Uptown Music Collective (A Non-Profit School of Music) accepting scholarship applications for 24-25 school year. Contact Jared Mondell (jared@uptownmusic.org (mailto: jared@uptownmusic.org); 570329-0888 uptownmusic.org (http:// uptownmusic.org/)

The Uptown Music Collective, the area’s premier nonprofit school of music, is now accepting scholarship applications for its 2024-2025 school year, which will begin in September. This year, the Collective is offering 14 needs and merit-based scholarships to currently enrolled students, as well as new students wishing to enroll in the school for the upcoming year. All scholarships that are being offered will cover one full year at the school of music. Current scholarship stewards include UPMC North Central PA, UPMC Health Plan, Angelina’s Song Foundation, Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Hudock Capital Group, Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, Chartwell Hotels, The Kiessling Group of Janney Montgomery Scott; KFC Williamsport, and more. In the early days of the school, founder Dave Brumbaugh would teach students who couldn’t afford to pay at no cost. They just needed to show the desire to learn and the discipline to work hard at their craft. In return, he expected them to excel at their studies; be respectful; clean and take care of the school; help with organizational tasks; and, when ready, to teach their peers. That idea of making high-quality music education available to everyoneregardless of age, gender, ethnicity or financial status - sits at the core of what the Collective does. Through the UMC Scholarship and Financial Aid programs,

UMC offers dynamic music education to any student that is willing to work hard and remains committed to never turning away a deserving student because of the inability to pay. In 2009, the Collective offered its first official scholarship, The Alice Hileman Memorial Scholarship, which was created and funded by a generous anonymous donor. That scholarship was soon followed by the Lew Gilberti Memorial Scholarship, created by family and friends in memory of local businessman and musician, Lew Gilberti, Eight years ago, the Uptown Music Collective quintupled its scholarship offering and formalized a new sliding scale discount rate, whih allows the school to help even more students in need. Aside from the generous donations of individuals and local businesses, the financial aid being offered is the result of the school’s highly successful Scholarship Fundraising Concert held for the past eight winters at the Community Arts Center.

The Uptown Music Collective has continued to grow for more than 24 years from what many once called “the best-kept secret in the Williamsport area,” to one of the area’s most highly respected nonprofit, educational organizations. The school is dedicated to providing a wellrounded education to students of all ages, from children as young as 3 years old to retired adults and everyone in-between. The Collective is known for its positive peer group, inspiring teachers and a diverse multitude of performance opportunities. Although the Collective is known for highly talented student performers, there is no previous experience needed to begin enrollment at the Collective. “We have students starting at any level of musical experience and there are a lot of scholarships available for brand new students looking to enroll at the Collective and curent students, as well,” said Jared Mondell, assistant executive director of the Collective. “We encourage families to take the time to apply. The process is easy, and it provides an opportunity to explore all that the Uptown Music Collective has to offer.”The Collective feels strongly about the role of music in creating well-rounded, thoughtful young people, and works to establish characteristics such as self-discipline and personal

responsibility in each of its students through healthy habits like practice and self-control. Uptown Music Collective students consistently perform at high levels not only musically, but also in their respective schools and as valuable members of other community organizations. The deadline to apply for this round of scholarships is July 1, 2024. Scholarships will be awarded in mid-July. Lycoming College, in collaboration with the Community Arts Center, will bring this golden age musical to life starting July 26 through July 28. The Lycoming College Summer Stocks mission is to offer an opportunity for middle and high school age students to work and perform under guidance from professional theater-makers so that they can bring new passion and skills back to their community and educational programs. Each year, the summer stock program presents a student-centric show with professional production values to a large enthusiastic audience in the beautiful Community Arts Center. Lycoming College Summer Stock returns to the Community Arts Center stage this July 26 through 28 with The Music Man. By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic, and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Wilson’s six-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation. The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band that he vows to organize-this, despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by the curtain’s fall. Tickets cost $10-$20 plus fees and will go on sale Monday, March 4, at 10 am and can be purchased at CACLive. com/TheMusicMan or through the Box Office at 570-326-2424. Auditions, open positions, and more information about the cast and crew will be released on the CAC social media channels and website and the Lycoming College Theatre website, Lycoming. edu/theatre/summer-stock.aspx. The Community Arts Center is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennsylvania College of Technology, a national leader in applied technology education. 7/22

Fall 1991 and January 1992

Testimonials: My cousin and his new wife (both in their early 40’s) were visiting my mom, my sister, and I. My sister asks, “So, how did you meet?” They kind of giggled and asked each other, “Should we tell them?” They said they met through the LBYL column. My sister and I decided we would try our fare at meeting “Mr. Right”. (BTW, my cousin and his wife are still married and hopelessly in love.) My sister didn’t have much luck, but in January 1992, I saw this ad that kept drawing my attention. As described, he really wasn’t what I was looking for, but... We met later that month for the first time; got engaged in 1993 and married in 1994. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary this October and we have a 23-year-old daughter who lives out of state. Thank you, LBYL!

Improve Your Backyard, Deck or Patio by Hanging String Lights

VALLEY HO E IMPROVEMENT VALLEY AUCTIONS

(StatePoint) Outdoor lighting can extend the time you can spend enjoying your backyard with your friends and family. While there are a host of involved and expensive outdoor lighting solutions, there’s one easy DIY alternative that offers a lot of charm.

VALLEY HEALTH

“String lights are a beautiful, inexpensive and fun way to add personality and ambience to your yard and patio,” says expert landscape designer, Doug Scott.

In a recent Exmark Done-In-A-Weekend Projects video, Scott demonstrates how to hang simple, cost-effective backyard lighting. With the best part of the summer still on tap, he is offering his steps for this two-day project for improving your

HAL THOMAS LAND SURVEYING

outdoor living

space:

1. Determine where you’ll hang your lights. You can hang them from fence posts, on trees, off porch railings, or even purchase light stakes that do the hard work for you.

2. Research the style of backyard lights that you want to use.

3. Sketch an outline or design of how you want the lights to look. You may want to crisscross the lights or string them just around the perimeter of the patio. Knowing your design will help you determine how many strands of lights you need. Just be sure your design represents you and how you want to live outside.

4. Determine what installation equipment you need. You may need extra equipment such as an extension cord or hardware to hang the lights. Make sure that all hardware is weatherproof and outdoorgrade.

5. Measure the area where you’ll hang your lights, being sure to leave room for slack and to reach the outlet.

6. When you begin hanging the lights, try to have the light strand connections be as discrete as possible.

7. Install light hooks.

8. Hang outdoor string lights. To avoid breakage, remove all of the bulbs from the light

VALLEY DINING

strings before hanging them. Once the strings are hung, install one bulb in each strand and test it to make sure it works. Then add the remaining bulbs.

space. Now it’s time to light up your backyard living space and kick back and enjoy!

To view the tutorial and get inspired, visit Exmark’s Backyard Life,

destination that provides everything from lawn care tips to gardening and outdoor hosting advice, at exmark. com/backyard.

String or strand outdoor lighting will add after-dark pizzazz to your outdoor living space. And though this improvement makes a big atmospheric impact, it’s one that won’t break the bank.

Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers

Prep time: 30 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes Serves: 40

2 packages Bob Evans

Thick Sliced Hardwood

Smoked Bacon, slices cut in half

1 package Bob Evans White Cheddar Mashed Potatoes

1 package garlic herb cheese spread

20 jalapeno peppers, halved,

seeded with membranes removed 1/4 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper

Heat oven to 400° F. Set bacon out to thaw to room temperature so it is pliable.

In mixing bowl, use rubber spatula to combine mashed potatoes and garlic herb cheese. Stir until incorporated. Spread 1 teaspoon mashed potato mixture in each jalapeno half; level each with butter knife or spatula.

Wrap each jalapeno with bacon; use three half slices for large jalapenos or two halves for smaller sizes. Be sure bacon is wrapped sealing in mashed potato mixture tightly.

In small mixing bowl, combine brown sugar and cayenne pepper. Generously sprinkle over bacon and pat gently to make it stick.

Line cookie sheet with piece of parchment paper so sugar does not burn to pan. Bake until bacon reaches desired crispiness, around 25-35 minutes.

Let peppers cool slightly before serving, about 5 minutes.

5 Steps to Grill Vegetables

VALLEY AUCTIONS VALLEY HEALTH

(Culinary.net)

Burgers, brats, steak, chicken, pork chops and all the flavors of fresh meat get all the love on the grill, but a well-rounded meal calls for sides and veggies.

Before you plan your next backyard barbecue, incorporate tasty vegetablespeppers, asparagus, onions, tomatoes, zucchini and more - for an all-out blitz of fresh-grilled flavor. Consider these simple steps to properly grill your crispy veggies:

1. Light the grill. Step one, of course, is to prep a hot grill. For the best cooking experience, you’ll want medium-high heat or even high heat for quick, direct grilling. By lighting the grill ahead of veggie prep, you’ll allow plenty of heating time to

complete your other tasks.

2. Prepare vegetables. Depending on what you plan to cook, there’ll likely be some preparation to undertake, such as cutting off stems and blemishes or removing pits and seeds. In addition to cleaning up your ingredients, you may want to chop, dice or slice based on the recipe.

3. Coat vegetables with olive oil. Drizzling just a small amount of olive oil over your vegetables and tossing to coat adds a couple benefits. First, it helps the outer layer crisp rather than dry out, plus it aids in seasonings - like salt and pepper - sticking to the vegetable instead of falling off while on the grill or in a pan.

4. Consider using foil packets or skewers. If char marks aren’t your thing, tossing

chopped or diced veggies into a foil packet before hitting the grill steams them for a bit of a softer texture. Alternately, wooden skewers soaked in water (to prevent burning) can help keep smaller chunks of veggies from slipping through the grill grates while still achieving a crispy exterior.

5. Pay attention to grill times. Different types of vegetables and preparation methods call for different cook times, but 5-10 minutes over direct heat generally gets the job done. The smaller you chunk, chop, slice or dice, the less time it’ll take.
