For the love of it.
T
he month of February brings a day to be...well...in love. The whole nation gets another chance to give attention to one’s personal relationship with his/her chosen sweetie. Why is your relationship so great? How can you make it even better? You know what I am talking about, don’t you? It’s time to perhaps examine any pebbles that have gained in size over the past year. Boulders in the progress to the relationship you desire. We all know if we really want something bad enough we will make a decision to make it work (even if it seems impossible), and if we don’t want it bad enough, we will make an excuse. It is easy to blame anything gone wrong on the simple hormonal sugar thing, with a bit of sour grapes stirred in, and left over stuff we carry around in our wheelbarrow of past hurts that should have been dumped, but we hang onto them, instead.
Adding this to the lack of sunshine, inadequate sleep, and that dang Wizard of Oz nightmare that keeps drifting in and out of our lives, it’s a very good thing Valentine’s Day comes around once a year! So here’s a little suggestion from one girl who still worries sometimes about flying monkeys and if the yellow brick road she’s on is heading in the right direction? For the girls, think of all the ways you respect your man, and tell him (show him) so. For the guys, think of all the ways you love your girl, and tell her (show her) so. It is an amazing cycle, the love and respect thing. One cannot happen without the other. It’s a divine design. Did you know that already? Good for you!

Winter snow in the
Columbia Basin Keeping solidly on our feet by Lenore Plassman illustrated by Rohvannyn Shaw
I
’m wading into a hot cup of Stash’s licorice spice tea, feeling like I live on a three acre snow covered island. A part of me yells: ‘Liar! Fibber!’ And its true. Our Dunne Alba is covered with snow. But, well, we are not snow bound or snow captured due to Molly the farrier who lives down the road. (She ably and kindly trims Peter burro’s hoofed toes when they get too long.) I called her, asking whether she knew anyone who could plow our 2 block long driveway/access road. I heard the concern in her voice when I reported that both me and my sister had fallen as we’d walked in from the road cause we’d parked the car out there instead of it getting stuck in a drift. She called a very nice gentleman named Kevin. Within 2 hours he had a backhoe attacking the mean driveway snow. I paid him a little cash cause the monster machine has a habit of guzzling diesel. (Somebody has to pay for its dinner.) He didn’t want to take the money but he deserved it and more, having answered the call and then cleared the driveway with care and consideration. Before Kevin, Bennys. What you may ask is Bennys? Its a comfortable square box of a tire shop. Benny is proud of his newly built shop. He cleans the bathrooms himself! He ensures that the tires on my Toyota are on well and in good order. He is the man behind the studded tires that keep me and mine from harm and steep ditches. I sit in his foyer, leafing through car magazines as his workers mount and balance my tires. When the winter tires are on and I’ve handed him my plastic money, I tell him I’ll see him in the Spring. He wishes me well as I head out the door to roads that will soon be coated with snow and ice. So we three, my husband and sister and me, are not alone here in Grant county. The wheat kernels that we grind into flour for our weekly batch of bread is bought from the Columbia Bean company, out Wheeler. Hawks and magpies seek food, sailing above chopped corn fields as we drive down road 7 and then over to M and finally Wheeler.

Post office clerks keep our packages safe for us until we can make it into town. Safeway employees bustle, unpacking fruits and veggies, joking with each other, one lady in particular asked after my welfare one morning when it was apparent that I was not feeling well. Just down from Safeway is the Thai Cuisine cafe. Now that we’re eating mostly vegan fare, this Thai cafe has become a home away from Dunne Alba. Bright green veggies nestled with tofu slices, peanut sauce sparked with spicier fish sauce. Sometimes rice and sometimes noodles. The Thai omelet looks like a holiday package. Its square! And just like a gift wrapped in bright paper, the omelet’s shape invites the diner to dig in, discovering its delights hidden within. The owner is a charming lady named Jamsi who loves to share a joke. She welcomes us in from the cold winter breezes, adding 5 starred spice to hubby’s curry, joking that his food is totally red now. This network of helpers keeps us solidly on our feet. I mustn’t forget the Health Pantry. The ladies there stock nutritional yeast and sesame seeds by the pound. These two foods are the humble backbone of our diet: who can live without homemade lemony hummus or lentils larded with cheesy nutritional yeast? Not us. Not just humans live here on Dunne Alba. We share life with three felines and two dogs, five chickens and a turkey and yes, Peter burro. I’ve shared joy and deep sorrow with their doctors and their doctor’s helpers. Spring is on its way. With the warming weather will come a time of trial for our Leah dog. The ligament connecting her canine knee ruptured. She’s still pretty young so we humans have decided that she’ll go through surgery and then rehab for weeks and weeks. Dr. Maier’s kind and steady face comes to mind as I envision what the next weeks will be as I write this. Here’s to this web of reaching out, human hand to human hand in the Columbia Basin! And here’s to respect for all life, humans, furry or feathered beings.

I
“ remember when I took this photograph. I was laying in the snow, wind howling...the air reminding me of every filling, every tooth in my head. My eyes watered, but they would not close. I could not have dressed warmer...I gave it all I had. I looked at the landscape and somehow I felt the millions of crystals blowing, swirling, drifting, were bigger than anything going on in town. Bigger than anything on a radio or TV or computer. Because this landscape was a force, and if you did not navigate it, you died with it. It was here first, it would be there last. And there is not one thing anyone can do about it. I pretty much have nothing but respect for that. ~Robin L Green

Hal Ketchum
I'm the Troubadour
F
ive years ago, Hal Ketchum packed up his guitars and left Nashville, turning his back on a successful, 20+ year career in country music. He'd already sold more than 5 million albums, racking up a half-dozen Top 10 hits — including staples like "Small Town Saturday Night" and "Hearts Are Gonna Roll" — along the way. But Ketchum was exhausted, and his multiple sclerosis, a condition that often left him partially paralyzed, wasn't making matters any easier. He wanted to go home. And that's exactly what the singer/songwriter did, heading back to Texas for some peace, quiet, and serious introversion. "I was hiding out," he admits. "I'd been in the public for so long. I didn't even go into town; I had my daughter bring me groceries. I develop a form of agoraphobia, really. I found pleasure in watching the stars at night and watching the sun during the afternoon. I also put out a lot of bird feeders and basically talked to myself all day long." It was a relaxing time. Try as he might, though, Ketchum couldn't stop his musical wheels from spinning. As he sat on the porch of his home — a renovated, 19th century grist mill in the middle of the Texas Hill Country — he began documenting everything he saw. He jotted down the memories that crossed his mind, too. Before long, new songs began appearing. The process felt entirely different from Ketchum's final years in Nashville, back when songwriting had been a job. This time around, songwriting was something more. It was personal. It was casual. It was also rallying cry for Ketchum, who decided he wasn't ready to give up music, after all. Those new songs became the foundation of Ketchum's newest album, I'm the Troubadour. Recorded in a series of single takes, I'm the Troubadour is the sound of an artist finding his own redemption in the strum of an acoustic guitar, the boom of a kick drum, and the trill of an upright piano. It's an album inspired by years of struggle, performed by a songwriting legend who's glad to finally get his groove back. On I'm the Troubadour, Ketchum ditches the country rule book and tackles a combination of folk, blues, and soul music instead, tying the whole thing together with the rootsy rumblings of his studio band — whose members include guitarist Kenny Grimes and drummer Rick Richards — and the same croon that helped make him a permanent member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1994. I'm the Troubadour also marks his first release for Music Road
Records, an Austin-based label co-run by folk artist Jimmy LaFave. Strangely enough, the latest release from Ketchum — now 61 years old — brings to mind the thrill of his earliest albums. Back then, Ketchum was a young cabinet maker from Gruene, TX, who wrote his own songs about love, longing, and life in the American South. He hit the country market shortly after artists like Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, and Travis Tritt, three like-minded troubadours who also wrote their own material. A bemused Earle called the movement "the great credibility scare of 1990," laughing at the fact that country music — typically a conservative genre — was suddenly being steered by young, creative wild men. I'm the Troubadour has a similar sound, a left-of-center immediacy that makes it one of the most important albums in Ketchum's career. After logging nearly two decades on the roster of Curb Records, Ketchum has earned the right to call his own shots. He isn't following any rules. He isn't catering to any trends. Instead, he's simply following his muse wherever it leads, from the bluesy, roadhouse rock & roll of the title track — a biographical song about touring across the country, one stage at a time — to the jazzy swell of "New Mexican Rain." Meanwhile, he also puts an updated stamp on two of his older tunes, even turning "I Know Where Love Lives" into a surprise duet with blues singer Tameca Jones. "I'd reached a point during my time in Nashville where I'd fallen into that mill worker mentality, where you're only as good as your last record," Ketchum remembers. "If the phone didn't ring for two days, I was crushed. I'd worked myself into this odd place, where you have to be validated by your previous accomplishments. To be liberated from that kind of pressure is really fantastic. The pressure's off now. I'm just old Hal now. I'm 61 years old, and I still have a lot to say." Half a decade ago, Ketchum thought he'd permanently closed the book on his songwriting career. Thankfully, I'm the Troubadour starts a new chapter.

Moses Lake ROCKS A big thank you to Fawn Conner for starting Moses Lake Rocks, and giving our community the opportunity to make more quality memories with our families!
You can ROCK, too. Join the facebook group “Moses Lake ROCKS and get started!
By Shawn Cardwell
I
spy with my little eye... ART! And you can, too, all around town thanks in large part to Fawn Conner and her grand kids, Aiden and Natalie, who started the Moses Lake Rocks group. To be clear, we're not talking rock music here - we are talking real-on-the-ground-rocks. Rocks which group members, and anyone else who wants to, gathers, paints however they choose (or maybe puts a sticker on it, or colors with Sharpies), seals and places around town. Finders of rocks are encouraged to take photos and post to the Facebook group, to re-hide or cherish and keep the rock, whichever one prefers. Conner's family was inspired by the rock group of Whidbey Island which has over 19,000 Facebook members. Conner picked up tips from here and there, was inspired by others (like the group in Texas who actually BUYS their rocks, since there aren't any in the natural landscape), and is motivated by her own desire to get outside and be active. Since August 2016 the Moses Lake Rocks Facebook group has grown to over 1500 people. Rocks can also hold important messages. Conner did a series of rocks with information on CMT, a disorder that affects the nerves in the arms and legs, and then donated money for each reporting that one of the rocks were found.
"It really brought the community together," Conner said, "...We have great parks, a great downtown and people need to get out of their cars, get exercise and do stuff with their families. I've found parks I didn't know we had!" Conner said businesses get involved, too, by donating items for fundraisers and prizes, putting coupons on rocks and even allowing rocks to be hid in their store. Be sure to ask permission to hide rocks in or near businesses, first. "Just think safety," she said, "Use common sense and think forward." The group meets about once a month in various locations in the community. They go where they are invited, Conner said, which so far has included free public events and more recently at the Monroe House, an assisted living facility. Attendees are asked to donate $5 per family to help cover the cost of paint, brushes and sealers. Moses Lake Rocks rocks have gone out all over Washington State and as far as Italy! Conner has painted about 700 rocks and hidden almost as many, and is sure there is well over 1000 painted rocks hidden around town. You, too, can rock! Join the Facebook group Moses Lake Rocks to learn about upcoming rock painting parties and get tips on how to paint the best rocks possible. Get out there and find some, too!

ainting Rocks- What do you use to create your art is one of the most common questions on the Moses Lake ROCKS website. You can use a pencil, colored pencil, oil pastels, or crayons. Sharpies work well and can be used for writing, outlining, and drawing. Be careful when sealing sharpies. They can run if you spray too much sealant on at once or spray too closely. Posca paint pens are amazing paint pens. They cover well, dry quickly, and don’t smear. Acrylic craft paint, enamel paint, and spray paint are all great choices too. Myself and my family use a combination of mediums on a rock. The most important thing is that you SEAL your rock, covering the art and the writing on the back, before placing it. You can use any clear spray paint, gloss or matte, your choice. Modge Podge Sealant Spray or marine safe spray called Moeller Clear Coat. Trying a new sealer that you can use indoors. Heard about it from Continued on page 41

ocks are bringing joy to the residents of Moses Lake in a very unexpected way. It’s a simple idea, that brings a smile to many, and entertains adults and children alike. The concept is simple. You find a rock, paint it, write on the back “Post a Photo to Moses Lake Rocks Facebook page,” seal the rock with a sealer, and when it’s dry… you hide it. Someone finds it, and posts a photo, and then hide it again, or keep it. Simple as that!

Continued from page 36 Whidbey Island Rocks. No smell ( well very slight) and dries quick. Needs 2 coats just like rustoleum spray. It's a brush on so you can use it right where you paint. Found this at Joann's Fabric, was a bit more then spray $6.99, but with 40% off coupon was $4 something. It may be what I use for the winter. Seems to be working well, ran water over it and no tackiness!! Woo Hoo!!! If you are not sure if it is sealed, try washing it in the sink and see how it holds up. That is how we tested the durability of the colored pencils. Make sure you write share a photo to the Facebook group Moses Lake Rocks on the back. You can also write Keep or re-hide, or a special message if there is room. Writing on
the back of the rock lets others know its purpose and gives you an opportunity to see your art again. Don’t Get Discouraged!!!- Your beautiful creations are a gift and a blessing to whoever finds them. Don’t get discouraged if your really awesome beloved work of art is never shared but you know has been found. I think only 1 out of 10 of our own rocks are shared to the Facebook page. Just remember how special it is to unexpectedly find a work of art or message on a rock and the joy that it brought. You can be certain that your art has been a joyful blessing to the finder even if they didn’t share to say so. Just have fun and keep creating and sharing your beautiful creations with us. Moses Lake Rocks ROCKS because of you.

Noises Off As well as being the director, Nick Mahaney, a wellness coach at Synergy Energy in Moses Lake, took on the monumental task of designing a set that is sturdy enough to permit the frolicking antics of the actors, but mobile enough to be turned completely around. This allows the audience to view the equally-frolicking back-stage antics that go on during the production of Nothing On, the play within the play. Having acted in five previous Masquers Productions, Nick is no stranger to the stage, but a production of this complexity can prove challenging. He confronts that challenge with professionalism and skill, and without losing his composure or amiable disposition. The always funny Justin Rowland plays Lloyd Dallas, the director of Nothing On. Cheri Barbre, lives up to her “Queen of Comedy” title as Dotty Otley (who plays Mrs. Clackett). Jeffrey Ames shows off his tremendous talents as the handsome young Garry Lejeune. Newcomers Emma Russell and Penny Sanford expertly play the vivacious Brooke Ashton and Poppy the nervous assistant stage manager. Bevan Olstad convincingly plays an aging, alcohol-craving actor in his role as a burglar. Jesse Huntwork is entertaining as the delicate Frederick Fellows. Jamie Cordell, an up and coming young actress, returns to play the beautiful Belinda Blair, while Rosalee Chamberlain expertly fills the role of Kim, a sleep-deprived, overworked stage manager. Show times for this not-to-be missed comedy are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2:00 February 17 through March 5. Art of the Undertaker: The Kayser Collection By Shawn Cardwell
T
he business of life can be beautiful, and so, too, can the business of death. Join the Moses Lake Museum March 24 to celebrate 'Art of the Undertaker: The Kayser Collection.' Jerry Kayser attended the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in the mid 1970s earning a degree in Mortuary Science. He completed his education at San Francisco State University while working at H.F. Suhr Company funeral home in the Mission District. He along with his wife, Ronda, moved to Moses Lake in 1986 when they purchased the 37-year-old Chapel of Memories funeral home, renamed Kayser's Chapel & Crematory.
The Kaysers' profession has influenced their past times and passions. "My first interest was the old vehicles," Jerry Kayser said," then you'd see accessories like a complete tool kit or sales catalogue from that period and the collection just took off from there." The Kayser Collection is one of a handful of similar collections around the country and contains items more rare and better quality then many. "There's probably a dozen fairly serious eclectic collectors of funeral related equipment and memorabilia like this, and most are fellow funeral directors. Three or four are definitely more serious than I am, but we do have some extremely rare items most funeral directors have never seen, he added.

Moses Lake Museum & Art Center Opening reception is 5-8pm, March 24
The collection of undertaker tools, instruments, and burial items date from the Civil War era through WWII. It includes embalming fluid containers, embalming kits, cooling boards, coffins sized for infants to adults and vintage trade publications. The exhibit will be rounded out with the Kayser's award-winning restored 1926 Studebaker hearse and 1939 Carved Side Cadillac hearse, along with their 1900's era horse-drawn hearse. To cap it off will be a display of Jerry Kayser's own stunning photography and their personal 1933 Packard Eight Club Sedan. Too creepy? Not creepy enough? To "flesh out" the exhibits, Jerry Kayser said, "I've picked up several
additional pieces of absolutely exquisite mourning hair jewelry and artwork from the late 1800's Victorian era. It's actually hair from the deceased that is woven and braided into broaches, earrings, necklaces, rings and watch fobs... If anything will be morbid for some people, that will be," he said. "Come down and absorb the enormity of what it represents," said the collector. "The Museum does not even have enough room to display everything we have." Opening reception is 5 to 8 pm, March 24 and will include appetizers, a no-host wine bar catered by Camas Cove Winery and Faux Backyard Taxidermy for the free Adult Swim craft activity.

Far Fetched By Melea Johnson
I
can get ready in 5-minutes. When it comes to a new adventure, taking time to apply makeup is of no concern no matter how many times I've been told the importance of a good primer. With a born sense of wander, the wonder of travel has been a large part of my life in my search of interesting. Somewhere is always calling. My passport is never far from reach. I have no problem being hurled through the atmosphere at 500 miles per hour to get to where I determine to go. Recent travel ideas for the upcoming (dare I say) sunny season has been crossing my mind in droves, followed by the unstoppable daydreams of places I want to experience, each being as transforming and irresistible as the next. Yes, I want to go everywhere. I realized the extent of my great wanderlust when a friend and I, lost somewhere in Western Washington, resorted in the use of mapquest to locate a particular store. Not knowing the address, I simply entered the name: Far Fetched.
To our surprise, my IPhone application skipped right over the Seattle store and directed us to head east on 19th SW, merge onto Interstate 5 Southbound – 11.4mi, take exit 169 toward NE 45th – 0.6mi, slight right at N Pacific St – 1.6mi, then ...kayak across the Pacific Ocean entering Hawaii, and turn right at Turtle Bay. Direction number 10 through 35 took us through Japan, another kayak trip to Northern Australia and ending in Western Australia (on Wannaroo Road), where the Far Fetched store is open late on Thursday evenings for our convenient shopping pleasure. The trip a mere 13,425 miles, 54 days, 11 hours from our current location. Sounded amazing! My friend and I discussed it briefly but agreed neither of us had the 54 days, 11 hours off work, at the moment, so moved onto plan B, somewhat closer to home. For now.

A lunch for Someone else by Michaelle Boetger
I
recently read an article on SpokaneCares.org, that states, “Research has proven that if you want to be happy, forget yourself and serve others. People who volunteer and give become happier as a result, because the key to happiness is to labor for the happiness of others. That acquired happiness then lowers the level of stress hormones in our brain and contributes to a longer, healthier life. Those who feel happy are also more productive, effective and successful; therefore, happiness becomes the secret to success and prosperity. Our brains are actually wired to serve others. When we give charitable money and service to others, our brain releases several stress hormones which elevate our mood and cause us to feel happy. Serving and giving help to others makes us happier, healthier, more prosperous, and therefore greatly blessed and more successful than non-givers.” I love helping people. I’ve donated graphic design work for the Serve Moses Lake in the past and follow them on Facebook. I kept seeing them post about needing supplies for sack lunches that they give out to those in need. I even saw a request for people to make the sack lunches. I contacted Serve Moses Lake to learn more. I found out that Serve Moses Lake has been giving out lunches to those in need for years and typically gets requests from 25-30 people a day, Monday through Thursday that they’re open. This really surprised me, I guess I had no idea there were that many people in need in our community. I think sometimes we forget or don’t “see” those in need, we can get so focused on ourselves that we don’t realize that others are struggling. Or too often we think there’s just nothing we as individuals can do to make a difference. I love organizing and planning things, doing research, figuring out how to make things happen and thought this was a project I could take on that would really have an impact on those in need. I knew this would be more than just making sandwiches and putting lunches together, I
needed a team to help make it happen. I asked two friends who also love giving back to the community, Alicia Choate and Shannon Hintz. Neither said no, but graciously offered to not only make lunches every week but to help promote this program and solicit donations to keep it going. After a month of planning and fund raising we were ready to get started. We asked everyone we knew if they’d be interested in making a donation and we were not surprised at those that stepped up to be a part of this community giving. With a facebook page, .Facebook.com/CareSack, we started promoting. We create weekly Facebook events for people to volunteer their time and have had great response. Every Tuesday evening we make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and include a fruit or applesauce, a sweet snack (cookies) and a salty snack (chips, crackers) in a paper sack. On a weekly basis we’ve been making 50-60 lunches and deliver them to Serve Moses Lake to distribute to those in need. It only takes about 6 people to make the lunches and we can do it all in 45 minutes. It’s not much time at all and afterwards we all feel so good that something so simple would help so many people. In order to keep this program going we need to continue the community’s support, we need financial donations that allow us to purchase food items, each sack lunch costs about $1.25 so every dollar makes a huge difference. Can you ask your employer to make a donation? Perhaps you, your family or co-workers would volunteer 45 minutes of your time to make lunches on a Tuesday evening at 5:30pm. Lunches are made at Youth Dynamics at 106 E. Third Avenue downtown, across from Washington Federal Bank. If you’re interested in volunteering please go ‘like’ our Facebook page and sign-up under the ‘Events’ tab. This will give us an idea of how many people to expect, only a handful are actually needed each week. I know that when people come together with a common goal we can all make a difference. Even the smallest amount of time and money can make a huge impact to making a difference in someone’s life.
