This summer I love… Editor Martina Lenaghan shares her tries and buys for her holiday wardrobe
1
1 THE FULL ENGLISH
Full skirts are massive this season. Whether in pastel hues or bold neon shades, prints or patterns, the style is feminine, sophisticated and quintessentially English. With its fresh mix of summer white and vivid blooms, this Ted Baker skirt has instant holiday appeal. Muirin Floral Skirt, £139, Ted Baker
2
2 A FINE MESH
SS14 is all about translucent fabrics, clear plastics and mesh. For the 30+ this trend is best adopted via accessories and small splashes. This adorable tee in attention-grabbing coral, features a broderie pom pom design and mesh short sleeves. Spot Mesh Pom Pom T-shirt, £35, Oasis
3 ROCK THE BLOCK
3
If floral and prints aren’t your thing, then bright blocks of colour are the way forward. This trend is simple but oh-so chic. Go as bright as you dare, pairing two or more colours to create one sharp look. This structured leather tote makes a fabulous travel companion, with stacks of style and space. Reed Krakoff Boxer Tote, £980, net-a-porter.com
4
4 JUMP TO IT
Whether a relaxed summer playsuit or stylish evening jumpsuit, this unpretentious one-piece is your go-to garment of the season. Boasting a bold all-over print, flattering wrap and cinched waist, this Warehouse version is a perfect addition to any summer wardrobe. Broken Texture Playsuit, £48, Warehouse
5 LEADER OF THE PACK
Constantly en vogue, the modern classic biker is the ultimate transitional cover up. Steer away from black and opt for more neutral palettes. Alternatively change it up and ditch the leather for a lightweight alternative. I love this sport-luxe design in bright treetop green. Treetop Jacket, £160, Betty Barclay
5
6 HEAD OVER HEELS
6
For summer in the city or day through to night, the block heel is the must-have style of the season. This citrus sandal featuring toe strap, caged ankle detailing and gold trim, provides a contemporary finish to any holiday outfit. Carvela Kandle Sandals, £85, Kurt Geiger

Clarins Tonic Body Treatment Oil, £39 Let’s face it, we could all do with a little ‘toning’ from time to time and this is the perfect body oil to help you on your way! This is one of Clarins’ best selling products, containing 100% pure plant extracts including Rosemary, Mint and Geranium. With its gorgeous aroma and body smoothing effects I can see why this is a popular choice.
MAC Prep & Prime Skin, £20.50 This is a silicone based makeup primer that can visually diminish fine lines and pores. It will also blot away excess oil and even out skin tone. Worn under your makeup this will help your makeup blend more evenly, look better and last longer.

Restricted on space in your luggage or simply looking to maximise your beauty regime; professional makeup artist, Sheelagh Powell shares her must-have products for summer
Dr Jart+ BB Cream, £18 I recently tried this product when it arrived in my monthly ‘GlossyBox’. It boasts an SPF25 and the result is natural, fresh-looking skin. If you dislike wearing heavy foundations, this is the ideal solution. Apply with a foundation brush to achieve the best finish.
Nu Skin ageLOC Radiant Day Cream, £36 This is a lightweight cream perfect for daily use. With added SPF22 it’s ideal for the summer months. Apply every morning after cleansing, it absorbs into the skin easily and can be worn alone or with makeup on top.

reast augmentation involves placing implants in pockets created behind the breast. Implants can help those with naturally small breasts or women that have lost volume after childbirth. It can also be used to correct asymmetry and for reconstructing breasts post mastectomy. Following breast augmentation patients often report psychological benefits, including increased self-esteem, enjoying wearing new and fitted clothing, feeling more feminine and having a sense of body balance or proportion.
Implants
There is a wide variety of implants but your surgeon will select one that’s most suitable for you. Typically implants are made of an outer layer of silicone. They can be filled with silicone, salt water or both. The silicone used to fill the implant can be in the form of a liquid or gel ‘cohesive silicone’. Liquid silicone and saline implants give a softer, more natural feel, whereas cohesive silicone implants give a firmer feel and are available in more shapes. There has been much publicity about the safety of silicone implants and many studies have been carried out. But overall, there is no evidence to suggest that
A bikini diet might work for some body issues but no amount of healthy eating and exercise will make your breasts firmer or bigger. Mr Ali Jahan, Consultant Oncoplastic and Breast Surgeon at the Santé Clinic, explains how breast augmentation can help you look and feel body beautiful
women who have silicone implants are at a higher risk of contracting diseases such as cancer and arthritis.
Procedure
The operation is normally performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes around 90 minutes. The usual incision site is in the breast crease, to minimise visibility of the scar.
resolves. The results of a breast augmentation usually last for a long time but this can vary depending on an individual. Every surgical procedure has a risk of complications. So be sure to discuss these, plus any concerns or questions you might have with your surgeon during the early consultation stage.
Alternatively, the incision can be placed around the nipple or in the armpit. In thin patients where there is insufficient tissue covering, your surgeon may recommend placing the implant behind the pectoral muscle to minimise the risk of the implant showing through the skin. These options are routinely discussed with the patient before the operation.
Recovery
Patients typically go home the same day but everyone recovers at their own pace. Most women return to normal activities within 2-3 weeks. Depending on your job you should be able to return to work after the first week and be able to do a limited amount of activity, such as lifting young children, after 2 weeks. It usually takes a few weeks for your breasts to look and feel more natural whilst the post-operative swelling
Advancements
A new revolutionary technique called ‘lipo-augmentation’ involves using your own fat as an implant instead of silicone. As fat is your own tissue, your body accepts it without the reaction which can arise using silcone. The added benefit of this technique, is it removes unwanted fat from sites such as the tummy, thighs or buttocks too! URBAN FOX JUNE 2014 21

DAVINA TV presenter Davina McCall reveals her secrets to keeping fit and healthy and how she finally found body confidence
A
familiar face on our television screens for over a decade, Davina McCall’s fitness DVDs enjoy global distribution. Still recovering from her colossal feat in swimming, running and cycling from Edinburgh to London in aid of Sports Relief earlier this year, a chatty Davina reveals that actually, as a youngster, she didn’t harbour any sporting savoir-faire. An only child and raised by her grandparents, the Million Pound Drop presenter views her childhood as less active than those growing up with siblings to play with. She recalls long hours “playing Robin Hood” but took an early dislike to organised sport. “I had to leave ballet in the end because I couldn’t keep my tummy in and my bottom in at the same time. Every time the teacher said ‘can you put your tummy in?’ I would stick my bottom out. Ballet and I did not agree. And sport in general didn’t appeal – I found it all a bit pointless.” However indifferent, body size rarely factored in Davina’s early life. “In the sixties, models were thin, but nobody really tried to aspire to be like that. I look back and I was quite a chubby kid, but puppy fat didn’t bother me in the slightest!” Today, Davina continues to keep fad diets
out of her household, particularly with her daughters fast approaching their teens. Rather, her philosophy remains: ‘healthy, is, healthy does’. “You are what you are and as long as you eat a healthy diet and do some sport and exercise, it doesn’t really matter, everything will fall into place.” She’s said it before and she says it now: “I would never diet. If my clothes are feeling a bit tight I’ll just try to be sensible. That means less carbs in the evenings, and cutting out bread and butter. So take today, for example, I’ve had a sausage in a bun so tonight I’ll have a salad with warm broccoli and chicken. It’s all about balance.” A balanced diet may be beneficial, but keeping trim requires staying active. Whilst the queen of the DVD fitness regime may be permanently in shape, preparing for her Beyond Breaking Point challenge for Sports Relief involved increasing muscle mass – and that meant really upping the workload. Embarking upon weekly four-hour sessions, she’d also fit in a few hour-long workouts – along with the odd bike ride, of course… “It was a gruelling schedule but worth it. The sense of satisfaction from undertaking something like that really is
immense, and I’d recommend anyone to really go for a big goal.” This dedication to her body represents a sea change from her much documented struggled with drugs in her twenties, and at 46, Davina really seems a master of her own body. When we quizzed her on body likes and dislikes, we received an altogether refreshing response. “I’ve been asked that before, and I usually say I quite like my tummy, and my least favourite body parts are my bottom. But actually, I now that I don’t have a least favourite because I’m much more accepting of my body than I ever used to be.” In choosing to celebrate rather than berate, this body confidence has translated into a bold personal style. Davina quips that she often finds herself in the ‘Worst Dressed’ sections of magazines, and admittedly, though she looked radiant at the BAFTAs last month, she did find her chic dress targeted as a ‘wardrobe malfunction’; paparazzi flashes exposed her underwear beneath the thin black material. Not that Davina cares. Hardly a diva, she continues the tradition of cutting her own fringe, and confides “I’m much more comfortable in a cycling outfit.” She’s long thought that taste is subjective, and has the anecdote to
“ I’m much more accepting of my body than I ever used to be” prove it. “I’ve got this coat that looks like a big green lawn, and I love it. I’ve been panned whilst wearing it, but a journalist realised it was from Prada and then, all of a sudden, everyone liked it. I think that sums it all up perfectly. At the end of
the day, you’ve just got to go with what makes you happy – you’re the only person who matters. For me, happiness is feeling good about myself, and that means being fit, and I think that’s going to be the case for most people.” URBAN FOX JUNE 2014 23

BBQ
BBQ season is here, but before you ditch your dreams of wearing a bikini this summer, check out Rebecca Watts’ 8 simple rules on how to indulge in this great British tradition without blowing the diet
1
on’t try to calorie count. Just give yourself a meal off but D make healthy choices. Summer is short and one meal is not going to totally blow your pre-holiday diet.
2
alance your plate with grilled protein, fibre and good fats B to keep your blood sugars balanced and avoid overeating and energy dips. Try grilled chicken and roasted vegetables drizzled with olive oil.
3
void the usual processed sausages and burgers. If you A can’t BBQ without them, make your own burgers instead or pick up some quality sausages from a local butchers. Alternatively just opt for marinated grilled chicken, turkey or fish.
4
I t’s better to cut out the bread roll completely but if you have to have one, swap the white burger bun for a wholewheat version and only have one!
5
pt for marinating your meat rather than using lashings of O sauce. An easy way to flavour your meat is to make a spice rub. Jerk spice and olive oil rubbed onto chicken is a simple but tasty way to spice up your BBQ.
6
part from the mountain of coleslaw and a bowl of salad A leaves, vegetables are often what’s lacking at BBQs. Try to make vegetables two-thirds of your plate. If your BBQ has a griddle section, brush your favourite veg with a little oil and griddle them, or alternatively wrap in foil with garlic and herbs and cook on the BBQ. And don’t forget the trusty grilled corn on the cob. For something different, brush with coconut oil instead of butter.
7
I f you’re attending a friend’s BBQ and you’ve been asked to take something along, make sure your dish is a healthy one. That way you can build your meal around it in case everything else is unhealthy. Good options include prawns, chicken and vegetable skewers, or the quinoa salad included in last month’s edition of Urban Fox.
8
lcohol and BBQs generally go hand-in-hand but can A easily top up the calories and make you more tempted to select the unhealthy food options. Try to only have a couple of alcohol drinks and stick with white spirits and low calorie mixers. Be careful not to substitute alcohol with high calorie fruit juices, try sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon or lime instead. URBAN FOX JUNE 2014 25

film REVIEW Jersey Boys (15)
2hrs 14mins Fri 27 Jun - Thu 10 Jul at The Phoenix 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org.uk Based on the record-breaking Tony Award-winning musical of the same name, Jersey Boys tells the story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey, who came together to form the iconic group The Four Seasons. Overcoming gambling debts, family disasters and mafia threats, the group were responsible for some of the 60’s biggest hits including “Walk Like a Man” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)”, all instantly recognisable thanks to Frankie Valli’s trademark falsetto.
book REVIEW
Since 2008’s Gran Torino, it has been a period of relative quiet for director Clint Eastwood, with his last two films J. Edgar and Hereafter receiving an indifferent reaction from critics. Perhaps that’s why he has taken on this safer project, a film that aims to ride on the pedigree and audience of the smash-hit show. In Eastwood’s hands, Jersey Boys is
a solidly entertaining and at times triumphant feel-good rags-to-riches tale, but there’s a question over how well this very US-centric story of chasing the American Dream will resonate with audiences in the UK. That being said, with superb songs and a terrific cast including members of the Broadway show; like the Four Seasons themselves, Jersey Boys deserves a shot at success.

Nina Elliot is tired of her life. So one fateful day, she makes a brave decision: she’s going to leave it all behind and take a job deep in the English countryside. Ensconced at the Old Mill, she works as a researcher for author Dudley. With endless summer days stretching out ahead of her, Nina couldn’t be happier. But her quiet life is soon interrupted when the handsome Milton boys return home - for they plan to make sure this really is a summer to remember.
Summer reads! Which one will Summer at the Lake you pack? by Erica James. Published in paperback by Orion, £7.99
For Floriana, enchanting Lake Como is the place where the love of her life is getting married to another woman. And she’s been invited to the wedding. For Esme, it is where, she fell in love for the first time. Adam is in danger of burying himself entirely in his work after his girlfriend left him. Now it’s time for each of them to understand that the past is not only another country, it can also cast haunting shadows over everyone’s lives.
A Girl Called Summer
by Lucy Lord. Published in paperback by HarperCollins, £7.99
Bella and Andy have escaped the rat race for the sun-drenched island of Ibiza. But with a run-down house to make habitable and a distractingly gorgeous neighbour, is their island idyll all that it seems? Hollywood’s notorious Tamara is engaged to Tinseltown’s hottest leading man and it seems like she’s finally conquered her addictions, if not her bratty behaviour. Summer has always known Ibiza as home: a haven of hippies, yoga and healthy eating - and loneliness. In Bella, she’s found the friend she always needed and when Bella’s glamorous Hollywood friends come to visit, it looks like she might have found true love as well. URBAN FOX JUNE 2014 33

For colour blocking in its best form go for a dramatic shade on the wall(s). In addition to this colour, use just one other for your accessories such as cushions, vases and lighting. Keep your furniture simple and colour free, to provide a stunning contrast.
Match the unmatchable
Alternatively keep your walls white and have fun everywhere else! The more surprising the colour combination the better. Match the unmatchable; you’ll be surprised just how well it all gels together. Try blue, green, purple or yellow, pink and colbalt. These colour-ways work well in pastel tones too. For this option, keep your furniture styles similar but mix and match the fabric shades. Finally choose a contrasting colour for any window coverings and accessories.
Big is beautiful
With colour blocking it’s usually suggested to steer clear of pattern but if
you’re clever and don’t overdo it, pattern can look fantastic! Use a bold heavy pattern - stripes work well too - on just one area in the room E.g. the curtains, a rug or some cushions. Simple, minimal yet BIG is the key to getting this look right!
Top to bottom
When designing interiors we tend to concentrate on the walls and furniture and forget about two other great focal points, namely the floor and ceiling. So why not paint your ceiling a bright shade of blue and contrast with an orange rug. This also works well with green and pink or red.
Do it yourself
Brighten up any dated items with a lick of paint. It’s unbelievable the difference just one brightly coloured piece of occasional furniture can do to a room. For the biggest impact use contrasting colours. Paint the carcass of a set of drawers purple and then each drawer a different
colour such as yellow, orange and blue or why not create a talking point by making your dining chairs all different colours.
Nice and easy
Need to brighten your living space but don’t want to go the full distance with colour blocking? Try the concept but on a much smaller scale, using scatter cushions, wall art, ornaments etc. Build your confidence gradually by adding colourful items here and there and before you know it, you’ll be painting a wall in bright yellow! On the
Surface
Want to create a wow factor in your kitchen without changing the cabinets? Frances James, designer at Plug Interiors blows the lid on 2014’s hottest countertops
I
f your kitchen needs brightening up, opt for a reflective work surface such as polished stone, glass or stainless steel. Glass is becoming more commonly used for its hygienic, nonporous properties but also the choice of colour and creativity. Add a backlit glass splash-back for that instant wow factor! Mirror is another fantastic option. Tinted mirrors in grey or bronze can add an elegant touch while distressed or antiqued mirror can create a vintage twist. However, be mindful of protecting a glass work surface from scratches, and avoid abrasive cleaners. If space allows, combining two finishes and textures creates a warm, homely touch. Solid wood is a beautiful, natural material and can help combine the kitchen and living areas. Consider other wood finishes around the kitchen; it is better to contrast completely than try to match. Solid wood can also be treated in various ways with oils or sandblasting techniques to give incredibly unique results. Don’t be put off by the maintenance factor, a light sand and reoil every 6-18 months will keep your solid wood work surface looking as beautiful as day one. If your kitchen budget can’t quite stretch to solid wood, laminate work surfaces have really come a long way over the past few years. In a contemporary setting, opt for a square edge, chunky thickness. With a huge variety of finishes on offer, there is something to suit all looks.
In a more traditional setting, stone work tops are still the most popular option. Composite work surfaces offer anything ranging from plain flat colours to granite/marble effect slabs and are less porous than natural granite and marble, with better heat and scratch resistant properties. If your kitchen is a busy, bustling environment and cooking is your passion, a recently launched work surface will fit the bill. Dekton is a new man-made compact material which has some impressive properties. You can chop on it, place hot pans on it and even pour red wine on it - if you wish - and it will not suffer any damage. If you want a truly seamless scheme, it can also be used as floor covering and wall cladding. Not just in the kitchen either, as Dekton is also suitable for bathroom and external use. Before you start designing your kitchen, think about the light available and if reflective surfaces are the best option. Consider any existing materials in the space and try to contrast not combine. Think about the look you are trying to achieve, whether you want the surfaces to be the feature point and what purpose they will fulfil. Always ask about the properties of the work surfaces to be reassured it will satisfy your requirements and have longevity. Finally why not try something new and exciting and be thrilled with the end result! Images: Pronorm, Plug Interiors

LIGHT
Do you feel like you’re living in the dark ages? Whether you’re looking to buy or sell this summer, or simply enjoy your home to its fullest, Peter Wyatt of local estate agents Fothergill Wyatt explains how creating light can help transform your living space
N
aturally I look at properties from the perspective of a valuer and there is nothing worse than a house which has dark, tight spaces; making the property feel confined, damp and unloved. Light can magically make a room feel larger, warmer and welcoming, and is one of the best way to alter the appearance of your home. Here are 5 great ideas on how to make the most of the natural light in your home: John Lewis

Amazing Glazing
This could be as simple as a table, or as major as a wall; the principle is the same. If light is obstructed it cannot travel to the depths of a room and will leave you with shadows and dark corners. You could swap your large wooden coffee table for a glass one, or remove the wall so the flow of light can move freely from one room to another. Always consult a structural engineer or builder before removing walls.
Positioning a mirror in a dim room, ideally opposite a window, will help distribute light as well as giving a feeling of extra space. Larger mirrors are typically the best way to reflect the most light into a room, however small mirrors can still brighten a space if they are placed in groupings. Consider placing a mirror collage on the wall to create a focal point, as well as brighten your room.
It may sound obvious, but decorating a room in darker tones will absorb light and make it feel gloomier. By contrast, lighter colours will reflect the light more evenly and give your room a natural glow. Some paint brands also offer specialist products containing light-reflective particles which are designed to make a room reflect twice as much light as ordinary emulsion.
The main purpose of curtains and blinds is to provide privacy rather than darkness. It is quite common to see partially drawn curtains or half-opened blinds obstructing light ingress. Opening these up to their fullest is the easiest way to allow the light to penetrate. If privacy is an issue then consider using more transparent fabrics such as voile and muslin which allow light to travel through.
For the Georgians, the number of windows a property had was viewed as a status symbol. In modern properties, glazing remains a stylistic feature but also serves to connect the property to the surrounding environment and make the most of the space. The current trend is to incorporate substantial glazing at the rear of the property, opening out to a garden or patio entertaining area. This creates a freedom of living and a sense of light and space. URBAN FOX JUNE 2014 43

So how do you work out the boundary?
even if this means demolishing the offending parts.
In establishing a boundary, the Title Deeds of the property will generally be the starting point. There may be a plan or a description in the deeds. If you do not have a copy, the deeds can often be obtained from the Land Registry.
What happens if the trespass has been going on for a while?
Why are boundaries important?
When do boundary issues arise?
Establishing the position of a boundary at a property determines the rights between property owners. A boundary is a line that divides two pieces of land. The boundary may be physical, which could be a natural boundary such as a hedge or river, or artificial, such as a wall or fence.
Issues can arise when a property is built, extended or developed, or a new fence or wall is built, or occupiers change, such as when a house is bought and sold. Building work can also give rise to issues of Rights of Light and the Party Wall Act.
However, a boundary will not necessarily be apparent on the ground and even a physical boundary, such as a fence or wall, may not follow exactly the same line as the legal boundary.
A boundary is not just important at ground level. In theory, a boundary to a property runs from the centre of the earth through to the sky above. This means that if, for example, a neighbour’s gutter overhung a boundary, this would be a trespass.
It is important to be sure that any building or any part of it does not cross a boundary: the remedy for a trespass is usually an injunction, which often means a trespassing building being removed from the neighbour’s land and airspace,
There are time limits that apply, and land can be lost if it is occupied by someone other than the owner for a lengthy period of time, usually over 10 years. The owner of the land which suffers the trespass should not wait too long in taking action to resolve matters, with the general right to bring a claim for trespass being six years.
What should I do if I am worried about a boundary at my property? Where a householder has a concern about a boundary, it is worthwhile taking advice because boundary disputes are often complex and uncertain as to their final outcome. The parties are frequently emotionally involved which makes resolving the problem more difficult. If the matter can be resolved with a friendly agreement with a neighbour, that is generally a better approach than a lengthy and potentially expensive court dispute. But inevitably sometimes, the law has to intervene to resolve this kind of dispute. URBAN FOX JUNE 2014 51

LIFE & WORK
Can’t stand the
HEAT
The warmer weather is something that we all look forward to, but for animals the heat can be unpleasant. Julie Howard of Best Friends Veterinary Group, tells us how by following these 12 simple safety tips, we can help keep our pets happy and healthy this summer
1
Move garden hutches and runs into shaded areas, or put a lightweight covering over them to provide shade. If indoors, ensure any cages, crates and hutches are out of the direct sunlight. Closing the curtains can also help pets to avoid direct sunlight and keep the temperature down.
2
Make water available to your pet both indoors and outside. Check the water sources throughout the day and top up as appropriate. Give your dog somewhere to get wet. Set up a paddling pool or sprinkler system that will enable them to keep cool.
3 4
If you give your dog a toy that you stuff with food, do it the night before with something moist and put in the freezer for a longer lasting, cooling treat. Leave windows open, fans going and air conditioning on inside. This is especially important if you are leaving pets alone for any period of time, such as when you go to work.
5
Apply sun block to areas where hair is thin, such as the tops of ears and noses. It is best to use products designed for children or sensitive skin. Always test the cream on a small area first and leave it for 24 hours to ensure your pet is not going to have an allergic reaction to it.
6 7
Clean out litter trays and bedding more frequently during the summer, as the increased heat can make them smell more pungent. Ensure your pet is protected against parasites to prevent infestation from fleas, ticks, mites and other nasties. Rabbits are included in this, with ‘fly strike’ being much more prevalent in hot weather.
8
Never leave your dog in the car. Though it may seem cool outside, the sun can raise the temperature inside the car in a matter of minutes, even with the windows down. If you need to run errands, leave your dog at home.
9
Try to avoid exercising dogs in the midday sun. Instead take them out in the early morning or late evening when the sun is weaker. If you need to walk your dog during the day, take them to a wooded or shaded area, where there is water so they’ll be cooler and protected.
10
Take water with you when exercising dogs away from home and try to limit the amount of vigorous exercise such as ball games. If they’re panting a lot or seems exhausted, it’s time to stop.
11
All dogs can overheat but if your dog has a thick or long coat it may become especially uncomfortable. Consider regular haircuts. Your vet or a professional dog groomer will be best placed to advise you.
12
Finally if you are concerned about how to take care of your pet in the warmer weather, speak to your vet who will be happy to answer your questions. URBAN FOX JUNE 2014 53

Check out: Stonehurst Family Farm and Tropical Birdland in Leicestershire or journey across the county border to Twycross Zoo.
Cultural Experience
Science Crazy
Theme parks offer a great day out during the holidays. Teenagers will love scaring themselves on hair-raising rides, but there’s also plenty of gentle fun for smaller children. Most offer indoor and covered attractions should the weather take a turn for the worst.
A lot of thought has gone into making heritage sites and museums childfriendly in recent years, with many venues running special events during the school holidays. Kids can learn about local or ancient history, art, palaeontology and archaeology in an array of exciting, relaxed and grand settings. Check out: Leicester’s New Walk and Newarke House Museums and Belvoir and Ashby Castles in Leicestershire.
Dunnes Stores
Once the school holidays start, keeping the kids entertained can be difficult. But with so many local events and attractions to explore, here’s everything you need to help pass the time If your kids are animal lovers there’s a range of activities open to you. From feeding lambs and horse-riding, to a trip to the zoo or safari park, there’s something to suit everyone. Some venues also provide outdoor and soft play areas for children to run off steam.
If you have a mini-Einstein on your hands, opt for an entertaining science-centred day out. Whether their interest is in outer space, transport or engineering there are lots of opportunities for them to learn, have fun and be interactive. Check out: The National Space Centre and Abbey Pumping Station in Leicester or Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville.
Outdoor Pursuits
Dunnes Stores
If the weather this summer is as good as predicted, entice the kids away from the TV and X-Box to enjoy the great outdoors. From nature trails and cycling to sailboarding, climbing and kayaking, they’re sure to come home exhausted but happy! Check out: Watermead Park and The Outdoor Pursuit Centre in Leicester, Rutland Water or Conkers in neighbouring Derbyshire.
Summer School
If you have to work and need childcare during the holidays, then send the kids back to school! Many venues now offer summer schools, academies and holiday camps providing an array of activities including music, drama, the creative arts, sports and science. Check out: Leicester Grammar School’s Academies and Uppingham School’s Summer School.
Back to Basics
Finally don’t feel that you have to entertain them 24/7. Allow time alone to watch the TV, play computer games and for younger children to engage in imagination play. As parents we often say that our happiest childhood memories relate to playing sports, having picnics and water fights and going on bike rides with our friends. So why not encourage these values in your children this summer and focus on low cost playdates and outdoor antics! URBAN FOX JUNE 2014 55

MY WAY
Adrienne Vaughan
Romantic novelist and PR professional, shares her passion for writing, as she pens her third novel in the Heartfelt trilogy My parents are from Dublin but came to England to work. They moved back to Ireland when I was 11. I was quite a good athlete at school and was proud to run for Ireland at the World School Games in Portugal. I won a place at the Dublin College of Journalism and after working on magazines there, decided the London scene really needed me - it didn’t - but I had a ball working on IPC Magazines’ teen titles. I met David Essex, the Bay City Rollers and one of my heroes, Marc Bolan to name just a few. I have always been interested in writing. I was given a turquoise Petite typewriter when I was seven and my fate was sealed! I wrote stories and articles and cut out pictures from magazines and newspapers and made up my own periodicals. Today, I write lots of different things. Some writing is for work – my day job is running a small PR practice in Leicestershire, AVA PR - and some for pleasure. My first published novel was ‘The Hollow Heart’ in 2012, followed a year later by ‘A Change of Heart’. Both novels form part of the ‘Heartfelt’ trilogy. I am currently writing the third book ‘Secrets of the Heart’. My readers describe my novels as a cross between Maeve Binchy and
Jackie Collins – I love that, both are super writers and hugely successful. My ideas for my novels come from everywhere, every minute, every day. I love adventure, action and romance, so my novels tend to be thrillers, with a love story at the heart of them. The women in my novels are feisty, zesty, colourful and very interesting, like most of my friends and the women in my family! When I’m not writing, I love to cook and entertain, I sing in a local choir and I’m learning to play the piano. I ride, walk my two English cocker spaniels, Winston and Wellington and I have a rescue cat called Agatha Christie …well, I need another female writer in the house for inspiration, don’t I?
Best fashion brand Being a local lass, Joules of course!
For anyone interested in writing, my advice is hook up with some supportive writer friends. For years I felt like I was getting nowhere, but then I joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association and met three likeminded writers. Together we formed our own independent publishing group, The New Romantics Press and collectively published our debut novels. It was an amazing experience. I have Winston Churchill’s quote, “Never, never, never give up”, stuck on my computer. I know I won’t! Favourite Leicestershire landmark De Montfort Hall
