A gate and fewer larger lots are proposed for The Crossings in GV BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

A preliminary application to re-plat the 31.9 acres comprising The Crossings subdivision in GV, which is zoned R-2.5 (two and one-half acres or more each), has been submitted for review to the City of Greenwood Village. It seeks to reduce the number of lots on the property from 11 to six. The development is on South Jackson Place just west of Colorado Boulevard and south of

Belleview. The request, submitted by Jim Fitzmorris as vice-president of JR Engineering of Centennial, seeks to “re-plat the existing subdivision,” including “vacation of a majority of S. Jackson Place.” It also seeks to have the street, South Jackson Place, including the at-grade bridge over the High Line Canal, transferred to the ownership of the Harrison Oaks Metropolitan District. The bridge over the HLC and the roadway are presently public property owned by the City of Greenwood

This is the current layout of the development. The proposed re-plat would consolidate the five lots on the north side of the High Line Canal to three and the six on the south side into three. The neighborhood would also be gated.

Village. The new plan also intends that the southerly portion of the road “be vacated and made part of the adjacent lots.” The proposed new site layout contains a total of six lots, three on the north side of the High Line Canal (HLC) and three on the south. The sizes of the lots on the north side would be 6.16 acres, 5.62 acres and

3.83 acres. The drawing also shows a proposed new turn around on the north side just off Belleview and a new gate (there is no gate presently) just beyond the turnaround. The sizes of the three lots on the south side of the HLC would be 7.08 acres, 5.14 acres and 3.2 acres. According to the drawing, Jackson Place would end just

south of the bridge over the HLC trail, thus access to the three new large lots would likely be via long driveways beginning at that point. The proposal is presently being reviewed by GV community development staff. Any re-platting will require the approval of the GV City Council. fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

Lockheed Martin expansion and recent Lucy launch highlight Denver South as hub for aerospace and aviation industries Nearly 200 aerospace and aviation companies are located in Denver South, with more expected to locate in the region in the coming years Denver South, located along the I-25 corridor south of Denver and the economic development organization for the region, has recently welcomed the expansion of Lockheed Martin into approximately 650,000 square feet of office space (nearly half that amount in the past year alone). Denver South also recently joined Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance (another major aerospace company headquartered in Denver South) and the Colorado Space Coalition (a Denver South partner) to celebrate the Lucy rocket launch, the first mission to the Trojan Asteroids (https://www. nasa.gov/mission_pages/lucy/ overview/index). In addition to the recent leasing activity and rocket launch, Denver South is home to nearly 200 aviation and aerospace companies, including Sierra Nevada Corporation, Lockheed Martin, UP Aerospace Inc., Jeppesen: A Boeing Company, Oakman Aerospace, BYE Aerospace, and General Atomics, among others. It has become a hub for “flight”. “The number of Aviation and Aerospace companies in

Denver South has increased every year over the last 10 years, nearly doubling since 2011, with a highly educated workforce and significant assets in and around the region supporting both industries,” said Christine Shapard, Vice President of Economic Development, Denver South.. “As private companies continue to develop new space technologies and the U.S. military is increasingly focused on space, companies in the Denver South region continue to hire and grow here to advance critical national security and defense missions across the U.S.” The Denver South region represents 14 percent of all Aviation and Aerospace employment in the nine-county Metro Denver and Northern Colorado region and 16 percent of all Aviation and Aerospace companies in the nine-county region are located in Denver South. The Denver South region is home to nearly 19 percent of the nine-county region’s Aerospace subcluster’s total employment. The nine-county region ranked first in the nation for its high concentration of private aerospace jobs and ranked first out of the 50 largest metro areas in total private-sector employment. The Aerospace subcluster had a record year in 2020, with blockbuster employment

growth of 7.4 percent overthe-year.

Industry Snapshot for Denver South (U.S. data in parenthesis) • Companies: 190 • Average Wage: $122,500 • Direct Employment: 6,810 • Direct Employment Concentration (2020): 1.9% (0.9%) • 5-Year Employment Growth (2015-2020): 9.6% (4.6%) • 1-Year Employment Growth (2020): 4.5% (-6.5%) “Denver South’s robust educational system and access to major research centers help prepare the future Aviation and Aerospace workforce with vital skills and nearly 6,810 workers in the Denver South region support the Aviation and Aerospace cluster, with a large number of rocket scientists, pilots, engineers, and other high-tech, highly skilled workers,” said Tom Brook, President and CEO, Denver South. “The nine county region’s universities are among the nation’s top producers of hightech jobs and STEM graduates, including many specializing in Aviation and Aerospace. All of these attributes, combined with the region’s tremendous quality-of-life, continue to make Denver South a great location for industry growth and prosperity.”

Helicopter, snowplow, & stealth fighter parents Helicopter parent. It’s a loaded term with a cynical pejorative connotation, especially in the world of educators. People often look with contempt at parents who quite literally seem to care too much. And, in the era of overzealous mothers contacting college professors about grades or even employers about interviews and promotions, it’s easy to criticize and ridicule such behavior. However, after nearly thirty years in education, I have a slightly qualified view of over-active parenting. As an educator, I have always said I’d much rather deal with a helicopter parent who hovers too much than an absentee parent who just doesn’t seem to care. I’ve seen both kinds of parenting, and the risks of disengaged, careless, or even resentful parenting are just too damaging. For, as esteemed author Elie Wiesel so wisely reminded us, “The opposite of love is not hate. It’s indifference.” Now it appears there is a bit of validation for helicopter parenting. According to researcher and writer Pamela Druckerman “the bad news about helicopter parenting” is “it works.” With that news, I would imagine most critics immediately key in on the word “works.” How exactly does it work, and at what cost to the child? According to numerous studies, the most effective parents are, in fact, authoritative. However, that authoritative approach doesn’t simply mean demanding obedience. It actually focuses on developing qualities such as adaptability, problem-solving, self-efficacy, and independence. Parenting is about methodically leading children to adulthood, nurturing their growth and independence. However, a new parenting term has recently hit the lexicon -- snowplow parents. Snowplow parents are people who do everything they can to “clear the road” of any obstacles for their children. This approach is complicated because everyone wants what is best for their kids, and no one wants to see his child struggle unnecessarily. At the same time, reasonable people understand that struggle and adversity are part of growing up, and often “what we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly,” as noted by Thomas Paine. When children are young, it is right to protect them from the harsh realities of the world -- even if we inadvertently introduce them to death, destruction, and betrayal at an early age by showing them video games and Disney movies. Beyond that minor indiscretion, parents simply want childhood to be relatively pleasant. Once kids reach adolescence, and the rules of competition and comparison come into play, we must begin to evaluate those sink-or-swim moments, as our kids learn to take care of themselves. Snowplow parents won’t allow the sink-

ing, mistakenly believing that smoothing the road for the kid is more important than teaching the driving skills and coping strategies to prepare kids to ride solo. There are varying levels of snowplow behavior, with the Lori Loughlin-Felicity Huffman version being the most insane. That “Varsity Blues” college admissions scandal will perhaps provide a moment of reflection for parents, kids, and college admissions officers to reevaluate the often Faustian system we have created. Of course, I’ve never advocated for helicopter parenting,

even as I seek to understand it. The term seemed to arise from the Baby Boomer parenting style which sought to protect their Millennial kids from taking the risks and making the mistakes of their parents. I much prefer the structured and supportive but more free-range parenting style associated with Gen Xers who want their children to have the freedom and develop the resilience they did as children in the 70s and 80s. At the heart is the idea of loving them, but not obsessing over them. It’s caring for them by teaching them and expecting them to care for themselves and others. It’s also about trusting them to be the human beings we raised, even if that means knowing they will make mistakes and occasionally disappoint us and themselves. That’s when they need love and support the most. Effective parents don’t hover, they don’t helicopter, and they certainly don’t snowplow. How-

ever, they are neither aloof nor disengaged. Generational writer and sociologist Neil Howe has termed Gen X parents “Stealth Fighter Parents.” They are aware and involved in the lives of their children, choosing where, when, and how much. If an issue “seems below their threshold of importance,” they will let it go, “saving their energy” and probably their nerves. But if the situation “shows up on their radar … they will strike, rapidly and in force, and often without warning.” The target might be peers or other adults, but most likely it’s the kids themselves. Ultimately, it’s simply about being involved and caring while gradually letting them learn to fly. Michael P. Mazenko is a writer, educator, & school administrator in Greenwood Village. He blogs at A Teacher’s View and can be found on Twitter @mmazenko. You can email him at mmazenko @gmail.com

Colorado newspapers are in demand There is a resurgence ongoing with the nation’s newspapers and here in Colorado. Alden Global Capital, owners of The Denver Post, this past year were able to purchase Tribune Publishing, one of the largest newspaper chains in America that includes The Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, New York Daily News and Boston Herald. Chairman of Alden Global Capital is Heath Freeman who lives in New York City and spends time at his home in Florida. The Denver Post is now part of this massive group of substantial and influential newspapers. Here in Colorado The Denver Post owns a bevy of daily and weekly newspaper that include Boulder, Longmont, Loveland, Sterling, and Greeley daily newspapers and a bevy of weekly newspapers scattered across Eastern Colorado. They somehow missed purchasing The Pueblo Chieftain that ended up in Gatehouse Newspapers stable of over 600 newspapers across the United States.

Denver based Phil Anschutz owns The Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph along with the Broadmoor Hotel. He has done a stellar job with both the hotel and the newspaper. He also has a newspaper empire and started The Denver Gazette as a digital only newspaper several years ago launched from his Colorado Springs Gazette operation. The online newspaper competes with the Colorado Sun, also a digital newspaper, started by former Denver Post former staff members and other talented writers. Here’s where the fun begins in Colorado with this past summer with The Colorado Sun purchasing the Healey family-owned Colorado Community Media. The assortment of 25 weekly newspapers were part of the Sentinel chain of 13 newspapers that once circled the Denver Metro area. The papers were eventually assembled by Jerry Healey over past decades that includes The Littleton Independent, Englewood Herald,

all of Douglas County, Jeffco and Adam’s county major newspapers. All of these newspapers are now under the Colorado Sun flag and at last report are being printed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, no longer being printed at The Denver Post plant in Berthoud, Co. where The Villager has been printed for many years. Healey had 25 newspapers in Colorado Community Media. The Denver Post, through their subsidiary, Prairie Mountain Publishing, has about 18 and the latest bomb shell hit last week with Swift Communication selling all of their Colorado newspapers to Ogden Newspapers with home offices in West Virginia. Swift has dominated the Colorado ski mountain towns owning the very successful Vail Trail and Aspen Times, along with Steamboat Springs Pilot and many other Western Slope towns, including my old newspaper, The Craig Daily Press. If you start adding up the numbers, there are about 120 major newspapers operating in Colorado’s 65 counties

with active newspapers in almost every Colorado town. Almost half of these newspaper have been recently purchased, largely by outside money from major newspaper corporations or foundations providing funding for a newspaper group such as The Colorado Sun. There are now three newspaper groups functioning in Arapahoe County, The Villager, The Colorado Sun group, and The Sentinel in Aurora. The Villager is on the move and recently purchased the Gilpin County Weekly Register-Call, the oldest weekly newspaper in the state started in 1862. The site of “The Richest Square Mile on Earth” where gold was first discovered in Gregory Gulch. Home to the Central City Opera and the famed Teller House, and the billion-dollar casino industry. Seems like everyone wants to live and play in Colorado, and why not? Ink is still flowing by the barrels here in booming Colorado.

Breakthrough at Kent Denver, Inspiring today’s students & tomorrow’s teachers in our backyard! SUBMITTED BY KENT DENVER

The mission of Breakthrough at Kent Denver is two-fold: first, to increase the educational and social opportunities of motivated, financially under-resourced, middle and high school students through a quality year-round program, and second, to motivate and train talented college students for careers in education. Breakthrough at Kent Denver is part of a national collaborative of Breakthrough’s trying to solve two key pieces of the education crisis: unequal access to quality education for low-income students and a shortage of quality teachers. There is ONLY ONE Breakthrough chapter in Colorado, and it is right in the backyard of Greenwood Village residents on the Kent Denver Campus! The Breakthrough model has two key components which work in tandem to create vibrant communities of lifelong learners across the nation and inspire the next generation of educators: 1) Identifying under-resourced students with demonstrated motivation in sixth grade and engaging them with rigorous academic support, mentoring, and college counseling through summer and school-year programming from middle school through college matriculation, free of charge to their families; and 2) Providing a highly diverse, intentionally recruited pool of talented undergraduates with the opportunity to gain more than 100 hours of firsthand classroom teaching experience through a 9-week pre-service Teaching Fellow residency, supported by Instructional Coaches throughout the course of the summer. Breakthrough is trying to close the opportunity gap for low-income students and address the national teacher shortage. Breakthrough’s mission is to create rigorous, vibrant learning communities across the nation, where highly motivated, traditionally underrep-

Even though it can be scary, getting out of your comfort zone is something you have to do in order to grow.”

Cherry Creek Football Bruins complete the three-peat BY FREDA MIKLIN STAFF WRITER

When the 2021 5A state championship football game ended on December 4, the score was exactly the same as it was a year earlier in the 2020 5A state championship, Cherry Creek Bruins 21, Valor Christian Eagles zero. The 2020 game was played in Pueblo. The 2021 game was played at Empower Field at Mile High. It was Creek’s third consecutive 5A state championship, having defeated Columbine High School 35–10 in 2019. The Eagles came into the game as the number one seed with a perfect record. Creek was number two, having lost two games during the season, including one to Arapahoe High School. Valor possessed the ball first, starting on their 19 yard-line. Running back Gavin Sawchuck, who will play for Oklahoma in the fall and holds the rushing record at Valor (with more yards than Christian McCaffrey), gained 16 yards on the first two plays of the game before Creek’s defense slowed Valor down. After Bruins defensive end junior Blake Purchase tipped QB Colton Allen’s pass, Valor had to punt. On their first possession from scrimmage, Creek’s Arion Boyd ran the ball for a first down, followed by a six-yard pass from Creek QB Christian Hammond to wide receiver Ky Oday. On a third and four, Hammond handed off to Carlson “Bubba” Tann for another first down on Creek’s 45-yard line. With no one open for a pass, Hammond ran the ball four yards himself. After a penalty, it was Creek’s turn to punt. Following a touchback, Valor started the next series at their 20yard line but didn’t get far. After another Valor punt, Creek started at their 45-yard line with just under five minutes left in the first quarter. On the first play, Hammond ran the ball ten yards. A pass play to junior wide receiver Cooper Pollard accounted for another first down. Then Hammond kept the ball and ran for a first down, this time to Valor’s 21-yard line. After Coach Logan called a time out, Hammond passed the ball to junior tight end Max Rodriguez, who ran it into the end zone for the first score of the game. After the PAT by Boden Page, it was 7-0 Creek with four minutes left in the first quarter. Another touchback put Valor on their 20-yard line to start the next series. As Eagles’ QB Allen began to pass, Creek left tackle George Fitzpatrick, an Ohio State commit who is 6’6”, swatted the ball down. Allen next tried a long pass that landed incomplete. Another attempted pass to wide receiver Grant Simmons, covered by Creek sophomore linebacker Angelo Petrides, fell to the ground and Valor punted again. Creek wide receiver Remington Larson fielded the ball and returned it to the Creek 45-yard line but a holding penalty moved it back to the 30. Creek tcouldn’t make any progress and with two minutes left in the first quarter, punted the ball 58 yards to the Valor 10-yard line. On Valor’s next series, Creek linebacker Henry Lamar dropped back in coverage and picked off

Allen on the 21-yard line, then ran the ball into the end zone for a pick-six. With just over one minute to go in the first quarter, it was Creek 14, Valor zero. With a third and nine and less than a minute left in the quarter, Allen completed a pass to sophomore Asher Weiner on Valor’s 32-yard line for a first down, but on the next play Creek linebacker Logan Brantley hit the ball out of Sawchuck’s hands and Ez Rice recovered it for the Bruins but they were unable to capitalize on the turnover. Valor started their first series of the second quarter at their 15-yard line. Allen ran it himself for five yards on the first play. It was third and four yards to go when Sawchuck broke free and ran to the 37-yard line. Then Allen hit wide receiver Colby Reynolds with a pass to the 43-yard-line with nine minutes left in the half. On the next play, Creek stopped Valor on a fourth and one play with the help of linebacker Blake Purchase.

Creek got the ball on Valor’s 47-yard-line after the turnover on downs. After a quick pass from Hammond to wide receiver Ismael Cisse and a short run by junior Arion Boyd, Creek got penalized twice, leading to a punt by Bowden Page that Creek downed at the Valor two-yard line. After almost being brought down in the end zone, Allen connected with Sawchuck for a short pass, then wide receiver Grant Simmons for a long one, and Valor had a first down at their 29-yard-line. After two run plays, Allen connected with Simmons on a pass that he ran to the 45-yardline for a first down. With under five minutes to play in the half, Allen made a perfect pass to a wide-open Simmons but Creek’s Logan Brantley came up and stopped Simmons cold at the 48yard line. After younger brother Gabe Sawchuck got Valor to a fourth and one, Creek’s Brantley tackled the younger Sawchuck for the second consecutive play

causing Valor turned over the ball on downs again with 3:53 left in the half. Creek QB Hammond completed passes to wide receivers Kyair Johnston and Ky Oday on the next series, bringing the Bruins to Valor’s 39-yard line. After slipping attempted tackles by three Valor defenders, Hammond broke free and passed the ball to Ismael Cisse avt the 20-yard-line, who ran it in for a score. After the PAT, the score was 21-0 with 2:41 left in the first half. While the Valor defense kept the Creek offense from scoring in the second half, the Valor offense couldn’t get anything done against the Creek defense. In the last minute of the game, with Valor threatening, Creek cornerback Sam Pezdirtz, as he had been all afternoon, was in the right place at the right time and swatted down a pass from Allen, this time in the end zone, denying Valor the chance to put points on the board. As the game ended, Valor was on Creek’s five-yard line but never scored. Valor had 72 plays from scrimmage compared to Creek’s 48 over the game and beat Creek in total net yards, 278 to 193 bt the

Creek defense made the difference with three interceptions, a forced fumble, and two turnovers on downs. The 2021 5A state championship was Creek Coach Dave Logan’s tenth state championship and fourth with Cherry Creek in ten years. He previously won state titles with Arvada West and Chatfield and four with Mullen High School. After the game, Logan said, “It’s so rewarding, because we had so many injuries this year. We lost our starting running back, our starting left tackle, a tight end …” At age 67, after a coaching career that began in 1993 and calling Broncos games on the radio since 1990, Logan said, “I love working with kids. And I love coaching football. And I think — I know — there will be some things that I probably will give up, relatively soon, but it will not be coaching.” About the 2021 season, he said, “I think there were times this season that a lot of people counted us out, so my message to the kids was, ‘Let’s just keep working, keep chopping wood, and we’re going to be playing our best football once we get to the playoffs.’” Coach Logan was right. fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

Holiday

City-wide Toy Drive is in full swing Shopping Evening Denver Santa Claus Shop is collecting new toys for local children in need, many of whom otherwise might not have a toy to open during the Holidays. DSCS expects to serve 13,000 youngsters this year. “Our mission is ‘A Toy for Every Girl & Boy,’ and nothing, including COVID, keeps us from giving toys to kids in need,” said Scott Hamburg, President of DSCS. “We’ll do an outdoor Shop again this year because of COVID.” DSCS will have a “drive-thru” free toy giveaway in December instead of its traditional Toy Shop where Clients actually shop – choosing toys for their children. This aims to make Clients and volunteers safe as COVID lin-

gers. Families in need are invited to DSCS by local Social Service Agencies and Community Partners. Parents will drive up to receive NEW toys based on their children’s ages and gender. DSCS serves children ages newborn through 11 years old – and cannot accept any used toys or any new or used stuffed animals due to COVID.

Donations can be made online and in person. Companies or schools may hold Toy Drives or collect money to buy new toys for the Shop. Many retail partners are toy drop-off sites, including Denver Mattress, Larry H. Miller Dealerships, Dirty Duck Bar, Joy’s Consigned Furnishings, Happy Canyon Flowers, Prose Nails and Four Seasons Hotel. DSCS’s website -- denversantaclausshop.org -- has details on its Amazon and Walmart Toy Wish Lists plus how families can register to receive free toys. DSCS is a volunteer-run, nondenominational 501(c)(3) nonprofit celebrating its 91st year. It has helped well over 1 million local children in need in its long history.

Drug Side Effects – Cause and Prevention (Part 1 of 2)! Ever experienced “Drug Side Effects” or know someone who has? Simply put, a Drug Side Effect is when you develop one (or more) new symptom or condition not present before taking the drug. Ever been or know someone who has been prescribed a second drug to counter the “side effects” from the first drug? Or even, prescribed a third drug for the “side effects” from the second drug; and on and on, until taking multiple drugs for multiple new symptoms and conditions that were caused by the side effects from each drug prescribed? In Part 1 and 2 of these articles, I will share the causes of Drug Side Effects and how to prevent their harmful effects, if you must take drugs, at this time. ROOT CAUSE OF DRUG SIDE EFFECTS #1 of 2: Toxicity – All drugs are made of “chemicals” and all chemicals are toxic to the body. So, it’s no mystery that ingesting a poisonous substance has health consequences, commonly called “Drug Side Effects.” In addition to the primary chemically-active ingredients, your drugs may also include other toxic substances, such as synthetic polymers, dyes, Talc, etc. ROOT CAUSE OF DRUG SIDE EFFECTS #2 of 2: Nutrient Depletion – What is not well known is that chemicals deplete the body of macro- and micro-nutrients, such as essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, essential fatty acids, etc. Antibiotics, for example, deplete Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Vitamin K, and certain B Vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5 & B6), to name a few. Their common side effects include: nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, balance and hearing problems, skin rashes, itching, swelling, trouble breathing, sinus headache, yeast infections to serious heart and lymphatic conditions, again, just to name a few. In medicine it is called “drug-induced nutrient depletion” when the drug blocks the absorption, storage, metabolism, or synthesis of essential nutrients in the body. When nutrients are blocked or depleted over time, new health conditions develop and/or current health conditions get worse. Remember in my article, “5 Stages to Health or Disease!” (Villager, 09/09/21, P5), I shared: “Other than injury or heredity, all other causes of Disease start with Toxicity and Nutritional Deficiencies or Excesses (Stage 2).” Therefore… NUTRITION FACT #17: Drug Side Effects are symptoms and conditions caused by nutrient depletion and toxicity from the chemicals and other toxic substances in drugs. DRUG SIDE EFFECT PREVENTION #1 of 2: Limit drug use to life-threatening emergencies only, whether prescribed or over-the-counter. This was and still is the original purpose for formulating drugs for short-term use.

In emergencies, short-term use of drugs are able to save lives because of their ability to suppress symptoms and manipulate biochemistry, however, these actions on a daily basis may lead to serious side effects. From my articles, you now know that the causes of Drug Side Effects and Disease starts with nutrient depletion and toxicity, so it may have occurred to you that there is only one reason to seek medical attention today: Life-Threatening Emergencies! Life-Threatening Emergencies include “unconsciousness, head or spinal injury, non-stop severe pain, uncontrollable bleeding, wound suturing and to cast a broken bone, which may or may not be life-threatening at the time of the injury.” DRUG SIDE EFFECT PREVENTION #2 of 2: For all other symptoms and health concerns, choose Clinical Nutrition. For example, our Clinical Nutrition Therapy provides non-toxic, side-effect free, safe, effective, whole food, therapeutic supplements, that are clinically-formulated to provide the

nutrients your body requires to correct the causes of your symptoms and health concerns and thereby, healing itself. These therapeutic supplements are recommended and dispensed based on a Clinical Nutrition Analysis of the Laboratory Reports from testing your biochemistry (blood, urine, saliva, hair, stool and genetics). Testing means, there is no guessing…you are provided the exact nutrients your body requires to heal itself. NUTRITION FACT #18: Limit Drug use to Life-Threatening Emergencies and use Clinical Nutrition to identify and provide the nutrients your body needs to correct the causes of all other symptoms and health challenges and thus, heal itself. For a copy of the above-referenced article, “5 Stages to Health or Disease,” you may refer to its past issues or Email: Villager@ AdvancedClinicalNutrition.com. Subject Line: 5 Stages – V+ACN Also, please call me for a FREE Initial Consultation for help with the above! Sports

The reality of Covid, and a Harbaugh classic Hello again. I’m back after a month of dealing with Covid and its after-effects. Now that I can speak from first-hand experience, I’m going to divert from sports to begin, so I can offer a few comments about the virus that has brought the world to its knees. First, my context. I tested positive on November 2 and isolated for the next 12 days. My

symptoms included an intermittent cough, a fever that ranged between 100 and 103, no taste and not much of an appetite (I lost 13 pounds.), and a total lack of strength and energy. (These aren’t everyone’s symptoms, though fever and cough apparently are quite common.) On Monday, November 15, with trouble breathing, I was admitted to Sky Ridge Hospital in

Lone Tree. Tests determined that I had blood clots in my lungs and left leg. (Clots, I learned, are a frequent Covid side-effect.) I hadn’t been prescribed any specific Covid-fighting medication while I isolated, and once in the hospital doctors there focused on fighting the blood clots and assisting my breathing. After two overnights in Room 3306, I was sent home with oxygen 24/7 and blood thinner—self-administered shots of Lovenox in the belly twice a day at first, then Pradaxa orally, morning and night. My doctor says I could be off the oxygen before the end of December, but the blood thinner will continue at least until the end of January, probably for life. I temporarily lost hearing in my right ear, but it has returned. I think I’m finally turning the corner. When I asked the doc if I needed to get a booster shot, he replied: “You’ve just had yours,” referring to my bout of Covid and the natural immunity it would produce. Maybe sometime next year, he added, if I still want one. Having endured that ordeal, my first reaction to coverage of the pandemic is that no one quoted on television or in the newspapers as an “expert” has any real idea of what it’s like to get Covid or contend with what happens next, because they haven’t lived (and survived) it. What I now realize is that all of the show hosts, pundits, politicians—and even the doctors— who pontificate about masks

and social distancing and vaccines and travel bans view them only through a political lens. They’re all into criticizing another’s position while espousing the opposite, and placing blame for doing too much or not enough. If you listen closely, not one speaks with any actual knowledge about what it’s like to contract a real case of Covid, much less what can follow. That’s not even the point of their commentary. They talk about how Americans should live, or which policies their political leaders should adopt, instead of the consequences of any personal choices that result in infection. The fact is, a real case of Covid can be a scary trip. It isn’t this bad for everyone, but it was for me, and it could have been worse. Twice during my illness—for the only times in my life—I thought I might die. It was terrifying. My own attitude—before I came down with the virus—was that being vaccinated was better than not; that wearing a mask was a small inconvenience that was worth it if it protected me or anyone else; and that, in the end, each person had to decide for himself or herself what was right in their situation. Post-Covid, my thinking hasn’t changed. I now just add that if vaccination doesn’t prevent getting Covid, it might at least contribute to surviving it. So, my advice is to take symptoms seriously from the first hint, and to get tested at the first suspicion. Getting on it early is very

important. And if you get it, be on the lookout for after-effects; they can kill you. Beyond that, live your life. * * * EASING BACK INTO THE SPORTS REALM, Jim Harbaugh finally beating Ohio State and coaching Michigan into the CFP gives me the opportunity to retell my favorite Harbaugh story. As related by former CU All-America Jay Leeuwenburg in a book (Yes I Can! Yes You Can!) that Jay and I did back in 2005, this anecdote attests to Harbaugh’s competitive fire. Jay was playing center for the Indianapolis Colts in a playoff game against Pittsburg, and Harbaugh was the quarterback: . . . . Chad Brown came off the corner and just annihilated Harbaugh, just killed him. We’re in the huddle, and Jim starts talking. But nobody can understand him. We said, ‘What the heck are you saying?’ He mumbles, ‘Hold on,’ and he pulls his two front teeth out of his mouth. He’s got blood streaming out of his mouth, and he couldn’t enunciate the words. He’d lost his teeth! He took his teeth, and he put them in his sock . . . Jim is one of the toughest guys I’ve ever known. He didn’t miss a play. . . . SAVVYSENIOR

Dear Savvy Senior, My 80-year-old father has an old flip phone he carries around with him for emergency purposes, but I’ve heard that these devices will soon be phased out. Is this true? If so, how can we know if his phone will be affected, and where can I find him a simple new one that he can operate. Searching Daughter

If his phone has a frequency of 900 megahertz (MHz) or 2100 MHz, it’s 3G. You can also look for a “3G” icon at the top corner of his phone, but not all 3G phones have that icon.

How to Upgrade

If you find that you do need to upgrade your dad’s cellphone, carriers are offering discounts and special promotions on replacement devices. If you’re worried about your dad having to learn your way around a new device, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of modern new flip phones available that work on the next-generation networks.

Or, if your dad decides that he would rather forge ahead without a phone than upgrade, then he will need to cancel the service. Most carriers will let you cancel your plan without any penalty. However, if he forgets to cancel his phone plan and doesn’t upgrade to a working device, the company won’t automatically stop charging him just because he isn’t able to access their network.

How to Recycle

If your dad does have to replace his old cellphone, the best way to dispose of it is to recycle it. Large retailers, such as Best Buy, offer recycling programs for old electronics. Or you can search for local recycling programs on websites like Call2Recycle. org and Earth911.com.

Colorado’s Susie Finley 2021 Enterprising Women of the Year Award winner Prestigious Awards Program Recognizes World’s Top Women Entrepreneurs Susie Finley, founder and principal of Ascent Living Communities (ALC), a Colorado-based senior living operator and developer, has been recognized as a 2021 Enterprising Women of the Year Award winner by Enterprising Women Magazine. The annual tribute to the world’s top women entrepreneurs is widely considered one of the most prestigious recognition programs for women business owners in the United States and globally. To win, nominees must demonstrate that they have fast-growth businesses, mentor or actively support other women and girls involved in entrepreneurship and stand out as leaders in their communities. Winners were recognized in seven categories based on annual sales revenue. Finley was one of just 15 honorees recognized in the $10-$25 million category. “It’s an incredible honor to be recognized with this award and be included in what is a very prestigious list of women entrepreneurs from across the world,” said Finley who was honored in November at the organization’s 19th Annual Awards Celebration & Conference held in Florida. Finley, who majored in gerontology and has spent her entire 24-year career in the field, today oversees three senior living communities in the Denver metro area including Village at Belmar, Carillon at Belleview Station and Hilltop Reserve, scheduled to open later this month. She is responsible for the evolution of Ascent’s operating model, strategic planning, functional programming, project design, and optimizing ongoing operational performance. In

addition, Finley and her ALC team have plans to expand their Colorado communities in the coming years. “We are a true Coloradoto-the-core company and we take great pride in creating lifestyle communities that allow our residents to continue to explore, engage and appreciate the Colorado lifestyle that we all love – no matter what your age may be,” said Finley. “From the food to the arts, entertainment and our amazing outdoors, we are focused on delivering the life experiences that help our residents thrive and provide the peace of mind that their families and loved ones look for in a senior living community.” Prior to joining Ascent in her current capacity in 2013, Finley served as executive director for multiple Denver-area senior living communities and a large national senior living firm. She began her career working in various capacities in dayto-day operations for local and regional senior living operators in the Midwest. Finley received a Bachelor of Science in Gerontology from the Ohio State University. Finley is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and an Assisted Living Administrator. In addition, she serves on the Board of Trustees for Temple Emanuel, and previously served as a Board Member and the Assisted Living Chair of the Colorado Healthcare Association from 2011 to 2018.

Greg Brophy thinks the GOP can sweep Colorado in 2022 BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

In a talk to the Arapahoe County Republican Breakfast Club on December 1 at Maggiano’s DTC, Greg Brophy, former Colorado legislator and chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Ken Buck told fellow party members that, “Democrats are hard-core leftists telling themselves that, ‘We’re going to do better if we give our base what they want.’ ” He also said that, “(Governor) Jared Polis is an absolutely brilliant politician,” whose goal is to run for president, “but he doesn’t have enough charisma.” However, Brophy said, in order to run for president, “he has to first get re-elected in 2022, and I really think that…Heidi (Ganahl) can give him a run for his money.”

How to choose the perfect gift or get out of giving one altogether BY DOROTHY ROSBY

‘Tis the season to run up our credit card bills and give our loved ones a good head start on their next garage sale. It doesn’t have to be that way. The year I bought two talking trout and a fruit cake at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve, I decided it was time to change my gift-giving ways. As a public service, I’m going to share with you my tips for gift giving:

When to shop: • Don’t wait until the night before Christmas when all through the house, not a gift has been bought, not even for your spouse. More worthless gadgets, doohickies and thing-a-ma-bobs are purchased just before Christmas than

at any other time of the year. And most of them are bought in those last frantic moments before the reindeer appear. Shoppers who started out with high hopes break down on December 24 and settle for an electric carrot peeler—or a talking trout. • But don’t buy your gifts too far in advance either. You could forget you bought them—or where you put them. Or you could find that by Christmas, you’re not even on speaking terms with the potential recipients. • Where to shop: • Shop locally whenever possible. It’s good for your community, plus it’s easier for your recipient to return a gift you purchased

locally. And they may want to do that if you got them an electric carrot peeler.

• How to choose your gift: • Think long and hard before buying a loved one a personal care item like a tube of cellulite reduction cream or a snore stopper. But if after careful consideration, you still think it’s a good gift idea, write “from Santa” on the tag. • Before you purchase a particular gadget or thing-a-ma-bob for some unsuspecting individual on your Christmas list, ask yourself if they’ll use it often enough to keep it within reach. Or will they store it away until that rare occasion when they want to use it but are unable to locate it behind their

home snow cone machine and their frittata flipper? • Have more than one idea for each person on your gift list. Coming to blows with another desperate parent over the last Batcave Playset has a way of dampening the old Christmas spirit. So does calling home from jail. • Whatever you choose, be sure and include a gift receipt when you wrap it up. Your recipient will appreciate it and you’ll never have to know that they returned the muffin top baking cups you bought them. • How to get out of shopping altogether: • Give gift cards. If you don’t like to shop, your recipient does it for you and they still feel like you’re

2022 Corolla SE Hybrid is futuristic leader BY H. THROTTLE AUTOMOTIVE COLUMNIST

Transportation can travel down many rural roads and city freeways. Freedom of travel has been an American tradition from the early pioneering era. Newly arrived citizens were free to wander wherever they pleased with only the predication fears of wild animals or Indians tribes attempting to protest their lands. Horses, carriages, wagons, “shanks mare” (walking) were the early modes of transportation and river passages for boats and barges also played a role in the development of major cities along the banks of American pristine rivers. Then came the trains, and then Henry Ford building the Model T and later the more improved powerful Model A, still a prized possessions of car collectors to this day. A transportation revolution

is occurring presently with the rise of the electric battery powered vehicles that are rapidly sweeping the auto industry with advanced hybrid technology. These cars with small engines and a friction scientific charging system can keep powerful batteries fully charged for hundreds of miles without the need for additional boosting as sole battery driven cars are now reaching hundreds of miles on powerful battery systems with warranties up to five/years and 150,000 miles. The sole electric cars, while still a small percentage of the nation’s fleet of cars and trucks, is expanding at an exhilarating pace and President Biden is planning massive charging stations to be constructed across America to serve the electric fleet of vehicles. While the internal combustion engine still runs the world’s major fleet of cars, trucks, planes

and trains, a major evolution in transportation is underway and progressing successfully. Leading the way in the new hybrid concept is Toyota that has many hybrid vehicles along with some new hydrogen powered experimental models and no doubt someday nuclear fueled vehicles. This leads to the car feature of the week that is a 2022 Toyota Corolla SE hybrid model with a very competitive price tag of $23,650 with only a few additional upgrades. This circles back to transportation taking many roads and choices for travel relating to taste, travel demands and personal wealth. There is a vast gap in today’s auto world in choice and pricing. The Corolla hybrid is a wise and frugal choice for those who just want to get to work, have a second car, and really like to drive a simple car that can produce over 53 miles per gallon in

fuel economy with rising gasoline prices. The test-driven Corolla is no slacker in acceleration with more than adequate performance, along with exhilarating economy. The 1.5L, four-cylinder engine works perfectly with the continuous variable transmission. This is a “Drive” mode only with an option to run on battery power, if desired, and can be changed instantly from battery to engine while in motion. Toyota has equipped the Corolla with their latest 2.0 Safety Sense System that includes the outstanding pre-collision warnings such as pedestrian detection,

lane departure alerts, and radar cruise control and the Star Safety System. The car is so new that it has not been given a safety rating but should maintain Toyota excellent scores. The price is right, the drive is sporty with the instant electric power surge, fully loaded with safety systems, and lastly this Corolla is attractive with sweeping lines and “Celestite Gray” metallic paint, riding on 15” alloy wheels and has final assembly in Aichi, Japan. This Corolla will take you anywhere you want to travel and leave some money in your wallet or purse.
