ogue has named an independent fashion boutique in Leicestershire as one of the best 100 shops outside London. Located in Market Harborough, Doyles is the only designer fashion boutique solely for women in the county to make the list. Doyles was commended for its diverse collections, including their selection of ‘under the radar’ designers. “We were delighted to make the Vogue 100 again,” comments Victoria Hawley, manager of Doyles in Market Harborough. “We aim to be the first choice fashion boutique for the style conscious. This accolade endorses both our choice of designers and reputation as the number one place to shop for women’s designer fashion in the area.” With another branch
in Woburn Sands in Buckinghamshire, the judges commented on both boutiques for their ‘continually changing stock and unique labels,’ stating that ‘Doyles has become a highly reputable, luxury boutique for fashion savvy customers’. Browns’ Bra Fitting Fiesta Supports Oxfam Appeal Browns Lingerie of Stoneygate, Leicester launched Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a weeklong Bra Fitting Fiesta.
F
rom day one customers old and new flocked for bra fittings by international bra fitting expert Lindsey Brown. The boutique also offered an exclusive buy one Bra get the second Bra half price, across all brands such as Marie Jo, Pleasure State, Freya, Fantasie and Lejaby. The idea of the Browns’ Fiesta was to ask women to donate their ill-fitting Bras to Oxfam. With over 250 bras donated within 1 week, the Browns’ team hope this will go a long way in helping Oxfam’s appeal for women of West Africa. Most of the bras will be sent to Senegal where Oxfam’s enterprise Frip Ethique will employ local women to sell the bras to local market traders. Working at Frip Ethique allows women to earn a good salary, generating funds that can be spent on essentials such as food, rent and education.

My hair is very fine, what products can I use to give it lift that’ll last the whole night?

When styling hair to create volume you need a good foundation to work with to ensure that the volume will last for the night. section the hair through and spray a small amount of ghd root lift spray directly on the roots. Then apply ghd total volume foam to the mid lengths and ends. ensure that you use a round brush to blow dry and always dry the roots upwards to create a full finish.

Fool-PRooF hints FoR PeRFeCt PuReeD souP: 1.Cook the onion until they are sweet and translucent. Keep a lid on the pan at this point, as it will ‘sweat’ the onions and stop them browning. This makes the flavour of the soup exceptional. 2.you can soften onions in any fat but using butter will add flavour and adding the vegetable oil will prevent the butter from burning. 3.Make sure the vegetables in the soup are cooked until really soft. test this by pressing them against the side of the saucepan with back of the spoon, they should squash easily. if the vegetables are not cooked, you can purée for years but the soup will always remain granular and never velvety smooth. 4.season a little at the start but taste and season at the end of cooking. Don’t just season, taste and season!

or the last few years there has been a distinct fall in Interior Design ‘style’ as people either indulge in personal expressionism - making their home an extension of their personality – or take things to the other extreme replicating the style of boutique hotels where individuality plays almost no part.
There are a few keys to success in executing either of these styles: Boutique style relies on simple detail executed in innovative lighting solutions and surface texture. Everything is simple, cleancut and uncluttered; colours usually blend well creating a specific atmosphere. Personal expression – as

the name suggests - can take any form although it is frequently artwork, ornaments and antique or classic furniture that achieve centre stage. There is generally much more clashing of colours, textures and objects all fighting for attention. Attention to detail is probably the most important thing to consider when executing a successful interior – look back through interior design of the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s - every little thing in the room plays its part in achieving the overall look whether it be matching curtains and wallpaper or the design on a clock face. Detail is not just in the finish of your plug sockets and switches or the trim on your blind, it is in everything from the placement of your furniture and the
combinations of fabrics and wall-coverings to how you use lighting and where you place artwork.
Think about what you have in your room and make sure that items of personal interest are – if possible located where they can be seen fully and appreciated. Light them well and try not to overshadow or clutter them with ornaments or soft furnishings. Use a good balance of colour and texture throughout your room and pull out the least used colour in accessories or fresh flowers – these will also provide added texture. Splashes of vibrant colour within a monochrome scheme can be
really successful. Look at mixing soft matte fabrics with high gloss finishes or combine large figurative patterns with simple spots or stripes. This does not have to be throughout the whole room, it could simply be executed within the accessories; trims, braids, gimps and multiple fabrics on soft furnishings work together to provide interest. Think about where items will go in your room and try not to have too much of the same in one place – sit your plain couch in front of your patterned wall for example and consider including mirrors and other reflective finishes as these can be great at creating the feeling of space and light as well as bringing patterns and textures from one side of a room to the other.

autumn is the perfect time to give your lawn some tlC. The first thing to do is take a look in your local garden centre for a product called ‘Weed & Feed’. There are many brands but as the name suggests they all do the same job. Follow the pack instructions and give it a week or so to work. ■ The next job involves a little more elbow grease! scarifying the lawn. This means using a lawn rake to remove the dead grass and moss. you’ll be surprised how much comes out. at

With regular use lawns can become hard and compacted. use a normal garden fork to pierce holes in the lawn at regular intervals. insert the fork and give it a wiggle! ■ lastly top dress, scatter a mixture of compost and silver sand over the lawn in a thin even layer. This can be bought ready mixed as top dressing.

I would like to plant a tree in my garden. I have read that now is the time to plant bare-root trees. What does bare-root mean?
Bare-root is a traditional method of planting trees during the winter, usually november to March when the tree is dormant. This allows quicker establishment and causes less trauma to the tree. Bare-root trees have to be ordered from your local garden centre or nursery. you will receive the plant with its roots ‘bare’ and protected with a bag. The only disadvantage is that once you get it home it needs to be planted within 2-3 days or it will begin to dry out. Follow these simple steps to successful tree planting.
■ Dig a hole slightly wider and deeper than the roots. Break up the bottom of the hole with a fork and incorporate some compost and a handful of bone meal. Place the tree in position and make sure it’s straight. The stake can be hammered in next to the tree, taking care to avoid the roots.
This should be done before the hole has been filled. Fill the hole with a mixture of soil and compost. Firm around the tree with your foot to make sure the tree is secure. ■ Finally attach the tree to the stake with an adjustable tie and water well.

ynonymous with period dramas Keira Knightley is officially the most filmed actress within the historical homes of the National Trust. So her desire to move towards something a little more contemporary is highly understandable. Earlier this year, she made a switch into comedy, alongside celebrated funny man Steve Carrell in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, and currently, she’s mid-shoot on Can A Song Save Your Life? the anticipated follow-up feature from John Carney. Both are set in present day, requiring minimal pomp and pageantry. “It’s like I’ve been in a time warp,” Knightley laughs. “I’ve played roles in some truly wonderful, visually breathtaking features, but sometimes you just want to roll on set in a pair of jeans and be ready to go.” Can A Song, which was originally earmarked for Scarlett Johansson, sees Knightley’s character arrive in New York with her longterm boyfriend (Adam Levine) with the aim of pursuing a musical career. She is left dejected when her beau embarks on what looks likely to be a successful solo career without her, but is discovered by producer Dan (Mark Ruffalo) while singing in a bar on an open mic night. Paparazzi shots on the actress filming all over Manhattan have documented Knightley deftly strumming a guitar, busking on the sidewalk. The star fears for the ears
around her. “I can hold a note but I really wonder why I took this movie on sometimes, when I’m truly not that talented. It’s a fabulous story but this could possibly have been an impetuous move on my part.” Recently in promotional mode for her latest costume drama Anna Karenina, it’s clear that while she’s eager to take a risk with a more modern move, Knightley understands the importance of her bread and butter roles. In her latest collaboration with director Joe Wright, after working together on Pride and Prejudice and Atonement, Keira assumed the role of the Tolstoy heroine, tormented by her loveless marriage and shunned for her infidelities. Starring Jude Law and Aaron Johnson as opposing sides of the love triangle, the star admits she found the process of embodying such a classically intense character a draining experience. “I found it quite exhausting! It’s Anna Karenina for God’s sake, not a tea-time sitcom. I’ve always found that some characters star with you, and I think if it’s someone like Anna, it’s very difficult to shake her off at the end of the day.” “That’s why it probably seems like I’m going in a slightly different direction with my current choices,” she muses. “I definitely didn’t want to have to go into another period piece straight away. I thought, ‘that is the path to madness!’ And doing something positive will be very, well, nice.”
Having previously embodied Pride and Prejudice’s Elizabeth Bennett, Pirates of the Caribbean’s Elizabeth Swann, as well as A Dangerous Method’s Sabrina Spielrein, it’s interesting to learn how Knightley actually chooses her roles. “It’s very instinctive. I don’t know what I’m looking for beforehand, I never have done. I literally can’t know because I don’t know what it is that I want to do next until I find it. If somebody asked me what my dream role was I wouldn’t be able to answer that. But as soon as I read something, I know that’s it.” So at this stage in her career, are there things Keira would never do for a move role? “You know, that’s a funny one. As I’m getting older, I’ve been offered some things recently where I’ve gone, ‘if a daughter of mine watched me doing that, would I feel really ashamed? I guess that’s a conversation I’ll need to keep having with myself!”

aul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will be Blood) returns to the director’s chair in the Oscar tipped The Master. We are introduced to Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) on the deck of a US Navy vessel at the close of World War II. As peace is announced he immediately disappears below deck to drain fuel from a torpedo. He’s an unpredictable alcoholic, finding his catharsis in unusual and
dangerous cocktails. 5 years on finds him smuggling aboard a yacht owned by the magnetic patriarch Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who describes himself as a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist and a theoretic philosopher. Once discovered, the tortured Quell is taken in by Dodd and after a hefty series of questions he refers to as “processing”, is accepted into Dodd’s movement known as
“The Cause.” You’d be forgiven for spotting parallels between Lancaster Dodd and his Cause and L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. A fascinating film in rare 70mm, that sticks close to the relationship of two diametrically opposite main

a
s the follow-up to 2010‘s massively successful sigh no More, Mumford & sons second album generates a high degree of positive and negative expectation. Bringing folk music back to the popular realm is no small feat but the first few seconds of Babel affirm the bands’ subtle pop sensibilities that allow them to meld their sound together. Many of the songs are virile, catchy, cathartic, and instrumentally exotic; and well placed refrains and moments of delicacy keep the songs from becoming too arduous to endure. The intensely jangling sound, fronted by Marcus Mumford’s emotive baritone varies little, but this seems only to enhance the catchiest of moments. newest single i Will Wait, alongside Babel, hopeless Wanderer, and holland
Road are the catchiest (and not-coincidentally the most intense, and best) songs on the album, but it would be difficult to describe some of the slowest songs like Reminder and lovers’ eyes as much more than docile or flaccid. There is still enough going on to make most of the album interesting and it is solid in places, but an expansion or diversion from the bands’ trademark ‘hoe-down’ sound could greatly invigorate their alreadymimicked style.

Leicester City Council Boosts Local Economy On 26 September, 150 local suppliers were invited to a business breakfast meeting at the Tigers’ stadium, hosted by Leicester City Council.

he council’s purpose was to talk to local businesses about the latest procurement opportunities for small and medium organisations. The event was opened by Peter Soulsby, the City Mayor, and included presentations from independent commercial services business Zon, Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce & Voluntary

Leicester City Council spends over £350million per year on goods and services of which they have identified £100m could potentially be re-direct

Peter Soulsby explained, “We want to ensure that local suppliers and producers can take advantage of this substantial opportunity for trade with us. ctober saw the launch of the ipatter Business Network at the Stage Hotel in Leicester. With fortnightly meetings alternating between business breakfasts and more structured evening events including key note speakers, ipatter is bringing to Leicester a new brand of networking with the focus as much on education as doing business. Founded in Norwich by local businessman Andy Fisher in 2010, ipatter. com started as an online only platform providing businesses and organisations with a great new way to promote themselves to both other ipatter users and the wider internet. The site is based on the principles of social media, but all updates known as ‘patters’ are also automatically indexed by search engines such as
Google giving potentially massive free extra exposure. With around 4000 businesses now using ipatter, the platform is growing strongly and more than 350,000 business connections have already been established, more than doubling in this year already. As part of its longer term growth strategy ipatter launched its first physical networking meeting in Norwich earlier this year and has now started a national roll out of events now including Leicester, Coventry and Birmingham. he charity quest has raised almost £6,000 for the hospice loRos and prostate cancer charity PRostaid. Chris White of hinckley & Rugby and Mark Robinson of Market harborough travelled 70 miles in nine hours by buggy, narrowboat, a 1929 classic alvis car, a carriage and four horses belonging to Billesdon-based world champion Boyd exell, two tractors, a steam powered 1909 stanley steamer car, a Kirby & West milk float and a tandem bicycle. starting from Market harborough Building society’s hq, they were welcomed by staff at the building society head offices in Melton Mowbray, loughborough, shepshed and earl shilton before pedalling the final leg through the rain to hinckley & Rugby Building society’s hq. Mark Robinson said:
“leicestershire has more building societies than any other county so it was fun to link them all for these great causes. it was a day to remember as everyone we met was so generous with their time and prized cars, horses, boats, bikes and tractors. We hope to break the £6,000 barrier by the time we have all the pledges in.”
