HAIR
HACKS From super-easy styling tricks to game-changing cuts, we reveal how to get the thick, luscious mane you always wanted. Hair flicking optional.
BODY BUILD
Start with the basics and pump up the volume with a thickening shampoo and conditioner. The key is to keep the formula light. We love the Kérastase Densifique range. Over time the hair feels texturised, more resilient and thicker.
HANDLE WITH CARE
Don’t subject your hair to more wear and tear than necessary. Your hairbrush can do more harm than good. Ripping through wet tangles creates split ends, so try gently running a wide-tooth plastic comb from roots to ends.
HOT STUFF
Applying hot tools directly to your hair can fry the cuticle. If possible let it airdry roughly 80%, then use a round brush to lift the roots and smooth the ends. If must use straighteners choose ceramic ones with uniformly heated plates, so you don't have to go over the same section more than once.
FLIPPING OUT
Don’t part your hair where you normally do, as it will end up flat along the parting. Instead, part your hair on the opposite side and when you’ve finished blow-drying, flip it back for gorgeous volume.
PUMP IT UP
Described as ‘botox’ for the hair, Kérastase Matérialiste is an allover thickening spray gel offering instantly visible results. Hair is weightlessly texturized, making it easier for those with fine hair to create styles never thought possible before.
ROCK ‘N’ ROLL
Do a little strategic teasing. Don’t panic teasing hair doesn’t have to transform you into a 70’s glam rocker. Use tried-and-tested rollers or alternatively a new toothbrush to gently tease the roots and give the appearance of more volume.
CUTTING EDGE
Ask your stylist to cut the underlayer of your hair half an inch shorter than the top layer. This will add fullness. Avoid razor cuts as that can create frayed ends that make your hair look wispier. To give weight to fine hair, keep ends blunt.
FAKING IT
If your hair is full at the crown, but fine from the mid-length to ends, clip-in hair extensions can give you
a sumptuous style in minutes. Good quality synthetic versions can look completely natural without breaking the budget. For in-salon alternatives speak to your stylist.
COLOUR FIX
Create natural-born thickness with streamline highlights. Bleach causes individual strands to expand, so they feel and look thicker. The combination of light and dark pieces also creates more depth for a full-body look. Ask your colourist about the most flattering highlights for your skin tone.
INTENSIVE PAMPERING
You put your hair through a lot, so treat it to the equivalent of a deluxe spa treatment. Use a masque formulated for fine hair. We love Olaplex, a 3-step programme which works to repair bonds within the hair shaft, improving the condition and texture of the hair. Share your hair thickening tips and tricks with us on Facebook and #jointheconversation URBAN FOX MAY 2018 17

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Boost SPRING
Hibernating over winter, can leave you feeling sluggish and in need of a pick me up. Rebecca Watts from TheStudios40 reveals how to power-up your energy reserves and get that spring back in your step.
PROTEIN
Here’s how to get started…
IRON
CALORIES
Your body energy supplies are like a fire, and you need to get enough fuel (calories) to keep the fire burning. If you skip meals or eat too little, your fire may go out or burn much lower, effecting your energy levels. It’s important to eat regularly to keep your energy fire burning bright. The type of fuel also makes a difference to your energy levels. We’re told that carbohydrates are our main energy supply but carbohydrates are like a fire starter, lighting and burning quickly to get the fire going. If you consume too much processed foods and refined carbohydrates it’s like running a fire only on fire starters. Quick rushes of energy, followed by dips. To keep the fire burning steadily fats, proteins and fibre are also required, acting like slower burning logs.
Protein is needed by the body for growth, and to recover and repair cells. Without adequate protein in the diet the body begins to break down protein rich tissues such as muscles. This can lead to a sluggish metabolism, fatigue, low energy and focus. Ensure that you get adequate protein (meat, fish, dairy products, nuts, seeds) in your diet to keep your energy levels powered up.
B VITAMINS
Many of the B group of vitamins are directly involved with energy production and transportation. So if you want to feel full of energy, B vitamins are crucial. Increase your intake by eating green vegetables, eggs and brown rice.
WATER
Water is vital for every process in our body, including the transportation of the vitamins and minerals, aiding in energy production. Dehydration can also cause fatigue and tiredness, leaving you drained with poor focus and concentration. Water is always a good starting point when you’re feeling tired. Consuming water regularly will keep your energy ticking over.
Iron is used to produce red blood cells which store and carry oxygen to the blood and to every cell in the body. This oxygen is used to help produce energy, and short supplies can lead to lack of energy. To ensure that your energy fire is kept burning, eat plenty of iron rich foods. Iron from animal products is better absorbed by the body but can also be found in plant foods such as leafy greens.
EXERCISE
MAGNESIUM
Sleep is where the magic happens. We need 7-9 hours sleep a night for our body to properly recover. You can get all the fuel and nutrients in the world but without adequate sleep your energy levels will suffer. Avoid technology an hour before bed, control caffeine levels and try relaxation techniques. Magnesium supplements can be a great sleep aid, helping you relax and get a good night’s sleep.
Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including energy production, regulating blood sugars and maintaining nerve and muscle function. It’s a common deficiency in the UK which can lead to tiredness, muscle cramps, difficulty sleeping and anxiety. Eat plenty of leafy greens and nuts to keep your magnesium levels up.
Exercise has been proven to increase energy levels by increasing endorphins, encouraging better sleep and managing stress, as well as improving the flow of oxygen to your cells. Exercise may be the last thing you want to do when tired but participating in regular exercise may just give you the energy reserves you may currently be lacking.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
SNOOZE DOs (and don'ts) Power naps have long been considered an ideal way to restore alertness, enhance performance, and reduce mistakes and accidents. Feeling sleepy? Check out our roundup of nano snooze dos and don’ts.
DO...
Ensure you have a restful and comfortable place to lie down. Some companies now provide sleep or energy pods specifically designed for their employees to nap while at work. Choose a dark room. By blocking out the light, you will fall asleep faster. If you cannot get to a dark room, wear a sleep mask or even a pair of sunglasses to provide some semblance of darkness. Make sure that the temperature in the room is not too warm or too cold. If the room is cold, have a warm blanket to hand or a cosy jumper you can put on. Try counting if you’re having trouble falling asleep. Close your eyes, count down slowly from 100. If you lose track, simply start again at 100. This will help distract you from what’s keeping you awake.
Use a napping app that will guide you through relaxation techniques for napping. Remember to put your phone on airplane mode to prevent phone calls or message alerts from disrupting you. Listen to soothing music. Relaxing music can put you in the right state of mind to drop off. If you find music distracting, and you can’t help singing along, you can also try white noise. Take a “caffeine nap”. Caffeine consumed right before a 20 minute nap may improve performance and make you feel less sleepy once you wake up. Set an alarm. Once you are close to finishing your coffee set an alarm that will wake you up. This will help you relax, as you know you won’t sleep longer than you intend.
DON'T...
Take a nap too late in the day, as it might affect your night time sleep patterns and make it difficult for you to fall asleep at your regular bedtime. Try to nap too early in the day, as your body may not be ready for more sleep. The best time to take a nap is in the mid afternoon when your natural 'slump' tends to occur. Sleep for longer than 20 mins. Napping longer may result in sleep inertia, a feeling of grogginess and disorientation that can come with awakening from a deep sleep. Have a “caffeine nap” too late in the afternoon, as it might make it more difficult for you to fall asleep at bedtime. Forget to turn off your phone and other potential distractions. If background noise is unavoidable, wearing ear plugs or putting on headphones may help. Be tempted to hit snooze, as this can throw off your sleep routine. Get up immediately, wash your face and/or expose yourself to bright daylight. This will help you feel more awake. Worry if you can’t get to sleep, keep your eyes closed and meditate. Although you may not fall asleep, you can still help your brain recharge a bit. Let your nap disrupt your night time sleep. If you need a regular power nap in the day, it’s a good sign that you need more sleep during the night. Speak to your GP if you have ongoing concerns.

BAKED EGGS Serves: 2 Ingredients: 250g pack spinach 25g butter 1 tbsp plain flour 150ml semi-skimmed milk ¼ tsp grated nutmeg 4 medium free range eggs 2 tbsp half fat crème fraîche Grated cheddar, to serve Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Cook the spinach in boiling water for 1 minute, drain and refresh under cold water. Squeeze out all the water with your hands and chop finely. Heat the butter in a small pan, add the flour and cook for 1 minute. Off the heat, stir in the milk a little at a time, then bring to the boil and stir until thick and smooth. Stir the chopped spinach into the sauce and add nutmeg and seasoning. Spoon into the base of 2 large ramekins or shallow gratin dishes. Make shallow wells in the spinach, then break 2 eggs into each. Spoon over the crème fraîche and scatter with the grated Cheddar. Place in a roasting tin filled with hot water and bake in the oven for 12–15 minutes until the eggs are set.

Zone IN THE
If the thought of breaking out of your comfort zone fills you with dread, try stretching it instead. Sarah Mettrick shows us how to feel the fear and do it anyway!
My comfort zone is shrinking rapidly - I used to be able to run around, skip and long jump in it, now I’m wedged in so tight I can hardly wriggle my toes. I speak hypothetically of course, but what on earth is going on? Why is it much easier to remain within the boundaries of our comfort zones than to face the fear of venturing beyond them? Well most of us doubt our abilities in some form and fear testing them in different situations. We also have a distorted way of gauging any risks by using our level of fear as a barometer. I don't know about you but when I had kids I grew a red flashing light on my forehead and transformed into a warning beacon. Like a meerkat fully stretched, wide eyes flickering from
left to right, sensing imminent danger from every direction. Careful extra high pavement ahead, kid with germs three o’clock, odd looking man approaching northerly direction- heads down MOVE people. Somebody help me! So how much you fear something doesn’t represent the true element of risk - if you are terrified of flying you associate it with being super dangerous yet think nothing of jumping into your car which puts you in far greater danger. Rationalise properly when leaving the ‘zone’ using statistics and evidence where you can, this will lessen the fear before you even take the first step. Seeing as my teeny weeny comfort zone was causing severe cramp I had to take action! So this year I set myself targets which involved doing things that scared the pants off me. I’ve wanted a particular job for ages but it meant doing presentations, for me that was terrifying! Before I had too much time to think I applied on line and pressed the send button with a little yelp. I took advice on not overthinking (my specialist subject) and that we should ask ourselves what we want to achieve, consider what’s the worst that can happen and accept it.
By limiting ourselves to what we already know, we miss out on so much stuff; great experiences, job opportunities not to mention personal growth, so how can we man up and strut out of our comfort zones as confident as Miss Piggy. Well you can start gently! Try and get yourself into different environments, book a new restaurant, visit a different place, take a different mode of transport, speak to new people, don't always pick the easiest or most comfortable option. Keep stretching out of that zone!
By limiting ourselves to what we already know, we miss out on so much stuff The best way of course is to do what you are afraid of. There comes a time when you just have to stand up tall, trust your strengths, test your abilities and discover the power house you really are. I went off for my interview and I did the presentation. Whether I got the job or not I was delighted; I had faced a fear and created a few more feet in my comfort zone, there was plenty of space for a full celebratory dance routine!

THE
Iron Lady She may be the greatest actress of our time, but Meryl Streep’s desire to succeed is borne not solely from ambition, but also a need to live as an independent woman. The luminous star talks childhood heroines, Steven Spielberg, and reveals why she thinks women have had enough of being ‘polite and silent’.
LIFE & WORK Meryl Streep has a long and distinguished history playing remarkable women. From Out of Africa novelist Karen Blixen to celebrated chef Julia Child to Margaret Thatcher, Streep invests her own formidable self into one compelling performance after another. Recently she took on another important historical figure in Steven Spielberg’s The Post, portraying Katherine Graham, the owner/publisher of The Washington Post who in 1971 faced a difficult decision once the newspaper obtained what came to be known as "The Pentagon Papers," an Edward Snowden-like treasure trove of a classified government study relating to the Vietnam War. Not only did Streep's performance earn her an unprecedented 31st Golden Globe nod, it also led to her breaking her own Oscars record as she nabbed her 21st nomination (the gong eventually went to Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) putting her nine ahead of Jack Nicholson and Katherine Hepburn who are tied in second place with a dozen each. With Streep’s status as Hollywood’s most powerful actress well established, it is surprising that The Post marked her first time working with Spielberg. And when asked why she thinks this is the case, the revered actress is unequivocal in her response: "I've never been asked to dance with him before," she says. "This is one of the few films that he's made that's focused on a woman's journey. I wouldn't have been in Saving Private Ryan. And in lots of his films, like Lincoln and Amistad.” Such a straightforward answer is expected from a star whose off-screen presence is as fierce and formidable as her onscreen one. But while the charismatic 68-year-old has long been getting her teeth into well-developed and inspiring female characters, the same cannot be said for many of her peers. And while the tide appears to be turning as more female-centric projects are getting the green light, Streep insists that there is no room for complacency going forward. “We have to be very vigilant. Young generations of women may not be
aware of how hard it was just to get to where we are today. Many young women who have reached positions of power may not think that the fight still needs to continue,” she insists. “Those of us who are older remember how it wasn't that long ago that a lot of professions and positions of influence were closed to women. In the seventies, there were very few women doctors, lawyers, and virtually no CEOs. And even today we still have a long way to go to achieve pay equality not just in Hollywood but in all professions.”
"Young generations of women may not be aware of how hard it was just to get to where we are today." Born and raised in New Jersey, Streep’s childhood in Fifties and Sixties America was certainly a markedly different time for women, who were expected to be the homemakers while their husbands went out and worked. Though the Suffragette star credits much of her own courage and strength to the ladies who raised her. “I was very influenced and inspired by my grandmother. She was highly intelligent, she had five children who were well bred and educated, and yet she was not allowed to vote,” says a bemused Streep, before recalling the time she overheard her mother ask her father for money so could buy a pair of shoes. “I remember thinking to myself, ‘Why does my mother have to ask him for money if they're married?’ My father worked outside the house, my mother was an artist who worked at home and earned less money. But it seemed unfair that as a married woman she would have to ask for everything. So, I swore to myself that I would never be in a position of having to ask a man for money.” One might assume such unassailing independence would have prevented the three-times-Academy-Awardwinner from settling down into a traditional marriage. On the contrary, Streep and her sculptor husband Donald Gummer will celebrate 40 years of matrimony this year, and share
four children: Mamie Gummer, 34, who co-starred with her mother in Ricki and the Flash; Grace Gummer, 31, who has appeared in films including Margin Call and Frances Ha, a musician son, Henry, 38, and another daughter, Louisa, 26, who works as a model. Not one to sugar coat or romanticise, Streep’s secret to a successful partnership is joyfully pragmatic. “We have always made a good team,” she says simply. “Don was and still is very involved as a father. He was always a little more relaxed than me when it came to raising the kids. I was too protective at times and I would sometimes forget that I shouldn't treat my 14-yearold teenagers as if they were still ten. You learn that kids need to stand on their own feet. I was also more of a tiger mum.” Streep admits that she and her husband don’t always see eye to eye; like the time her son Henry was young and wanted to learn the piano, but the teacher they hired wasn’t very good, so the boy lost interest. “I thought he should continue to take lessons, but my husband thought it was my dream that I was trying to impose on him,” she says, adding triumphantly: “Today, my son is a successful musician. Tiger-mum Meryl was right!” Next up, Streep will reprise her role as another ‘tiger-mum’, Donna Sheridan, in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – the long-awaited sequel to the 2008 film adaptation of the popular Abba musical - before sharing a screen once more with Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Returns. With the ambitious follow up to the Disney classic being shrouded in secrecy, very little is known of what role Streep will actually play, though Blunt, who is playing the titular character, has hinted that they will carry in their Devil Wears Prada tradition of holding a deep dislike for one another onscreen. But though the veteran actress has often wowed playing the unlikeable battle-axe, in reality Streep is nothing but a champion of women. And when asked what she believes the long-term impact of the recent Hollywood sex scandals will be, she declares defiantly: “I think it's going to lead to significant change not just in Hollywood but in every office and corporation in America and all over the world. Women have had it with being polite and silent!”

LIFE & WORK
Staying POWER? You swore you’d love him forever, but now he makes you swear in an entirely different way! But before you start packing your bags try these simple strategies to help future-proof your relationship.
1
Think about what you value in your relationship, and then let your partner know exactly what you love about them. It’s great to feel appreciated.
2
Try a new activity together. This allows couples to spend more time together and learn more about each other. It also helps with any negative feelings of stagnation.
3
Couples who have sex at least once a week are less likely to divorce. Commit to trying something new – position, location, role play - once a month. Get it in your diary now!
4
Also increase the amount of non-sexual touch in your relationship. Just cuddling or holding hands can release ‘oxytocin’, a powerful brain chemical that improves bonding.
5
Learn to prioritise your other half. Research shows that the more one partner focuses on the wellbeing of the other, the more the other partner will do so too.
6
Still feeling angry after an argument? Write down a summary of the argument from an outsider’s viewpoint. It’ll help you to see clearer and reduce levels of emotional distress.
7
11
Having children, has a huge impact on a relationship. Nothing can truly prepare you for parenthood. Create some ‘us’ time and resolve big issues early.
If you have different ideas on how to spend the weekend – you like to plan, he’s more spontaneous – take turns to be in charge. There’s no right or wrong, just different opinions.
12
8
Most of us don’t like being told our every fault. Instead act as each other’s number 1 fan. It’s a great way to help us become the best version of ourselves we can be.
Avoid becoming white noise. For every negative comment you make, balance this with five positive ones. That way they’re more likely to hear a genuine complaint...or request.
13
9
If who does what (or not as the case may be) leaves you fuming silently, try sitting opposite each other, taking turns to speak, using “I” and not “you”. This removes the accusatory tone.
Money arguments are rarely just about cash but a reflection on how you live the rest of your life together. Take charge of your money and you’ll see the payoff in your relationship too.
14
Finally don’t be embarrassed to consult an expert. They can offer some practical advice and thought-provoking exercises that can be done either with your partner or on your own.
10
Don’t try to convert a messy partner, instead find a middle ground. Choose mess free zones to meet your needs but allow your other half a place they can dump things.

BLUE
PALETTE
Far from being conservative, this season’s blue brings innovation and imagination to home interiors. It’s got our vote!
Gather inspiration for your colour palette from around your home. Whether it’s a glass, ceramic plate or even a bowl of fruit, use these hues as the basis for selecting your fabrics, wall coverings and paints. Produce a mood board to convey the essence of your style concept.
WALLCOVERINGS
Opting for a vibrant shade of blue on your walls, can give the room more depth. But be sure to incorporate effective lighting, break up the wall colour with white detailing – fireplaces, dado rails and cornices - and add a mirror for dramatic effect.
FURNISHINGS
Picking out a sofa or statement chair is a great way to anchor a new living room scheme. Blue is classic, adaptable and bang on trend, so you really can’t go wrong. Layer your new investment with tonal cushions and the cosy throws.
BEDDING
Promote feelings of tranquillity in your home by using a combination of both soft and vibrant shades of blue in your bedroom. In terms of bedding, avoid anything too masculine. Ditch the dark denim for floral prints and classic stripes in luxe cotton.
ACCESSORIES
Accessories are the easiest and cheapest way to get an instant new look. A few cushions here, a collection of vases there, and voilà. Use a range of shades and contrasting textures to create decorative features and add interest.

Home ENERGY AT
We all know we could do more to conserve energy, but where to start? While some of the biggest energy savers require time and money, there’s still plenty you can do.
Try these 7 energy saving tips…
Utilities
Speak to your provider to ensure you’re on the cheapest available tariff - including any dual fuel savings. Look at how you pay too, as on average it’s £100 cheaper per year to pay by monthly direct debit than paying by cash or cheque. Discounts may also be available for online billing. This cuts down on paper, reducing costs for the supplier, and is good for the environment too.
Standby
You can save around £30 a year by turning your appliances off standby. Almost all electrical appliances can be turned off without affecting their programming. And a ‘standby saver’ would enable you to turn all your appliances off standby in one go. Do check the instructions on satellite and Source: energysavingtrust.org.uk
digital TV recorders, as some need to be left on standby to record.
Kitchen
You can save around £36 a year from your energy bill just by using your kitchen appliances more carefully. When washing-up opt for a bowl rather than a running tap; fill the kettle with only the water you need and do one less clothes wash per week. If replacing dishwashers or washing machines look for products with a ‘Water Efficient’ label and/or a ‘Waterwise Recommended’ checkmark as these models can help you to save water, energy and money.
Bathroom
If you’ve got a shower that takes hot water straight from your boiler or hot water tank, fit a water efficient shower head. This could save a family of four around £75 a year on gas for water heating, as well as a further £120 on water bills if they have a water meter. Spending one minute less in the shower each day will save up to £7 off your energy bills each year, per person.
Heating
Having a room thermostat, programmer and thermostatic radiator valves installed could save around £150 a year. Even turning down your thermostat by one degree can save around £75 a year.
Whatever the age of your boiler the right controls will let you set your heating and hot water to come on and off when you need them; heat only the areas that need heating and set the temperature for each area of your home independently.
Meters
Smart meters are the next generation of gas and electricity meters. Together with their accompanying in-home displays, smart meters provide you with accurate and real-time information about your energy use, enabling you to make informed decisions about your energy behaviour. All homes in the UK will be offered smart meters for electricity and gas by the end of 2020.
LEDs
If the average household replaced all of their remaining old-fashioned bulbs with regular energy saving bulbs (CFLs), and all of their halogens with LEDs, it would cost about £100 and save about £35 a year on bills. And even if you switch a light off for just a few seconds, you will save more energy than it takes for the light to start up again. This will save you around £15 on your annual energy bills. Share your energy saving tips with us on Facebook and #jointheconversation URBAN FOX MAY 2018 51

AFTER
Dark If enjoyment of your garden is limited to weekends; landscape and garden designer and Radio 4 Gardener’s Question Time panellist, Matthew Wilson, reveals how to transform your relationship with the outdoors beyond daylight hours. I spend most of my professional life considering the elements of a garden that are designed to be enjoyed in daylight; plants, hard landscaping, vistas, water features. In recent years I’ve come to appreciate more and more just how much garden lighting can add to the mix. Lighting can transform our relationship with the outdoors, allowing us to enjoy our garden far beyond daylight hours. One of the most exciting aspects of garden lighting is the dynamic effects it creates. It means that however well you know your garden during the hours of daylight, it can become something completely different and genuinely magical at night. Garden lighting can be divided into two main categories; those that make
the garden safer, such as security lights or lighting for steps, and those that are purely for aesthetic purposes. But the two categories aren’t mutually exclusive – well-lit steps can be beautiful to look at, as can the shadows cast on a wall by a thoughtfully placed lamp. It’s essential to get the balance of lighting right; the shadows and darkness are as important as the light. Too many bright lights will make the garden look like a sports-field (and seriously upset your neighbours), too few can create disconcerting pools of light and dark and increase the risk of trips and falls. Arranging lights in pairs or in symmetrical groupings can be very effective against a garden or house wall, creating even patterns of diffused light against the brick or stone. Pairing lights either side of doors or windows makes a statement, and can be used to make even the most modest entrance a little bit grander. Using lights of different sizes and outputs can help to differentiate between a front door and a secondary entrance. Garden paths are best lit using lights placed at regular spaces, so the pools of light cast by each one just overlap. Not only does this create a very attractive ambient effect it also creates a feeling of safety and certainty – a dark spot can be mistaken for a step, for example, which can make you feel seriously disconcerted.
Post lights, where the light fitting is mounted on the top of a vertical pole, are really versatile and can be used to light paths, borders and individual plants. If you want to create a diffused effect, position the post so the light is cast through the planting. The shadow effects this will create can be mesmerising at night. Lighting a single plant, such as a tree or large shrub, can transform a specimen that during the daytime is very much ‘background’ into a key feature at night. Pick a few specimens to illuminate in this way and it’s like painting with light.
Lighting can transform our relationship with the outdoors When the lights go out and the sun rises, how the light-fitting looks becomes as important as how efficiently it casts light at night. Ugly fittings are an eyesore and poor quality units are a liability as the weather has a way of getting in and putting the lights out! Good looking, high quality light fitting will add to the attractiveness of a property and last for a very long time. And it’s always best to use an electrician who is experienced in installing outdoor lights, if you want your power up to be illuminating rather than sparky. URBAN FOX MAY 2018 55

Mrs Warren’s Profession Mon 21 – Sat 26 May The Little Theatre Tickets from £13.50 thelittletheatre.net
A man of many talents, Bernard Shaw’s attitude as a playwright made it virtually impossible for the theatre to accommodate his work. In 1898 he entitled a collection of three of his plays as “Plays Unpleasant”. One of them was Mrs Warren’s Profession which was not performed in public until 1902. In writing about the realities of contemporary sexual exploitation, Shaw creates a delightfully witty play about a Cambridge- educated girl meeting a mother whom she barely knows. The play reveals why Mrs Warren became a prostitute, condemns the hypocrisies relating to prostitution, and criticises the limited employment opportunities available for women in Victorian Britain. This amateur production is presented by special arrangement with The Society of Authors.

book REVIEW
Be inspired and empowered
cana of a road trip ound the dusty Ameri ar d pe ap wr e tal e -ag A heartfelt coming-of
Quietly building a reputation as one of the most exciting home-grown directors working in indie cinema, Harrogate-born Haigh appeared on the scene with the gorgeous romance Weekend, before gaining mainstream attention with his sublime and devastating forensic examination of a crumbling marriage in 45 Years. Shifting across the pond for his new project, Haigh’s Lean on Pete is a heartfelt coming-of-age tale wrapped around the dusty Americana of a road trip. It’s a stately, moving film filled
with a shared nostalgia for a childhood we may not have known but still keenly miss, a yearning for a simpler time when the pressures and stress of adulthood seemed far away; and seeing young Charley as he has the harsh world of grown-ups thrust upon him is enough to make the heartache. Fine support comes from the ever reliable Steve Buscemi and Chloë Sevigny as wily stable hands amused and halfcharmed by Charley’s naiveté.

ADVENTURE Have your holidays started to blend into one? Do you recollect where you’ve been by which book you read on your sun lounger? If you really want a holiday to remember, maybe it’s time to inject a little energy, excitement and adventure, says Kirsty France. If that all sounds a bit scary, don’t worry. You don’t have to throw yourself off a cliff, but introducing something unexpected into your holiday can make it all the more memorable. You could also give your self-esteem a real boost along the way.
GETTING STARTED
If you’re not sure exactly what kind of activity you want to try, look for a place that offers a range of different sports. Then you can do as much (or as little) as you’re comfortable with. Of course, you might already have a holiday booked. Why not find out what’s on offer while you’re there? Even luxury resorts offer sailing and water polo! If you haven’t booked yet, here are some of my favourite adventurous destinations.
LAKE DISTRICT
The Lake District has lots to offer whether you want to get into the water or not. You can try kayaking, gorge
walking, climbing or sailing. There are a few companies that offer a range of activities, particularly around Keswick and Lake Windermere. If the weather drives you inside you can also try bouldering on an indoor climbing wall. I tried it out at the Kong Adventure Centre in Keswick and was completely hooked!
NORTH DEVON
The North Devon coast is absolutely beautiful and a great place to try surfing for the first time. There are plenty of opportunities to try other water sports too. If you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground there are some epic coastal walks with fantastic views. Croyde is the classic surfer’s paradise or head to Woolacombe Bay for beginner lessons. Then you can recover on a three mile stretch of unspoilt beach or in the pub that overlooks the bay!
LONDON
You really can do absolutely anything in the capital. Paddle boarding, horse riding, zip slides or whizzing along the Thames in a speedboat. You can even slide from the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbital tower at the Olympic Park! It’s a dizzying 178m drop that takes you around the tower 12 times in just 40 seconds. Then head back into town for shopping and cocktails. What could be better?
NEW ZEALAND
If you’re going long haul, head to New Zealand. It’s a great place to explore whatever you’re interested in but for me, Queenstown on the South Island is the adventure sports capital of the world. For one thing, they invented bungee jumping. You can also go skydiving, kayaking, white water rafting and high speed jetboating and those are just the ones we did. OK, just kidding. There’s no way you’ll get me jumping out of a perfectly good plane!
BUT I’M NOT SPORTY…
The truth is, I’m not that sporty either. I push myself to try this stuff because stepping out of my comfort zone makes me feel amazing and boosts my confidence.
Why not use your holiday to try something new? You could surprise yourself! URBAN FOX MAY 2018 63

MY WAY
“Bad Dad” by David Walliams
Alexis Gray “Training is my ‘me time’… so I will move things around to fit it in”, says USSC Manager Alexis Gray I was born and brought up in the North East, attending schools in Fatfield and Gateshead. At weekends Mam and Dad played taxi driver and No.1 fan, ferrying me and my older brother James around to a multitude of sports and activities. At primary school my passion was gymnastics. I trained most days and weekends and even represented the county. I continued to enjoy sports at secondary school and became sports captain. After completing my GCSE’s and A’ levels, I went to study at Manchester Metropolitan University. I’d done well in Business Studies at school but wanted to specialise in something I was interested in too. Leisure Management seemed to fit the bill. I learnt a lot of life skills at University including budget and time management and people skills. I supported my studies, working as a Leisure Assistant at a local sports centre. I graduated with a BA Hons 2:1 in Leisure Management and decided to continue my education, studying for a MA in Marketing at Northumbria University. Surprisingly the first step on my career path was not linked to sports and leisure. After completing my Masters, I took a job as Regional Coordinator
with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport based in Corby, assisting in the management of voluntary committees and organising events and meetings for institute members. But after 2 years I realised a desk job wasn’t for me and I applied for an Assistant Manager position at Moulton Sports Complex covering maternity leave. I enjoyed the role but it was temporary and had to look for something else. I saw the role of Front of House Manager at USSC when the Centre was being built. Initially I was unsuccessful due to lack of experience, although the feedback I received was extremely positive. But after seeing that the position remained unfilled, I contacted them again and stated my case, suggesting they trained me up for the job. It was my lucky day! I was appointed as Senior Receptionist and received the support and training needed to help me progress. I was soon involved in the development of the Front of House department. As the Centre grew so did I, and I was thrilled to become Front of House Manager. My role today involves the overseeing of a range of internal processes and procedures, as well as managing the Front of House team. I love not being tied to a desk and always take time to walk around the Centre speaking to our users. Aside from the children at Uppingham School, a broad spectrum

of people use the facilities, so I’m continuously looking for ways to raise standards and keep up with industry trends. It’s a dynamic industry and is forever changing! Outside of work I am also a retained firefighter at Uppingham. It’s a great thing to do and although the training is hard, it’s definitely worth it. USSC has been fantastic in allowing me the flexibility to be on call while working at the Centre. Working shifts can be difficult in terms of achieving a work-life balance, but I enjoy what I do so it’s no real hardship. Training is my ‘me time’ – I love CrossFit - so I will move things around to fit it in. Between work, firefighting and training, things have to be organised in my life to be able to see friends and family, its all about priorities and sometimes being a little selfish!
