At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field. easy That isn’t to say that fashion was an industry to crack. Did being a woman have anything to do with it?
“One of my first struggles was the fact that I was a textile designer,” she explains if with a laugh. “People would say that you’re a textile designer then you can’t a make dresses. So I suppose that was revolution.”
Introduced to the colourful world of at textiles by her mother, Zandra studied Medway College of Art in Kent, before securing a place at London’s The Royal College of Art.
“I do think that being in London at the time that I started, when everyone was But looking toward the UK, was helpful. I don’t think that there’s such an equal that opportunity at present. I don’t think our current government spends enough on promoting fashion when compared to the French government, for example. So therefore, unfortunately, you don’t necessarily reap the benefits.”

Sleek & Chic
Prominently featured on the AW15 catwalks, the sleek pony is both quick and versatile. Placed on the bottom of the hairline or lower down the neck, this straight, smooth style creates a classical look.
GET THE LOOK
‘80s Revival
GET THE LOOK Saturate your hair with mousse and scrape back using your fingers and twist into a knotted ponytail. Dry off the hair using a hairdryer and then brush the ends to create a candy floss effect. Secure with a nostalgic ‘80s plastic comb.
Using tongs lightly curl the hair approximately ¾ down the length of the hair. This “demi-tonging” technique works with the natural texture and movement of the hair, looking to enhance rather than change the natural flow of your hair. The top can be altered depending on your cut - wear it with a fringe, swept back or tied high at the back.
Palmer Harding
Blow-dry your hair straight before smoothing with hair straighteners. Bush back, position the pony tail at the desired height and secure with a hairband or bungee tie. Hold the look in place with lightweight matte hair spray.
Crown of Horns Braids have been possibly overdone in the last few seasons, but this knotted variation featured at the Palmer// Harding show stood out for its “crown” appearance.
JW Anderso n
Designer JW Anderson’s collection featured undone updos inspired by club girls who quickly fixed their hair during a night out, #throwingback to the sights and sounds of the ‘80s.
Boho Brit Girl Tousled and texturised curls were a staple at LFW. Inspired by designer Matthew Williamson I love this slightly undone, hippy look, coined the “boho brit girl”.

Hair
The best place to spot emerging trends for tresses was London Fashion Week. Gianni Greco of Moda Greco Hair Designers tells us how to achieve hot-from-the catwalk hair.
GET THE LOOK Starting with day-old clean hair, create a rough French braid going from one ear across to the other ear. Pin in place for shorter hair or keep braiding around the back of the head if you have longer hair, before securing. Don’t worry about being too neat as the undone look is a key theme for AW15 hair. HEALTH & WELLBEING
FITspiration Even if exercise doesn’t excite you, the health benefits of an active lifestyle make it essential to find at least one activity you enjoy, says our own Ms Motivator, Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts.
Here are just a few ideas to get you started.
GYM
The most popular option but often short lived. Keep motivated by varying what you do. Pros: weatherproof, lots of exercise options, professionals around to help, meet like-minded people. Cons: cost, contractual tie in, some are intimidated or lack confidence using the equipment. Feeling daunted? Join a women only gym or sessions.
SWIMMING
An exercise virtually everyone can get involved with and most will enjoy. Pros: low impact, can often do even with injuries, water provides a natural resistance.
Cons: cost, often done too leisurely, difficult to progress fitness and muscle development. Try Swimfit challenges to keep you motivated.
CLASSES
Classes are a great way for women to get into exercise in a more relaxed and fun environment.
Cons: very few, except if you have injuries or conditions where you shouldn’t raise the heart rate.
Pros: great for trying new things – boxing, body pump, circuits - and meeting people, pay as you go.
Usually involving a mix of cardio and resistance work in a circuit based format.
Cons: depending on group size instructor often unable to correct technique, progression restricted.
Pro: a great all-rounder, hard work but fun, gets you outdoors and meeting new people.
YOGA / PILATES
Cons: weather, cost, and depending on group size instructor often unable to correct technique.
Pros: most/all levels can get involved, can help with injuries and is good for mental wellbeing.
DO IT YOURSELF
Yoga is great for flexibility, while Pilates focusses on core strength and posture.
Cons: depending on class style, not always a good workout for the heart or muscle tone.
HIIT WORKOUTS
Involves spurts of high intensity exercise, followed by periods of rest or recovery. Pros: great for fat burning, doesn’t require equipment, can be done regularly with limited time.

NEW-TOOTH
Technology Are you inspired by Cheryl Fernandez Versini’s regular gleaming row of pearly whites? Or maybe you’re down with the shift toward a more characterful mouth, like Lara Stone or Keira Knightly.
It might not be possible to swap your smile with the fashion season but it’s still astonishing that, in just a few short decades, a visit to the dentist has been transformed from a dreaded annual trauma to a trend-led cosmetic treatment says Alif Moosajee dental surgeon at Oakdale Dental. Of course regular check-ups are still part of a healthy lifestyle, not just to ensure you can still eat an apple when you’re eighty, but also to offer an early detection system for all sorts of health concerns. But this month we’re talking strictly aesthetics so back to those trendy teeth and the technology that’s making them more accessible for all of us.
Most treatments start with a dental impression. This used to mean gagging on goo-filled trays which always felt far too big for your mouth. Now some dentists have entered the digital age and use a camera linked to specialist software to create a virtual model of your mouth. The trend for teens to wear “grills” as a badge of honour was hijacked years ago by celebs including Gwen Stefani who made it acceptable for grown-ups to get their smile straightened. Today, most adults choose subtler orthodontics but the results are no less spectacular. Just take a look at Demi Moore whose dental work took years off (ok she probably had other work done too but look at those teeth). Happily we’re over the blinding flash of full beam whites and as we’ve moved to more natural tones, technological advancements mean whitening treatments have also become gentler.
Straighten up like Gwen
Demi M oore’s had so me wo rk
The results are more predictable too, so you won’t wake up with the dental equivalent of peroxide blonde when you wanted honey highlights. For a badly broken down tooth, a crown used to mean multiple appointments and a temporary cap while you waited for your permanent “crash helmet”. Now the same software that creates a virtual model of your mouth means your dentist can design and custom make a crown which will fit perfectly, while you wait. If you’re still a bit dental-phobic, rest assured that better local anaesthetics have removed the post-procedure whooze factor along with the pain too. So there’s really no reason not to get your grin fixed.

Published in 1925 the novel is created from two short stories, Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street and the unfinished The Prime Minister. ritish musician Joss Stone shares the artistic inspiration behind her latest album, Water for Your Soul. For someone who has been in the public eye since she was just 15 years old, Joss Stone is remarkably grounded. She still lives in the Devon home she grew up in and has a humble approach to life and her career in music. Aside from her very public bust up with EMI Records and some controversy surrounding her advocation of cannabis, her 13 years as a soul superstar have been relatively scandal free. Case in point: you won’t catch Stone stumbling drunk out of a West End nightclub, because it’s simply not her style. For the past year she has been holed away recording her seventh studio album, Water for Your Soul, which was released in July. Under the musical guidance of Damian Marley (son of reggae legend Bob) with whom she was in super group Super-Heavy, it holds promise to be a triumphant return to form for Stone, who hopes to match the glorious success of her debut record The Soul Sessions. “I believe that these songs are like water for the soul,” she says. “It’s like watering a seed so that it can grow and evolve. In my own life, my water has always been music. I think of music as being something that inspires and moves you,” says Stone on the subject of her creative process. She is a self-confessed flower child - a persona which is entirely authentic - often performing barefoot,
there is something reminiscent of Janis Joplin about her, and this openness and need for a connection with the spiritual is more evident than ever on this record, which has several reggae tracks on it. “It’s more of a world music album with R&B, hip-hop, and reggae, which serves as a kind of inspiration for most of the tracks. Reggae has always been part of my life and I’ve always been drawn to that sound and to a happy, bouncy kind of soul,” she explains. If recording an ambitious new album wasn’t enough, Stone also set herself the mammoth task of playing in every country on Earth as part of her ongoing Total World Tour; the inspiration for
“The only reason I’m connecting, and the only reason I’m there at all, is because I make music.” which came during a particularly special concert in the mountains of Japan for the Fuji Rock festival. “I was absolutely gobsmacked by how the mountain looked when we finally reached the top and how absolutely different it was from everything else I’d ever seen in my life,” she says, “it was raining, but everyone was so happy and dancing, I remember
when one song ended all the people screamed and clapped. And then the second I lifted the mic to my mouth, 40,000 people went silent. That was such an incredibly moving and beautiful moment. That’s when it struck me: the only reason I’m connecting, and the only reason I’m there at all, is because I make music.” With 40 concerts booked and many more to be added, the tour is more than just an opportunity to share her music with the entire world; at every gig local artists will be invited to join her and her band onstage to perform and she wishes to contribute to the local communities saying “I want to be able to spend time with a charitable organization in each country. That’s why this tour is very different from others and it’s very important to me.” This sense of duty and gratitude for her success is incredibly refreshing. After all, it would be easy for her to feel resentful and frustrated; her debut album achieved unprecedented success for such a young artist, going triple platinum in the UK alone, but the songs were all covers and none of her original material has come close to the same level of sales. During her time in the spotlight, the press has often been unkind, mocking her when her Devon accent developed a Transatlantic twang, and labelling her as a hippie airhead - seemingly forgetting that she was a fragile young woman going through her most awkward, teenage years under the gaze of the entire world. The harsh reality of becoming an overnight sensation is that adoring fans can fall as quickly out of love as they fell in. But Stone is a true artist. The fame
is an almost unnecessary side effect of doing the thing she loves most in the world; for her, singing is not an option, it is as essential as breathing. “I put so much of my soul into my music and I need to have all those emotions and spirit be a part of all that. I see myself as an artist and I want to indulge my creativity and ultimately that’s why I think I’ve been able to reach as many people as I have
over the years. It’s important to keep pushing yourself musically and not repeat yourself. That’s where the excitement and beauty of making music lies.”
Water for Your Soul may not be a ground-breaking musical masterpiece, and it is unlikely to match the phenomenal status of her debut, but we cannot help feeling that Stone has much more to offer. Her musical and
creative accomplishments extend past just record sales; her charity work and positive attitude indicate that Stone is the real deal. It might seem like she has been around forever but at only 28, the blueeyed, flower child from Devon with the voice of a soul titan may surprise us yet.
Water for Your Soul is out now and Joss Stone will be bringing her Total World Tour to the UK later this month URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2015 35

After witnessing an act of protest vandalism in the street, laundry factory worker Maud Watts finds herself drawn to the local suffragettes. Deciding to join the fight after seeing Emmeline Pankhurst speak, Maud and her fellow suffragettes face opposition and persecution from an increasingly brutal state.

A timely and righteously angry film, Suffragette arrives with feminism, equality and women’s rights, an urgent and pressing conversation both on and off line. By taking the focus away from the recognisable names like the Pankhursts and following the fictional Maud’s story, Suffragette is able to give a more personal view to the fight for equality. We’re left in no doubt of what determination it takes to make a stand; and what it takes away from
the women involved as one by one Maud’s husband, co-workers and neighbours turn against her. With a powerfully committed central performance from Mulligan and superb support across the board Suffragette should feature prominently in next year’s award season. Fittingly the film ends with a list of dates when women achieved the vote in different countries, an urgent reminder of what has been achieved, and how much more remains to be done.

GOING
Global
Whether you’re a world traveller, wannabe wanderer or simply inspired by your favourite holiday destination, Zoe Hubbard from Maison Interiors shows you how to put your home decor on the road to a global look.
Moroccan Madness Scandinavian Retreat
In The Tropics
Colour: your go to palette consists of whites, soft dove grey and soothing tones of nature.
Colour: introduce a fruit cocktail of colours from emerald green, terracotta orange and flamingo pink to juicy mango and sunshine yellow. The braver the better!
Senses: appeals to our sense of touch, so think rustic textures including solid wood, metal and natural stone. Walls: paint your walls brilliant white or introduce texture through reclaimed timber and/or brick. Complete the look with some bold abstract modern artwork. Floors: opt for good quality wooden floorboards or a textured floor tile. Add warmth with faux sheepskin and cowhide rugs.
Images: Maison Interiors
Décor: Scandinavian design is very minimalistic - so de-clutter! Stay simple with scaled back furniture. A wood burning stove will create the perfect hideaway feel.
Senses: appeals to our sense of sight, so go large with pattern and prints. Walls: paint walls in contrasting bright colours or wallpaper with designs incorporating oversized palm leaves, tropical flowers and hummingbirds. Floors: opt for solid wood or natural fibres such as coir, jute and sisal, to create a rustic beach paradise. Décor: get lost in a jungle of BIG indoor plants, rustic furniture and accent scatters. Mix and match fabrics and textures for a vibrant tropical look.
Colour: opt for bright magnetic colours reflecting the desert - deep reds, burnt oranges and sunset yellows - or for a cooler alternative try aqua, turquoise and teal, reflecting ocean hues. Senses: appeals to our sense of smell so fill the air with rich aromas. Burn incense or some scented candles. Walls: architectural elements are crucial to achieving this look, think arched doorways and keyhole windows. Paint the walls in your chosen palette, or add uneven finishes for texture and character. Floors: team neutral tiles with brightly patterned Persian rugs or opt for a striking Moroccan tile design. Décor: geometric soft furnishings teamed with wrought iron occasional pieces create that downtown Marrakesh vibe. Accessorise with colourful glass and natural greenery.

HOME
Shopping Whenever you’re house-hunting, you probably have a list of must-have features – for us it’s a Carrie Bradshaw wardrobe. We asked Sam McDonald of estate agents Fothergill Wyatt to give us the lowdown on what’s inspiring Leicestershire’s home buyers to make an offer this month.

HOMES & GARDENS
1 Period Drama
Sash windows, decorative coving and picture rails rank high on buyer’s lists of sought after period features. Avoid your home looking like a Jane Austen film set by blending period characteristics with elements of modern family living such as vibrant colours, geometric patterns and practical yet stylish contemporary furniture.
2
2 Woodn’t it be Lovely
While open plan kitchens are in, a more traditional style living room which can be used either as adult space or communal family area, remains in demand. Wood is the fuel of choice, so many buyers are seeking out properties with anything from original cast iron open fireplaces to contemporary wood-burning stoves, to create a cosy ambiance for winter days.
3 Kitchen’s Open

3 5 Blank Canvas
The ability to congregate in one place where food can be cooked and eaten in a more relaxed setting is a firm favourite for families. The architectural benefits of this open plan living include improved natural light and ventilation, while the addition of soft furnishings will create a plush grown up entertaining space. Upscale integrated appliances and solid work tops also featured highly on home owner’s wish lists.
A lot of buyer’s dreams revolve around expressing their personal style. Whether it’s the opportunity to add some of the features already mentioned or simply a personalisation on the decoration, they want the ability to put their own stamp on a property. A blank canvas is always a good selling point so if you’re prepping your home to put it on the market, opt for a neutral palette coupled with simple furnishings and allow your buyer to create their own work of art.

6 Hall the Way
Spa style luxury is coming home with more of us seeking to make our bathrooms a sanctuary of wellbeing not just a place to wash. Master suites are proving popular among those looking to create a boutique style hotel interior, while wet rooms, high pressure showers, whirlpool and freestanding tubs continue to win favour with prospective buyers.

First impressions count and nothing looks better than a bright, well presented entrance hall. Tiled and timber flooring remain both popular and practical for this high traffic area, and buyers continue to look for innovative solutions for ensuring shoes and coats are hidden from view. Streamline cabinets and false walls offer two stylish hideaway options.

Have you ever found yourself bored on a Saturday afternoon, popping to Fosse Park and coming home with yet more stuff you probably don’t need? Apparently shopping accounts for one in every five trips a woman makes. A quick office survey and a few blushes prompted us to ask, isn’t there more to us? No one is going to look back on her life and wish she’d spent more time shopping. Or watching tv, which tops the list of leisure activities for adults in the UK.

There are 1,440 minutes in each day and research reveals that we have roughly one quarter of those minutes for free time. Those researchers probably didn’t take into account super busy Urban Fox readers. But have you ever stopped to think about whether you could spend your spare time on more worthwhile pursuits? As we approach the biggest shopping binge of the year, we’ve been investigating some more inspiring experiences for you to try. We’re not talking about joining a weekly exercise or art class. This is about taking some time out for an experience that could change your life, transform your outlook, or at least make lasting memories.

MY WAY
Susan McEniff
“My Three Peak Challenge was a small mountain to climb compared to trying to feed your children when you have no money” says Charity Link’s Susan McEniff I grew up in a working class, tight-knit, Irish community in Birmingham. At the age of 6 my parents were invited into school for a class choir performance and unbeknown to them I’d ditched my school uniform in favour of a tartan pinafore dress teamed with yellow polo neck jumper. I’m not sure whether I was trying to make a political statement about conformity or celebrating difference - it certainly wasn’t a fashion statement - but I recall my parents and teacher had plenty to say! As I got older I was interested in Psychology and Sociology, so when the time came I opted for an all-encompassing Behavioural Sciences degree at the University of Huddersfield. My first job after university was as a telemarketer, and although I’d somewhat fallen into it, I knew I wanted to progress in that field, so went on to complete a CIM Post Graduate Diploma at DMU. I worked in various marketing roles over the years, including Senior Marketing Executive for Jessops (where I met my husband Paul) and Marketing Manager at The Works, each time moving on to either progress my career or take on new challenges. Then in 2008 as the recession hit the retail sector, the unthinkable happened. Pregnant with my second child (my first child Finn was 2), I was made redundant. I approached a number of recruitment agencies and was open about my pregnancy. But despite my experience, I was not put forward for any interviews. I stumbled across a Charity Link advert for a Fundraising Manager. In the past I’d enjoyed working on Corporate Social Responsibility Programmes and the more I mulled it over, I realised this would be a real opportunity to make a positive contribution to the community. At interview I explained my impending arrival and thankfully they saw past this and instead focussed on what I could bring to the organisation. I started in May, Bea was born in August
and I returned from maternity leave the following January. A year later I was promoted to Marketing Director.

Feel good exercise Charity Link is Walking, running and cycling an amazing organisation helping over 8,000 local vulnerable adults and children who are facing hardship. They help in such an inspirational way by providing basic needs from simple food parcels to kindness and dignity. One of my greatest challenges is breaking down the misconceptions regarding poverty. In-work poverty has outstripped out-of-work poverty for the first time and sadly there are too many people desperately struggling, too many parents going without food, so their children can eat. I’m extremely passionate about my work and enthused by the dedication of the team, including volunteers who are prepared to walk up mountains, over glass and fire, and work within the community to raise vital funds.
Away from work, my biggest challenge is helping my children (Finn, 9 and Bea, 7) negotiate the world around them. My son was born three months prematurely and diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, which presents constant challenges for him and for me as a mum. I want to ensure that both my children are able live life to the full, to be able to reach their potential, celebrate difference and to be proud of who they are. In return they are my support team, my inspiration to never give up, no matter how hard the task ahead may be.
