She was feral and very shy but has received some special TLC and is coming around nicely. She is a beautiful girl with gorgeous large eyes who deserves a loving home. We had 9 adoptions in July!!!
Steve entered this world in Halifax, was brought up in Palm Springs and for some time during the year when he is not on the road, lives in San Diego. He entertains around the world, spending time in Australia, England, Germany, France, USA and Canada.
Noineen Noiny Noin is released on Arrival Records and will be available for purchase at the close of the show in the lobby of the Al Whittle Theatre. Tickets are available at Box of Delights. For any further information please call Pat at 542-0113.
Furry Feature brought to you by
Direct billing for some Blue Cross Plans Day and evening appts available
teve Poltz has graced the stages of Wolfville on several occasions in recent years. Once again on Wednesday, August 30, 2012 he will honour us with a show at the Al Whittle Theatre. Steve moves on stage with the energy of a six year old, engrosses an audience with the presence of a well - seasoned entertainer, he never stops smiling, and loves what he does.
His 13th full-length album is titled Noineen Noiny Noin referring to the year that he first toured Australia, the pronunciation deftly delivered by an Aussie promoter. The album is said to be a “windin-the-face joyride”. It consists of a range of themes which include “love, murder, Johnny Cash and transvestites”. The album’s final song “Some Things About Me You Should Know” is a “heartbreaking confessional and instant Poltz classic that showcases his head-shaking, melodic brilliance”.

Lorne Elliott Performance in Wolfville
T
he absolutely original comedian Lorne Elliott will be bringing his unique brand of humour to Wolfville on Saturday, August 25.
t
Autumn Series 2012 all films subject to change without notice
Acadia Cinema’s Al Whittle Theatre
behind the Acadia marquee, 450 Main St., Wolfville, NS
A humourist, storyteller, musician, and playwright, Elliott is touring his one-man concert show ‘The Collected Mistakes’. Canadian born, Lorne has a very special show of comedy and music, totally original, entertaining, uplifting and foolish enough to make everybody laugh. Along with his unique and wacky performance style, it is the timelessness of his material, joined with keen observations of today's trends that make LORNE ELLIOTT's work so special. His performance, in aid of the Wolfville Historical Society’s Randall House Museum, will take place at the Al Whittle Theatre at 8pm.

LIVE IN CONCERT! Jenny Macdonald, The Funtime Brigade, Ryan Roberts, Laura Roy
O
n Wednesday, August 22, four top-notch acts will hit the stage at the Old Orchard Heritage Barn [Greenwich] for an evening of music, dancing, and fun! Antigonish-native, Jenny MacDonald, recently signed on with HMP Recording & Development (Vancouver, BC), and has shared the stage this year with the likes of Garrett Mason (Halifax), Charlie A’Court (Halifax), and CBC Radio favorite, Jeffery Straker (Toronto). MacDonald’s sophomore CD, “Bye, Bye, Mr. Bluesman” was nominated for “Blues Album of the Year” at the 2011 Nova Scotia Music Awards. MacDonald will perform a mix of original blues and roots supported by her band. Pete Adams, Jesse Potter, Oliver Lund, and Jamie Loughead make up the rhythms, lyrics, and melodies of The Funtime Brigade. Each mainstays in the Wolfville music scene, the group comes together with a charming mix of original pop, folk, and hip-hop, woven with a great sense of humor and a hankering for having a good time. Cape-Breton native, Ryan Roberts, has spent most of the last few years living, writing, and performing in Nashville, TN with Special Consensus. He is Eastern Canadian Bluegrass’, “Songwriter of the Year” five years consecutively, and his material has been performed by Rose Cousins, Kevin Davison, The Spinney Brothers, True Blue, Justin Carbone, the Jeanette Williams Band, The Novelty Salesman, and many of his other contemporaries. Laura Roy hails from Canning, Nova Scotia and has been performing in the Annapolis Valley since the age of 13. Her recent studies in the Music Arts program at the Nova Scotia Community College, travels to Ghana, and collaborations with artists such as Halifax hip-hopper Quake, have all influenced her RnB-pop sound. The concert takes place on Wednesday, August 22nd at 7pm at the Old Orchard Heritage Barn. Tickets are $12 and available in advance at T.A.N. Café (Wolfville) or at the door. she tries to express the mood of the land at a particular moment. She finds herself drawn to certain places and paints those places over and over, in different lights and seasons. “For me, painting is a way of seeing. Each time I paint a place, it seems that I come to know it more.” Carol Pye is a Nova Scotian who first chose an academic path and spent several years at University, studying at Dalhousie, Acadia and Queen’s. After graduating from Queen’s University, Carol worked as a health professional in Nova Scotia for many years. Painting was always her “other love”, one that would not be denied.

Colibri Software: Creative and Innovative projects for the Community
knows how to obtain the content to present when a visitor asks for a web page. “It is like a waiter going to fetch requested meals as opposed to having all the food presented in an unchanging buffet”, says Read.
C
olibri Software is a local software company made up of a growing team of software developers most of whom are Acadia grads or students. Founded by John Read, a professor and software developer, Colibri concentrates on creative and innovative projects for the community. “We work with local companies to develop the software they need” says Read. By matching local projects with local talent, Colibri brings cutting edge technology to the Valley, while keeping well paid jobs here. At the same time, Colibri is building software products that will help drive the economy in the future.
For example, Colibri develops the Hummingbird Content Management System. This CMS is based on an open source project that is under active development by programmers around the world. By contributing to this project, Colibri brings this collective knowledge to the Valley and makes it available to local businesses. Hummingbird differs from many other systems. By separating content and presentation, the same content can be presented on a website just as easily as on a mobile app. This means customers can manage content as a resource
that is not tied to a particular presentation, so various content distribution channels stay in sync and minimize the management effort of a marketing team. Read provides this analogy, “A story can have many presentations, such as a song, a novel, a film or a play. If the story changes from a tragedy to a comedy, the content is changed in one spot, and all the presentations change accordingly.” This separation allows site owners to change their content easily and without the help of a website developer. A Hummingbird site is built with flexibility in mind. It
Colibri also runs contracted software development projects with local businesses. “To date we have taken on various contracted development projects with businesses from Halifax to Wolfville”, says Read. “We have experienced developers working with students to give a cost effective product development cycle using 'Agile' practices.” This gives students the opportunity to learn and experience a practical work environment. “Colibri Software is a great, relaxing, and exciting place to work,” states Acadia student Lourens Schep. “It has been a continuous learning environment with great workmates.” Sarah Padovani, Colibri Software info@colibri-software.com (902)585-1192 www.colibri-software.com 27 University Avenue Top Floor, Patterson Building, Acadia University

Rob Brezsny's
ARIES (March 21-April 19): These days you have a knack for reclamation and redemption, Aries. If anyone can put fun into what's dysfunctional, it's you. You may even be able to infuse neurotic cluelessness with a dose of erotic playfulness. So be confident in your ability to perform real magic in tight spots. Be alert for opportunities to transform messy irrelevancy into sparkly intrigue. By the way, how do you feel about the term "resurrection"? I suggest you strip away any previous associations you might have had, and be open to the possibility that you can find new meanings for it. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The game of tic-tac-toe is simple. Even young children can manage it. And yet there are 255,168 different ways for any single match to play out. The game of life has far more variables than tic-tac-toe, of course. I think that'll be good for you to keep in mind in the coming weeks. You may be tempted to believe that each situation you're dealing with can have only one or two possible outcomes, when in fact it probably has at least 255,168. Keep your options wide open. Brainstorm about unexpected possibilities. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Let's
turn our attention to the word "mortar." I propose that we use it to point out three influences you could benefit from calling on. Here are the definitions of "mortar": 1. a kind of cannon; 2. the plaster employed for binding bricks together; 3. a bowl where healing herbs are ground into powder. Now please meditate, Gemini, on anything you could do that might: 1. deflect your adversaries; 2. cement new unions; 3. make a container -- in other words, create a specific time and place -- where you will work on a cure for your suffering.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Nirvana's song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a mega-hit that sold well and garnered critical acclaim. But it had a difficult birth. When the band's leader Kurt Cobain first presented the raw tune to the band, bassist Krist Novoselic disliked it and called it "ridiculous." Cobain pushed back,
The Grapevine
For the week of August 16th forcing Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl to play it over and over again for an hour and a half. In the course of the ordeal, the early resistance dissolved. Novoselic and Grohl even added their own touches to the song's riffs. I foresee a similar process for you in the coming week, Cancerian. Give a long listen to an unfamiliar idea that doesn't grab you at first.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): One of
history's most notorious trials took place in Athens, Greece in 399 BCE. A majority of 501 jurors convicted the philosopher Socrates of impiety and of being a bad influence on young people. What were the impious things he did? "Failing to acknowledge the gods that the city acknowledges" and "introducing new deities." And so the great man was sentenced to death. This is a good reminder that just because many people believe something is true or valuable or important doesn't mean it is. That's especially crucial for you to keep in mind. You are in a phase when it might be wise and healthy to evade at least one popular trend. Groupthink is not your friend.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): With all the homework you've done lately, you've earned a lot of extra credit. So I'm thinking you'll get a decent grade in your unofficial "crash course" even if you're a bit sleepy during your final exam. But just in case, I'll provide you with a mini-cheat sheet. Here are the right answers to five of the most challenging test questions. 1. People who never break anything will never learn how to make lasting creations. 2. A mirror is not just an excellent tool for selfdefense, but also a tremendous asset in your quest for power over yourself. 3. The less you hide the truth, the smarter you'll be. 4. The well-disciplined shall inherit the earth. 5. You often meet your destiny on the road you took to avoid it. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The Hubble Space Telescope has taken 700,000 photos of deep space. Because it's able to record details that are impossible to capture from the earth's surface, it has dramatically enhanced astronomers' understanding of
the Stella Rose B & B
stars and galaxies. This miraculous technology got off to a rough start, however. Soon after its launch, scientists realized that there was a major flaw in its main mirror. Fortunately, astronauts were eventually able to correct the problem in a series of complex repair jobs. It's quite possible, Libra, that you will benefit from a Hubble-like augmentation of your vision in the next nine months. Right from the beginning, make sure there are no significant defects in the fundamentals of your big expansion.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): To some people, sweating is regarded as an indelicate act that should be avoided or hidden. But there are others for whom sweating is a sign of health and vigor. In Egyptian culture, for example, "How do you sweat?" is a common salutation. In the coming weeks, Scorpio, I encourage you to align yourself with the latter attitude. It won't be a time to try to impress anyone with how cool and dignified you are. Rather, success is more likely to be yours if you're not only eager to sweat but also willing to let people see you sweat. Exert yourself. Extend yourself. Show how much you care. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-
Dec. 21): "Whatever I take, I take too much or too little; I do not take the exact amount," wrote poet Antonio Porchia. "The exact amount is no use to me." I suggest you try adopting that bad-ass attitude in the coming days, Sagittarius. Be a bit contrarian, but with humor and style. Doing so would, I think, put you in sweet alignment with the impish nature of the vibes swirling in your vicinity. If you summon just the right amount of devil-may-care jauntiness, you'll be likely to get the most out of the cosmic jokes that will unfold.

now would be a good time to try changing your relationship with it. I can't say for sure that you'll be able to completely transform it overnight. But if you marshal a strong intention, you will be able to get the process underway.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You may have heard the theory that somewhere there is a special person who is your other half -- the missing part of you. In D. H. Lawrence's version of this fantasy, the two of you were a single angel that divided in two before you were born. Personally, I don't buy it. The experiences of everyone I've ever known suggest there are many possible soulmates for each of us. So here's my variation on the idea: Any good intimate relationship generates an "angel" -- a spirit that the two partners create together. This is an excellent time for you to try out this hypothesis, Aquarius. As you interact with your closest ally, imagine that a third party is with you: your mutual angel. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In
the coming weeks, you'll be wise to shed your emotional baggage and purge your useless worries and liberate yourself from your attachments to the old days and the old ways. In other words, clear out a lot of free, fresh space. And when you're finished doing that, Pisces, don't hide away in a dark corner feeing vulnerable and sensitive and stripped bare. Rather, situate yourself in the middle of a fertile hub and prepare to consort with new playmates, unexpected adventures, and interesting blessings. One of my readers, Reya Mellicker, sums up the right approach: "Be empty, not like the bowl put away in the cupboard, but like the bowl on the counter, cereal box above, waiting to receive."
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): What is the longest-running lie in your life? Maybe it's a deception you've worked long and hard to hide. Maybe it's a delusion you've insisted on believing in. Or perhaps it's just a wish you keep thinking will come true one day even though there's scant evidence it ever will. Whatever that big drain on your energy is, Capricorn, 611 Main St. • Wolfville's newest 4-1/2 star B&B

THE CROSSWORD
I
’m an Elvis fan! The music, the movies, the sequined jumpsuits and the legend of Elvis Presley have been an interest of mine since I can remember. On August 16th ,1977 the world received the sad news that Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n’ Roll had passed away at home in his Graceland Mansion in Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis changed the face of 20th century pop culture with his music, his showmanship and his humanitarian efforts and people can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when the heartbreaking news of his death came across the air waves. Elvis is still loved by millions of people around the world and his influence on today’s artists has never been stronger. Elvis, even in death, still appears each year on the top ten list of money making entertainers. To mark the 35th anniversary of his passing, World Champion Elvis Tribute Artist Thane Dunn and his eight piece band, The Cadillac Kings, will be celebrating the life and music of the King with their new show “Remembering Elvis” on Saturday September 8th at the Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre in Windsor. I have seen Thane perform three times before and he is nothing short of amazing! Thane has become widely regarded as one of the very best Elvis tribute artists in the business. He is the full Elvis package folks, from his natural resemblance and uncanny vocals and choreography to his ability to mesmerize his audiences and create the illusion that you are seeing the real Elvis Presley. Even people who have seen the real King in concert say that Thane’s depiction was like seeing him all over again and I can safely say that I have seen the next best

thing to the man himself. This new show will be filled with many of your Elvis favorites like Love Me Tender, In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds and Thane will even perform some of Elvis’s great gospel songs. All of Thane’s costumes are exact replicas of the elaborate jumpsuits popularized by Presley in the seventies and if you love Elvis or just love to be entertained then this is the show for you. Check out thanedunn. net for tour details, photos and information or view Thane’s youtube videos for a glimpse at this truly unique performer. Tickets for Thane’s show are available at Box of Delights bookstore on Main Street, Wolfville and at Windsor Home Hardware or online at ticketpro. ca. And Thane wants to stress that this is a family show and a great way to introduce your kids to the music and persona of Elvis Presley. And your show ticket also gets you entry into the Hants County Exhibition from Septemeber 14-16th or September 21-23rd for only $5.00. Don’t head to Heartbreak Hotel, Don’t be Cruel to yourself and don’t be a Devil in Disguise, instead, have a Little Less Conversation, grab your Blue Suede Shoes, and VIVA LAS VEGAS with the Thane Dunn Elvis tribute show in Windsor! Chicken and Peach Souvlaki
From Jenny Osburn of Union Street Cafe • www.localfoodlover@blogspot.com
B
eing a food lover and feeding children can be hard. I remember Molly sitting in her highchair eating bits of duck confit and roasted asparagus, me thinking that she would always appreciate what I put on her plate. Somewhere along the way things fell apart and now we're all kind of relieved when it's pizza night and no one complains about dinner. One night last week I thought up this lovely take on souvlaki. Peaches and basil are a great combination, and both are peaking right now in the heat of the Annapolis Valley. I can't say that my children loved grilled peaches, but I think you will!
Chicken and Peach Souvlaki • 1 pound boneless Chicken Breast or thighs • Juice of 1 Lemon • 3 tablespoons Olive Oil • 2 cloves Garlic, minced • 2 Green Onions, chopped • 2 tablespoons chopped Fresh Basil • 1 teaspoon Salt • a few grinds of Black Pepper • 6 nearly ripe Peaches
Cut the chicken into 1 inch cubes. Place the chicken in a bowl and add the lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, green onions, basil, salt and pepper. Stir to combine and let marinate for an hour (or overnight) in the refrigerator. Soak 8 bamboo skewers in cold water to cover. Cut the peaches in half and dig out the pits, then cut in half again. Thread chicken and peaches alternating on the skewers. Preheat barbecue to medium heat and grill skewers until chicken is cooked through, about 20 minutes.

Who's Who: Paul Abela : A Class Act!
Dear Paul, I have crossed your path many times; in stores, on the street, seen you before, during and after a play you’ve been in or I’ve been in but I’ve never had the chance to work with you.... Let’s do that sometime please. I enjoy your work and I hear you have a new show.... maybe you could be a Who’s Who for the Grapevine sometime.....
Paul Abela grew up in Scarborough, Ontario (isn’t that where the fair is?) and thoroughly enjoyed the cultural wonderland of a neighborhood he lived in. He and a lot of his friends were first generation Canadian kids whose parents came from many parts of the world. In Paul’s case, his mom is English (like the muffins) and his father was Maltese (like the falcon) and the kids he played road hockey with had parents from Italy, many eastern European countries, Jamaica, as well as a number of “going down the road” east coast Canadian families that had come in the 50’s and 60’s. Paul’s mother, brother and sister continue to live in Ontario, giving him a good excuse to visit. But why is he here? Well, Paul is an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department at Acadia University. His education path was long and adventurous, offering him the good fortune to be educated, and teach, in a number of countries but he and his wife were more
than happy to move to Nova Scotia in 2001, as Paul had lived in many large cities for a number of years and had hoped, one day, to settle in a smaller place. He longed for a keener sense of community and couldn’t have done better than finding a log cabin home in the wonderful town of Scot’s Bay to raise his daughter. In addition to challenging his students with the best of Plato, Aristotle and Kant, off-campus Paul has been interested in the local arts community. He had done a bit of theatre as an undergrad at the University of Toronto and was delighted to find CentreStage in Kentville, which Paul calls “the very best in community theatre”. He performed in their productions of Arsenic and Old Lace, The Mousetrap, On Golden Pond and 12 Angry Jurors. As well, Paul took on the role of Director for last year’s Dial M For Murder and now you can see Paul in CenteStage’s latest production of
Fluoride-free H2O coming soon? Wolville, it’s up to you! I n 1959 Wolfville began adding fluoride to the town water system to prevent tooth decay. Yet many of us who arrived in Wolfville in the following five decades never imagined we were drinking fluoridated water; many residents are probably still unaware of the practice.
Most Canadians don’t drink fluoridated water (Health Canada); other municipalities have decided to end the practice (Calgary, 2011). World health stats show that while tooth decay rates have declined in fluoridated areas, relatively the same reduction in decay can be found in areas where fluoride was never introduced (and does not occur naturally). Why? Better nutrition and dental education policies; accessibility to free dental care for children; dental offices in rural centres and access to fluoride toothpaste have all contributed, no doubt. But equally important questions for us as a community are: Is this mandatory medication, without dosage control? Or do
we really believe that everyone drinks the same amount of water daily? Large-quantity water drinkers (e.g. training athletes, infants on formula, diabetics) are at risk of receiving “doses” which even regulatory agencies consider problematic. Can we name one other example where whole communities are medicated— without choice? In the era when Wolfville began the practice, governments were told that ingesting fluoride in water (systemic) was the best route. Now it is generally agreed that strategic direct contact with the tooth surface (topical) is the most effective. And the safest. Scientific research since 2000 has brought the toxicity of fluoride (for water systems) to the fore. A common source of this fluoride is actually a hazardous waste byproduct of the fertilizer industry. A range of possible health concerns—from bone brittling to thyroid disfunction— suggests that governments reassess the safety of this practice. A letter to
this effect has been sent to the Wolfville Town Council and Staff asking for a review of the 50-yearold decision in the light of current scientific evidence, with the intent of becoming a fluoridefree water utility once again. The book, The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There by Connett, Beck and Micklem has been purchased for Town Council and Staff use, and “10 Facts about Fluoride” from their site www.fluoridealert. org/ also shared. Please help us support our local government to reverse an outdated and now ill-advised decision. Use available resources to “get the real facts on fluoride” and then write to Council with your concerns. This is an election year! Find out where Council candidates stand on this important health issue. For Fluoride-Free H2O-Wolfville: 542-5157 / blueheron@greatisland. ca (Susan Hauer).

Same Time Next Year, a romantic comedy about a man and a woman and their 25 year affair. This play has been a delightful but intense challenge for Paul. Doing over a thousand lines of dialogue with only one other actor (the incredible Sherrie Howatt) has been a lot of fun, hard work and audiences have been praising the two leads for their work. Same Time Next Year plays Friday and Saturday evenings from August 16th to September 1st. Visit www. centrestagetheatre.ca for show times, details and cast bios. Don’t miss this great show and Paul’s great performance! .... And in closing; good luck with the show and all the best with future productions (Virginia Woolf??). Think about that who’s who profile... I think it would be fun! Take care Paul, Mike Butler Brought to you by

Brought to you by: Daniels’ Flower Shop Ltd. 40 Water St, Windsor 798-5337 www.danielsflowershop.com I need to briefly mention that I am currently living abroad in a country where “laborers” are living well below the poverty line…. While driving home from the city a few days ago - after losing my wallet - I was lucky enough to blow a tire on the side of the road! With no idea what to do, I exited the car and assessed the situation. This is when a small man, a laborer, offering assistance approached me. This
man was visibly exhausted but he still walked across the dusty highway to help me! He called me a tow truck and a cab, sat with me and bought me tea while I waited. I was so humbled by this experience and ashamed of how very easy it is to be dismissive of men in his situation. This man who had so little took the time to help me, I can only hope that I will have the chance to return the favor very soon. ~ Sarah M.
