Hello and welcome to the Christmas Edition of The Urban Fox magazine. This month we launch into the party season with fashion, hair and makeup advice. Our ‘Blue Christmas’ feature on pages 6 & 7 is where it all starts. Looking for an alternative to the conventional LBD? Then did you know Blue is the new Black this Christmas?! Here at The Urban Fox we have scoured the high street for the best party dresses so you don’t have to. Got your outfit but no idea what to do with your hair? The team at Cease Salon provide

For our male readers, the biggest fashion purchase of the year is usually the winter coat. So before parting with your hard earned cash, our men’s feature ‘Baby it’s cold outside!’ (p10) looks at 5 of the best jackets for A/W 11. If like me you’ve yet to start your Christmas shopping, check out our last minute Gift Guide on pages 22 to 23. Whatever your budget, there’s plenty of choice to inspire even the most unmotivated of Christmas shoppers. Whilst the high street offers a wide range of gift options, for that something a little extra special, I like to peruse my local independent stores. Two of my favourites are the Stoneygate Shops (p24-25) and Stoughton Grange (p31).

Copy deadlines for next edition: 20th January design and 25th January final print ready artwork. Contributors: Melanie Taylor, Heather White, Cease Hair Salon, Carmen Gilfilan, Shockat Patel, Stephen Milton, Lucy Cufflin, Hayley Tarrington, Nichola Lund-Yates.

For me personally Christmas means but one thing. The ski season is nearly upon us! But before you book a trip to Europe on autopilot again this year, this month’s travel feature ‘Simply the Best’ (p40-41) explores some of the finest ski resorts North America has to offer. Perfect powder, virtually empty slopes and fantastic customer service…a winning combination! Finally The Urban Fox team will be taking a welldeserved break during January. Look out for our next edition delivered week commencing 6 February 2012. In the meantime wishing you all a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year! Until next time

What five items should I have for this season’s capsule wardrobe? Here come the girls

As the festive season approaches and we look forward to spending time with friends and relatives, invitations to get together and party will soon be arriving. Whether it’s a formal occasion and the LBD comes out (again!) or a more casual gathering, my pro-tips for seasonal looks will see you through in style.

Traditional

Ice Princess

For a traditional style makeup this Christmas and New Year, try a champagne or gold shimmer shadow on the eyes. Finely line with a black pencil or liquid and go all out with volume to the lashes. Keep the skin fresh and radiant, with a hint of a coral cheek. We can’t get more festive than a red, velvety lip but if that’s too intense, lighten the look with a red gloss that has a touch of sparkle.

For the Ice Princesses out there, keep the look cooler by using silver and grey tones on the eyes, going for length rather than volume with the lashes. A slightly matte foundation lends a satin finish to the look, and a dash of a pink cheek gives a modern ‘just caught’ flush. Balance out the face with a subtle pink or berry lip and a touch of highlighter on the cupids bow.

Glamour If all out glamour is your style, let’s not forget the smokey eye. Rich shades of purple, bronze and blue create a decidedly glitzy look when lined with intense gel liners and false lashes. Shimmering highlighter on the top of the cheekbone and a more neutral bronze shade underneath; shape the face while leaving the emphasis on the eyes. A fuller coverage foundation works well with this more defined look. Finish with a peachy nude lip and a slick of clear gloss on top.

Whatever your style, have fun experimenting with one of my party looks this Christmas. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Hair it is Merry Christmas!

All your style and hair care questions answered.

Q1. I want an up-do for a

Christmas cocktail party that’s elegant but up to date. What can you suggest? I would say your choice would depend firstly on your outfit. If you have straps or a high-neck then taking all your hair up would look amazing, curled big and glamorous in a bun, either kept neat or messy to suit your mood…very Sex and the City. If your outfit doesn’t have straps then again big glam curls either to one side, with detail to the back or side.

Q2. I want to buy my

sister a fabulous gift set for Christmas? She has naturally curly hair. What would you recommend?

Curly hair is notoriously dry so to keep the frizz monster at bay, moisture is the key! The Moroccan Oil range is a perfectly balanced range catering for all hair types with a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner and the oil that’s making headlines this season for its amazing ability to smooth, protect and heal without residue.

I need stocking filler ideas for my boyfriend. Can you help?

Q3.

Evo products have put together a range of miniatures- ‘Coalition for the groomed’ men’s grooming kit - to cater for your man’s every need. From the ‘Winner’s face balm’ to the ‘Soap Dodger body wash’, its quirky packaging will guarantee a squeaky clean smile on his face this Christmas.

chestnut browns to add glamour

Q4. My hair is light-brown. I’d like to add colour but look natural. What’s on trend this Christmas? To be on trend this festive season, you could indulge in chestnut browns to add glamour and gloss, or be even more daring with deep reds and gorgeous golden tones. Both options are rich and perfect under the Christmas lights. There’s no major up-keep either, so you’ll be looking just as fresh for 2012.

pectacles, contact lenses or laser surgery or indeed a mixture of all three can be used to help you see well, but which one is right for you? In order to make the right choice, it is important to have a discussion with an eye care specialist, who will be able to answer all your questions and help you with any queries or concerns. Our eyes are precious and we only get one pair, so it is essential you feel comfortable with the choice you make and feel you have explored all the avenues available to you.

Glasses

can be worn by almost everyone that needs correction. They are practical and can be easily put on and taken off, which is an important consideration for those who only need correction for specific tasks like reading or computer use.

Unlike days gone by where the choice was restricted, now spectacle frames come in many colours, shape and sizes, adding personality and style. 16

Think Johnny Depp and Tinchy Strider to name just a couple. Certain complexions suit certain colours, as do certain face shapes suit certain frame styles. Those with high prescriptions can have their lenses thinned down making them light and cosmetically appealing. Frames can be made from memory metals

which are extremely tough and titanium which is delightfully light so can be worn by those who have the most demanding lifestyles.

Contact Lenses

are a fabulous alternative to glasses or can be worn when you feel you fancy a change. This small piece of plastic that fit on the tip of a finger can give crystal clear vision.

They are comfortable, convenient and affordable. They can be worn by almost anyone from young children to mature customers and can be worn on a daily basis, with the lenses being thrown away after each wear.

This is ideal for those who only fancy wearing them occasionally for playing sport or for going out. Others are available which can be worn for the whole week without being removed. They are available in very high prescriptions so can be worn by nearly all. To see which option is best for you, book a contact lens consultation.

an option for those who feel spectacles are not compatible to their lifestyle and or do not like wearing contact lenses. Unlike glasses and contact lenses which can correct almost any prescription, laser surgery only corrects up to a certain defect. Apart from prescription strength; pupil size, eye thickness and general health may also be a contraindication for surgery.

If you would like to discuss anything in this article or any other eye relating issue please feel free to call the practice or email me.

The Power of Self-Acceptance

Do you find that you are trapped by the emotions that are triggered by past events? Or do you wake up in the morning and find yourself gripped by anger, revenge, anxiety or worry? Take comfort from the fact that you’re not alone.

W

e live in a fast-paced world and many people are finding that they are in this same situation. Through my experience as a Life Coach, I have come to realise that one of the steps we can take to begin dealing with recurring emotions such as anxiety is self-acceptance. Self-acceptance involves making the decision to be fully at ease with the person you are and where you are in life. We can use up a lot of energy in trying to hide how we really feel about situations. Anger,

Carmen Gilfillan Stimulus Development & Training, 0116 289 3993 / 07988 849 727 carmen@stimulus.uk.com www.stimulus.uk.com

for instance, can be used to hide a feeling of inadequacy if we feel we are ‘not enough’. Worry may manifest itself as a form of fear. One of the first things we should do is therefore look beyond the surface emotion to see what it is concealing.

Ask why?

Ask yourself, what emotions are you going through? Are they pure, or are they hiding other, more deep-seated feelings you don’t want to acknowledge? One self-help technique you can use to reveal your underlying emotions is to ask why five or more times. Asking why over and over simply helps you to open up your mind, encouraging you to delve deeper and deeper into how you behave. Once you’ve got to the deeper, underlying feelings, accept that they are there. Stare your insecurities squarely in

the face, relax your body completely, breathe out, drop your shoulders and fully accept what you see and what you feel... for now.

Let go of the fear

Increasing self-acceptance is essentially about letting go of the fear behind the emotions you’re experiencing. Let go of the fear and you’re left with the physical manifestations of what you’re experiencing, such as tension in different parts of the body, and the raw emotion. By getting rid of the fear, you can choose to view the emotion as a simple reaction to a situation, that you can let go of when the time’s right.

If you can get to a point of saying ‘this, for now, is who and what I am…’ and be ok with yourself for the time being, it becomes much easier to do something about neutralising the emotion.

Neutralisation can come about through the use of such techniques as ‘Sedona’ and ‘Emotional Freedom Therapy’. These techniques allow you to safely acknowledge exactly what your underlying emotions are, bring them to the surface and then release them from your energy system, sometimes permanently.

Through my experience as a Life Coach, I have come to realise that one of the steps we can take to begin dealing with recurring emotions such as anxiety is self-acceptance.

Homemade Gifts: Jewelled Biscotti

Get i nvolv ed!

The supermarket shelves are fully stocked with goodies and as I do my weekly shop I notice that people are piling their trolleys high with extra wine, beer, chocolates and other goodies for over the festive season.

I

don’t know if it all gets eaten but it presents me with a slight dilemma. When visiting friends and family over Christmas it’s nice to take something along as a little extra treat, but if their cupboard is already over stocked, another box of chocolates or bottle of wine seems a rather pointless addition. So, what to take? Something homemade that money can’t buy is the answer and my handmade jewelled biscotti are just the ticket. The recipe

Lucy Cufflin Lucy’s Food Shop Stoneygate Please feel free to contact me at : lucy@lucysfood.co.uk

is fool proof, they can be made 4 – 6 weeks in advance and they are great to make with children, so it can become a really festive family affair. Pack them into some cleaned jam jars or cellophane bags and tie them up with festive ribbons and a little handmade label and I promise you, that these will be a treasured gift. The only problem you’ll have is not eating them all before you give them away – be warned they are really more-ish!

Jewelled Biscotti Makes: 50 small thinly cut biscuits. Or 20 thick cut biscotti for dunking.

Ingredients:

250g self raising flour 175g caster sugar Grated zest of 2 oranges Juice of ½ - 1 orange 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 100g walnuts or pecan roughly chopped 10 x glacé cherries chopped 1 stick of angelica chopped (optional) 20g chopped candied peel 2 eggs

Method:

n Put the flour, cinnamon,

sugar, nuts, candied fruits into a bowl and mix well.

22

n Add the eggs and juice

of ½ an orange (adding the rest of the juice if needed) and mix to a soft sticky dough. This may stick on your hands but don’t worry it’s all part of the fun! n Divide the mix into 2 parts and form into a soft sticky log and place on a baking sheet lined with baking parchment. n Bake uncovered at 325F/170C for 25 minutes or until the logs are risen and golden brown.

n Allow these to cool

completely (they are difficult to cut warm as the inside of the logs breaks up) then slice diagonally into about 25 slim slices per log. n Lay the slices back on the baking sheet and cook for 10 – 15 minutes at 300F/150C or until the biscotti are just golden. The word Biscotti comes from the Italian meaning ‘twice cooked’ and this is exactly what you are doing! n These can be stored in an airtight container for up to 6 weeks

Heart of the Home

Like many rooms in our homes, the Kitchen has evolved. No longer is it primarily a functional space where we cook, it has transformed into the most lived in area of the home.

he kitchen is now a sociable living space, where we entertain, dine, play and relax. Due to the increasing amount of time we are spending in this space, the room sizes are growing to accommodate more elements. In most cases clients are expanding the space by either knocking down adjoining rooms or adding extensions to create open plan interiors.

It stars Germán de Silva as Ruben, a solitary Truck driver working the motorway from Asunción del Paraguay to Argentina, who is asked to transport a

James Morrison returns with his third solo album...and people are listening!

Wide Awake O

ver the last few years, shooting your mouth off about The X Factor was usually reserved for the embittered indie star, incensed by the ‘talent’ shows dominance of the pop culture climate while their latest effort barely cracked the top 20. A shrewd James Morrison however, seemed to pick the right time to take a pop at Simon

38

Cowell’s creation, recently branding its hopefuls “idiots who can’t sing!” and by-product JLS, “completely talentless”. And with the nation switching off from the ITV reality series in their droves, it appears the ‘You Give Me Something’ singer is right on the money. That said the 27-year-old is still keen to do a little damage control. “I think JLS would like

to hit me very hard for what I said” he laughs. “At the end of the day, I’m not a negative person. I don’t usually like talking about people negatively, even if I don’t like them.

It’s more gratifying to write real songs in life instead of...[breaks into JLS’s ‘She Makes Me Wanna’]...I mean c’mon, what the hell is that supposed to be?” With the BBC’s purchase There’s a lot of music of US smash hit ‘The Voice’ out there I don’t like, soon to hit our screens, it seems Morrison is a fan but it works and it sells for them. What of the ‘blind’ talent series alternative. “It’s definitely I try to do is write a better idea. I think it’s real songs, real stuff, which I think is the best type of talent show that’s ever been thought up. more validating.

ABCUFOXDEC2011:Layout 1 21/11/2011 16:49 Page 1 Fans old and new seem to approve of Morrison’s new album ‘The Awakening’

Plus, the US show has some of the best judges I’ve seen in terms of Adam Levine and Cee-Lo Green, and I think everyone is looking forward to that new format, where it’s simply and purely about the talent, nothing else.” No wonder Morrison is speaking so kindly about The Voice, considering he duets on his new album with already confirmed judge, Jessie J. So how did that collaboration come about? “That was just a bit of luck, right place at the right time” he says. “The song wasn’t initially a duet, but when the idea came round to making it one, I started to think of singers I’d like to work with and Jessie J was the only one that had a lot of different aspects to her voice. She’s from an urban scene, and I’m more straight-up sort of pop and the two mixed together so I knew it would be good.”

Fans old and new seem to approve of Morrison’s new album ‘The Awakening’ which

flew into the top 20 album chart in September and stayed there for 7 weeks. Morrison admits that came as a relief after a lukewarm reception of his second album, ‘Songs for You, Truths for Me’. “I’m still very proud of my second album but, on reflection, if I had had more time, I’m sure I would have written better songs. But I didn’t have a lot of space to create because the record company wanted it out at a certain time. I still think I’m doing pretty well - most people get dumped after their first or second album so I’m lucky to still to be making music. This time round, I did exactly what I wanted to do. I did it my way, so if it went wrong it was entirely my fault. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case.”

James Morrison will perform at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall on Monday 6th February 2012.

Simply the Best

The lack of reliable snow, crowded slopes and spiralling prices means that many ski enthusiasts are abandoning the pistes of Europe to venture over the pond to North America.

N

early all those who do, think it well worth the extra travelling time. The benefits include more frequent snowfalls, great visibility, relatively deserted slopes, efficient lifts, fewer queues, quality accommodation, and high standards of service and courtesy. With that in mind, this month we explore the best 5 ski resorts in North America.

1# Best for Charm Aspen, Colorado In the 1880s, Aspen was a prosperous Wild West silver-mining town with a population of 12,000. The town’s fortunes nosedived when the price of silver fell a decade later, and the attractive Victorian buildings fell into disrepair. But the wealth created by the growth of skiing here has resulted in the historic centre being beautifully renovated to its former glory. This is a charming place to stroll around in the evenings, windowshopping and enjoying its varied restaurants and

bars. The four separate ski areas have terrain to suit all abilities. Where to stay: The Little Nell is Aspen’s flagship hotel, located just steps from the gondola. The Bar is a must see aprèsski venue and popular amongst celebrities.

2# Best for Partying Whistler, Canada

North American resorts aren’t generally big on partying but Whistler is a notable exception. The bars at the foot of the slopes are busy from mid-afternoon; restaurants

get booked up weeks in advance and the clubs rock until the early hours. There’s a huge range of bars, from microbreweries and comfortable lounge bars to Irish pubs and sports bars. The slopes form the biggest ski area in North America, with terrain to suit every standard. Where to stay: The Four Seasons Resort offers elegance and luxury. The hotel was included in Conde Nast Traveller’s 2010 Gold List of World’s Best Places to Stay.

Banff is located in the heart of Banff National park in an area of stunning natural beauty. It has 3 ski areas, each a bus ride from town. Norquay is the nearest and smallest, a few minutes away; Sunshine Village is 20 minutes away and the largest Lake Louise is 45 minutes away.

Comparatively to other Canadian resorts, the cost of accommodation, eating/ drinking and lift passes in Banff is low. CHILDREN IN NEED at nine photos On Sunday 13 November local photographer Joanne Withers of Nine Photos opened her studio for a special Children in Need fundraising event. Joanne offered family portraits in return for a donation to Children in Need. Speaking from her new studio in Francis Street, Stoneygate, Joanne said, “I had been thinking of doing something for Children in Need this year and wanted to raise money in a way that people would get something back for the money they were donating. I came up with the idea of being able to give people photographs to thank them for their generosity.” Whilst there was no sign of Pudsey on the day, lots of families did pop into the studio to have their portraits taken. The event raised £80 and Joanne’s efforts were seen on the pledges screen on Children in Need appeal night on Friday 18 November. And she received a personal thank you from BBC Nottingham too! Asked about the event, Joanne said, “The families that came in were great fun and we got some beautiful images of their children”.

Christmas comes early for Lucy at Highcross Leicester Christmas came early for 13-year-old Lucy McNabb when she was treated to a surprise visit to see Santa in his Highcross Christmas Grotto. The youngster from Wigston enjoyed a visit to see Santa after the Grotto opened in the mall on Sunday 13 November. The visit was part of an organised trip for Lucy, who attends Rainbows Hospice for Children & Young People in Loughborough. The opening of Santa’s Grotto - located on the lower mall opposite Waterstones - kicked off Highcross’ programme of Christmas activities, with the centre’s Christmas tree now in place in St Peter’s Square, and the annual festive toy appeal now underway. This year’s appeal urges shoppers to donate an extra gift this Christmas, which will then be sent to Rainbows. Gurvinder Rupra, marketing manager at Highcross, said: “Christmas is the most exciting and busiest time of the year, and we’ve made every effort to ensure there is plenty going on to keep the kids and adults entertained. “We’ve already taken lots of Grotto bookings – leading right up to Santa’s last day on Christmas Eve – so we would advise all shoppers to book up in advance at www. highcrossleicester. com to secure your place.” Entry to Santa’s Grotto costs £4.50 per child, which includes a present.

Kibworth Golf Club: Fashion, Beauty and Style Event On Wednesday 30 November, Kibworth Golf Club was delighted to host a fashion and beauty evening in aid of the Captain’s Charities, Guide Dogs and English Blind Golf Association.

Firework Spectacular at Welford Road Leicester Tigers were back on home soil on Saturday 5 November for a crucial Aviva Premiership Rugby Round 8 fixture against London Irish.

Models strutted the catwalk to showcase a wide range of garments and accessories by local Market Harborough retailers East, Phase Eight and Number 34. Caught on camera by photographers from Cramphorn Colour Printers, the models’ ‘look’ was completed by hair and make-up professionally styled by Market Harborough based Isis hair salon and Beauty Spot. Gifts, cards, clothes, manicures and books were also available for sale during the evening in the ‘Birdie Bazaar’. Lady Captain, Suzanne Clampin said of the event, “The evening was an all round wonderful success in the run up to Christmas, raising over £1300 for the Captain’s charities”.

Not only were sparks flying on the pitch, a musical firework spectacular entertained fans at the end of the final whistle. Chris Rose, Head of Brand Development at Leicester Tigers said “We are really proud to be bucking the trend of falling attendances and the fireworks were a way to thank our amazing fans for continuing to follow their team through a tough start to the season.” In tribute to Remembrance Day, Leicester Tigers also joined forces with the Royal British Legion to help raise money for the Poppy Appeal. Players and fans came together before the match for a minute’s silence and an amazing £4,852.55 was raised in the Poppy Appeal collection.

Status Boost your Business

Having a Social Media presence is crucial to any business. Not only does it raise brand awareness by driving traffic to your website; it builds a community around your cause and allows you to fully understand industry trends and news.

S

o, does your business have a Facebook presence? It should! According to Erik Qualman, author of Socialnomics: How Social Media Transforms the Way We Live and Do Business, 90% of consumers trust peer recommendations. If people are talking about your brand, you surely want to know about it, whether it’s good or bad! Social Media allows you to understand your target market, and helps you appreciate where you could be going wrong. It also gives your brand a voice, and it’s up to you how it gets heard. But if you have

a Facebook page for your business, how can you ensure you are getting the most out of it? There are many different elements involved in having a successful business page.

Firstly it should be eye-catching. You can make your page stand out by having a specially designed ‘Landing Page’, which will be the first thing people see when they go on to your page. This can include graphics and your logo to match your website. The landing page can also be used to give something away for free once the ‘Like’ button is clicked. This is something that will appeal to most, if not all

customers! Integrating a contact form to be filled out is something that business pages are also able to do, helping you collect client information for your databases and market research. Having an attractive Facebook page is fantastic, of course, but the only way it will be truly successful is to post quality content. There’s so much information posted all over the internet daily, it can be hard to grab the attention of your consumers. Having strong content is crucial.

Lastly, but by no means least, it is so important to interact on Facebook. We see so many Facebook Business pages that constantly send 44

If Facebook was a country it would be the third largest in the world’ Erik Qualman

out generic updates, but don’t actually interact with anyone. So whether it’s replying to comments, questions and yes, even complaints remember to communicate. This is key if you want to maintain relationships with consumers and other businesses, as it builds connections and allows you to take control of the ‘face’ of your brand. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at statusboost@gmail.com
