Chezeek ‘Zeek’ Gumbs is still at a loss as to why the police would have treated him in this manner.
by KENVILLE HORNE
POPULAR VAN DRIVER and soca artiste Chezeek ‘Zeek’ Gumbs was, on Tuesday, arrested and charged with littering and carrying excessive passengers in an omnibus/minivan. But the man who made a hit with ‘Wet it up’ in 2018, has denied committing the offences and instead, claimed that he was a victim of police brutality. Part of an incident which unfolded at Casson Hill on Tuesday that led to Gumbs’ arrest was a video recorded and shared (live) on social media. In a first video clip, Officers of the Traffic Department appear to be struggling to close the door after putting Gumbs into the back of a police car. In a second video clip, someone could be heard shouting that Gumbs did nothing wrong and the driver himself could be heard asking one of the officers, “What you hit me for?” to which the officer replied, “Because yo wouldn’t put in your foot.”

In an interview on the Hot 97.1 SVG Am Mayhem morning show on Wednesday, Gumbs told the hosts that his van plied the Callaiqua-Kingstown route. On the morning in question he was heading to Kingstown, when he realized that a police car was about five vehicles ahead of him.
On noting the police vehicle, he inquired of the conductor about the number of passengers on board. The conductor assured him that the van was not overloaded. Continued on Page 3.
