Warm up, chill out
N
ow, if you’ve lived here as long as many of us, you’d know there is always one stretch of days in early summer when the sun comes out, temperatures rise a bit and sheer wonder runs rampant. It’s not the air, the water, or even the feel of freshness. It’s just geography. We live where the sun shines and there is nothing that rejuvenates a soggy soul more quickly than those beautiful golden rays. When the warm summer weather kicks in, are you not hit with a renewed sense of optimism? Ah yes, we are ready for our famous summer sun. We know from experience, that showtime is coming fast, with events and activities centered on getting out of the house and going places. In our area community festivals come to life in the sunshine. Live music fills the air for all ages, all genres. Farmer Markets nourish our appetites and our creativity. Shops are full of treasures. Restaurants prepare cuisine of all flavors. Clever local theater productions entertain us. Nurseries and galleries and museums invite us to view nature and art and history in relaxing atmospheres.
Not only that, we happen to live close to some of the most beautiful lakes, resorts, hiking trails and camp sites in the Pacific Northwest. And did I mention wineries and golf courses? It is not hard to notice the hundreds of RV’s that roll in each year from Seattle and beyond because these people know what we have right here in our own backyard. Thousands of acres of summer wonderland. I find it refreshing that we don’t take things for granted. Everyone here has his or her own special relationship with the sun and the territory we call home. Eastern/Central Washington people know a good thing when they see it, feel it, hear it, photograph it, paint it, perform it, eat it, drink it, hike it, and simply live it. It’s our lifestyle to warm up, chill out and enjoy the sun. Does it get any better?

Members represent women in a variety of professions, business owners, community leaders, politicians, and retired women. Through local fundraising efforts and grants, Soroptimist has provided the following services to women and children in Grant County over the last four years:

The Soroptimist Live Your Dream Awards assists women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects. Each year, Soroptimist International Moses Lake awards $5,000 in education grants to women in Grant County who have overcome enormous obstacles before making decisions to change their lives and pursue their dreams. Live Your Dream Awards recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation. Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls is a program designed to help girls grow up to be strong, successful women. The program provides girls with access to professional role models,
career education and the resources to achieve their dreams. Soroptimist hosts an annual Fall Conference and a Spring Fashion Show and Luncheon for High School girls in Grant County. Girls are able to interact with professional women from the community while learning about career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, and overcoming obstacles to success and how to move forward after setbacks or failures. Both the Conference and the Spring Fashion Show provide girls with tools to grow and encourage them to DREAM.

In its 14th year, the largest free music festival in Washington
state showcases up-and-coming musicians, many of them from the Pacific Northwest, as well as seasoned performers. A band comprised of original Third Eye Blind members and a crowd favorite from 2016 will headline this year’s Basin Summer Sounds music festival, set for July 21-22. Spike and the Impalers fill the 9 p.m. Friday spot, while XEB performs Saturday at 9 p.m. The event main stage is located in front of the Grant County Courthouse.
Back by popular demand are
Spike and the Impalers (Friday, 9 p.m.). The classic rock band was formed over a decade ago, and continues to collect fans as members Jeff Kathan, Lynn Sorensen, Susan Kendall-Morais, Scott ‘Junior’ Adams, Manuel Morais, Steve Hannah and lead singer Spike O’Neill perform throughout the Puget Sound.
Keeping with the country theme,
Jones & Fischer takes the stage at
7 p.m. Darin Jones and Caleb Fischer are the front men of this Pacific Northwest-based group. Jones & Fischer was named the top country band in Washington by King 5’s "Best Of" in 2014 and 2015.
Home-grown Stoney River Band kicks off the 2017 Basin Summer Sounds lineup at 5 p.m. Lead singer/guitar player Gordy Grenier is from Coulee City; he is joined by band members Doug Thompson, John Tillman and Dave Bomstad. The group plays new and classic country favorites.
XEB brings together former and original members Kevin Cadogan, Tony Fredianelli and Arion Salazar of 90s group Third Eye Blind, known for hits "SemiCharmed Life" and "Jumper." Lead guitarist Cadogan penned 10 of the 14 songs on Third Eye Blind’s debut album in 1997. Fredianelli plays guitar, and bassist Salazar has written many songs, including TEB’s "Never Let You Go."
Also making a second appearance at Basin Summer Sounds is Brewer’s Grade (7 p.m.). The group has been delivering original country music since 2013. Zac Grooms (guitar, vocals) and Cody Christopherson (drums) have been performing together for 16 years; they are joined by brothers Al (guitar) and Nolan (bass) Hare, and fiddle player Joe Smart.
Nite Wave, Seattle’s favorite 80’s band, draws inspiration from Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, WHAM!, Spandau Ballet, The Police and other 80s super groups. Members Evan, Jeff, Dave, Jim and Michael have opened for Billy Idol. Nite Wave performs at 5:30 p.m. Briana Renea returns to her country roots, and
to BSS for the second year in a row, with a 4 p.m. show. Raised on a farm in Oregon, Briana released her first EP, "Red Lips White Lies," in 2015. Her original songs reflect her experiences growing up in a rural area.
Next up is
Ranger and the Re-Arrangers
(2:30 p.m.). BSS audiences will be familiar with Ranger Sciacca and his band mates, who first brought their gypsy jazz sound to the festival in 2016. Ranger and fellow members Dave Stewart, Mick Nicholson, Jeffrey Moose and Mike Sciacca showcase swing standards, gypsy melodies and unique originals.
Alec Shaw (and Friends)
opens the Saturday schedule at 1 p.m. The Seattle-based musician/producer first picked up the guitar in fourth grade, and soon added singing/songwriting to his repertoire. His debut album, "Car Town," was released in 2016. An eclectic group of nine musicians join Alec during live shows.

y dad, Harold Wood, was one of the smartest, cheeriest, calmest, most successful people I have ever known. Being around him just sort of made you happy, even when politics had him spouting off like a crazed Archie Bunker. The odd part of it, when I think about it, is that I never thought of him as being crippled. Neither my sisters nor I thought of him as being anything but perfect. There were no imperfections that we could see. He was just Daddy and Dad - the loving father who held us on his shoulders during parades, read us books, helped us build tree forts and taught us to drive. Although he was different from other men it wasn’t until I was in high school, at least that long, that I really became aware of it, before I took stock of the man before me and compared him with other men. That part of it puzzles me—that I could live nearly two decades with a father and not see this flaw. Perhaps it was because he didn’t seem to see it either. It must have been a tragic day for his parents, the day this first child came into the

Every problem had a solution. This philosophy has served me well through life. As a jokester he was a failure. The man couldn't tell a joke to save his life. He'd laugh so hard he couldn't finish or, more often than not, he'd forget the punch line and leave us hanging. Sadly, I inherited this from him. But in reality he was a genius. In the 1930s when he needed a way to get through the snow to check out stumpage for logging he created a snowmachine. To make dragging bagged elk and deer out during hunting season he invented a big-wheeled cart contraption. In later life he invented True Talk, a device that went from one motorcycle helmet to another so the rider could talk to his passenger. (Evil Knievel was going to endorse this one but then was unfortunately critically banged up during one of his escapades.) For years one of Dad's side business was Frame Ups, also known as Easy Ups, devices that hold 2x2s and 2x4s and used to make greenhouses and other things. He once showed me a drawing for a non-electric water pump that was so ingenious a child could understand the concept. He kept little notebooks full of drawings and numbers and ideas and every morning during breakfast wrote ideas down on napkins. He was an amazing man who was overflowing with joy and exuberance for life. In his 80s he was still going out to a little mill he had in his shop and working. Dad died many years ago and when my sisters went through his things they saved out his work boots for me. Even as a child I loved his boots and shoes because they were so obviously his. I’d race through the front door as a kid and never have to ask whose boots were on the back step. I’d glance at them and know he was home. Strangely lopsided with odd bumps and lumps, they were the exact contour of his feet—the same feet that walked beside me through childhood; that hiked with me, stood beside me on the bank of a good trout stream, led me down the aisle at my wedding, and paced the floor with my crying infants. Dad’s feet carried him well through life. Imperfect though they were, they carried him through a long life of goodness, kindness and success.

They are expecting a contemplative and quiet week end in a remote cabin in the woods. What they find is a remote cabin which has also been booked by a much younger couple with a very different world view. Tony (Christopher Longstreet) and his girlfriend, Jill (Shaina Longstreet) are a much younger yuppy couple. They just want to have a good time in their own way which does not at all fit with contemplation.
