Local financial company donates coats Top Flite Financial in Boardman and HBA of the Valley donated coats to Liberty Middle School students on Dec. 20 at W.S. Guy Middle school.

The company collected more than 100 coats between the beginning of November and the middle of December. Twenty-nine coats will be distributed to middle school students of Liberty. Top Flite Financial acquired the coats from business partners throughout the community. They set up a raffle where each donated coat

led to a chance to win four tickets to see the Cleveland Cavaliers play.

Mill Creek ABWA to have meeting on Jan. 8 The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Jan. 8 meeting at A LA Cart Catering in Canfield, beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Mary Grace Fowler of Holborn Herb Growers Guild. The Holborn Herb Growers maintain the gardens at the village in Canfield Fair grounds as well as the gardens at Boardman Park. They have an annual tea in September as a fundraiser to help with the expense of buying flowers for these gardens. The menu for the evening will be chicken crepes, ham and cheese strata, french toast sticks, bacon, Canadian bacon, home-fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. Consumer information series: understanding video games This program on understanding video games, which will take place from 1-2:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 at the Boardman library, provides a brief history of the medium, explores some of the appeal and controversies surrounding gaming and introduces consumers to important tools like ESRB (Electronic Software Ratings Board) ratings so they can make informed purchases. Robinwood Lane celebrates break with holiday parties

Boardman Robinwood Lane Elementary School celebrated the upcoming break with a holiday party on Dec. 21.

Principal Don Robinson said that the party is a school tradition.

“It’s been tradition as long as I have been principal and I have been here 48 years,” Robinson said.

Robinwood PTA members organized the event, providing snacks and games for each classroom in the school.

“Kids enjoy it,” Robinson said.

“It’s a nice break from academics.”

Students enjoyed pizza and candy canes while they played games in the fifteen different classrooms.

“Our PTA does a good job of organizing them along with the teachers and home room mom

and dads,” Robinson said.

He ex pla i ned t hat a long w ith Christmas, the school holds holiday parties for Halloween and Valentines Day each year.

Robinson said the parties have changed throughout the years, being less focused on holiday food and more about playing games.

“We have cut back in recent years, we don’t want kids to get sick and they come straight from

lunch,” Robinson said. “Besides, I think they have more fun with the games.”

After the holiday parties students gathered together to end the day with a sing along party.

The school gathered together to sing classic holiday songs before being dismissed for Christmas break, “We get together as a whole school and get that feeling of the holidays, its a nice way to end the day.” Robinson said.

Boardman Park teams up with Santa for special phone calls

Boardman Park offered a unique opportunity for local children to have a one-on-one conversation with Santa Claus on Dec. 12.

Park recreation director Karen McCallum said that she was able to create a partnership with Santa to help him avoid long distance phone charges.

“He patches in through the Boardman Park phone lines and is able to contact local children and have a conversation with them about what they want for Christmas,” McCallum said.

The service is free for anyone who is local, with no restrictions on the number of children who can apply.

McCallum said that families could fill out a form that they faxed or emailed to McCallum.

She then passed the information along to Santa, who checked his list twice before calling.

“It’s encouraging the magic of the season,” McCallum said.

The form provides information about the child, what they want for Christmas and even if they have an Elf on the Shelf.

“It is really a cool thing because often children get to see Santa and it’s all about taking the picture, but this is the chance to have that personal conversation,” McCallum said.

Santa can only make one phone call per family, and will talk to all of the children in the house in one go.

He also only has a couple of minutes to speak with each child, because according to McCallum he has a large amount of people to contact that night.

“It’s just a cool personal conversation that children get to have it’s just a really cool program,” McCallum said.

She said that Santa and his team of helper elfs reach out to every child who signs up for the program.

“Sometimes Santa doesn’t know what the toy is and they have to look it up,” McCallum said. “He has a whole research team keeping him up to date and the elves are in the back round helping him out.”

Girls swimmers finish in first The Boardman girls swim team took first place against Canfield and Massillon Perry with a score of 158 on Dec. 22. Mikel Flatley was the only double winner for the Spartans taking the 50 freestyle (28.31) and the 100 butterfly (1:11.04). Single event winners included Madison Ricciuti in 1 meter diving (186), Jennah Markovitch in the 200 individual medley (2:47.85), Alyssa DiNapoli in the 100 backstroke (1:12.51) and Hayley Ho in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.30). All three of the Boardman girls relays swept first place finishes.

This included the 200 free relay that touched out the Canfield Lady Cardinals by 13 hundredths of a second.

Members of this relay included Hayley Ho, Sarah Varga, Mikel Flatley and Jennah Markovitch. The 200 medley relay team of DiNapoli, Ho, Flatley and Kuras placed first (2:12.18), as did the 400 freestyle relay team of Casey Wert, Sarah Varga, Allison Kuras and Alyssa DiNapoli with a time of 4:37.21.

Varsity girls lose against Struthers The girls varsity basketball team lost to Struthers on Dec. 22 with a score of 56-52. The leading scorer for the Spartans was Maria Torres who finished with a game high 23 points, which included five 3-pointers. Raegan Burkey hit for 15 points and led the team in steals with four. Also scoring in double digits was Katie Stamp, who had 10 points. She led the team in rebounding with nine. Cate Green and Serene Khatib each had two points to round out the scoring for Boardman.

The Boardman High School boys swim team beat Perry 157-77 on Dec. 22. The Boardman boys broke a long standing pool record at the Perry High School Natatorium. Members of this 400 free relay (3:43.28) include juniors Noah Basista, Jordan Stackpole, Will Linker and Matthew DunLany. The record these boys broke was held by Canfield (Hunter, Graham, Braman, Davis). In addition to the record breaking 400 free relay, the same four boys won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:54.22. Double event winners included Noah Basista - 200 individual medley (2:15.68) and 100 butterfly (1:01.94), and Matthew DunLany - 200 freestyle (2:07.33) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.84). Single event winners included Teddy Anzevino - 1 meter diving (176.20), Jordan Stackpole - 100 freestyle (57.04), Will Linker - 400 freestyle (4:34.91) and River Flatley - 100 backstroke (1:05.34).

The boys varsity basketball team suffered a loss to Hudson with a score of 65-47 on Dec. 22. Che Trevena and Derrick Anderson each had 11 points. Daeone Martin had nine points, Ethan Andersen had six points, Cam Kreps had four points, and Zach Ryan and Charlie Davis each had three points.

Nelson and Mary Ann Navarro of Boardman and Jeffery and Suzanne Barnes of Strongsville are announcing the engagement of their children, Lisa Navarro of Boardman and Alex Barnes of Strongsville.

The couple will be united in marriage July 27, 2019, at St. Charles Church in Boardman. Invitations will be extended for a reception to take place that evening at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman.

The future bride graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in business.

Her fiancé holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from OSU and a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Ohio Dominican University.

Roy and RoseMar y Anderson of Boardman recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at home.

The couple’s children are Darlene (Geoff) Knight of Hudson, Deborah (Rob) Hooks of Youngstown, Denise (Ed) Moore of Boardman and Doreen Anderson of Youngstown. Their eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren complete the family.

Mr. Anderson married the former RoseMary Troll on Nov. 8, 1948, in Youngstown.

Mrs. Anderson was a licensed practical nurse for St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown until she retired in 1991.

Mr. Anderson worked at Ace Lumber in Youngstown and retired in 2010.

The couple are members of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Youngstown.

He is employed at Midwestern University in Glendale, Ariz.
