HEALTH & WELLBEING
Blues
Summer
time
Summertime is associated with sunshine, hot temperatures and feeling good but for some of us this time of year can be a real struggle, bringing feelings of sadness, irritability and an inability to cope with the increase in temperature. We asked Gillian Carter of Apple Counselling in Leicester to explain more about this seasonal phenomenon. Most people have heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a condition which makes some people feel depressed, usually occurring during the cold winter months, but did you know that about 10% of sufferers are affected during the Summer? This phenomenon “reverse SAD” has perplexed scientists specialising in the field of human psychology for years. Some suggest that the cause lies in the seasonal change from spring to summer, making some people who are prone to depression more receptive at this time. The Priory Group, provider of acute mental health services in Europe, stated that although the increased level of sunlight helped to combat depression by producing serotonin (the chemical that makes us feel good), it also brings a burst of energy which compels us to take action.
Whilst for most of us this is a positive thing, for those who are clinically depressed sadly can lead to negative actions. Others suggest that as a society we are under more pressure during the summer period, including financial pressure and pressure to look our best. Whatever the cause, recognising the symptoms of Summer SAD is the first step to treating it. Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder include: • Inability to cope with heat • Depression • Anxiety • Changes to appetite • Insomnia/ oversleeping • Feelings of hopelessness • Irritability • Loss of interest in activities • Difficulty concentrating • Social withdrawal
So if you recognise these symptoms, is there a cure for the summertime blues? Keep cool Sounds obvious but taking steps such as being aware of increasing temperature, opening windows, drinking plenty of water and taking a fan to work can really help. Exercise Taking regular exercise is healthy, will produce endorphins which make us feel good and also increase our general sense of wellbeing. Meditation / Yoga This type of relaxation has also been proven to be effective as it keeps our bodies feeling healthy and our minds calm. Food Nutritional choices can make a huge difference to your mood. Omega 3 fatty acids and B vitamins can increase
the body’s production of natural mood enhancing neurotransmitters. Foods containing the amino acid tryptophan can also improve mood. These include poultry, meat, fish, figs and milk. Conversely artificial sugars such as aspartane should be avoided as they depress serotonin levels. Pleasure Make regular time for yourself to do activities you enjoy. Research shows that planning activities including routine and pleasurable ones, raises our moods and successfully combats depression. Above all, if you feel you have any concerns about Summer SAD or any type of depression talk to your GP or a counsellor. There is plenty of support available to help you make the most of the summer!

This month Rebecca Watts, Coach at the Metabolic Weight Loss Clinic gives her summary on our Editor’s progress at the half way stage.
Martina’s journey over the last 3 months has been typical of anyone trying to lose weight with many obstacles thrown in the way, such as work stresses, moving home, small child, illness, & birthday celebrations but she has managed to consistently lose weight and size.
Martina results so far speak for themself not only has she lost 12lb, over 30cm in size across 7 measurement points, and
By not seeing herself as on a diet, but instead continuing to make healthy eating and activity part of her daily routines, Martina over the next 3 months will not only continue to see results and achieve her end goals but also maintain a healthy metabolic rate to help keep the weight off long-term with a healthy, realistic maintenance plan. Well done Martina!
NEXT TIME: Find out whether Martina continues to stay top of the class in our next issue, out September 2nd.
Image: Joanne Withers, Nine Photos
These events / circumstances are part of everyday life but the key that Martina has grasped is to not use them as excuses but to work on weight maintenance through the more difficult times and then push forward through the less difficult.
over 6% body fat, she has significantly improved her health. Martina’s increased lung capacity from 280 to 389 and resting heart rate from 78 to 64 both show a great improvement in her heart and lung health and her cholesterol has dropped from a slightly raised 5.37 to a healthy norm of 4.32.
‘‘
‘‘ “
Martina should be really proud of her results so far, she has taken on board everything I have said about not losing weight too quickly to maintain a healthy metabolism and is really starting to understand all the concepts of healthy eating for long term results.

LIFE & WORK
Rise of the
Stay-atHome Student With surging tuition fees and the impact of the recession on family finances, many UK students are following in the footsteps of students in continental Europe, Northern Ireland and Scotland where it is common to head to a local university. For some parents, having a stay-at-home student is the perfect solution, offering a university education at a fraction of the living costs - reduced accommodation, food, travel fees etc. Whilst the Government argues that money shouldn’t come into the decision as to where to study, the reality is that many post-graduates start their working lives with substantial debt. If you and your child are considering a stay-at-home option, here are a few tips to help smooth the transition from child to student.
1. Encourage them to be more independent
3. Reserve the right to say ‘No’
Cooking, washing and contributing to other household chores. They could also consider part-time employment or voluntary work. This is easily managed alongside their studies, can provide an element of financial independence and/or a positive entry on their CV.
If you’re not comfortable with them having a girlfriend/boyfriend stay over then make it clear. Given that they may have more than one sexual partner during their time at University, it’s not unreasonable to want to keep your breakfast table for family members only.
5. Encourage them to throw themselves into university life Staying at home can impede their ability to mix with other students. There are numerous clubs and societies they can join, which offer a great way to make friends with likeminded people.
Finally, whilst you might prefer them to come 2. Set the ground rules 4. Agree they’ll make a home after lectures for a financial contribution family meal, encourage They’d want to know if you them to stick around for weren’t coming home, so You’re not asking them a post-seminar drink. they should afford you the to pay the mortgage, but It’s important that they same courtesy. LIFE & WORK
Funding
Private Education R egardless of where you stand on the education debate private v public; for many parents funding a private education averaging at £6k-£10k per year, seems an enormous ask. Whilst some parents start saving for private school before their children are even born, many of us don’t think about school until our children are at least two years old. This month we look at ways in which you could you could make your dreams of private education a reality. Bursary A bursary is a financial award that enables pupils to attend schools who otherwise would not be able to afford the fees. It is means tested, so schools will want to know about all your financial circumstances - your take home salary, what property you own, what car you drive, what savings you have, could you borrow against your house, are there relatives who could help? So be prepared! Scholarship A scholarship is a financial award to a student who shows talent (music, sports, art) or ability in a particular academic subject. To apply for a
scholarship, students are usually invited to take part in an open exam or test, normally held in the academic year before admission. You might only get 10-20% off the fees, but you might be able to get a bursary on top.
Depending on the value of your property, you could borrow all of the money needed for fees Equity Funding An equity drawdown scheme is usually secured on your home, allowing you to borrow a pre-set amount and then draw from it as needed. E.g. you could borrow £30k against the value of your house and then draw £6k per year for the next five years to pay the school fees. The loan can be taken over a longer term (10-15 years) which helps spread the cost but does mean you’ll be repaying the loan long after your child has left secondary school.
Remortgaging If you have sufficient equity in your property, another option is to remortgage your home. Depending on the value of your property, you could borrow all of the money needed for fees. Parents who plan to pay the fees from future income - should ensure that they have life insurance and some type of health plan which will cover the payments if one parent dies or is unable to work. Other Costs Make sure you undertake a detailed budget forecast and allow a margin of error in case costs escalate. Also take into account any additional costs which you’ll have to meet. These may include uniform, bus fares, books, equipment, after-school clubs, educational trips and overseas school trips. Finally if you'd like to send your child to a private school, start by asking the schools directly about funding options. They will be your best source of information on scholarships, student loans, and other types of financial assistance. They can also provide you with a list of outside sources.

FILM Review Monsters University
Classification: U Showing: Fri 12th - Thu 25th Jul BOX OFFICE: 0116 242 2800 www.phoenix.org.uk
T
his prequel to the 2001 smash-hit Monsters Inc. is set during the college years of Mike and Sully, and it seems they have not always been best friends! Enrolled on the ‘Scarer Programme’ at Monsters University, Mike is jealous of Sully’s natural talent and the two develop a rivalry that gets them thrown off the programme. Their only hope is to work together to
win the end of year Team Scaring Competition! After the disappointment of Brave, there were suggestions that Pixar had gone off the rails and that their golden age was over. Monsters University may not be the complete turnaround that many crave (perhaps this will come with Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur in 2014), but it is a huge step towards the pathos, charm and
invention of their most beloved titles. Pixar have always understood that a good family film will appeal to both young and old, and the adults will identify with the bewilderment of University days and the classic campus characters,
whilst for the youngsters a gorgeously animated menagerie of monsters of every shape and colour awaits. A fun-filled family film with some real laugh out loud moments.

Over the course of six studio albums and countless sell-out live shows, Bublé has wowed audiences with his distinctive style which builds on the legacy of big band and swing music from the era of Frank Sinatra and co. The Canadian singer-songwriter and actor, having sold over seven million copies of his last Christmas album, he followed this up with To Be Loved - a record for which he wrote four of the songs, with the rest comprised of classic cover versions. The hit single from the album, It’s a Beautiful Day, which reached No. 10 in the UK Singles Chart, turns the love song on its head and celebrates the end of a relationship.
Bublé explains how he came up with this idea: “I just sit down at the piano and it just comes out. The first words that popped up in my mouth were ‘I don’t know why you thought that you could hold me when you couldn’t get by, by yourself ’. As I wrote it, I thought ‘This is a great concept. I’m not writing a love song - it’s like, you know what? You messed with me and I’m glad you’re gone!’ I played the song for my mother and sisters thinking they would say they didn’t like it but they loved it. Women relate to it and say ‘That’s about me and my ex-boyfriend’. So people are attracted to the song even though the message is not a positive one.” His distinctive style is very much set around one genre. This is quite
deliberate, he says, for one main reason: “I absolutely love it. I’ve tried to be cool and tell people I love cool music but nothing moves me like listening to Frank Sinatra. People ask me how I can go out and sing other people’s songs. I love it. I get to continue the legacy of guys I completely idolise. I get to be a small part of re-introducing it to generations of kids out there, all over the world.” Melody is the main driver in Bublé’s passion for music. “Everything I do and love to listen to is melodydriven,” he says. “I don’t listen to a lot of modern, groove-driven music. It’s fine if you want to go to a club and dance to it. For me it’s a nice beat but where’s the melody?”

ble “People ask me how I can go out and sing other people’s songs. I love it.” This is clear in his writing style too. “I can’t play the piano, but I write. I punch all these chords. Everything I do is pretty syncopated. I write melodies the same way a horn player would play. I’ll swing stuff. It’s weird - it’s very me. If I played my co-writer 10 songs by different writers, he could tell which one was me.” A man obviously very passionate about his music, he’s also committed to giving his fans what they want. “I really try to practise being in the moment and realising how lucky I am connecting with all those people,” he says, emphatically. “Who gets to throw a party for 20,000 people every night, and be the host? It’s very easy to get complacent but we have to remind ourselves that every night is
important. For everyone who comes it’s a big night. It might be your 80th show, but you’ve got to give it 100% every time.” Bublé recently found himself comparing notes with another hugely successful pop star - Robbie Williams. “It’s nice to talk to a guy who’s been in the position that I’m in,” he smiles. “Robbie stands on stage in front of people and has moments of doubting himself. I wake up some mornings and feel like the biggest fraud in the world - how long until they find out? “Robbie is a superstar, one of the world’s greatest entertainers. It was nice for me to talk to him about having kids - what is life like; can you have both; is there a balance and all
All smiles: Michael with wife Luisana Lopilato
that stuff? He propped me up and said ‘Mike, it’s the greatest thing that will ever happen to you. You can have both. You can be a good dad and be good with your business’.” With such an incredible career so far, Bublé has still got a long way to go. “Now I’m 37 and as I get older I start to become more aware of my mortality - we all do,” he notes. “I doubt I’ll ever look back and think I could have been bigger or worked harder. I just want to make sure that I’m a good husband and a good dad. That’s probably what will end up being most important to me.”

Summer Fruit
Infusions
This month’s recipes by Lucy Cufflin from Lucy’s Food.
With summer late this year, we are likely to be hit with a glut of fruits. As nice as they are to eat, this is also a great opportunity to turn them into a winter treat for yourself or even a Christmas present! Here are a few recipes and ideas but with homemade infusions you really are only limited by your own imagination.
Strawberry Gin or Vodka Liqueur n C lean and sterilise your jar by dipping in hot water then in the oven at 100 degrees for about 10 minutes. n Wash the strawberries and pack into the jar pricking the berries as you put them in. n Add caster sugar to come about 1/3 of the way up the jar and fill up with vodka or gin so that all fruit is covered. n Put the lid on and store in a dark place for 3-6 months. n Give the jar a shake every few days at the beginning to help the sugar dissolve.
Hints: n T ry adding a handful of caraway, fennel seeds, vanilla paste or lemon zest into the jar. n You can use any berries or red fruits in this recipe – you can even use plums – I like to freeze these first, defrost them and then strain them as it rids the mix of excess plum juice – try this with brandy. n Enjoy the boozy fruit with meringues and cream, Greek yoghurt or with crème brulée, and sample the strained liqueur over the coming months.
Berry vinegar n B uy a good quality white wine vinegar n Put the berries into wide topped jar till about ½ full and pour over the vinegar. n Seal and store in a cool place for up to 6 months. n Strain and re-bottle the vinegar in the now cleaned and sterilised vinegar bottle with which you started.
Hints: n T o make a delicious dressing for your winter salad, add mustard, vegetable oil and season with salt & pepper. n Try adding some peppercorns, coriander seeds, or a few lavender flowers for a different flavour.
Whichever infusion you choose, don’t forget to label what you make because once sealed and on the shelf you may forget exactly what is in which jar.
Gift Appeal Keep your old jam jars or bottles and look out for unusual jars, bottles and glassware that would give your gifts that extra homemade touch. Computers allow you to make great labels or simply make your own using recycled paper or card and tied up with ribbon or string; they can be the prettiest presents of all.

Biodynamics:
maximising your drinking pleasure
F
or those new to ‘Biodynamics’ it’s not a body-toning regime, but an organic method of farming which sees the growing process in terms of a whole host of interconnected elements - soil, plants, animals and the lunar cycle. That’s right, the theory is that the moon’s cycle influences all living things. With this in mind we asked Duncan Murray of Duncan Murray Wines in Market Harborough, just how biodynamics is relevant to wine production.
So does this effect when you should drink wine?
Duncan, what is a biodynamic calendar?
Is it not just hocus pocus?
The biodynamic calendar starts with the twelve constellations that constitute a year - think signs of the zodiac. The moon passes through one constellation every 28 days and as each constellation is linked with an element - earth, air, fire or water it affects different parts of the plant as the cycle runs through. For example: • earth affects the plant's roots - roots are nestled in the earth • water affects its leaves - leaves are full of water • air affects its flowers - the air carries a flower's perfume • fire affects its fruit - plants need warmth for fruit to ripen
Yes, based on this philosophy the best days to drink wine are ‘fruit’ and ‘flower’ days as these will be the optimum times for the expression of flavours and aromas. This isn't to say that you shouldn't drink wine on ‘leaf ’ and ‘root’ days; it's just about maximising your drinking pleasure. Just consider saving that special bottle of vintage Bordeaux until the calendar is in either ‘fruit’ or ‘flower.
If it is, there are plenty of independent wine merchants and a handful of supermarkets that pay close attention to the calendar and organise their tastings on ‘fruit days’. How can our readers find out more? Our suppliers also tell us that when they’ve tasted the same wine on a ‘fruit’ and ‘root’ day, the ‘fruit’ day experience has been better. That’s why we always organise our big Winter Wine Tasting on a ‘fruit’ day. This year it’s on Friday 15th November.
Maria and Matthias Thun have produced a handy little book called When wine tastes best: A biodynamic calendar for wine drinkers. It goes through the year day by day and tells you when you’re in a ‘flower’, ‘leaf ’, ‘root’ or ‘fruit’ period.
“...the best days to drink wine are ‘fruit’ and ‘flower’ days” 35

Tips from the
Potting Shed Q A
I’d like to plant something in my garden border to attract wildlife (butterflies, bees etc.) into the garden, but I’m not sure what to use. I’d prefer something low maintenance with a nice flower but what would you recommend?
A very topical question at the moment, given the current threats to our native bee population. Most flowering plants will attract wildlife to one degree or another, but there are obviously some species that stand out for there ability to coax bees and butterflies into the garden. Depending on the amount of space you have available, Buddleia (the Butterfly Bush) could be a particularly good choice. These shrubs are very hardy, will grow in most spots, and produce long, dense panicles of bright blue, purple or white flowers, which bees and butterflies love. Cutting

back hard in January/ February (when buds appear) will promote healthy new growth and prolific flowering throughout the summer. If space is restricted, you could try something like a Lavender or Salvia; both will grow in a smaller space and will produce spires of blue/purple flowers, with the added bonus that the leaves of both these plants are very fragrant and have culinary uses. Other plants to be considered include Rosemary, Privet, Euonymus and Photinia, all of which should be available from your local garden centre.
I have an orchard containing several fruit trees, including a Plum tree which is always loaded with fruit in August/September. A friend has told me to prune during the summer, is this correct?
A
Unlike apple and pears (which you prune in the winter when dormant) we prune ‘stone fruit’, such as Plums, in the summer months. The reason we do this is that during winter most plums are far more susceptible to ‘Silver Leaf ’, a fungal disease caused by ‘chondrostereum purpureum’, the spores of which are far more prolific during the winter months.
Symptoms tend to include a silvery hue on leaves, branches showing irregular dark staining and on older, dead branches, a bracket shaped fungus appears. These brackets tend to have a whitish/ woolly upper surface, and a purple/ brown lower surface. As there is no real cure for the disease, prevention is the best option; try to avoid any accidental wounds such as stakes rubbing on stems or opening up the bark with a strimmer! If you do spot any signs of the disease, remove and burn all contaminated branches.

Hottest Trend Hot tubs have gained huge popularity in the past few years, with more and more Britons digging up their flower beds to make way for luxury outdoor spas. If you're toying with the idea of buying one for your garden, there are a few things you should know before you jump in. We asked Andrew Wroot from Leicester specialists MySpaUk for their low down on what to consider when buying a hot tub.
Why do people buy hot tubs? All Hot Tubs are essentially hydrotherapy pools and the health benefits associated with using them range from general stress relief and relaxation to alleviating symptoms of arthritis and Type 2 diabetes. Hot Tubs are also great fun and popular for sharing with family and friends.

Location, Location, Location! Always important when considering a move and never more so whilst at university, the property should be close enough to both the university and other local amenities. Consider how easily your child will be able to get from campus to the town centre and whether there are good public transport links if staying further afield. It’s a good idea to view the property at different times of day, it may look fine during the day but does it
feel as safe after dark? Also think about the neighbours, discuss the pros and cons with your child about living in a quiet residential street or in a student (and likely more noisy) area and work out what’s best for them. Remember should your child face any issues, the university’s student accommodation office are always there to help; providing lists of local and trusted landlords and lettings agents and also offering advice on tenancy agreements if needed.

f you’ve been watching BBC Gardener’s World this summer, Monty Don’s advice for any garden lover at this time of year is to go out and get inspired by visiting other gardens. One of those inspirational opportunities close to home was the Hungarton Country Gardens event, held on 8-9 June 2013. This was the village’s 13th open gardens weekend since the first took place in 1988, over 25 years ago. This attractive East Leicestershire village was first recorded in the
Domesday Book and was originally owned by two nearby estates, Quenby and Baggrave. It was rebuilt as a model village for tenant farmers way back in the 1760’s by the then enlightened squire, Shuckburgh Ashby of Quenby Hall. This year’s Hungarton Country Gardens certainly provided inspirational garden ideas. Featuring gardens large and small, there’s always a welcoming, country cottage charm to the whole event. Cream teas, home-made cakes, jams and preserves, plants,

Over £13,000 was raised for Hungarton Charities, to be shared between the 13th century St John the Baptist Church, Hungarton Village Hall, Sports Club and Millennium Green.
n Saturday 27th April, the Woodburner Workshop in Lutterworth dedicated the official opening of their new showroom, to local charity Hope Against Cancer.
after the event owner Martin Sullivan said “We were very happy with the turnout and hope to do similar events in the future for both local and national charities. It’s good to give something back."
Live music was provided throughout the day including turns from the local choir and brass band. Also on offer were light refreshments, a raffle & competitions with all proceeds being donated to the charity.
The Hope Foundation was launched in 2002 to raise funds for research into the causes and treatment of cancer in Leicestershire and Rutland. It was founded by the late Allison Wilson CBE who discovered, after she was diagnosed with cancer in 1996, that the development of cancer care in Leicestershire and Rutland was hampered by lack of funding.
Those attending were also surprised by the tasteful conversion of the former Cavalier Public House into Woodburner’s charming new showroom. A total of £459.76 was raised on the day. Speaking

My home town is Melton Mowbray. My family had a local paint and wallpaper outlet and one of my earliest memories is checking out the paint colours on my Dad’s overalls when he came home from work. I took an interest in design for as long as I can remember. As a child I use to sit in people’s houses and redesign them in my head. I didn’t know at the time that not everyone did that! I went to work for the family business for a few months and left 6 years later! Initially I advised on colour schemes, then later I took a professional interior design course. In my experience homeowners want a wide variety of advice from a simple colour scheme, through to full designs. I still pride myself on helping people however small their budget. Do you have a favourite ‘Homes’ store? Currently it’s Maison Interiors in Oadby, great staff, great products and value for money
Name one of your favourite designers Terence Conran for bringing affordable contemporary designer furniture to the high street
Not long after setting up my company 12 years ago, I met Ann Maurice from Channel 5‘s The House Doctor property show. This was a new American concept of presenting your property for sale. I became her personal design consultant for projects and facilitated in creating property presentation courses for delegates to set up their own businesses across the UK and Europe. My break into television was totally out of the blue. I received an email from a production company looking for an Interior Designer for a new TV show, The Renovation Game, for Channel 4. They showed me the pilot and I was so excited. Working to a tight budget and time scale, hands on and creating a perfect home…it’s what I do anyway! One day during filming presenter Jonnie Irwin called me into a kitchen to film a piece to camera. Some of the floor boards were up and unbeknown to me the joiner and the plasterer were hiding under the floor boards and grabbed me by the ankles. I think my screams were heard all the way down the street - it was all being filmed; everyone was in on the joke. I will get my own back on them all in the next series! The past two years have been a whirl wind, so I would love to catch up with my “to do” list. I’m still developing my new website and plan to be a guest speaker at the Grand Designs show in Birmingham again this autumn too.
