St. Clair Leacock, MP for Central Kingstown, reflected on a previous occasion when he had to fear for his life.

FOLLOWING THE TRAGIC EVENT that transpired last Saturday (December 6) evening, NDP Parliamentary Representative for Central Kingstown, St Clair Leacock, says there is more reason for him to be concerned about his safety. Leacock expressed the concern when he spoke with THE VINCENTIAN minutes following the incident when a car ploughed into a crowd, injuring several people

and killing at least one, during a New Democratic Party (NDP) meeting in Clare Valley. He followed up on Monday when he called into the New Times programme on NICE Radio, saying that he believed that the potential for the vehicle driving straight on to the hard court and on to the stage where he and other Parliamentary representatives were sitting, was grave. “In other words, those of us on that platform barely escaped a worse outcome,” Leacock said. He said that on the night of the last General Elections in 2010, he was taken off the road by the police. “I have been warned.... People’s names have been called, criminal gangs have been identified, and people knew of the potential for me getting hurt — I have received death threats,” Leacock said. He spoke of an incident when a threat was made against him by a caller who stated that he was going to

shoot the MP. “This is not a joking matter, our life is on the line,” he said. Leacock further contended that there were people wanting to take them out, and the members of the party ought to take a defensive position.

No accident So incensed was Leacock, that he declared that last Saturday’s incident was no accident!! He reasoned that if a vehicle is in good working order — that is the headlights were working, horn and brakes functioning, and is involved in a collision, the expected reaction from the driver will be remorse. “That will be the spontaneous reaction — not to escape to be apprehended. And we didn’t have that, we didn’t have lights, we didn’t have horn, we didn’t have brakes, and we didn’t have expressions or actions of remorse or sorrow,” Leacock said. He said that he was among those who were of the view that the incident was an attempt to hurt those people present at the public meeting. Continued on Page 3.

FRANCIS MAY CONSIDER LEGAL ACTION SENATOR JULIAN FRANCIS, General Secretary of the Unity Labour Party (ULP), says that he is contemplating whether he should take civil action against individuals who may have defamed him. Francis made the comment while speaking on his weekly Star Radio programme ‘Unity Speaks’, on Tuesday night. He said that within hours following the fatal accident at Clare Valley, a number of people and NDP Parliamentarians openly expressed the view that they believed that what took place was no accident, and that it was set up by Francis and Leader of the ULP , Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves. The accident to which Francis

Back then, Gonsalves said that Eustace’s call for peace was “wholly unacceptable”, as he had not condemned the attack, and referred to Eustace as a hypocrite. “I am mindful of my attempt the last time when I tried to get him to talk, he was very dismissive — all I asked for was a joint statement,” Eustace told THE VINCENTIAN, following the incident when a vehicle (P7516) drove into a crowd of people attending the NDP’s public meeting in Clare Valley, injuring ten and killing one — Edgar Cruickshank. The Leader of the Opposition further stated that he did not want to see similar incidents occur, adding that he did not regard what transpired to be an accident.

“We need a swift and thorough investigation into this matter, devoid of any political interference,” Eustace said in a statement he made on the New Times radio programme on Monday. He appealed for calm, saying that he was aware that people would be emotional after witnessing the tragedy.

“But I urge you to remain calm while this investigation is being conducted,” he said. Antwone Anthony, a 39year-old self-employed resident of Clare Valley, was on Tuesday charged with, among other things, being the driver of motor vehicle P7516 and causing the death of Cruickshank.

Venezuela to cut oil shipments?

CARIBBEAN COUNTRIES who benefit from the cutrate oil from Venezuela, under the Petrocaribe arrangement, have now to brace themselves as shipments (of oil) from that South American country continue to slide. This as Venezuela faces up to decreasing oil prices on the world market and what is described as a spiraling economic crisis. According to an article appearing in the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal, Venezuela’s shipments of oil to PetroCaribe beneficiary countries decreased by 20% through October 2014, compared with the same period last year. If Venezuela shipments of cut rate oil to small CARICOM countires are included in any plan Venezuela might have to decrease shipment of cut rate oil under the PetroCaribe arrangement, those countries could find themselves hard pressed to continue to fund a number of social and infra-structure projects. For close to a decade, at least the 13 beneficiaries of Venezuela’s generosity have depended primarily on the oil and the attendant allowance under Pterocaribe, to finance social spending and infrastructure. In return, those countries have supported Venezuela with diplomatic and political support regionally and internationally. Programme/projects

(Photo: Ezequiel Mibaya/Wall Street Journal) funded by/under the Petrocaribe arrangement includes: schools, businesses, small farms and even a zoo in Jamaica; textbooks, free lunches for children, sports facilities, road and transportation (buses) in Grenada; food distribution and monthly allowances for the poor in Haiti; fiscal support in the Dominican Republic; and airport development in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. But while the Wall Street Journal reports on the likelihood of Venezuela cutting oil shipments, the Venezuelan government has made no public mention of cutbacks to PetroCaribe or other oilaid programmes, such as the arrangement to ship 99,000 barrels a day to Cuba in exchange for doctors who work in Venezuelan slums. To the contrary, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Rafael Ramírez recently reiterated his government’s “strong

(Photo: Caribbean Journal) commitment to continue the PetroCaribe initiative, under any circumstances.” But a quiet shift is taking place as evidenced, according to the Wall Street Journal, by: the withdrawal of Honduras and Guatemala from Petrocaribe as Caracas toughened the terms; the fact that Bolivia and Paraguay didn’t receive any cut-rate oil shipments last year; and the halving of shipments to Argentina. In the circumstances, the IMF is warning regional governments

“that the likelihood of disruption is more likely than it was because Venezuela is under greater pressure,” said Adrienne Cheasty, deputy director of the IMF’s Western Hemisphere unit. Under PetroCaribe, participating countries paid a fraction of market price upfront for oil, deferring the full cost through long-term loans with 25-year maturities, and interest rates as low as 1%. Within Venezuela, Opposition parties have demonised PetroCaribe as giving away Venezuela’s financial resources when the people of the country need greater support. The decline in government revenues, resulting from a loss of almost US$40 a barrel for oil, will put severe strain on the Government of President Nicolas Maduro, and will embolden the Opposition to further paint the picture of PetroCaribe as giving away money that should be spent on the needs of the Venezuelan people. That is a huge political difficulty for Maduro.” Sir Ronald Saunders. “What does Venezuela gain (from the sale of Domincan Republic’s debt under Petrocaribe)? It gets US$ 1.7 billion today in cash, and nothing down the line, it buys time without adjusting the economy and maybe losing an election. “This proves how idiotic the whole Petrocaribe thing was, except to buy votes at international venues. Venezuela, which has been issuing debt at yields to maturity of 10-15%, was lending money to countries at 2%, when most of these countries pay less than Venezuela in the international markets.” (The Devil’s Excrement Blog)

Venezuela to sell PetroCaribe debts A NUMBER OF NORTH AMERICAN journals and blogs are reporting that the crisis-hit Venezuelan government is looking to raise cash to offset plunging oil revenue, by selling part of its accounts receivable associated with its PetroCaribe oil supply programme, at discounted prices. According to reports, transactions currently under discussion currently on the way could see Goldman Sachs, a leading global investment banking, securities and investment management firm, buying the Dominican Republic´s $4bn debt that it owes Venezuela´s state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela (PdV), for $1.7bn. The Dominican Republic, one of the main beneficiaries of Venezuela´s PetroCaribe regional oil supply programme, has accumulated debt of about $7bn plus over $4bn of PetroCaribe debt, totaling $11bn. In short, the deal will mean that Venezuela/PdV gets $1.7bn in cash now and removes $4bn of Dominican Republic PetroCaribe debt, a debt

observers say it would have been hardpressed to collect. The transaction would improve PdV’s cash balance. Still, it would not put more than a dent in its overall financial debt, which is now about $50bn, not including debts owed to contractors and suppliers, joint venture partners and pending compensation awards associated with international arbitration. There are also reports that say Goldman Sachs is also discussing the possible discounted purchase of Jamaica’s $3bn in PetroCaribe debt to Venezuela. PdV and Goldman Sachs declined to comment. If the reports about Venezuela’s sale of PetroCaribe debt are true, then it substantiates that the Venezuela’s oildrive economy is in dire straits. PetroCaribe, founded in 2005, allows member countries to buy Venezuelan crude and oil products on preferential terms, including barter arrangements. Under the programme, PdV supplies a total of around 200,000 b/d of crude and

Crime Prevention is everybodyÊs business

Christopher Benjamin, Assistant Commissioner of Police, in charge of operations, has assured that there will be an increased presence of uniformed officers on the beat. Stories by HAYDN HUGGINS AS CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES heighten, the RSVG Police Force is urging citizens to cooperate with the police to ensure a safe and peaceful season. “Crime prevention is everybody’s business, and we cannot depend on the police to

do it all. We have to work together. The police are here to provide a service, but without the public’s help, our efforts will be futile,” Christopher Benjamin, Assistant Commissioner of Police, in charge of operations, told THE VINCENTIAN on Tuesday. Benjamin said that as Christmas activities heighten, persons would observe an increased presence of uniformed police officers. He assured that, “police generally will be on the ground to ensure that locals as well as visitors are safe, and secure.” However, the Assistant Commissioner pointed out that the public also has a significant role to play in ensuring its own safety. He is appealing to persons to secure their homes when they leave, and to inform a neighbour before leaving. “Make sure all windows are secured, even if they are burglar barred,” Benjamin advised, adding, “If you lose your keys, change your locks.” He cautioned persons not to leave valuables in vehicles; not to walk around with excess money; not to expose large

sums of money in the public; and to avoid carrying money in back pockets. For those who like to carry handbags loosely over their shoulders, the operations chief advises, “Walk with it tucked under the armpit, or keep it in front of you where you can have it under proper control” He stressed that windows should not be left open at nights for ventilation, even if they are burglar barred. While the top brass officer disclosed that to date there were no reports of counterfeit money in circulation, he is urging citizens to be on the lookout as this offence is sometimes prevalent at this time of the year. He also reiterated a police warning for persons to refrain from playing the illegal ‘3 card’ game. For further sensitization on safety measures, Benjamin is inviting locals and visitors to participate in the annual Crime Prevention showcase to be held in front of the Central Police Station today (Friday). The event will feature security items and devices, and police will be on hand to answer questions.

Editorial Petrocaribe: Facing up to reality HERE IS WHAT THE VINCENTIAN carried in its editorial column as earlier as November 7, 2014. “Given what obtains with the price of oil, and Venezuela’s own admission that it would be hard-pressed to fulfil its local and regional commitments if the price fell below US$90.00 a barrel, is it pre-mature to ponder on the future of PetroCaribe? “As we write, the price of oil has fallen to a frightening US$79.04; definitely not a price with which Venezuela would feel re-assured. “Studies indicate that the cost to Venezuela from the PetroCaribe programmes is about 4000,000 barrels of oil a day (300,000 going to Cuba alone) or an estimated US$20 billion a year. In addition, it is advanced that the petroleum subsidies that the country allows incountry amount to some US$20 billion. “Don’t expect that the regime in Venezuela will cut these subsidies. That being the case, should we, SVG, which enjoys concessions on oil under PetroCaribe, not brace ourselves for Venezuela easing out of PetroCaribe? Not that it has said or given indication that it would. “But, in a situation of economic challenges Venezuelans are asked to endure as a result of a fall in oil production and price, we cannot expect them to understand, far less tolerate forever, how and why their country chooses to subsidise Petrocaribe recipient nations to the tune of (an estimated) US$7 billion a year. “The fact is that the balance of payments of the Caribbean economies have become dependent on subsidies under the PetroCaribe arrangement. However, in spite of concessionary prices for the oil they receive from Venezuela — $40 to $50.00 a barrel up front, with the rest payable as a loan — none of the recipient nations have been able to achieve any sustained surplus on their balance of payments. “And given the recipient nations’ own challenges, they could well find themselves hard-pressed to service the loans. “So, are we prepared to see beyond PetroCaribe, or is this pondering pie in the sky?”

Picking up where we left off Much water (or is it oil) has flowed under the bridge. The situation regarding Venezuela’s capacity to continue to fulfil its PetroCaribe obligations arrangement, has all but worsened, if not in exact terms, in ways that are more than mere conjecture. We have learned since our Editorial of November 7 that oil shipments from Venezuela have decreased and, in some cases, have actually ceased since that country began experiencing challenges with its oil production. These challenges surfaced long before the more recent downward spiral in oil prices. Simple Mathematics speak to Venezuela having to sell more oil at a real (but reduced) world market price, regardless of how low that price might be, in order to generate revenue to meet its own economic and fiscal obligations now, not at some later date which is allowed under the terms of PetroCaribe. Now more than ever, Caribbean territories that have benefited from the oil concessionary arrangements under PetroCaribe, have to stand up and count their chickens. All CARICOM countries, except Trinidad and Tobago, an oil producing country, and Barbados, will be severely affected should Venezuela cut oil shipments and/or move to revise the terms of the original PetroCaribe protocol. What is to stop Venezuela from calling in the debts accumulated since PetroCaribe was established in 2005? Even if Venezuela is able to ‘sell’ some of is PetroCaribe debt, how long will it be able to endure the obvious loss(es) it will incur in doing so? It is perhaps instructive to note that while PetroCaribe can be described as a commercial initiative, it is in equal sense and representation, Venezuela’s Bolivian Revolution’s anti-US, socialist position in geo-politics. The purpose may be to provide some level of energy security outside of what the Capitalist countries and agents offer. And if the truth be told, ideology aside, the oil-driven protocol is the first and only one of its kind, with the noble aim of engendering social development among less developed countries. However, nothing is everlasting — not even oil. And the world, as ‘donkey’ would say, isn’t level. Venezuela still has to operate within what is in the main a capitalist driven world economy in which it will find few real friends. As much as it would have found political allies among some Caribbean and Latin American nations, it would be folly on the part of these nations to have stacked, and continue to stack, all their odds on the same hand. There is need for serious reflection on a reality without PetroCaribe, not later, not sooner, but now.

The Clare Valley killing incident, or national crisis I WILL TRY TO INJECT SANITY and objectivity in a most tragic episode that took place at Clare Valley last Saturday evening, December 6th. Briefly, the NDP public meeting which was held there was brutally cut short when a motor-car ran off the road, on to the area where the crowd had gathered, and mowed them down, resulting in the death of Edgar Cruickshank, and multiple injuries to about a dozen others, of which a half were hospitalised, two or three gravely injured. The troubling question has been whether it had been an accident simpliciter, or whether it was as a result of a deliberate act to create mayhem among the political crowd gathered, most of them NDP supporters. On the one side is the driver who held that he lost control of the vehicle, which gathered tremendous speed, causing it to plunge into the crowd, doing much damage. On the other hand, these questions have been asked. Why were headlights not on, brakes not applied, and an attempt not made to steer the car into a gutter or embankment away from the people? Of course, this query assumes that the lights, brakes and horn were tested after the accident and found to be functional. There are other pertinent questions: Is it true that the said car made two or three rounds prior to the fatal crash? Less importantly, is it true that its licence plates, even if genuine, showed that fees were owed for several years? By the way, cannot its true owner be traced by indices on the engine, etc? Plausible answers and explanations might be supplied to every one of them. That is why Arnhim Eustace, leader of the NDP, who had been addressing the meeting at the time of the close-by calamity, has urged everyone to be calm, constrained and cooperative, and let the police do all the preliminary work in the interest of Justice. Two of Ralph’s comrades, Ex-Senator Ronald Marks, whose ex Registrar wife recently received a slap on the wrist for grave wrongdoing, and Senator Julian Francis, who is the de facto Deputy Prime Minister, have both published that the incident was nothing but an unfortunate accident. Such statements issued as from “on high,” coupled with the pharisaic advice from Fitz Bramble so far removed from the theatre of action, really riled St Clair Leacock who fired a short blast in reply. Such a reaction was seized upon by Elson Crick as highlighting an exploitable difference between Arnhim Eustace and his Deputy. But the two see eye-to-eye on most fundamental questions, with Arnhim serving as the brains and Leacock acting as the arm, as Friday is the heart and Ferdinand the soul of their team. To return to last Saturday evening’s happening, the driver could plead drunkenness, which is not a defence if it was self-imposed to give “Dutch Courage”. It can

be argued that no one embarked on such a crime would take along a four-year old son. And an attempted escape by the driver could have been caused by sheer panic at the shocking enormity of the deed. But details concerning the foregoing are all left to the lawyers, if at all warranted. It has been said that Cruikshank went to the meeting late, after a car had been sent by the NDP to collect him. Apparently, he attended against the wishes of his family. This is probably true because I have knowledge that he married one of the Jacks, my own family, who remained Labour Party supporters from morning. In fact, ‘Crooky’ and I used to have fiery arguments over party politics which somehow warmed our social friendship based on our love for cricket, of which he was a hard-hitting batsman and excellent fieldsman in the national side of the early 1960s. It really is sad that, instead of supporting the Eustace stand on nonintervention, and giving the police a free run to carry out the investigations, Ralph, who has been out of SVG, has joined his comrades in holding that the incident is indeed an accident, and, further, that Edgar Cruickshank was a ULP key supporter up to the time of his death. So, we are back to square one, with the expression of views expressed by the ULP political directorate without benefit of an independent enquiry. It seems that Ralph has entered the last stage of one-manism which is falling victim to his own propaganda. In his heyday, he manufactured and controlled the flow of all propaganda. Today, the propaganda has developed a momentum of its own which sweeps away its own author. We are approaching the worst case scenario in which the tail wags the dog. Ralph, who was removed from the scene of the carnage, being outside of SVG, has simply accepted hook, line and sinker, the rancid opinion of his men on the spot, Julian and company, who have axes to grind in this political miasma in which there may be much “more in the mortar than the pestle”. The net effect is to add much confusion to the complexity of events. In the circumstances, one wonders what about the fate of the enquiry which could now be compromised if it responds to the signal sent by the Prime Minister’s public utterances of his views. Last week, I had promised an article on the role of Jomo Thomas. It is more urgently required as the latest happenings relate to South Leeward for which Jomo is the ULP candidate, and the locus in quo is Clare Valley about which Jomo seems to utter opinions not liked by his party. And there is controversy that the dead Cruickshank had withdrawn his support from the ULP Party owing to its choice of candidate. The spotlight needs to be focussed on Jomo to clarify matters. We will have to wait for the break of the New Year when indeed we may get something new.

Charles told the truth I WANT to say from the get go, that I believe everything Cecil Charles said in your article carried last week is the truth. I don’t think Mr. Charles, whom I don’t know, would have gone to the lengths he did, if he was standing on shaky ground. I, therefore, conclude that like the man said, he was standing up for principle and therefore, had no reason to lie about the situation — whether a little white lie or a big lie. Again, my old friend De Comrade and his new found ‘comrades’ he calls the ULP, have found themselves on the wrong end of a sticky stick. Maybe it is that they are at both ends since they are also the ones pushing the stick. How on earth could a Minister of Government be so brazen? What is this Keith Joseph, whom I don’t know, doing that is so hurtful to the Minister? Did Charles do anything that brought the Sports Council into disrepute? How could De Comrade have one of his ministers behaving in this manner? Then again, example is the best teacher, eh Comrade. I said that I believe Mr. Charles told nothing but the truth, so help him God. In that light, I have to wonder if principle gone through the door and has been replaced by blind political allegiance. If those men (and women?) who make up the Sports Council had any backbone, they would have resigned on principle, given the degree to which the Minister of Sport interfered. Then again, I suppose they are enjoying the perks of their lives. I tell you boy, this political thing ‘air have no hope’. Ah wonder how the party feel doing Cecil that when his brother, Elvis, whom I don’t know, stick up in their bosom?

The corruption issue; the ULP administration vindicated The issue In the year 2014, the opposition NDP embarked on a crusade of complaints against the ULP administration led by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, claiming that the government was corrupt, and that the ULP was doing nothing to address the situation. In fact, the NDP held a march in Kingstown to highlight their calls for Comrade Ralph to “ring the bell”, for elections in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. They used a calypso penned by Patches Knights to try to whip up support for their “anticorruption” march and rally. As it turned out, the attendance at that event “flattered to deceive”. The NDP could not muster more than 300 persons at that rally, despite the fact that they control the Kingstown seats and South Leeward. It was at that rally that the member for Central Kingstown, St.Clair Leacock, a vice president for the NDP, declared that his party will not cooperate with the ULP administration, until there is fresh general elections in the country. This of course is a nonstarter, and only showed the continuation of the lack of patriotism by the Eustace led bunch. The NDP has been making these unfounded charges in relation to corruption from the time they lost power in 2001. Readers will of course recall the many corruption charges that were laid at the feet of the NDP, and which they failed to answer. These include the purchase of cheap government lands, the misuse of government vehicles, and the sweet heart mortgages at the then National Commercial Bank.

government ministers, or state agencies who have committed acts of official corruption. So far, Mr. Eustace has been silent on this matter and never provided the evidence requested. Here and there, some civil servants have been involved in “offences against State property”, and all such cases have been investigated by the relevant authority. In one case, a matter with a middle level civil servant was heard in the courts, but was discontinued due to a lack of evidence. In other cases, civil servants were reprimanded and in one case, demoted. It is work like this that will strengthen the case that there is no official corruption in the ULP administration, that no ULP government Minister has bought State lands cheap, nor abused the State vehicles, or got preferential treatment at the Bank of St.Vincent and the Grenadines, where the government still has shares. When these activities are reviewed by independent private international agencies, they result in kudos for the ULP administration, hence the high ranking, where this country is placed 29th in the world, and 7th in the Caribbean and Latin American region. In the letter to Arnhim Eustace, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves outlined 26 new procedures, laws, and regulations adopted by the ULP administration, to reduce the level of corruption in the State. These include measures to make our passport more secure, and changes to existing laws to The 2014 Transparency International Report ensure that culprits do not escape, when they commit felonies related to Over the last six years or so, a corruption. number of private international Also in that letter, Prime Minister organizations have given this country Gonsalves pointed out sixteen cases of high praises for its work in a number of official corruption that the NDP critical areas. Clare Valley incident - a national tragedy At about 10:30 p.m. on Sat, Dec 6, 2014, at a New Democratic Party (NDP) public meeting at the Clare Valley hard court, a dark blue 4-door motor vehicle, bearing registration number P7516, drove directly into the crowded meeting space, pinning five attendees under a parked motor vehicle on which they were leaning, as well as impacting at least five others. When the vehicle rested, at least one person, a male, was seen to have disembarked. That person fled the scene, but was apprehended by police. He remains in custody. Witnesses confirm the vehicle was heard to be revving before ploughing into the crowd; its headlights were turned off; and that the vehicle had driven past the public meeting twice before the incident. Ten persons, including a child, were taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) by medical, police and private transportation. Mr. Edgar Cruickshank, who was among persons pinned under the car, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, just past midnight, despite the efforts of medical personnel. Cruickshank had recently begun campaigning with MP for South Leeward, Nigel ‘Nature’ Stephenson, and his presence at the public meeting was acknowledged by MP Stevenson when he addressed the meeting. The NDP extends condolences to the bereaved widow and family of Mr. Cruickshank, and wishes a speedy and full recovery to all who suffered injury, physical and mental.

Statement by the Hon. Arnhim Eustace The events of Saturday 6th December 2014 are of national not just partisan significance. I do not endorse the notion that what occurred is yet another battle in the political war between the NDP and the ULP. What occurred on December, Saturday 6th is an affront to all the people and the nation of St Vincent and the Grenadines. I say that St Vincent and the Grenadines will not tolerate any attack on long entrenched freedoms, be those freedoms constitutionally derived or of the sacred God-given right. Each of us is bestowed by God with the liberty to choose. Mr. Edgar Cruickshank made what would be his final choice in the days before his death. He made that choice and the reasons therefore, known to Vincentians of late. While in fact he has been silenced, his story shall be told, and his message shall be delivered. We need a swift and thorough investigation into this matter, devoid of political interference, and the investigation has started. I appeal to all our citizens, every one of you, to remain calm. I know we all have our emotions, but I urge you to remain calm while this investigation is being conducted, and we will push for a very swift and comprehensive investigation into this matter. I know that there are a lot of feelings out there; a lot of emotions running at this point in time. But our objective must be to get to the bottom of this issue which has serious implications for the nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, very serious implications. So my fellow citizens, I beseech you to remain calm.

The Hon. Nigel Stephenson remembers Mr. Cruickshank The nature of Vincentian politics has always been adversarial, and that reality was reinforced when I entered the political arena in 2005, as the NDP candidate for the constituency of South Leeward. I did not hear the name Edgar Cruickshank prior to my candidacy, but I soon found out that he had tremendous influence in the constituency of South Leeward. I first encountered him in a small cook shop in Questelles. I was buying lunch for some of my friends, and he approached me to have a drink with him, and we had a short political discussion. It dawned on me, there and then, that I had a formidable political ‘adversary’, but only as it related to the politics of the day. He and I maintained a cordial relationship over the years . That relationship blossomed further after David Browne was unceremoniously removed as Senator. One day, I was in Kingstown, wearing a bright yellow T-shirt, and Mr. Cruickshank shouted across the street to me, “Nature, I want one of those jerseys, and you must write on it, ‘I am a Nature man now’!” On October, 25th 2014, I received a telephone number that was sent by Mr. Edgar Cruickshank. He wanted me to contact him. I was initially hesitant. However, two days later, I gave Mr. Cruickshank a call. He answered promptly, and during the call, I received the assurance that he had changed his allegiance, and was now supporting me. Further, he was going to join forces with me to ensure that we got rid of ‘Putin’ and ‘Stalin’, the two power houses of the Unity Labour Party (ULP). Together we developed a methodical campaign strategy that would have successfully won over a number of ULP supporters to the NDP, particularly in the Leeward constituencies. Interestingly, I received a call from Mr. Cruickshank almost two weeks ago, and in his usual way of referring to me, he quipped, “My Rep. you have Ebola?” I smiled and replied, “To the best of my knowledge no, no one in St. Vincent has Ebola.” Mr. Cruickshank then said to me that ‘Putin’ had called him and said in, very strong language, that he had heard he was riding out in my vehicle, among other things. I last spoke to Mr. Cruickshank on Saturday (December 6) afternoon. For me, it was an honour to see Mr. Cruickshank at the public meeting in Clare Valley. Without calling his name, I gave special recognition to him, which he graciously acknowledged. Within forty minutes of our exchange, tragedy struck, resulting in the death of Mr. Edgar Cruickshank, and injuries to a number of other supporters of the NDP. It is a continuing nightmare - one from which I wish I would awaken. But the event still flashes before my eyes, especially in light of the fact that innocent people were lying helpless on the ground, including my political adversary turned political ally. May his soul rest in peace.

Politics trumps common sense LAST SUNDAY MORNING, I woke up to the sad news that Edgar ‘Cookie’ Cruickshank died from injuries sustained after a vehicle crashed into an opposition meeting at Clare Valley. The reaction of many was swift and condemnatory. An accusatory finger was pointed at the leadership of the governing Unity Labour Party. Shaken by the very disturbing turn of events, I opted for the following statement: ‘While I don't have all the facts surrounding the incident of last evening at Clare Valley, the unfolding tragedy is horrible and unspeakable. It brought death, pain and suffering . I express my total and complete condolences to the family of Mr. Edgar Cruickshank. I also express sincerest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who were injured. In times like these, the pain and sorrow are not only shared, they are multiplied. Nothing short of a thorough investigation into the cause or causes of this incident will suffice.’ I cannot speak for others, but the events of last Saturday are truly surreal. As fate would have it, Edgar Cruickshank, a renowned stalwart of the ULP, is declared by the Opposition candidate for the area to be in the thick of the crowd, not as an adversary, but a supporter. The opposition candidate, who on other occasions spoke of looking for a place in the constituency to bury his challenger, spoke much to the crowd’s amusement, about finding the right spot, and was only now thinking about how deep to dig the hole. Within minutes after the Mr. Stephenson’s funeral dirge, destruction struck. A vehicle rushed down the hill, crashed into the crowds, killing Mr. Cruickshank, and injuring many others. Among those with serious injuries is a young man with two broken legs. The pain and suffering were visible. Emotions are still raw. In this very charged political atmosphere, even anger is understandable. Therefore, the unfolding events demand tact, intelligence, patience, caution, moderation and considered speech. For the most part, the political opposition and its propagandists fell woefully short. They were intent on feeding red meat to their supporters.. Without a shred of evidence, we are told that the driver of the car is a known activist for the governing party. Accident is dismissed as the cause of the tragedy, and nefarious thoughts and deeds are laid at the feet, hands and brain of the governing leadership. I was provocatively asked ‘Jomo, who is next?’, and whether I had masterminded the sordid affair. In the immediate aftermath of the crash, wild speculation was fed by many, including some at the very top of the leadership of the New Democratic Party. On a visit to the injured at the hospital last Sunday, I ran into a member of the parliamentary opposition, who took my outstretched hand and blurted out “Jomo, Ralph Gonsalves is evil.’ I was struck, and asked if he was implicating that PM Gonsalves was instigator of the events that led to the Clare Valley tragedy. The official backed away from such implication, but it is known that officials of the opposition made similar statements immediately after the incident, and particularly at the hospital where the

injured were rushed and a rowdy crowd gathered. These statements should be rejected by all responsible citizens. These kinds of statements, without clear evidence pointing to a conspiracy or active political involvement of persons should be swiftly condemned. In times like these, politics tends to trump common sense. Those who point to a political connection cite all manner of coincidences, but sternly reject the notion of accident. They claim that too many things are aligned. Mr. Cruickshank made his first political outing at an opposition rally; a vehicle with no lights approaches; driver loses control and slams into opposition supporters, killing Mr. Cruickshank. Assassination, some screamed. I am yet to hear a plausible explanation as to why the ULP will target a 79 year old supporter who is alleged to have turned against it. Why target Mr. Cruickshank at an opposition meeting? No explanation is offered for why the driver will strap his four year old son into a vehicle about to be used in a ‘suicide’ mission. Why recruit a person who lives a few yards from the crash site to be the suicide commando? The most important of all these questions remains unanswered by those who seek to gain political mileage out of this very sad development. What does the Unity Labour Party have to gain from driving a car into a political meeting of the political opposition? There is absolutely nothing to be gained by plotting death and destruction of your political opponents in a competitive democracy with periodic elections. Only a political activist, bent on committing suicide, and crippling his party’s electoral chances will think of and carry out such an attack. There is no evidence at all that the ULP leadership is about to commit political suicide. The party is currently activating its base through very popular constituency council meetings and candidate selection. The party is busily preparing its machinery for an election that will take it into a fourth term. Why would it risk damage to its reputation and chance for re-election by plotting and executing such a dastardly act? These are the ideas and questions that should occupy the minds of all reasonable, rational and logical thinkers. To plot and execute for political purposes what occurred last Saturday is to take us to a new low, to the adoption of an alien culture and style of resolving political differences. We are not there. There is no such manifestation of unspeakable violence in the English speaking Caribbean. I doubt we will ever get there. Therefore, those who make such insidious claims in a crude attempt to exploit the people’s emotions, are deserving of our people’s swiftest condemnation and rejection. The politics of emotions can take us so far. Let us commit to engaging our people’s brain. SVG’s future depends on such engagement.

V Abort Argyle – it is sucking the blood out of the economy 12. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2014. THE VINCENTIAN

Views

WORK COMMENCED on the Argyle airport project in 2006, and eight years later, 2014, it is still far from being complete. The Argyle airport project has been a colossal mistake from day one. It is clear to anyone who sees the muddy eyesore, that the airport will not work. Over $700 million have been wasted on the Argyle project and many millions more will be wasted over the next 4 years of works there, unless there is a change to a Green government. The Argyle airport is sucking the blood out of the SVG economy. SVG Green Party is calling on the people to vote Green Party at the next election to abort the Argyle airport, and kick-start the economy and creation of thousands of new jobs. The ULP government has lost its way; it seems to be prioritising building an airport for tourists, and has forgotten about the needs of its people. A government’s role is to serve the needs of its people

by providing jobs, a strong economy and a safe society. The ULP regime has failed in this in every way: unemployment is high; the economy is dangerously weak; and there is a high level of crime in SVG. Both the ULP and NDP regimes have pledged to continue with the Argyle airport, but this will be to the detriment of Vincentians’ needs. Thousands of families in SVG are suffering; they have no mains electricity and water, and their children go hungry. We cannot wait 4 years while a government wastes millions of dollars more on Argyle airport, and then finally wakes up and realises that Argyle airport cannot work. Our people need change now. Our people need jobs now. Our people need mains water and electricity now. Our people need to feed their children now. Our people need to educate their children now. Our people need better hospitals now.

Our people need a safe society now. Our people need a university now. Our people need to rise out of poverty now. Now is the time for change. Argyle airport will not work. The runway orientation has shifted anticlockwise away from the recommended 02/20 direction. This has made the strong, gusty winds at Argyle more dangerous for aircrafts. There are a number of other flight safety hazards at Argyle which make the site highly unlikely to get a licence to operate. Every minute of the day, the northern end of the runway area is being washed away by the sea. At the next election, the choice for the Vincentian people is simple: Do you want a government that ignores its people’s needs and will continue to waste millions of dollars at Argyle for the next 4 years, pushing mud in to the sea, or, do you want a government that will abort Argyle immediately, kick-start the economy and work tirelessly to create thousands of new jobs for its people? A Green government will abort the Argyle airport — it is sucking the blood out of the economy. It’s all about the economy: we need a strong economy to create jobs and improve people’s lives. The NDP has failed. The ULP has failed. Only a Green government has the ideas and ability to build a strong economy. SVG needs change. Vote Green. SVG Green Party www.svggreenparty.org

CWC-FLOW merger: No done deal Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), through its chief executive, Phil Bentley, has given a commitment to Caribbean governments and regulators, that if the company’s US$3 billion acquisition of Columbus International is approved, the enlarged CWC will not negatively impact competition in the cable and broadband markets. Bentley’s commitment comes following a meeting of CWC shareholders in London, December 5, which approved CWC’s move to acquire the holding of Columbus International Inc. (Approval by CWC shareholders is a prerequisite for any

executive decision to expand and/or divest the holding of the Company.) The comment also followed a meeting of ECTEL Council of Ministers in St. Lucia, December 4, called to discuss the referred merger. The CWC chief executive also acknowledged, inter alia, “In the Caribbean countries in which CWC and Columbus overlap– Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenada–we know that we have to work closely with governments and regulators to ensure that our customers benefit and competition is not compromised.”

Competitor’s reaction

SINCE WORD of the acquisition broke on November 6, Digicel, CWC’s biggest competitor in the Caribbean, has repeatedly stressed that approval of the transaction will provide CWC with market dominance in fixed broadband and in cable. Digicel group CEO, Colm Delves is on record as saying, “We are very pleased that the CTU has taken such a proactive stance in terms of seeking to assess properly the potential impact of this hugely significant deal on the telecommunications industry and wider economy right across the Caribbean region.” The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1989 by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ministers responsible for telecommunications, and is mandated to facilitate multi-stakeholder cooperation in the formulation of policies for the Caribbean information and telecommunications sector, and engages in capacity building activities for administrators, regulators and other

Phil Bentley, CEO of CWC, recognised that his company has to work closely with Caribbean governments and regulators. The regulator for the five Eastern Caribbean members cautioned that both CWC and Columbus may be in breach of their licences, if they engage in activities which can have the effect of unfairly preventing, restricting or distorting competition. Those ECTEL members that are affected directly by the proposed acquisition are Grenada, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and ECTEL has promised to ensure that any new licence granted will provide for fair competition. Columbus Communications Caribbean operations, which trades in the name of FLOW, is said to generate an estimated US$25 million.

SVG Association of Montreal holds elections SUNDAY DECEMBER 6 in Montreal, Canada, was a day of the freezing weather and bone-chilling wind, but this did not deter members of the St Vincent and Grenadines Association of Montreal (SVGAM) from coming out in full force to elect a new executive. After what was described as a ‘hotly’ contested election, the following persons were elected to serve on the executive for the 2014/15 term: Mr. Alfred ‘Jack’ Dear — President (reelected); ; Ms. Rosmond Ryan — Vice President (re-elected); Ms. Roxanne Cambridge - General Secretary; Ms. Jackie Parris — Assistant Secretary (re-elected); Ms. Angela Gurley — Public Relations Officer; Mr. Leo StHilaire (re-elected), Ms. Abigail Dick (re-elected) and Mr. Ambrose Hamilton — Members at Large. The positions of Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer are expected to be filled at a later date. Information reaching THE VINCENTIAN indicated that prior to the elections, there was a lively but positive discussion about where the Association was headed; a pertinent discussion in as much as 2015 will

mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Association. Although Vincentians constitute a very small percentage of Montreal’s population, the Executive says that the SVGAM has been influential in the creation of various services in the Cote des Neiges community. The 2014/15 Executive of the SVGAM (L-R): “We are perhaps Jackie Parris – Asst. Bess’s younger sister, Ingrid, and Barbara Roberts, of Rose Place, Kingstown, performed a duet with ‘Love and Joy Come to You’ and ‘Joy to the World’. “When I was small, we used to ‘Sing Out’”, Ingrid Bess recalled, as Erlene Williams-King, also of Edinboro, belched out “Away in a Manger” and “O, Holy Night.” Lovena Bynoe, of Rillan Hill, and Rosemarie Bobb-Irish, of Campden Park, Dr. Irish’s mother, also reminisced about their childhood days at Christmas, before rendering ‘O, Holy Night’. Before giving his “Christmas Speech”, UVCGB member Ralphie Cunningham looked back on his boyhood days, during the Christmas season, growing up in Barracks Village, Chateaubelair. “Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, please put a penny in the old man hat. If not a penny, a half penny will do; if not a half penny, God bless you,” said Ralphie Cunningham in a speech he often delivered during serenading with his boyhood friend and then neighbour, Nelson King, in Barracks Village, Chateaubelair. Donna Ash, of Old Montrose, Kingstown, said Christmas has always been “very special to me, because it’s my birthday,” adding that it was also “great” in her household. She recalled participating in a talent show, as a child, at the Peace Memorial Hall in Kingstown and singing “Noel”. The event was infused with jokes from Jamal Walker, of Kingstown Park; poem and speeches from Karen Charles-DeFrietas, of Biabou; poem on ‘The Birth’ by Kimberly Thompson, of Jamaica; Jim Reeves’ ‘Old Christmas Card’ from Zita Adams, of Georgetown; and carols from the Miracle Temple Senior Choir and Brooklyn’s Grace Battalion Choir, including the “Little Drummer Boy”. With callalou soup, bakes and saltfish, roti, potato pudding, slice and tart, and ginger beer and sorrel awaiting attendees, Cuffy-Murray and Claudette Thomas-Butler performed a skit in which Cuffy-Murray, acting as “Mable”, stole a “Christmas Ham”, from a boiling pot that Thomas-Butler prepared on a coal pot. UVCGB then brought the house down with a medley of carols, sending the patrons home with a rendition of ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’.

Opposition leader to ask questions in Parliament

These empty Opposition seats should Sitting of the House. Stories by DAYLE DA SILVA LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION, Arnhim Eustace, says that he has submitted questions for oral answers by the Prime Minister, during the next sitting of Parliament on December 17. He announced, during a public meeting at Clare Valley last Saturday, December 6, that he had submitted a question regarding the money owed by this country to Venezuela, under the Petrocaribe debt. Eustace did not disclose if the other members on the opposition side had also submitted questions. “I submitted a question which will be asked in the Parliament in four parts, which the Prime Minister will have to answer on the 17th of this month,” Eustace told the people of South Leeward. The opposition had refused to submit questions in Parliament as part of a planned action of non-

cooperation, in an effort to pressure the government to call general elections. Elected members on the opposition side of the House were absent during the last Sitting of the House, October 24, citing various reasons for their withdrawal, including the issue relating to be filled at the next Leon ‘Bigger Biggs’ Samuel and the ruling meted out to former Registrar of the High Court, Tamara Gibson-Marks. During a ministerial statement at the said Sitting, Dr. Gonsalves described the action as irresponsible, saying that the ‘Questions for oral answers’ segment was the most important mechanisms toward ensuring that the government was held accountable. “But they are not here asking any of them,” Gonsalves said. He went on to explain that he was going to put arrangements in place for a radio programme, which would allow the general public to interact with him, so as to get answers on issues. “Since the opposition is not here to do its duty, I am asking the people to assume that duty to ask the prime minister,” he said then. The first edition of the programme was aired last Wednesday, December3.

Eustace disputes PM’s figure THE $140 MILLION QUOTED by Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves as the overall debt of this country to Venezuela under the PetroCaribe agreement, is not believable. Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace said that he does not believe the Prime Minister’s figure. “He is saying that is what they now owe, but I not believing that,” Eustace said during a public meeting last Saturday in Clare Valley. The Leader of the Opposition had said on the New Times programme on November 24, that, based on a report that was put together by the Bank of

Nova Scotia, the overall debt for all members of PetroCaribe amounted to EC$29.7 billion, of which St Vincent and the Grenadines’ contribution amounted to 3 percent — or 900 million. However, Dr. Gonsalves, while speaking at the ground breaking ceremony for the Arnhim Eustace is not construction of Bailey accepting the Prime Bridges in North Minister’s disclosure as per Leeward, said that this country’s debt under Eustace had gotten Petrocaribe. the information wrong am getting a loan that and that the debt was year for 25 years at 2 $140 million. percent… you would “…if I get twenty something million dollars have to be a fool not to take it,” Gonsalves said a year, it means that I then. Aunty GÊs fund-raiser breaks new ground TWO HUNDRED AND MORE children flocked to the Chili Hard Court, Georgetown, for the Aunty G Charitable Children Organization’s annual fund-raising event, last Saturday, December 6. The event included:

the now highly anticipated games for children; gift distribution by Santa; interaction with comic book characters (Spiderman, etc.); sporting action (netball); and entertainment from

performing artistes. This year, though, organizers added a new component - the inaugural Miss Christmas Pageant. The Pageant drew wide attention as eight participants, drawn from

schools from within Georgetown and its immediate environs, introduced themselves, paraded in cultural wear and performed a talent. When the cheers had died down and the judges’ tally verififed,

nine-year-old Ideka Marshall, of the Langley Park Government School, was adjudged the winner. Her prizes included an ‘oversized’ stuffed teddy bear from United Vincie Cultural Group of Brooklyn (UVCGB), an outfit, compliments Kids Plus, and a food hamper from K&L Auto/Customs Brokerage Services. Second place was filled by another Langley Park representative, eightyear-old Valesia Johnson. Kayonny Johnson, carrying the colours of the Dickson Government School, placed third. Co-ordinator of the AGCCO, Georgeitha Nanton, was overwhelmed by the response to the Pageant. “I was moved by the appreciation the audience showed for this first time show. We just felt that we needed to add a little more entertainment to our package so as to bring the community together, and it paid dividends. Already, we are looking at making it an annual event,” she said, amidst a look of tiredness after the day’s programme. Performers giving freely of their time included calypsonians Dick I, Ras Isley and

Ideka Marshall, the first ever Miss Christmas Pageant.

Sadist Alive, and dance groups CID Dancers, Puzzle Dance Group, Elite Dancers, GPYE Junior Dancers and Ground Breakers. The netball game featured Langley Park Government versus Sandy Bay Government. In a close but friendly encounter, the Langley Park girls had the upper hand. Nanton was forthcoming in recognising those who had supported the event. Among those were: Flasher Bakery and Grocery, an ongoing and “faithful benefactor”; Dr. Roxie Irish and the UVCGB for the enormous amount of toys that were distributed; Kids Plus and K&L Auto/Customs Brokerage Services for prices in the Miss Christmas Pageant; the St. Vincent Brewery for its all-round input; the performers who “so willing gave of their time and talent,” and “the hundreds of patrons who offer us the encouragement to The Langely Park Government continue with our School, winners of the netball efforts.” match.

Children flock to the point from which gifts were distributed.

Advice

Regrets after two weeks of pleasure Dear George, I AM WRITING to you and hope what I have to say would be a warning to anyone so affected. I had a friend from Barbados who visited me in SVG during a period my husband was away. Unknown to my husband, he stayed at our house. It was the first we were meeting in the flesh, and I don’t have to tell you the details,

George, but we had it going on. It was a beautiful experience having such a handsome and strong man all to myself, for 2 weeks. I introduced him to a few of my friends, and it was not until he was ready to leave that he told me he got involved sexually with approximately four of them, three of them being married. I was very mad at him, but soon realize that he was not mine and I had no

right to make demands. I began missing him so much that I decided to pay him an unexpected visit. I got to his house but he was not at home, and his neighbour started questioning me as to who I was, and how was I related to this man. This was when I discovered that this man had a reputation in Barbados and was a

confirmed HIV/AIDS case. George, I fainted right there and then. The woman took me into her house, cared for me for that day and advised that I get out quickly. But I decided to wait around to have a chat with my gentleman friend, and when I confronted him, he told me that his AIDS was in recession; that I had nothing to fear. I am not going to detail what I did to him, only to say that he will have a hard time urinating from then on. I got tested and sure enough, I was HIV positive. I have not told the other women about his condition. I am now wondering how to break this news to my husband and if this guy had sex with a lot more women than those I knew about.

Finished Dear Finished, There are consequences to infidelity, and while it is unfortunate what happened to you, it was not something that was forced on you. You should have been more responsible on two counts: in deciding not to sleep with this man; and also not having unsafe sex. You need to let these other women know what has befallen you so that they too can get tested. Further, your husband needs to know, so that he could make his own decision about you and the marriage.

Losing out to a dildo Dear George, MY WIFE experimented with a dildo that was much bigger than what God gave to me, and now she has a problem with what I have, saying that she needs something “more challenging.” We agreed that she should get this dildo, seeing that I was planning on going away for a month. Now she uses it more than she touches me and it bothers me greatly. I am afraid that she will go seeking after men who have equal or greater size than this dildo. I have told her about my concern, but she is not listening. She told me point blank that it was my fault to let her get a dildo above my size. The truth is it was she who chose that size. George, I am afraid I am losing my wife to a dildo!

Disgusted Dear Disgusted, Sex toys are a part of some people’s lives but are not intended for everyone. It is important to establish real reasons for wanting sex toys. In your case, going away for one month does not justify getting a toy. There could very well be an underlying reason for her wanting this dildo, and your going away was the perfect excuse. I suggest that you see a marriage counsellor/sexologist to talk about the issues that might be hidden behind the smoke screen of this dildo.

George

Things are looking up Dear George I MUST THANK you for the advice you gave me some time back when I was having trouble with my daughter, after bringing a man in the house to live with us. He has since left, and my daughter is back in school and doing well. We went to see a counselor and we are working on some other stuff. The progress is slow but moving along nicely. I also followed your tip to seek a man after the death of my husband, and I am happy to report it is working. I met this guy, and both my daughter and I are extremely happy with him. I am, however, taking it very slow. Thanks again, George, and keep up the good work.

100% Satisfied. Dear 100% Satisfied, It is good that you listened and are pleased with the way things are working out. It is always best to take things slowly and be very watchful, especially when there is a teenager (your daughter)in the house). I wish you well. Feel free to talk to me if you hit another snag.

George

Digicel customer finds treasure in the sand

IMAGINE RUNNING ON A WHITE sand beach, falling face down, only to discover that you fell on the prize of your life. That became reality on Friday, December 5th, for Shenedon Adams of Union Island, as she ran on Tamarind beach in Canouan, fell, got sand in her face, recovered and discovered she had EC$10,000. Adams was the third winner in the Digicel’s 2014 Christmas promotion dubbed, ‘Together we make Christmas Better’ which, this year, is rewarding customers with huge sums of cash and other great prizes. Last Friday, Digicel took their promotion to Canouan and Tamarind beach, and this saw four persons vying for the chance to win the EC$10,000 cash prize.

Adams; Guylaine Davis of Mt. Pleasant, Bequia; Devon Hacksaw of Barrouallie, and Donaley Shallow of Georgetown were, earlier in the week, chosen by Digicel in a random draw, to take part in last Friday’s game show like showdown on Canouan. On arrival in Canouan, the four were each given a riddle that was designed to lead them to four Digicel flags positioned on Tamarind beach. The four flags marked the areas where four Digicel water bottles were buried. In each bottle lay indication of prizes, with one of the bottles containing the big money prize. “I saw the flag and began running”, laughed Adams, “and I just fell over, but at the end of the day I got the money and I am very happy”.

The self-employed woman has vowed to use some of her new found dollars to assist her family during the Yuletide season, save some for a rainy day and “do some other things.” “I have been a prepaid customer of Digicel since 2003, and I have now won some money from them. I feel real good and proud”, said Adams. The other contestants took EC$300 supermarket vouchers. Marketing Manager at Digicel Juno DeRoche said that the company, apart from making dreams come through, always looks at ways to entertain, interact and have fun with their customers, hence the Canouan game show type activity. “We love our customers because without them we are

nothing, so we want to always be able to show them we care enough to interact with them one on one, and reward them for their loyalty”, said DeRoche. Other $10,000 winners in the Digicel ‘Together we make Christmas Better’ promotion have been: Cornelius Francis of Belvedere, who won on Friday November 21st , and Antonia Robertson of Arnos Vale, who won on Friday November 28th. Both won at the Sunrise Supermarket in Arnos Vale after taking part in a Digicel organised treasure hunt. Police Officer called to Holy Orders

Rev. Hanif Johnson presented as an ordained priest to the congregation.

AN OFFICER of the Royal SVG Police Force (RSVGPF) has been promoted to the Holy Order of Priests. The Reverend Hanif Holman Reynold Johnson was ordained to the Anglican priesthood, during an ordination service at the St. George’s Cathedral, Kingstown, Monday 8th. The ordination was administered by Bishop of the Windward Islands, His Lordship the Right Reverend Bishop C. Leopold Friday. The St. George’s Cathedral was packed with friends, members of Rev. Johnson’s family, parishioners, clergymen and women, current and past ministers of government and members of the RSVGPF, including former Commissioner of Police Keith Miller and current Commissioner Michael Charles. The sermon was delivered by The Venerable J. Everton Weekes, Rector of the Parish of St. Mary, Bequia. Rev. Weekes said that one year ago, Johnson was ordained a Deacon, and that Johnson’s ordination to the priesthood can be seen, through the secular eyes, as a promotion or a call to higher office. But “through spiritual lenses, you are called to greater service and weighty responsibility to Christ’s church.” According to Rev. Weekes,

Johnson, through his ordination as priest, would be put in charge of many things, and he advised him that the prerequisite of every servant and steward of Christ’s ministry, is to be trustworthy. A priest, according to The Venerable Weekes, should dedicate his life to serving God and his church. Weekes appealed to Johnson to devote himself to the people of Christ. “Hanif, never forget your parishioners are chiefly God’s people with whose souls you are entrusted,” Weekes reminded Johnson. “Finally, my youngest brother, soon to be in the priesthood ministry, I appeal to you …... obey your Bishop. If you cannot obey your father in God, how can you expect your parishioners to obey you? You are a Police Officer, you know what it means to be under authority,” Rev Weekes implored. Johnson is a graduate of the University of the West Indies,

Cave Hill Barbados, from which he obtained a Bachelor in Theology. He also holds a Second Class Honours Associate Science Degree from the UWI Open Campus, SVG. He expressed thanks to Almighty God for His sparing mercies and grace bestowed upon him, and to his Bishop, members of the Diocese and fellow clergymen and their families for their prayers, patience and support. The reading of the Certificate of Ordination and General Licence was done by Grenville John, Diocesan Registrar.

The Venerable J. Everton Weekes reminded the new priest that he is now called to greater service and weighty responsibility to Christ’s church.

THE ARNOS VALE PLAYING FIELD hosted its inaugural first class match in April 1972, when a Bevan Condon-led New Zealand team faced a Windward Islands team led by Irvin Shillingford. Since that time, the Arnos Vale Playing Field has moved up the ladder to become a test, ODI and T/20 venue. And while there has been a number of exciting moments in these matches, information suggests that none has harboured as many incidents as First Class match 55957, the 34th at the venue, played between the Windwards Volcanoes and Barbados Pride, in the WICB Professional Cricket League, December 5-9th 2014.

Greiggs back in premiership football

Sea Operations Greiggs returns to top level football in 2015. SEA OPERATIONS GREIGGS has ploughed their way back to the top flight of the National Football Club Championships, after four years in the lower deck. Greiggs assured themselves of a place in the top tier when they laced Campdonia—Chelsea 5-0 last Sunday, in the First Division of the Hairoun Beer sponsored championships played at Victoria Park. The speedy Greiggs team

outplayed their opponents in every department. Accounting for Greiggs goals were Valdo Anderson, who hit a hattrick, and Raffique Mc Dowald and Keno Matthews with one goal each. Anderson, the son of former national striker Curtis ‘Fame’ Joseph, finished with 15 goals, to be the top goal scorer in the First Division. It was a win that pleased the sizeable group of supporters

who had journeyed to the Victoria Park. Heading the commendation of the Greiggs team was coachAjit Duncan, who thought it was destiny. Duncan explained that because of the lack of proper training facilities at the playing field in Greiggs, they chose to enter three other competitions, the North East, Richland Park and Marriaqua, to help in their preparations for the National Club Championships. “What that did for us was more football, in order to get in the training we needed,” Duncan said. Looking forward to the Premier Division in 2015, Duncan projected: “We are very glad that we are back in the Premier Division, and come next year, you are going to get great football from our club.” Greiggs had one blemish in the preliminary phase of the competition, losing one-nil to Richland Park Pride and Joy. Before getting to last Sunday’s final, Greiggs had 4-1 and 2-0 wins over Hillview in the home and away semifinals, while Campdonia- Chelsea won 4-0(0-0 and 4-0) on aggregate over Doves FC. Dominica Labour Party wins 4th term PRELIMINARY RESULTS from the December 8, 2014 general election show that the incumbent Dominica Labour Party (DLP), led by Roosesvelt Skerrit, won 15 of the 21 parliamentary seats in Dominica. The remaining six seats went to the United Workers Party (UWP), led by newcomer Lennox Linton. Both Skerrit and Linton won their respective seats. The results mean that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has won a third consecutive term in office, as his ruling DLP won its fourth consecutive five-year term in power. The results also mean that, while the opposition increased its parliamentary representation by 100% moving up from 3 seats to 6 - and the DLP slipped from 18 to 15, the DLP still commands an overwhelming majority in the House, making it easy for the incumbent to continue on the path it has cut for the development of Dominica. At least one news agency, Dominica News Online, reports that Skerrit said, in a victory

And, at the same time, he is reported to have extended “an olive branch” to the UWP, beckoning them to join him and his DLP to build the country. “Now is the time to close ranks as a people; now is the time to put any negativism aside; now is the time to embrace each other as

We have to heal the nation,” Dominica News Online reported Skerrit as saying.

With an eye on the future, Skerrit promised that, “more resources will be devoted to wiping out poverty and ignorance from the island of Dominica.” The Dominica Labour Party enjoys warm and cordial relations with the incumbent Unity Labour Party of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Walker Piece, New Montrose. Relatives of the deceased volunteered to speak with the media, but rejected a request for their photos to be taken or their names to be published, for fear of reprisal. A family member told THE VINCENTIAN that George hustled out of his mother’s house after receiving a phone call. He left his place of abode around 7pm on Friday. The news of his death was first relayed to his relatives by residents of the Rockies community on Friday night, and confirmed by the police the following day. George was described as a secretive person, keeping his whereabouts and his friends to himself. The relatives claim that George was not known to frequent the area where his body was found. However, they have since been informed that he had friends in New Montrose. According to the relatives, they were told that George was in Kingstown on the night he was killed, and he seemed uneasy. “His phone was ringing, ringing, and he was not sure whether to take the call,” a relative reported what was told to the family. The relatives admitted that George was no saint; that he had his run in with the law, mainly for handling stolen items. “I mean me and he use to argue, but it was just through his ways,” said one relative, “but I could see he was really changing.” The family member, who identified George’s body at the mortuary, said. “I felt bad, my body felt numbed, but then I am a Christian and I have strong faith in God. So I just asking God for strength. Whoever did it, if they have a conscience, only God will know. But God will come through for me.” And even as they endure their loss, the family appealed to persons involved in criminal activities to desist from their wrong-doing. “Because they just killing each other and it isn’t going nowhere. They need to look for some kind of job or occupy themselves, self-employed or otherwise.” An autopsy revealed that George died of Asphyxia as a result of a gunshot wound to the face. He was the fourth child for his mother and the first boy. He attended the Richmond Hill Government School and the Intermediate High School. His burial is expected to take place sometime next week.
