Because YOU’RE WORTH IT Between dye jobs, products, and styling, it’s easy to abuse our hair. So make like a celeb and put your hair through some serious rehab and fix those damaged locks.

Boden

Book a trim every 6-8 weeks to keep your hair in tip top condition and reduce the risk of the split ends. Avoid sodium-packed products, which can be very drying, and switch to a sulphate-free regime like Kérastase Bain Fluidealiste. Limit home-washing to 3 times a week tops. Invest in a moisturising everyday conditioner. The weightless formula of Living Proof No Frizz Conditioner, £21 at John Lewis, detangles, conditions and fights frizz. Restrict intense conditioning treatments and masks, which can leave hair heavy and lifeless, to just once a week. We love L’ 'Occitane Aromachologie Hair Volumising Mask, £24. If you have oily roots and dry ends, apply the hair mask to the mid-lengths and ends only. And if your hair tangles easily use a widetooth comb to gently work the mask through your hair.

Use a microfibre turban to help absorb moisture after washing. This avoids the need to use a towel to dry your hair, which can create friction that leads to frizz and breakage. Treat yourself to a Brazilian Blowout Professional Split-End Repair treatment. This is a 10 minute in-salon service which instantly repairs, mends and seals broken and split ends for up to 4 weeks. Or go all out with a Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Treatment that smooths, eliminates frizz and improves the health of the hair from roots to tips for up to 12 weeks. If you’re doing it yourself, drop the temperature on your dryer to medium or ditch the hairdryer altogether and embrace the season’s air-dried waves and kinks. Step away from the straighteners or curlers at least twice a week and the rest of the time remember to apply a heat protection formula such as Nicky Clarke’s Heat Protect Shine Spray, £12. Swap aerosol products which contain drying alcohol, for pump action

alternatives and be kinder to the environment too. Combat static with a spritz of shine spray. Wella’s SP Luxe Light Oil Spray containing almond, argan and jojoba oils is perfect for creating glossy, manageable locks. Consider ‘natural glossing’ to repair, condition and deliver ultimate softness. For an on-trend sheen, brunettes should opt for a rich honey or espresso brown and redheads a deep copper or auburn. Finally forget hat hair, a hot-thisseason pompom affair will fend off the elements when you’re out and about. And if all else fails, you could always wear it indoors too! URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2016 19

HEALTH & WELLBEING

…And

Relax

You might lust after the Gucci Sylvie or the signature red sole of a Louboutin, but when it comes to life’s little luxuries, peace of mind is priceless says Sarah Mettrick. It’s Sunday afternoon and I’m in the bath. I have no desire to be cleaner but I do need to save my sanity from being eradicated by the enemy who are still in the building probably plotting their next move. Defeat was inevitable so I decided to retreat. Taking advantage of the temporary ceasefire I created a mini spa for myself. I need some ‘me time’, to renew my energy before the next battle commences - that homework still has to be done and with my husband siding with the small people I’ve lost my only ally. I moved my five year old’s CD player into the bathroom and put on a CD that came free with a car cleaning kit…Relaxing Classics. After closing the blinds I covered the loo seat with candles to increase my sense of wellbeing and lowered myself into the bubbles. So here I am in a glorious bath inhaling scents of ylang-ylang, praying I don’t get ambushed. So why can’t I relax? Soaking in the tub is one of life’s luxuries. However ‘relaxing to order’ is a big ask and reminds me of being massaged; there’s too much pressure to enjoy it. I try to clear my mind but find myself thinking who will

leave The Bake-Off, or that my armpits need shaving. Then I get frustrated because the massage is too weak, she’s performing a deep tissue massage not dusting the sideboard. When I’ve finally stopped analysing the meringue showstoppers I tell myself there is still time to relax… and that’s when you feel it…that gentle tickle down the length of your spine to tell you your time is up. NO! NO! NO!

"I try to clear my mind but find myself thinking who will leave The Bake-Off, or that my armpits need shaving." So in my bath I’m attempting a mindful meditation when I inhale a smoky scent, certainly not that of an essential oil. Reluctantly I raise my left eyelid

I see the toilet roll is alight. I fill up Grandpa-Pig’s boat and hurl water all over the bathroom. Suddenly I feel an overwhelming urge to throw myself onto the nearest train track, all becomes clear when I see the CD cover - Bach’s Come, Sweet Death is playing. They call that relaxing?! I turn the music off (regain my love of life) and clear up the room which now resembles a failed science experiment. I throw on my trackie bottoms, a cosy jumper and a bullet proof vest and head downstairs. The homework is done, an autumn fire is crackling and a family film is about to start. The three musketeers wave white flags, apologise and we nestle down to watch the movie. I don’t watch much of it, I’m too busy looking at my little army, the three people I love most on the planet. Luxury isn’t all about fancy candles and spa treatments (although gratefully received), true luxury is having peace of mind and a full heart, taking in that perfect moment and inhaling all that is wonderful (preferably not burning toilet paper). Four hours later bed times are challenged; peace and harmony dwindle again. This time I have my ally back, he looks at me lovingly and says, “Let me run a nice bath for you darling.”

Chic

From gluten free and dairy free, to low carb and no sugar, it seems that what we eat is as fashionable as what we wear, says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts. But like many trends, is “healthy eating” a luxury that not everyone can afford? Think about the last time you were in the supermarket or doing your internet shopping. What foods were most discounted? Was it avocado, fish and celeriac or rather pizza, crisps and oven chips? This common imbalance leads many families into choosing cheaper, less healthy foods, which are often higher in sugar, less nutritious and can leave you feeling hungry. So ask yourself, would a healthy basket of food which met your needs in terms of fulfilment and nutrition, really be more expensive than the equivalent in junk food? For me what we put in our bodies is an investment in our long term health. Ingredients found in processed foods - sugars, trans fats, man-made products and chemicals - are linked to an increased risk of many diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity related conditions. By comparison ingredients and nutrients found in healthy foods - antioxidants, vitamins and minerals -can help prevent many illnesses and conditions. So instead of worrying about the damage

healthy foods do to our pocket, let’s worry instead about the damage unhealthy foods do to our bodies. I’m a big advocate of organic foods. These are foods which work with nature, not against it. They offer higher levels of animal welfare, lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers and more environmentally sustainable management of the land and natural environment. Sounds expensive? Here are some tips to make eating organic and/or healthily a more affordable luxury for everyone… Plan your meals. This prevents overloading your trolley and spending more than you need to. Not only does it enable you to buy organic and save money, but it also means less waste. Choose wisely. Pick meat cuts and vegetables carefully. An organic chicken leg is a similar price to a non-organic breast and Cavolo Nero (Black Kale) can be cheaper than the more recognised Kale.

Go frozen. Eating fresh organic berries can be quite expensive but you may find that a bag of frozen organic berries is much more cost effective. Great for compotes, smoothies and frozen yoghurt. Buy in bulk. There are many wholesale health stores around where you can buy reasonably priced organic or healthy pantry staples (without the designer label) in larger quantities. Shop local. Sometimes supermarkets are not the cheapest. A local farm shop or butcher may not be as expensive as you think, and they can also assure you of the provenance of your food. Buy in season. Purchasing fruit and vegetables in season is usually less expensive, they will taste better and will enable you to experience a wider variety of produce. Grow your own. It can be hard and expensive to go completely organic so do it gradually. Start with a few veg pots and maybe a couple of chickens. Great fun and educational for the kids too. Getting started. Begin with organic leafy greens and vegetables whose skin we eat, as these are usually more exposed to chemicals. Switch to organic milk. It’s better for you, and the cows too. Eat less. The average person eats more than is needed, so try eating less. Ditch the weekly takeaway and morning coffee and croissant stop, and you’ll soon free up cash for fresher, tastier, organic food. SWAP SHOP Save pounds at the supermarket and still nail those recipes that call for more luxurious ingredients, with these savvy store cupboard substitutions.

Saffron

The most expensive of all spices. Try replacing Saffron with Turmeric in your cooking, for a similar flavour and colour. Do use the Turmeric sparingly, as it can easily overwhelm the food.

Pine Nuts

The fanciest of all the nuts. They're smaller, cuter and have a sweet, subtle flavour. They also cost a small fortune. As toppings for salads & pasta, switch for shelled Pumpkin or Sunflower seeds instead.

Aged Balsamic Vinegar

From under £1 to the cost of a fine wine, the price of Balsamic Vinegar varies drastically. For cooking purposes, go cheap. Reduce on the hob until it thickens, and the flavour becomes more intensified.

Parmigiano Reggiano

Dried Cherries

This ‘King’ of cheeses is wasted on a Spag Bol. Substitute for a more cost effective Pecorino Romano. This is also a hard, salty Italian cheese, but perfect for grating.

Used in home-made muesli, muffins and scones, as well as winter fruit salads and puddings, dried cherries come in both sweet and sour varities. For a comparable result, swap for dried cranberries.

Mascarpone Cheese

For a delicious cheesecake on a budget, or to enrich your sauces, switch Mascarpone Cheese for a standard whipped cream cheese. Save money and calories too.

Porcini Mushrooms

These are pricey and can be hard to find in supermarkets. Substitute for Crimini Mushrooms which are more readily available and far less expensive; although admittedly you won’t get that same distinct nutty flavour.

Prosciutto

This Italian dry-cured Ham is usually eaten raw – on an antipasti platter or with melon - but can equally be eaten hot in pasta or risotto. Try thinly sliced Deli Ham for a similar taste.

Truffles

By weight this knobbly fungus is one of the most expensive foods in the world. Swap for Truffle Oil or Truffle Salt. A little salt goes a long way so share a jar with friends and store in airtight containers.

LIFE & WORK

I feel like a

millionaire

Between home, work and life, it's all too easy to lose sight of what and who we should be grateful for, says Sarah Mettrick. The lyrics blare out through the sound system…“I feel like a millionaire, I feel like a millionaire, whenever she comes around…” I am singing and dancing in the kitchen, there are certain songs that make you feel happy and this for me is one of them. I woke up with a sense of melancholy and needed lifting from my mood. Someone asked me, shortly after having my second child, how I felt about bringing children into a world full of tragedy and despair, I replied with belief and conviction when I said “Well we have to keep banging out the good ones.” I now find myself hearing questions I could never have dreamt my young children would ask me; “Mummy why are people having their heads cut off?” My daughter heard this on the radio at 11am in the morning - no watershed for broadcasting real news. The horror of such in a fictional movie would only be shown when she was tucked safely in bed dreaming of fairies and fluffy things. It seems our daily news is now one

horror story after another, with an 18 certificate to boot. I had to comfort her when she woke shaking with fear after having had a nightmare about a clown she had seen on the news. I told her I could understand her angst but it was just a silly man called Donald Trump until I realised she meant the ‘Killer Clowns’ who are popping up to scare the crap out of us - as if there wasn't enough

"We have the luxury of getting into safe warm beds each night and deliberating over which meal to take out of the freezer." doom and gloom in the world we now get the Jokers. From the utter despair in Aleppo to the desperation of innocent human

beings floating in the Mediterranean, the world seems to have gone completely mad and brings with it a sadness that hangs like a low cloud over us all. It is no wonder people want to escape the realities of the world and tune into programmes such as Strictly and The Bake Off. Ten million of us choose to get lost in dance offs and tray bakes, good wholesome happy viewing - a good antidote to EastEnders and the like which in my opinion only transfer more violence and intolerance into our already saturated brains. So if we are not aid workers or helping in the real sense of the word what can we mere mortals do at times like these? We can appreciate. I don't mean minding our pleases and thank you’s, I mean truly appreciate. We have the luxury of getting into safe warm beds each night and deliberating over which meal to take out of the freezer. From autumn walks in our beautiful countryside to performing and witnessing acts of kindness, we are lavished daily with treats we take for granted and they are blessings to absorb and heal our hearts. Oh and don't stop singing and dancing, like the song says… “I feel like a millionaire” and I hope you do too. URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2016 33

Golden

HOUR Never find time for anything? If you want time, then make it. Follow our simple tips and add a precious hour to your day.

1

Is yesterday’s ‘To Do’ list holding you back from achieving today? Simply add a few easy things which can be done quickly or even something you’ve almost completed. Ludicrous, yes, but it will make you more productive, allowing you to get today’s tasks completed more quickly.

2

Whether it’s answering a low priority email, procrastinating or giving time to people that give nothing back, there are things that we all do that limit us from having time for something else more important or enjoyable. So make a list of things you’re not going to do this week and stick to it.

3

Multi-tasking can mean that we make less progress, having to return to unfinished tasks. Don’t be a Jack (or rather Jill) of all trades, instead swap time management for attention management. Keep your focus simple and choose one thing to do well, before moving onto the next task.

prepare the kids’ lunches or get a head start on breakfast, doing just one small task before you go to bed will allow you longer to sleep and ensure you begin your day with less stress.

6

Alternatively get up an hour earlier and catch up on those essential chores before the rest of the family wake up. Or use the time for an extended shower, a more leisurely breakfast or to attend a yoga class. You’ll feel more in control and in a better place to tackle the day ahead.

"Don’t be a Jack (or rather Jill) of all trades, instead swap time management for attention management."

4

It’s hard to get the job done when a beep, buzz or notification interrupts you every 10 seconds. Turning off your alerts will help you to regain time and focus. And it’s not just the kids that need tech limits. Switch screen-time for me-time and see how much more relaxed you’ll feel.

5

Prep one thing for tomorrow. Whether you lay out your clothes,

7

Set aside 15 minutes a day to do those tasks that mount up – phoning the utility company, paying bills etc. – and take up precious me-time. Alternatively save up tasks and have a

‘maintenance day’. Boring, yes, but think of the extra time you’ll create for having fun.

8

Just as you would schedule a hair or nail appointment, schedule downtime in your diary. Rope in your friends too. You’re more likely to do it and who doesn’t need to make space in their lives for a coffee date, weekend break with the girls or a family Sunday brunch.

9

Give yourself permission to enjoy time just for you. No-one else can see that your kitchen isn’t spotless or the leaning tower of ironing, so the only person holding you back…is you. Give yourself a break. Delegate chores if you can and if all else fails, they’ll still be there tomorrow.

10

Finally look at how you’re spending your time. Keep a diary for one week, making a note of who you saw, what you did, what you put off etc. Then decide what you could have done differently and plan accordingly. Yes it might take an hour or two, but think about those you’ll be reclaiming. URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2016 35

PLAYING THE GAME We see her often floating down red carpets in swathes of chiffon and silk, but since her Oscar winning turn in 12 Years A Slave, Lupita Nyong’o has been absent from the big screen - until now. She reveals how her latest movie is simply a complex game of chess‌

LIFE & WORK

It has been three years since Lupita Nyong’o’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for her portrayal of longsuffering slave Patsey, and whilst the 33-yearold’s star status has exploded, she has actually had very little screen time. She starred in one of the biggest films of the decade, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, playing space pirate Maz Kanata, and lent her vocal talents to Disney’s Jungle Book remake as a protective wolf mother, as well as making her Broadway debut with Eclipsed, earning herself a Tony Award nomination, but is it in The Queen of Katwe that she will make her return, proper. The film follows the true life tale of Phiona Mutesi, a young Ugandan girl who defied all the odds to become a chess champion. Nyong’o plays Phiona’s mother, Harriet, and though not the central character, she is nonetheless a formidable presence onscreen. Parallel to her daughter’s gorgeous innocence, Harriet is the one who must strive to protect and guide the young prodigy, even if that sometimes comes across as cynical. “Harriet has a lot of weight on her shoulders. She had her first child at 15 and by the time we meet her she's barely 30,” explains the ever-articulate Nyong’o. “She's lived a very tough life and been raised in a very unstable family and now as a mother she's trying to keep her family together. So it was a challenge for me to play someone who has a completely opposite outlook on life than I do.” A story of hope and big dreams, Queen of Katwe paints a different portrait of Africa, without glossing over its problematic history. Phiona’s father died from AIDS when she was only three, her older sister too, died from some unknown malady, and when she was 9, Phiona was forced drop out of school simply because her mother was unable to afford it. But this doesn’t take way from the tremendous spirit and joy that is equally ubiquitous, but perhaps less portrayed, in Africa, and it was this aspect that drew Nyong’o to the film.

“There's a message involving hope and sacrifice and being able to fight your way past obstacles in order to achieve your dreams,” she declares proudly. “Poverty affects us all. There are people living below the poverty line all over the world, but that shouldn't define who you are or who you can become. There's a line in the film: 'You belong where you believe you belong.' Where you come from doesn't necessarily mean that that's where you're going to end up in life.” “That's one of beautiful themes about this film that truly resonated with me,” she continues. “I've also lived the dream of being able to achieve my ambition to become an actor. Phiona's story is remarkable not just because it's a true story, but because it serves as an inspiration to people all across the African continent who can see themselves as part of a larger platform.”

“One of the lessons of the film and a useful life lesson that we can borrow from chess is that you may need to sacrifice a piece or two in order to win the larger game.” Nyong’o tapped into her own experiences during filming. Underneath her radiant smile and cheery persona is an inherent steeliness, perhaps due to her own family history and a struggle for freedom; a story worthy of its own Hollywood script. The second of six children from a prominent Kenyan family, Nyong’o was born during a time of chaos when her father, Peter Anyang' Nyong'o, was exiled from Africa due to political unrest and the disappearance and presumed murder of his brother. As a result, Nyong’o was born in Mexico, where her father was teaching, and her dad has long been a role model for the actress. “My father's philosophy was that it doesn't matter what kind of profession

you choose in life, just make sure you strive to be the best at whatever you do” she says. “He always taught me that it's important to strive for excellence and greatness in the world. That has always guided me.” A natural inclination towards the arts eventually motivated Nyong’o to major in African and Film Studies at Hampshire College, going on to achieve her master’s degree at the prestigious Yale drama school. During her brief, but stellar time in the limelight, Nyong’o has broken down barriers and forged her own place in an industry which can too often ignore minorities. In 2014 she was announced as the face of French beauty house, Lancôme, the first black celebrity to act as ambassador for the brand, and she has appeared on the cover of US Vogue twice, making her only the second African woman to ever do so. She has a power and refined grace that commands attention, giving the impression that she is always two steps ahead, much like a game of chess… “I've tried to be very attentive to my own inner compass and tried to rely on my vision for myself first and foremost and to be true to that vision. I'm constantly reflecting on where I am and where I need to go and what the obstacles are that I might face along the way,” she explains. “One of the lessons of the film and a useful life lesson that we can borrow from chess is that you may need to sacrifice a piece or two in order to win the larger game.” 2017 will see Nyong’o reprise her role as Maz Kanata in Star Wars: Episode VIII, and later this year she begins filming Black Panther, the latest franchise addition to the Marvel Comics universe. The superhero flick poses a new challenge for the star as she will be required to do many of the action sequences herself, but Nyong’o simply takes it in her stride, saying with her trademark smile: “It's going to be a new experience for me and I'm looking forward to having a lot of fun doing it!”

Want to recreate the glamour of a London boutique hotel in your own home? Opulent textures and materials, mixed with beautiful furniture and finishes, is all that you need to fashion this elegant and timeless look, says Zoe Hubbard of Maison Interiors. Here’s how to get the London look…

Colour

Typically a luxury interior will have a neutral palette, with calming tones of grey, taupe, brown, champagne, ivory and mink, occasionally with black contrast details. But if you can’t live without colour, it’s still possible to create a luxe look. Simply keep to a neutral back drop and add splashes of jewel colours such as emerald, ruby, sapphire, magenta and teal. Use pattern sparingly. Damask, stripes and clean geometric patterns can all work well.

Material

Luxurious living is all about using an assortment of different fabrics, finishes and textures. Opt for a silk or crushed velvet sofa with as many scatter cushions as you can squeeze on. Use a mix of different materials, making

sure to tie in your curtain fabric in silk or sateen. Choose high gloss finishes for occasional items such as a side or console table, along with chrome, lacquered woods, marble and stone.

Lighting

Set the scene for your opulent room by layering your lighting. Use candles and a fire to create ambient lighting, that will soften shadows on people's faces and fill the space with a warm glow. Team this with uplighters to highlight objects – art work, cornicing etc. - and add depth and dimension. Finally incorporate ornamental lighting such as chandeliers and decorative table and floor lamps for sparkle and interest.

Flooring

Opt for high lacquered wooden floors or high sheen marble tiles, then add warmth with a large area rug. Thick,

Zinc at Maison Interiors

LONDON LOOK fluffy and luxurious shag pile rugs work well to create warmth, but for a higher-end look, it’s wool all the way. Soft but durable you definitely get what you pay for. Choose a neutral colour to reflect your interior scheme or for added interest opt for a simple self-pattern design.

Accessories

The beauty of this look, is that you’re not restricted to a specific design period. Whether you love retro, contemporary or antique, all can be adapted to create a luxe feel. Whatever your style, ensure that accessories are dazzling, reflective and confident. Choose pieces which catch the eye, set the tone and say something about you. Precious metals, glass and mirror are perfect for decorative objects. Finally you don’t have to opt for the most expensive fabrics and furnishings for all aspects of this interior scheme. There are plenty of alternatives that will create the same look without breaking the bank and will still stand the test of time in terms of design and durability. URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2016 43

women want What

When selling a highend property it’s the finer things that count, says Sam McDonald of Fothergill Wyatt Estate Agents.

Here’s just some of the luxury features, products and brands, most likely to turn heads:

1 Kitchen

MHS Radiators

4

3 Bedroom

Walk-in and fitted wardrobes creating bespoke storage solutions, are a favourite among female house-hunters, and nothing compares to the luxury and reliability of solid wood. Opt for good quality flooring too; wool carpet tops the bill for its appearance and super soft feel underfoot.

Handmade all the way. Solid timber kitchen units and islands, coupled with worktops fashioned from Corian, granite, solid wood or quartz are most desired. Brands including Rangemaster, Fisher & Paykel, Quooker, Sub Zero and Wolf feature highly on the list of ‘must haves’ appliances.

4 Bathroom

2 Lounge

5 Garden

Living spaces which integrate high tech features such as sound systems, lighting and heating, offer luxury at the touch of a button. Full height radiators are en vogue for 2016. This sculptural radiator is a work of art. Simply alter the configuration of the ‘Curval’ panels for a brand new look.

Hammonds

Underfloor heated Italian tiles, wet rooms, oversized basins with concealed taps and the classic free-standing bath, rank among the most sought-after bathroom features. Gerberit, Burlington and Vola are popular with brand savvy women. Outside, mature landscaped gardens with additional living space (summer house, gazebo or office pod) are appealing. And tasteful ‘entertaining’ areas featuring fire-pits, mood lighting and cutting-edge music systems are proving to be more than just a one hit wonder for buyers.

Arrival (12A) 1hr 56mins Opens nationwide Fri 11 Nov 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org Denis Villeneuve, the director of Prisoners and Sicario returns with an intelligent, gripping sci-fi film for grown-ups. Amy Adams stars as Dr Louise Banks, an expert linguist who is recruited by the US government in the shape of no nonsense Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker) when a series of vast, unidentified objects appear on earth. As humankind edges closer to a global war brought about by the new arrivals, Louise and her team face a race against time to try and communicate with the alien presence and discover whether they are friend or foe.

Opening with a montage that rivals Pixar’s Up for bracing emotional power, Arrival is perhaps best thought of as a sci-fi film without the sci-fi. Although it hits certain familiar tropes including mysterious alien craft and otherworldly creatures, for all its sci-fi imagery Arrival is primarily about humanity: our time on earth, our language and how we deal with loss. It takes our current world situation - with what seems like daily escalating tension between world

superpowers - and uses it to ask questions about the nature of humanity and communication. If aliens did land, could we reply with one voice as one ‘Earth People’? Confirming herself as perhaps the best actress working in American film, Amy Adams (Nocturnal Animals, The Master) is superb as Dr. Banks, supported by Whitaker and Jeremy Renner as an enthusiastic mathematician.

James Highwood, host of the popular TV programme British Justice, is on trial at the Old Bailey for murder. Refusing his solicitor’s plea to obtain legal representation, he is conducting his own defence – admitting responsibility but pleading manslaughter. His claim that the jury alone is responsible for the verdict brings him into conflict with the judge, and the desire to have his intentions understood causes problems with the prosecuting counsel. But is it manslaughter, or is it in fact murder? Terence Frisby’s sharply written, absorbing courtroom drama, will grip you tight and not let go until you are faced with the final question - Guilty or Not Guilty?

Packed with high drama, with hilarious consequences, be enchanted by all the mayhem that ensues. Together they will perform new material from Melua’s forthcoming recording project, as well as a selection of classic songs from Melua’s six album back catalogue.

At the centre of these extraordinary tales of clockwork dolls, magical glasses, ghostly voices and sensual courtesans is the vivid imagination of the drunken Romantic poet Hoffmann. SUITE

Dreams Planning an extravagant city break this winter? Just as your wardrobe says something about you, these suites tell their own inspiring tale of luxury.

PALAZZINAG

ATLANTIS BY GIARDINO

The Palazzina G’s 22 rooms, including seven suites/apartments, boast canal views and “tailor-made” luxury most elements in the hotel are made to measure by French designer extraordinaire Philippe Starck. Taking 16th century Venetian design to the 21st century, large mirrors are made ornate with back lighting and bathrooms are clad in travertine marble and colourful mosaics. A mix of antique and bespoke furniture gives the central Venetian rooms a unique place both in history and current times.

The design of the rooms is a play on contradictions - city vs. countryside and angular forms vs. flowing shapes. Handmade furnishings and the finest fabrics from manufacturers like Pierre Frey, Altfield and Zimmer + Rohde have lent the 95 rooms and suites a refined charm. Think luxuriantly upholstered walls, leather, wood, and bathrooms decorated with natural stone. The hotel’s Dipiù spa bath products, inspired by southern Mediterranean gardens, are available in the rooms.

Hotels and images designhotels.com

Venice In the epicentre of Venice, on the Grand Canal, PalazzinaG has the atmosphere of a home full of charm and vitality, steeped in history. Privacy, flexibility, luxury, and elegance are the fundamental elements of this exclusive property. Behind the façade of the three-story hotel - a classical 16th-century shell - generations of noble and haute-bourgeois families have lived.

LE ROCH

Zurich Located at the foot of Zurich’s Uetliberg mountain, Atlantis is uniquely positioned to enjoy the surrounding woods and the lure of the city centre. Referencing the former Atlantis hotel’s glamour - guests included Steve McQueen, Mohammed Ali, and Freddie Mercury who once gave an impromptu performance in the bar - the new Atlantis by Giardino uses luxurious materials and customised furniture to enchant today’s guest.

PALAZZINAG

LE ROCH HOTEL & SPA

Paris Location is everything - and the elegant 37-room Le Roch, nestled between Place Vendôme, the Opéra Garnier, and the Louvre, undoubtedly boasts one of the best in the city. MY WAY

Alexa Chung My fashion no-no. Matching shoes and handbags!

Rosie Charlesworth “I love the merry-go-round of fashion” says Cavells’ Stylist Rosie Charlesworth. I was born and bred in Somerset, the youngest of four children. My passion as a child, was ponies. I’d spend my school holidays riding my pony, peanut butter sandwiches in one pocket and pony nuts in the other. Growing up in the pre-mobile phone era, my poor mother would have no idea where I was, but there was never a sense of worry, just that I was out in the fresh air having fun! I was educated at a small Catholic girls’ school in a village not far from Bristol, where my academic talents started off well but by the time I took my O’Levels had waned somewhat! However, this is where my love for fashion started, I spent many a happy hour designing and making various items of clothing, fuelled by the fact that my mother had wardrobes bulging with beautiful clothes that gave her an enviable style. Unfortunately, by the time I was 17 I’d lost both my parents and even though I had carried on with my further education looking at a possible career in law, my true love was still fashion. At 19 I was offered a job with an independent men’s and ladies fashion

retailer working between two stores in Taunton and Bristol. I loved this job. This was the beginning of what was, and still is, my life in fashion. My role developed as the company grew, working closely with the owner as Area Manager. Buying, merchandising, window displays, hiring and firing for what had grown into 5 stores in Bristol and Bath. But as much as I loved this life, the days were long and after I was blessed with the birth of my son Teddy, and my relationship subsequently broke up, I made the heart wrenching decision to leave Somerset and move to Rutland, to be close to my family. When Teddy was one, I started working part-time as a sales assistant at Cavells of Oakham. Working for Cavells, where family is so important has helped immensely, especially when Teddy was younger. Over the last 10 years my role has developed vastly. I am now Cavells’ Stylist, and I absolutely love it! From a buying trip to London one day, to a fashion event the next, it’s just so varied. The best part of my job is the fashion mornings that we hold in store. This

is a perfect time for me to convey my excitement for the new season’s trends. I also enjoy helping the women who attend tackle their worries about getting their style right and working with them to create their perfect capsule wardrobe. Cavells has over 80 amazing clothing brands, from the well-known such as Joseph and Mulberry to the more eclectic Essentiel and Custommade, which means we can offer something for everyone, for every occasion. Christmas is rapidly approaching, but even before the cold weather has a chance to really take hold and the seasonal decorations are taken down, the new spring ‘17 stock will be hitting the shop floor. But this is exactly why I love the merry-go-round of fashion.
