HORTON FINE ARTS: GROWING CREATIVE PASSIONS
Horton High School Fine Arts Student Council
The fine arts are the flowers in the field of life, and Horton High School’s fine arts programs offer students a chance to cultivate their artistic passions. The school’s fine arts encompass three main programs: music, theatre, and visual arts.
Music
Music at Horton is driven by passion and creativity. Students learn a variety of skills, including playing multiple instruments, composing, and performing in choirs. They explore a diverse repertoire, from orchestral works and jazz to pieces showcasing strings or saxophones. The music department hosts three major concerts annually, alongside smaller events for fundraising and fun.
Theatre
Horton’s theatre program invites students to explore the creative world of acting and drama. With guidance from dedicated teachers, students build confidence in their ideas and stage skills. This year, Horton is collaborating with Quick As A Wink Theatre and Avon View High School to stage Les Misérables: School Edition. Keep an eye out for performance dates and join us in celebrating this timeless musical.
Visual Arts
Horton’s visual arts program focuses on creativity through painting, sculpting, and photography. Students are encouraged to play with their artistic instincts, expressing themselves through their creations. Artwork is showcased in a biannual art show and at various community locations, providing students an opportunity to share their expressions with the public.
Essence of Creation
Experience Horton’s creative expressions in person on December 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Essence of Creation. This event highlights the artistic talents of Horton students and aims to inspire the community.
Thank you for supporting Horton High’s fine arts programs!
MUSIC IN COMMUNITIES
Kim
Barlow
We have some exciting events ahead that would make perfect “experience gifts.” All the details and tickets are available on our website: [www.musicincommunities.com](http:// www.musicincommunities.com).
Friday, December 6 – All-Ages Series: Aquakultre with Planet Caravan
Join us for a night with singer and rapper Aquakultre, with openers Planet Caravan at the Ross Creek Annex. Lance Sampson, aka Aquakultre, is a Polaris-nominated, Prism Prize-winning artist who gained national attention in 2018 after winning CBC’s Searchlight competition with his song “Sure.” His music and lyrics reflect his truth and his place in the community as a Black Nova Scotian. Aquakultre advocates for equality, peace, and unity while standing with those without a voice in their communities. Planet Caravan, a heavy rock band from CK High School, has been playing together for several years and continues to impress with their sound.
Sunday, December 8 – Lunch Matinee: Joe H. Henry
We have a lunch matinee with Joe H. Henry. These matinees are designed to make it easier for families with young kids to enjoy live music. We provide a simple, affordable meal followed by great music. Kids eat for free, and there is childcare on site. It’s a great, budget-friendly date night that won’t interfere with bedtime! We encourage you to bring gently used toys for donation to the local food bank’s toy drive. Joe will gift everyone who donates a copy of his multi-award-nominated debut CD. With a voice “as powerful as a freight train,” Joe H. Henry is a powerhouse
performer. We can’t wait to hear him at the Ross Creek Annex!
Saturday, December 14 – Christmas Concert: Adrianna Ciccone & Ellen Gibling
Join us for a special performance by two outstanding instrumentalists, Adrianna Ciccone (fiddle) and Ellen Gibling (harp), as they share music from their newly released fiddle and harp Christmas album The Pear Tree. They’ll perform a mix of new and traditional carol melodies, as well as original tunes in a festive style.
Thursday, January 23 – Kaia Kater Live in Canning
We are thrilled to announce that Kaia Kater will be performing in Canning on January 23! Tickets are available now and would make an excellent Christmas gift. Montreal-born Grenadian-Canadian Kaia’s jazz-infused voice and deft songwriting have earned acclaim from NPR’s Tiny Desk, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, and No Depression. Through her artful banjo playing and lush songwriting, Kaia draws on influences from Quebec, the Caribbean, and Appalachia.
Winter Season Preview – Upcoming Events
Our winter season is shaping up to be exciting! After Christmas, we have New Old Time with Art Boumann, Zakary Miller, Anna & Alex at the Annex; an All-Ages show with Freya Milliken & band; a square dance with Sloecooker and Zakary Miller calling; and we’re also working on a new date for Line Dancing with Sweet Bean. Visit our website for tickets and details on all these events.
HIDDEN GEMS
Margot Bishop
December is a month of preparation. It’s a time to get ready for what lies ahead—whether it’s celebrating Advent, preparing for Christmas, or ensuring your home is stocked with wood and warm clothes for the winter. While some preparations are essential, others can be addressed later. The key is to avoid unnecessary stress. Start small, and if you need assistance, reach out to your church, food bank, or even order a meal from a community dinner. Helping those less fortunate is a meaningful way to embrace the spirit of the season.
The Gift of Giving
A gift can be more than a wrapped present. According to the dictionary, a gift is:
1. Something given or received without payment—a present, boon, or favour.
2. A natural ability or talent.
Gift-giving doesn’t have to cost money. Acts of kindness, like running an errand, helping with a chore, or making a phone call, can be just as meaningful. Writing a heartfelt letter—a rarity in today’s digital age—can be a cherished gift. Use your unique talents to create or do something only you can offer, turning your gift into something truly special.
Awareness and Celebrations in December
- The first week of December is Handwashing Awareness Week—essential for staying healthy during the cold and flu season.
- The second week marks Human Rights Week, a reminder to appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in Canada, freedoms that are denied to many around the world.
- December is also Food Service Safety Month and Safe Toys and Gifts Month.
Symbols of December
- Birthstones: Turquoise and zircon, symbolizing prosperity.
- Flowers: Narcissus and holly. Be cautious— holiday plants like mistletoe, ivy, yew, poinsettia, and holly are toxic to humans and pets.
Special Days to Celebrate
December is rich with festivities, including Hanukkah, the winter solstice, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Eve. Celebrate in a way that reflects your culture and traditions.
Your Greatest Gift Amidst the hustle of the season, don’t overlook what’s truly important—your faith. Whether it’s faith in your ancestry, culture, traditions, music, or language, these elements make you unique. Most importantly, have faith in yourself.
Spell it out:
- G: Gratitude
- I: Inspiration
- F: Family and friends
- T: Truth
Wishing you all the best this holiday season. Stay safe, and remember: the greatest gift of all is you. Whether hidden or not, you are a gem.
VALLEY RUGBY UNION’S POWER DUO TAKES OFF FOR NEW ZEALAND’S SUMMER SEASON
Jacob Patterson
As the winter chill settles across the Annapolis Valley, two familiar faces from the Valley Rugby Union, Amelia Branson and McKenzie Lunt, are off to New Zealand, leaving their green truck behind in Windsor.
Amelia, a dedicated member of the Valley Rugby executive team, handles photos and social media for the club. McKenzie, on the other hand, has decided to switch gears and take up curling, marking an exciting new chapter in his athletic journey. Both are passionate ambassadors for local sports— Amelia will continue her support of rugby from behind the scenes, while McKenzie is
eager to introduce curling to New Zealand. Their departure offers a well-deserved break, as they plan to spend time with family, reconnect with old friends, and enjoy the summer season in New Zealand. They will return to Windsor in February, just in time for the spring season—Amelia to support rugby and McKenzie to dive into curling.
While local rugby fans will miss their presence, both are sure to bring back fresh perspectives and enthusiasm from their time abroad.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Renowned composer Mozart had a sister nicknamed Nannerl. During their childhoods, she was as much a musical prodigy as he. They toured Europe doing performances together, playing harpsichord and piano. Some critics regarded her as the superior talent. But her parents ultimately decided it was unseemly for her, as a female, to continue her development as a genius. She was forcibly retired so she could learn housekeeping and prepare for marriage. Is there a part of your destiny, Aries, that resembles Nannerl’s? Has some of your brilliance been suppressed or denied? The coming months will be an excellent time to recover and revive it.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Do you know if you have any doppelgangers, Taurus? I bet you will meet one in the coming weeks. How about soul friends, alter egos, or evil twins? If there’s no one like that in your life right now, they may arrive soon. And if you already know such people, I suspect your relationships will grow richer. Mirror magic and shadow vision are in the works! I’m guessing you will experience the best, most healing kind of double trouble. Substitutes and stand-ins will have useful offers and tempting alternatives. Parallel realities may come leaking through into your reality. Opportunities for symbiosis and synergy will be at an all-time high. Sounds like wild fun!
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Humans have been eating a wide range of oranges since ancient times. Among the most popular type in modern times is the navel orange. It’s large, seedless, sweet, juicy, and easy to peel. But it didn’t exist until the 1820s, when a genetic mutation on a single tree in Brazil spawned this new variety. Eventually, the navel became a revolutionary addition to the orange family. I foresee a metaphorically comparable development in your life during the coming months, Gemini. An odd tweak or interesting glitch could lead to a highly favorable expansion of possibilities. Be alert for it.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian, you are a finalist for our “Most Resourceful and Successful Survivor of the Year” trophy. And if you take a brief trip to hell in the next two weeks, you could assure your victory. But wait! Let me be more exact: “Hell” is an incorrect terminology; I just used it for shock effect. The fact is that “hell” is a religious invention that mischaracterizes the true nature of the realm of mystery, shadows, and fertile darkness. In reality, the nether regions can be quite entertaining and enriching if you cultivate righteous attitudes. And what are those attitudes? A frisky curiosity to learn truths you have been ignorant about; a brave resolve to unearth repressed feelings and hidden yearnings; and a drive to rouse spiritual epiphanies that aren’t available when you’re in the trance of everyday consciousness.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In my astrological opinion, you need and deserve big doses of fun, play, pleasure, and love. Amusement and enchantment, too. As well as excitement, hilarity, and delight. I trust you will schedule a series of encounters and adventures that provide you with a surplus of these necessary resources. Can you afford a new toy or two? Or a romantic getaway to a sanctuary of adoration? Or a smart gamble that will attract into your vicinity a stream of rosy luck? I suggest that you be audacious in seeking the sweet, rich feelings you require.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): December will be Home Enhancement Month for you Virgos. Get started immediately! I’ll offer tips for how to proceed and ask you to dream up your own ideas. 1. Phase out décor or accessories that no longer embody the style of who you have become. 2. Add new décor and accessories that will inspire outbreaks of domestic bliss. 3. Encourage everyone in your household to contribute creative ideas to generate mutual enhancement. 4. Do a blessing ritual that will raise the spiritual vibes. 5. Invite your favorite people over and ask them to shower your abode with blessings.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran songwriter and producer Kevin MacLeod has composed over 2,000 pieces of music—and given all of them away for free. That’s why his work is so widespread. It has been featured in thousands of films and millions of YouTube videos. His composition “Monkeys
Spinning Monkeys” has been played on TikTok over 31 billion times. (PS: He has plenty of money, in part because so many appreciative people give him free-will donations through his Patreon page.) I propose we make him your inspirational role model in the coming weeks and months, Libra. How could you parlay your generosity and gifts into huge benefits for yourself?
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): According to my grandmother, I have such a mellifluous voice I should have pursued a career as a newscaster or dj on the radio. In eighth grade, my science teacher admired my work and urged me to become a professional biologist. When I attended Duke University, my religious studies professor advised me to follow his path. Over the years, many others have offered their opinions about who I should be. As much as I appreciated their suggestions, I have always trusted one authority: my muses. In the coming weeks and months, Scorpio, you may, too, receive abundant advice about your best possible path. You may be pressured to live up to others’ expectations. But I encourage you to do as I have done. Trust your inner advisors.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I invite you to get a head start on formulating your New Year’s resolutions. January 1 is a good time to instigate robust new approaches to living your life, but the coming weeks will be an even better time for you Sagittarians. To get yourself in the mood, imagine you have arrived at Day Zero, Year One. Simulate the feeling of being empty and open. Imagine that nothing binds you or inhibits you. Assume that the whole world is eager to know what you want. Act as if you have nothing to prove to anyone and everything to gain by being audacious and adventurous.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): There was a long period when many popular songs didn’t come to a distinct end. Instead, they faded out. The volume would gradually diminish as a catchy riff repeated over and over again. As you approach a natural climax to one of your cycles, Capricorn, I recommend that you borrow the fade-out as a metaphorical strategy. In my astrological opinion, it’s best not to finish abruptly. See if you can create a slow, artful ebb or a gradual, graceful dissolution.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): When he was young, Aquarian musician and sound engineer Norio Ohga wrote a critical letter to the electronics company now known as Sony. He complained in detail about the failings of their products. Instead of being defensive, executives at the company heeded Ohga’s suggestions for improvement. They even hired him as an employee and ultimately made him president of the company at age 40. He went on to have a stellar career as an innovator. In the spirit of the Sony executives, I recommend that you seek feedback and advice from potential helpers who are the caliber of Norio Ohga. The information you gather in the coming weeks could prove to be highly beneficial.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): What would your paradise look and feel like? If you could remake the world to suit your precise needs for maximum freedom, well-being, and inspiration, what changes would you instigate? Now is an excellent time to ponder these possibilities, Pisces. You have more ability than usual to shape and influence the environments where you hang out. And a good way to rouse this power is to imagine your ideal conditions. Be bold and vivid. Amuse yourself with extravagant and ebullient fantasies as you envision your perfect world.
PLUG INTO THE SUN
EARTH GARDEN
Brendan Brewster
Out of cracked spaces they bloomed in anti-ochre. Cerulean filaments, waterfalls, sky of every hue, patience at dawn, milk-weave, and Mother’s psalm. All surrounded by fern knots. And from the gale, blew in the chords which formulated birdsong. Out of marshlands, overhead and under, temperate melancholy mixed with peat. Soft underfoot, dew covered. Until all shades fall together. Forever turning, the Earth garden pivots over and again until it sees itself reflected back from endless oceans. Feted raindrops fall on unthreatened hillsides while we sing stories under starlight.
Riddle Roundup
I’m evergreen, but I’m not a tree, Decked with red, I’m hung festively.
A kiss beneath me is tradition so sweet, I’m found above doorways where people meet.

Owl’s could very well be nature’s most interesting species. Do you have a naturalist on your gift list this year? If so, we have the ideal gift...
Written by renowned biologist Soren Bondrup-Nielsen, A Sound Like Dripping Water, is an exploration into the fascinating world of the Boreal Owl. Soren’s inquiring mind and passion for all living things and the great outdoors brings an infectious sense of adventure to his studies and his fieldwork.
His writings are punctuated by close encounters with coyotes, bears and a moose, glimpses of the Aurora Borealis, and self-discovery. With
some of the author’s original journal entries, notes and sketches, A Sound Like Water Dripping captures what continues to be an inspiring dedication to the study of ecology.
“Owls seem to hold a fascination for just about everyone.” says BondrupNielsen. “They represent wisdom rather than reminding us of the fierce predators that they are.” If you are passionate about the world around us, this is a great way to explore more of it. If you or someone on your list loves nature, this just might be the perfect gift.

COMMUNITY GATHERS TO REMEMBER VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Wanda Campbell
The Wolfville Farmers’ Market will host an important annual event on Friday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m., bringing together campus and community to honour and remember those lost to femicide. Organized by Acadia University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the Human Rights and Equity Office, this gathering marks Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The ceremony will include music, poetry, and reflections from community representatives, alongside the solemn reading of the names of the 14 women killed in the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. To commemorate the occasion, Acadia professor Wanda Campbell has compiled a decade’s worth of poetry
written for past ceremonies into a new booklet titled A Cairn of Poems. The collection features three new works and explores themes of loss, remembrance, and the continued fight against gender-based violence.
Proceeds from the booklet, available for $10 or more at the Acadia Bookstore and the ceremony, will support the Mi’kmaw Family Healing Centre and Chrysalis House. These organizations, regular contributors to the event, work tirelessly to address the impacts of violence against women and call for community action.
The ceremony is a powerful reminder that while we mourn lives lost, the fight against violence remains ongoing—a call to action for all to stand together in solidarity.
THE ARTS AS A PATH TO HEALTHY COMMUNITIES
Kimberly Smith
A healthy community values every individual and fosters the well-being of all its members. But how can the arts contribute to building such a community?
Since 2000, the Alexander Society for Inclusive Arts has been creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to connect through stories, drama, music, dance, and visual arts. In 2025, as the society celebrates 25 years of inclusive programming, they will share monthly posts highlighting arts-based activities that promote meaningful engagement for everyone.
Stay tuned for inspiring ideas to use the arts as a tool for nourishing connections and creating inclusive communities.

NHB CALLS ON THE NAUGHTY LIST
Garry Leeson
Santa is disappointed. Over the years, the instruments he’s delivered with such care have been abandoned, left to gather dust in closets and mould in basements.
Santa doesn’t ask for perfection—he just wants to hear them played.
This holiday season, Brian Johnston, conductor of the New Horizons Band (NHB) and one of Santa’s honorary elves, invites everyone— naughty or nice—to dust off those instruments and join in the festive cheer.
The NHB welcomes all ages, from one to 92. Currently, the band boasts two senior grandparents playing alongside their teenage grandson in the brass section, proving that the family that plays together stays together.
Make your spirits bright this Christmas! Grab your instrument and join the fun every Wednesday night, starting January 15, in the Horton High School music room.
BOOKS BY LOCALS
Wendy Elliott
The Wolfville Newcomers Club, which began 20 years ago, spawned a writers’ group early on. Several members have gone on to publish books, with two celebrated new releases this fall.
One of the club’s founders, Yvette MacDonald, is a lifelong learner. She studied psychology, is proficient in both French and English, regularly takes courses, and has been studying piano for 14 years. She is also a writer.
Her debut novel, Honour Above All, is a compelling read. It follows Mary Clark, a promising young lawyer tasked with handling the estate of a wealthy friend. In the process, Mary uncovers a decades-old letter that tests her integrity, her legal skills, and her loyalty to her client.
When Mary’s honour is called into question, star lawyer Patrick Coyle steps in to help. Set in Ottawa and its surroundings in 1966, Honour Above All delves into themes of gender discrimination, childhood trauma, and resilience. The book delivers a suspenseful legal drama that is also a satisfying romance.
Another Wolfville writer, Marie Mossman, has just released her second novel. Maud, the heroine of Halifax Calling, was a minor character in Mossman’s first novel, A Rebel for Her Time, published by Moose House in 2020.
In this sequel, Halifax Calling, Maud, inspired by her heroic Aunt Della, sets out to break societal expectations and forge her own path in Nova Scotia during the 1920s and 1930s. Her journey takes her through miserable jobs, entanglements with multiple suitors, and experiences that lead her from small villages to Montreal and Halifax.
Mossman, a former teacher and speech-language pathologist, was encouraged to write after winning a contest with her non-fiction piece, Gang of Three Canucks Hunts Peking Duck Her new novel is also published by Moose House.
The Secret Life of a Cat
Theresa Marie MacLean grew up in Annapolis Royal, where her childhood play inspired her imagination. Today, she channels that creativity into her writing.
Her debut book, The Extraordinary Life of Romulus Donkwad, was inspired by a dream about her cat’s secret life. MacLean, who lives in Berwick with her husband and three cats, imagines what felines might be up to while their owners are away.
In her book, many cats live secret lives as spies, hackers, and messengers working to save the world. Romulus and his brother Remus are new recruits in the Cerulean Order of Felines, training to prevent environmental catastrophes. The Extraordinary Life of Romulus Donkwad was published by Friesen Press.

Marie Mossman, seated, was reading and selling copies of her new novel, Halifax Calling, during a launch at Randall House in Wolfville.
Yvette MacDonald signed a copy of her debut novel, Honour Above All, for a friend at her launch at the Wolfville Legion Centre.

THE LONGEST NIGHT CONCERT
Jennifer Wyatt
What? A Winter Solstice concert featuring music, stories, good friends, and quiet joy.
Who? Harpists and singer-songwriters Ardyth & Jennifer, with Pam Mason (bass) and Clara Whitman (violin).
When? December 21, 2024 7 p.m.
Where? St. James Anglican Church, Kentville. Why? In support of the Nightlight Shelter in Kentville.
The longest night of the year occurs on December 21, when the Earth is farthest from the sun. The winter solstice is an important time in many cultures. For over 20 years, Celtic harpists and recording artists Ardyth & Jennifer have presented a quiet concert of music, stories, and reflection at St. James Anglican Church in Kentville on this night. This evening offers a more contemplative, quieter celebration for those seeking respite from the hectic rush of the commercial Christmas season and the pressures of societal expectations.
Over the years, a sold-out crowd in a packed church has been a testament to the need for this type of peaceful event. Many people experience feelings of isolation and mental health struggles during the Christmas season, when an overzealous holiday atmosphere seems to permeate everything. Not all families fit the common holiday image or can live up
to perceived expectations, and financial concerns can make the holidays even more difficult.
For many, meeting basic needs becomes a challenge. This concert provides a quiet moment of reflection, with all proceeds going to support the Nightlight Shelter hosted by St. James Anglican Church in Kentville.
Ardyth & Jennifer’s music has taken them throughout the Maritimes, Ontario, and the New England states, where they have performed at many folk festivals and concerts. With five CDs of original songs and unique arrangements of traditional folk tunes, Ardyth & Jennifer have become well-known ambassadors for Nova Scotia across the Maritimes and beyond. The addition of Pam Mason’s solid, joyful bass and Clara Whitman’s creative violin for the Longest Night concert has made this event a beloved holiday tradition.
The Longest Night concert will take place on Saturday, December 21, at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for pre-sale at www.eventbrite.ca or at the door for $20 (cash only). All proceeds will support the Nightlight Shelter hosted by St. James Anglican Church in Kentville.

NOVA SCOTIA THRESHOLD SINGERS SEEK NEW MEMBERS IN THE VALLEY
John Rockwell
The Nova Scotia Threshold Singers provide comfort through song for individuals in hospice and palliative care. Offering a cappella singing at the bedside, their songs convey love, ease, reassurance, and letting go.
The group welcomes members of all spiritual paths, with no religious affiliation. Singers do not need to read music but should be able to carry a tune, sing softly, blend with others, and convey kindness through their presence and voice.
Threshold Singers rehearse weekly to build
skills, develop a repertoire, and reflect on the sensitive nature of singing for those at the end of life. New members receive training before joining experienced singers at the bedside.
The group has sung at Valley Hospice in Kentville and regularly performs in Halifax’s Palliative Care Unit. They are now looking to expand into the Annapolis Valley.

Singing also releases endorphins, natural mood enhancers that make it both healthy and fun. Winter can feel long and lonely, but choir is always enjoyable! No experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn.
The next session begins January 7. Reserve your spot today!
