The ordeal
HERMINA JACKSON, a 52-year-old mother of five, employed as a caterer, was sentenced to four years and three months at the Criminal Assizes on Wednesday, for causing the death of her husband Henry Jackson on July 11, 2017. Justice Brian Cottle handed down the penalty following a sterling mitigation plea from the woman’s lawyer, Grant Connell, during which he read a letter she wrote to his Chambers, in which she expressed remorse, and asked for forgiveness.
Jackson was initially charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter last month. The prosecution accepted the plea. The Jacksons were married for over 15 years and resided at La Croix at the time of the incident. Evidence revealed that the relationship had its many challenges, including the husband’s habitual consumption of alcohol. In fact, the victim was stabbed multiple times following a dispute between the two over a utility bill he was to pay, but instead used the money to purchase alcohol.
Mitigation In mitigation, Connell said that during the altercation, her husband boxed her twice, and a struggle ensued. This occurred in the kitchen, and the woman was in possession of knife, which she used to stab him. Although nineteen stabs were inflicted, eight were to the upper arms, indicating consistency with a struggle, the attorney said. Continued on Page 3.
