Rodeo Events Bareback Riding Bareback riding pits horse against rider and is one of the most physically demanding of all the rodeo events. A cowboy attempts to ride a bucking horse by holding onto a “rigging” - a leather and rawhide strap-with no stirrups or seat, for eight seconds. The cowboy must “mark the horse out” when it exits the chute, meaning his feet have to be above the point of the horse’s shoulder throughout the whole first jump. There are 50 possible points awarded for the horse’s bucking ability, and 50 for the cowboy’s riding style.

Steer Wrestling Steer wrestling a steer requires more than brute strength. The steer wrestler or “bulldogger,” starts behind a barrier, and begins his chase after the steer has been given a head start. The steer wrestler is assisted by a hazer, another cowboy on horseback tasked with keeping the steer running in a straight line. After the catch, the steer wrestler must either bring the steer to a stop or change the direction of the animal’s body before the throw or is disqualified. The clock stops when the steer is on his side with all four legs pointing the same direction.

Saddle Bronc Known as rodeo’s classic event, saddle bronc riding is judged similarly to bareback riding but there are additional possibilities to being disqualified: losing a stirrup or dropping the thickly braided rein that is attached to the horse’s halter. Photo by Rosanna Sales

thevenuemag.com | 13

Tie Down Roping Tie down roping is an authentic ranch skill that originated from working cowboys. Once the calf has been roped, the cowboy dismounts and runs down the length of the rope to the calf. Once he reaches the calf, the cowboy ties three legs together with a six-foot pigging string. The calf must remain tied for 6 seconds or the cowboy is disqualified.

Team Roping In team roping, two ropers, a “header” and a “heeler,” work together to catch a steer in the fastest time possible. The header throws his rope first and must catch the steer with one of three legal catches - around the horns, around the neck, or around a half head. The header will then dally his rope around his saddle horn and turn the steer to the left. The heeler then ropes both hind legs for a clean run, or one leg for a 5-second penalty.

Barrel Racing Barrel Racing is a fast paced, exciting timed event where horse and rider cross a starting line, race around a cloverleaf pattern and run back across the finish line. Times are recorded in the 100th of a second.

Bull Riding Bull Riding is one of the most exciting events. Like the other rough stock events, the cowboy must last until the 8 second buzzer goes off. Bull riders use a “bull rope,” a braided rope approximately eight feet long, that is fitted around the bull’s midsection to hold on to. The rider inserts his hand into the rope and the rope is then pulled tight. When the ride is completed, the contestant pulls on the free end of the rope, thus releasing his hand and he jumps away from the bull.

Tough Enough to Wear

Pink The Columbia Basin Rodeo Association is proud to partner up with the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation.

T

hursday night’s rodeo is dedicated to “Tough Enough to Wear Pink”, a program about increasing awareness of breast cancer. Most PRCA rodeos including the National Finals in Las Vegas dedicate one night to this cause. We’re not Just “cowboys in pink shirts”. The Columbia Basin Rodeo Association committee is taking this program a step further to include a presentation to honor lost loved ones and celebrate those who have won their battle, and to raise money for the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation. The release of 200 pink balloons is a tradition and a powerful memorial that brings out emotion in even the toughest cowboys. We have chosen to support the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation in our community to help local cancer patients with financial burdens, counseling, support groups, medical advice and many other services. The Moses Lake Round-up rodeo will continue to support Thursday night’s “Tough Enough to were Pink”. We would like to thank the Columbia Basin community for coming to our rodeo and supporting this important cause. You can learn more about the history of “Tough Enough to were Pink”, at: http//toughenoughtowearpink.com. See ya next year! Mike Harris, Chairman, Tough enough to wear Pink Moses Lake Roundup

“The value of community programs cannot be overstated”

cross the nation the purple ribbon has been adopted to remember and honor those who have lost their lives at the hands of someone they once loved. The display of purple shows support for victims and advocates and conveys a powerful message that there is no place for domestic violence in a community. Man Up is a non-profit organization designed to raise awareness of domestic violence and generate funds in local communities for victims and families who have been affected by these issues. Domestic Violence is an epidemic in our society and is a public health and safety issue. The campaign title is the Man Up Crusade™ and is represented by the color purple and the purple ribbon. The Moses Lake Roundup along with KDRM/KBSN Radio is sponsoring the Man Up Crusade on Saturday night of the rodeo, August 22, 2015. The value of community programs cannot be overstated. These programs provide a vitally important resource through hard work and dedication of all those involved. Look forward to fund raisers and awareness programs throughout the year. Rabbit Wilde

Wednesday, August 17th at 7:15 pm & at 9:00pm, Center Field Stage

Though all four members of Rabbit Wilde grew up running around wooded areas of the same small town in the farthest Northwest corner of Washington state, brothers Zach and Nathan didn’t meet Miranda, the third founding member, until they had all ended up in New York City. This kind of backyard folk seasoned by the edge, polish and fervor of big-city inclinations is at the root of their high-energy sound and stage presence. The group revamps classic string band instrumentation with homespun percussion and the unique integration of six-string ukulele and Jillian Walker on cello.

How many SPACEBURGERS will your family enjoy this year?

Lioness Club of Moses Lake donates to the needs of our local community, funded by the club's efforts to serve up the famous SPACEBURGER at the Grant County Fair. We know you will find their booth and enjoy. by Michaelle Boetger

T

he Lioness Club of Moses Lake recently recognized five of its members for 25+ years of service to the club and our community. The Lioness Club of Moses Lake has been a part of the community for more than 50 years and has given back more than $1,000,000 to various groups. Everything from non-profits to service organization to sports teams have benefited from money raised in the Space Burger booth at the Grant County Fair. Lioness Judy Thompson said, “I joined the Moses Lake Lioness Club in 1989 and served on the Board and have been Secretary numerous times as well being President twice. I have also served as the District President and Secretary. I enjoyed working the night shifts in the

Spaceburger Booth for the past 25 years and have especially enjoyed knowing and working with the other members of the club.” Lioness Mary Mayo said, “I have been a member for 30 years and worked in the Spaceburger booth at the fair for 5 years before joining Lioness. It is the best way I know to give back to the community and at the same time make friends, some of them lifelong friends. I have been Vice President and President twice, of Moses Lake Lioness and our District President. This year will be my first as a club Director.” Lioness Bev Love said, “ I joined Lioness on October 20, 1986 after volunteering in the booth for a few years to earn

Fair Food Vendors money to support the Little League and Babe Ruth that our sons were involved in. After seeing how much fun and good they did in giving back to the community I thought it would be a fun group to belong to and have also met some really good friends. We work hard and have given over a million dollars back to our community. So if you are looking for a good service organization to belong to come out on the third Monday night to the Boys and Girls Club and see what we are all about.” Lioness Sandy Melbye said, “Making Space Burgers, making sauce, selling Spaceburgers, giving back to the community. Making memories and friendships here and in Canada! 24 hours of relay for life, shopping retreats, rafting trips, swim parties, plays, bunko, Christmas parties, highway clean-up, scholarships. This is what I think when someone says what does Lioness mean to you.” The purpose of the Lioness Club of Moses Lake is to foster a spirit of interest, friendliness and helpfulness among its members and to cooperate with the Moses Lake Lions Club in their philanthropic projects. The Lioness Club of Moses Lake is a non-profit organization with ongoing projects such as scholarships and numerous other donations given to the local community, all funded by the club’s efforts at the Space Burger Booth at the Grant County Fair. Many individuals, groups & community projects have benefited from the efforts of the Lioness Club of Moses Lake. To help support the community consider joining the Lioness Club of Moses Lake, membership is open to women age 18 and over. Fast Track Kids Tractor Pull Daily 10:45am, 1:15pm, 3:00pm, 4:30pm Centerfield

I

t’s not every day a kid gets a chance to become a star of the show, unless of course he or she is at the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull Competitions. Kids from four to twelve are welcome to be in the show for free and compete in a fast paced, action packed, pedal tractor pull. Each tractor has been modified for heavy pulling and is attached to a weight transfer sled. The sled is filled with a certain amount of weight which is determined by the age of each participant. The four year olds start with 25 pounds and the twelve year olds start with 250 pounds. As kids pedal down the path, the weight in the bucket transfers up the sled and makes it harder to pedal. Some kids do exceptionally well and are able to pedal the tractor all the way down the 25 foot path. Those kids go to the final round at the end of each show. Regardless of the outcome, every child is encouraged to do their best and is praised for their accomplishments. It is the mission of the Show Director during the pedal tractor pull to positively uplift each child, help create a healthy self-esteem, and leave each child with a giant smile on his or her face! Fast Track Entertainment, Inc. has been performing kids’ shows at fairs and festivals since 1994. The Kids Pedal Tractor Pull Competition is always “tops” for audience participation, education, and down home fun! The owner states, “The kids make our show special, it’s all about them. The performance is a celebration of kids’ accomplishments. It’s a natural fit at the fairs!”

West Coast Lumberjacks

Daily 11:30am, 3:00pm, 6:00pm Southfield

E

stablished in 1982, we’ve been entertaining roaring crowds ever since. It used to be that logging shows were limited to the confines of small logging communities, where men would compete after the work was done to see who was the fastest sawer, quickest climber, and most steady on the logs. The lumberjacks showed off their skills, knowing that the best logger could earn more money when work started again. Today, the dangers of the industry are still very real and crowds flock to see the recreation of these thrilling competitions all over the world. No longer are they limited to small times gatherings, with lumberjack shows seeing huge international success and sponsorships.

While working at a local manufacturing facility, he came up with the idea of a taxi and delivery service using Hybrid cars, focused on connecting consumers with local restaurants for a home delivery of take out dining orders. Beginning with one Toyota Prius in June 2012, Nathan and his wife Stacie have grown the business into a fleet of Prius vehicles, including a shuttle service to accommodate larger transportation needs.

While raising two young sons, Pack’s hard work and commitment to the community have laid the foundation to his candidacy’s platform of delivering commitment and communication. When elected, Pack will focus his efforts as Grant County Commissioner on improving customer service and transparency in county government, having more efficient utilization of county resources, and enhancing the effectiveness of county government, which will help to improve economic growth in Grant County and provide for a safe and stable community. “As a person who started and runs a successful business which create jobs in Grant County, I want to apply my business and management experience to improve how Grant County government serves the people of the county,” stated Pack.
