On August 21, there was a dispute between patrons at Pindustry, a 54,000-square foot bar with pizza and games at 7939 E. Arapahoe Road in Greenwood Village, that resulted in police being called. When it turned out that one of the people involved in the fracas was Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown, who was off-duty, 18th Judicial District Attorney John Kellner asked Denver D.A. Beth McCann to conduct the investigation, including review of the incident report and any other data that had been gathered by Greenwood Village police, due to Kellner’s office’s “close working relationship with Sheriff Brown and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.” On September 9, McCann announced that her office had completed its review of the episode and that “the evidence does not support criminal charges against any of the parties.” Among the six reasons she cited for her decision

were, “All parties were drinking, and their testimony is not reliable,” and, “The parties involved who could be considered victims of the sheriff’s conduct do not wish to proceed with criminal charges.” She pointedly added that, “Having concluded that criminal charges are not warranted, I want to make it clear that the behavior of Sheriff Brown in this situation was irresponsible and unprofessional for an elected sheriff.” D.A. McCann continued, “I am not in a position to take any further action with regard to this situation as my role is to

any further action to the officials and voters of Arapahoe County.” Later that day, the sheriff issued this response to McCann’s announcement, “Sheriff Brown would like to thank the Denver District Attorney’s Office for conducting an unbiased review of the incident. This was an unfortunate event that put the sheriff in the unwelcome position of having to protect and defend his wife. Sheriff Brown trusts the legal process and is looking forward to putting these events behind him.” As part of her public statement, McCann went out of her way to give special credit to the “the thorough, professional and unbiased investigation conducted by the men and women of Greenwood Village Police Department regarding this incident,” adding, “The officers and detectives who handled this investigation pursued all avenues to determine what happened and (GVPD) Chief Dustin Varney and his team did outstanding work.” fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

The way we were before September changed it all “Turn on your television ... a plane just hit the World Trade Center in New York.” I can’t even imagine how many times those words were uttered twenty years ago, but like nearly everyone of age at the time, I can tell you exactly where I was the moment I learned. And I know almost every moment of that day and the mournful, hollow, existential days that followed. The approach and passing of September 11, 2021 brought much discussion and contemplation of that fateful day two decades past. But what about the “carefree” summer months leading up to that horrific moment? Who were we before the towers fell? This past weekend in the Washington Post, Dan Zak and Ellen McCarthy put together a powerful piece of reflection that is both beautifully written and hauntingly thoughtful in its look back twenty years plus to the Summer of 2001, “The Summer Before 9/11.” Zak and McCarthy remind us how those summer days were “Freewheeling. Foreboding. Then came the Fall.” And as I read their retrospective piece, I thought deeply about the way we were, how it was, what it’s like now, and where we go next. During the summer of 2001, Shrek and the Fast and the Furious premiered at the box office, and both films would go on to become huge film franchises. Many of us probably spent a fair amount of time in cool movie theaters because June and July were real scorchers across much of the country. Songs like Train’s “Drops of Jupiter” and “Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child were playing on the radio because at that time there was no Pandora, no Spotify, and no YouTube to stream the music. However, music lovers would soon be able to listen to those songs and others on their new iPods, which premiered just a few weeks after the world fell apart. If you were at the beach that summer, you might have been reading Jonathan Franzen’s huge bestseller, The Corrections. Later in the year, you’d spend time talking about the Oprah controversy when Franzen dissed her book club. Other popular reads were Richard Russo’s Empire Falls and David McCullough’s John Adams, though you might not have taken them to the beach after Time Magazine declared 2001 “The summer of the Shark.” In the news we read about the tech bubble bursting and how, despite a trillion dollar tax cut, the economy was mostly treading water that summer.

In the summer of 2001, I was teaching high school English in southern Illinois, just outside St. Louis, while finishing up my master’s degree in English Language and

Literature. I was beginning to think about Ph.D programs, as I spent a fair amount of time researching and writing in the air conditioned graduate library of Washington University, St. Louis. My wife, also a teacher, was pregnant with

our first child; our son would be born six months after the planes hit the towers. I know now how we wondered what kind of world our children would inherit. In many ways September 11, 2001, is a pivotal event. However, in the aftermath of twenty years, it’s clear the date also became an entire era, the post-9/11 world. And if that is accurate, then it’s worth considering what the previous era was. Was it just one day or is it an entire mindset? Did the moment change the world? If so, then what was it like before? What did we lose and also what did we gain? And what has changed that doesn’t fit smoothly into the gain-loss columns. While the country did not feel quite as divisive

then as it does now, we were in the early days of the most contested presidency in a hundred years. And to be perfectly honest, the caustic divisive partisanship had been stewing since at least 1994. So, all was not necessarily well and good in the days before the fall of the towers. But then again, it never really is. In a beautiful remembrance at the Flight 93 memorial last weekend, former President George W Bush noted, as so many have, how that fateful September morning twenty years ago changed everyone forever. That is undoubtedly true, and with that in mind, it’s important to note specifically who we were and how we changed. Michael P. American strength and stamina The nation has been grieving the past few days over the massive loss of life and stature when the New York trade towers were destroyed killing and injuring thousands of Americans. The incident has left scars and motivated America to seek revenge that has not turned out well on foreign soil. Our troops have come home at last, let’s keep them here as long as possible. I fear for Taiwan with China’s growing grasp of world power. America needs to heal from COVID wounds, find homes for the homeless, secure our streets with law and order and protect our borders. Free enterprise and American ingenuity will take care of the economy if business is allowed the freedom to prosper, invent,

The natives are restless with a record-breaking 15 candidates running for office in Greenwood Village. Spirited races are ongoing in Aurora, Littleton and Centennial. Stephanie Piko, the hard-working mayor of Centennial gets a pass this election with no opposition. She deserves a second term of office. There are scheduled forums for candidate debates emerging so watch for the time and place in the various cities. Interest in the Cherry Creek School district election has also blossomed with contested seats. Election for city, school, and higher offices will be Nov. 2, 2021. *** What about those Broncos clobbering the Giants 27-13? I had a feeling that the team was starting to come together, and our new quarterback was outstanding. What a fun game and victory!

and improvise. Many now work at home, but no matter where one works, America has always been a land of the ambitious immigrants willing to work, to invent, to build railroads, mine gold and farm the rich fertile soil of America’s farmland. With a strong belief in God and manifest destiny of being a place for everyone to live in freedom, raise families, be safe, and love our neighbors as ourselves this land will survive. Election season is upon us and we compliment all candidates for being willing to serve with different viewpoints and concepts. America has always been a melting pot of different religions, races, color and dogmas. Through all we still remain the great experiment in history.

The Bronco defense is really tough and with great players. *** Last Saturday night my family were guests of my daughter Sharon and her husband Jerry Barbillion at the 16th Annual TAPS “Celebrity Classic’” benefitting tragedy assistance programs for survivors of military service member deaths. The event is chaired every year by Bo and Lynne Cottrell and this year was another outstanding success. The salute to our fallen heroes was held on 9/11 at the Grove ranch at Orchard and Parker road in the indoor riding arena. Over 500 attendees dined on prime rib donated by the Coors Cowboy Club Chuckwagon crew who travel all the way from Amarillo Texas to prepare and serve this old west authentic prime rib dinner. There was Pete Coors himself dishing up plates of prime rib and all the trimmings. One of Colorado’s finest gentlemen. Coors has become a world-wide famous beverage. Another hero of this event is

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. *** The above is very noble and something for all of us to strive to attain in this challenging time in our history.

We should not attempt to rewrite history but to learn from it and attempt to follow John F. Kennedy’s famous statement about service to country rather than self. Service clubs are meeting once again, and while membership in many organizations are declining, these groups of men and women bring out the best in service to others. They have been performing for TAPS for 15 years and offering themselves at auction for private parties with proceeds going to TAPS. The Tony David Volunteers Award went to George Dempsey and Riok Wright for services performed for TAPS. Congratulations! It was a great evening with the Nashville celebrities performing with the singing and music from Andy Griggs, Deborah Allen, Frank Myers and Jimmy Nichols. TAPS founder Bonnie Carroll, who lost her husband in a plane crash, gave an impassioned speech about all of the assistance given by TAPS, especially to the children of the fallen warriors. The audience was very generous, and thousands of dollars flowed in donations, silent auction items, and spirited bidding for prizes. Shelly St. John was the “Auction Diva” who spearheaded the live auction to amazing success from a very

appreciative audience. Maura Spence, Miss Colorado, an active military service member stationed at Fort Carson served as emcee. She will compete in the Miss America Pageant later this year. There are many people to thank from donors, sponsors, and board members. Mission accomplished, and hero families remembered. *** Attended a Masonic pancake breakfast in Nevadaville, that’s a ghost mining town that still has an active Masonic lodge, one of three lodges in Gilpin County with two others, one in Central City and another in Black Hawk. There have been 14 American presidents who have been members of the Masonic Lodge. All of these Colorado lodges started in the early 1860s, among the oldest in Colorado. At one time over 1000 miners and families lived in Nevadaville mining gold adjacent to Central City, “The richest square mile on earth.” ***

Fourth generation Denverite starts #NailOvarianCancer Awareness Campaign after losing mother and cousin to the disease September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Even among rooted, fourth generation Denver families, the Blue-McClintock family stands out for its closeness. Lindsey (Blue) McClintock’s father and grandmother both graduated from South High School, and McClintock and her husband, Matt, decided to purchase a home in the same Cherry Creek neighborhood in which she grew up. Both McClintock and her brother work with their spouses along with their dad at the family business, Blue Family Development. That is why the loss of her mother as well as her husband’s cousin, within seven months of each other, to ovarian cancer struck McClintock particularly hard. While ovarian cancer is the

deadliest of all gynecologic cancers, it is relatively rare accounting for only 28% of gynecologic cancers. Because there is no screening test and the symptoms are subtle, most cases are diagnosed at a late stage when the chance of long-term survival decreases. McClintock’s mother, Sandy, was originally referred to a kidney specialist when she experienced lower back pain. Then, when she lost her appetite and had persistent nausea, doctors tested her for a variety of gastrointestinal problems. It was two months before McClintock’s mother was finally diagnosed with Stage 3C ovarian cancer. Sandy bravely underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, and brief periods of remission before ultimately succumbing to her cancer after a two-year

Civic Center Park going the way of Afghanistan While the Biden Administration has surrendered Afghanistan to the Taliban, Denver has similarly surrendered Civic Center Park to drugs, rats, and the homeless, now forced to admit defeat and close the park. City officials announced recently that the park, “Will shut down for the foreseeable future due to crime and other safety risks to public health” according to The Denver Channel. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has observed the gradual but steady decline of Denver. Homelessness and crime are on the rise, along with the downstream problems of drug use, trash, human waste, and rodent infestations. Even if local residents are not aware, New Yorkers, 2000 miles away have taken notice. The New York Post reported on Civic Center Park, observing that “It has devolved into a haven for drug users, crime and human waste.” New York City has its own share of such parks. The park didn’t turn sour

overnight. Over a year ago the park was trashed during the George Floyd riots and although the riots eventually stopped, the decay did not. Where have the Mayor and other city officials BY BRIAN C. been? A doctor watchJOONDEPH ing a patient progress from a cough, to a fever, to sepsis, to a ventilator, then finally deciding to do something, is not a good doctor. Rather than dealing with problems years ago when they were small, officials talked much but did little. When John Hickenlooper was still Mayor, he implemented a plan to end homelessness in 10 years called “Denver’s Road Home.”. That was in 2007. 14 years later, Hickenlooper’s road has led to the Governor’s mansion then the US Senate, but for Denver there was no road home, only a road to more homelessness. Hickenlooper’s DRH budget was more than $40 million and the plan “operated without a clear, updated mission or purpose” according to Denver‘s City Auditor in 2015. This

battle. Emily McClintock Addlesperger, Matt’s cousin, passed away only a week after her diagnosis. She was just 44 years old. The loss of two close family members prompted McClintock to become better educated about ovarian cancer. “I was shocked to learn the Pap Smear only tests for cervical cancer—not ovarian or uterine cancer,” reported McClintock. “I soon realized how little education there is for women on cancers that only affect us.” She had genetic testing and preventative gynecologic surgery to reduce her own chances of developing ovarian cancer. However, she also wanted to raise awareness and spark conversations among women about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Last year, in collaboration with members of the Gynecologic Oncology program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Colorado Ovarian

sounds much like President Biden’s disastrous Afghan withdrawal plan. As Denver closes and cleans up the park, the homeless will simply be relocated to another park or neighborhood, which will become the next rat and drug paraphernalia haven to be cleaned up in the future. What about some attention to the underlying problem of homelessness in Denver? Programs like Step Denver, emphasizing sobriety, work, accountability, and community seem a more sensible approach rather than simply rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking Titanic. Under Denver’s present leadership, the Mile High City is becoming the Mile High Mess, a city trying to decide which direction it wants to head. Is Denver becoming Chicago, a dangerous city with dozens of shootings every weekend? Or is Denver going in the direction of San Francisco, sidewalks filled with the homeless and human waste? Denver residents are seeing the leadership they voted for. The ballot box is one way to reverse course before the city becomes another American urban blight.

the desires, drive and the will to face this enemy down and avenge the deaths of those almost 3,000 people slain that day. Of those that died on Sept 11 2001, 111 people called Colorado home. In the subsequent years another 116 Colorado residents would perish defending America’s Freedom; those are the heroes that pledged to NOT sleep peacefully, battle all hours, put us first, sacrifice time raising their kids, and risk injury and death for us. Did we accomplish our goals; do we feel better yet? I feel that this is one of those scenarios where you don’t ever win, feel good or vindicated…the victims of the Sept 11th crisis will never return, and those noble warriors that gave their lives trying to stop, and eradicate terror from happening again on our soil will never come home. But we can keep saying their names… we can force ourselves to talk about that day, we can take the time to educate ourselves and our children on international politics, we can speak up, we can vote, we support veterans and families of the fallen, we can memorialize these heroes and show respect by

frequenting the memorial grounds and cemeteries, we can thank war survivors/service members for their service and we can financially donate to any of the above. These soldiers were and are willing to give their lives for the greater good of our country through life, limb, and mental capacity. “Never forget” is a duty and obligation as an American for being recipients of their sacrifices.

The Colorado Freedom Memorial is located at Springhill Community Park 756 Telluride St Aurora, CO 80011

On Sept 11 2021, as every year, they host a Memorial Service to recognize the 111 and 116 fallen Coloradoans. This year Mayor Piko of Aurora lead the service with a name reading in conjunction with a rose placement to each person, a ringing of the Freedom Bell, The Pledge, the National Anthem, a few prayers and messages of reflection and was closed with the singing of God Bless America. At this service there was also a piece of the tower 1 on display that will be used to educate children in our schools for the next year. Representative Jason Crow

(veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan) also spoke and shared a story from his previous day. He had just arrived from Washington DC after meeting 9,000 newly arrived refugees from Afghanistan, many of them young children. He shared a story of a little boy with broken English who noticed a lanyard on the neck of a soldier. The lanyard had a flag of Afghanistan. On the soldiers shoulder there was a flag of America. The boy with wide eyes said, “Afghanistan Flag”… and then pointed at the American Flag and said, “American Flag.” He said then, “I am American.” The Colorado Freedom Memorial is updated regularly to recognize the names of every single fallen soldier from Colorado (over 6,000 killed or MIA) since 1898 during the Spanish-American war to current. The next event is on November 10-12 where 6280 glass jars will be lit each evening from 5-8 pm to commemorate the fallen and to help us to never forget. Aurora will elect five city council members in November

The City of Aurora has ten members on its city council plus the mayor, who is elected directly and only votes to make or break a tie. The council consists of one elected member from each of six council districts plus four members elected at-large. All city council terms are four years long and are staggered. This year, city council districts one, two and three plus two of the four at-large positions will be filled by election. In 2023, council districts four, five and six will be up for election along with the other two at-large positions. In Ward 1, Crystal Murillo, the only incumbent running for city council, is being challenged in her bid for re-election by Bill Gondrez and Scott Liva. In Ward 2, there is an open seat that is being contested by Jessica Giammalvo, Robert Hamilton III, Bryan Lindstrom, and Steve Sundberg. After Nicole Johnston, elected in 2019, resigned her position as Ward 2 representative in June to move to Colorado Springs, the remaining council members tried to agree on someone to fill her position over multiple meetings but were not successful, so it will remain vacant until one of these four candidates is elected on November 2. Ward 3 is presently served by Councilmember Marsha Berzins, who is term-limited and cannot run for re-election. There are two contestants for the position, Ruben L. Medina and Jono Scott. The two at-large positions up for election this year are presently held by Councilmembers Allison Hiltz and Dave Gruber, first elected in 2017. Both are eligible for re-election but have declined to run again. There are six people vying for the two at-large positions left open by Gruber and Hiltz’ decision to not seek re-election. They are Candice Bailey, Hanna Bogale, Becky Hogan, Danielle Jurinsky, John Ronquillo, and Dustin Zvonek. The two top vote-getters in the citywide election will fill the vacant positions.

Littleton will elect its first mayor ever

Candidates for Littleton’s first-ever popular vote mayoral election on November 2 are Jon Buck, Carol Fey, and Kyle Schlachter. Buck has been the CEO of HopeCycle, a non-profit organization that distributes refurbished bikes to underprivileged, abused or neglected

children, since 2017. Fey is a technical trainer and writer who is completing a four-year term as city councilmember for Littleton District 3. Schlachter is the outreach coordinator for the Colorado Wine Industry Development Board at the Colorado Department of Agriculture and served on the Littleton City Council from 2017 to 2019 atlarge. The mayor of Littleton was always chosen by and from among its seven elected city council members. In 2020, a referendum was approved by the city’s voters to have the mayor elected directly. The elected mayor will preside over city council meetings, but unlike mayors in many other nearby cities, will also have a vote on issues and questions that come before the council. The mayor will serve a fouryear term. Also up for election in November are the seats representing District one, District three, and the at-large position. In District one, incumbent Patrick Driscoll, a mortgage executive, is seeking re-election. He is being challenged by Candice Ferguson, a marketing professional. In District three, there is no incumbent because Fey is running for mayor. Challenging for the position are Stephen Barr, an environmental engineer, and Paul Bingham, also an engineeer. There are two candidates for the at-large position, both running for council for the first time, Krista Kafer, who writes an opinion column in The Denver Post, and Gretchen Rydin, a social worker and therapist. Also on the ballot in Littleton will be a ballot measure to raise the city sales tax from 3.00 percent to 3.75 percent, which will result in a total sales tax, including state and county tax, of 8.00 percent. The additional 0.75 percent, which was unanimously approved by the city council on August 26, is expected to raise $9.8 million annually and will be dedicated to infrastructure maintenance and capital expenditures.

Englewood will have two contested elections this year

This year, there are four open seats on the seven-member Englewood city council that consists of four district representatives and three who are elected at-large. All regular terms are for four years and they are staggered so that half of the council runs every two years. This year, the positions that are up for election are a representative from district two, a representative from district four, one regular at-large position, and one at-large position for only two

years because it is the remainder of the four-year at-large term to which John Stone was elected in November 2019. He resigned in March after some public statements he had made surfaced. He called them, “anarcho-socialist.” Others called them, “communist,” and he didn’t disagree with that characterization. Regardless, many Englewood residents found them alarming and unacceptable which led to his resignation. The two contested seats this year are the remaining two years in the at-large position vacated by Stone, in which Mary Colecchi and Jim Woodward are running, and the district four representative position. In that race, the candidates are Belinda Porter and Steven Ward. Ward has been sitting on the council since March, when he was appointed to the at-large seat that Stone vacated. (That, however, is not the seat for which he is running—he’s running for district four. It’s confusing.) The two positions that are on the ballot but uncontested are the at-large position presently held by Cheryl Wink, elected in 2017, who has no competition, and the district two seat, where Chelsea Nunnenkamp is the only candidate. The current holder of the district two seat is Mayor Linda Olson, who is term-limited. The only other race on the ballot is for the presiding municipal judge. That position, currently held by Joe Jefferson, is also uncontested, so he will be elected to another four-year term. In Englewood, the mayor and mayor pro tem are chosen by the elected city council from among its members. There is no direct election for either position.

Littleton Public Schools Board of Education will elect three new members

The Board of Education of Littleton Public Schools consists of five members, all elected at-large for up to two four-year terms. Three of the five positions will be on the November 2 ballot. Current board members Kelly Perez, board vice-president, and Jack Reutzel, secretary, are term-limited and unable to run for re-election. Board member Angela Christensen was appointed in March to fill the remainder of the term of Carrie Warren-Gully, who was elected Arapahoe County Commissioner. In addition to Christensen, who is running for election for a full four-year term, on the ballot are Joan Anderssen, Dale Elliott, Andrew Graham and Jon Lisec. The top three vote-getters from the group of five people will be elected to the school board for a four-year term.

Five positions are up for election in Centennial

The Centennial City Council consists of nine positions, two each from four city council districts, plus the mayor. All are elected for four-year staggered terms, with one position from each council district up every two years so that councilmembers from a district must run individually, they cannot run as a team. The mayor, elected directly, also holds a four-year term. On November 2, Mayor Stephanie Piko will run uncontested for a second and final four-year term. Also running uncontested for a second and final term are District Two City Councilmember Tammy Maurer and District Three City Councilmember Mike Sutherland. In Centennial District One, Councilmember Kathy Turley is term-limited and cannot run for re-election. Vying to replace her are Robyn Carnes and Fernando Branch. In Centennial District Four, incumbent Marlo Alston is being challenged in her bid for a second term by Neal Davidson.

Six candidates are running for two seats on the Cherry Creek School Board The Cherry Creek School District Board of Education is divided into five Director Districts that each represent a separate geographical area

of the school district. Terms of office are four years and elections are staggered. This November, Director Districts D and E are on the ballot. In 2023, Director Districts A, B and C will be up for election. There are three candidates from each of the two director districts on the ballot. In Director District D, Kelly Bates, running for re-election to a second and final term, is being challenged by Jennifer Gibbons and Schumé Navarro. District E is currently represented by Karen Fisher, president of the school board. She is term-limited and cannot run again. Running to replace her are Kristin Allan, Bill Leach, and Jason Lester. The Cherry Creek school district is holding six candidate forums to give parents, staff and community members the opportunity to get to know the candidates running for the two open seats on the CSSD Board of Education. The first forum was held on Tuesday, September 14 at Overland High School. The remaining five events will be held at: • Eaglecrest High School auditorium September 21, 2021 6:30 p.m. • Cherry Creek High School auditorium September 22, 2021 6:30 p.m. • Grandview High School auditorium September 28, 2021 6:30 p.m. • Smoky Hill High School auditorium September 30, 2021 6:30 p.m. • Cherokee Trail High School auditorium October 7, 2021 6:30 p.m.

Greenwood Village City Council Libby Barnacle for reelection to GV District 3

Anne Ingebretsen for re- Donna Johnston for re- Dave Kerber for reelection to GV District 2 election to GV District 3 election in GV District 2

“Libby Barnacle is a 4th generation Coloradan and a product of the Cherry Creek School District, attending Belleview Elementary, Campus Middle and Cherry Creek High School. Libby attended Boston College and the University of Colorado, graduating Cum Laude. She received her law degree from the University of Denver. Libby is a former Deputy District Attorney for the 17th and 18th Judicial Districts as well as Guardian Ad Litem for Dependent and Neglected children for Arapahoe County. She and her husband, Colin, also an attorney, have lived in Greenwood Village since 2003. They have two girls, Louise and Emmy, who attend Cherry Creek High School and Campus Middle School, respectively, as well as two Australian Shepherds, Petunia and Begonia. In addition to supporting her girls in school and their host of extracurricular activities, Libby also champions the efforts of Tall Tales Ranch, a Colorado nonprofit building an inclusive community for young adults with special needs. She can frequently be found on the indoor clay tennis courts at Club Greenwood! Libby served four years on the Greenwood Village Planning & Zoning Commission and has served one term on City Council. She is a member of the Infrastructure Committee, which is most recently exploring broadband internet service to the City. Libby also authored and sponsored a new section to the Village’s Traffic Code, giving our Municipal Judge the ability to abate the use of a vehicle for street racing and eluding the police by confiscating it for up to one year. She and fellow District 3 Councilmember Donna Johnston, a former Board of Adjustments and Appeals Commissioner, have a combined 12 years of service to Greenwood Village. They have proven to be experienced and effective leaders in protecting and preserving our community and ask for your continued support and vote. Libby is endorsed by Arapahoe County Commissioner and former Mayor Nancy Sharpe, former Mayor Ron Rakowsky, and current Mayor George Lantz. Please visit www.libbybarnacleforgvcitycouncil.com for more information.”

Current Greenwood Village Council Member, Anne Ingebretsen, has announced her candidacy for reelection in District 2 to serve a third term. Ingebretsen served on the City Council previously, 1999-2007. She was re-elected to the Council 10 years later after the Save our Village Referendum. When asked about her last term, Ingebretsen thought her biggest contribution was helping to position the financial future of the Village. “When former Mayor, Ron Rakowsky asked me to Chair the Revenue Committee, he asked me and other committee members to find new areas to grow our tax base. The Council designed the Arapahoe Entertainment District (AED) to do just that and to take advantage of its proximity to Light Rail and Fiddlers Green Amphitheater. We worked with landowners in the AED to redevelop a strategically located area that has both infrastructure and the potential to be a significant revenue and entertainment venue.” Additionally, Ingebretsen was actively involved in the Belleview median project. “We partnered with the Botanic Gardens to install median landscaping between University and Quebec. The look of the roadway has been improved and we did it in an environmentally sensitive way by xeriscaping. The Botanic Gardens hopes to replicate the project in other parts of the metro area.” In a third term, Ingebretsen intends to focus on Village finances, keeping the community safe from rising crime, and planning for life after Covid. “I am grateful to the residents of Greenwood Village who have given me an opportunity to serve on the Council. I hope to earn their support again.” Ingebretsen is endorsed by current Mayor, George Lantz, and former Mayors, Ron Rakowsky and Nancy Sharpe. Anne is a graduate of Denver University where she was honored as the Outstanding Scholar/Athlete of her class. She obtained her MBA in Finance and was employed by IBM for 10 years. She and her husband, Kirk, have lived in Greenwood Village for 28 years where they’ve raised their three daughters.

“I support the Greenwood Village Police Department who keep us safe. I have worked to ensure our parks are pristine and we have dedicated reserve funds to purchase more open space. I believe in sound fiscal policies that ensure Greenwood Village remains debt free and support economic development that allows residents to enjoy high quality City services and amenities.” Donna is a member of the Greenwood Village Revenue Committee that created the Arapahoe Entertainment District which is attracting new businesses such as Pindustry and soon, Shake Shack and Grange Hall. She is Greenwood Village’s liaison to the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, and helped businesses stay in business during the pandemic. During her tenure on Council, safety measures were approved including adding speed humps in Sundance Hills and increasing penalties for street car racing. A study is underway to improve safe multi-modal traffic around Cherry Creek High School and she will continue to seek ways to make Greenwood Village more walkable and bikeable. Council has also updated the Village’s lighting code for energy-saving LED and is establishing guidelines to make it easier for residents to use solar to power their homes, among other things. A member of Greenwood Village City Council for the past 2 years, Donna previously served on the Board of Adjustments and Appeals and the Sundance Hills HOA for multiple years. She was a committee member and advocate for “Save our Village,” and believes in thoughtful development that preserves Greenwood Village’s quality of life. Donna’s endorsements include Mayor George Lantz, and former mayor Ron Rakowsky. She asks District 3 residents to vote to reelect her as well as Libby Barnacle since they work well together representing residents. For more information, visit reelectdonnajohnston.com.

Greenwood Village Council Member, Dave Kerber, announced his candidacy for reelection in District 2. Having served previously, Dave returned to the Council in 2017 in the wake of the Save Our Village referendum in June 2017. When asked of his accomplishments, Kerber stated. “In June 2017, the people overwhelmingly expressed their desire to oppose urban density and to preserve Greenwood Village as the suburban, open space, parklike community that lead them to live and stay in the Village. During the last four years, facing the challenges of COVID and the defund the police movement, we have worked hard to put into action that vision of our citizens to preserve and protect our Village that our neighbors have chosen as their home and place to raise their families.” The main challenges for the future continue to be navigating the after-effects of the pandemic to keep our Village on track to provide the culture, services and safety that we have always enjoyed while ensuring the continued financial viability of the Village into the future. “As a Council Member, you can’t just focus on one issue. We have to constantly make good decisions on a wide variety of issues to maintain our roads and parks, foster capital improvements, and adopt policies to provide a good working environment for our staff during these times of labor shortages, all the while wisely spending the financial resources that our citizens have entrusted us with. Dave Kerber is an Air Force Academy and Duke Law graduate and has earned a Masters of Law degree in Labor Law from George Washington University. He is currently a small business owner. Dave and his wife, Sheila, have lived in Greenwood Village for 26 years having raised their 3 daughters, Rachel, Laura and Katherine.

Meet the candidates Jeff Reiman for GV City Mathew Schulz for GV Tom Stahl for GV City Council District 4 City Council District 1 Council District 4 I’ve been quite fortunate. My parents didn’t attend college, but they taught me the value of education. I got a scholarship to a state university, then graduated from Harvard Law and practiced law in Denver for 25 years. When my kids became teenagers, I loved talking with them about national and global events so much that I became a high school Social Studies teacher. I taught for 19 years at Grandview High School and retired last year. Now, I want to use these skills and experiences to serve the broader public. I’ve never run for public office, but my background has prepared me well. As a lawyer, I served on the state Ethics Committee and was recognized for my pro bono work, which included school finance reform, constitutional litigation, and juvenile court representation. As a teacher, I won local, statewide, and national awards, including being named both Colorado and National Social Studies Teacher of the Year.   My wife Joyce and I moved to Greenwood Village in 1994 to enjoy our wonderful parks & trails, local businesses, and world-class schools. We raised three kids and now entertain our grandkids here. Greenwood Village is a terrific place, but there’s room for improvement. Let’s look ahead by:      making the Village more sustainable through solar energy on city buildings and an electric fleet; developing a composting program to reduce carbon emissions and needless waste; ensuring that our police force is better paid, highly trained, and fully accountable. I believe that government should make decisions based on science, fact, and reason, be inclusive and welcoming, treat all its residents equally, encourage respectful differences of opinion, and value open communication. If you have an idea how to move our city forward, please contact me via www.jeffreiman.com. I welcome all feedback and want to hear from you.

From Mathew’s early years, he was brought up with a sense of community and a sense of service. He was raised in a small farming community, St. Peter, MN. His sense of service, learned from both of his working-class parents (a teacher and factory worker), motivated him to enlist in the Navy straight out of high school. From that point on, Mathew has been called to serve in one way, shape or form. When Mathew moved to this community, he did so to bring his family to a community that was more family friendly with kids playing in the driveways and cul-de-sacs, with local parks and pools. He was fortunate that this move brought him and his wife closer to their professional careers in the Denver Tech Center and Downtown. While they found an incredible sense of community, they quickly found that there was a disconnect between residents and their community leaders. Our City Council affects so much of our daily lives, and it is imperative that they are accessible and responsive to us, the voters. Mathew believes in a responsive and representative government - a City Council that listens to its constituents and makes decisions with those constituents’ voices in mind. If elected, Mathew will work to ensure that all Greenwood Village residents have an opportunity to share their vision for our community, and have the power to help build a village they can be proud of. Mathew›s priorities include: responsible policing while also supporting our men and women in blue and our first responders; subtle, yet inclusionary development; and a move toward environmental sustainability while respecting the character and charm of our village. Tom Stahl and his wife Susan, moved to the Cherry Creek Village on the Lake (CCVOTL) neighborhood in Greenwood Village 25 years ago. Their two children, Bradford and Grace attended Belleview Elementary, Campus Middle and Cherry Creek High School. Susan is a retired Adams County District #1 high school teacher and counselor and past secretary of the Cherry Creek High School PTCO. Tom has enjoyed a 42-year career as an industrial real estate broker and has spent the past 34 years with Colliers International where he is a principal in the firm. Tom began his community involvement as a multi-year board member and treasurer of CCVOTL. He has spent a great deal of time over the better part of the past decade at Greenwood Village City Hall. In 2012, Tom was appointed to the Greenwood Village Board of Adjustments and Appeals where he served for six years including a year as Vice Chairman and another year as Chairman. Tom is currently on the Greenwood Village Planning and Zoning Commission, appointed by current District 4 Council Representatives, Judith Hilton and Tom Dougherty. Tom was inspired to run for City Council when Tom Dougherty announced that he decided not to seek reelection on City Council in District 4. Tom and Tom Dougherty worked closely together for numerous years on the Board of Adjustment and Appeals. Mr. Stahl was also inspired to run, based on Tom’s past and current service to the village by Judith Hilton, who is running for reelection on City Council in District 4. The primary issues that Tom feels strongly about are public safety, fiscal responsibility, providing the highest level of village services available, promoting smart development and helping businesses succeed in the very difficult COVID environment. If elected to City Council, issues that Tom looks forward to addressing include traffic, environmental sustainability and Greenwood Village employee recruitment and retention.

Finally, Bob Gebhard gets well-deserved recognition Serious fans of the Colorado Rockies will have the opportunity to salute one of the team’s biggest stars—and its most overlooked—in a couple weeks. On September 29 Bob Gebhard finally will be inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. Combining tireless effort, shrewd baseball judgment and personal relationships built on trust, he fashioned from scratch a team that turned heads by succeeding faster than any before it. It was assumed the expansion Rockies would lose more than a hundred games in their first season, 1993; they lost 95. It also was assumed

that it would be years before they’d be competitive; they were in the post-season two years later. “I would argue that was the best team in Rockies history,” Dante Bichette said in a recent interview, “simply because of the bullpen and Bombers. I think it was the best bullpen they’ve ever had.” (Geb stocked that, too, wisely choosing Darren Holmes, Steve Reed, Bruce Ruffin and Curtis Leskanic in the expansion draft, and signing Mike Munoz as a free agent early in the Rockies’ first season.) The formal ceremony at the Hall of Fame Dinner at the Denver Hilton downtown comes a year after Geb’s selection—delayed when the 2020 induction was canceled because of the Covid pandemic. Beyond that, the recognition itself is long overdue. Geb and his wife Nancy never left Colorado, even though his time with the Rockies ended late in the 1999 season. He worked the next 20 seasons in the front offices of the Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals before retiring late last year to conclude 56 years in professional baseball. “Ever since we got here, we’ve thought of Colorado as home and knew we would stay here,” he says on the CSHOF website. “We just love it here, and all three of our children and our eight grandchildren are 10 minutes from our house (in Heritage Greens, now part of the south suburb of Centennial).” The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1965 and currently has 264

honorees. Among them are Andres Galarraga, Dante Bichette, Vinny Castilla, Larry Walker and their manager, the late Don Baylor—all of whom Gebhard brought to Colorado. How each of those Hall of Fame players and Baylor came to the Rockies explains why Gebhard himself belongs in the CSHOF with them.

First general manager of the Rockies Bob Gebhard

Accurately judging Baylor’s leadership ability and the value of his demeanor in turning a group of players who didn’t even know each other into a cohesive team, Gebhard made the man called “Groove” the Rockies first manager—even though Baylor had never managed before at any level. (In his third season, Baylor was named National League manager of the year.) Agent Jim Bronner, who respected Geb despite the predictably contentious relationship they had across the bargaining table, called and offered The Big Cat a few days before the expansion draft. Faced with limited resources, Gebhard nonetheless found a way. (Galarraga won the NL batting title in the Rockies’ first season, was a

two-time all-star, and in five years batted .316 with 172 homers and 579 runs batted in, and.) Sal Bando, general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers at the time, trusted Geb enough to agree to trade Dante Bichette for Kevin Reimer, even before Gebhard had selected Reimer from the Texas Rangers when the Rockies and Marlins chose players from the dispersal pool. (Bichette became a Rockies star, hitting 201 homers, driving in 826 runs, matching Galarrga with a .316 average over seven seasons, and making four All-Star Game appearances. Reimer was in Japan two years later.) Relying on his own judgment, Geb overruled others who wanted him to choose a more experienced player, instead picking Castillafrom the Atlanta Braves with Colorado’s seventh choice in the second round. (Then a shortstop, Vinny moved to third base and became one of the Rockies’ most popular players of all time, and arguably the greatest Mexican-born position player ever, second only to lefthander Fernando Valenzuela. Vinny hit 239 home runs in nine seasons with Colorado.) And, drawing on his knowledge of now-defunct Montreal’s dire financial condition coming out of the 1994-95 players strike, he within hours of the end of the walkout signed Larry Walker, who had not been offered a contract by the Expos. Walker, the NL Most Valuable Player in 1997, batted .338 in a decade with the Rockies and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last week. (As Walker was signing with the Rockies, Gebhard also snapped up free agent pitcher Bill Swift after a dinner meeting with Swift and his wife.) All of those players were instrumental in the historic 1995 season, when the Rockies shocked baseball—and briefly transcended the Broncos—by making the post-season with a victory over the San Francisco Giants in the regular season’s last game. There are many other distinctions—a remarkably productive initial amateur draft in 1992, record attendance, and numerous innovations as Coors Field was being built— that could be detailed. But you get the idea. Induction into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame is fitting recognition. BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

n September 11 and 12, the Curtis Center for the Arts hosted Art on the Green at Curtis Park at 2323 E. Orchard Road in Greenwood Village. This event was inaugurated in 2020 as a “safely curated, all Colorado art fair” in response to health concerns as-

sociated with the COVID-19 pandemic. It was so well received by the community that it was brought back again this year and expanded to two full days. The number of artists who had booths in individual tents grew from 50 to 80. Live music was provided by local artists, including Tori Rognerud, Mitchell Galligan, Grace Galligan and Annabelle Link to enhance the mood. Water and hand sanitizing stations were available in multiple locations. There were even food

trucks. For this event, the Curtis Center partnered with the Women of Steele Studio Tour that features six studios and over 10 visual artists, primarily in the area of South Steele Street in Greenwood Village. Artists participating in this year’s Art on the Green offered work including painting in oils, acrylics, and watercolors, plus sculpture, jewelry, photography, printmaking, ceramics, glass, and mixed media. Chris Stevens, Greenwood Village cultural arts manager,

and his team, including parks staff and seasonal recreation aides, produced the show and handled all the logistics. They were especially challenged when a microburst came through the park on Saturday night doing major damage to 16 booths. In addition to rushing in to clean up the grounds, the city loaned tents to many of the artists so that they could display their work on Sunday. Only two artists were unable to return.

Although final numbers were not in as of this writing, the event was deemed a huge success with 4,000 people attending and most of the artists reporting robust sales. Said Stevens, “It is very likely Art on the Green will return next year.” The Curtis Center is enriched by grants and receives funding from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District.

Celebrate, inspire, and connect art and culture in Centennial We are excited to announce the formation of the Centennial Arts and Cultural Foundation! It is our mission to celebrate, inspire, and connect art and culture in Centennial. CACF is actively engaging and exploring opportunities for art placements in Centennial. This includes community events, working with our arts community, and researching how best to commemorate the rich history of our city and our region. In 2019, Centennial’s City Council supported the idea of exploring how best to support and celebrate the arts in Centennial. In the fall of 2019, Centennial City Council convened a committee of community members to review how other municipalities supported arts and culture within their communities. They weighed the pros

and cons of engaging as a city organized commission or to form an independent non-profit in order to partner with the community. The committee of community members supported the idea of the creation of a non-profit foundation, run independent of the city and supported by community businesses and citizens. This committee also created the initial outline of the by-laws, a mission statement and the name: The Centennial Arts and Cultural Foundation. Today, the Centennial Arts and Cultural Foundation has been established as a non-profit organization and is launching its initial fundraising and awareness campaign! ART ROCKS Donating to this campaign will: • Help launch a sustainable foundation • Bring art to public and common spaces • Promote events that highlight arts and culture within the community Stephanie Piko, Tammy Maurer and Kathy Turley are leading the initial

efforts as the directors of CACF and will be working to expand the Board of Directors by the end of 2021. Ovarian Cancer Alliance Continued from page 5

Cancer Alliance (COCA), McClintock founded a website and social media site, Nail Ovarian Cancer (nailovarian cancer.org and @nail.ovarian. cancer on Instagram). The sites encourage women to share information about ovarian cancer in a non-threatening way and learn how to become better advocates for their overall health. Women are encouraged to post pictures of their nails painted teal (the color of ovarian cancer) with the hashtag #nailovarian cancer and to have two-minute Teal Talks with other women to educate them about ovarian cancer and the most common symptoms. September is national Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Blue encourages women to become familiar with the most common symptoms of ovarian cancer – bloating that is persistent, eating less and feeling fuller, abdominal pain and trouble with urination and bowel habits. A woman who experiences any of the above symptoms that persist for more than two weeks should consult her physician and ask for additional tests to rule out ovarian cancer. There is no screening test for ovarian cancer, which is the deadliest gynecologic can-

cer, so symptom recognition is critical for early diagnosis. “Women need to stick together and look out for one another,” says McClintock. “Ovarian cancer is not nearly as scary if it is caught in an early stage, so knowing the symptoms to watch out for and advocating for yourself and the women you love is essential.”

About the Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance

Founded in 2005, the mission of the nonprofit Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance is to provide support to those affected by ovarian cancer, and to promote awareness and early detection of ovarian cancer through advocacy and education. Programs include COCACares Financial Assistance, Nicki's Circle Support Groups, the Ovarian Cancer Resource Guide, Comfort Kits for the newly diagnosed, Carol’s Wish Financial Assistance Program, an annual Raise Awareness campaign, and Survivors Teaching Students: Saving Women’s Lives®, a national program of the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA). Online renewals for Coloradans ages 66+ now open for good Driver’s License Electronic Renewal By Seniors Act also simplifies drive time logs rules With the implementation of the Driver’s License Electronic Renewal By Seniors Act (HB21-1139), Colorado seniors now have the permanent ability to renew their driver license or identification card online. Coloradans ages 66 and older can renew their driver license or ID online at myDMV. Colorado.gov or via the myColorado™ app. The new law also adjusts the process for renewing driver licenses online. Now Coloradans who are older than 21, but younger than 80, must attest that they have had an eye examination within one year before renewing their driver license online. Previously, Coloradans had to attest to having had an eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist within the last three years. Additionally, Coloradans who are older than 80 and renewing their driver license electronically will need to obtain a signed statement (DR 2402) from an optometrist or ophthalmologist attesting that the person renewing their license has had an eye examination within six months and the results of the examination. This statement will need to be uploaded as part of the online renewal application process.

Prior to the public office closures and under emergency guidance from Gov. Jared Polis, the DMV opened up online renewals to Coloradans 65 and older on March 10, 2020. From March 2020 to August 2021, about 136,000 Colorado seniors renewed their license or ID online.

By continuing online renewals to seniors, the DMV was able to serve thousands of Coloradans without the need to visit a State driver license office. Coloradans who are concerned about an elder family member’s ability to drive should email dor_mvhelpdesk@ state.co.us for information about a re-examination request due to physical or mental constraints.

What are the steps to fund your trust? (Part 1 of 3)

If you have the foresight to create a Revocable Living Trust as part of your estate plan, you may have questions about the way to handle transactions, to keep the benefits of your Trust working for you. The basic principle is that the Trust must own title to the asset in order for the Trustees to manage or distribute it. The following are general steps for typical asset transfers to a Trust. The actual procedure for the transfer of your specific

assets may be different and thus, it is always advisable to confer with an estate plan attorney regarding the best steps to legally accomplish your estate planning goals.

Quit smoking: If you smoke, the best thing you can do to prevent more damage to your lungs is to quit. To get help, the National Cancer Institute offers a number of Trust, a new deed

Dear Readers,

alpha-1-antitrypsin, or AAT deficiency that can increase the risks. If you’re experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms, you need to get tested by your doctor. A simple breathing test called spirometry can tell if you have COPD, and if so, how severe it is. Early screening can also identify COPD before major loss of lung function occurs. If you do indeed have COPD, you need to know that while there’s no cure, there are things you can do to help manage symptoms and protect your lungs from further damage, including:

smoking cessation resources at SmokeFree.gov or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. Or ask your doctor about prescription antismoking drugs that can help reduce your nicotine craving. If you smoke marijuana for a medical condition, talk to your doctor about edible versions. Avoid air pollutants: Stay away from things that could irritate your lungs like dust, allergens and strong fumes. Also, to help improve your air quality at home, remove dust-collecting clutter and keep carpets clean; run the exhaust fan when using smelly cleaning products, bug sprays or paint; ban smoking indoors; and keep windows closed when outdoor air pollution is high (see AirNow.gov for daily air-quality reports). Get vaccinated: The coronavirus and flu can cause serious problems for people the Trust, among other disclosures. The Statement of Authority is also recorded in the County where the land is located. If there are mortgages on the property, it is best to consult with the financial institution which holds the mortgage to make sure it is understood that the transfer of the real property will not cause any acceleration of your mortgage. Whenever you acquire a new piece of real property, all that is needed is to place the title to the land into the name of your Trust when recording the new deed.

TRUST DEEDS AND MORTGAGES

If you own any Mortgages or Trust Deeds (where someone is paying you the money for the purchase of property), that document is a valuable asset. It should be transferred by an Assignment of Deed of Trust or Mortgage to your Trust. The Assignment needs to refer to the original recorded document, and it needs to be recorded in the County Clerk and Recorder’s office where the original Mortgage or Trust Deed was recorded. An attorney should help you prepare the necessary document of transfer.

who have COPD, so if you haven’t already done so, get vaccinated for COVID-19 and get a flu shot every fall to help avoid getting sick. Also ask your doctor about getting the pneumococcal immunizations for protection against pneumonia. Take prescribed medications: Bronchodilators (taken with an inhaler) are commonly used for COPD. They help relax the airway muscles to make breathing easier. Depending on how severe your condition, you may need a short-acting version only for when symptoms occur, or a long-acting prescription for daily use. Inhaled steroids may also help reduce inflammation and mucus and prevent flare-ups. For more information, visit the COPD Foundation at COPDfoundation.org or call the COPD information line at 866-316-2673. any charge. When opening new accounts, be sure they are opened in the name of your Trust. What are the four key medical/ estate plan documents you need now? Many of my clients have asked what are the critical documents needed, particularly in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Simply being married does not give you the legal right to gain access to your spouse’s medical records or make medical decisions on your spouse’s behalf, even in an emergency. To avoid this problem and to help others care for you and to achieve your overall estate planning goals, the following documents create an effective medical/ estate plan package:

Healthcare Power of Attorney; General Financial Power of Attorney;

Advanced Directive for Medical/Surgical Treatment (“Living Will”); and Will (or a Will with a Trust). Careful medical/estate planning should include preparation and signing of these documents, to accomplish your goals and protect you, both during your lifetime, and at the time of passing. The Power of Attorney documents allow you to designate those agents whom you authorize to help you on your behalf during your lifetime, and the Will/Trust documents allow you to nominate others to help with your estate after your passing, as well as to identify the beneficiaries and the distributions to them, to accomplish your estate planning goals.

To transfer bank, savings and loan, credit union accounts, etc., take the Statement of Authority regarding your Trust to the bank and tell them to place your accounts, C.D.’s, and Safe Deposit Boxes into the name of your Trust. Be sure to ask, in the case of time certificates of deposit, A 30% REDUCTION ON ESTATE PLAN whether the bank DOCUMENTS IS CURRENTLY BEING will charge OFFERED DUE TO THE COVID-19 CRISIS! a penalty FOR A FREE TELEPHONE OR VIDEO for early CONSULTATION, PLEASE CALL: withdrawal Donald Glenn Peterson, Esq. just because Don Peterson Law Firm of the name 4100 E.
