PPGH WORKSHOP SERIES PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Editor Theresa Campbell

As I write my final President’s letter for the ViewFinder, I am remembering so many things I have experienced with PPGH: Attending the first meeting after I joined PPGH, my first class I taught for the guild while working toward my Craftsman degree, the email congratulating me on earning my CPP and walking across the stage this past January to receive my Photographic Craftsman at Imaging. All of these experiences are just a few of the wonderful things that happened to me as a PPGH Kevin Falcon, Cr. Photog., member. And last, but not least, it has been an honor CPP and privilege to serve as your President for 2018. Many of you helped me along the way to get achieve my goals. Thank you! Last month, Curley Marshall, Cr.Photog., CPP and PPGH Past President, presented a new program “The Art of Portrait Lighting.” We had models, lights and learning! A discussion on creating dramatic portraits in the studio, light control using shadows / highlights in and out of the studio as well as light placement, the direction and quality of light. Great interaction and discussion with the audience left people wanting more. This month, Kellie Gann Randolph, Cr.Photog., CPP, co-founder of the East Texas Guild of Professional Photographers, presented “Heirloom Family Portraits.” It was a very exciting presentation covering pre-session planning, pricing, posing, clothing suggestions, composition and lighting. She had many handouts to share with everyone and was transparent sharing with us what worked as well as what didn’t work in her business. Great information! Although the year is ending, we have been hard at work to planning a new year of monthly programs and workshops. We should have a list of speakers and programs on the website very soon. Learning is a constant and we are always looking for new programs to bring to you, our members. Next up is our annual holiday party and registration is open. We have found a location that is closer to the center of Houston so everyone, get your party shoes on! Come out and celebrate another great year of learning, networking and community with your fellow members. We will be recognizing our members who participate in the Fellowship program. You did turn in your points? And of course, we are also recognizing our image competition participants for their achievements from this year’s monthly image competition. Come join us for some dinner, drinks and celebrate another great year with the guild. I hope to see you there! I want to wish all of you a very happy and safe holiday season! All the best to you and a great success in 2019 with your business and personal life. ~Kevin Falcon, Cr.Photog., CPP

F) Stop Recording G) Setting Stroke & Mat Colors Before running your mat action, you will want to set your foreground to the color you would like to use for your stroke line and set your background to the color you would like to use for your mat. I generally like my matting to be almost an extension of my background. I do not want the mat (or the stroke) to dominate over my subject matter. I will typically select a color near the edge of my background for the mat color and then find a color for the stroke like that provides some contrast from the mat color, but is not radically different. Now run your action. Once you have run your action, if you find that your color combination for stoke and mat is not pleasing. For me, in this case, I do not care for the bold blue and the green stroke, so I am going to try it again. To easily back up and start over:

J) Repeat the Process of Running the Mat Action Find another combination of stroke color and mat color, then run the mat action. Repeat the process of running the mat action and clearing it using the History palette until you find the most pleasing stroke/mat color combination. I hope that you find this useful! Have fun creating digital mats! THE VIEWFINDER NOV 2018 5 Fonts: Aparajita and Mistral

BLAIR HAYNIE HIGH KEY LIGHTING by Kathy Kinser, CPP Blair Haynie presented a very informative high key program program that started with a presentation of images and a discussion of these photographs. Then he set up an example of a four-light high key set up with white paper as the background and white Masonite as the flooring. The next step was showing the participants how to use a light meter to make sure the lights were set up properly. The attendees had been asked to bring a white shirt so they could be photographed in sitting, standing and floor poses. This was a fun activity and a good learning experience. It really does help a photographer to put themselves in the subject’s place. Then Blair showed how to create a portable studio experience to take on site. After more practice by the participants, Blair showed how to adjust the color of the white background with lighting. Last but not least Blair discussed broad and short lighting and light ratios as applied to the CPP process. Questions were encouraged in a fun learning atmosphere.

CPP Corner Re-certification:

A new year brings in new updates to how you can accumulate your CPP Re-Certification Continuing Education Units (CEUs)! With the ever evolving ways to consume education from face-to-face to online education, the online component has always been the most sought out as it resolves scheduling, financial and traveling issues. The addition of the online continuing education component using PPA webinars, PPAedu and PhotoVision content will continue your pursuit in offering value to your education and to your clients from the comfort of your home. As of January 1, 2018 CPPs may submit a maximum of FIVE (5) CEUs from the 15 CEUs required to recertify from online education. This online education can come from PPA webinars, PPAedu or PhotoVision videos and will count for 0.25 CEUs per hour of video watched (any combination of videos that will equate to 60 minutes of video will equal to 0.25 CEUs). Please provide “Title – Date Watched – Instructor/Presenter - Platform and Length” when entering information on the CPP Re-Certification Form. Currently only PPA webinars, PPAedu and PhotoVision videos are accepted for the online education component but please review the Recertification CEU Chart for other ways to accumulate CEUs! Remember any online continuing education accumulated must fall within your Recertification cycle in order for CEUs to be valid and counted. So log on to your PPA account and start watching any of the PPAedu and PhotoVision videos and start accumulating! Not sure when you are due to Recertify?
