Centennial Amphitheater McCosh Park Musician, songwriter, singer, and major hitmaker -- Bonnie “Guitar” Buckingham, is one of the biggest stars to ever emerge from the Pacific Northwest’s music scene. And her path to fame was one that saw her become an early “crossover” artist: never satisfied to find a niche and rest on her laurels, Guitar created songs that alternately scored on the pop Best Seller charts and/or on the country music charts all the way from the 1950s up through the 1980s. But far from focusing solely on her own career, the multi-talented artist also contributed her skills as a (rare female) session instrumentalist, talent scout, record label executive, audio engineer, and session producer to the success of many other aspiring young talents.

SMC Sgt. Nick Kimmel (Ret.) grew up in Moses Lake and was a standout baseball player for Moses Lake High School. Nick was offered a baseball scholarship but instead joined the Marines in 2008. On December 1, 2011, Nick was building a patrol base for the Georgian army just south of the Kajaki Dam in southern Afghanistan. He was standing on the forks of a tram, ensuring a guard post’s roof was square. When Nick jumped from the forks, he landed on a 40-pound improvised explosive device (IED).

Nick woke up three days later at Walter Reed National Medical Center and found he had lost both legs and an arm. While there, he had surgery every other day for an entire month. On January 1, 2012, Nick flew with his father, Rick, to Naval Medical Center San Diego for his outpatient and physical therapy. Doctors told him it would take thirteen to fifteen months to walk on prosthetics —he did so in seven.

Growing at home in

Cascade Valley By Shawn Erin Photography by Rosalie Black

W

hen Jennifer Bonato graduated from high school, she didn’t uproot herself for college. In fact, she grew roots right at home, at the house she helped build, in a huge garden. Bonato said she sold the vegetables and flowers from her first garden and after all the hard work, had earned about $1,000, which she was excited about. Telling the story now, she laughs because her silly garden has grown from a trivial hobby to a successful business. “We opened the business officially last spring. The family has always wanted to own a business and after considering the options, this one is the best fit. I started growing as a hobby for other people in 2010. Dad built a green house in 2009 and I was so excited for the quality of plants I decided to start growing extra starts and eventually it skyrocketed,” Bonato explained. With over a decade’s experience, it is no wonder the plants are so happy under Bonato’s watch. Over 40,000 seeds get planted between January and March in six green houses. In all, around 50,000 plants are grown and cared for throughout the season with upwards of 1,000 varieties, including flowers, herbs, vegetables, ground fruit and fruit trees, trees and bushes and ornamental grasses. Plants Bonato doesn’t grow herself, like berries and some perennials, she orders from Walla Walla Nursery, and a few varieties come from out of state. Careful planning, constant attention and a little luck are all necessary to make a venture like this possible. “For deadlines… you can’t fool around. For every kind of seed planted, conditions have to be just right,” Bonato said. Sometimes she has to choose between giving her attention to customers or the plants. As with most things, a little hard work reaps big rewards. Flower gardeners out there hear me - If you put in a little hard work mulching in the fall and weeding in the spring, with the right mix of flowers a big-impact garden can be fairly low-maintenance. When planting a flower garden, Bonato looks for a variety of color for her annuals (flowers you re-plant each year – however some reseed themselves), and usually goes with a color scheme for perennials (flowers that come back each year). She recommends tucking bright annuals in between perennials for a fresh looking garden each year, and says verbena, sweet potato vine, and calibrachoa (all annuals) are area staples. “My favorites change month to month, but some of my favorites are a lacy doily day lily that was pink (perennial)….a peony that was baby soft pink (perennial) and double pink petunias (annual). For some reason with flowers the pink ones catch my eye,” she said. Bleeding hearts (perennial) have been flying off the shelves this year, and it “would be a devastation if we couldn’t have [petunias]!” she admitted. Continued on page 32

For a vegetable garden in the Basin, tomatoes are definitely a staple, “because it’s so sunny here!” along with peppers, eggplant, cabbage and onions. “For herbs, rosemary, basil, thyme and lavender are absolute favorites,” she said. Although Bonato’s own yard and garden has become less of a priority, she said the business still gives her the time outside she needs to get out of the rat race of everyday life. “The benefits of sunshine are huge… troubles and stress… is gone,” she said, “The arrangement [nursery] is a garden in itself. I set my tables where I can see the gardens and enjoy the beauty while planting or making baskets… someday I’ll have a beautiful garden again!” To keep it fresh, Bonato makes sure to get new varieties in regularly and said her customers get excited and buy up anything blooming, especially in bright colors. You’ll be sure to see something new each time you go. Thankfully, Bonato has help. A couple high school students help out each week, but without the help of her dad, David Bonato, she wouldn’t be able to do it all. From building the first greenhouse to the newest one built this year, to building other equipment, David Bonato has volunteered his time for much-need labor and supported his daughter and the family business. “I call him ‘quality control,’” she said.

Function Form

or

Form Function

By Shawn Cardwell

O

ther Side of the Tracks by M R McDonald comprises more than 30 photographs of decaying urban scenery created by the application and tearing down of posters, stickers, etc. Collaborations: Wood + 1=3 by John Barany includes about 50 original sculpture collaborations. Opening night is 5 to 8 p.m. May 6 and the show will run through July 1. Carmen Rimple will show in the Museum Store Gallery. The two artists’ bodies of work are quite different but have

been shown together once in Wenatchee, later in Pasco and now at the Moses Lake Museum. The two men were once neighbors, and when Barany came around, foraging for wood from a fallen birch tree, a collaboration was born; ten of which pieces will be included in the show. McDonald hopes viewers do not look too hard at, or rather, in to, his work. “The thing I keep emphasizing is that all that’s important is what your eye actually sees…everything else is worthless,” he said. “The photos don’t have a message, no political content. I’m not providing that or asking anyone to believe something they wouldn’t normally believe. I want them to appreciate them as objects for the pure joy of your eye with wonder and puzzlement,” he explained. To achieve this, the content in the photographs is purposefully removed from its ‘place’ to create an abstract image focused on color, strong lines and balance, essentially replacing any functional property such as an advertisement, poster, word or staple with abstract form.”I’m after more serious accidental pell-mell piled on top of each other and next to each other, framed by the camera and made interesting,” McDonald said, “To include the punctuation the letters provide – the dynamics of the downward and upward thrusting, appreciate the dynamism of the marks, same with the staples…they are just little marks/punctuations that create their own patterns.” On retirement day Barany woke from a nap and decided it was time to use the lathe he had bought over 15 years prior. The lathe was bought second-hand but never used (two arms are needed to work a lathe and the previous owner had only one). He now has the second largest lathe

in Washington State and the largest working one, Barany claimed. His pieces can span up to four feet across. Barany has built up a vast collection of finished pieces and a rather large collection of unfinished ones, over 300 he said. One evening at a gallery opening, he noticed dozens of local artists all gathered there –‘with nothing else to do!’ Barany thought, ‘with time to gab?’ he wondered. With all that free time, Barany believed some could be recruited to help finish some of his unfinished collection. Two or three agreed right off the bat. Collaborations in the current gallery will include work with fabric, ceramic, glass, raku, textile and collage artists, and a photographer (of course). Throughout the collaborative process, Barany noticed all the artists, although they each managed their creativity in a different way, chose to maintain some of the wood’s character underneath the paint or other medium they worked with. In this way, the form of the wood was always functional. Additionally, many of the fine-art pieces, although sculptural, are functioning vases, bowls or boxes, as well. This is an interesting point where our two artists diverge. Form over function or function and form? McDonald had taken years’ worth of accumulated stickers on ragged electric boxes or an inch worth of slumping layers of torn posters from a round telephone pole and made them into a flat abstract image…

before Barany put them back on a round object! Barany also focuses in on images within McDonald’s photographs and draws out the nature of them for his sculpts, be that sinister like the ‘Terrorist Manifesto’ or otherwise, which McDonald generally tries to lose within the design of the image. Another question might be, ‘Who collaborates more, Barany or McDonald?’ As McDonald does not add nor take away from the scenes he captures, he relies on ‘collaborators’ – including rain or wind - to create the chaos he captures. Since it is not a purposeful relationship, is there a better word for this? What do you think? Attend the show and let us know! Or, share your thoughts with shawn@thevenuemag.com.

By Kim Jorgensen, Grant County Journal

EPHRATA – A lineup rich in rockabilly roots and steeped in southern charm is planned for the 2016 Basin Summer Sounds free outdoor music festival. The annual event takes place July 15-16 on the Grant County Courthouse main stage. The Friday headliner spot belongs to Barrett Baber, a finalist on Season 9 of NBC¹s The Voice. Closing out the festival Saturday evening are The Railers, described as ‘the Eagles, but with mandolin, violin and accordion, a female member and a whole lot of Red Bull.’ Opening for Basin Summer Sounds 2016 is the Nick Drummond Band. Drummond, formerly with popular northwest group The Senate, has been a performing songwriter for over 10 years, selling out multi-night runs at Seattle¹s Triple Door and Dimitriou¹s Jazz Alley. The Nick Drummond Band performs at 5 p.m. Spike and the Impalers fills the 7 p.m. Friday slot. Spike O¹Neill and Bob Rivers, co-hosts of a popular morning drive show on Seattle¹s classic rock station, KZOK, formed the group in 2004. Spike and the Impalers play covers of classics from the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, the Who, Guns N¹ Roses and other mainstays of rock ¹n roll. Barrett Baber had a life-changing experience in 2015, when he finished third on the popular reality show The Voice. From preacher¹s kid to Beale Street music rat to singer songwriter, Baber is known for his perfect blend of soul and country. He recently completed a Las Vegas residency opening for Rascal Flatts. Baber takes center stage at 9 p.m. The Saturday afternoon lineup includes Rylei Franks, Ranger & the Re-Arrangers, Briana Renea, Country Lips, Dylan Jakobsen and Brewer¹s Grade. Soap Lake singersongwriter Rylei Franks (12:15 p.m.) won the Gorilla Battle of the Bands in Spokane as a solo artist, and recently placed in the top five nationally in the acoustic artist category of the Vans Warped Tour Battle of the Bands. The 2007 Soap Lake High School graduate works at Quincy Valley Hospital as an activities director. Seattle Gypsy jazz band Ranger & the Re-Arrangers evokes the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Gypsy campsite. At the heart of their sound is Ranger Sciacca¹s sweet violin playing. The band¹s repertoire includes swing standards, traditional Gypsy melodies, the music of Django Reinhardt and Ranger¹s unique originals. Ranger & the Re-Arrangers perform at 1 p.m.

coming July 15 - 16

Next up at 2:30 is Briana Renea. The talented 21-yearold singer/songwriter from Canby, Oregon has made a name for herself in music circles throughout the Northwest and comes by her country roots naturally, growing up in a rural farm community working with livestock. Her newest EP, ‘Red Lips, White Lies,’ showcases her considerable vocal talents with edgy country and rock rhythms. Country Lips (4 p.m.) members Austin ‘Sheriff’ Jacobsen, Trevor Pendras, Miles Burnett, Hamilton Boyce, Thomas Beecham, Alex Leake, Jonah Byrne, Gus Clark and Kenny Aramaki are from Seattle. Their musical style is described as ‘party country.’ The group¹s most recent album features a mix of live staples and outlaw country originals from their past two albums. At 5:30 p.m., get ready for Dylan Jakobsen. The Seattle artist exploded on the country scene at age 22, making headlines and building a faithful following. Jakobsen uses feel-good harmonica riffs and vivid storytelling mixed with a driving rock beat to captivate his audience within the music. His new album is From Where I Began. Original, contemporary, diverse and entertaining are just a few of the words used to describe the experienced and fresh sounding group of talented performers known as Brewer¹s Grade (7:15 p.m.). With a sound that is right at home on any contemporary country radio station, the boys of Brewer¹s Grade are continuing their mission to achieve national success. Fans of Fleetwood Mac, Zac Brown Band and Little Big Town will embrace The Railers – brothers Jordan and Jonathan Lawson, Jonathan¹s better half Cassandra Lawson, and Tyler Oban – all classically trained musicians with instrumental prowess and a knack for lush vocal harmonies. The Railers made their Grand Ole Opry debut in December. Their first single, ‘Kinda Dig The Feeling,’ was featured on a recent episode of the ABC series ‘Nashville.’ The Railers perform at 9:15 p.m. Rounding out the weekend slate of activities are the Rotary-sponsored 3-on-3 basketball tournament, the Basin Summer Sounds Car & Toy Show and Shine, inflatable toys for the youngsters, food vendors, and the wine/beer garden. To become involved with the 2016 Basin Summer Sounds music festival, contact the Ephrata Chamber at ephratawachamber@gmail.com. See next page for lineups!

Masquers’ Mistress of Comedy, Joanne Bracht, teams up with the Prince of Prose, Matthew Weaver, to bring you the world premiere of Aces Are Feverish. Bracht is directing the original play penned by Weaver and the combination means the good times will roll.

Masquers Brings on Another World Premiere

“I wasn’t originally slated to direct this show,” says Joanne, “ but did not need much convincing to take the helm when the need arose. Matthew Weaver is a gifted playwright and I feel fortunate to be bringing Aces to life on stage. When I first started directing I was looking for a mystery, but found a comedy that I couldn’t resist, Sex Please We’re Sixty, and found my niche with This is an intricately woven comedies. But I get the best of both worlds with this show, a funny, murder-mystery. It doesn’t get any better than that. whodunit that will keep you

“A director is always nervous when they put out a call for the same time, it is laced with auditions, wondering if anyone will show up, if they will be right for enough comedy to keep you the parts, and if there will be enough actors to fill all the roles. But laughing. It just doesn’t get any the two days of auditions quickly alleviated any fears I might have better than that. had. Not only did I have enough actors show up, but I have some of the most talented actors I could ask for. The lead roles are very large, and demanding. These will require a huge effort. But my work as director will be minimal with the casting of Holly Petersen and Adam Zaleski in the lead roles of Ace Valentine and Derek Canavrel. They are phenomenal actors who both possess a captivating stage presence, along with a chemistry that will ignite the stage. The supporting cast is equally as talented and the way they respond to and play off each other is pure magic. Mistya Beyer plays the beautifully haunting, Missy Canavrel. Jeffrey Ames plays Freddy Berger (not French fries -- Berger), the gangster nightclub owner, with Jesse Huntwork as his go-to, muscle man, Joey. Nick Mahaney is the surly Officer Jones; Andrew Covarrubias, plays the severely shy, love-struck, Warren Derbin. Carol Boyce and Darry Pheasant are Harold and Ginger Payne, Ace’s money-grubbing sister and brother-in-law. Cheri Barbre and Mark Beyer expertly play Ace’s mother and father (who is also the coroner), Queenie and Doc Valentine. Theresa Freeman plays the erratic Victoria Rasputin, who has been holding a grudge against Ace for years because she showed up at their high school prom wearing the same dress. Randy Brooks plays the mysterious Mr. Coffey. Rounding out the cast are Allison Pheasant, Steven Yakish, Cynthia Beyer, Jessie Berry and Tony Hafner. Aces Are Feverish opens June 17 and runs three consecutive weekends through July 3. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2:00. Tickets may be purchased online at www.masquers. com or by calling the box office at (509) 246-2611 and leaving a message. Admission is $10 for seniors and students, $14 general admission, and children under 12 are $7.
