Boo is a
black beauty who was rescued by a kind lady in Wolfville and needs a loving home! She is even more beautiful now than when this picture was taken. She has a gorgeous long black coat and is approximately 2 years old. She is very affectionate and would love a chance in a new forever home after being here for nearly a year.
If last year’s dance was any indication, a throng of revellers will caper and cavort inside a hall brimming with fantastic costumes and a melodious, devilish din, as these drum-driven musical alchemists pluck refrains from the ghostly ether of top forty radios past, infuse them with the divine madness of Irish fiddle tunes and, wielding the power of the lightning harnessed by mad sound scientist Andy Flinn, brew a potent potion of pop song heaven … all while the waxing moon casts its wraithlike light far into the silent shroud of a harvest night.

Or, in other words, this should be a really good time. Come as yourself, or as someone else! For more information call 697-2271. This is a licensed event, and costumes are adored! - just like our new songs. Tickets are $12 advance (available from Box of Delights), $15 at the door.

n Sunday, October 27th, L’Arche Homefires will be celebrating the first step in the realization of a dream that has been years in the making as they accept ownership of St. John’s Anglican Church Hall on Main Street Wolfville. “It began with a request from our core members in 2007, says Ingrid Blais, Director of L’Arche Homefires. “Our core members needed a space where they could work together that was safer and more accessible. The burgeoning craft business that provides core members of L’Arche Homefires with employment opportunities was also running out of room. “In our current shop, our looms are jammed in the back with barely enough room, says Christina Tanner, Building Committee member and skilled weaver whose beautiful creations are sold in the Applewicks store front. The
candle-making operation is even more cramped and is located in the basement, therefore not accessible to people with mobility challenges. Another important request of the core members was to find a new home and working space that would still be in the heart of Wolfville. “For the past 31 years, the community of Wolfville has opened their arms to L’Arche and our core members greatly appreciate the opportunity to be part of the vibrant activity on Main Street Wolfville, says Ingrid. “This goes to the heart of L’Arche and was Jean Vanier’s vision for people with disabilities from the beginning– the dream of acceptance and inclusion for all people –that we all benefit from being together and sharing our gifts. The L’Arche Board began

researching the project two years ago with plans to build a new facility on a vacant lot in Wolfville. Renowned architect, Syd Dumaresq quickly jumped on board and offered to donate architectural designs for the project. The Dumaresq family, over the course of five generations, has long ties to Wolfville. They have contributed to the beauty of Wolfville’s Main Street and the Acadia campus designing numerous buildings including the War Memorial Gymnasium and Patterson Hall, as well as many other famous and award-winning buildings in Nova Scotia. When the Anglican Church Hall became available, the project took a positive turn. “The opportunity to renovate a much valued community space was one that we couldn’t pass up, says Sandy Fraser, Chair of the of their Trick-or-Eat campaign. On an evening where we spend money to give away candy for free, please take the time to have a look in your cupboard and help stop Hunger by donating a nonperishable food item. Students will be collecting donations at Superstore in New Minas on Sunday October 28th from 10-3 as well as at the Wolfville Farmers'
Homefires Board and ‘Dream Team’ project team. “We believe we can undertake a much more affordable project, strengthen community partnerships, and give a new life to an old and unsustainable building. The Anglican Church community has been delighted to partner with L’Arche. The community and a host of VIP guests have been invited to join with L’Arche core members and staff at an Open House reception at the current location at Applewicks (10 Gaspereau Avenue) at 10am followed by a blessing and celebration at the church hall (341 Main Street) at 11am. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Food at the Center of a Nutrition and Dietetics Curriculum
F
aculty from Acadia’s School of Nutrition and Dietetics (SND) are working together with students and community members in creative ways to bring food back to the center of the nutrition and dietetics curriculum. As scientific knowledge about nutrition grew, our focus shifted away from food to nutrients and their functional roles in health and disease. Although an appreciation for the role of nutrients in overall health is important, the working philosophy of the SND is that we should not lose sight of the importance of connecting with and through food. Faculty members are building opportunities for students to learn about food as the foundation of the work of any nutrition professional, including dietitians. Finding opportunities to link food and nutrition is increasingly important, as we observe that many students enter the Nutrition and Dietetics program with minimal knowledge of food or food preparation. At a presentation of our philosophy at the 2012 Dietitians of Canada conference, we learned from colleagues at universities and internship sites across Canada that this phenomenon is not unique to our program at Acadia University. ABRN Symposium participants enjoy the fruits of their efforts. Photo: Catherine Morley (Oct. '12) In addition to course work and projects, faculty members are creating other unique opportunities to bring people together around food. As part of the Arts-Based Research Network Symposium (a cross-disciplinary event that included the Acadia Faculties of Arts, Professional Studies, and Science, and community members, and funded through a Harrison McCain Foundation Award), Dr. Catherine Morley organized a collaborative food event where the participants all contributed to preparing lunch and enjoyed eating together. It was a superb example of building community through food.

Rob Brezsny's
(march 21-april 19): In the coming days, many of your important tasks will be best accomplished through caginess and craftiness. Are you willing to work behind the scenes and beneath the surface? I suspect you will have a knack for navigating your way skillfully and luckily through mazes and their metaphorical equivalents. The mists may very well part at your command, revealing clues that no one else but you can get access to. You might also have a talent for helping people to understand elusive or difficult truths. Halloween costume suggestions: spy, stage magician, ghost whisperer, exorcist. (april 20-may 20): The coming week could have resemblances to the holiday known as Opposite Day. Things people say may have meanings that are different or even contrary to what they supposedly mean. Qualities you usually regard as liabilities might temporarily serve as assets, and strengths could seem problematical or cause confusion. You should also be wary of the possibility that the advice you get from people you trust may be misleading. For best results, make liberal use of reverse psychology, freaky logic, and mirror magic. Halloween costume suggestion: the opposite of who you really are. (may 21-June 20): I don't have a big problem with your tendency to contradict yourself. I'm rarely among the consistency freaks who would prefer you to stick with just one of your many selves instead of hopscotching among all nine. In fact, I find your multi-level multiplicity interesting and often alluring. I take it as a sign that you are in alignment with the fundamentally paradoxical nature of life. Having

said all that, however, I want to alert you to an opportunity that the universe is currently offering you, which is to feel unified, steady, and stable. Does that sound even vaguely enticing? Why not try it out for a few weeks? Halloween costume suggestion: an assemblage or collage of several of your different personas.
success, ask yourself the following question on a regular basis: Is what you think you're seeing really there or is it mostly a projection of your expectations and theories? Halloween costume suggestions: a lie detector, an interrogator with syringes full of truth serum, a superhero with X-ray vision, a lab scientist.
CAnCER (June 21-July 22): An avocado tree may produce so much fruit that the sheer weight of its exuberant creation causes it to collapse. Don't be like that in the coming weeks, Cancerian. Without curbing your luxuriant mood, simply monitor your outpouring of fertility so that it generates just the right amount of beautiful blooms. Be vibrant and bountiful and fluidic, but not unconstrained or overwrought or recklessly lavish. Halloween costume suggestion: a bouquet, an apple tree, a rich artist, or an exotic dancer with a bowl of fruit on your head.
(Sept. 23-oct. 22): I am officially protesting you, Libra. I am staging a walkout and mounting a demonstration and launching a boycott unless you agree to my demand. And yes, I have just one demand: that you take better care of the neglected, disempowered, and underprivileged parts of your life. Not a year from now; not when you have more leisure time; NOW! If and when you do this, I predict the arrival of a flood of personal inspiration. Halloween costume suggestion: a symbolic representation of a neglected, disempowered, or underprivileged part of your life.
LEo (July 23-aug. 22): I hope
your father didn't beat you or scream at you or molest you. If he did, I am so sorry for your suffering. I also hope that your father didn't ignore you or withhold his best energy from you. I hope he didn't disappear for weeks at a time and act oblivious to your beauty. If he did those things, I mourn for your loss. Now it's quite possible that you were spared such mistreatment, Leo. Maybe your dad gave you conscientious care and loved you for who you really are. But whatever the case might be, this is the right time to acknowledge it. If you're one of the lucky ones, celebrate to the max. If you're one of the wounded ones, begin or renew your quest for serious and intensive healing. Halloween costume suggestion: your father.
(aug. 23-Sept. 22): Do you know how to tell the difference between superstitious hunches and dependable intuitions? Are you good at distinguishing between mediocre gossip that's only ten percent accurate and reliable rumors that provide you with the real inside dope? I suspect that you will soon get abundant opportunities to test your skill in these tasks. To increase the likelihood of your

(oct. 23-nov. 21): "It's so fine and yet so terrible to stand in front of a blank canvas," said French painter Paul Cezanne. Many writers make similar comments about the excruciating joy they feel when first sitting down in front of an empty page. For artists in any genre, in fact, getting started may seem painfully impossible. And yet there can also be a delicious anticipation as the ripe chaos begins to coalesce into coherent images or words or music. Even if you're not an artist, Scorpio, you're facing a comparable challenge in your own chosen field. Halloween costume suggestion: a painter with a blank canvas. (nov. 22-dec. 21): As you contemplate what you want to be for Halloween, don't consider any of the following options: a thoroughbred racehorse wearing a blindfold; a mythic centaur clanking around in iron boots; a seahorse trying to dance on dry land. For that matter, Sagittarius, I hope you won't come close to imitating any of those hapless creatures even in your non-Halloween life. It's true that the coming days will be an excellent time to explore, analyze, and deal with your limitations.

But that doesn't mean you should be overwhelmed and overcome by them. Halloween costume suggestions: Houdini, an escaped prisoner, a snake molting its skin. (dec. 22-Jan. 19): "Does anyone know where I can find dinosaur costumes for cats?" asked a Halloween shopper on Reddit.com. In the comments section, someone else said that he needed a broccoli costume for his Chihuahua. I bring this up, Capricorn, because if anyone could uncover the answers to these questions, it would be you. You've got a magic touch when it comes to hunting down solutions to unprecedented problems. Halloween costume suggestion: a cat wearing a dinosaur costume. (Jan. 20-feb. 18): The Live Monarch Foundation made a video on how to fix a butterfly's broken wing (tinyurl. com/FixWing). It ain't easy. You need ten items, including tweezers, talcum powder, toothpicks, and glue. You've got to be patient and summon high levels of concentration. But it definitely can be done. The same is true about the delicate healing project you've thought about attempting on your own wound, Aquarius. It will require you to be ingenious, precise, and tender, but I suspect you're primed to rise to the challenge. Halloween costume suggestion: herbalist, acupuncturist, doctor, shaman, or other healer. (feb. 19-march 20): It's not a good time to wear SuperControl Higher-Power Spanx, or any other girdle, corset, or restrictive garment. In fact, I advise you not to be a willing participant in any situation that pinches, hampers, or confines you. You need to feel exceptionally expansive. In order to thrive, you've got to give yourself permission to spill over, think big, and wander freely. As for those people who might prefer you to keep your unruly urges in check and your natural inclinations concealed: Tell them your astrologer authorized you to seize a massive dose of slack. Halloween costume suggestions: a wild man or wild woman; a mythical bird like the Garuda or Thunderbird; the god or goddess of abundance.

Enjoy! beautiful fall If you have colors in the no parental trees or the responsibilities cold mornings Photo by James Skinner for Hallowe'en didn’t clue me night or the in, then seeing the store shelves nights prior to it, you can always lined with Halloween costumes attend the Halloween DJ Dance and candy sure did. at the Wolfville Legion on Because I do tons of theatre, you’d Saturday October 27th from 9pm-1am for only $5. That same think that dressing up so much night Tripalady will be playing throughout the year would kill at the Old Orchard Inn for their the spirit of Hallowe'en for me, fifth year Hallowe'en Dance right? Well, you’re wrong! If anyCelebration starting at 9pm. Both thing, it makes it more exciting events encourage costumes! On because I have others around me October 27th, 30th, and 31st, the who dress up too. As well, I have Wolfville Gravely Ghost Walk will four nephews and a niece who be ambling through town; meet at relish the idea of dressing up and the clock tower by 8:15 and these getting candy, and their excitewalks are extra spooky so beware! ment is infectious. And being a Safety Uncle, I am constantly looking out for their well-being, especially on nights like Halloween.
What are your plans for October 31st? For parents and trick or treater chaperones; enjoy the evening and dive into it with the young kids. Get dressed up, go out with them and get involved, teach them about safety and proper behaviour and be part of the experience with them. Take them out for a while, don’t overdo it on the candy, then come home and go through their loot with them and then maybe watch a “scary” movie with them before bed. For teenagers, have fun and don’t be stupid! It sickens me when I hear the horror stories of vandalism and idiotic behaviour the next day so don’t do anything but get candy and get home. Parents of teenagers... set some stern rules and know where your child is going!
Planning to stay in for the night? Well, between the ding and the dong of the doorbell, why not watch a scary movie. I recommend an Alfred Hitchcock classic like Psycho or The Birds, older classics like Cape Fear, Night of the Hunter or the 1968 Night of the Living Dead or check out The Descent, The Ring, The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street (1980) or my all time favorite horror flick, ironically the original Hallowe'en! BOO!!! Did I get you that time...??? No? Fine.... Maybe next year! ~Mike Butler

olded into lemony muffins, baked into stuffing, stirred into freshly toasted granola and garnishing a spinach salad: we have come up with many uses for the tasty little cranberry. It's all for good reason. Cranberries are beautiful, nutritious and, around here, plentiful. In fact, cranberries grow wild around Nova Scotian brooks and streams and have become an important crop in the Annapolis Valley since at least the 1940s, when the first commercial harvest was made near Aylesford.
F
I had a chance to visit my friend Louise's Cranberry Acres last October. I was amazed at the complex machinery, their acres of fields, and an intricate system of irrigation ponds and ditches designed to flood the cranberry fields on demand (most cranberries are harvested underwater: they float to the surface and are collected). Our cranberries are exported all over the world and are renowned for their gorgeous colour: Louise told me that Nova Scotian cranberries are by far the reddest. The cranberry harvest will be over soon, but cranberries last for weeks in your refrigerator and longer when frozen. There's no need for fancy preparation, just throw the whole bag into your freezer and they will be separate and intact when you're ready to use them. Don't bother to defrost them either, just be prepared to add a few extra minutes' cooking time to your recipe.
Cranberry Chutney This is our spicier, thicker version of cranberry sauce. At the Union Street Cafe, we serve this chutney alongside our North Mountain Free Rangin' Hot Chicken Sandwich and our version of Duck Confit. It's also great mixed with an equal part of mayo and slathered on a turkey sandwich. This chutney keeps at least a week in the refrigerator.

Who's Who: RaNdy NewmaN: Healthy, Wealthy and Wise H ave you ever Googled your name? There’s a million Michael Butlers in this world but only one me, but for fun, try searching your name. When I received an email from Randy Newman, I thought ‘this name sounds familiar’ so I Googled it and found out that Randy Newman is a Grammy, Emmy and Oscar Winning American singer-songwriter, arranger, composer, and pianist known for his mordant pop songs and for film scores including Toy Story, Cars, Seabiscuit and Meet the Parents. This was not the Randy Newman that emailed me! But this Randy Newman is Awesome! Randy Lynn Newman grew up in beautiful Cape Breton Island. After receiving a BSc degree in Biology and Psychology from Mount Allison and her Masters and PhD in Psychology and Neuroscience from Dalhousie, she moved to the Annapolis Valley where she’s now the Associate Professor of Psychology at Acadia University, where the focus of her teaching and research is in the area of Cognitive Neuroscience. Maybe she can pick your brain sometime! Randy, her husband Rob and their daughter Olivia have lived in this area for 6
So Choice S
o Choice Crafts was created from a dream I had back in May 2012 and when I woke up I said to my husband, "let's do it"! We obtained a small space, which eventually became 2 spaces, which we combined with an archway to provide more space. This extra space was much needed because when I went on the hunt
years and Randy continues to be amazed at the natural beauty that surrounds her and her family every day. As a family they love going to the markets, parks, and participating in festivals, plays and other activities offered to them. Randy came to me and the Who’s Who section of the Grapevine to discuss primarily her volunteer work with the Eastern Kings Community Health Board (EKCHB), of which she is now the Chair. Community Health Boards are legislated by the Provincial Government to develop and implement a community health plan, to manage community health grants and to provide advice and assistance to the District Health Authority, the Annapolis Valley District Health Authority, in this case. Randy’s immediate goal with the EKCHB is to recruit volunteers since they had a large number of retirees this year. Volunteers are asked to be passionate about health and wellness and commit to a three year term with meetings held once a month. Among the most important things Randy has learned during her 4 years of involvement with the board, is that health is much more than
being disease free. Randy and the board see the big picture and realize that having a healthy community is only made possible by eliminating the inequalities that exist in our community, such as social status, income, education and literacy, healthy child development, gender and culture. Education and activities within the community are important to the board and they need your help! The geographic region of Eastern Kings includes the communities of Hants Border, Wolfville, Greenwich, Port Williams, Baxter’s Harbour and Sheffield Mills. If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer, please email Randy at ekchb@avdha.nshealth.ca or call 542-1244.
I asked Randy what her goals were and she said “My personal goal is to keep up with my daughter. This requires me to keep fit and hopefully through my example, healthy eating and physical activity will become second nature to Olivia”. Randy told me she had several years of formal training as a Mezzo-Soprano and singing is the only occasion when she loses her Cape Breton accent. Perhaps attending an Open Mic in the area and using your voice
to find all locally made Nova Scotia products, I discovered an abundance of talent. Talent I knew I had to showcase!
We also have a local novel which has already won an award. We are at no shortage for variety and talent.
So Choice now proudly houses 36 local crafters and artists from around the province (from Annapolis Royal to Halifax to Guysborough and everywhere in between). All our vendors are unique in product and talented in their craft. Our store sells everything from: jewelry, quilts, handbags, soaps, candles, prim crafts, preserves, candy, hooked rugs, sewing and so much more.
We invite the people of Wolfville and the surrounding areas to support this new business that is, in turn, helping Nova Scotians and local products. So Choice is located at 461 Main St. above Caramel Spa. 542-5290 / facebook / sochoice.ca
