She had gathered with other NDP supporters that day, in front of the Electoral Offcie on Bay Street, to continue their protest against the election results. According to the NDP, the Unity Labour Party with 8 seats to the NDP’s seven, had ‘stolen the elections’, and the party had mounted a protest within a day of the December 9 poll, to show their non-acceptance of the result. News 3 Anglican Dean passes
THE WHOLE OF THE ANGLICAN Communion, particularly members of the Diocese of the Windward Islands, were thrown into shock when word quickly spread far and wide that The Very Rev’d Patrick E. Mc Intosh, Dean of the St. George’s Cathedral Kingstown, had suddenly passed away, Tuesday afternoon. Dean Mc Intosh, who up to the very day was actively engaged in pastoral duties, fell ill at the Rectory and was taken to the nearby Milton Cato Memorial Hospital where he died. Father Mac, as he was affectionately called, had on August 7th last year,
celebrated his 38th Anniversary of Ordination to the Sacred Priesthood. He served in various parishes throughout St. Vincent, including Holy Trinity Georgetown and St. James Layou, before his appointment as Dean of the Cathedral over ten years ago. He was a very hard working, energetic, and devoted servant of God, and took an active part in the activities of the various organizations of his parish, and would willingly and cheerfully assist his colleagues of other parishes. Sometimes, the Dean would officiate at two masses on a
Sunday, and afterwards visit patients at the Hospital in Kingstown. He was an indefatigable worker, and would always find time to visit the shut-ins at their homes or nursing institutions, bringing them comfort and solace, and administering the Sacrament. When a couple years ago, it was discovered that the Cathedral building had increased its deteoriation, Fr. Mac promptly closed off the affected areas, and launched an appeal for funds for repairs. It was just before last Christmas that on the engineers’ advice, church activities were transferred to
the Church of the Ascension Sion Hill, and the Cathedral reserved for only small congregations. The Dean with his usual energy was always in the vanguard of activities, and expressed his desire to see the Cathedral restored during his term of office. But, this was not to be. The master called him home. Arrangements for Father Mc Intosh’s funeral will be announced later. THE VINCENTIAN extends condolences to his wife, son, daughter and other family members, and to the Anglican fraternity on the whole. May his soul rest in peace.
Fire guts Public Works facility Popular NDP activist arrested PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS are pointing to the fact that the fire that damaged a section of the Public Works premises early Thursday morning was deliberately set.. Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, while addressing members of the press yesterday morning, said that information had been made available to him by the Police, which gave them reason to believe that Thursday morning’s fire was an act of arson. Preliminary evidence points to the fire at “That is the thesis; the Public Works Arnos Vale facility as that is the reasonable being an act of arson. suspicion upon which they are operating,” Gonsalves said. “I do not want to speak to the evidence, which the Commissioner drew to my attention, for them to conclude reasonably that it is arson. That is not my province; that is the province of the police to speak to at an appropriate time,” he continued. A quantity of building supplies, including galvanize sheets and ply wood, was destroyed in the blaze. However, the Prime Minister credited the members of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Fire Service for containing the fire and preventing a total loss. The material was to be used for the poor and need, and for persons who had their homes damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Tomas in 2011 and the floods in December 2013. Some was also allocated to the ‘Lives to Live’ programme which prompted Gonsalves to state that: “This is a fire directed against the poor people of this country. This is not a fire directed at Ralph Gonsalves. This is not a fire directed at Arnhim Eustace. A YOUNG MAN of Sion Hill who told the police about two weeks ago that he wanted to go to prison, received his jail term at the Serious Offences Court on Wednesday. Clinton Cambridge, 19, was sentenced to: five years in prison for possession of a 9mm Springfield pistol without licence; three years for having 36 rounds of ammunition without licence; and eight months for having 738 grams of marijuana with intent to supply. The sentences, handed down by Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias after Cambridge was convicted at the conclusion of a trial on Wednesday, will run concurrently. The prosecution’s evidence revealed that police officers went to Cambridge’s Sion Hill home in search of him, in respect to another report. The Court heard that Cambridge, who was met at his home, threw a gun with 16 rounds of ammunition, including one in the breach, on a bed. He also threw another 20 rounds of ammunition, which he had in one of his pockets, on the bed and said, “Officer, I giving you everything. Lock me up, I want to go jail.” The marijuana was found under the bed. Interestingly, Cambridge had pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was not represented by a lawyer. Sexual offences to get increased attention by HAYDN HUGGINS THE ROYAL St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) will be stepping up its game this year, with respect to the investigation of sexual offences. The word came from Commissioner of Police Michael Charles while speaking to THE VINCENTIAN on Tuesday. The top cop said sexual offences, especially those involving minors, are a major concern of the constabulary, and will be dealt with very seriously in 2016 and beyond, as far as crime fighting measures are concerned. The Commissioner said a Sexual Offences Crime Unit, aimed primarily at investigating sexual offences, is already in place, although it has not yet been officially launched. Charles noted that the local constabulary had received equipment from the York Regional Police in Canada last year to assist the Unit, and he assured that the equipment will be fully utilized. John, represented by attorney Ronald Marks, pleaded not guilty to both charges when he stood before Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias, and was released on $7,000 bail with one surety. He had made it clear that the occurrence had nothing to do with politics. When contacted on Tuesday for a comment, Commissioner of Police Michael Charles told THE VINCENTIAN that the decision to charge John is nothing outside the norm, since all matters that have been reported to the police are investigated. The top cop pointed out that during his tenure, several police officers have been arrested and
taken to Court on criminal charges, and some of them were convicted. The Commissioner explained that this is an indication that the Police High Command has been taking the necessary steps to ensure that members of the Police Force are above board. He noted that there are other reports involving police officers, still under investigation. Neil was shot about two weeks after electrical engineer James Adolphus Gould of Diamonds claimed police shot him in the upper right side, as he made his way to work around 9:45 a.m. on June 10, 2015. Up to press time Wednesday that matter was still under investigation. Meanwhile, P.C. John is on suspension pending the outcome of his case.

The police chief also revealed that training for all sections of the police force will be paramount this year and beyond, with special emphasis on the Criminal Records Office (CRO)/IT Unit, Major Crime Unit (MCU) and Coast Guard. No arrest in attempted firebomb UP TO PRESS TIME on Wednesday, the culprit(s) who attempted to fire bomb the St Vincent Electricity Services (VINLEC) head office at Paul’s Avenue was (were) yet to be apprehended. Superintendent of Police Ruth Jacobs, who heads the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), told THE VINCENTIAN that the matter had since been referred to the Major Crimes Unit for further investigations. “We decided to put it to a higher level, the Major Crimes Unit, because I think it is a very serious offence,” the Head of CID explained. The state-owned utility company issued a press release on Monday stating that members of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) responded to a report, on the said day, of a suspicious material appearing to be rubber that was seen on VINLEC’s compound. The police discovered charred remains of a clothlike material and fragments of a burnt bottle on the premises of VINLEC. This follows on a similar incident which occurred on January 1, when a security guard discovered pieces of broken glass and a cloth like material in an area behind VINLEC’s office building. On both occasions, an odour similar to that of kerosene came from the pieces of broken bottle. Police met with VINLEC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Thornley Myers at the company’s Cane Hall plant, SP Jacobs said. This was to discuss security measures that had since been implemented on all 55 facilities owned by VINLEC throughout the country SP Jacobs said. (DDD)

Different elections results: Similar reaction RECENT PARLIAMENTARY elections in allied countries Venezuela and St. Vincent and the Grenadines threw up vastly different margins of victory. Held three days apart, the Venezuela election of December 6, 2015 resulted in the opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD), coming away with a clear two-thirds majority when it grabbed 112 places in a 167-seat parliament, defeating the Nicolas Maduro-led United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), which had not been defeated in 16 years. In the December 9, 2015 poll in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the incumbent Unity Labour Party was returned to office with the same one-seat majority it had gained in 2010, and with the same configuration (8 — 7) of constituency distribution. Now, losers in both countries have resorted to challenging the elections, albeit with different intentions. While the opposition New Democratic Party in SVG has already begun Court proceedings which challenge the result, its intention is to have the result overturned in its favour, or that by-elections be ordered in the constituencies whose results they

Official word from Jamaica late last week indicated that no bids had been received by the submission deadline of December 30, 2015. Dwight Venner, Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB). A new Governor was expected to be appointed by December 1, in time to assume duties from Sir Dwight who departed office on November 31. However, even though an original shortlist of applicants had offered a choice from among four, which included Vincentian Dr. Wendell Samuel, and a subsequent short listing brought it down to a choice between two, it appears from all reports that the Eastern Caribbean Monetary Council (ECMC), charged with making the final decision, has been unable to break a deadlock on the final choice. The date for the appointment was then shifted to the middle of December. The two under consideration are: Grenada’s Timothy Antoine, an economist and currently the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance in Grenada; and St Lucia’s Dr Hyginus Leon, a senior official at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for close to 20 years.
Early reports making the rounds in the subregion pointed to a decision in favour of Leon, as had been recommended by the Search Committee set up earlier this year to make recommendations for Sir Dwight’s replacement. There appears, however, according to reports, that at least two Prime Ministers of countries served by the ECCB - Gaston Browne of Antigua and Dr. Keith Mitchell of Grenada had some reservation about Leon’s appointment, and instead favoured Antoine. Information is that Antoine is a relative of Dr. Mitchell, and while regional commentators and others have stopped short of crying ‘Nepotism’, others are adamant that this cannot be ruled out, regrettably so, as a contributing factor in the delay in making an appointment. This is the second time in the recent past that Caribbean leaders have been at variance with one another over the appointment of persons to top regional and international posts. Readers will recall the regional split over Baroness Patricia Scotland and Sir Ronald Saunders with respect to the two vying for the post of Secretary General of the Commonwealth.

Trinity uplifts Lewis Punnett Home
Right: Transport and Security personnel did the painting.
FIFTY-FIVE MEMBERS of staff and faculty of the Trinity School of Medicine, on Monday, 21st and Tuesday, 22nd December, enhanced the lives of the staff and residents at the Lewis Punnett Home at Glen. Group leader Dr. Conrad Nedd said, “What we are doing is, we are working on improving the physical environment but, at the same time, we are taking the opportunity to provide some medical care for them. “All patients would be seen throughout the two days. We’ll first concentrate on the female ward, then we will move on to the males,” he said. Nedd added that it was the group’s desire to make the health visits a continuing feature. The physical improvements included a thorough cleaning of the facility through power washing, mopping and sweeping; painting of the male and female wards; the laying of carpeting in some wards, and providing new bed linens for the residents. The group also distributed care packages to each person, and congregated with them in the chapel in a service of thanksgiving. Dr. Nedd explained that, “We just want to try to make a difference in the lives of the residents because we recognize that they have needs.”
But Dr. Nedd did not stop there. He emphasized the need for the community, as a whole to play a role in the upkeep of such facilities. “The Lewis Punnett Home is an institution that belongs to the community even though it is staffed by the government. I think if the community comes together, we can meet some of the residents’ needs,” he said. It was his firm belief that this country needed to see the Lewis Punnett Home as an opportunity to take care of the elderly. Head of the Deanery at Trinity, Mrs. Kaushalya Nedd, lauded the volunteers who willingly took the days off to complete the exercise. “We know that two days will not be sufficient where cleaning is concerned, so we’ve planned to return once a month to do general cleaning,” she said. Staff Nurse Mayers at the HomeHome felt that the venture was a good one. “It is not every day that the residents and staff alike get to see something like this. One for the Catholics BISHOP-ELECT of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidadian Fr. Gerard Maximin County CSSp, was presented to Catholics here over the weekend. News broke some two weeks ago that the Roman Catholic diocese of Kingstown was once again going to be separated from its twin, Bridgetown, paving the way for the appointment of separate bishops. Fr. County’s appointment as Bishop of Kingstown means that he replaces Bishop Jason Gordon who, in 2011, was appointed Bishop of a rebirthed Bridgetown/Kingstown diocese. Bishop Gordon will remain Bishop of Bridgetown. Bishop Gordon, of course, was preceded by Bishop Robert Rivas, who was appointed Bishop of Kingstown in 1990, when the Bridgetown/Kingstown diocese was split. Bishop Rivas himself had replaced Bishop Anthony Dickson, who was appointed Bishop of the new Bridgetown/Kingstown diocese in 1970. Bishop Dickson, a Jamaican, was then one of a very few Caribbean Diocesan (unattached) priests to be elevated to the Roman Catholic bishopric. He was appointed in 1970 and ordained (Bishop) in 1971. Since Bishop Dickson’s retirement, 1990, Kingstown has been served, beginning with Bishop Rivas and through to Bishop-elect County, by Trinidad and Tobago born priests, all of whom are members of the order of priests known as Holy Ghost (Spiritan) Fathers (CSSp). From the fore-mentioned brief , it is safe to say that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kingstown is a relatively young one — one still grappling with the challenges of finding its true place and role in ministering to its congregants and the wider society, to which it is equally responsible. The bishopric of Anthony Dickson was historic; he was Bishop/Shepherd to a new diocese, forged out of two vastly different island societies. And ‘it came to pass’ that those who had ‘furnaced’ the forging of this new diocese in the first place, admitted eventually that the two were unequally yoked, and it was both mentally and physically trying for anyone to serve ‘two masters at the same time’. Bishop Gordon may well have experienced this burden as well Nonetheless, Bishop Dickson laboured on, and while it was easy to conform to the demands of a developing Barbados, it was a greater challenge ministering in a less developed political climate and moreso, to what was clearly an unprepared Vincentian Catholic community. That he also ministered during a period of heightened ‘experimentation’
with non-traditional political thought and practices, did not make it any easier, though his wisdom influenced an understanding of how a church needed to adapt to the changing Caribbean dynamics. So much so, he was not afraid to bring the Church in question of the status quo, remaining committed always to spreading a gospel and Church that safeguarded the interest of the common good. There came a period into the 1990 when the ‘radicals’ of the 1970s and 80s had all but tempered, making it somewhat easier for Bishop Dickson’s successor to cut a pastoral pathway for a church that seemed to have grown weary of its questioning role in society. The Catholic Church of Kingstown became conformist and comfortable. Then came Bishop Gordon — fresh and energised by a world changed and everchanging under the weight of modern technology. Kingstown might well have offered a greater challenge to the new Bishop, but there seemed to have been a concerted effort on his part, to be informed by those he shepherded. A mixture of returning to fundamental Catholic Catechism with a renewed if not freshened approach to its application, appeared to prove attractive to Catholics who had longed to be fortified in defence of their faith. Where Catholics might have felt uneasy with their new bishop, was with his effort to have the church respond honestly to those political and social variables, which denied the true fulfilment of the gospel. The result might have been something akin to a dichotomy in the Vincentian Catholic community, but that in itself is not a bad thing; for it is first in bridging whatever chasm that exist in one’s church, that prepares us to influence a similar bridge in society generally. Church, it seems, according to the pathway encouraged by Bishop Gordon, was for all the people all the time, within and without the church. Church in fulfilling the “word of God’, if we may stretch our deduction of Bishop Gordon’s time with us, will prove unpopular as it stands up to evil in society, for to do so is to stand up to those who perpetuate that evil. To answer the question about whether Vincentian Catholics are better armoured to lead and/or contribute to the ‘building of Good’s Kingdom on earth’, is to seek an answer to the impact of Bishop Gordon. Then here is Bishop Gerard County. Where he goeth is left to be seen. But one thing is certain: he will go into places, pronounce on what retards the spreading of the Word of God, but only to the extent that Catholics support him.
Perspectives on Political Leadership in SVG MANY PERSONS have been drilled and brain-washed, especially over the past fifteen years, into believing that Dr Gonsalves is invincible, a populist figure, a charismatic leader who possesses magical qualities, if not spiritual grace. The truth is that Gonsalves is a topnotch politician, a superb operator, an inspired calculator versed in the machinations of political warfare, with a particular gift for in-fighting. The foregoing does not seek to derogate from Dr. Gonsalves of the good that he has the capacity to accomplish, but simply infers that he tends to get carried away by his string of successes, and drifts into his own world of self-promotion and selfaggrandisement. Let us take an objective look at four Vincentian political leaders since adult suffrage, and see where Ralph fits into the schema. Joshua won elections 1951 to 1979, 28 years. He led his PPP to power, such as it was, in 1957, 1961 and 1966 — 3 in a row. He won his seat from Day One and lost only in 1979. In 1957 he had left his constituency of North Windward and pitched camp in Central Windward where he fulfilled his promise of toppling George Charles, the leader of the 8th Army of Liberation which had launched Joshua into Politics. Milton Cato lost his first election in South Leeward in 1957 and switched to East St. George in 1961which he won in 7 straight elections, leading the country as the first Premier and Prime Minister until he resigned after the 1984 elections. In sum, he had led his SVLP to victory in 1967, 1974 and 1979. Altogether he served his country for 23 years, not counting one year in the West Indies Federal Parliament. James “Son” Mitchell’s political career spanned 34 years, 1966 to 2001, during which he led a coalition Government of himself and the PPP for 2 ½ years, and the NDP for 4 terms in a row 1984, 1989, 1994 and 1998 including 1989 when the NDP won all 15 elected seats! Like Cato, Mitchell had suffered one defeat in his time, when to expand the reach of a developing N.D.P, he had left his constituency safely in the arms of Cosmos Cozier, but he failed to win the seat of South Central Windward which was gained by Offord Morris of SVLP. Unlike Joshua and Mitchell, both of whom stepped out of his comfort zone to extend the reach of their party, Ralph remained glued to his stomping ground
of North Central Windward. I thought that in the 2015 election, he would have left Camillo with his fiefdom and go and challenge either Eustace for East Kingstown or more wisely, Linton Lewis for East Saint George. Either the strong man Gonsalves was too cowardly or too selfish to run that risk notwithstanding the constant rhetoric of bragging rights! Actually, he should have recalled that Vincent Beache, who on the U.L.P arrangement 1994 surrendered his hold on North Central Windward to Ralph, and betook himself to the untested ground of South-Windward which both ULPites captured, releasing the party from the Death-strangle-hold of NO seats since 1989 and in effect starting the renaissance of the U.L.P which has climaxed in the glory of a Four in a row triumph, albeit with two one-seat majorities. In stark electoral terms, the scorecard shows that Ralph who entered politics in 1979, lost his first THREE IN A ROW — 1979, 1984 and 1989. Then followed with six victories in a total of Nine attempts. As for Arnhim, he has scored FIVE TIMES IN FIVE TRIES — 100 per cent!! You see how a past-master of propaganda can mislead a nation, particularly the U.L.P chattering nabobs! In fact, on second thoughts, Ralph remains a commanding and forceful leader, but falls short of being charismatic. The charismatic is BORN NOT MADE; as were Alexander Bustamante of Jamaica, Vere Bird of Antigua, Ebenezer Joshua of St. Vincent, Eric Gairy of Grenada and Uriah “Buzz” Butler of Trinidad and Tobago. Ralph accumulated charismatic qualities after toiling for fifteen years in the wilderness 1979-1994. He had learnt of the traits of charisma when we studied in graduate classes at U.W.I in the 1970s, and he later cultivated and easily adopted the particular mode and style among an unsophisticated and gullible people. Finally, a simple error. At the opening of the House, the Honourable Prime Minister had hailed defeated candidate for North Leeward Carlos James as the youngest ever appointee to the posts of Deputy Speaker and a senator. In 1966, almost fifty years ago, the PPP had so appointed 27-years-old Lawyer Errol Layne with five years practice under his belt to the said post of Senator (then Nominated Member) and Deputy Speaker!

I RECENTLY read an article on Facebook purported to be posted by an NDP supporter. I am not in the least interested in whether the individual is in fact an NDP supporter or not. I am one of the silent majority of Vincentians who would support any party who put development of St. Vincent and the Grenadines before self. That said, I must admit that the writer’s analysis regarding Mr. Arnhim Eustace and other members of the NDP was sound. If I was a politician and went to the polls and lost on two occasions, the first time I would say ‘shame on them’, the second time, I would say ‘shame on me’, and henceforth there would not be a third time. We have politicians of both the ULP and NDP who have now
offered themselves three or more times and have failed to win a seat. They should all retire immediately. The fore-mentioned should also apply to the leader of any political party. I am firmly of the opinion that the current call for civil disobedience by Mr. Eustace is mainly to hoodwink the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The truth is, it’s time for him to go as leader, and place the party into more capable hands. Academically, he may have impeccable qualities, but the kinder and gentle qualities that he wants to promote are not part of his persona. He comes across as an angry, vindictive person, who would hold an eternal grudge against anyone who opposes his views.
THUS SAITH YAHUVEH: My beloved whom I treasure like no other treasure you have on earth, I see your pain; it is a deep wracking pain. How can people not of my spirit feel your pain or see what I have shown you or told you? Would they not have also called John the Baptist insane? Would they not have also sought to tranqualize him for his behaviour, and Elizah, Jeremiah and all my prophets? Think of what this modern day world that shuts out the voice of Almighty Yahuveh would do with these prophets of old. You are like a Jonah being sent to Ninevah, and how few have listened or heard my warnings. But they shall see as what I have spoken through you will come to pass through you. Think not it strange for those you think are saved. Are they truly? Do you really know their hearts, those who inflict great gaping wounds in your soul? I have not sent them to torment you, for you are my beloved treasure. Learn not unto thy own understanding; acknowledge me and I will direct your paths. Trust not anyone, except those from whom you know you can hear my voice. Do nothing unless I give
you perfect peace that passes all understanding. I have not forsaken you nor will I ever. I am your first love; all others are second to the Almighty God. Yahuveh you serve, keeps telling of my mercies, and love, but warn of wrath and vengeance, if they don’t turn from their wicked ways. I, Yahuveh, am sufficient in all things, but everything has a time and a season, and I will not put you more than you can bear. Yes, my beloved, you have suffered for my namesake; yes you have been called mentally ill, but those that call you these names are spiritually ill. You weep, but they are my tears; you sigh, but it is my sighing; you grieve, but it is my grief. This too, shall pass. You shall rejoice once again. Your life is not over, it has just begun. If you are broken-hearted, please do not give up. Yahuveh is close to the broken-hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted (Matthew 5:3-3-4). They that sow in tears shall reap in joy (Psalm 126:5).
The civil disobedience that Mr. Eustace is prompting leaves one to believe that everything regarding the complaints in Central Leeward have failed, and the party now has no recourse but to try and disrupt every aspect of Vincentian life. By calling for this action, what he is saying is that his complaints before the court would not be upheld, therefore, let’s get on with the civil disobedience. I really can’t believe that senior members of the NDP and the lawyers advising them support this nonsense that can only hurt not help the country, that we all love and call home. Vincy

Welcome, Dr. Jules When I left SVG, Jules Ferdinand, now Dr. Jules Ferdinand, was in charge of the Liberty Lodge Boys Centre. MR. EDITOR, I refer to a letter in your issue of December 31, 2015, signed by one ‘Passy’, and captioned ‘Qualifying for a Christmas Gift’. Now, I must commend Mr. Passy for his style. I found his reference to Santa Claus very amusing, and it indeed brought back some memories of my own childhood. But his real point about how Santa Claus could reward the ULP with a Christmas gift like victory at the polls, didn’t find full favour with me. I want to turn around Mr. Passy’s argument and ask: Wasn’t it because the NDP was ‘naughty’ why Santa Claus did not reward them with a Christmas gift of victory at the polls? If Mr. Passy is correct about Santa Claus, then it must be that Santa would have long ago figured out who was ‘naughty or nice’. It must be that he thought the ULP was ‘nice’, and that the NDP was ‘naughty’. So, we must live with the result. But if you ask me for my honest opinion, if I were Santa Claus, I would not have given either of the two parties any Christmas gift. As far as I was concerned, they were both ‘naughty’. Charles

NOW THAT the elections have come to a conclusion, I want the people to realize that God is still on the throne. He is in control, in spite of all the controversies. If God wanted the NDP to win the election, they would have won. But He can see what we can’t see. He opens doors and he closes doors. He’s always behind the scene, so He knows everything. Now, I’m writing this letter for the righteous, conscious people. But let me start off with my story first. I joined/registered with the Selfemployment Scheme of the NIS some years ago. When I visited the NIS to register as a selfemployed, the customer clerk asked me what category I would like to join. I asked the clerk to name out the categories, and after that was done, I said I liked the one from which I can get eight hundred dollars when I reach 60 — the eligible age for a pension. The agony of defeat The Issue THERE IS ONE INESCAPABLE fact that has emerged from the general elections of December 9th 2015, and that is, that the people of St.Vincent and the Grenadines gave the Unity Labour Party, a majority of the seats in the country, a margin of eight seats to seven. They did this, when 34,246 voters cast their ballots next to the star, and in support of the ULP. As the field of mathematics goes, eight is more than seven, and a clear three thousand more than the 31,027 persons who voted for opposition NDP. So, if one wants to talk about the will of the people, then these numbers clearly demonstrated what the voters of this country want, and that is, for the Unity Labour Party to be the political party to administer the affairs of the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the next five years. That is the will of the people, and it cannot be disputed. What this situation has resulted in, is to plunge the NDP into what is called “the agony of defeat”. They are in a position where they are experiencing “intense long term physical, mental and emotional pain”, which affects the thought and decision making process. It is this malady that is affecting Arnhim Eustace and the NDP. It is this malady that has caused the NDP to make mistake after mistake, and to embarrass their supporters through the exhibition of poor political judgment.
The conduct of the NDP It is clear to all and sundry that the NDP did not expect to win the general elections on December 9th 2015. Their conduct in the campaign leading up to the poll tells a critical story of their denial, and the false hope they instilled in their supporters, all to no avail. Take the case of St. Clair Leacock. He is perhaps the only NDP candidate who exercised some shrewdness. When he observed the support being provided to the ULP, by the young people of this country, he was moved to exclaim, that “too many young persons are following the ULP”, and he expressed his concern. It is the support of young persons between the ages of eighteen to thirty, coupled with older Vincentians above the age of sixty, which formed the base of the voter support for the ULP. In the case of the young people, the NDP could not provide a coherent and attractive message. They abandoned many of their stated positions and projects in their manifesto, and in the final days of the campaign, opted to support many of the programmes of the ULP, including the YES programme, the Home Help for the Elderly, and the International Airport project. Clearly, the 31,246 persons who supported the ULP, were not impressed with this duplicity by the NDP. Additionally, the NDP talked about some “pie in the sky” projects, touting a hospital in East St. George, and a cruise ship terminal in Chateaubelair.
They promised their key supporters jobs, in the police force, in the public service, and in the embassies abroad. They created a strong expectancy among their supporters, assuring them of a victory that was not based on the reality of the situation. Now the agony of defeat has set in. They are tasting the bitterness of defeat, and the reality of another five years in the wilderness of the opposition.
The defeat of Linton Lewis In all the agony suffered by the NDP, the defeat of Linton Lewis is perhaps the most bitter. Linton Lewis, a three time candidate in the constituency of East St. George, must have fancied his chances against Camillo Gonsalves, a first time candidate, who replaced Clayton Burgin. After all, it must be said that Lewis, who holds a Doctorate, and who called himself “home boy”, must have started with an advantage. The propaganda over this electoral race was tremendous, with Camillo Gonsalves being described as a “foreigner”. The long and short of this story, is due to some excellent political work and organization, Camillo Gonsalves administered one of the most severe political floggings to Linton Lewis, to the extent that Lewis has virtually gone into hiding. This defeat clearly sums up the agony that the NDP is facing at the present time. And so having provided their supporters with a false sense of hope, the NDP will find it difficult to back away from this situation. Having lied all through the political campaign leading up to the last election, having shown no leadership, and being unable to provide the electorate with a vision, a philosophy and sensible plans and programmes, the NDP now finds itself in the wilderness again. Arnhim Eustace has now attained the unenviable record of having lost four elections in a row, as the leader of a mass political party. This is real agony!
Conclusion The NDP must now look hard within itself to determine the way forward. We wish them luck with that process, and Vincentians will observe with keen interest how the NDP resolves this current crisis, which, at some time, will include the issue of leadership. Meanwhile the ULP, under the leadership of Comrade Ralph, will get down to the business of running the country for another five years. There is much work to be done, and a lot of discipline will be required, to take the country forward, given the current global economic conditions. The next five years will be an exciting period in the developmental history of the country.
The struggle continues THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY (NDP) will not accept the results of the December 9th general elections. Neither will it recognize the illegitimate Unity Labour Party (ULP) regime, because the elections were stolen. As a result, the party has filed elections petitions in the court, and we await the date for the commencement of those cases. Meanwhile, the party will continue with its protests and demonstrations. And in doing so, a number of patriotic Vincentians have picketed the Electoral Office on a daily basis. They are standing firm for freedom, justice and free and fair elections. The leaders of this movement, and all those who are participating in the struggle, should be commended highly. We must preserve the electoral process and democracy in this country. Most Vincentians are conscious of the struggles that our fore parents went through, which brought about adult suffrage. Now, sadly, we are faced with the challenge to preserve the electoral process. The electoral process should not be eroded by a minority of power-hungry individuals who want to hold on to power at all costs, against the wishes of the electorate of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. We must continue the struggle. Notwithstanding, the elected members and senators of the NDP went to parliament and were sworn in. For clarity, this is what the Honourable Arnhim Eustace had to say on the matter: “While we wanted to stay away from the opening of parliament on Tuesday, our lawyers have advised that the duly elected members on our side must attend and be sworn in. This, they have advised, is strictly for technical legal reasons, and should in no way be seen as a contradiction to our stance. It was our desire to stay away from the very beginning. But we have listened to our lawyers and to many patriotic Vincentians on this issue. “Once we are officially sworn in as MPs, rest assured that we have appropriate ways to ensure that this so-called government accounts to WE THE PEOPLE. As we go forward, be wary of attempts to divide the community on this issue. This illegal regime will want to make this ongoing struggle about me or about my party. We should not let them derail us. This struggle is about YOU — and about WE THE PEOPLE.”
Vincentians voted for change On the 9th December, 2015, Vincentians went to the polls and they voted for change. They voted against the fourteen (14) years of corrupt practices and victimization of the ULP regime. The ULP has been the most corrupt administration ever to govern St. Vincent and the Grenadines. There was corruption at the then National Commercial Bank (NCB), where a former board member was involved in a questionable banking transaction at the said bank. The Director of Audit found that officials managing the Cuban Integrated Health Project in the Ministry of Health had bought computer supplies and fast food, and paid monies to the International Airport Development Company (IADC) contrary to government policy. Also, in the Ministry of Agriculture, under the Agriculture Diversification Project, a microphone cable was
imported at a cost of US $12.14, ($EC32.73) and was sold to the ministry for EC$1499.76, (US$555.46).a sum of $1m was deposited at the former National Commercial Bank In addition, at the Ministry of Tourism, a senior government official was involved in a company that was formed to market and promote tourism in this country. And there was the sudden recall of the Deputy Consul General from the Consulate in New York and the situation involving the former registrar. Victimization has been institutionalized by the ULP regime. From 2001, the ULP government started to victimize Vincentians who were perceived to be supporters of the NDP. Over eight hundred workers, including watchmen and cleaners, were dismissed from their jobs; the management team of VINLEC was sent packing; and eighty Port Police were fired. Individuals, such as Otto Sam, Margaret London, Douglas De Freitas, Marcus De Freitas, Junior Bacchus, Curtis Bowman, Elvis Daniel, Addison ‘Bash’ Thomas, Kenroy Johnson, also felt the wrath of the regime. Vincentians also voted against the high incidence of rape and violence against women. The following figures presented by the Honourable Arnhim Eustace at a women’s symposium in 2015, reported: “A 2007 United Nations report ranked St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3rd in the world for rape. According to Yasmin Solitahe Odlum of the Inter American Commission, St. Vincent and the Grenadines ranks highest in the OECS for the number of reported cases of rape in the period 2000 to 2010, with 802 reported cases of rape in St. Vincent during that period; Antigua and Barbuda ranked second in the OECS with 569 cases. Of the 43 cases of femicides, the murder of women, 17 were at the hands of women’s partners or former partners. “In 2012, the United Nations released three tables that gave snapshots of one of the worst of the challenges that disproportionately affect women globally — sexual violence. The first table provides data on police-recorded cases of sexual violence, which the table defines as rape and sexual assault, and includes sexual crimes against children in 102 countries across the world, from 2003 to 2011. Bear in mind that the table specifies police-recorded as opposed to reported cases. In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, there is no requirement for police to record every report of a sexual offence received. “For the period 2004 to 2011, we averaged second among 102 countries. In 2004, we are ranked 1st with a rate of 177.8 per 100,000. In 2005, 4th with a rate of 104.8 per 100,000. In 2006, 2nd with a rate of 139.6 per 100,000. In 2007, 4th with a rate of 133 per 100,000. In 2008, 4th with a rate of 154.8 per 100,000. In 2009, 2nd with a rate of 186.7 per 100,000. In 2010, 2nd with a rate of 153.7 per 100,000. And in 2011, the last year on record, we are ranked 1st — the very worst for rape.” A few of the issues why Vincentians voted for change.

Battered, Bruised, and Burnt ⁄ Awe inspiring with some hard truths But Beautiful and Blessed
“Battered and bruised but still fighting for dominance his was not the selfish petty pride that made bullies of lesser men, but rather the quiet determined dignity that turned men into heroes and made heroes crawl back to their feet from the bitter dust of defeat and overall good. MY ENTRY into elective politics after 4 decades of activist work, was a defining moment for me. Defining, in that it demonstrated in crystal clear terms the raw emotions and feelings of people. If nothing else, the elections campaign convinced me that politicians must become awe struck by the tremendous love and attention they generate and receive from ordinary people. We can foolishly and mistakenly feel that we are indispensible, but our mortality is a constant reminder that there are a lot of indispensible men lying in the national cemetery. The first thing that must be said is that the will of the people must be respected at all times. No false hopes must be placed in the head of the people. Those who lose must accept defeat and plan for the future if there is one for the individual candidates. After 22 months of candidates’ contact with the people of South Leeward, the voters got the chance to chose whom they wanted to represent them. They choose the incumbent. Too say that I am not disappointed by the loss, will be to betray the good sense and edict of the ancestors: ‘To thyself first be true.’ The disappointment is even more stinging when the major activists for the opposition openly proclaim that they thought they had lost. Others admit that they don’t know how they won. I know why the ULP lost, and I will tell readers. There is no doubt in my mind that South Leeward is Labour, and the NDP should not have won in 2010 and 2015. However, it must be admitted that the NDP brand in South Leeward is formidable. Even with a weak candidate and a lacklustre performance by the party after the bell was rung, Mr. Stephenson emerged winner by 100 plus votes. Importantly, the victory of the NDP can be attributed to the decision of Mr. Jerry Scott to mount the platform of the NDP two weeks before the elections. His speech on that evening convinced NDP supporters loyal to him, that he was still in the fold and once he is, there they too must go out and vote the party to which he initially attracted them. Mr. Scott had been heavily courted by both parties. For more than a year I spoke to Mr. Scott in an attempt to convince him that I would be a worthy continuator of his efforts at representation. He listened but was noncommittal. Tactically, I was prepared to silently approach, and hoped against hope that he remained silent and off the campaign trail. The quiet diplomacy was broken. Mr. Scott felt compelled to tell the NDP supporters he was still in the fold. His entry created enough of a ripple to take NDP over the top. But remember I said South Leeward is Labour. Dougie Slater broke through 17 years of NDP domination of South Leeward in 2001 and won by 563. It is clear that the Jerry Scott factor while still critical and decisive in 2010 and 2015, could have been beaten back. Why did that not happen? Some people say we did not do enough work on the ground. It is doubtful whether another 100 hours on the ground would have made a difference. What is absolutely certain is that there is no other candidate in the last general elections, with the possible exception of Luke Browne, who had more contact with the people that we did in South Leeward. One
member of the South Leeward team said he did so much work and may never want to work so hard again. Some also say the cause of the defeat can be traced to the failure of the candidate to work his loin and groin. I reject the proposition on both moral and ethical grounds. Our women are to be lifted up, not to be used as a means to an end. No matter how much time party activists spend in Campden Park, unless the people feel ULP genuinely cares for them, the party will be foolhardy to think that it will break the NDP lock on the area. If the Campden Park community centre remains closed for lack of repairs and the Campden Park and Penniston fields get attention only a few months before an election after 10 years of being neglect, it is hardly likely that many voters, especially youths, will be sufficiently impressed to cast their votes for the governing party. If the voters of Clare Valley go to the polls with major concerns at the new housing development, where one home collapsed, and with long stretches of their road dug up just before elections and not paved, only the enduring and endearing power of labour, as well as the hard work done by party activists, who miraculous won both stations in that village, explain ULP performance there. Vermont, Penniston and Dubois are decidedly Labour, but the roads are in a deplorable state. You don’t have more proud and vocal labour villages that Francois and Penniston, but the attention and services do not meet the enthusiasm of the voters there. The Vermont Valley is the home of proud farmers where many live off the land; but the roads at Very Vine, Gaskell, Paradise, and Dubois mountains are in some places impassable. Fix those roads, and you recommit the Labour faithful in the farming community as well as their children. This can be done because it was done in some other areas. South Leeward is Labour. Address those most pressing concerns of the people in these strong Labour areas and the ULP vote count jumps by at least another 200. Where the voter is taken for granted and the party bet on loyalty alone, the vote may stay constant or increase in only small numbers. The NDP vote in Campden Park increased by just over 120, enough to give it victory, even though the ULP also had incremental increases in every polling station in South Leeward. Failure to scientifically do the things that directly touch and concern the people, especially supporters, explains the difference between success and failure. The truth is the ULP lost South Leeward because the party electoral strategy was not sufficiently global. An all Leeward strategy anchored by the party’s solid support on the central and eastern parts of the country would have borne much fruits. Look closely and there is an unmistakable fact. All of the main land is trending Labour. Send comments, criticisms & suggestions to jomosanga@gmail.com

I had an awful experience being locked up at Her Majesty’s Prison for the very first time. I was shocked by the horrible conditions and the general operation of the prison. This is supposed to be a place where offenders are sent to be rehabilitated in order to become better human beings so they can be reintegrated into society more wholesomely. But, who cares if good people, mostly poor, have to suffer unjustly because of an immoral law set by the Westminister/Great Britain? I was arrested for marijuana (cannabis sativa), a natural plant that has a rich heritage of healing values and recreational purposes. This natural plant was created by the Most High of Creation for the natural service of man. It was not created by man, like cigarette, alcohol, cocaine or heroin. Just like every other herb, it was created for man by the great Creator of man, yet, I was arrested by men and sent to prison by people who wish to manipulate the original laws of the universe. Prison took away my free will and I was left dehumanized by the worst experience of my entire life. We, inmates, were treated worse than animals regardless of the offence. Most of us had nothing but a blanket to sleep on the cold concrete floor filled with bugs and blood stains of bugs, all over the glooming cell. I spent nine days without seeing the stars in the night sky or seeing anything that resembled a natural environment. Even the courtesy of a simple phone call, to which I had a right, was denied me as I tried to make a call to get someone on the outside to sign my bail bond, resulting in me spending extra, unnecessary time in prison.
education not only sets a child off on the right foot at school, but has effects that last right into the workplace. No child should start school behind their peers’. In order for the children of SVG to be able to compete with children from across the world for high-paid, highskilled jobs, they must be given a highquality education. This is best done by giving them a university education, built on a solid educational foundation created in pre-school, and nurtured in primary and secondary school. The whole education journey in SVG should be free, so children of the poor get an equal opportunity to a good education. SVG Green Party www.svggreenparty.org
Prison: Going nowhere
Further, there was nothing really educational to quip us to live more purposefully and productively as human. There were not much mental or physical activities to help us to develop and grow. The diet was unhealthy with no real vitality. I felt I was going to die because most of the food served was starchy food, and I am a natural. Prison appeared to be a deliberate effort to integrate persons like me into an environment that was very unhealthy, degrading and hostile to my entire well-being, I don’t know how on heaven’s earth anyone can be rehabilitated in such horrible conditions. The society in which we live has too many social injustices and double standards that need to be addressed from the highest level right down to the common level. Our people deserve much better as human beings. We are all equal in the eyes of the Most High, and we all deserve universal justice and equality, regardless of race, religion, colour or creed. Our fundamental rights and freedom need to be addressed properly at the level of the people, and our divinity and sovereignty as a nation, My arrest was for marijuana - the same marijuana the Prime Minister of St.Vincent and Grenadines and other administrators speak so highly about as having medicinal value. They are also well aware that it can be used to stablize the economy. kebratafari@yahoo.com

EGERTON MCNEIL RICHARDS, whom we remember with reverence, was a tailor, police, estate manager, politician, hotel operator and entrepreneur extraordinaire. ‘Eggie’, as he was affectionately called, died January 12, 2001, two days after his 72nd birthday, leaving behind an indelible mark across the landscape of his beloved St. Vincent and the Grenadines; a mark built on the strength of his ingenuity and, some say, his daring spirit. Not least among his legacy is the continuing impact of Metrocint General Insurance Company, which he founded and established on December 31, 1968, making it the first indigenous insurance company in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. For that, he endeared himself as ‘Uncle Metro’. In line with this successful venture into an otherwise foreign-dominated
(insurance) market, ‘Eggy’ is remembered for salvaging this country’s oldest newspaper, THE VINCENTIAN, from the brink of extinction. Together, Metrocint General Insurance Company and THE VINCENTIAN NEWSPAPER form a stable and influential force on contemporary Vincentian society, buttressed by the commitment and forthrightness of his wife, Noreen, and daughter, Desiree, who oversee his endevours today. ‘Uncle Metro’ will always remain the motivation for the spirit of dedication that abounds among all those responsible for continuing the causes to which he committed his life’s work. You are forever in our thoughts, ‘Uncle Metro’. Continue to rest in peace in the bosom of the Lord.

Oil deal with Venezuela looks bleak THE FUTURE of Petro Caribe looks bleak. So says the Leader of the Opposition New Democratic Party Arnhim Eustace who on Monday, during the New Times radio programme, said that statements were being made by members of Venezuela’s coalition of opposition parties, Mesa de la Unidad Democratica (MUD), that that country’s oil and the benefits ought to assist the Venezuelan people first. The MUD defeated the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (USPV), led by Nicolas Maduro, in the December 6, 2015 Parliamentary Elections, sparking concern as to the future of the PetroCaribe agreement, which affords countries in the Caribbean and Latin America a facility to purchase oil on concessionary conditions. According to Eustace, there were certain developments that had taken place that will impact Vincentians in their pockets. “I want to mention in particular the results of
the election in Venezuela where a statement has been made that we need the oil for ourselves,” Eustace said. He went on to say that the current state of the Venezuelan economy is what was prompting this call. But Eustace went on further with a previous pronouncement that he had made: that Venezuela was indebted to the Republic of China and the debt was to be paid by supplying the amount owed – USD 30 billion – by supplying oil. “That is putting on a heavy burden on that country, and that is why you have senators coming out making statements that they are making now,” the leader of the opposition said. “They have to cut back on everything that they were doing to be generous,” he continued. Even in Trinidad and Tobago, the government was being forced to cut back on social programmes because of the low prices of oil on the world market, Eustace

For many years, she had dreamed of living in the Caribbean. In 1954, she fulfilled that dream by moving to St. Vincent and the Grenadines where she set up a general medical practice and married a planter, Ian (Sonny) Child. They lived near Georgetown on an estate called Grand Sable, until the early 70s when she moved to her present home called The Brae, located on the hillside across from Young Island. Last week Wednesday, on December 29th, Dr. Vivian Child celebrated her 95th birthday at a ‘Tea” at Beachcombers Hotel, surrounded by a small group of special friends and her long time medical colleague, His Excellency Sir Frederick

Dr. Child also has connections to THE VINCENTIAN newspaper, where in the early 80s she wrote a column ”Round and About” as well as a series of articles “Kingstown, Past and Present”, which were illustrated with detailed pen and ink drawings. She coined the phrase “The City of Arches” to describe Kingstown, and that became the title of her best-selling book, “City of Arches, Memoirs of an Island Capital”. LIME Sharing Smiles in the Owia Community THE MEMBERS of the Owia Government School Brownie Pack were all smiles at their Christmas party, as they were surprised with gifts from telecommunications provider LIME. LIME began its relationship with the community of Owia a couple of years ago, when they completed their series of town hall meetings in various communities throughtout St Vincent and the Grenadines. Ms Candie Pollard-Sutherland, Pack Leader, was very grateful for the support. “I was so happy when Ms Williams said she would provide gifts for all the kids. The party would not have been the same without LIME’s generousity. The kids were excited and very grateful,” she remarked.

LIME Marketing Manager Nikala Williams said, “When I received the request from Ms Sutherland, I was thrilled for the opportunity to give a pleasant surprise to these hardworking kids. Just seeing the smiles on faces of these children was thanks enough. Its moments like these that I cherish most at LIME — the genuine smiles we receive from children, elderly, needy, orphans, shutins….priceless!”

Dear George,
am guessing that your husband has some unresolved sexual issues, and unfortunately took the wrong approach in handling it. This is a good time to do some stock-taking. Have a heart to heart talk with your husband. Let him know that, while you are not excusing his action, you are willing to work on the relationship by having him table the issues he might be having with you.
Sharing your views openly with each other is to set yourselves on a path towards a a workable compromise, as a first step toward rekindling the missing sparks from the marriage. Both of you should have more than a good idea as to what needs to be done. Give it a chance.

the middle Dear George, MY PARENTS have not spoken to each other for over two weeks now. That’s since they had a falling out over something involving another person. Both of them are accusing the other of cheating, and there seems to be no end to this cold war between them. I am a fifth former at a secondary school, and this is killing me, and preventing me from concentrating. I am fearful that my parents will eventually divorce, and should that happen, I do not know what I will do. Right now, I feel so lost, and no one is telling me anything!
Nothing to fear Dear George,
Hurt and confused.
I AM 4FT 2INCHES tall and my girlfriend is little shorter than I am. We are madly in love and have been for the past 18 months. We are seriously thinking of getting married, but our friends are telling us it is not such a good idea to get married and have children, because our children would be extremely short, and that would not be fair to them. We do not think that way at all, but somehow it is bothering us that everywhere we go, people are telling us just that. What do you think?
Dear Hurt and confused,
I appreciate the concern that you have, but I must tell you that what is important here is that both of you honestly love and trust each other, and hope to get married for the right reasons. Children that are born into a happy family where parents love and care for them unconditionally, definitely have a head start in life. Listen to your hearts and not to bystanders who may not necessarily have your best interest at heart.
Thank you for sharing. Your parents have been so busy thinking about themselves and taking shots at each other, that they failed to see that you are exposed to the crossfire. It will be good to let them know how this is affecting you, and what your fears are. Encourage them to speak to each other and deal with the issue like the adults that they are. Meanwhile, you can go and get some professional support from a counsellor who could guide you towards handling the stress that is resulting from all of this. Most likely your counselor will ask to see your parents, and this will open a window for them to bring the problem they are having with each other, out in the open.

Tribute
LIKE MANY OF Us here today, I got to know ‘Lasky’ through work, where he was a helpful colleague, and I know I speak for all of his co-workers when I say how very much he will be missed. I’m glad to have this opportunity to say a few words about Lasky. Mr. Alascus Montero Adamskie Clarke, better known as ‘Lasky’, was employed at Trinity School of Medicine in October 2013 as a Driver, and was very soon after promoted to the Supervisory post he held until his death. In fact, he was promoted before he completed his probationary period. ‘Lasky’ was one of our model employees. He was always helpful, polite and punctual. He was the first person to arrive on the compound every morning. In fact, Trinity security would look forward to seeing ‘Lasky’ drive past them early every morning, flashing his ID and
his radiant smile. One of the best things about having ‘Lasky’ as a colleague was that he was always prepared to give you a hand — something I myself had come to be thankful (for) on numerous occasions, and I know I’m not alone in that regard. Even though he was employed in the transportation department, he did most of the maintenance work, assumed security responsibilities when needed after 4pm, and always lent a hand in the housekeeping department. Just having ‘Lasky’ around made you feel better. Whatever the challenge, he was there and we all got to know his quick smile. ‘Lasky’ never forgot to thank people. Even on his sick bed he thanked everyone who visited him- all the Doctors and nurses. On Wednesday 16th December 2015, ‘Lasky’ called
me at 9;30 pm to ask where I was. I responded by saying at school. Next question was, “Is Dr. Jack with you?” I responded by saying, “No, but security Butler is nearby.” ‘Lasky’ requested to see me before he fell asleep. I quickly left my office and went to the hospital, only to find out that he played a trick on me to get me out of the compound because, in his mind, no one was around to keep my company. He did not forget to say, as usual, “Thanks for everything.” Anytime Dr. Jack, Mrs Browne or I had to work after hours, ‘Lasky’ never left until we left the compound for our various homes. Sometimes he dropped us home. If these ‘late days’ fell on Mondays or Fridays, he would run out for a few minutes to drop granny home from her work place, and come back for us. ‘Lasky’ loved his mom and children dearly. I checked
‘Lasky’s’ file last week and realised that he had taken only two days off during the time he spent at Trinity — one day for his daughter Ariel’s graduation and the second, a half day, for a father- son day at Luke’s school. He has left behind a very real legacy, which will affect the way we do things at Trinity for a very long time to come. On a personal level, every one of us who knew ‘Lasky’ and worked alongside him, whether things were going well or badly, will remember him with great affection. When all is said and done, however much you like your work, it’s the people that you meet there that really matter, and colleagues like ‘Lasky’ are very special; you don’t come across many of them, and when you do, they leave a lasting impression. ‘Lasky’, we are really going to miss you; you will be
Alascus Adamskie ‘Lasky’ Clarke forever in our hearts. “Thanks for everything” until we meet again. Mrs. Kaushalya Nedd, B.Sc Director, Office of the Deanery Trinity School of Medicine

Dean Mc Intosh was a very faithful, dedicated and committed Priest in the Diocese of the Windward Islands. He was always willing to go beyond the call of duty. While he was Rector of the Parish of the Holy Trinity, Georgetown, he paired up with the then Fr. Leopold Friday Priest in Charge of the Parish of St. Matthew, Biabou to carry out a Lay Training Programme for members of both Parishes. In 1996 The Rt. Rev’d Sehon Goodridge Bishop of the Windward Islands asked him to extend the Programme to the Archdeaconry of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Fr. Mc Intosh (at the time) was one of the main facilitators of the Programme in spite of the extensiveness of his ministry in the Parish of the Holy Trinity, Georgetown which extends from Mt Grenan to Fancy. Dean Mc Intosh will be
remembered for the construction of the Holy Name Anglican Church, Sandy Bay, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It is one of the two churches in the Diocese which were built after 1960. One can also recall the restoration of the Holy Trinity Parish Church and rectory during his tenure as Rector there, for over seventeen years. There were several occasions when Dean Mc Intosh risked his life to serve the people in the Parish of the Holy Trinity. He would tell stories of crossing the Rabacca Dry River when it was flowing and just making it across in the nick of time or on occasions, had to be assisted by others. Dean Mc Intosh had a great love for God and the Church: he saw himself as one called by God to mission and ministry, and executed his ministry with a deep passion. He had a love for people generally,
The Very Reverend Patrick McIntosh and particularly for the shut-ins, the aged, sick, poor and less fortunate, and he introduced a monthly service for them at the St. George’ s Cathedral several years ago. Just before his passing, he was working assiduously towards the restoration of the St. George’s Cathedral. Left to mourn are his wife Carmel and children Camille and Patrick Jr., and his son in law The Rev’d Fr. Hanif Johnson, other relatives and friends. Rest eternal grant unto him O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. The Rt. Rev’d C. Leopold Friday Bishop of the Windward Islands

Mc Kie pointed to Windwards Islands senior women and men’s Football championships hosted here as evidence of the successes. Kineke Alexander securing a bronze medal in the 400 metres in the Pan American Games staged in Toronto in July was also highlighted. Kineke’s bronze medal came on the heels of a gold medal snatched in the 200 metre at an Invitational Meet in College Station, Texas, in February. McKie noted that cricket talent was spread across the nation with Pope, a left handed opening batsman from Mt Grennan on the Windward coast, while McCoy, a left arm fast medium bowler, hails from the Central Leeward district of Buccament Bay. McKie predicted that the duo would do well, and he is looking forward to them climbing up the chain to the senior West Indies squad. The Sports Minister acknowledged the hard work and commitment that the two cricketers had put in order to have reached thus far. Member of Parliament for West St George, where the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex is located, McKie pledged his government’s commitment to working along with national sports men and women to ensure that they have “all the necessary support.” McKie thanked his parliamentary colleague Sir Louis Straker, Foreign Affairs Minister, for taking the initiative of providing the equipment for the two young cricketers. In making the presentation, Sir
Louis expressed the hope that the players “move on to greater heights.” President of the Vincentian Cricket Association Sir Louis Straker (left) presents cricket gear to Gidron Pope. Sports again IN THREE WEEKS, attention will be on the Under 19 World Cup in Bangladesh. There will be added interest for Vincentians anxious to see the exploits of Gidron Pope and Obed McCoy. The duo left here last Wednesday for Bangladesh via London, and India. That will be enough experience for them long before they settle down to the task at hand. West Indies cricket has transformed over a new landscape. The spirit of idealism and consciousness as portrayed over the generations represented by persons like Vivian Richards and Michael Holding has been supplanted by the modern day heroes like Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Keiron Pollard. In fairness to Pollard, he maintained a level of humility. Some have perhaps become drowned in the depth of liquid cash which has come their way. They have abandoned any semblance of logical reasoning with which former players were imbued. Without disregarding youngsters and their quest for innovation and their latitude for expansion, there has to be adherence to principles of justice. Persons can’t be distracted to hasten along a path of destruction. This is an age of fragility. The local season unfolds this weekend while the West Indies Under 19 begin preparation for a major showdown. One hopes that the fears displayed by the Australian squad with their withdrawal would have been farfetched. The Irish however will have been pleased with their late inclusion, and will have every licence to engage in a free for all. While the West Indies team endured the rigours of Test cricket in Australia, it was appalling to many of the Australian public that so many other potential West Indian heroes would have been in Australia enhancing their financial packets through the T.20 version. The question as to payments always surfaces, in light of the revelations of wages for Australian players compared to West Indians. There will be a settlement of the issues. West Indies players will have to focus on the returns column before paying attention to the income bracket. Not that they should be exploited, but there has to be some accountability. The West Indies Cricket Board has drawn its line on its response to the CARICOM Committee. Just like the impasse that led to the cancellation of the Indian tour, there will be more friction from the ongoing situation. CLR James’ assessment of this thing extending beyond the boundary could not be evident in more glaring fashion. People like to point fingers, and we have become used to the blame game. When anything goes wrong, the first thing to do is find someone to take responsibility. There is the Selwyn ‘Mighty Leader’ Burke composition, ‘Don’t know; not me.’ Leader is composer of other classics like ‘First time.’ St. Vincent and the Grenadines have filtered through a number of persons through the Under 19 ranks of West Indies Cricket. One of them made a belated return to the higher circles, at the distant end of his career. His consistency through the years never provided him with that breakthrough recipe until the cupboard was bare. And still Peters was not able to convince those in authority of any reason to give him an extended run. He was left to fathom that rare moment of parttime bliss. My hope is that Pope and McCoy overcome the jinx and establish themselves as regular members of the senior West Indies squad. The one way they can do that is by real performances on the field of play. Pope will have to be consistent with his runs and play his part as a team man. McCoy will have to be accurate and disciplined and put in that additional piece of preparation to make sure that he keeps up his fitness. That is the only guarantee they have of climbing up the ladder of success within the sporting and social spheres.
Gayle fined for misconduct Editor’s Note: The following is a reprint from an article that first appeared online on the BBC Sports site) WEST INDIES CRICKETER Chris Gayle has been fined A$10,000 ($7,200; £4,900) by his club for “inappropriate conduct” after he asked a TV reporter for a date in a live interview. Gayle was speaking to journalist Mel McLaughlin during a Big Bash League T20 match in Hobart on Monday. “To see your eyes for the first time is nice. Hopefully we can have a drink afterwards. Don’t blush baby,” he said. Gayle has said he is sorry, but that the reaction was “out of proportion”. Apparently making light of the episode, the cricketer later tweeted a photo of an empty bed, saying he was tired. He then said his teammate Dwayne Bravo was buying him a meal because his “pockets were empty”. He also retweeted a comment from broadcaster and cricket fan Piers Morgan, who said he was “outraged at the outrage” at Gayle being “a bit cheeky to a female TV reporter”. Gayle was answering questions from Network Ten’s McLaughlin after a match when he made the remark, which was widely condemned as sexist. The former West Indies Test captain told reporters on Tuesday: “There wasn’t anything meant to be disrespectful or offensive to Mel. If she felt that way, I’m really sorry for that. “It was a simple joke. The game was going on. Entertainment, things get out of proportion but these things happen.” McLaughlin has said his date request was “a little bit disappointing because I’m not used to seeing that”. “I don’t really want to be the subject of such conversations,” she told her network.
Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland said Gayle’s comments could be equated with workplace harassment. “It’s not a nightclub, and I think one of the things that perhaps hasn’t dawned on everyone is it’s actually a workplace,” he said. Fox Sports reporter Neroli Meadows told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that Gayle had said similar things to her and several other female reporters. “He does this constantly... He has creepy behaviour, and the way he did it to Mel was just that, and Mel knew it was going to happen,” she said. Chris Rogers, Gayle’s former captain at Sydney Thunder, accused him of being a bad influence on younger players. “This is a pattern of behaviour. If you know the guy, you see it over and over,” said Rogers. “It’s not just him, there’s a lot of this stuff in the sporting industry, and to defend it is not right at all.” ‘Out of line’ The Melbourne Renegades said his comments were “completely inappropriate and disrespectful”, and apologised to McLaughlin and to the public. “Mel is an outstanding sports presenter,” said Renegades chief executive Stuart Coventry. “We think of her very highly, and the club and players will ensure we work with her in a professional and respectful manner in future.” “We’ve had several discussions with Chris over the past day and he has acknowledged that his comments were out of line,” he said. The A$10,000 fine will be donated to the McGrath Foundation, a breast cancer charity. Network Ten Head of Sport David Barham said Gayle would no

FATHER CHARGED WITH SLAYING PREGNANT VINCENTIAN DAUGHTER by NELSON A. KING naking@verizon.net; kingnaking210@yahoo.com US CORRESPONDENT
Andrea Caruth was last seen on Sunday. Her body was discovered buried face down in the basement of her home.
POLICE IN THE BRONX, New York, late Wednesday arrested and charged 61-year-old William Caruth with the killing of his pregnant Vincentian-born daughter, and burying her body in the basement of a home they shared in the Baychester section. The New York Police Department (NYPD) said the father, who is originally from Penniston, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and reportedly a former teacher at the Dubois Government School, is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Andrea Caruth, 39, also formerly of Penniston. The motive for the slaying was not clear, police said, but New York Newsday reported late Wednesday that Andrea Caruth’s body was found partly buried in the basement of the Bronx home. Police said Andrea Caruth, who was about five months pregnant and, according to a neighbour, was expected to visit her doctor on Thursday, was last seen Sunday about 10:30 a.m. in her home.
Police discovered blood there Tuesday and brought in a cadaver dog, which alerted authorities and helped detectives find the body of a woman in a pit beneath the floor of a furnished basement apartment, according to Newsday. Andrea Caruth’s body was face down, partly covered with dirt; and the hole, which William Caruth (centre) being taken into police custody. was in a closet there was an outpouring of area, was covered with a piece Newsday said. Teacher/Businessman shot by KENVILLE HORNE
STANLEY ‘DULA’ ISAACS, a teacher at the Buccument Government School who operates a business (shop) from the ground floor of his residence in Rillan Hill, is lucky to be alive, after he was shot during an armed robbery at his business place on Monday night. Speaking from his bed at the Milton Cato memorial Hospital, Isaacs said that never in his eight years of running the business, has he ever experienced such an ordeal. Recounting what transpired on the night, he recalled packing away some LPG Cylinders and then preparing to shut up shop for
the night, when an armed, masked man entered the shop. This was around 10:00 pm, and three male customers and his three-year-old daughter were still in the shop. According to Isaacs, the masked man said something which he did not understand, and then discharged his weapon, the bullet hitting the wall of the shop. He discharged another which stuck the businessman in his leg, breaking his femur in the process. By this time, another armed man had entered the shop, and a a third stayed at the entrance. Isaacs said that the three customers were “scuffled up and beaten,” and “they lick
out one of the guy’s teeth.” The robbers then demanded money, and he directed them to a bucket in which he had put some of his day’s takings. They were, however, not content with the amount of money they found, and one of them pointed the gun towards Isaacs’ daughter, threatening to shoot her if he did not get more money. “He say, ‘Gay arwe the rest money, else me shoot yo daughter’,” Isaacs recounted. The distraught business. man explained that he had some money to purchase cylinders of LPG, and he directed the robbers to where the money was located. In total, the robbers made off with over EC$5,000, which

included two day’s earnings. He said the robbers fled in the direction of the road leading to Vermont eventually, and one more bullet was fired before they jumped into a waiting vehicle and sped away. Isaacs believes that more business persons would suffer the same fate, particularly small businesses, and he is therefore imploring them to take appropriate security measures to protect their investments. He said he was surprised Stanley Isaacs - lucky to be by the aggression of the alive. robbers, and the fact that they pointed the gun at his there and they had simply little daughter. returned to get it,” he said of “The way they acted, they the attitude of the robbers. acted as if the money was Police investigations into theirs.
