Tips for a Safer, More Enjoyable Summer at the Pool
VALLEY AUCTIONS the International
(StatePoint) As summer approaches, pools are great for play, exercise and therapy. However, it is critical that while enjoying ourselves, we take appropriate safety precautions. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 275 children nationwide under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools annually, and more than 4,100 children receive medical treatment for pool-related accidents, the majority of which occur in backyard pools. Luckily, building codes and standards can help. “Building codes are life savers and as the leading building codes and standards developer, we are accounting for every facet of the home, which includes specific provisions to make pools and spas safer,” says Dominic Sims, CEO of
Code Council. Emphasizing the importance of water safety, the Code Council has dedicated a week (May 17-23) during its annual Building Safety Month to the topic. 5 Ways to Go Beyond Saying ‘Thank You’ to Military Service Members (StatePoint) How do you thank someone who’s willing to risk their life for yours? When it comes to military service members and their families, advocates say there are many avenues for giving back meaningfully. As part of its “Give More Than Thanks” campaign celebrating 80 years of being the “Force Behind the Forces,” the United Service Organizations (USO) is inviting Americans to take actions that can make a tangible difference in the lives of service members. Here are five ideas to get you started: 1. Offer Skills or Services. Many service members face difficulties translating the skills and experience they acquired in the military to civilian jobs. Others struggle to adjust to the norms of the civilian workforce. Meanwhile, military spouses face professional obstacles throughout their service member’s career due to constant moves and deployments. Consider offering career advice or volunteering to guest lecture via military transition programs, such as the USO Pathfinder Transition Program, which equips service members and military spouses with tools needed to tackle the civilian job market. If you own a business or are a leader in a company, advocate for hiring qualified veterans. By offering practical support, you’re not only thanking service
members, you’re helping build an inclusive community that bridges the civilian-military divide. 2. Send a Care Package. Care packages filled with treats and reminders of home let troops know that friends, family and the American people are thinking of them, even from thousands of miles away. However, the process of sending military care packages can be complicated. One easy way to do so is through USO Wishbook, where you can select a symbolic gift from a catalog to be sent to service members. 3. Support Military Spouses. Deployments are challenging for both service members and their spouses. Reach out to a military spouse whose service member is deployed and offer to cook their family dinner, or to pick up groceries. Simply reaching out to see how they are doing can also make all the difference. 4. Volunteer. Put your gratitude into action. Many USO locations across the country need volunteers who can facilitate programs and events – virtually or safely in person – that provide the military community with the support needed to carry out their missions. 5. Donate. The USO has been expressing its thanks to service members by supporting the troops since World War II. Today, that gratitude is shown in USO locations around the globe; these brick-and-mortar centers serve as a home away
from home for deployed service members, and a place of respite for the larger military community. USO programming keeps deployed troops connected to loved ones, provides resources for service members and their families and boosts the morale of the entire military community through entertainment and other supportive events. Charitable donations to the USO help make that mission possible. To learn more about the USO’s work and discover additional ways to give more thanks, visit USO.org/ morethanthanks and follow the conversation at #MoreThanThanks. “Our service members and their families’ sacrifices require us to rise to the challenge. All Americans, united in spirit and action, can change the lives and communities of our military, and thus, our country, for the better,” says J.D. Crouch II, CEO and president of the USO

(c) USO photos PHOTO CAPTION:
(StatePoint) Looking to show your appreciation for U.S. service men and women? One tangible way to support members of the military, as well as display your appreciation for their sacrifices, is through the USO T-shirt campaign, that runs throughout the month of May. The USO -- The Force Behind the Forces -is a nonprofit organization that strengthens the military by connecting service members to family, home, and country. Given the unprecedented challenges brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic, the work of the USO is more valued by the military than ever before. In addition to raising funds for the USO’s important mission, this annual campaign also helps to bridge the militarycivilian divide. Each year, thousands of service members stationed around the world vote on a design for the USO T-shirt campaign, which is known as the “official uniform of the military supporter.” Now in its 11th year, the campaign is a meaningful way for Americans to do more than say simply say “thank you,” by donating and actually being part of the effort to support the military, and according to those who serve, it can also boost morale. “Seeing someone wear the USO T-shirt lets me know that they care about me, my family, and the military,” says USO’s Christopher Plamp, senior vice president for Operations, Programs and Entertainment. “It’s a simple gesture that means so much. I encourage Americans to get a shirt and
service members for the better,” says Plamp. “One concrete way to do so is by actively expressing your gratitude and support for members of the military and their families, at home and abroad during this campaign.”
demonstrate their support for the military. It’s a great way to show thanks to our Armed Forces.” To learn more, as well as to donate and receive a shirt to show your support, visit www.uso.org/uniform. Donations to the USO go toward mobile and center operations, programs and entertainment, transition services, and more. “Anyone can take meaningful action to change the lives of military

How the USO Prepares Service Members for Civilian Careers
(StatePoint) More than 200,000 American men and women in uniform complete their service and transition out of the military each year. The shift to civilian life – especially the search for a new career – can be challenging for many. Veterans often struggle to translate their skills and experiences into qualifications for a civilian role and may encounter stereotypes impacting their ability to be hired. To overcome these challenges, the USO works with military families through its Pathfinder Transition Program, which provides professional development services support throughout the service member or military spouse’s career, as well as when they settle back into civilian life. Here are some of the ways the USO helps service members plan their next career move. Pathfinder Action Plans USO Transition Specialists work one-on-one with Pathfinder program participants to identify their personal and professional goals and develop individualized action plans that provide a roadmap for achieving them. These action plans also help participants identify and take full advantage of services and resources in the areas of employment, education, financial
readiness and mentorship that are the best fit for their needs. Transition to the Trades The USO offers periodic webinars to help educate service members and their spouses about career opportunities in various industries, including the skilled trades. Recent webinars with Lowe’s Home Improvement highlighted careers and benefits of working in the electrical field, appliance repair, plumbing and the HVAC industry. More than 150 men and women participated in the webinars, with many indicating they would further consider career opportunities in the trades. Professional Development Workshops Other webinars help transitioning service members hone networking and other skills that can lead to their next career. The USO’s Transition Talks sessions cover topics such as navigating LinkedIn and leveraging its networking opportunities as well as building a stand-out resume for federal job opportunities. Sessions also include training and certification programs and are available to service members and their spouses. Google IT Support Professional Certificate Through a partnership with Google, the Pathfinder Transition Program also incorporates the Google IT Support Professional Certificate for service members, veterans and
military spouses. The eight-month certificate program provides participants with the skills and experience needed to qualify for entry-level IT support positions, helping them launch a new career in an in-demand field. After earning their certificate, participants are connected to a consortium of national employers hiring IT candidates. To learn more and sign up for the USO Pathfinder Transition Program, visit USO. org/programs/usopathfinder-transitionprogram. Service members and military spouses who are transitioning out of the military have years of employment and unique life experiences. Thanks to programs designed to support them during this time, they are better able to successfully launch post-military careers.

help identify compliance with current standards, all pool and hot tub drains must have a cover or grate marked with the appropriate product marking, including the service life in years and an information label that is provided to the pool owner. Not having a compliant cover could result in some part of a swimmer’s body being entrapped in the drain – a dangerous situation that could result in injury or drowning. If a cover is broken, missing or noncompliant, the pool should be closed immediately, and
a replacement should be performed by pool professionals. • Ensure an existing pool has safe suction outlets: Pools and spas with a single drain – other than an unblockable outlet – must have a certified blockable suction outlet and one of the following: a safety vacuum release system; a suction-limiting vent system; a gravity drainage system; or other safety features that comply with industry standards. • Secure the proper permits for a pool installation: If you’re installing a pool, it
will be important to contact your local building department first to determine what permits are needed and what requirements you must follow. “With the weather warming and families spending more time at home, a pool offers hours of fun for everyone,” says Sims. “In addition to adult supervision, safety code compliance helps ensure a safer, more enjoyable pool experience.” For more building safety resources, visit iccsafe.org.

Celebrate National Bike Month by Adopting These Healthy Habits
(StatePoint) Whether rediscovering the joy of riding a bike or taking a ride for the first time, cycling saw a boom during the pandemic, and many believe this trend is here to stay. May brings warm weather, sunshine and flowers, as well as the celebration of National Bike Month an excellent time to recognize the many benefits of this healthy habit, and outfit yourself with everything you need to embrace your inner adventurer. To help celebrate the month, Huffy Bicycles is offering the following tips and insights to get you moving this month and beyond. Recognize the Benefits Bicycling is a heart-healthy cardiovascular exercise that strengthens your lower body, yet is low-impact on joints, making it a terrific workout for adults of all ages, as well as kids and families. It’s also great for the mind, and has been shown in studies to boost mood and improve cognitive function. But the benefits extend beyond the individual. Biking as a substitute for driving a car is good for the planet and your local community, cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants and improving traffic congestion. Find Time to Bike Changing or creating a single habit can have unexpected and widereaching effects. Even with a jam-packed schedule, you can establish the habit of biking by seamlessly incorporating it into your current routine. Here are a few ideas for doing so: • Pick one to two days a week to commute to work by bike. • Swap out sedentary activities you do to unwind with your family, such as watching TV, with bike rides. • Are weekends the time you spend connecting with friends? Suggest your next meet-up start with a bike ride. • Whether you’re a runner, swimmer or love working out at home, swap at least one workout a week
with cycling. Cross training emphasizes different muscle groups and helps build out a more wellrounded fitness routine. Go Electric Electric bikes are great alternatives for all adult riders, no matter your level of experience. An e-bike helps you get back on a bike if it’s been a while since your last ride, if you have physical limitations that make riding a standard bike difficult, or if you want to keep up on a ride with more experienced friends. The pedal-powered boost can also provide a less intense alternative to traditional biking, especially for those looking to commute without breaking a sweat. Whether it’s to ease back into biking or you just want a cool bike, the e-bike offers the same joys as a conventional bike ride with a bit of a kick. Get Equipped Consider a one-stop brand, such as Huffy Bicycles to ensure each member of your family is equipped with the bike that best meets their needs. Whether you’re an adrenaline seeker in need of a tough, durable mountain or gravel bike, or a day tripper seeking a cruiser or comfort bike, Huffy offers a range of models in every style. They have tricycles, bicycles, scooters and battery-powered ride-ons for kids of all ages, from
those still experimenting with foot-to-floor and firstbike fun, to active kids seeking adventure. Finally, if you’re an RV-er or plan to regularly commute by bike, they also offer fun-to-ride electric bikes that make it easy to ride more miles and power up hills. For more information, visit www.huffy.com. This National Bike Month, pave the way for a healthy habit you and your family can enjoy together for years to come.

Tips to Give Bugs the Boot This Summer
VALLEY AUCTIONS
(StatePoint) Warm and wet spring and summer conditions predicted for much of the country are going to make for an extra buggy season, according to the biannual Bug Barometer forecast from the National Pest Management Association. What’s more, ants, roaches and stinging insects are well-equipped at finding food and shelter in and around your home, and they are smarter than you may think. However, you can take
steps to prepare for their arrival. For a safe, healthy and comfortable season at home, follow these pest management tips: • Don’t feed the insects: Without proper precautions, your home could inadvertently be the most popular insect buffet in town. To ensure you’re feeding just your family and not a parade of bugs, keep surfaces free of crumbs and residue. Regularly sweep around areas where food is prepared and consumed. Wipe up spills immediately and close food containers securely. Be sure your kitchen garbage has a tightly-fitting lid. • Drain the swamp: Standing water can quickly become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other bugs (and lead to a host of other issues). It’s important to know that the problem may take some diagnosing, and could require such actions as changing the soil composition of your lawn or grading the land to encourage proper drainage. However, managing this issue is well worth the effort involved. • Blast bugs without harsh chemicals. Killing bugs doesn’t need to put you out of house and home for hours or even minutes. Today, there are effective ways to kill bugs using friendly ingredients. For example, Zevo Ant, Roach and Fly Multi-Insect Trigger Spray works on a broad range of household bugs using lemongrass oil and geraniol as active ingredients. Zevo sprays are deadly to bugs and safe for use around

people and pets when used as directed, making them a year-round household essential. To that end, patch any holes or tears in screen doors and windows, or better yet, replace them entirely. Keep doors, windows and the garage otherwise closed. wait a few weeks before mowing. Experts also say that ongoing maintenance is essential to keeping that lawn looking great. “One of the worst things you’ll have to fight, no matter what type of grass you have, is weeds,” says Exmark partner Brian Latimer, a professional angler and yard fanatic. “And you’ll have to fight weeds all year.” To ensure a lush, healthy lawn, Latimer offers these additional weed-fighting and green-up tips: 1. Fight Weeds. Although handweeding works, applying preemergent treatments to your lawn can help combat opportunistic weeds preemptively. Just be sure any chemical being applied is safe for the type of grass you have. Keep an eye on your lawn and manage weeds that appear. 2. Mulch. While weeds tend to thrive in bare soil, they hate thick mulch. Mulching can keep weeds from germinating. Use landscape fabrics beneath the mulch to keep sunlight out, but you’ll want to be sure it’s a type that will allow water to still permeate your soil. You’ll also want to prune plants and trees. 3 Hacks to Make More Time for Fun This Summer (StatePoint) Even relaxation and fun take some preparation. But there’s no reason to work harder than you need to. Follow these hacks to get to the good stuff faster this summer. 1. Optimized Travel: Traveling by car this summer? Road navigation apps like Waze combine GPS and real-time crowd-sourced information to help you find the best route based on traffic conditions. But remember, sometimes the journey is also an opportunity for fun and there are apps for people who embrace that mindset. RoadTrippers, for example, can help you make the most of the mileage, as it offers information about scenic detours, local attractions and more. 2. Waterside Fun: Whether you’re hanging out poolside, lakeside or at the beach, faster, smarter set-up means there will be more time to unwind. Luckily, there is a brand new pool flotation technology designed to help you get out on the water faster. Check out Swimways Spring Floats, an ultra-comfortable collection of
foldable, portable fabric-covered floats that now have three times faster inflation and deflation with no pump needed. Their exclusive, patent-pending Hyper-Flate Valve Technology is engineered to increase airflow in while preventing airflow out to take the stress and struggle out of setting up your float. 3. Summer Meals: When cooking is accompanied by fresh air and the sounds of nature, it will feel less like a chore and more like leisure. So don’t wait for holidays and special occasions to enjoy your backyard grill. You don’t even need to wait until the weekend. Select one day a week to do all your indoor meal prep. Then, make the most of summer evenings by grilling and dining outdoors all week long. From road trips to pool excursions, summer fun awaits, and with the right mindset and the best tools and gear, you can save time and energy on plans and prep.
New pool flotation technology inflates three times faster.
