W

hen asked to picture a figurehead of the British fashion design world, the vivacious fuchsia-haired Zandra Rhodes promptly comes to mind. So it’s a privilege to meet the ‘Princess of Punk’ in her bright, quirky and altogether penthouse. Awarded London fabulous a Commander of the British Empire for her efforts in the fashion industry, the designer has permanently printed of her mark on the international world textiles.

“One of my first struggles was the fact that I was a textile designer,” she explains if with a laugh. “People would say that you’re a textile designer then you can’t a make dresses. So I suppose that was revolution.”

Want to declutter your bedroom but not sure where to start? Check out these 9 inspired ideas to tackle your wardrobe.

1

Simply find 12 items to throw away, 12 items to donate, and 12 items to keep in your wardrobe. The ‘12-12-12 Challenge’ is a fun and exciting way to organise 36 things in your wardrobe quickly. Repeat the challenge as often as necessary.

2 P ut everything in a bin bag so your

wardrobe is completely bare. Then each day for 2 weeks, take out only what you want that day. This may sound extreme, but it’s a sure fire way to find out exactly what you need.

3 C reate 4 piles – wear, never worn,

not worn for 12 months, doesn’t fit. Put the things you wear back into your wardrobe and the rest into boxes in the loft. If you haven’t missed them in 3 months, they have to go!

4 A ttempt ‘Project 333’, the brainchild

of Courtney Carver, which challenges you to wear only 33 pieces of clothing for 3 months. If 33 items seems too little, pick a new number.

Just make sure it’s reasonable.

5 P lay the Evacuation Game! Simply

imagine you’ve been told to evacuate your home within an hour. Which items would you take and which would you leave behind? A great way to identify the pieces you really love.

6 I f possible push your clothes to the left of your wardrobe and then each time you wear something move it to the right. After a month or so you’ll visibly see which clothes you don’t wear.

7 I ntentionally choose to wear fewer

colours. That doesn’t mean your whole wardrobe has to be black, but less colours means fewer accessories.

What’s more the pieces you choose, will work together as a collection.

8 P lay ‘Hide & Seek’ with your partner.

You both take turns to hide something – a pair of shoes, coat etc. – and if they don’t notice it’s missing within 2 weeks then they obviously don’t need it.

9 E mbrace the idea of 1 i.e. 1 little black

dress, 1 pair of skinny jeans, 1 blazer, 1 pair of Uggs, 1 Mulberry bag. You can create your own list of 1’s depending on your occupation and lifestyle.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s something thrilling about colour-coding all the endless pots and tubes, but seriously my makeup collection was going on the rampage and seemed like such a waste of money, as I inevitably reached for the same products every day anyway. Like me, you too can take control of your cosmetics by following these essential tips for a clutter free, spring ready makeup bag.

If you have a product you love but it isn’t suitable for spring, pop it away in a drawer. When autumn comes, it will be like receiving a brand new product.

Empty the contents of your cosmetic carnage onto the table and discard crumbling compacts, cracked lids and sticky lip glosses, coated in fluff.

Next set aside your favourite items (they’re not going anywhere) and

Arrange a “makeup swap shop” with friends and take along your neglected makeup for someone else to love. Mascara only lasts six months and shouldn’t be swapped for hygiene reasons.

Remember! Only bring home items you really need.

Review what makeup you now have. If there are still some gaps, look to buy products that serve a dual purpose - lip and cheek colour - or compacts which contain multi products.

Start by using a specialist volume shampoo and conditioner to help build body. They work to swell the hair, giving the appearance of thicker, fuller hair.

Opt for a haircut that has soft layering around the areas that typically lay flat, as this will help with movement. Alternatively, graduating fine hair into a short bob shape will also lift flat, limp hair.

Apply a blow-dry spray to the roots, then dry the hair moving the roots from side to side and against the natural fall of the hair. Add your parting, then dry using a large, round, natural bristle brush.

It may be a cliché but what, when and how you eat, dramatically effects your health, how you feel, and your lifestyle, says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts The nutrients found in food, helps our body function properly. Each nutrient has a different purpose and a diet lacking in certain nutrients is likely to make body functions less efficient. These inefficiencies can have a remarkable impact, such as fluctuating energy levels, mood swings, weak immune system, skin outbreaks, sleepless nights, upset stomachs, premature ageing, headaches, weight loss and gain...the list is endless!

So this month’s challenge is to follow my 7 simple food rules and discover a healthy way to maintain or lose weight, as well as fuel your lifestyle.

1 Portion Control Eat a fist size portion of Protein with each meal.

Incorporate 2 thumbnail size helpings of Fat (oil or butter) into every meal.

Alternatively eat 2 thumb size servings of avocado, nuts, seeds or olives.

Include a palm size portion of Starchy Carbohydrates with each meal. Opt for whole wheat versions where possible. If you are trying to lose weight, have one meal a day without starchy carbs.

Ensure you eat 5 fist size portions of Vegetables per day.

Eat no more than 2 pieces of Fruit a day.

2 Eat Regularly

5 Ditch Takeaways

Never go longer than 4 hours without eating. This keeps your metabolism ticking, your digestive system healthy and your blood sugars balanced. Use healthy snacks of nuts, fruit, yoghurt and hummus in between meals.

A weekend takeaway can negate all your calorie deficits in that week. Takeaways and processed foods can also effect blood sugars and insulin response, so keep to a minimum. Eat fresh produce wherever possible to avoid hidden bad fats and sugars.

3 Drink Water

6 Treat Yourself

Drinking 2 or more litres of water a day, will keep you hydrated which helps all your body’s functions. Water also helps raise energy levels, makes you more alert and reportedly improves your skin and slows down the ageing process. Up to 80% of hunger pangs are thirst, so keep hydrated to avoid unhealthy snacking.

Also avoid fizzy drinks including diet versions.

It’s unrealistic to cut everything you like out of your diet, so build them into a healthy plan. Allow yourself a small weekly treat such as a bar of chocolate or a slice of cake, or a larger treat – bottle of wine - every two weeks. Don’t over reward yourself, as you’ll undo all the good work.

4 Reduce Stimulants Alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine are all stimulants which can affect the amount of nutrients our body uses from foods, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies. So quit smoking, avoid (or at least limit) alcohol and restrict caffeine to 1-2 cups per day.

7 Fuel Exercise Finally always ensure that you’re eating enough to fuel exercise. This will help avoid energy struggles, illness and plateaus. Even if you’re trying to lose weight, it is important to increase your consumption post exercise. A simple rule to remember is to eat additional protein after a resistance training workout and extra carbs post cardiovascular training.

Want to incorporate more fish into your diet but find it bland and uninspiring? This month Waitrose adds a little spice to our lives with these delicious Asian inspired salmon recipes. Cooked in 20 minutes or less, they make the perfect midweek supper

THAI RED SALMON CURRY

Ingredients:

Preparation time: 10 minutes

100g jar Thai red curry paste

Cooking time: 20 minutes

2 salmon fillets, skinned and cubed

Serves: 2

1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

½ x 20g pack fresh coriander, chopped ½ x bunch salad onions, thinly sliced ½ x 400ml can organic coconut milk

100g green beans, topped, tailed and halved 1 tbsp sunflower oil 100g Le Puy green lentils

Rinse the lentils and place in a mediumsized pan, generously covered with water.

Bring to the boil and simmer for 15–20 minutes until just tender.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a heavy-based pan and add the beans and pepper. Cook for 2 minutes, then add the salmon and stir together for 1 minute.

Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute. Add the coconut milk and simmer gently for 4–5 minutes until the salmon is cooked through. Add the drained lentils, then scatter with the sliced salad onions and coriander. Serve with steamed rice

TANDOORI SALMON WITH ROASTED TOMATOES AND CHIVE MASH Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1kg Maris Piper potatoes, peeled and cubed 3 tbsp tandoori curry paste 300g natural set yoghurt 4 boneless Scottish salmon fillets 400g pack cherry vine tomatoes 25g pack fresh chives, finely snipped 1 lemon, cut into wedges, to serve

Preheat the oven to 220˚C, gas mark 7. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling water for 10–12 minutes until tender, then drain well.

Meanwhile, mix together the tandoori paste and 100g of the yoghurt. Spread the mixture all over the salmon then place on a parchment lined baking sheet with the tomato vines. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the salmon is cooked through.

Mash the potatoes until smooth then beat in the remaining yoghurt and chives.

Divide between 4 plates and serve with the tandoori salmon, roasted tomatoes and lemon wedges.

Keeping on top of work, the kids and home is exhausting enough, so the idea of taking on an attic conversion, let alone a 33-room mansion restoration project – as did property developer and TV presenter, Sarah Beeny - is enough to make the best of us flinch!

The average Brit is now estimated to move eight times in a lifetime, and for most the demands of making it into somewhere new means the planned ‘sort out’ rarely materialises. “We’re accumulating ‘stuff’ more now than at any previous time,” begins Beeny, prolific property developer and presenter of era defining shows such as Property Ladder, Help! My House Is Falling Down and Double Your House For Half The Money.

“In recent years, I think some bits of technology have helped us begin to move things the other way – we don’t have huge CD collections anymore, and a lot of filing is taken care of on our computers, but most people reuse the space they save to accumulate other things!”

With Beeny’s father having sparked her interest in property – he made his money in the building trade as an architect – the 43-year-old’s status as a home expert is without question.

But does her expertise stretch as far as sorting out clutter? “Of course,” she laughs. “Unless you’re super-organised and live in an extremely contemporary way, the fact is we all have ‘stuff’.

Some of the best houses I’ve seen over the years are the ones that cleverly disguise possessions. I’ve seen hidden cupboards in staircases, mirrors that open up into wardrobes and even storage under the floor, but I think

first of all you have to be disciplined in yourself to only keep what you need. I know that’s easier said than done, and we’re all a bit sentimental when it comes to things that provoke memories, but it really has to start with the person.”

Beeny has first-hand experience of needing to declutter, albeit it was only a temporary measure following the sad death of her mother at the age of 10.

Her father sold their home and moved them into a caravan while he built a

“No matter what we do though, home is much more about the people in it rather than the walls around it,” new house. Perhaps it was this zest for bricks and mortar that led Beeny, her brother Diccon and boyfriend (now husband) Graham Swift to set up their own property business.

“There was definitely something in me that wanted to do something different.

At school, I couldn’t concentrate on the things we were being taught because I could never understand the use half the time. Like physics, I could never ‘get it’,

but now as an adult I see the point – for things like wiring your house. I don’t think that you should be learning it from a white page on a textbook though, you should be doing it in a practical way.

I’m more of a ‘learning by experience’ person.” One to practise what she preaches, ambitious Beeny spent months travelling the world alone at just 17, before meeting Graham at 19. They’ve now been together for 24 years.

The couple’s Rise Hall project was arguably bigger than any she had encountered when following the progress of profit-hungry developers over the years. The Grade II listed building refurbishment was the subject of Beeny’s TV series Restoration Nightmare, and not a task for the faint hearted. Beeny bought the 33-bedroom property in 2001 and today it’s decked out in stately dark green, wood panelling and regal red, with all the trimmings of a stately home. But despite its grandiose magnificence, clutter was still an issue.

“Sometimes the bigger the room is the more ‘stuff’ stands out. That sounds strange, but a few bits can look really out of place if the rest of the room is polished and relatively free of material possessions.”

Naturally, tending to the contents of a stately home isn’t a problem many of us will ever have to concern ourselves with, but Beeny’s advice for dealing

with clutter, thankfully, applies even to the smallest studio flat.

“There are some very simple tips I swear by – sneaky cupboards are great and, as you would imagine, really nice, simple shelves and bookcases can be a blessing, but you must make the effort to keep them tidy.

“I absolutely love baskets, boxes and filing folders – there’s nothing worse than a bundle of bank or mortgage statements to depress an area, and don’t be afraid of leaving a few choice items in shot, such as books and magazines; just keep them tidy.”

The busy mother of four is keen to differentiate between property and the personal. “No matter what we do though, home is much more about the people in it rather than the walls around it,” she says. “If you can, make sure different areas in your house are designated for different purposes. If you work from home, keep that work separate from your living area, make sure you have a place where the family sit down to eat; enjoy each others’ company.”

With a family home in Streatham, south London, and her crumbling Yorkshire

mansion turned sparkling wedding venue, Beeny’s eye for a property remains well trained. She’s coy on her next TV project, though has revealed that a destination across the channel might be the next to benefit from her expert take on all things home. “If I could buy a holiday home anywhere, it would probably be in the south of France. We love spending time down there,” she adds.

POTTING SHED A little gardening know-how from Mark Goddard at Coles Plant Centre

I have an area on my front garden planted with conifers and heathers, which has become overgrown and is beginning to encroach on my parking area. I never have time to get into the garden so some low maintenance options would be appreciated.

Your workload can be significantly reduced with a little extra preparation. Firstly remove all the old conifers and heathers and dig over the garden, making sure the soil is replenished with any necessary composts or manures.

Then lay down a porous weed membrane fabric and peg down firmly. This will significantly cut out the amount of weeding required in the future.

When ready to start the replanting, cut a cross into the fabric and peel back, dig out the required hole for the plants, and when planted, push membrane back around the plants.

Planted topiary is a low maintenance option worth considering. The plants are generally slow growing and require only a couple of light trimmings a year. Plants to consider for this would be Buxus sempervirens (box), Ligustrum jonundrum (dwarf privet) or even the fairly recent new addition Ilex crenata “dark green” (holly) with its very attractive shiny green leaves.

To finish, the plants will require a dressing to cover the membrane. The choice is huge, from different types of barks, gravels, stones and even decorative glass.

I would like to grow some glasshouse crops, however over the years my glasshouse has become full of old pots and garden junk. My friend tells me I should fumigate it, can you please advise?

I would certainly recommend a good clear out and discard any old, broken and unwanted garden pots.

They do tend to build up, gathering dust and pests.

Some garden centres will even take them back and send on to a recycling centre.

As your friend rightly suggests, the next stage is fumigation. Once the glasshouse is clear of dirt and dust, sterilise any shelving and pots which you decide to keep with Jeyes Fluid or similar. This can also be used on any solid paths to keep dirt, mould, algae and fungal spores at bay.

Next consider using a sulphur candle, which will eradicate unwanted pests and crawling insects within the greenhouse, including difficult to reach areas. Be sure to vacate the glasshouse as soon as possible.

If you are concerned about using sulphur, try the Deadfast Greenhouse Smoke Generator instead. This again will kill any crawling and flying insects in the greenhouse, however there isn’t any smell or visible deposits.

Now you’re good to grow!

From holiday snaps and videos of school plays, to work presentations and the household finances, we all store a mass of information, which can easily become disorganised. So this month we asked Amanda Daly of Dalycom, for her advice on the best way to spring clean our electronic devices

Many of you may have heard of ‘cloud computing’ - such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud or others - but might be still wondering what it can do for you.

In the simplest terms cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet. When information is stored in ‘the cloud’ it gives you the flexibility to access your information anywhere and from any device.

Cloud computing is no longer a technology just for large corporates, it’s now being used in everyday life for the storage of photographs, household and business information. The apprehension that was associated with this technology in its infancy is being eradicated, with more services becoming available and greater access being achieved via high speed internet connections, whether through home broadband or mobile devices. What’s more you no longer need to be at home or in the office to retrieve information, which means your files are still accessible whilst out shopping or having a coffee with friends.

Another advantage of the cloud is that it removes rigid data restrictions. Think of those occasions when you wanted to send documents via email and you got the bounce back “you have exceeded data limits”. Now with the cloud you simply share a link to access a secure portal.

Apart from becoming an easy way to share information, the cloud offers a new, fun and easy way to keep in touch with family and friends.

You have the facility to authorise to who and when access is granted, so you are completely in control.

The cloud also gives you the ability to use one number and associate this to as many voice devices as you need. If you work from home, it’s not a problem. No one needs to know you are still in your dressing gown, or even up to your neck in nappies. Using cloud computing, you can work anywhere and be available any time, via your preferred device. The beauty of ‘the cloud’ is that you get to choose what’s best for you.

And believe it or not, setting up a cloud account doesn’t need to be difficult either.

Do shop around though, as some providers will go that extra mile and automatically offer to upload photographs, synchronise documents and enable you to share information on the web, for no extra charge!

So what are you waiting for? The cloud offers a refreshing way to communicate, declutter your devices and stay in control of your hectic life!

Entrepreneur Jess Shailes tells us how her hair inspired her business enterprise Born in Leicester General, Mum told me I received a special visit from the chief obstetrician. He was ginger and insisted on being told when a redhead was born on the ward! Sadly not everyone was a fan. Years of bullying at school took there toll, making me insecure and a bit socially awkward. Honestly, I probably still am, but I do feel more confident as an adult knowing that not everyone is going to like me, so I might as well be myself. If they do, it’s a bonus!

Armed with my A’ levels, I left home in Market Harborough, to study at business school. I wanted something vocational from my degree, so opted for a program covering business, advertising and marketing. I think everyone turned up to the first day of the course thinking they’d be an advertising creative, but by the end of six months, only two still wanted to be, and one of them wasn’t me!

My first job after university was a bit of car crash. I wasn’t suitable for the role, it was numbers based and incredibly boring. Thankfully I loved my next job, working in marketing for a small business. It gave me the opportunity to see how a business truly works and the insights I learnt, are still informing my decisions today. But although I was learning a lot, I was struggling to live on my salary, so after a visit to my sister who was teaching in South Korea, I decided to take the plunge and join her. A lower cost of living, plus the opportunity for travel was a huge motivator. My experience was amazing and it’s truly a great country, but it also made me appreciate the simple things about home.

Back in England after two year away, I had some money and an opportunity for a new start. My mum had the idea for Everything for Redheads because we (and presumably others)

Although I had the skills to run the website and digital marketing for the business, there were other areas I knew nothing about. What I didn’t want to do myself, or was quite frankly rubbish at, I outsourced or asked for help.

Business is great, I love researching new products and feel very connected with our ‘redhead’ community. For the last two years, I’ve also hosted Redhead Day UK, which is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate being a redhead and enjoy something that’s often a big part of someone’s identity.

Aside from my own business, I’m also head of digital marketing at The Ideal Marketing Company. I definitely feel more confident supporting other business owners, having been in their shoes. Staying connected with the business community is important to me. Aside from being an active member of the Welland Valley Rotary Club, I was absolutely thrilled to be named as one of the top 5 most connected women in marketing on LinkedIn UK for International Women’s Day last month!
