WARM UP
GLAMOUR GIRL
Pamella Roland
Give those tired beach waves a holiday with this glamorous combed-out variation of the classic barrel curl. Use a ghd Curve Creative Curl Wand, then gently run your fingers through your hair for a smooth frizz-free curl. This style has next day benefits too. Simply sweep back your curls into a hair band for a completely different look.
S RULE THE WAVE
Opt for warmer colours to compliment the change in the season. Caramel, honey and butterscotch blondes are all on trend. And good news, ‘balayage’ and other painting techniques are here to stay. Try ‘strobing’ a technique where a darker, medium and light colour are used to create movement in the hair.
Desigual
Pamella Roland
One of this season’s most sought after hair styles, is the ‘flat wave’. It’s a quick and easy look to recreate and you’ll be sure to make a statement. Simply use your straighteners to add a smooth bend to sections of your hair. Then use a spray wax or constructing spray to texturise the look a little more.
RED ALERT Stand out this season in vibrant shades of coppery reds and crimson. It's easy to transition brunettes to this colour if you’re looking to brighten up this autumn. For blondes, rose-gold and rose-blonde hues (think pink rather than red) can be simply applied as toners to summer sun bleached hair for an on-trend look.
Tadashi Shoji
SHE BANGS Whether you have long hair, a bob, smooth straight or wavy hair, it doesn’t really matter, there’s a fringe for everyone. Fringes can be full, rounded, blunt, choppy or thinned to create a look perfect for your face shape and hair style. The fringe is barely 10% of the cut, but it can dramatically change your overall look. URBAN FOX SEPTEMBER 2017 21

BEAT
THE BLUES
If your suitcase wasn’t the only thing that gained weight this summer, don’t give in to those post-holiday blues. Rebecca Watts from TheStudios40, reveals how to get focussed, get motivated and get results. Here’s my top tips to beat that postsummer slump and lose those excess lbs…
Drink lots of water
Water may seem like the answer to everything, but it almost always is. Virtually everything we do on holiday contributes to dehydration - sunbathing, activity in the heat, flying, drinking alcohol, eating salty foods. Dehydration will contribute to jet lag, tiredness, lack of focus and motivation, so if you’re going to fight the post-holiday slump start drinking 2-3 litres of water a day now.
Get some fresh air
How often have you got off the plane, moaned about the cold, got home and locked yourself away under a blanket? It’s time to embrace the British weather! It may not be tropical but it’s not winter yet. We still have beautiful sunny mornings and stunning green countryside, so make the most of it. Get outside, go for a walk, take in the fresh air, and top up your vitamin D store while you still can.
Eat your fruit and veg
Ensure that you include plenty of
fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet to nourish and help the body to recover from your holiday. They’re packed with antioxidants which protect your body from damage caused by free radicals from life and environment stresses, even on holiday - sun damage, overindulging and jet lag. They’ll also help tackle the post-holiday blues.
Take a probiotic
Probiotics are most commonly known for helping with digestion and gut related problems, but they’re also being linked to the brain, moods and many other health considerations. Taking a probiotic will not only ease any dicky tummies from the holiday food and drink, it will also help to improve mood and focus. Look for a higher CFU count. A daily dose of 5-10 billion bacteria is adequate for most people, or a higher count for specific ailments such as IBS. Finally only buy probiotics with a ‘use by’ date.
Make healthier choices
Apart from fruit and veg, try to make other healthier food choices. I know this is easier said than done, as there’s nothing more comforting
Boden
when you are feeling low than turning to chocolate or a takeaway. However, eating processed, sugary foods only exacerbates low moods. By breaking the cycle and eating more healthily for a couple of days, you’ll soon notice your mood improving.
Avoid artificial stimulants
It’s easy to believe that stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, will give us a much needed boost of energy, or help to lift our mood. However the ‘high’ received through stimulants is very short lived, and is usually followed by an inevitable ‘crash’. By avoiding or minimising stimulants, you will recover from your post-holiday blues much faster.
Keep active
Exercise is fantastic for both the body and brain, so as soon as you’re back from your holiday, quickly get into the habit of being active. From a session in the gym or exercise class after work, to 20 lengths of the pool, or a jog around the park at lunchtime, those ‘happy hormones’ will soon kick in, making it easier to focus, be motivated and get yourself back on track. FALL
IN LOVE ...WITH AUTUMN So here we are knocking on autumn’s door again. Long-awaited holidays become memories, our feel-good friend ‘daylight’ slowly abandons us and the BBQ is ostracised for another year. But hold on a cotton-picking minute; get up, dust yourself down, we have loads to look forward to, explains Sarah Mettrick.
over thread veins and cellulite, hell you can plait your pubes if you want to! Obviously we take pride in our bodies all year round (that bit’s if hubby is reading over your shoulder); just saying ladies, the pressure is off!
1
Movie nights are not the same during the summer - the light nights beckon us off the sofa and make us feel guilty for not lapping the block. Now it’s time for nights in. Batten down the hatches, grab a blanket and snuggle up. Cosy, cosy, cosy.
Trackie bottoms. Need I say more? The time for comfort house-wear is upon us. As for the bra - well who among us doesn't unclip that bad boy and pull it off through an arm hole? The full release early evening - it’s the way forward.
9
Glorious smells! If our noses could choose a favourite season it would have to be autumn. Crisps leaves, crackling open fires, scented candles, cold fresh mornings, cinnamon and nutmeg. Inhale it all in my friends.
You don't have to take the kids camping for at least another eight months. Hallelujah, praise the lord.

Here’s 10 ways to embrace the season… No more G & T’s in the evening sun? I feel your pain but try a good glass of red by the fire.
One pot dishes are back on the menu! No endless cooking and preparing, just shove it all in and cook slowly all day for a healthy hearty meal. I love a casserole, my kids don't but they don't get a say. Down the hatch. No more weather obsessing. We all go a bit Michael Fish in the summer checking the weather app on our phones every five minutes. Oh the

We all love a summer picnic, lying in the meadow chewing a daisy but I’m also a big fan of the carpet picnic. Lay down the rug, lay out the food, pour the bubbles, put on some tunes and heh presto! The rain is no pain and no pesky wasps.

LIFE OF
RILEY With a lineage steeped in showbiz royalty – not to mention a raft of roles in acclaimed projects – it’s no wonder that Steven Soderbergh’s NASCAR crime caper, Logan Lucky, has given Riley Keough the chance to move from the stands and into the driver’s seat.
LIFE & WORK
As the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley – herself the offspring of the one and only Elvis – it’s unsurprising that Riley Keough would somehow find herself in the weird and wonderful world of the entertainment industry. And though she eschewed the musical roots of her mother, grandfather and some-time stepfather Michael Jackson to instead pursue cinematic projects more in line with Lisa Marie’s third husband, Nicholas Cage, Keough has by all means managed to dodge the wellpublicised hazards that are often part and parcel of an upbringing in the spotlight. “I grew up in a very open environment and I was raised by eccentric people who gave me the freedom to choose my own path,” the 28-year-old explains. “I’ve always known that I could do what I wanted with my life and I’m very grateful for having had that feeling of freedom. Doing something artistic with my life was only natural, I think, because I was always exposed to music and art and culture.” Keough remembers being pursued by Michael Jackson fans, chasing after and screaming at their car – even camping outside their house. “It was probably a pretty intense experience, looking at it from the outside, but I never felt like I was living a strange life,” she shrugs. “I know it was different, but when you grow up with it you don’t really think about it. I didn’t know any other kind of world.” Though Keough was never inspired to take to the stage in the way her iconic ancestors had, her big break on-screen in Cherie Currie/Joan Jett biopic The Runaways was a project that effectively married both music and acting. Two years later, director Steven Soderbergh picked Keough to appear in his male-stripper hit Magic Mike, beginning a working relationship that saw the actress take centre stage in the TV adaptation of Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience and which continues now with the release of heist film Logan Lucky.
“Steven is such a genius,” Keough enthuses. “I’ve had an incredible time working with him over the years and I’m very proud that he keeps wanting to hire me. Anytime he calls, I’m ready. He’s very cool and sure of whatever he does. You can ask him any question and he will know the answer right away. I always feel very confident working with him even though I’m usually full of doubts when I start preparing for a role.”
Logan Lucky’s cast may also boast some of Hollywood’s biggest names, from Channing Tatum and Adam Driver to Daniel Craig, but the screwball blend of crime and comedy – set against the backdrop of the Charlotte Motor Speedway – has given Keough the opportunity to very much step out of the cinematic shadows. It could be argued that, in Hollywood, the hardest move is that which Keough has just completed – the shift from co-star to bona fide leading lady – but the actress is sure that opportunities like The Girlfriend Experience and Logan Lucky are also indicative of the modern industry. “I think I’m lucky in terms of starting to come up in the business at a time when women are being portrayed with greater depth and given more importance in the way stories are being told,” she agrees. “Working on The Girlfriend Experience was a great chance for me to build and live with a character and I was able to throw a lot of interesting elements into her.”With each passing year, it seems Keough’s stature on the silver screen grows. With four thrilling projects set to be released up to the end of next year, are we witnessing the actress’s assertion of her own unique identity, regardless of the pantheon of entertainment greats that make up the rest of the family tree? “It’s hard for me to say,” she muses. “I think at the beginning I had the feeling that everyone was watching me a little more closely because of the curiosity factor and seeing how I would behave
and how good an actress I would be. Now it’s like I can just go up for any role and my work will speak for itself. “I learnt a lot just by watching how my mother handled things. She never liked being the centre of attention and she always told me that it wasn’t a good thing in the end. I’ve never tried to play up to an image or try to be anything other than myself. Sometimes I can be stressed and annoyed by everything that goes on, but I’m trying to be more chilled!”
"I’ve never tried to play up to an image or try to be anything other than myself. Sometimes I can be stressed and annoyed by everything that goes on, but I’m trying to be more chilled!" And Keough’s undeniable evolution into a star reaching her zenith is compounded by her recent marriage to stuntman Ben Smith-Petersen, with whom she worked on the Academy Award-winning Mad Max: Fury Road. Now nearing her 30th birthday, she’s keen to enjoy this run of fantastic form before settling down – and, in spite of her all-American heritage, has even mooted a move half way around the world to her husband’s native Australia. “It’s still early to think about having kids because right now I’m getting a lot of opportunities to work and I want to focus on that,” she says. “But one day for sure. Ben’s an exceptional person, my best friend, and the man I hope to live with forever – I’m always looking forward to going back to Australia. Some of my best friends are from there and Ben and I have talked about buying a house there one day. It’s such a beautiful country.”

LIFE & WORK
GOING IT
ALONE Dread the thought of networking? You’re not alone. So we’ve put together our top 9 tips for making new contacts this autumn.
Here’s how to alleviate those first time nerves…
1
Don’t be late. As a first timer arriving early means that the room will be quieter, and others won't have settled into their usual cliques. Linger near the refreshments and approach someone who isn’t engaged in conversation yet.
2
Take your business cards and don’t leave them languishing in the bottom of your handbag, give them out. Offering a business card usually means you’ll get one in return. Write on the back of the card anything you’ve agreed to do for that person and follow up.
3
Make sure your hand shake is firm (and dry), and look the other person in the eye. And most importantly don’t forget to smile. You’ll instantly feel less nervous
and will come across as warm and inviting to others.
4 5
Don't skirt around the edges of the room, waiting for someone to approach you. This is no time for wallflowers. Simply walk up to a person or group, and say, “Can I join you?” or “What brings you here today?” Have your 'elevator' pitch ready. Prepare and practice a short, concise version you can share about what you do, where you work and who your clients are etc. Noone likes a waffler so give yourself a maximum of 60 seconds…but do remember to breathe.
6
Keep conversations light and informal. Even your elevator pitch should avoid the hard sell. That doesn’t mean you can’t be enthusiastic about your product or service and feel free to tell a memorable or entertaining work story which will leave a positive, lasting impression.
7
Remember to listen too. Asking people to share their ‘story’ is a great icebreaker and try to connect with people on more than a business
level; such as shared interests or mutual acquaintances. It really is a small world!
8
9
Change your mind-set. Many people approach networking from a “What can they do to help me?” perspective. However, successful networkers think about what they can do to help others. A contact, sales lead, advice, support, whatever you’ve got to offer. Log your contacts as soon as possible. Schedule 30 minutes the day after to follow up on contacts and add people to your address book and LinkedIn network. Record as much detail as possible as it’s easy to forget 2 months down the line who they are and what they do.
Still not convinced you can do it on your own? Remember no pain, no gain. Building any kind of relationship takes effort and you really can’t expect miracles overnight. Even if you don’t benefit from a connection right now, it’s still one more person you can reach out to in the future. BACK TO
WORK
Returning to work after having a baby can be daunting, with fear of how your child will settle into day-care topping the list of concerns. But as you explore the different options, it helps to go prepared, says Carla Brindley, Manager at The Nursery at Loughborough Endowed Schools. Going to nursery school is a milestone in both yours and your child’s life – so it’s natural to feel apprehensive. Quite apart from the fact that you may be reluctant to leave them when you return to work, you’ve probably also got a million questions swirling around in your mind, from what’s on the curriculum to pastoral care. Below are just a few considerations to make the process a little less nerve-wracking.
Qualifications
The Nursery
Knowing the people who care for your child hold relevant qualifications should go a long way in allaying your concerns. Most nursery schools insist on at least a Level 2 qualification in childcare and / or early years education, although there may still be volunteers or work experience students.
Of course, there are likely to be others at the nursery educated to a higher level, perhaps holding a degree or Level 3 diploma. Never be afraid to quiz managers about the team’s qualifications, particularly for those in a supervisory role.
Mealtimes
At home, you plan meals meticulously according to your child’s unique requirements, but when they go to nursery, how can you be sure they are getting the right nutrition? On top of that, what if they have an allergy or intolerance? Organisations such as the Children’s Food Trust have helped improve the standard of food in nursery schools, enabling staff to better understand the importance of portion size and food labels. When you visit any nursery, always ask to see examples of the menu and call in during a mealtime so you can see exactly how it works, particularly if your little one has an allergy or is a fussy eater!
Learning
Whether the nursery you pick is childled or academic, all Ofsted-registered providers follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS), as set out by the government. Broadly speaking, this covers everything from language and numeracy to arts and understanding the world.
Boden
Teaching should be geared towards next steps in a child’s development and so nurseries might have a sensory room for babies and another for toddlers to learn social skills and communication. Remember to ask the manager about the teacher-to-child ratio and how they track development and keep parents informed about progress.
Ofsted
All Ofsted reports are available online and while they can’t tell you everything, they do give you a good indication of standards. Go through the document and look at how highly the nursery scores in areas such as safeguarding and teaching, in line with the EYFS guidelines.
Visit
Qualifications and Ofsted inspections normally only tell half the story – you also need to spend time looking at how staff interact with children and whether they can engage them through storytelling, playtime and other activities. Be bold in asking about the nursery’s ethos and vision for the future and don’t just visit during pre-arranged taster days. Going along during ‘normal service’ will give you a better idea of how the nursery is run and, most importantly of all, how happy the children are. URBAN FOX SEPTEMBER 2017 41

NEW &
NOW
Every season sees new trends and must-have pieces that we just can't wait to get our hands on. Zoe Hubbard from Maison Interiors shares her predictions for AW17.
Geometric
Ceramic tiles are in. I predict an influx of geometric patterns with a strong vintage feel that can be used in a variety of applications. A punch of patterned tile is the perfect way to add interest and depth to any new space or renovation. Arthouse
Deconstructed Luxe
Exposed brickwork, cement and blown-plaster finishes, will be popular this season, combined with raw and natural materials, such as cork, wood, marble and clay. Burnished metallic and plush velvets will add luxury and glamour to this otherwise harsh industrial look.
John Lewis
Globalisation
Accessories will be luxurious and hand crafted. Expect to see North African and Indian influences featuring highly, implying travels to far flung places. Think Aztec handwoven rugs, Moroccan lighting, hammered urns and Safari inspired ornaments.
Maison Interiors
Bo-mance
Expect to see a palette of rich jewel tones combined with soft pastel hues. Think vibrant teal, purple and amber; teamed with blush pink, lilac and duck egg blue. This surprising contrast creates the perfect ‘bomantic’ (bohemian meets romantic) vibe, producing a sophisticated yet relaxed look. M&S
Art Deco M&S
This trend is never too far away. This autumn take the quintessential rich tones, luxe fabrics and quirky accessories and add hints of Hollywood glamour (sunburst mirror, glass trinket boxes, gold cocktail shaker and martini glasses) to create a grown up, cultured vibe. URBAN FOX SEPTEMBER 2017 47

ROOM HARD SELL?
Need more space but love your home? Then don’t move, improve. We look at 5 ways you can do more with what you have.
Listed your property but still no sign of a sale? Sam McDonald of Fothergill Wyatt, reveals what you can do to get things moving.
The local market in spring was very strong with lots of new listings going under offer quickly and prices creeping steadily northwards. But not all properties sell quickly; this can be down to a number of factors such as price, condition, seller position
and timing. Often a property has large viewing numbers that don’t result in any offers and on the flip side you sometimes get a property which might only get a single viewing in the first few weeks but this results in an acceptable offer. There really isn’t a fixed formula. So what can you do to improve the chances of your house selling quickly?
First impressions count
I’d recommend keeping your property looking fresh and clutter-free at all times. If viewings keep coming in, make sure your house is presented in the best possible condition. Keep on top of general maintenance and if a wall would benefit from a lick of paint, don’t hold off. First impressions count and if you’ve been on the market for a few weeks, treat every viewing like gold dust and show every room in its best light. Make the most of the season and flood rooms with light and fresh air while you still can.
Review the strategy
If after six weeks of marketing you’ve not received a satisfactory offer, or viewings are drying up, speak with your agent about their marketing strategy. Too often the agent will resort to a simple price reduction
discussion but ask them about re-ordering online photographs, taking new photographs in better conditions, listing as a “Premium” or “Feature” property on their portals and advertising outside of the normal portals. Not many people know that most portals provide detailed analysis of how the property is performing; this is something your agent should discuss with you.
Try someone new
Don’t be afraid of trying someone else. If you feel your agent is no longer working for you or has lost heart in your property, end your contract. Most local agents now work on a “no sale – no fee” basis so it won’t cost you to cancel their agreement and instruct an agent who you feel will go the extra mile to find you a buyer. Obviously if you’ve instructed an agent who charges their fee upfront; you’ll have a difficult decision to make as you won’t get this money back, but if the end result is a buyer for your house, than this is better than lost upfront costs. So don’t get the winter blues this autumn. Traditionally the property market remains buoyant throughout the season, so put in the prep work upfront and your house (and you) will be moving in no time.

ORDER Is your shed in need of a serious sort out? Turn chaos into order with these stylish and practical storage solutions.
1 Welly Rack
Free your shed from the clutter of wellies with an outdoor shoe rack, ideal for keeping all those muddy boots neat and tidy. Ensure the store you buy is both hardwearing and weatherproof, to keep your wellies looking stylish and protected.
2 Wall Unit
A wall mounted unit is the ultimate space saving solution for those items which always seem to get misplaced – garden string, seeds, herb markers etc. Pop them into labelled tins or plant pots to make them even easier to find.
3 Log Store
Real fires are great in the colder months, but logs can take up a lot of shed room. Keep yours tidy and away from the damp in a log
store. Choose one which is open with slatted sides, to allow air to flow through and keep the logs dry.
4 Shelf Ladder
Who says shelves are boring? A rustic wooden shelf ladder is the perfect way to store garden accessories and plant pots, or keep fledgling plants out of harm’s way. Both decorative and functional this is a stylish streamline solution.

5 Tool Rail
Tidy up those gardening tools by moving them off the floor and onto the wall. A wall-fitted tool rail, designed for both large and smaller tools, is a great way to minimise clutter, while keeping them accessible for those bright autumn days in the garden. URBAN FOX SEPTEMBER 2017 61

Top Hat
Arsenic & Old Lace
Sunset Boulevard
Winner of no less than 3 Laurence Olivier awards including Best New Musical, Top Hat brings the glamour of Hollywood’s golden age and the glorious, tap-dancing magic of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to the stage in one of the greatest dance musicals of all time. Based on the 1935 movie of the same name, Top Hat is packed full of Irving Berlin’s greatest hits including Cheek to Cheek, Let’s Face the Music & Dance and Puttin’ on the Ritz and tells the story of Broadway sensation Jerry Travers who dances his way across Europe to win the heart of society girl Dale Tremont. An uplifting and hilarious romantic comedy celebrating the very best of 1930s song, style and romance.
Mortimer Brewster is a drama critic trying to deal with his crazy homicidal family. There are two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic. There’s a mad brother who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt and a murderous brother who has received disastrous plastic surgery performed by an alcoholic accomplice, to conceal his identity. This tongue-in-cheek comedy thriller won’t necessarily keep you guessing who the killers are, but will leave you wondering how they’re going to get away with it.
One of the all-time great musicals, Sunset Boulevard is a compelling story of romance and obsession. In her mansion on Sunset Boulevard, faded, silent-screen goddess, Norma Desmond (Ria Jones), lives in a fantasy world. Impoverished screen writer, Joe Gillis (Danny Mac), on the run from debt collectors, stumbles into her reclusive world. Persuaded to work on Norma’s ‘masterpiece’, a film script that she believes will put her back in front of the cameras, he is seduced by her and her luxurious life-style. Joe becomes entrapped in a claustrophobic world until his love for another woman leads him to try and break free with dramatic consequences. Directed by Curve Artistic Director Nikolai Foster, and with its much-loved score (including Sunset Boulevard, With One Look, The Greatest Star of All and The Perfect Year) performed with full orchestra, this production promises to be spectacular.

Victoria & Abdul (PG)
humour and pathos film shot through with A supremely enjoyable
1hr 52mins Opens nationwide Fri 15 Sep 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org
Judi Dench stars as Queen Victoria in this new film based on the book by Shrabani Basu and the extraordinary true story of the monarch’s friendship with young Indian servant Abdul Karim. Sent to serve the Queen for her Golden Jubilee in 1887, young clerk Abdul Karim strikes up an unlikely relationship with the Empress of India herself. Opening Victoria up a world of culture from the reaches of her Empire the two grow closer; but Abdul’s increasingly elevated position in

her household causes jealousy amongst Victoria’s inner circle and the Royal family. The latest film from Leicester-born director Stephen Frears, Victoria & Abdul sits alongside his other prestige pictures The Queen and Florence Foster Jenkins, and sees him reuniting with Judi Dench after their tremendous Philomena. The film also feels like a continuation of Victoria’s story that began in the 1997 film Mrs Brown which saw Dench, again,
opposite Billy Connolly as her devoted ghillie John Brown. In Victoria & Abdul we find an aging Victoria, still reeling from the loss of Brown but also coming to terms with the constraints and sacrifices her long rule has demanded. Dench is on masterful form, imbuing the monarch with a steely determination and delivering some whip-smart putdowns with glee. A supremely enjoyable film shot through with humour and pathos, expect Judi Dench to be nominated for everything going come awards season.

AUTUMN
ADVENTURE We might be hoping for a late heatwave, but summer is officially over. The good news is that autumn doesn’t have to mean wet weather and boredom, says Kirsty France. There’s plenty of ways to keep that holiday feeling alive, even if you are doing it in boots and a jumper.
Here’s just a few ideas to get you started.
Discover your neighbourhood
If you have school age children the summer holidays can only mean one thing. Finding ways to keep them amused for six weeks. That could mean a family break, holiday clubs, local outings or a combination of all three. You might not be able to jet off on holiday once they’re back at school, but you can still have time together. You could revisit some of your summer activities or better still find new ones. Getting everyone out for a bike ride or a walk in the countryside is great for lifting
your spirits as the days get shorter, and it’s completely free! Plus you’ll be able to warm up in a country pub afterwards. Now that must be worth getting your coat on for!
Blow away the cobwebs
The idea of an autumn trip to the seaside might seem odd, but think again. A British beach holiday is likely to involve dodging rain showers whether it’s July or November. If you go in the autumn any sunshine you get will be a bonus. I love going to the seaside out of season. It’s particularly good at Christmas when you’ve had a few days of family togetherness and everyone’s getting on your nerves. You can all bundle into the car, drive for a couple of hours and get a blast of sea air and maybe even an ice cream. Do it in September and the arcades will still be open too. Anyone for air hockey?
Go in search of the sun
Sometimes you just need to get away for some guaranteed sunshine. Luckily there are plenty of places to choose from. If you have a week to spare, and children aren’t an issue,
take a short hop to the continent. Italy and Greece are both amazing in September. You could find a secluded beach or head to Venice for a romantic city break. I’ve also heard that Tblisi in Georgia has fabulous spas and delicious wine. I haven’t tried it myself so let me know if you do.
Getting everyone out for a bike ride or a walk in the countryside is great for lifting your spirits as the days get shorter. There are some equally wonderful places further afield. September and October are the best months for an African safari and New England looks fantastic in the autumn. Plus you get to start your trip with a weekend in New York – frankly it would be rude not to. And if you’ve never been to South America, go to Argentina. September is the start of spring so the weather is warm and you might even spot a few penguins. Whatever you decide to do this autumn, have a great time!

MY WAY
Julia Falk “I realised that outside London, there’s a big gap in the market for freshfood cafés and good coffee”, says Julia Falk, founder of Scandimania.
I was born in Linkoping, Sweden, and brought up in a small town called Åtvidaberg. I grew up in a house by the lake with my parents, 3 brothers and cats. I lived across the road from my best friend Amanda and together we got involved in all sorts of sports; everything from golf, ju-jitsu, dancing, horses and gymnastics. The school system in Sweden is a little different to the UK. I went to a Montessori pre-school / primary school and then to a local public school in the village before college. After college I went travelling for a couple of years and then started a textile course in a university, in the countryside, not far from where I grew up. I loved and still love textiles and I was mainly doing weaving, screen prints and sewing. However I decided after one year in textile school that what I really wanted to do was health and nutrition. I moved to the south of Sweden by the sea and did a degree in health education and nutrition. I was always very interested in healthy food and during my time at university

Tuscany, Italy or the Alps I have a passion for good coffee! got an internship providing nutritional advice for people with all sorts of eating disorders. I loved this role. To be able to help people through their diet for me was the most amazing feeling. After the internship, I moved to Worcester to do an exchange at the university there. In Worcester I studied mainly nutrition modules since this was what I was most interested in. I was on my way back to Sweden again when I met my fiancé Josh in Worcester, and now here we are living and working together in Rutland! I’ve always wanted my own café, but was told that it’s “everyone’s dream” to do that. However, when I moved to England, I realised that outside London, there’s a big gap in the market for fresh-food cafes and good coffee. My daughter, Freja, was one when I decided it was time to go back to work. I’d been a Barista for a long time, so was looking for similar work. Then one day I walked past an empty shop in Uppingham and decided that I was going to do it for myself instead, and make the dream a reality. The concept of Scandimania is good coffee, home baked cakes, fresh sandwiches and toasts made the Scandi way, and super healthy freshly squeezed juices. There is no way

I’ve really enjoyed seeing how ready Uppingham was for this! And I see people I never, ever imagined drinking a green juice, ordering one. You can be very healthy in our café or you can also enjoy a cinnamon/cardamom bun. This balance is the best way of living! Josh and I do this business as a family, and the amount of time and effort we put into it, is hard sometimes when you’ve got a little one. But we only opened the café 5 months ago and we’re finding new ways to make life easier every day. What next? We’ll see how this first year goes and who knows by then, we may be ready to open up a new café somewhere else too!
