Our daily schedules are jammed packed, and we need the right amount of energy to see us through our day to day activities.

Setting a goal to regularly exercise will help improve your heart and lung efficiency. You don’t have to go all out. It’s better to commit to 30 minutes 3 times a week and stick to it, than an hour every day which you consistently fail to do.

Eating a healthy well-balanced diet will also give you enough energy to fuel your daily activities.

CHICKEN & BUTTERNUT MADRAS Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 large onion, chopped 6 British chicken thigh fillets, cut into chunks 2 tbsp Patak’s Madras Spice Paste 1 small butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 3cm cubes 400g chopped tomatoes

150g pot natural yogurt 28g fresh coriander, leaves roughly chopped Naan, to serve

Heat the oil over a medium heat in a large saucepan and cook the onion for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add the chicken and cook for a further 3–4 minutes.

Stir in the curry paste, squash, tomatoes and 150ml of water.

Cover and simmer for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the squash is tender and the chicken is cooked through with no pink meat.

Divide between shallow bowls and top with a spoonful of yogurt and a sprinkle of coriander. Serve with warm naan bread.

Cook’s Tip: For a meat-free version, swap the chicken for paneer cheese.

SQUASH & SMOKED CHEDDAR PIZZA Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 400g butternut squash, sliced 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp fresh rosemary leaves 2 x 220g packs Northern Dough Co. Original Frozen Pizza Dough, defrosted Plain flour, for rolling 145g tub red chilli pesto with tomato 100g cherry tomatoes, halved 150g oak smoked cheddar, coarsely grated

Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. Cut the butternut squash into even-sized chunks. Place on a large, non-stick baking sheet and toss in the olive oil and rosemary.

Spread out evenly and roast for 20 minutes until tender.

Meanwhile, roll each dough out onto a floured surface to 25cm rounds and place on 2 pizza trays or baking sheets. Spread the surface with the red chilli pesto.

Raise the oven temperature to 220°C, gas mark 7. Arrange the roasted squash and tomatoes on top of the dough then scatter with cheese. Bake for 10–15 minutes until the pizzas are cooked through and golden brown.

Cut into wedges and serve warm.

Cook’s Tip: Feeding young children, swap the chilli pesto for a regular tomato pesto.

BUTTERNUT MAC & CHEESE Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Serves: 4-6 Ingredients: 500g butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into 4cm chunks 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 tbsp chopped fresh sage 1 tbsp olive oil 225g macaroni 40g butter 40g plain flour 600ml semi skimmed milk 175g Cornish cheddar mature, grated

Preheat the oven to 190°C, gas mark 5. Put the squash in a roasting tin and scatter over the garlic and sage, then drizzle over the oil. Roast for 30 minutes until the squash is tender and golden.

Meanwhile, cook the macaroni in boiling water for 8–10 minutes until tender. Drain well and set aside.

Melt the butter in a pan and stir in the flour. Remove from the heat and gradually stir in the milk to form a smooth sauce. Return to the heat and cook, stirring continuously, until it comes to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 2 minutes. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in two thirds of the grated cheese.

Preheat the grill to high. Stir the macaroni into the cheese sauce, then carefully fold in the squash, taking care not to break it up. Spoon the mixture into an ovenproof dish and scatter over the rest of the cheese. Place under the grill for 3–5 minutes until bubbling.

Cook’s Tip: Make a double quantity and freeze a batch for up to one month.

Plum DISH The humble plum is capable of great things in both sweet and savoury cooking.

PAN-FRIED PORK WITH PLUMS Serves: 2 Ingredients: 2 British pork chops 8 plums, halved and stones removed 2 tbsp light brown muscovado sugar 2cm piece fresh root ginger, finely grated 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 tbsp olive oil 25g butter 125ml dry white wine or apple juice Method: Make several cuts into the fat of each chop to help it crisp. Toss together the plums, sugar, ginger and garlic. Heat the oil and a third of the butter in a frying pan on a medium heat. Allow the butter to foam, then add the

chops and cook for 5–6 minutes on each side until golden.

Add the plums and any juices to the pan and cook for 2–3 minutes until the plums are soft and the chops are nicely browned and cooked through with no pink meat.

Leave half the plums in the pan. Place the rest with the chops on a warmed plate and cover to keep warm. Add the wine or apple juice to the pan and bring to the boil, stirring. Simmer for 4 minutes to reduce by half.

Turn off the heat, add the remaining butter and stir until melted.

Serve the warm chops with the sticky plums and their sauce on a bed of steamed green beans.

ROASTED PLUMS & ICE CREAM Makes: 6 Ingredients: 1 orange, juice 1 vanilla pod or 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 3 star anise 6 plums, halved 3 tbsp demerara sugar 500ml tub vanilla ice cream Method: Preheat the oven to 200˚C, gas mark 6. Put the orange juice and 100ml water in the base of a small roasting tin (you want the plums to fit snugly).

If using a vanilla pod, scrape out the vanilla seeds and add to the liquid along with the pod (otherwise just add the vanilla bean paste) and the star anise. Arrange the plums, cut-side up, on top, then scatter over the sugar.

Roast for about 45 minutes (timings may vary depending on the ripeness of the plums) until just soft and yielding.

Baste the plums in the juices every 10-15 minutes and add a splash more water if the juices dry out at any point.

Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then serve with vanilla ice cream. For added crunch, scatter over a handful of toasted flaked almonds before serving.

Nordic design uses wood not only for flooring but also for cladding walls and even ceilings to add both warmth and texture. If it’s all too much, then consider incorporating other materials such as stone or brick in white, grey or neutral tones.

Wall-to-wall carpets are uncommon in Scandinavia.

Flooring is typically hard wood in its natural colour or painted white, soften with layered textured rugs. The only exception are bathrooms which often have heated tiles for practicality during the cold winter.

Lights

With as little as seven hours of daylight in winter, lighting is paramount. The style is typically modern/industrial - think metal pendant lights (single or cluster) and wall lamps. Candlelight is also crucial, adding a touch of whimsicality to the space.

PLAY As adults we turn to magazines or Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration - to learn from, and to inform, our wardrobes, homes and gardens. Inspiration is the bedrock for children to successfully learn too, says Rose McInnes, Reception class teacher at Grace Dieu Manor School.

Here she gives her advice on how inspiration should be the starting point for your child’s learning.

PLAY

Albert Einstein is purported to have said that “play is the highest form of research”. While we all know that children develop and learn through play, this is all too often squeezed out of a child’s life when they join school and have to conform to requirements of the curriculum.

‘Objective led learning’ coupled with ‘guided play’, is an increasingly popular approach in Early Years’ education, encouraging children to learn, by planning activities and lessons around their interests. Although some activities do, of course need structure - such as Phonics or Swimming - children can learn and quickly develop their potential in writing, maths and other subjects all through guided play.

IDEAS

Children can quickly develop a love of writing if it’s not presented as a chore or a skill to be accomplished. The key is to inspire them to write about the things that really interest them – so they choose to pick up a pencil to write. For example, we have a fairy who lives in our school forest, who everyday asks the children questions and loves getting their responses!

Could you have a fairy, sprite or friendly ogre at the bottom of your garden who your child could write to?

A great way to encourage children to learn spellings is to, again, not give them a list of words to learn, but to get them to thread word beads onto a necklace – a fun challenge that also encourages their dexterity!

Maths can really be brought to life, rather than just on activity sheets or iPads. Inspire them to learn subtraction by moving frogs on to different lily pads and introduce the

concept of division by sharing food between monsters!

SPACES

A space that inspires children is critical. Again, Einstein is quoted as saying, “I never teach my pupils, I only provide the conditions in which they can learn.” Making your child’s environment a creative space that supports their learning through their interests, rather than being prescriptive, is key. For example, instead of having a castle for children to play with, encourage them to make their own castle - from cardboard boxes or play bricks. They may choose to build a farmyard or a space station instead.

Why limit their imaginations by the ‘toys’ you give them – open their minds to think and express themselves creatively – while at the same time they are developing dexterity and learning how to successfully build structures!

When F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in 1941 that “there are no second acts in American lives”, it was impossible for him to know that over three quarters of a century later, a California-born actress by the name of Kristen Stewart would be endeavouring to prove him utterly and hopelessly wrong.

That being said, Stewart’s second act is coming a lot sooner than most, with the star still a year shy of her thirtieth in spite of her seeming ubiquitous presence in Hollywood over the past decade.

What Stewart lacks in years, however, she more than makes up for in experience, having been catapulted into the public eye aged just eighteen opposite Robert Pattinson as the face of the Twilight franchise.

“When I was young, many of my friends told me: ‘Come on, relax.

Just go out there and give the public and the press what they want,’” she recalls. “But I can't.

And that's terrifying.

I know a lot of people who are so good at interviews and giving the impression of being cool and charming. But they are so predictable. They say what is expected of them at every moment. Everyone loves them.

And it's ironic, because often what they appear to be, and what they say, is not true.”

Stewart’s rise to becoming Hollywood’s highest paid actress in 2010 only served to mask her uncomfortable relationship with the more public aspects of fame – a fact compounded by her highprofile relationship with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson.

"I have discovered that I am very happy to be older," she nods.

"Years ago, I was in a difficult place in my life where I felt

overwhelmed, to the point of not knowing who I was or with whom I wanted to share my time.”

And even though the pair’s fairy-tale relationship ended in acrimonious circumstances, Stewart has of late been writing her own career fairy-tale, becoming the first non-European actress to win a prodigious Cesar Award for her stunning turn in 2015’s Clouds of Sils Maria, debuted as a director with short film Come Swim, and most recently appeared as Francophile US actress Jean Seberg in an eponymous biopic.

"I tried to be myself working on this film," Stewart said. "Just like Jean Seberg, I feel the same desire to be accepted as I am. I'm proud of who I am, I'm less insecure, and I'm not afraid to express my ideas, even political ones...I'm not intimidated by celebrity anymore, today I feel ready for all of it.”

The more insightful onlookers could have gleaned that this side of Stewart was there all along – undoubtedly a far rougher diamond, and sometimes full of mistakes, but still able to come out publicly in 2017 in what is arguably the most public of forums in America, Saturday Night Live.

“I've felt a responsibility to not be this fake thing who's only putting out what people want to hear but at the same time not wanting to leak details about my private life,” she explains. “I was in the situation where hiding the fact

that you're with a girl is different from hiding your being with a particular guy and that's why I decided to say it openly.”

And now, more so than ever, Stewart is feeling a responsibility to speak up and use her platform – even going so far as to mould a new relationship for herself with a once hostile media.

“There’s this really sort of polarised climate that we’re living in right now, so it’s not hard for me to wear my politics,” she smiles. “It shows up in the work that I do, and the people I associate myself with and the conversations that I have with individual journalists, day in and day out. I like that interaction. I’m so lucky to have it.”

Fortunately for Stewart, modern Hollywood post #MeToo, with its current drive for female-led stories of worth, appears to be the perfect place for her to thrive. So much so, that later this year she will once again dip her toes into the world of mainstream cinema with a starring role alongside Naomi Harris, British newcomer Ella Balinska, and Elizabeth Banks in the reboot of Charlie’s Angels.

Most of all, Stewart has been able to escape the noise, return to her roots, and rediscover the passion for her craft.

“I love acting,” she says. “I have a strong relationship with my mother, a woman who loves cinema, who has always given me lots of books to read and advice.

I grew up in the movie business and I spent a lot of my childhood on film sets. I always liked the energy of the set and one day, to my great astonishment, I discovered that acting was what I really wanted to do.”

OK, I know this one is pretty obvious. By this time of year, you’ve probably heard all about your friends’ summer holidays and whether they’d go there again.

They’ve experienced a particular resort or hotel first-hand so can tell you what they loved (or hated). The best thing about asking a friend is that they probably have similar tastes to you. You can get the lowdown on the food and whether the kids club is best avoided. Of course, it’s even better when you know your friend’s pet hates. If your germ phobic mate thinks the accommodation was lovely and clean it’s obviously going to be spotless.

You might think that a travel agent is only interested in selling you something. Well, clearly that’s part of it. They wouldn’t have much of a business otherwise. The truth is that a good travel agent wants you to have a great holiday. Even if you go to the same place every year, they want you to enjoy yourself and feel looked after. Their services really come into their own if you need a bit of help with your holiday.

That could be because you’re after something complicated that you can’t easily book online. It’s also perfect if you need some new ideas.

The great thing about travel agents is that they, well, travel. They want to learn about new places and discover what’s changed in existing resorts. You can tell them about the kind of holiday you want, and they can suggest new destinations that will hit the spot.

Check your bucket list A few years ago, I was in the mood for a solo adventure but needed some inspiration. I knew the kind of holiday I was after but didn’t know where to go. As I’m the kind of person who spends a fortune in book shops, I already had a shelf full of travel guides, including one suggesting a thousand places to see before you die. I can’t remember how much of it I read before discovering that Argentina had great wine, waterfalls, horse riding and glacier trekking. It’s still one of my most memorable trips.

If you have a bucket list (or even one thing that you’d love to try) it can be a great way of finding holiday inspiration. Read some travel guides or Google the best places to find the experience you want. You might even be able to combine a few of your favourite things in one holiday.

Alicia Taylor “I enjoy helping clients create their dream bathroom and it’s amazing to receive such positive feedback”, says Alicia Taylor, Director at SJA Taylor.

I was born in Spondon in Derby and raised by my Father along with my two elder sisters Emma and Donna and younger brother Josh. I attended local schools in Derby, before leaving to undertake a diploma in graphic design at Derby College.

After college, I moved to Leicester to be with the rest of my family who had relocated there from Derby. I’d enjoyed my college years and wanted to follow a career in design, but at 18 years old I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. I decided to sign up to an employment agency as an interim measure and was offered an interview at NatWest Bank, in their processing centre. I took the job as a stop gap while I thought about what I wanted to do next, but ended up staying for 15 years!

Over the years I worked in several different departments, from processing customer requests and handling complaints to managing teams, departments and managerial staff. During this time, I never lost my passion for design and also discovered a love for interiors. So, while working at NatWest I decided to undertake an open learning course on interior

design. I loved it but did find juggling a full-time job and studying quite challenging at times.

In 2015, I met my husband Sam. We married in 2016 and decided to start a family. While on maternity leave in 2017 with my son Theo, the opportunity arose to take voluntary redundancy. We decided to grab it, as this would enable us to focus both on our family life and business. Sam had started SJA Taylor Plumbing & Heating in 2001 and the business was growing. Now was the perfect time for me to join the business and take responsibility for the office management side of things, while still having the flexibility to be there for my family. This was especially important when in 2018, our family grew again with the birth of our second son Ollie.

It was a full-on 4 years!

At SJA Taylor we offer a wide range of plumbing and heating services, but we have a particular interest in larger or heritage properties that require a trustworthy team to take care of design, installation and maintenance.

My role has changed over time, and beyond the office management requirements, I have returned to my

great love and now also design bathrooms. I enjoy helping clients create their dream bathroom and it’s amazing to receive such positive feedback. It makes all the difference, especially when it’s your own business.

It can be challenging managing a good life work balance and sometimes it’s difficult to switch off from the inevitable ‘shop-talk’. But I do think it’s important to have time as a couple outside the workspace, so Sam and I have a date night once a week. Time just for us. And when I’m not working, or spending time with the boys, I indulge my creativity with renovations to our Grade II listed house. It’s definitely a project!

What next? In the future, I’d love to expand the interior design side of the business. Watch this space.
