Incumbents are re-elected in South Suburban Parks & Rec District four years as a result of the transition of SSPR elections to odd-numbered years from the current even-numbered year elections. In 2025, the seats occupied by Pye, Barrett and Lawful will be open because all three will be term-limited. Although SSPR serves over 151,000 residents in four cities, two towns, and the unincorporated areas of three counties, the total number of votes received by the eight candidates in this election for three board seats averaged 560. This

was a polling place election with two voting locations. It also allowed voters to apply for and receive an absentee ballot. Pye and Barrett each received 976 votes and Lawful received 830. The next highest vote total belonged to John Priddy, who received 547 votes. After Priddy, other candidates’ vote totals were Alexis Barrere with 426, Elizabeth Watson with 315, Kathleen Turley with 292 and Michael Kohut with 117. fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

been really heartwarming to see the community embrace Marjorie Park as an arts asset, and it further galvanizes MOA’s presence in the community and mission of ‘making art a part of everyday life’.” The park is named after Marjorie P. Madden, who co-founded the Museum of Outdoor Arts in 1981 with her husband, commercial real-estate developer, John W. Madden Jr., and their daughter, Cynthia Madden Leitner. In March 2022, MOA announced the relocation of its headquarters from Englewood to Marjorie Park, which will take place this June. Marjorie Park features more than 40 permanent artworks, most of which are sculptures. A labyrinth-like hardscape feature, designed after the seven petal vesica, serves as the grand centerpiece of the 2.1-acre park. Other park features include stadium grass seating, a lion’s den sculpture walk, kinetic sculptures, and a life-size bronze sculpture series of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by sculptor Harry Marinsky.

Partner of former Aurora Police chief charged with making false allegation of child sex abuse against Jurinsky BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENT REPORTER

On May 16, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office made public an arrest warrant against Robin Niceta, partner of Vanessa Wilson, recently ousted Aurora Chief of Police, for calling in a false report of child sexual abuse against Aurora City Council Member Danielle Jurinsky. The accusation involved Jurinsky’s two-yearold son. The false tip to the Arapahoe County child abuse and neglect hotline came in on January 28, the day after Jurinsky had disparaged the performance of Wilson in a radio interview, calling her “trash.” Although the tip was made anonymously, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s investigation determined that it came from a cell phone registered to Niceta. The investigation

Correction: 11% of ballots were returned in South Metro Fire Rescue board election In our report published last week about the results of the May 3rd South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) election for board members representing director districts 2, 6 and 7, we mistakenly calculated the percentage of ballots returned based on the population of the entire SMFR district. Since the only thing on the ballot was the election of directors, ballots were only sent to registered voters in the three (out of seven) director districts of SMFR in which directors were being elected. The total number of ballots mailed to registered voters in those three districts was 165,500 and 18,364 ballots were counted as of election day, reflecting a turnout of 11.1%. also disclosed that Niceta communicated with someone in the Department of Human Services, where the complaint was lodged and where Niceta worked at the time, about the allegation two hours after it was made. Since the accusation came in at 5:00 p.m., it was determined that Niceta could not have known about it that

soon through her regular job duties at the department. Jurinsky, in interviews with local media, talked about the anguish she suffered for two weeks while these “heinous charges” were being investigated, saying she “couldn’t sleep” and “couldn’t look at my son without crying.” Jurinsky has called for all child abuse cases handled by Niceta in the past to be investigated because she believes Niceta could have unfairly accused other parents of abuse, as she did Jurinsky. Jurinsky said that she had never met Niceta. The investigation into who made the false claim began after Jurinsky was cleared of all accusations. Former Chief Wilson was fired by Aurora City Manager Jim Twombly on April 6. Robin Niceta resigned from her position in the depart-

ment of human services via an email on May 4. Luc Hatlestad, public information officer for Arapahoe County, said in a statement that Arapahoe County takes allegations about vulnerable adults and children “with the highest levels of professionalism and compassion,” but it also “takes allegations of all g seriously-- especially when

they involve employees.” No disciplinary action was taken against Niceta because she resigned voluntarily. Arapahoe County Deputy John Bartmann, public information officer for the Sheriff’s office, stated that there was no probable cause found with regard to the accusations against Jurinsky and further investigation found probable cause to charge Robin Niceta with Retaliation Against an Elected Official, a class six felony, along with a misdemeanor violation of the law covering Persons Required to Report Child Abuse or Neglect. As of May 16, there was an active warrant for Niceta, but she had not yet been arrested. According to reports, bond in the case was set at $4,000 personal recognizance. fmiklin.villager@gmail. com

The blame game Who is to blame for inflation and the rise in prices for everything? One of the saddest shortage is baby formula. We should have Coors or Budweiser brew baby formulas and we wouldn’t have a shortage. Seems like we have plenty of beer and spirits. The almost historic spike in prices can be blamed on the 2020 election and the attack on fossil fuels by the left. There is simply not enough “green energy” to fuel our cars, homes, industry, factories and farms. Coal fired power plants are shutting down rapidly and there is not enough wind or daytime solar sunlight to operate our economy. If you think things are bad now, just wait until electricity and gasoline are rationed, or not available. How long can you last in your home without electric power? There will be no way to charge your phone except go run your car or truck until you run out of gasoline. Televisions and radios will be down, and you had better have a battery radio somewhere in the house. The gas station pumps won’t work, and the refineries will start to close for lack of power. Food in our freezers will spoil and the electric appliances will fail. Furnaces won’t operate and it can be a cold winter with frozen pipes. The water plant won’t be able to operate without electricity and even emergency generators will run out of fuel. Probably the greatest challenge will be obtaining fresh drinking water. Canned food will work until the supply runs out. Dried beans and rice have long

shelf lives and can be heated outside on fires as we search for fuel that will burn enough to heat food and boil water. The Mormons have one year of food stored in their home basements in large containers. They also have stake food emergency supplies. Our electric grid system is very fragile, and electricity cannot be stored except in batteries. We don’t have that capacity except in our new electric cars that will be dead in the garage. This is just a possible hint of what can occur if we don’t protect our energy sources pipelines, oil fields, and natural gas lines. The Keystone pipeline shut down by President Biden was the beginning of the rise in fuel prices. Canadian oil would have ultimately flowed into the United States for future generations rather than sold and shipped to foreign nations. Maybe it can be saved in time. Would the Russians have invaded Ukraine if president Trump was still in office? Witnessing the abandonment of billions of dollars of military equipment and cash in a rapid retreat from Afghanistan, Putin made his move to restore part of his prior USSR empire. He underestimated that the former Russian population did not want to rejoin the former Communist regime. Putin wanted the fertile breadbasket of the former empire and that’s why he is destroying homes and towns, he just wants the farmland. Here in the United States we’re allowing foreign interests, primarily Chinese,

to buy thousands of acres of our fertile farmland. Under the Clinton regime we sold half of the U.S. uranium production to Russian interests. Along with seizing the Russian oligarch’s yachts maybe we should take back our uranium, far more critical than the fancy boats. Food prices are escalating but don’t blame the farmers. They are paying over $5 a gallon for diesel to run their tractors, double the price of fertilizer to grow their grain, soybeans and corn. A shortage of farm labor and higher interest rates at the chain banks, replacing the caring hometown bankers. Along with producing the food, the cost of processing beef, pork, and cereals have risen with the cost of paper products, plastic and a shortage of labor. Truckers are having to pay huge increases to fuel their rigs and there is a shortage of drivers. If electric fuel pumps fail trucks can’t be refueled to deliver food. Ports are clogged with supply challenges to unload ships carrying goods from foreign countries. Let’s start producing our drugs and computer chips here in the United States. We need to be thankful that we have such great food stores and employees that can combat these challenges and keep the food chain working and the shelves restocked. Certainly, we can blame Covid19 for some of the misery, but the rise of inflation has little to do with the pandemic. It is about leadership and what is happening in Washington D.C. The nation is being flooded with dollars borrowed from China and Japan, or just printing more paper currency. There is a desperate attempt by the Biden administration to buy votes

for the midterm election. Colorado, with Democratic leadership, is at the top of the “gravy-train” ride as the national debt is now beyond recovery and money inflated to pay bills with rising prices and inflation as a result. While the nation stands on a brink of financial ruin, the Congress is about to send $40 billion more to Ukraine, money that will never be repaid. But It is better to send cash than military troops to engage the Russians who make us all cringe in horror with their barbaric bombardments of civilian targets. Almost a script for a science fiction movie of the destruction of the world. Let us hope that the Russian people will see through what is happening and end Putin’s regime, sooner rather than later. In the meantime, the midterm elections may bring some relief with some new leadership in Congress and the United States Senate. While these life-threatening forces bear down on the nation we have the ageold abortion battle emerging that has been ongoing for 40 years over Roe vs. Wade. This is a last gasp of the left to stir up this challenging topic of abortion that is very controversial. Maybe, along with the checks flowing out to voters we should include a supply of complimentary birth control pills that might help solve unwanted pregnancies. My bet is that the Supreme Court will withdraw any decisions until after the November 8 election. There is plenty of blame to cast around, but we need to seek common sense solutions and elect good candidates to public office.

Opinion

Remember Stagflation? “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes” is a quote attributed to Mark Twain. In the political and economic world, this maxim is proving true, as we are witnessing today. The misery index is one such bit of history, dating back to the Carter presidency in the late 1970s. Calculated by adding the unemployment and inflation rates together, the misery index “measures the degree of economic distress felt by everyday people.” It is currently just over 12 percent, and that’s being generous given how the government calculates inflation. The misery index reached 15 percent just after COVID hit and the country locked down, closing myriad businesses. During the Carter era it topped 20 percent. Another golden oldie, stagflation, is a term first used in the 1960s in the United Kingdom, describing a period of a stagnating economy along with rampant inflation, hence the coined term. It is simply a period of both inflation and a decline in the gross domestic product (GDP). Stagflation may be the anchor

hanging on Democrat necks ahead of the November midterm elections. Real GDP contracted in the first quarter of this year by 1.4 percent, negative growth. The last such contraction was during the first half of 2020 when COVID shut down businesses, travel, restaurants, and life in general. Now America is post-COVID and BY BRIAN C. the economy should JOONDEPH be booming. One more quarter of negative GDP puts us officially into a recession, something the Democrats won’t be eager to showcase as they ask American voters to leave them in charge of the nation’s affairs come November. Inflation is calculated based on many assumptions of the costs of various goods and services, all plugged into complex formulas that would make your head spin. It is the change in cost of this basket of goods that determines the rate of inflation. Like any other formula, the maxim “garbage in garbage out” applies. For example, energy is only 7 percent in relative importance in this basket of goods. Is energy important? Ask anyone filling their car or truck with gasoline

every week, spending over $100 when a few years ago they paid half that amount. While the official government figure for inflation is at 8.5 percent, compared to only 4.2 percent a year ago, the true inflation figure is north of 15 percent. Why does the government downplay inflation? Two reasons. One is politics. President Biden already has “I did that” stickers peppering gas pumps around the country, with gas prices hitting a record high at the time of this writing. High inflation numbers don’t help the political party currently in charge and largely responsible for the rampant inflation. Second is government itself. Benefit programs, from welfare to Medicare, are linked to the consumer price index. As it rises, so should these benefits, but that will cost the government more money, dollars they prefer to spend on tampon dispensers in school boys’ rooms or in Ukraine to secure their border, while leaving ours wide open. It’s not clear if the Republican party offers a good alternative to Democrat policy nonsense but expect the term “stagflation” to become a campaign issue as it should given the current trajectory of the economy and America.

CHERRY CREEK’S FINEST I would never have guessed that I would be an avid reader in past years. Lately, I have been so obsessed with one particular author. Her name is Colleen Hoover, and her books are phenomenal. I love the way she writesit’s always easy to follow yet very intriguing. I have gone through three of her books in the past month! Reading has been a great hobby for me lately. At the end of my senior year, I find myself with minimal homework. I always like to be productive after school, so this is a great pastime activity. The first book I read from Miss Hoover’s collection was It Ends With Us. All I can say about this book is that it is worth reading! I loved it. I love all things romantic- mainly books, and this was the ultimate romance! It’s about Lily, a young girl who lives in Boston. She falls in love with an amazing man but to quote the back of the book, “sometimes it’s those we love that hurt us the most.” I was assigned this book for a class but sped through it in three days and loved every minute. The second book that I read from my new favorite

author is called Ugly Love. This is the ultimate romance! It follows the complicated story of Miles Archer and Tate Collins. I loved this book because it was all about character development. I truly felt like I knew everything about the characters by the end of this book, making the ending even harder. I read Ugly Love even faster than I read It Ends With Us. Colleen Hoover knows how to draw in hopeless romantics! I’ve read the most recent book, and Colleen Hoover’s most recent novel is Reminders of Him. This book was different than the other two books I enjoyed. There were still components of a love story, but it followed Kenna, a girl in her mid-twenties working to see her daughter after being released from prison. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster- I found myself shedding a tear during a few chapters. Reminders of Him never failed

to draw me in and connect to the story- I couldn’t recommend it more! I have been spending all of my time on one author- and I even have more books on the way by Colleen Hoover! But, I plan to use this momentum to keep reading. It helps me fall asleep at night and clear my mind before bed. Stay tuned for what else I read!

BOOK REVIEW Bel Canto

This book was published in 2001 by Ann Patchett. The setting is South America at the home of the country’s vice president in which a birthday party is being held with important international guests and a famous opera singer. The party is interrupted by terrorists, who take the gathering hostage. Over time the terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds. I loved this book! It was so rich in feeling and sensory pleasure that I could almost hear the singing. It was a real treasure to read.

Did you know that ketchup can clean copper and that mustard can be used as an exfoliating face mask? Also, they’re both really good on hot dogs. And did you know that you can keep carryout pizza warm on the way home by setting it on the passenger seat and turning on the seat warmer? If you have a passenger and they resent having to sit in the backseat just tell them the pizza called shotgun. These are all valuable tips I learned in an online article called 200 Hacks to Make Life Easier. If you waste as much time online as I do, you’ve noticed that what we once called “tips” or “hints from Heloise” are now called hacks. And there are a lot of them. There are life hacks, travel hacks, cooking hacks and

personal finance hacks. There are car maintenance hacks, ballroom dancing hacks and rock climbing hacks. And there are hacks to burgle proof your home, hacks to prevent your computer from being hacked and writing hacks to keep you from being a hack. I’m a sucker for all of them—except the rock climbing hacks. I’d be hacking my way through life were it not for one problem. There are no hacks for remembering hacks. I can never remember the clever trick I read to solve the particular problem I’m having at the moment I’m having it. That could be a real problem for rock climbers. But even for those of us with less pressing issues it can be troublesome. Is it white vinegar you use to clean minerals off your shower door? Or

balsamic? Is it peanut butter you use to get gum out of your hair? Or jelly? The next time I need to wash our blender, will I remember to fill it with soapy water and run it? And will I remember to put the lid on before I do it? When we run out of kindling at our next campfire, will I remember that Doritos make excellent tinder and not just the “flamin’ hot nacho” flavor either? And if we do bring Doritos to our next campout, will there be any left by the time I remember? I did come up with a hack for remembering one of the tricks in the 200 Hacks to Make Life Easier article. Here’s the hack: A strand of spaghetti can be used to light a hard-toreach candle wick—as long as you don’t cook the spaghetti first. I have a few long matches that I occasionally use to light a candle or a burner on my gas stove when the igniter doesn’t work. I was pondering how I’d remember this useful hack when I run out of them. Then inspiration struck! If I store a piece of spaghetti in the box with the long matches, I’ll see it every time I use one. By the time I run out of the matches, the spaghetti hack will be as ingrained in me as all the hacks I learned back before hacks were called hacks— like how you should sweep the top step first and that you should always put the carrier back before you drive away from a drivethrough bank. I went to the kitchen, got a piece of spaghetti and reached for the box of long matches on the top shelf of the cupboard. But as I did it, I bumped a votive candle holder and it fell off the shelf. Fortunately it didn’t break. Unfortunately the glass plate it landed on did, spewing shards of glass and wet cat food all over the kitchen and onto the carpet in the hallway. I went ahead and put the spaghetti in the box and then surveyed the damage. I wonder if there’s a hack for getting wet pet food out of carpet. any said this year’s “Theatre of Dreams” fundraiser was over the top! There was dinner, a live auction and very special entertainment including a finale with star Will Liverman, that included Matthew Plenk and Kira Sills-DeSurra who had performed earlier. Central City Opera is the fifth oldest opera company in the U.S. founded in 1932 - renowned for world-class performances. Each summer festival is presented in the 550-seat historic opera house built in 1878. In the video of the decades-long journey, it was called a “jewel box theater” steeped in history and tradition. Its history is basically the history of Colorado.CCO has a loyal and generous following of sponsors and donors and a robust strategic plan. Currently, it is just $4.3 million away from its goal of raising $20. million. fter a fabulous season, Denver Ballet Guild’s Les Demoiselle and Les Cygnette programs concluded in March. This year we focused on the diversity of our Denver theater community and supporting smaller companies. We started with Shrek, The Musical, at Candlelight Dinner Playhouse, one of the first Denver area venues to reopen with live theater. Next, was our annual kick-off event this time at the Van Gogh Alive show. We saw Musical Young Frankenstein, at Vintage Theater where our group filled more than half of the theater! We held our annual Father/Daughter event at ACE Eat and Serve followed closely by Elf, The Musical, at the Arvada Center. The highlight of this year’s program was probably Hamilton in February which we were able to attend thanks to our long-standing support of the DCPA. We wrapped up the year in March with Colorado Ballet's production of The Wizard of Oz. We will begin accepting registrations for next year's Les Demoiselle and Les Cygnette programs in May. We look forward to continuing to support smaller companies, especially Denver Ballet Guild's grant recipient companies now that they are back on their feet, so to speak! While we wait on their next season announcements to finalize our program, we already have tickets for Tony award-winning Hadestown and Mean Girls! New for this year, the program is open to all students, both young men and women. If you know any students entering 6th -12th grade next fall, please encourage them to participate. It is going to be an awesome year as more live theater and dance returns to Denver! www.denverballetguild. org/Guild-for-Teens. –Allison Dodge, DBG VP Marketing

In 1994, she, and her late husband Roy Robinson (off-shore oil drilling business) moved to Highlands Ranch to follow Dean’s MediaNews Group headquarters move. Ladies for Liberty did a very successful toy drive for Rocky Mountains Children’s Hospital Cancer unit. We were honored to deliver hundreds of toys to pediatric cancer kids. Each toy represented a smile and it made it so worth while to see the grateful staff who dedicate their lives to treating children with Cancer. One of our members, Aja Cary, thought of this idea when her son Wesley was diagnosed with Leukemia this February and she wanted to give back and support the amazing people and staff that has been so wonderful to her family as they continue their road to recovery through their wonderful care. The annual event, hosted by Junior Achievement Rocky Mountain and Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, honors some of Colorado’s most distinguished business leaders of yesterday and today for their commitment and investment in the community.

set powerful examples for others to follow. The list includes Robert L. Albin, Clara Brown, Tim Gill, Robert Newman, Curt & Nancy Richardson and Donald L. Sturm.

The 2022 Hall of Fame laureates are part of a league of outstanding individuals who have made legendary contributions to the free enterprise system. They have experienced a lifetime of business success and have

2022 marked not only a return to an in-person celebration of the annual event but also a string of impressive JA successes.

Junior Achievement-Rocky Mountain, Inc. (JA)

Demand from educators for JA programs is so strong in the organization’s JA Finance Park location at American Furniture Warehouse that they’re at capacity and adding a second park that will double the number of kids JA reaches with the Harvard Best Practice for teaching financial literacy. In January of 2020, JA announced a new educational facility – a total place of discovery. JA also wanted to build an experience to help kids discover their path to purpose –

exploring careers in an interactive and immersive way and this building will be the new location of the Colorado Business Hall of Fame. Fast forward – just two months ago, JA broke ground on the JA Free Enterprise Center which will house the Daniel’s Fund JA Dream Accelerator and the Robert and Judi Newman JA Finance Park. JA will celebrate the “topping-off” of the new facility in June and is looking to host students in the spring next year.

About Junior Achievement: JA is part of the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to motivating kids for future career success, self-sufficiency, and

financial acumen. We accomplish this through a huge network of stellar volunteers who share their stories with young people and deliver lessons in career readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. JA has gained a reputation as a global force for good. In fact, JA Worldwide, which oversees programs in 115 countries received a nomination for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. Why? Because for centuries, unemployment and poverty have led to political instability, violence and war. By economically empowering youth, JA is serving as a conduit for peace and improved lives.

Everyone possesses unique knowledge, skills and characteristics, but as we’ve learned during the more than three decades of this event, our Hall of Fame laureates consistently display certain notable qualities. The theme of our event, “A Pioneering Spirit,” captured the traits exuded by these exemplary individuals: persistence, determination, the willingness to take bold risks, and the desire to make a difference. We want to thank our partner, the Denver Metro Chamber, and our sponsors, UMB, Confluence Companies, IMA Financial Group, and Empower Retirement for their amazing support and enthusiasm for this event! Cancer League’s Hope Ball has 51 sponsors, 53 years of service, a new venue and shatters its own fundraising records! The all-volunteer (400 member) organization works with passion and commitment to help thousands fight cancer. Hope Ball FLEURISH bears the tagline: Dedicated to the Ones We Love and is the annual signature event of Cancer League of Colorado (CLC).Since its founding in 1969, the nonprofit has served Colorado and raised and awarded over $20 million for innovative cancer research and patient care. This year’s Hope Ball was exceptional in so many ways. Gary and Barb Reece said it best. To donate or get involved: cancerleague.org.

Ladies and Gentlemen: We are humbled and excited to announce that Cancer League of Colorado’s 2022 Hope Ball was the most successful event in our organization’s 53-year history! While not yet final, we believe the net dollars raised in that one night, including the $200,000 generously pledged as a paddle raise match by MDC/Richmond American Homes Foundation, exceeded $1.1 MILLION for cancer-related research, clinical trials and patient services in the state of Colorado! This amount is almost double the previous high for a Cancer League event! Our unending gratitude goes out to our extremely generous audience who participated in our inspiring paddle raise, the exciting live auction, and/or our extensive silent auction, as well as to our amazing group of 51 sponsors that underwrote this event and provided the catalyst for this incomparable fundraising experience to take place. In addition, we are so grateful to those who contributed items for our silent and live auctions, with special thanks from the bottom of our hearts to Kori and Randy White and Wheel Pros for their generous gifts to the President’s Gallery and Live Auction, as well as Candi, Doug and Brandon Moreland, their families and their family of dealerships for their donation of the beautiful 2022 Jeep Wrangler. Those who attended the Hope Ball in person or virtually will confirm that there was truly magic in the room, as the evening lived up to its theme of “Celebrating Life.” It’s hard to pinpoint the source of the magic that we all experienced, whether it was the location of the venue being right across from the Cancer Center, the beautiful sounds of Moments Notice, the spectacular decor, or just the chance for all of us finally to be together again in person. Whatever the source, none of it could have happened without the tremendous efforts of our volunteers over the last several months, including the night of the event. We are extremely grateful to everyone who participated in some way to make this event happen. While we won’t list all the volunteer names, we would like to recognize these individuals who provided leadership of this group in order to ensure the success of the 2022 Hope Ball: Arlene Mohler Johnson and Dr. Saketh Guntupalli, our Honorary Co-Chairs Edie Marks, Committee Chair Julie Reece, Silent Auction Elise Marks Gruitch, Silent Auction Donations Kori and Randy White, Live Auction Anna Miller, Auction Closing Annie Mohler, Auction Photography Suzanne Alliano Rossick, Social Media and Marketing Jeff Reece, Videography, Media and Programming Murphy Huston, Emcee Rosalina Diecidue, Patrick Simmons, Amy Bible and Nicole Swank, Decor and Flowers Diane Brandon Hadley and Suzy Hagmaier, Treasurers Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this magical night. We hope to see you at our other fun events this summer, starting with our golf tournament coming up on June 20th. With Gratitude, Gary Reece, President, and Barbara Reece, Vice President of Fundraising Cancer League of Colorado, Inc.

Despite his decorated status as the winningest coach in Colorado high school sports history, an inducted member of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, and the countless number of collegiate and MLB athletes he has produced, Johnson still remains an influential source of encouragement for his players, both on and off the field. “‘Coach J’ is a mentor for me and so many other kids,” senior Kyle Barkley said. “We all know that we can trust him with pretty much anything…He has not only helped me with skills in baseball, but he has taught me how to be a better person in life.” Johnson came to Creek after serving in

Nikola Jokic is a worthy MVP, but winning meaningful games should have mattered. He didn’t get this voter’s vote because the Denver Nuggets were not a contender—through no fault of his own. * * * IT WAS ANNOUNCED last week that Nikola Jokic, the Denver Nuggets’ gifted center, won his second straight National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Award. This was expected, though not unanimously heralded. The above comments, found online, explain why. But are they valid? I, for one, don’t think so. I don’t think “most valuable player” necessarily means “the best player on the team that wins it all, or at least is in the hunt.” The MVP, to me, is that player who elevated his team to a level it could not have reached without him. Usually that describes a player whose play was integral to his team’s superiority. But there’s more to it than that. Everyone agrees that Nikola Jokic exceeded his first MVP season by every statistical measure. He became the first player in the history of the NBA—IN ITS 75-YEAR HISTORY—to score 2,000 points, grab 1,000 rebounds and have 500 assists IN THE SAME SEASON. That means he did something not even Michael, The Big O, Magic, Bird, Russell, Shaq, Jabbar, Wilt, Dr. J or dozens of other megastars ever accomplished. And most importantly, he did so on a severely wounded team that needed everything he could give it.

Jamal Murray—inarguably the Nuggets’ second-best player—has not played a minute in more than a year as he rehabs from a serious knee injury. Michael Porter Jr.—inarguably Denver’s third-best player—missed all but nine games of the season with a back injury that has dogged him since before he entered college at Missouri as the natin’s top recruit. Yet, thanks to Jokic and the efforts of a game group of guys named Barton, Green, Morris, Rivers, Cousins, Gordon, Hyland and others, the Denver Nuggets won 48 games and made the playoffs. Take a close look at the rosters of the teams still alive in the NBA playoffs and see how many of them would have even made the playoffs without their second- and third-best players. Few, if any. Without Jokic, Denver likely has a sub-.500 record. The popular alternative to Jokic was Joel Embiid, the 7-foot center of the Philadelphia 76ers who led the NBA in scoring with 30.6 points per game. Asked for his reaction to the news the Jokic had won the award over him, Embiid responded: “I don’t know what else I have to do to win it.” In addition to his 30.6 points per game, Embiid averaged 11.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists. The Sixers won 51—only three more than Denver—without losing two of their top players for the season. (They were eliminated in the same round of the playoffs as Denver.) By comparison, Jokic averaged 13.8 rebounds and 7.9

assists. They were virtually even in minutes played per game. Perhaps the best measure of Jokic’s value to his team is what’s called a triple-double—a game in which a player reaches double figures in three statistical categories. Jokic, who has the awareness and passing skill of a point guard, ranks seventh all-time in triple-doubles, thanks to the assists he piles up. This season he led the league with 19—NINETEEN—almost one-fifth of his team’s games. Embiid managed two. Jokic’s nickname is The Joker, in part because it’s close to his actual name but also because he doesn’t take himself too seriously. His interview—from his home in Serbia—on TNT’s “Inside The NBA” following the announcement of his second MVP Award, is typical. Asked for his reaction to joining Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Moses Malone as the only centers to win back-to-back NBA MVP Awards, The Joker said: “When I’m old, fat and grumpy, I’m going to tell my kids back in the day I was really good playing basketball.” More seriously, Jokic showed the humility that has made him so popular with his teammates (another factor that makes him so valuable): “I think everybody knows I’m the same guy,” he said, seated outside his horse stable, “so hopefully I’m gonna stay the same after this and just be in that company with Wilt and older guys. How To Grow New Healthy Bone! [Bone Resorption Urine Test – Safe, Effective & Radiation Free] —Continued from previous page—

Whether suffering from a bone disease, like osteoporosis, or interested in maintaining healthy bone and preventing bone diseases, this article is for you. I have successfully helped our clients reverse their bone disease processes, restore and maintain optimal bone health and prevent bone disease, utilizing Clinical Nutrition Testing and Therapy. To identify the need for new, healthy bones and to monitor our client’s progress, I use a safe, non-invasive, “radiation-free,” reproducible, and effective urine test, called Bone Resorption. The Bone Resorption Urine Test is a measurement of Collagen CrossLinked N-Telopeptide (NTx) and Creatinine. Bone resorption is the destruction of bone tissues that

promotes bone loss, which is a decrease in bone mass and bone density.

WHAT IS NTx? N-terminal telopeptide (NTx) measures the bone breakdown rate, is a bone metabolism biochemical marker, and is the most sensitive and specific indicator of bone resorption. Abnormal values indicate your risk of bone loss and fracture, as well as thinning and weakening of bones, which is medically known as osteoporosis. NTx is measured from a blood or urine sample; however,

NTx is not included in routine urinalysis. For me, and you, urine is my preference (no needles!). LOL Bone Resorption urine test values in optimal range indicate your collagen cross-linked bone fibers are still intact and you have strong, healthy bones. Whereas, abnormal test values indicate broken particles of these bone fibers are present in your urine. When bone fiber breaks down, the body removes them through urine. The further your test values are out of optimal range, the weaker and unhealthy

your bones become, and, in time, lead to any number of bone-related diseases.

WHAT IS CREATININE? The Bone Resorption Urine Test also includes testing Creatinine, the end product of creatine metabolism. Creatine is present primarily in muscle and the amount produced relates to total skeletal muscle mass, which are the muscles that connect to your bones and allow you to perform a wide range of movements. Daily Creatinine production is fairly constant except when there is a massive injury to a muscle. Blood levels and daily urinary excretion of Creatinine fluctuate very little in healthy people.

Density Test; a Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, also referred to as the DEXA or DXA Scan. However, a DEXA Scan is measuring bone density NOT bone quality. Bone Resorption urine tests both. In reviewing DEXA scan reports submitted by my clients over the past years, along with the results of their Bone Resorption urine lab report, I have observed clients who had “unfavorable” DEXA scan results and yet their Bone Resorption urine lab reports were “favorable,” i.e., within “normal” range. Thus, I conclude the porous bone observed from a DEXA scan may be caused by toxins that align and adversely affect the surface of the bone, thus making it porous and less dense; however, the toxins have not reached the cross-linked fiber within to compromise the strength and quality of the entire bone itself. Remember, the Bone

Resorption urine test measures whether the cross-link fibers within the bone, which makes it strong, are still intact, or breaking down. Thus, the benefit of Clinical Nutrition Testing and Therapy for bone health is that I am able to identify and then provide the therapeutic nutrients your body requires to 1) remove these toxins from the surface of the bone, and 2) repair and/or grow new bone tissue to restore its collagen cross-links, in the event, that your Bone Resorption urine test results are not within an optimal health range. PETITE WOMEN OFTEN FAIL THE DEXA SCAN or have lower DEXA scores. Therefore, the Bone Resorption urine test has finally provided these women with an effective test to monitor their bone health, not available before. DEATH FOLLOWS HIP FRACTURE within a year for men, according to the Mayo Clin-

path and continue dedicating time for community service.

Halley Peecher – Graduating from Arapahoe High School, Peecher and has been highly involved in high school activities and in the community. She is President of the Choir Council program at Arapahoe and has been heavily involved in three audition choirs. Additionally, she has held a part-time position as food server at Cherry Hills Assisted Living Center for two years.
