Bloom - A Special Invitation for You Join us on Tuesday, May 7th from 11am to 1pm at Wolfville’s Acadia Festival Theatre for a celebration of Bloom; Wolfville’s new identity!

The celebration is comprised of two key components:

“Bloom” is Wolfville’s first pan-town identity. Every person and everything in Wolfville seems to have or portray the same attitude about Wolfville: the best time to be in Wolfville is not yesterday and not tomorrow, but today. There is an overwhelming sense from those in Wolfville, from college freshmen to “lifers” that the town has matured perfectly and is ready to be enjoyed by all.

11am to 1pm - A Wolfville Showcase featuring local businesses and partners who contribute to the unique experience that is Wolfville.

12:noon to 12:30pm - A thirty minute stage performance, produced by Jeremy Webb, designed to tell the Wolfville brand story featuring the faces, voices, talent and creativity of Wolfville.

Mark your calendars and join us May 7th at 11am. There will be free refreshments, wonderful entertainment and lots of excitement. Celebrate Wolfville with us!

"Bloom" is a graphic representation of a vibrant town with a proud past and an optimistic future. The shape is a nod to the significance of the flower. Without a flower there is no fruit. Without fruit, there is no Wolfville. The colours are for earth, plants, sea and sky.

For further information: David Hovell, Executive Director Wolfville Business Development Corporation. 542-4093 / dhovell@ downtownwolfville.com

Altogether, "Bloom" is a confident statement that Wolfville has arrived and is ready to lead the Annapolis Valley into the future.

The Literacy Mile The Valley Community Learning Association’s annual fundraising event, the Literacy Mile, is Saturday, May 11th, 1-3pm at 49 Cornwallis St., Kentville. The VCLA is a non-profit organization that helps adults to achieve their personal learning goals. For a small organization, the VCLA is having a major impact on the lives and futures of many Annapolis Valley residents. In the last year, over 350 learners participated in VCLA's diverse programs. Some studied for their GED so they can find work, some improved literacy skills so they can keep their job, some wanted to read to their children, or study the Drivers Handbook to be able to get their driver's license, or just be able to read their own mail. The Literacy Mile event is an opportunity to raise awareness of and support for the literacy needs of Valley residents, celebrate the accomplishments of learners and recognize the community support, financial and in-kind, received throughout the year. There will be hot dogs and refreshments for sale, live music, a silent auction, a bake sale and activities for the whole family. For further information, call 679-5252 or 866-898-7323, or email vcla@eastlink.ca.

rowing up in the Annapolis Valley I have had my share of fun! People who are new to the area (and some who are not) often ask me what they can do with their families in the Valley. I would rhyme off a few ideas, usually with the response, "How do you know??" I just like collecting information! My background is in public relations and event planning. I have done a lot of fundraising and grant writing to help build the playgrounds in both Port Williams and the new KCA school in Kentville. As the CBC Information Morning Community Contact for Kentville it is my job to keep an eye on the news for Kentville and to find out what is going on. I am a writer- for the Acadia Alumni Bulletin, and this past fall I researched and wrote the Kentville ghost walks. Primarily though, I am also a stay-at-home mom (who doesn't stay at home!) for Daniel (6) and Thomas (4). All of these roles

make me interested in knowing what's going on in the Valley! This made me realize that there isn't one central place to look for information and activities related to families living in the Annapolis Valley. There are so many awesome things to see and do all across this beautiful Valley that I thought I would share the things I've discovered with you, so you can enjoy them too! With thanks to my sister, Sharon, who created the Valley Family Fun website and my brother-in-law Steve for the logo, we were able to launch it a year ago, in January. Between Facebook and the e-news subscribers we now have over 2000 followers, and are still growing! Thanks for sharing the word with others! - Laura Churchill, valleyfamilyfun@gmail.com

VITIS Mobile Winery Services VITIS Mobile Winery Services is a small business that was started Fall 2012 in the Valley by recent Acadia graduate Thomas Grégoire. Funded by a provincial Productivity and Innovation voucher, Thomas and his friends are looking into ways to help maintain the current boom that's occurring in our wine industry, to solidify our international status as an emerging major wine region. Two main areas of ongoing research involve: the feasibility of constructing and operating a mobile wine bottling unit through collaboration with ACSBE; and an experimental grape cultivar trial using more natural, organic alternatives for soil amendments, conducted here in the K.C. Irving Center. The VITIS team will be at the Irving Centre Native Plant Sale (Saturday, 9am-12noon in the Gardens), discussing their projects and selling organically grown grape vines and culinary herbs. The Grapevine For the week of May 2nd, 2013

Rob Brezsny's

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Are

you afraid that you lack a crucial skill or aptitude? Do you have a goal that you're worried might be impossible to achieve because of this inadequacy? If so, now is a good time to make plans to fill in the gap. If you formulate such an intention, you will attract a benevolent push from the cosmos. Why spend another minute fretting about the consequences of your ignorance when you have more power than usual to correct that ignorance?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20):

Imagine you're in a large room full of costumes. It's like a masquerade store at Halloween plus a storage area where a theater troupe keeps the apparel its actors use to stage a wide variety of historical plays. You have free reign here. You can try on different masks and wigs and disguises and getups. You can envision yourself living in different eras as various characters. If you like, you can even go out into the world wearing your alternate identities. Try this exercise, Taurus. It'll stimulate good ideas about some new self-images you might want to play with in real life.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Ray

LaMontagne sings these lyrics in his tune "Empty": "I looked my demons in the eyes. Laid bare my chest and said, 'Do your best to destroy me. I've been to hell and back so many times, I must admit you kind of bore me.'" I wouldn't be opposed to you delivering a message like that to your own demons, Gemini -- with one caveat: Leave out the "Do your best to destroy me" part. Simply peer into the glazed gaze of those shabby demons and say, "You bore me and I'm done with you. Byebye." And then walk away from them for good.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): I know a devotee of Tibetan Buddhism who got an unexpected message from her teacher. He told her she has made such exemplary progress in her quest for enlightenment that she has earned the ultimate reward. When she dies many years from now, the teacher said, she will enter nirvana! She will have no further karmic obligation to reincarnate into a new

body in the future, and will be forever excused from the struggle of living in the material world. Although her teacher meant this to be good news, she was heartbroken. She wants to keep reincarnating. Her joyous passion is to help relieve the suffering of her fellow humans. Can you guess what sign she is? Yes: a Cancerian. Like her, many of you are flirting with an odd and challenging choice between selfishness and selflessness.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): A lawyer

named John Keogh filed an application with the Australian Patent Office. It was for a "circular transportation facilitation device." His claim was approved. He thus became the owner of the world's first and only patent for the wheel. So far, he has not tried to collect royalties from anyone who's using wheels. I nominate him to be your role model, Leo. May he inspire you to stamp your personal mark on a universal archetype or put your unique spin on something everyone knows and loves.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): This may be the best week in a long time to practice the art of crazy wisdom. And what is crazy wisdom? Here's how novelist Tom Robbins described it to Shambhala Sun: It's "a philosophical worldview that recommends swimming against the tide, cheerfully seizing the short end of the stick, embracing insecurity, honoring paradox, courting the unexpected, celebrating the unfamiliar, shunning orthodoxy, volunteering for tasks nobody else wants or dares to do, and breaking taboos in order to destroy their power. It’s the wisdom of those who turn the tables on despair by lampooning it, and who neither seek authority nor submit to it." And why should you do any of that weird stuff? Robbins: "To enlarge the soul, light up the brain, and liberate the spirit." LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): "Why

should we honor those that die upon the field of battle?" asked Irish poet William Butler Yeats. "A man may show as reckless a courage in entering into the abyss of himself." A woman may show similar bravery, of course. In my astrological opinion, that's the noble adventure beckoning to

you, Libra: a dive into the depths of your inner workings. I hope that's the direction you go; I hope you don't take your stouthearted struggle out into the world around you. All the best action will be happening in that fertile hub known as your "soul."

you borrow the spirit of that arrangement and invoke it in your own life. In other words, be highly civilized and smartly sophisticated part of the time; be wild and free the rest of the time. And be ready to go back and forth between the two modes with grace and ease.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Historical records suggest that ancient Greek philosopher Democritus went blind late in his life. There are different stories about why. According to one account, he intentionally did it to himself by gazing too long into the sun. That was his perverse way of solving a vexing problem: It freed him from the torment of having to look upon gorgeous women who were no longer interested in or available to him because of his advanced age. I hope you won't do anything like that, Scorpio. In fact, I suggest you take the opposite approach: Keep your attention focused on things that stir your deep attraction, even if you think you can't have them for your own. Valuable lessons and unexpected rewards will emerge from such efforts.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In the wild, a tiger's diet consists entirely of meat. The big cat loves to feast on deer and wild boar, and eats a variety of other animals, too. The hunt is always solitary, never done in collaborative groups. That's why the creature's success rate is so low. A tiger snags the prey it's seeking only about five percent of the time. It sometimes has to wait two weeks between meals. Nevertheless, a tiger rarely starves. When it gets what it's after, it can devour 75 pounds of food in one sitting. According to my astrological analysis, Aquarius, you're like a tiger these days. You haven't had a lot of lucky strikes lately, but I suspect you will soon hit the jackpot.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-

Dec. 21): Search your memory, Sagittarius, and recall a time when you pushed yourself to your limits as you labored over a task you cared about very much. At that time, you worked with extreme focus and intensity. You were rarely bored and never resentful about the enormous effort you had to expend. You loved throwing yourself into this test of willpower, which stretched your resourcefulness and compelled you to grow new capacities. What was that epic breakthrough in your past? Once you know, move on to your next exercise: Imagine a new assignment that fits this description, and make plans to bring it into your life in the near future.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The

French word Flaneur is a meme that refers to a person who strolls around the city at a leisurely pace, exploring whatever captivates her imagination. To the casual observer, the Flaneur may seem to be a lazy time-waster with nothing important to do. But she is in fact motivated by one of the noblest emotions -- pure curiosity -- and is engaged in a quest to attract novel experiences, arouse fresh insights, and seek new meaning. Sound fun? Well, congratulations, Pisces, because you have been selected as the Flaming Flaneur of the Zodiac for the next two weeks. Get out there and meander! Homework: What's the single most important question you have to find an answer for in the next five years? Deliver your best guess to me at Freewillastrology.com

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Nairobi is Kenya's capital and home of over three million urbanites. A few minutes' drive from the city center, there's a 45-square-mile national park teeming with wildlife. Against a backdrop of skyscrapers, rhinos and giraffes graze. Lions and cheetahs pounce. Wildebeests roam and hyenas skulk. I suggest

The first is an original production called ‘The Stories You Won’t Hear’ being performed at Horton High School May 9th-11th. 'The Stories You Won't Hear' is created by past and present students of Wolfville Middle School. Featuring music from the hit television show ’Glee’, the students bring to the stage; skits, monologues, songs, and stories about what it's really like to be in middle school. Touching, funny, and entertaining, the show is sure to please with tales of love and heartache, a little sadness and confusion but lots of joy and excitement, with some of the top pop songs on the radio today. Performances will be at Horton High School Performance Centre: Thursday, May 9, Friday, May 10 & Saturday, May 11 at 7pm. And admission is only $5.00. You can purchase tickets at the door or call 690-7260 or email wolfvilleschoolstories@gmail.com. Should be a great show!

their upcoming production of Peter Pan? It’s getting so much advanced buzz and for good reason. This timeless tale about the boy who never grew up and his adventures in Neverland is sure to be a huge production with stimulating performances and the same grandeur of previous year’s offerings from Stage prophets.

have said it many times before that the talent in this area is mind-boggling! I have worked with singers, dancers, actors, costume makers, production designers, writers and directors etc. during a lot of productions and it blows me away what the Valley has to offer. And if you’ve seen some of the shows I’ve been in, you’ll know that the bulk of the group I just mentioned are ages 6-16! That’s right; they’re kids and young adults. Many of the faces you’ve seen in Fezziwig shows, Stage Prophet Productions and Wolfville School plays are gracing the stage again in two upcoming shows that I think everyone should attend.

Creamy Carrot Soup with Lemongrass & Fiddleheads - Dan Collins, Chef @ Art Can Cafe, Canning Spring is finally cooperating with the early season harvest that nature is kind enough to provide. Although most of these are ephemeral and last a very short time, it is a sure sign of the beginning of the bounty of local product which we are blessed with. One of these celebrated items is the fiddlehead fern which is mostly gathered wild from forest floors, setting it apart from easy to cultivate and harvest garden offerings. In this recipe, fiddleheads serve mainly as the garnish on this wonderful soup, offering a lovely contrast in colour and texture, but more can be added to the soup if desired. With warmer weather upon us, this soup is delicious chilled, but can also be heated for a chilly or damp day. Fiddleheads are best when soaked in salted water, then steamed until completely tender, about 12 to 15 minutes.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • •

3 medium carrots, peeled and chopped 1 inch long 2 inch piece of lemongrass, minced finely 3 1/2 cups fresh carrot juice 1 tsp butter 1 tsp honey pinch curry powder 1/2 cup heavy cream salt fresh ground white pepper 1/2 cup steamed fiddleheads kalonji seeds (available at East Indian grocery on Robie St, Hfx.) mousse 1/4 cup creme fraiche sprig of tarragon, minced

Combine carrots, lemongrass, 2 cups carrot juice, butter, honey and curry. Simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low simmer until the liquid is mostly gone and carrots are tender, about one hour. Add cream, increase heat for 3 minutes, then puree with remaining 1 1/2 cups carrot juice in a blender, then pass through a strainer, season to taste, refridgerate. Ladel soup into chilled bowls, top with mousse, a few fiddleheads, and a pinch of kalonji seeds. Enjoy the taste of spring!

Who's Who: Liana vanderhof-Rhodenizer: Picture Perfect!

W

hat a fun and random life I lead sometimes. I was walking down Central Avenue a few weeks ago and ran into a friend of mine who was taking part in a photo shoot. I pulled her right out of a shot so I could hug her and have a reunion of sorts… the photographer gave me a weird once over and I apologized and went on my merry way, thinking I would never have the chance to make it up to her for disrupting her shoot. Well, ladies and gentleman, that photographer was Liana vanderhof-Rhodenizer, and here’s me making it up to her. Liana grew up in the beautiful Annapolis Valley; she’s married and has two adorable children (9 year old Kalana and 14 month old baby boy Hudson). Liana works full time at Holland Home Leisure in New Minas, as manager of the Hot Tub and Patio Furniture Divisions. This has been her “day job” for the last eight years and she loves the work she does.

hold your horses! Liana is also a wonderful photographer. She has always had a love for photography and a true passion for the way a camera can capture a moment and make it last forever. Liana says “I am a strong believer in following dreams, making time for yourself and doing what you love! Photography started as a hobby, and it turned into a passion and the passion turned into L. Rhodenizer Photography!”

Liana plans to keep growing her business and learning more about the art of photography and seeing where it takes her. Suspended Coffees at Kate's Pantry Kate Adams and her customers are implementing the concept of suspended coffees at her Berwick fair trade coffee shop. Not a new idea, but one that is enjoying a resurgence, suspended coffees are purchased by customers for Kate to hold for someone who cannot afford a coffee that day. So I might buy my own yummy North Mountain java and add a suspended coffee to my bill for someone else later in the day. Kate often gives free coffees and this is a way for her customers to share in the generosity. Suspended coffees are just one of many ways that people in the Berwick area show that they care. Perhaps all of our coffee shops could implement this easy idea. ~ Mardi Burton
