I
t goes without saying the portion of this fine earth we call home is largely agricultural and livestock based and life on the farm or ranch is celebrated in conversation with a large part of our population. Being the daughter of Mel Updegrave, I have shared many a chuckle with local farmers and ranchers recalling stories about my dad and then my sharing stories with them of treasured moments as a child under his watch. My dad was a friend to the farmer/rancher spending his life energy making sure water was reaching the crop and sustaining the livestock. Hard work was the way of each day. Doing whatever it took to get a job done was a way of life. Never give up. Ever. This lifestyle rings true with the farming families in all our region, each strategically watching the progression of
the crop in the field and preparing for harvest physically, mentally, and with high hopes for the reward of pure dedication. Ranching families are tending to the new livestock being born and added to their herds, working round the clock keeping watch, so no harm comes to them. These hardworking people feed us. It is not easy. Farming and ranching demand a high degree of sagacious business savvy to keep up with technology, the market, the climate, government, the constant challenge of new demands and daily unknowns. It requires gumption. If you listen carefully to their family stories, however, you will hear the appreciation of full beauty in their surroundings and peace in the silence of a still early sunrise. The start of another new day. A day to be glad they have.

aised in Corvallis, Oregon, Jackson Michelson kicked off his country career on the West Coast, carving out a sound that blended the rootsy twang of the American South with the sunny, feelgood spirit of the Pacific Coast. Nashville — the official capital of country music — lay 2,300 miles to the southeast, but Michelson focused on his home turf first, building an audience of West Coast fans who were drawn to his high-energy shows and relatable songwriting. I
n 1972, a group of students at the University of Washington, led by Josefina Jaramillo Alvarez, united in a common goal to demonstrate their pride in their Mexican heritage through music and dance. They questioned the lack of a Mexican dance group at the UW. In many ways it was a product of the Civil Rights and Chicano movements. The dedication of the dancers is seen during performances in their intricate footwork and refined choreography. The richness of the culture can be seen in the beautiful costumes from the various regions of Mexico. The high energy and enthusiasm of the dancers transcends the stage and is felt by the audience at each performance. Bailadores de Bronce portrays the positive aspects of the Mexican culture in the broader community, breaking down cultural barriers and building bridges within the community.

Justin Warren on guitar brings incredible energy to the show. Lee Lester on drums is a local favorite providing solid grooves. In 1981, a local farmer, Dennis Higashiyama, was working on his tractor and listening to America’s favorite radio host, Paul Harvey, have a conversation about the necessity of farming and farmers. The woman in this conversation expressed her opinion by saying, “I don’t understand why we need farmers, don’t they know we can just go to the grocery store and buy what we need?” Local farmers were outraged. In our region we live in a world of agriculture and are familiar with the faces of the hardworking families who bring food to our table (and our stores), however, this conversation illustrated clearly how farmers and consumers had drifted apart – leaving many people with little or no understanding about how food actually arrives on their grocery shelves. Because of this, on the second weekend in September, every year, the Quincy Valley community prepares a unique celebration called Quincy Farmer-Consumer Awareness Days (FCAD), which educates the consumer on the farm to market process. For farmers, FCAD is an opportunity to show the fruits of their labor and demonstrate the tools and techniques used in their work. For the public, the event has tours of area processing plants and farms, displays of farm equipment, informational and commodity booths, and a farmers market. The event profiles our local farm families, our abundant farmlands and the businesses that are determined to stay on the cutting edge to provide the very best food possible. So, the next time you say, “Pass the potatoes, please,” remember the dedicated farmers at the heart of our rural communities. J
J Harrison grew up in the small town of Okanogan located in Northern Washington State. JJ was a school teacher for 8 years before he decided to leave behind a steady job to pursue his dream of being a Rodeo clown. This is no surprise to those that know him and his love for making people laugh. JJ was voted by his peers as barrel man/clown for the 2012 National Finals Rodeo. What makes JJ so different you ask? Why is he in such high demand with Rodeos across the country? Because he is an entertainer. He doesn’t go by a script; he reacts to what’s happening in the arena. He doesn’t use the same jokes Rodeo after Rodeo. Our fans and kids LOVE him and you will too! JJ started out riding bucking horses and bulls as a teen and then being on Washington State University’s Rodeo team. Unfortunately, after being stomped on by a bull, he decided to stick to roping. But even then, Rodeo was his second love behind his passion for teaching. He went on to get a master’s degree from Arizona’s Grand Canyon University. Another unique fact about JJ Harrison is that he is the only Rodeo clown with a master’s degree. Not only is he an outstanding entertainer, he is also just one of the best dang guys you’ll ever meet.

essica Blair, of Athens Tennessee, practically grew up on the back of a horse. Raised on her grandfather’s horse and beef cattle farm, Jessica learned at an early age that she wanted horses to be a main stay in her life, however at this time she didn’t realize she would literally be trusting her life to them. While attending college at the University of Tennessee in 2005, Jessica went to visit Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede, where she first saw the old western arts of trick and roman riding. Immediately she knew that she could and would be doing this. Jessica stated that “It was simply the most glamorous daring thing I had even seen done on the back of a horse.” Within six month Jessica was one of the stars and featured trick riders of the Dixie Stampede. Riding at the Stampede had Jessica performing her death defying stunts in front of more than one million amazed fans a year! After being introduced to her new found skill, Jessica sought after ways to make this lifestyle more personal to her. Taking the necessary steps to form a business out of pleasure, Jessica purchased her own horse and trick saddle to gain her start in performing on her own in rodeos and equine events across the country. Spending hours a day training her horse Maverick, Jessica put in the time through the blood and sweat, and finally performed solo at her first rodeo in 2007. Since then, this daring blonde has dazzled thousands of crowds all across the country performing stunts such as the Death Drag, Liberty Stand, and her signature Stroud Layout where she appears to be standing on the side of her horse. All done while she trusts her horse to safely carry her around the arena at dangerous speeds! Jessica’s abilities don’t just stop at trick riding; she is also introducing her new act in 2012 where she roman rides on her team of grey horses Moose and Goose. During this act she will stand on her two horses as they gallop side by side weaving and splitting fire torches, and the grand finally of jumping through a ring of fire! All 3 working as one! “I trust these horses” she states, “probably a little too much.” While Jessica realizes this fast paced lifestyle won’t last forever, she attends to make the most of it while she can. “There is nothing better than the looks on the children’s faces while I perform, or the hug from a shy little girl who tells me she wants to be a trick rider one day; God has given me this ability, and I intend to give a smile to every member of every audience!”

Pink The Columbia Basin Rodeo Association is proud to partner up with the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation.
T
hursday night’s rodeo is dedicated to “Tough Enough to Wear Pink”, a program about increasing awareness of breast cancer. Most PRCA rodeos including the National Finals in Las Vegas dedicate one night to this cause. We’re not Just “cowboys in pink shirts”. The Columbia Basin Rodeo Association committee is taking this program a step further to include a presentation to honor lost loved ones and celebrate those who have won their battle, and to raise money for the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation. The release of 200 pink balloons is a tradition and a powerful memorial that brings out emotion
in even the toughest cowboys. We have chosen to support the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation in our community to help local cancer patients with financial burdens, counseling, support groups, medical advice and many other services. The Moses Lake Round-up rodeo will continue to support Thursday night’s “Tough Enough to were Pink”. We had a record attendance for 2017, so thank you to the Columbia Basin community for coming to our rodeo and supporting this important cause. am one fortunate gal… my parents were horse lovers. My Dad was like the horse whisperer. He worked with trotter horses and he and his brother had a pack string. My parents never pushed us kids to like horses, but it was a natural fit for me. I showed successfully in halter class, fitting and showing, gaming and everything I could. Back then we had barn horses and taught them to do it all. We had to just figure it out. After I graduated from high school I went to Spokane and was a barn manager on an Arabian Ranch. I worked there for 6 years; it was the cowgirls dream… I was 18 years old, had a dually, a credit card and a dog. I was able to travel from Southern California to Canada with the horses. I also worked at Play Fair the last year it was open in Spokane. There is an old saying… “as soon as you buy your ranch you don’t have time to ride.” That’s me. I have 2.5 horses on a place that I take care of on my own. The .5 is my pony that I bought just because I wanted one. I have remodeled my home, built barns and shelters and I work two jobs. I am a woman on a mission. I have a plan. I am in the process of picking up a new slant load trailer and selling my old one and I am getting a flatbed so I can haul my own hay. I am proud to say that I have accomplished so much but there’s always a tradeoff. Do I wish someone was here to share
this with me? Yes. But on the flip side, I get to make my own decisions, it’s my check book and I can do what I want. I really love it here, it’s quite and reminds me of where I grew up. Living here with my horses is my therapy, it’s calming. I can’t picture any other way of life.”

Proceeds from these relief sales support the international relief, developemnt and service ministries of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). n May 19th at the Moses Lake Event Center 153 local children and 115 adults experienced a day to explore and discover the world of dinosaurs through hands-on exhibits, including a dinosaur fossil dig pit, dinosaur swamp, a jungle, fizzing experiments, and much more. This incredibly successful DINO EXTRAVAGANZA is only the first of other events being planned by a dedicated board of directors and committed community members with a vision. The vision being to have a permanent facility for a nonprofit children’s museum while hosting more pop-up events in the meantime. The next event is scheduled for December! Children’s museums are places where children learn through play and exploration in environments designed just for them. Reflecting their diverse communities, children’s museums create playful, interactive learning experiences. In an increasingly complex world, children’s museums provide a place where all kids can learn through play with the caring adults in their lives. The Tree Fort Children’s Museum will be at the Farmers Market during the summer with information/brochures, and a hands-on activity. Community members and businesses are encouraged to participate in the vision by donating supplies of all types for new exhibits, and/or volunteering to help with an event.
