Growing up with the gate open
H
e wasn’t really a horse. He was a Welsh pony and an ornery one. I was only seven years old, my sister nine, when we looked up from outdoor play to see our dad coming down the driveway with an old pickup equipped with tall racks to haul home the pony he surprised us with. Jumping up and down with sheer exuberance, we could hardly contain our excitement. Spike would be his name. We lived in rural Moses Lake in the wide-open spaces where our imaginations could run with the gate wide open. My sister and I had costumes and would trade off who got to be Dale Evans and who got to be Roy Rogers, pretending to save the world. What we had been missing was Roy’s famous horse, Trigger, and his wonder dog, Bullet. Until Spike arrived. Now, we were fully able to orchestrate the needed teamwork between horse, riders and a wire-hair terrier barking and nipping at our heels. We spent hours a day learning the art of keeping a horse between us and the ground. We would ride double, because it was too hard to take turns. We became more than Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. We built jumps with rocks and boards and did our best to convince Spike to step over them, imagining we were polished equestrian jumpers. We would
shimmy up his neck and stand on his back, then slide off his back side, pretending to be circus entertainers. In our minds Spike could do it all. In his mind he would, until he would not. When he decided it was time to stop with the day’s imaginations, he would turn towards his corral and with us or without us, kick into a full canter and make a straight shot for it. Done for the day. He was rewarded lavishly with a fresh apple and lots of hugs and snuggles. Now, years and years later, I still smile when I see a horse. Though smaller than a real horse, Spike was larger than life to me. He was a teacher who taught me to hold on to what makes me happy. If it tries to buck you off, hold on even tighter. Better yet, he taught me it is not enough to know how to ride, one must know how to fall. And, it doesn’t matter how many times you fall...what matters is that you get back up, brush off the dirt, dry your eyes and try again. Dreams don’t work unless you do.

Rick Serra hails from the San Francisco Bay Area where he formed "Rick Serra and the Blues Wave" in 1982. The Blues Wave was a main stay in the SF club scene for over two decades. Tom Brimm on Bass spent close to 20 years with "Too Slim and the Taildraggers" entertaining audiences around the world. Justin Warren on Guitar brings it in a Big way. Playing for decades, performing at "House of Blues" from coast to coast, driving force behind "Moral Crux", Justin brings incredible energy to the show. Thursday, August 17th at 8:30 pm Center Field Stage
We were born and raised in The City of Roses, Portland, OR, but our hearts beat to the sounds of country life. It began by going on road trips, camping, and fishing with our family, listening and singing to country music classics. In 2012, the fire of country music was lit in us, we started playing every available moment of every day! From then on we had a dream; that was to be on stage in front of thousands of fans, who share the same love for country music that we do.

Children of all ages enjoy laughing and talking with our fun loving robots. We hope you do too. —Jules Bamberger About Jules orn in San Francisco, Jules Bamberger, a graduate of Sonoma State University, was invited to do his post graduation work in Mulheim Germany at Stabsabteilung Forschung und Entwicklung. He apprenticed under the guidance of the famed eccentric, Professor Ingo Doering, PhD. Herr Doering died in a fierce laboratory explosion while experimenting with a new secret chemical process. To this day nobody really knows what he was doing. Fortunately, Jules was not close enough to be injured. As part of the original Silicon Valley phenomena, Jules developed Atlas Robotics and worked for now famous computer and Internet companies. When not engaged with his robot work, Jules enjoys a rural lifestyle raising sheep, goats, chickens, dogs, and cats. He also tends a small vineyard and olive grove.

phrata, Washington is home to Emma Gunderson, where she lives with her parents, Jason and Jenny Gunderson and her sisters, Hannah and Ruby. Emma is a 2016 graduate of Ephrata High School. She is attending Big Bend Community College to obtain her Associates of Arts Degree and then plans transfer to Washington State University – Tri-Cities to study in the area of Viticulture and Enology. Emma enjoys training and competing with her horse, Hank. She is an active member of the 4-H group, the White Trail Riders, where she has held many positions in office and participated in various community service projects. Most recently, Emma and the other members collected food for the local food bank. Emma just completed her third year competing at the State level in Puyallup. When Emma is not working with her horse, you can find her employed as a barista at Brewed Bliss in Ephrata, or baling hay for a local farmer. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as her additional horse, Cisco. Prior to graduating from high school, Emma was involved with the Ephrata High School Cheer Squad, ASB, Choir, the Smokiam WAHSET team, and National Honor Society. She also worked as a camp counselor at OMNY (Outreaching Ministry to Neighborhood Youth) for 4 summers, working with local children in the community. Emma had the privilege of being crowned as the 2015 Miss Colorama Rodeo, traveling around the state representing the Ridge Riders and the Colorama Rodeo in Grand Coulee at other rodeos and parades. “It is such a fulfilling experience to be a representative of a rodeo in our area. I enjoy being a role model for the youth who look up to rodeo royalty and understand the importance of having a positive impact on my community.” As a rodeo queen, the following quote resonated with Emma, “Remember the crown that sits upon your head sits there not as a symbol of royalty that might denote one who is to be served, but it sits there as a symbol of one who gives herself, voluntarily, for the benefit of those by whose name she is called.” -Unknown

omas Garcilazo, a native of Mexico City, was introduced at an early age to his family heritage and tradition of “La Charreria” which is a skill performed through the generations only by the Mexican Charro. Charros take extreme pride in their highly developed horsemanship and roping abilities. Tomas, a third generation Charro, has devoted his life to sharing Mexico’s National Sport La Charreria with the world. A lifetime of preparation, performances and competition continue to require total self-discipline, patience and commitment by Tomas to training and mastering the artistry of La Charreria. Incorporating a display of refined horsemanship while demonstrating maguey rope artistry in his performances bring audiences to their feet applauding in appreciation of his skills. Tomas devotes
countless hours to his horses, who with their athletic ability and intelligence willingly execute maneuvers when asked by their friend. It is a rare and honorable experience to witness these partnership performances. Tomas has performed throughout Europe, Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. He has appeared on Broadway in New York City and toured the U.S. with the Will Rogers Follies, an acclaimed 6 time Tony Award winning show. He was a featured performer for two years at Disney’s Wild West Show in Paris, France plus the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show touring Holland and Germany. Tomas has performed numerous times for Mexico’s Presidents along with guest performances at the U.S. White House and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Tomas resides in southern California and continues to share his legacy with audiences at rodeos, stock shows, horse shows and equine events internationally. His awards are many including the PRCA 2007, 2012 and 2013 Specialty Act of the Year award at the Las Vegas National Rodeo Finals. Tomas Garcilazo’s proficiency as a skilled horseman and rope artist defines him as one of the finest Charros presenting La Charreria today.

Tough Enough to Wear
Pink
The Columbia Basin Rodeo Association is proud to partner up with the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation.
T
hursday night’s rodeo is dedicated to “Tough Enough to Wear Pink”, a program about increasing awareness of breast cancer. Most PRCA rodeos including the National Finals in Las Vegas dedicate one night to this cause. We’re not Just “cowboys in pink shirts”. The Columbia Basin Rodeo Association committee is taking this program a step further to include a presentation to honor lost loved ones and celebrate those who have won their battle, and to raise money for the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation. The release of 200 pink balloons is a tradition and a powerful memorial that brings out emotion
in even the toughest cowboys. We have chosen to support the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation in our community to help local cancer patients with financial burdens, counseling, support groups, medical advice and many other services. The Moses Lake Round-Up Rodeo will continue to support Thursday night’s “Tough Enough to Wear Pink”. We would like to thank the Columbia Basin community for coming to our rodeo and supporting this important cause. You can learn more about the history of “Tough Enough to Wear Pink”, at: http//toughenoughtowearpink.com.

One Story At A Time
t's about people, all working their own way, in their own place, in the world of Agri-Culture. There is a comfort in being exposed to farm people. Follow along as I share their conversations with you. If you listen, you will find that most of these people would trade nothing for the lessons learned – lessons that produce strength of character and solid foundations for generations to come. I hope you enjoy the daily glimpses into the lives of the people as much as I have getting to photograph them. Sue Tebow 509.760.0503

A visit from Katie Frank
T
his beautiful expectant mother is Katie Frank, a Western Horseman journalist. She came to visit me at my place and we enjoyed a comfortable conversation over a glass of ice tea. We talked about the hard working, passionate people of agri.CULTURE. I couldn’t have been more honored or thrilled to meet her and talk about our shared values of country living. Katie will be writing an article on Agri.CULTURE to appear in an upcoming issue.
WH was awarded the prestigious Overall General Excellence Award at the American Horse Publications annual conference and awards ceremony.
"I
t’s a blessing to work for Western Horseman, a magazine that allows me to meet hardworking, passionate people in the stock horse industry and to share their stories with our subscribers. I walk away from every interview inspired and feeling like I’ve made a new friend. It’s exciting to think that my daughter, due in August, will be raised around the morals and traditions we’ve all worked so hard to keep alive. The Western culture is not dying out, it’s shifting generations, and it’s our job as equine journalists to adjust our stirrups, shorten our reins, and keep celebrating great horses and horsemen and -women."
