hen asked to picture a figurehead of the British fashion design world, the vivacious fuchsia-haired Zandra Rhodes promptly comes to mind. So it’s a privilege to meet the ‘Princess of Punk’ in her bright, quirky and altogether penthouse. Awarded London fabulous a Commander of the British Empire for her efforts in the fashion industry, the designer has permanently printed of her mark on the international world textiles.

At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field.

Unperturbed, the designer made dresses from her own fabrics, embedding printed textiles within her craft.

“One of my first struggles was the fact that I was a textile designer,” she explains if with a laugh. “People would say that you’re a textile designer then you can’t a make dresses. So I suppose that was revolution.”

Spring in your step

Winter weather causes many of us to take a workout break and pile on a few pounds; but with the official start of spring just around the corner, there’s nothing stopping you from getting back into the swing of things, says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts.

Finding a suitable fitness routine can be difficult without the right mind-set and tools for success. So this month follow my simple guidelines on ways to increase your activity levels and start to see the difference.

Planning Be realistic about what activity you can fit into your day but also don’t use your ‘busy life’ as an excuse. If you’re constantly on the go between 5am and 10pm each day, then you’re probably

going to struggle to fit in 5 gym sessions.

However, if you up at 8am, sit at a desk all day and then watch TV from 7pm, then you probably have time to fit in 30 minutes of activity a day.

Checklist A checklist is a useful planning tool to help you keep on track. Tick off your activities as you go and you can visibly see what you’ve achieved. Here’s an activity checklist I’ve created to get you started. More advanced exercisers may want to up the intensity, time or amount.

Acitivty Checklist 10,000 steps a day Most office workers struggle to do 6,000-7,000 steps a day, so start your new regime by getting out for a 15 minute walk in your lunch break.

Go with a colleague and catch up on the office gossip or if you have time, go home and take the dog for his daily constitutional. A Fitbit or simple speedometer will help you keep track of your steps.

2-3 x 10 min HIIT training a day High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is an effective, time saving way to get fit, improve heart and lung health and lose fat. It involves a short period of higher intensity exercise followed by a short rest period to recover before repeating the cycle. It can be done virtually anywhere, with or without equipment. Check out my “HIIT the stairs” programme to get you started.

2 x resistance workouts a week This is probably the hardest to incorporate for some people as it requires knowledge and sometimes equipment. Resistance training (exercise with resistance or weight) is one of the best ways to change the way you look; burning fat, toning and changing your body composition to create lasting results. If you’re new to it, try a class or get a workout video using body weight.

Weekend activity This is probably the easiest to integrate into your weekly routine.

Everyone has a couple of hours at the weekend to do an activity with the family – swimming, tennis, biking - or even take a long country walk while catching-up with a loved one or friends. Try to see it as a fun, social event, rather than exercise you feel compelled to do.

It’s not just the kids that need tech limits.

Take a mini-break

A holiday would be fabulous but not practical when work deadlines are looming. Instead learn how to hit the pause button in your day. Breathing exercises or a cup of herbal tea at your desk; whatever it takes to signal to your brain that it’s time to take a short breather.

Let happiness in

If you start your day in a mad blur, the rest of the day will follow suit. Try setting your alarm half an hour earlier and use the time for an extended shower, leisurely breakfast or yoga exercises. You’ll feel more in control and in a better place to tackle the day ahead.

Follow by example Avoid time stealers

Whether it’s answering unimportant emails, procrastinating or giving time to people that give nothing back – you know who they are - these are things we do that mean we’re unable to do something else more critical, enjoyable

If everyone else is super busy it doesn’t take long for us to let our lives fill up too.

Instead buck the trend and seek out that colleague who has a life outside work (you know, the one that leaves on time), or the friend that shuns Facebook, and follow the beat of their drum. You’ll find it rubs off!

CHICKEN NASI GORENG Quick and spicy Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1–2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 free range eggs, beaten 1 red pepper, deseeded & thinly sliced 200g pack baby leaf greens, shredded 2 red chillies, deseeded & thinly sliced

1 bunch salad onions, sliced 2 x 250g packs Tilda Steamed Basmati Rice 200g Waitrose British Roast Chicken Sweet Chilli Mini Fillets, thinly sliced 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp Lingham’s Ginger Garlic Chilli Sauce 6cm piece cucumber, halved, seeded & sliced 60g pack Waitrose Indonesian Style Vegetable Crackers, to serve

eat a splash of the oil in a large non–stick frying pan H or wok and once hot, pour in the beaten eggs and cook for a couple of minutes on each side to make a large, thin omelette. Slide onto a large plate, roll up and cut into thin ribbons.

dd the rest of the oil to the pan and cook the pepper A for 2 minutes. Add the greens and cook for a further 3 minutes on the highest heat so any water released by the greens evaporates.

tir in half the chillies, the salad onions, rice and S chicken and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes until piping hot.

tir in the soy sauce and chilli sauce and divide between S bowls. Arrange the cucumber, omelette ribbons and remaining chilli on top and serve with the crackers.

STICKY LEMON CHICKEN Light and refreshing Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 4 essential Waitrose British Chicken Thighs Juice and grated zest of 1 lemon, plus wedges to serve 2 tbsp clear honey 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 cucumber portion, halved, seeded and sliced 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 4 Waitrose Cornichons, thinly sliced ½ x 28g pack coriander, roughly chopped

reheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Place P the chicken in a small baking dish. Mix together the lemon zest and juice, honey and garlic, then pour over the chicken.

CHICKEN TARRAGON A timeless combination Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 tsp olive oil 4 Waitrose British Chicken Legs, skin removed 400g pack shallots, peeled 4 garlic cloves, halved 300ml dry white wine 300ml chicken stock 2 tsp wholegrain mustard 2 tbsp chopped tarragon plus a few leaves to garnish 2 tbsp essential Waitrose Half Fat British Crème Fraiche 200g long grain rice 200g sugar snap peas

eat the oil in a large sautĂŠ H pan and cook the chicken, shallots and garlic over a fairly high heat for 10 minutes until golden brown.

Meanwhile cook the rice and sugar snap peas as per instructions.

Watermelon Gazpacho

Chilled Cucumber & Avocado

Ingredients: 800g watermelon, deseeded and chopped

Ingredients: 160ml water

140g tomatoes, diced 60g cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced

200g cucumber, peeled and seeded

30g red pepper, diced

1 avocado, peeled and chopped

1 tbsp red onion, diced

1 handful rocket

1½ tbsp basil, finely chopped

1 handful coriander leaves, chopped

1 ½ tbsp mint, finely chopped

1 tbsp lime juice

1 tbsp lime juice

1 tbsp olive oil

½ tsp lime zest, grated

½ tbsp spring onion, finely chopped

1 tsp ginger, finely grated

1 clove garlic, finely chopped

¼ tsp green chilli, finely chopped

¼ tsp chilli

Pinch of salt and pepper

Method Add all ingredients to the soup maker, and blend on the smooth setting. Chill for 2½ hours. Serve in a glass or bowl with a garnish of cucumber and a sprinkle of coriander leaves.

Method Add half of the watermelon to the soup maker and blend, ensuring texture to your personal taste. Remove from the soup maker and add the rest of the ingredients. Serve in individual bowls.

5ml olive oil

Having appeared on screen since the tender age of nine, Brie Larson is finally ready to become a household name with a potentially Oscar-winning performance in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harrowing and heart-rending outsider, Room.

Amidst the crowds, costumes and controversy of the Oscars, a careerdefining performance is in danger of being overshadowed. However, flying under the radar has always been something of a habit for Brie Larson, star of this year’s underdog nomination, Room.

Despite appearing in films and television series since 2001, Larson hasn’t managed to break into mainstream consciousness, seemingly content to take leads in smallbudget indie movies like Short Term 12, or smaller parts in bigger pictures including her turn as Amy Schumer’s sister in 2015’s Trainwreck. But with a Golden Globe and BAFTA already under her belt, all that is likely to change if Larson manages to grab the coveted ‘Best Actress’ Oscar.

Room, based on the 2010 bestselling book by Emma Donaghue, follows the life of Ma (Larson), abducted as a teenager and forced to live in a locked shed with her son Jack, born as a consequence of her tormentor’s abuse. For Jack, the four corners of the ‘Room’ represent his entire world – a feat made possible by the creative nurturing of Ma. Larson confesses to have grown up being “the girl who loved movies and wanted to think outside of cultural norms”, so she jumped at the chance to play Ma. “You can’t just Google the types of things Ma goes through in this movie,” Larson explains. “I spent a lot of time with trauma councillors; they explained what exactly happens in the mind of someone who goes through an event like this.

Trapped in a room, dealing with sexual abuse for all that time, going through pregnancy alone, giving birth alone, how that would affect the mind, the body, the soul. The mentality that builds when people have been socially and geographically deprived.”

In preparation for the film, Larson even put herself through some of the physical hardships her character would endure. “I talked to doctors about the depletion of sunlight, what that would do, not getting enough Vitamin D or the right nutrition.

I followed a very specific diet. I stayed at home for a month…after a while, the still and the quiet, started to get to me. I felt so depressed. I couldn’t stop crying.”

Larson describes the current Oscars buzz surrounding her as “very flattering and lovely but not something I work towards.”

For her, a positive reaction to her work is almost more important than awards

I couldn’t stop crying.” themselves. “If the Oscar happens, it will be fantastic and I’ll be so happy because I’ll know everyone else came with me on that journey.”

Her role in Room, is a far cry from her original career path. Having got her SAG card aged six, Larson was destined for a career as a Disney sweetheart with roles in Right on Track and The Sleepover.

She even released a teen-pop album which sold 3,500 copies in the US. So it’s perhaps fitting that Larson’s co-star

in Room, nine year old Jacob Tremblay, is the same age as Larson when she made her first television appearance. The actress was a little nervous about how to forge a bond with her young co-star.

“Children can read you immediately.

There’s no hiding. Their reaction is so instinctual and it’s so simple, he was going to pick up on my energy and that was a concern for me,” she explains, “you know, it’s not like someone my age where I can say, ‘Let’s toss round a few anecdotes and grab a drink and get to know each other.’

So we just played. We got creative, we built; we played with Lego which I love.

We became such partners and best friends. Our relationship was purely loving and I adored spending every minute with him…I was very protective on set and always mindful of what he was doing, checking he was alright. In the movie, Ma is doing everything for Jack, her whole world revolves around making life what it is, and better for him, so just like that, my performance is second to Jacob.”

Larson’s victory over the curse that has followed many of Hollywood’s teen stars, it seems, lies in her patience. Despite her breath-taking performance in Room, the ensuing Oscar talk and her subsequent starring role in 2017’s big budget Kong: Skull Island, Larson remains unfazed by celebrity. Her attitude reflects a quiet maturity well beyond her years. “I sometimes wonder why I’m doing this job when the end objective tends to be your name above the titles, your face in lights. I can’t fathom anyone ever being like, ‘I love Brie Larson. I have to see her next movie.’ That would be so wrong and weird and odd…I’ve always liked telling stories,” she explains, “and that’s all I want to do… everything else means very little to me.”

authentic there wouldn’t be a great deal of furniture in this design scheme. So keep large pieces to a minimum and where possible use honest raw materials, such as linen, leather and weathered wood. A safari inspired sling chair, banquette footstool or slouchy sofa work perfectly in this relaxed setting.

Accessories: think cultural motifs, dream

catchers, hunting arrows, African masks and models. Beautiful embellishments of tiny beads, inspired by the ceremonial jewellery of the Maasai, are set to be big this year. Look out for strings of glass beads tightly wound around bottle necks, woven around vases or used to create colourful edging for textiles.

Or maybe it’s simply time to help your offspring get onto the property ladder so you can convert her bedroom into a space for your own Handmade Home projects.

Whatever you’re planning, if you need finance, you probably think first about asking your own bank or building society. But what if your bank says no?

Kayley Brant of Furnley House has some reassuring advice.

After the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the US coincided with the global financial crisis, banks and building societies have become much more cautious with their lending. So if you’ve found your dream home and have done your own calculations based on multiples of your income, you might be surprised to discover that you’re turned down for a mortgage on the grounds of affordability, based on your discretionary or disposable income.

High street banks and building societies can only offer a limited range of

mortgages. These will either be their own products or those of another institution which may be part of their group or a commercial agreement.

This limits the options they are able to explore for you and while they can advise you on the best of their own products to suit your circumstances, that might not be the best fit for you. They might not have a product to suit your circumstances at all. Especially if your circumstances are a little unusual.

You could go online and search for other options, but it’s not always easy to find a suitable mortgage with a lender you can trust. That’s why it might be a good idea to see a fully independent financial adviser. They will be able to search the whole of the market to access products you might not be able to find on the high street.

They can advise on different solutions to financing property purchases and makeovers, specifically tailored to your circumstances. They’ll also help ensure that you lend from a trustworthy source and put appropriate protection and

insurances in place. Here are just two examples of how they can help: Couple A had saved a 5% deposit to help their daughter buy her first home. Despite this, her mortgage application was rejected on the grounds of affordability. An independent financial adviser helped access 20% more deposit through the Help To Buy scheme. Then, with a better loan to value ratio, secured a better mortgage rate, reducing her monthly repayments and helping build equity more rapidly.

Couple B had managed to pay off their mortgage and were about to put down a 10% deposit and secure a mortgage on a second home. Their advisor recommended that they lend against their main home instead. This gave them access to better mortgage rates and reduced legal fees. They saved £10,000 over five years.

So if you’ve got grand designs this spring but your bank manager comes over all Dragons Den, take a different route to market.

Want Like most women – we apparently make 80% of car purchasing decisions – I considerably influenced the purchase of our last family car and believe it or not I wasn’t lured to the dealership with offers of a free manicure, mochaccino or Barbie pink paint job.

So what did effect my decision? What is the holy grail of car marketing, otherwise known as ‘What Women Want’? It’s really rather straightforward:

Practicality

As far as the attributes of a car are concerned, women are said to favour active safety features, sensibly wanting to be kept safe in the event of an accident.

Women want power too, but for practical reasons like entering the motorway and overtaking, rather than just for bragging rights.

Reliability

Women want their cars to last; they want reliability, and they care about warranty coverage for when something does go wrong. After all, none of us want to feel vulnerable breaking down on the dual carriageway in rush hour, or worse, down a country lane after dark.

Trust

Women don’t want to be rushed through the car buying process. Unlike men - who

tend to get caught up in the thrill of it all - we are typically more considered in our approach. Women want a connection with someone who has patience, listens and we can trust not to up-sell us useless features that only benefit their commission.

When it comes to choosing a make and model, research shows that women’s desires split broadly into three categories:

Small Cars

Some women want a sassy city runaround that reflects a certain, carefree joie de vivre; a car that says I’m fun, I’m spirited, I’m off to Milan with a girlfriend.

Convertibles

Others want to feel the wind in their hair. After all what’s the point of life if you can’t tie a scarf around your head and don some enormous Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses a la Audrey

Lastly, there’s the group of women largely mums, and of which I’m one - who want 100% protection from their cars. An SUV gives the driver a superior view of the road, a sense of impregnability and the belief that, because of their size and weight, they are unbreakable (although leave your child’s iPad accidentally on the back seat for an opportune thief to catch sight of …I can assure you they are). For these women the BMW X5, Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC90 all pack a punch.

So it seems it’s not candy coloured finishes and fancy coffee that influence our decisions but rather that our needs (whatever they might be) as a female car-buyer are being met. And maybe that is all that women actually want.

Mandy Dodd “Take each day one step at a time”

I was born and raised in Leicester, attending school at Beaumont Leys. I went on to study childcare at college but having completed my course, positions were thin on the ground. I’d taken a weekend job in Wilkinsons while studying, so when they offered me a full time role I jumped at the chance. It must have been fate because it was there that I met my partner, Chris. We’ve been together eight years now.

In September 2011 our beautiful daughter Mia was born. Life was good. But when she was 18 months old Mia developed a cough which didn’t go away and soon after she suffered with nose bleeds, fatigue and unexplained bruising. After a few trips back and forth to the GP - who basically called me a paranoid mother - we were finally sent to LRI for blood tests.

Results showed that Mia had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), a cancer of the blood that affects your white blood cells. There are simply no words to describe the feeling of being told your child has cancer.

Within a relatively short period of time Mia developed skin conditions, vomited, lost her hair, stopped communicating and lost the ability to walk and eat. Her treatment plan involved chemotherapy drugs, steroids, morphine, antibiotics and other medicines, along with numerous blood and platelet transfusions, lumber punctures and bone marrow testing. As for me, life changed drastically. I operated on very little sleep, constantly worrying, cleaning up vomit, bribing Mia to take awful tasting oral chemo, comforting her through the pain and doing my utmost to bring her even the slightest slice of happiness.

In 2014 the doctors gave us the OK to take Mia away for a few days so we joined our family at Butlins. For the first time

She enjoyed every second and it reminded us what life was like before ALL. It was here that I first had the idea to raise money for a holiday home for families of children with cancer, to enjoy some respite away from hospital life. On our return, I shared the idea with my friends and family and the Mia Moo Crew was created. Our fundraising target for the holiday home at Butlins is £40,000 and in the last 18 months we have raised £10,000, with more events planned for 2016.

After a long 2½ years, Mia had her last chemotherapy and went into remission at Christmas 2015. She is currently cancer free and aside from her monthly check-ups, is experiencing normal life, and is excited about Can yo starting school in September.

As for me, after an extended career break to look after Mia, I’ll be going back to work next week. I’m feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement but everyone is lovely and so welcoming and it’ll be great to catch up with all the gossip.
