that’d be great. We need to do a lot of work.’”

While she doesn’t relate as a singer, the theme of Sing clearly strikes a chord with the actress, “I play a mom who I think a lot of moms can relate to. She has twenty-five kids [laughs] which is a pretty average number, right? And she’s allowed her dreams to slip by the wayside because that’s what happens…I think everybody has secret dreams and wants,” she says. “That never goes away.

And I think moms disappear sometimes when they’re looking after the kids.

They’re kind of eclipsed, and their ambitions and own lives take second place.”

So what message does Witherspoon hope kids will take away from Sing?

“That moms aren’t just moms, they are actual people…individuals, who don’t just cook dinner and clean your clothes and drive you to school. I like moms being championed. They don’t get enough credit!”

Mindful Gardening

Gardening continues to be one of Britain’s favourite hobbies, extending its diverse, and increasingly younger audience all the time. It’s no surprise that this is the case, particularly given the proven benefits of gardening upon our mental and physical health, as well as its centrality to our understanding of and connection to, the natural world.

Over the last few years, a number of leading mental health charities including Mind and Thrive have launched their own gardening schemes as a form of therapy for their clients. One of the many ways to access the health benefits of gardening is to begin growing your own produce. We expect the ‘grow your own’ trend, an existing area of growth,

to be buoyed further by the wellbeing movement in 2017.

Eco-Conscious Gardening

Over the last few years awareness has risen amongst British gardeners about the toxicity and environmental impacts of using certain products in the garden. We therefore expect to see sales of organic and natural growing media rise in the coming year. This year look out for pre-planted pots.

They come in multiple varieties and provide instant colour and brightness to the garden all year round. They work well for those who want to create an impactful outdoor space but perhaps have little room or a paved space, as they don’t require any soil to grow and need very little space. The pots come in a range of shapes and sizes, meaning they can also be used in a space as small as a balcony. They also provide a great alternative to cut-flowers in the home, as they are more sustainable and much longer lasting.

I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking about holidays already. At this time of year it’s the one thing I have to look forward to. When I was a student, choosing a holiday was easy as long as it was cheap. If I could spend the day on a sun lounger with a book and a cocktail, I was happy. The idea of a city break just seemed like far too much effort.

Since then, I’ve been converted. I’ve taken long haul trips that combined cities with beaches and watched rugby

in Rome. I’ve come to love city breaks as they show me a different side of life and allow me to recharge my batteries in a completely different way. Here’s what I’ve learnt about the best ways to explore…

Take a tour

I know, the idea of an open top bus tour probably seems horribly cheesy. I used to think so too until I took one on my last morning in Dublin before I went to catch my plane. I saw places that I would have loved to explore but didn’t have enough time. Now I take a tour whenever I go somewhere new. It helps me get my bearings and spot interesting places I hadn’t heard about before. Best of all, it’s not always a bus. The Paris ‘Batobus’ cruises along the Seine and the Circle Line Cruises in New York take you all the way around Manhattan without you having to walk a step.

Let’s face it, you wouldn’t choose to visit a city

if there wasn’t something there you definitely wanted to see or do. When you plan ahead you find out that you need to get to the Louvre early to avoid queues and that there are con artists in Bangkok who’ll tell you the Grand Palace is always closed. There’s a big difference between that and having every moment of your itinerary planned before you go. Plan for the essentials (and book if you need to) but then spend some time following your nose. You might discover something new and wonderful that isn’t in any of the guide books.

Eat the food

I know that a lot of people get nervous about trying new foods when they’re abroad. You might even think that there isn’t much you couldn’t taste in a restaurant at home. The truth is, the version you get at home has been adapted for your taste buds. Try a dish where it was first invented and you experience how it was meant to taste.

Also, eating with the locals gives you a snapshot of their everyday lives.

“Take opportunities and make your own luck by getting out there and trying new things” says fundraiser and motivational speaker Claire Lomas MBE. I was born near Melton Mowbray, and grew up on a farm. From an early age my first love was riding - and as I got older eventing - so I spent most of my time outside with the ponies.

I attended Stamford High School and after completing my A’ levels, undertook a degree in Chiropractic. Having qualified in 2004 I set up a clinic at home on the farm, and worked part-time, which allowed me to continue my passion for eventing. It was my childhood dream to compete at the Burghley Horse Trials, and in 2006 I achieved my dream.

A year later however when competing at Osberton Horse Trials with Roland, a horse I had ridden for 5 years, I had a freak accident on the cross-country course. The woodland track split into 2 and a misunderstanding on direction caused Roland to clip the tree with his shoulder. I was flung into the tree and as I hit the ground I instinctively knew I was paralysed. Just a spilt second, shattering all my dreams. It was devastating.

I was paralysed from the chest down, which meant not only couldn’t I walk, but I’d lost all sensation from the chest down, losing function of my bowel and bladder too. It was a huge amount to come to terms with. The treatment I received to get me well again was excellent but I didn’t receive much by way of rehabilitation, so after 8 weeks

I discharged myself and started my own rehab programme to keep fit and healthy.

The first year or so was very tough. The turning point was when I started to think more about what I could still do, rather than what I couldn’t. 10 years later and I have a career as a motivational speaker (something I never thought I’d do but absolutely love); I fundraise to help cure paralysis; I am an author ("Finding My Feet"), a wife and mum (I have 2 daughters, Maisie 6-years and Chloe 6-weeks); I have found new sports to enjoy (skiing, hand-cycling and most recently motorcycling) and I hope to get my race licence soon. Last year I was awarded an honorary degree at Nottingham Trent University and at the beginning of this year I received the news that I was to be awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List. It felt incredible!

For anyone in a similar situation to me I’d say, never give up. Take opportunities and make your own luck by getting out there and trying new things. I realised when I was in hospital and saw other patients with no movement at all, how lucky I was to still have use of my arms.

It gave me the drive to start fundraising by undertaking a number of sporting challenges. In 2012 I walked the London Marathon in 17 days using a robotic suit, a year later I hand-cycled 400 miles

around England, and 4 years later I competed in the Great North Run; my toughest challenge yet… those hills, and I was 16 weeks pregnant!

Fundraising is hard work but so very rewarding and to date I have raised £575,000 with lots more still to come!

I’m currently organising the second Road2Recovery Half Marathon and Fun Run on 18 June at Eye Kettleby Lakes, a motorbike ride out, as well as planning a cycling event at Rutland Water which will be suitable for anyone to join in and get the benefits of exercise.
