Protect Your Feet When Tackling Home Improvement Projects

VALLEY AUCTIONS

(StatePoint) Did you know many home and yard projects contain hidden dangers for your feet? The good news though, according to foot and ankle surgeons, is most injuries are avoidable if you take appropriate precautions. Amber Shane, DPM, FACFAS, an Orlando-area foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, sees many

improvement projects, but we see so many different types of foot and ankle injuries in our office -- many of which can be avoided with proper shoe wear and extra caution,” Dr. Shane says. Dr. Shane advises to avoid working in bare feet or in sandals when engaging in any projects around the house, even the projects that seem harmless such as power washing decks or using a ladder. VALLEY HELP WANTED feet instead of your intended object. “The pressure from a heavy-duty power washer is strong enough to take off the superficial layer of skin, especially on the toes. So, it’s best to wear fully closed-toed shoes to help avoid injury or damage to the skin,” she says. Dr. Shane recommends wearing a sturdy, supportive shoe with good treads when doing roofing work or projects that require climbing up and down a ladder. “Sturdy shoes will provide proper traction to keep a good grip and prevent any slipping. Repeated climbing on ladders without good support can lead to injuries, including stress fractures and neuromas or nerve compressions,” she says. When working on wood surfaces such as decks or

flooring, it’s best to wear closed-toe shoes to save your feet from slivers or puncture wounds from nails or wood splinters. Dr. Shane suggests, “To help protect your feet from injury, avoid wearing flip flops or softsoled shoes, such as popular foamtype clogs, while in a construction zone with exposed wood.” If an injury does occur, Dr. Shane recommends contacting a foot and ankle surgeon near you to have the injury properly

examined and treated, or for serious injuries, visiting the closest emergency room. To find a foot and ankle surgeon in your area and for more healthy feet tips, visit the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website

at FootHealthFacts. org. DIY projects can bring tremendous joy and satisfaction to homeowners. At the same time, they are associated with certain risks. Use proper care and precaution to keep your feet safe and injury-free. *****

Testimonials: (Looking for some new comments of success) Fall 1991 and January 1992 Testimonials: My cousin and his new wife (both in their early 40’s) were visiting my mom, my sister, and I. My sister asks, “So, how did you meet?” They kind of giggled and asked each other, “Should we tell them?” They said they met through the LYBL column. My sister and I decided we would try our fare at meeting “Mr. Right”. (BTW, my cousin and his wife are still married and hopelessly in love.) My sister didn’t have much luck, but in January 1992, I saw this ad that kept drawing my attention. As described, he really wasn’t what I was looking for, but... We met later that month for the first time; got engaged in 1993 and married in 1994. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary this October and we have a 23-year-old daughter who lives out of state. Thank you, LYBL! Mr. & Mrs. J.N. 4/4/17 Testimonial: I placed an ad 1/2/94 and met the love of my life. He has 3 boys and I have 3 girls. We were married 8/26/95 and now we’re the Brady Bunch. Top 5 Tips for Healthcare Practices Recovering from the Pandemic

VALLEY AUCTIONS and are reporting less patient volume and declines in revenues. With overhead and other costs increasing, they should identify the most and least profitable services they provide while ensuring their rates are competitive. Integrating stronger profitability strategies can help with longstanding growth and sustainability. 4. Leverage digital channels: For many businesses, digital channels have become a primary source of communication and service for their customers. To encourage patients to return to the physical office, highlighting safety protocols through email or social media can ease their concerns and help set expectations. Update online channels with current information and photos to represent what an in-person visit might look like. For example, show doctors in masks. Or, highlight what a telehealth appointment looks like. Those patients wishing to receive virtual care can also benefit from online portals, downloadable forms and other digital communication tools that create a two-way dialog allowing them to share questions and concerns about care, treatment, appointments and prescription refills. 5. Seek the right relationships and resources: One of the most important things physicians can do is pinpoint the right group of trusted advisors for practice management tips, financial guidance, and direction on the right products and resources for their unique needs. Owner of Veterinary Dental Services, Dr. Bonnie Shope says one of the most important lessons for her business was surrounding herself with mentors who have different perspectives and experiences. This expert team should also consist of a business banker with specific experience in the healthcare industry, as well as a healthcare consultant

team to advise on practice management and other business challenges. Additionally, there are many tips and tools available for healthcare practitioners taking proactive steps towards recovery. Check out the free articles and videos available on the Wells Fargo Healthcare Practices microsite. As the economy continues to recover and many people return to their pre-pandemic routines, healthcare practices should lean into creative business strategies to help them survive and thrive in the months and years ahead. *****

(StatePoint) Employing one in eight adults nationwide, the healthcare industry is vital to the economy and communities across the country. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was hit hard, with many Americans avoiding routine and elective care. From veterinarians to dentists to primary care physicians, experts say that practitioners of all stripes have had to contend with unprecedented business challenges. “Practice owners have always needed more than medical skills to be successful, but now they’re in need of even more support to get back on track,” says David Marrin, head of Wells Fargo Healthcare Industries Group, which specializes in supporting small to midsized healthcare practices. As COVID-19 vaccines continue to be administered and social distancing mandates lessen, it’s anticipated that the industry will bounce back. In the meantime, Marrin says practitioners should use this time as a learning experience and re-position their practice for future success: 1. Reach out to patients: Many people skipped their annual check-ups last year because they were unsure if it was safe to visit their doctor’s office in-person. With a backlog of patients, there’s an opportunity to update those clients on new safety protocols. Make sure returning patients know in advance the safety measures being taken, such as temperature checks, mandatory masks, physical barriers or limited occupancy. Practices offering telehealth or home delivery of products and medications should highlight such offerings as proactive ways they’re safely serving client needs now and in the future. 2. Playtime: It’s Not Just for Kids, Say Experts

c) Paul Bradbury / iStock via Getty Images Plus

(StatePoint) While most of us associate playtime with childhood, adults are increasingly acknowledging the importance of play and leisure time for themselves. A new survey commissioned by The Genius of Play and conducted by OnePoll finds that 89% of adults have learned to appreciate the importance of play and leisure time over the past year. What’s more, 84% say taking time to play helps them be more productive at work. “You’re never too young or too old to play,” says Anna Yudina, senior director of marketing initiatives at The Toy Association, which spearheads The Genius of Play. “In fact, research links play with a number of wellness benefits in adults, such as reducing stress, boosting life satisfaction, and empowering people to be creative, flexible thinkers.” To incorporate play into your life, consider these tips from The Genius of Play: • Take on a Hobby: Seventy percent of adults picked up a new hobby or leisure activity over the past year -- and with good reason. Hobbies can be a source of positive emotions, get you outdoors, encourage physical activity and social interactions, and spark creativity. From roller skating to dancing to crafting to playing an instrument, consider taking on a new, playful hobby or revisiting one you

enjoyed during childhood. • Plan a Game Night: While play often occurs spur-of-the-moment, life is hectic and schedules are jam-packed. Consider scheduling time for fun to ensure it happens. For example, make one evening each week a totally screen-free, stress-free experience. Order pizza (or your household’s cuisine of choice) and break out games and puzzles. You might even consider planning themed trivia nights delving into your favorite subjects. • Hop in the Car: Whether you choose a destination that allows you to simply relax, or you take on a more active adventure, a trip can broaden your horizons and rejuvenate you when you’re feeling down or just trapped in the daily routine. Consider taking a just-forfun trip on your own, with a friend or partner, or pack up the car and bring the kids. • Bring out Your Inner Child: Parents,

grandparents and other adults with a kid in their life can spend more time playing with the little ones. Not only is play the perfect way to bond, research highlights a number of associated health benefits. Those who play with children burn 20% more calories per week, and researchers link playfulness to creativity, spontaneity and positive attitudes. Intergenerational play can help adults maintain cognitive skills as they age and even extend their life. A study published in the journal “Evolution and Human Behavior” found that grandparents who help out with grandchildren live longer. If you’re looking for some inspiration, visit thegeniusofplay.org for tons of fun, free games and downloadable activities. “While our primary mission is educating parents and caregivers about play’s vital role in child development, adults need time to play too,” says Yudina. “We hope to motivate people of all ages to play more -- whether it’s by embracing personal hobbies or by spending more time playing with their kids. *****
