Zone and the Local Music Collective for an evening of music featuring Cait Coller and Kat Holdren, Wednesday, July 10, 79:15 PM. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Tickets $10.00 at the door to support artists and organizations includes snacks, coffee and flavored water. Children unde 12 free. Each of our Listening Rooms feature performances from two acts, chosen from our incredible pool of local musical talents. Cait Coller has grown up in the Susquehanna Valley performing with family and friends for over a decade. Her acoustic musical selection is a mix of indie, folk, and americana songs ranging from old favorites to obscure new favorites, and a handful of originals. Kat Holdren: In 2019 I was diagnosed with AntiNMDA Receptor Encephalitis - a very rare autoimmune disease that attacks neuroreceptors in the brain. I was hospitalized for months. The most common symptoms of this disease are severe amnesia, hallucinations, psychosis, and seizures. After my medically induced coma I couldn’t walk, recognize family, read a children’s book, or write my name. Nurses took me on wheelchair walks to stave off boredom and on one of these, my moom mentioned to my nurse that I have played the piano for most of my life. The nurse wheeled me to a grand piano near the cafeteria. My mom

will tell you that I played a Beethoven sonata with the same precision I did on the day I auditioned for college with it. Despite my serious cognitive setbacks, I still knew it by heart. When I tell people this story, they often tell me that this is an example of muscle memory at its best but I disagree with that theory. When everything you knowyour health, your memory, everything that makes you you are stripped away, the only choice you have is to find something to grasp unto that feels like yourself. Woody Wolfe, a local musician and friend, came to play for me in the hospital more times than I could count. He would bring his acoustic guitar to my hospital room and sing Angel from Montgomery by John Prine while I drifted in and out - a song I have since come to love and have sung hundreds of times. When I was released from the hospital, Woody encouraged me to join an aphasia singing group to strengthen the damaged neuroreceptors in my brain, to make friends, and to get out of the house. So, every Friday I did just that, and we sang Angel from Montgomery, and slowly but surely, I sang again and I laughed again and in the last four years I have grown my life again from the smallest seed and a big part of this is songwriting. If you’re looking for creative inspiration, I highly suggest a near death experience. Love, heartbreak, survival, unconditionality, hope - all of these have crept into my songwriting since my illness. I am grateful to be witness to life’s smallest miracles and to have loved so deeply it left a scar and to have lived and now to be able to write about and share it with you. 7/8s

Fall 1991 and January 1992 Testimonials: My cousin and his new wife (both in their early 40’s) were visiting my mom, my sister, and I. My sister asks, “So, how did you meet?” They kind of giggled and asked each other, “Should we tell them?” They said they met through the LBYL column. My sister and I decided we would try our fare at meeting “Mr. Right”. (BTW, my cousin and his wife are still married and hopelessly in love.) My sister didn’t have much luck, but in January 1992, I saw this ad that kept drawing my attention. As described, he really wasn’t what I was looking for, but... We met later that month for the first time; got engaged in 1993 and married in 1994. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary this October and we have a 23-year-old daughter who lives out of state. Thank you, LBYL! Mr. & Mrs. J.N.

(StatePoint) Whether you own or rent the place you call home, ensuring that it’s energy efficient can help you save money, increase your comfort and contribute to improved indoor air quality. It’s also better for the planet.

How to Green Your Home or Apartment for Maximum Savings VALLEY HO E IMPROVEMENT VALLEY AUCTIONS VALLEY HEALTH

To help you make choices that will trim your monthly expenses and reduce your carbon footprint, Freddie Mac is offering the following tips:

Home-Searching Tips

When house hunting, your realtor can help you learn about the current energy usage of the homes you’re interested in purchasing. If you’re explicitly looking for green housing, it’s helpful to work with a professional with specific expertise or credentials in this area.

Whether you’re in the market to buy or rent, basic energy- and water-saving features to check for when visiting properties include good insulation, properly sealed doors and windows, smart thermostats, lowflow or dual-flush toilets, high-efficiency or tankless hot water heaters, and frontloading washing machines. The ENERGY STAR and WaterSense labels are good

indicators that the property, and the appliances within it, are designed with efficiency in mind. You should also consider which direction the building faces and whether it’s shaded. The amount of direct sunlight your potential home receives can have a large impact on your HVAC needs.

Making Updates

There are many steps you can take to improve your home’s energy and water efficiency. If you’re unsure where to start, consider referencing the Department of Energy’s data-driven tools and calculators. You could also hire a professional to perform an energy audit. This will pinpoint where you’re losing energy and what renovations will save you money. Some quick DIY updates to make right now include caulking window casings, weatherstripping doors, replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFLs or LEDs, and installing low-flow faucets and showerheads. Additional money-saving updates include installing a smart, programmable thermostat, replacing older appliances and installing a tankless

hot water heater.

Renting? Reach out to your landlord to determine what updates they’re willing to make. You may not be allowed to make permanent changes, or interested in making investments in someone else’s property, but energy-saving habits, such as washing clothes in cold water and adjusting the thermostat when leaving town, can help.

The Return

You may be asking yourself whether all this effort is worth it. The answer?

Up-to-date, energyand water-efficient technologies can

on your bills. And because today’s savvy buyers are looking for a home that will be kind to both their wallet and the environment, efficiency improvements can also boost resale value. In fact, Freddie Mac research found that homes with high energyefficiency ratings sold for 2.7% more on average than unrated homes.

Fortunately, there are programs available, such as Energy Efficient Mortgages, to help finance these improvements upfront. With the understanding that reducing home utility costs places families in a better and helps preserve home affordability over time, Freddie Mac offers GreenCHOICE Mortgages that can be applied to a new home purchase or a no cash-out refinance and can be used to cover basic energy efficiency improvements up to $6,500 without the need for an energy report. With a GreenCHOICE Mortgage you can borrow up to 15% of the home’s “as complete” appraised value to pay for basic energy and water efficiency improvements. Speak with your lender about the financing options available to you and which may best suit your needs.

There are no doubt long-term savings and gains to be reaped from greening your home. And thanks to new programs, paying for these updates is easier for more American families.

Real Smoke Flavor Elevates Classic Summer Grilling Dishes

(StatePoint) From patriotic holidays to park side barbecues to casual weeknight dinners, you can elevate your grilling game this summer with premium ingredients, and some culinary inspiration.

To help you get started, Bear Mountain BBQ, maker of 100% all-natural hardwood pellets for pellet grills and smokers, has asked two of their favorite chefs to share new takes on grilling classics.

First up are these loaded, smoky Elote Hot Dogs, brought to you by Bear Mountain ambassador, Meiko Temple:

VALLEY HO E IMPROVEMENT VALLEY AUCTIONS VALLEY HEALTH

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Serves: 8 hot dogs Ingredients

• 1/3 cup mayonnaise

• 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice

• 1 teaspoon tajin seasoning

• 1 teaspoon Cholula hot sauce (optional)

• 4 ears corn, husks removed

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

• 1/3 cup chopped cilantro

• 1/3 cup grated Cotija cheese (option: grate additional for garnish)

• 1 clove garlic, minced

• 1/4 teaspoon chili powder, garnish

• 8 jumbo hot dogs, butterflied

• 8 hot dog buns

• Bear Mountain BBQ’s Chef’s Choice Pellets, available exclusively at Walmart

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, lime juice, tajin seasoning and hot sauce. Refrigerate until ready for use.

2. Preheat grill or smoker to 375 degrees F with pellets. Clean and oil cooking grates.

Remove husk and silk from corn cobs. Brush with melted butter.

4. Place corn on the grill over direct heat. Open flame broiler plate and rotate regularly to char all sides.

5. Transfer corn to the side of indirect heat every 5 minutes for approximately 15 minutes.

6. Remove from grill. Let cool.

7. Use a sharp knife to slice off kernels.

8. With a sharp knife, make a lengthwise cut along the top of each hot dog. Don’t cut all the way through. You want the hot dog to remain in one piece, creating a butterfly-like shape.

9. Grill hot dogs over indirect heat for 2 to 3 minutes per side.

10. To the chili lime mayo bowl, add grilled corn, Cotija cheese, cilantro and garlic. Toss to make the elote. Place hot dogs into buns cut side up. Add elote into the center cut. Garnish with additional cheese and chili powder. Enjoy!

The second dish is these Smoked Apple Pork Tacos by the talented Bear Mountain ambassador Merry Graham.

Are you a mosquito magnet? Here are 4 reasons why and how to protect yourself

(BPT) - There’s nothing quite like the lure of the outdoors when the sun is shining, temperatures are heating up and the world is in bloom. Unfortunately, while you and your family are enjoying all that the warmer months have to offer, mosquitoes are too.

you may be attracting mosquitoes without even knowing it - and preventive measures you can take to help keep them at bay.

To help improve your experience as you spend more time outdoors this season, TruGreen, the nation’s leading lawn care treatment provider, shares four reasons

www.a-1sealing.com

1. Donning flowery perfume

Before you opt for floral scents throughout the summer months, consider that you may be unintentionally enticing mosquitoes. The reaction from the floral scent on your skin’s surface attracts mosquitoes.

Before heading outside, you may want to avoid floral perfumes, lotions and sunscreens - or think twice before going outside soon after applying.

2. Enjoying a cold brew

While many people like to drink beer at friends and family outdoor gatherings, beer - or any alcohol - expands your capillaries which sends more blood to your skin’s surface. As a result, your body temperature increases, making you produce more sweat and carbon dioxide - a perfect concoction to intrigue mosquitoes.

The best advice? Save IPAs for your indoor gatherings and choose non-alcoholic, sugar-free beverages while you’re having fun in the sun.

3. Attractive - but stagnant - bodies of water

Decor such as bird baths, flower pots, or ponds can provide great flora and fauna for your outdoor space, but be aware that stagnant bodies of water are a mosquitofavorite breeding ground. Any kind of outdoor decor or container holding water is an appealing place for mosquitoes to meet, mate and lay eggs.

To help prevent mosquitoes from intruding on your outdoor get-togethers, scout your property frequently to empty and dry standing bodies of water.

navy blue, black, gray and red. They can also bite through clothes, which gets right to your skin when wearing form-fitting clothing.

You can make yourself less of a target by opting for loose-fitting clothing with paler colors that are less likely to get their attention - like white or yellow. Best yet, wearing lighter, looser clothing can also help you feel cooler when the temps heat up.

“We can all agree that the presence of mosquitoes is less than thrilling,” said Dr. Roger May, TruGreen’s director of technical operations. “If mosquitoes continue to be a problem in homeowners’ backyards, I recommend they consider TruGreen’s Mosquito Defense treatment, which can help target these pests and create a more comfortable outdoor environment to enjoy all season long!”

4. Wearing darkcolored and tight clothing

Mosquitoes have limited eyesight (their sense of smell is much better!), but their small eyes can easily see bold, dark colors including
