Mill Creek ABWA to have meeting on Jan. 8 The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Jan. 8 meeting at A LA Cart Catering in Canfield, beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Mary Grace Fowler of Holborn Herb Growers Guild. The Holborn Herb Growers maintain the gardens at the village in Canfield Fair grounds as well as the gardens at Boardman Park. They have an annual tea in September as a fundraiser to help with the expense of buying flowers for these gardens.

The menu for the evening will be chicken crepes, ham and cheese strata, french toast sticks, bacon, Canadian bacon, home-fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea.

The cost is $17 per person and reservations may be made by calling Darlene Demjen at 330755-9089 or Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2527 by Dec. 31. The public is welcome.

CHS swim and dive team hosts annual pancake breakfast The Canfield High School swim and dive team will host its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on Jan. 6 in the Canfield High School cafeteria from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or from any CHS swimmer, diver or booster parents. The cost is $6.50 for adults and $4 for children. Takeout breakfasts are also available for purchase. The breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, milk and orange juice. The proceeds will benefit the swim and dive team program. Money raised supports coach salaries, pool rental fees, meet entry fees, equipment, team suits, the team banquet and awards, after-meet meals and special busing to the NEAC conference championship meet. The Canfield High School swim and dive team boosters organize the event and take over the high school kitchen to prepare the breakfast. Members of the swim and dive team take shifts bussing tables, selling raffle tickets and making sure that everyone has enough to eat.

CHS chemistry students create candy canes

Canfield High School students in Tom Slaven’s AP Chemistry and Advanced Chemistry 2 classes celebrated the holidays with some hands-on science and a little fun on Dec. 18.

Before the students started their holiday break, they constructed Variegated Disaccharide “J” Tubes, also known as candy canes.

The chemistry students followed a scientific recipe only a chemist could read, and comprehend, to create the classic holiday favorite.

“I did this for the first time last year and the students really had fun with it. I wanted to continue it this year with my students and they seem to be having a good time with it, too. The only thing is, I have to do most of the clean up when they‘re done, but I enjoy this and am willing to do it,” Slaven said.

The students could choose from a variety of colors using food coloring, but the taste of peppermint was the same as the classic candy cane. After following the recipe, the students pulled the mixture, like taffy, into long tubes and then twisted it into the recognizable shape of a candy cane.

Slaven also said the fun project goes hand in hand with what the students are studying.

“This project relates to our content. We are studying chemical bonding and crystals, so this project is a nice example of crystallization,” Slaven said.

At the end of class, the students packed up their Variegated Disaccharide “J” Tubes to take home for the holidays.

Troop 25’s upcoming calendar includes the Klondike Derby in January, Advancement Camp in March, participation in the Mill Creek MetroParks Earth Day Cleanup. camping and the Canfield Memorial Day Parade in May and additional activities in the summer of 2019.

More recent ly, t he troop hosted its annual troop Junior Leader Training at Snyder’s Farm in New Springfield.

This Junior Leader Training was open to all First Class and above Scouts in the troop and is offered for the Scouts to work on their leadership, teamwork and communication skills via group discussions, games and activities. They spoke about what they value most in terms of leadership skills and identified an area of opportunity that

they must develop as leaders.

They discussed what it means to be a good team member and how to improve those skills.

They worked to schedule their monthly patrol meetings and identified an agenda/structure for those meetings.

Following activities designed to reinforce those objectives, they were joined by the rest of the troop, their families, some of the Cub Scout Pack 25 Webelos and their families, and they had a Thanksgiving dinner.

Swimmers take top places against Austintown and Poland

Student art displayed

The 2018 Slippery Rock Regional High School Art Exhibition recently took place in the Martha Gault Galley on the campus of Slippery Rock University. High school students from across the region were invited to submit their work to this faculty juried exhibition. A total of six works of art from five Canfield High School students were accepted into this year’s show with several students earning recognition, including Stefania Marciniak, who won the Student Choice Award for her drawing titled “Flaming Jars”; Sophie Hodge, who won an honorable mention for her portrait collage titled “Falling to Pieces” (pictured), and Cassidy Mersing, who was awarded a scholarship (amount to be determined) for her portfolio submission. Students also included in the show were Emily Burrows with a charcoal drawing titled “Innocent Lights” and Candice Kraykovich with an oil Painting titled “In Full Bloom.”

CHS cross county runner Copploe signs at OSU

Canfield High School senior cross county and track runner Giovanni Copploe formally announced his intention to continue his academic and running career at The Ohio State University at a National Letter of Intent signing ceremony at the high school on Dec. 12.

He is the son of Vinny and Jean Copploe.

In cross country, Copploe is a three-time state qualifier, a onetime state placer (19th place), All Ohio, three-time First Team All AAC, one-time Mahoning County Champion and onetime AAC Champion. In indoor track, Copploe is a one-time state qualifier, one-time state placer (seventh place) and All Ohio. In track, Copploe is a onetime State Qualifier, Regional Champion, District Runner-up, National Qualifier, placed 12th at Nationals and is the Canfield High School Record Holder for the 3200-meter run (9:09).

It took talent, hard work, good luck and good health and a good network of teammates, coaches

and parents. This moment is for Mr. and Mrs. Copploe, too.

It’s not just for Giovanni or for us, it’s for them, too. And I’d like to recognize one last person, Coach Mike Dahman. Giovanni wouldn‘t be here without Mike,” Hlaudy said.

Hlaudy then turned the stage over to Copploe to sign his National Letter of Intent and to say a few words to the large crowd.

“I’d like to thank my parents

for their support and my coaches for telling me what to do and helping me in certain situations.

I’d also like to thank my teammates. Without them, I would not be here right now. Thank you for coming out today,” Copploe said.

To end the event, Copploe greeted and received congratulations from teammates, classmates, coaches, faculty, staff and family.

Canfield swimmers compete in tri-meet The Canfield High School swim team competed at a trimeet between Boardman and Massillon Perry on Dec. 22 at Massillon Perry.

The CHS boys swimmers came in second place with a score of 79 against Boardman’s 157 and Masillon Perry’s 77.

Events where boys swimmers placed in the top three were the 200 medley relay team of Matthew Peckman, Bobby Kutsch, James Dietz and Jason Paris (second); in the 200 individual medley - Luke Dietz (third); in the 50 freestyle - Jason Paris (first); in the 100 freestyle - Matthew Peckman (third); in the 400 freestyle - Rob DiDomenico (second); the 200 meter freestyle relay team of Kutsch, J. Dietz, Peckman and Paris in first with a school record breaking time of 1:40.94; in the

100 backstroke - Connor Fritz (second) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Rob DiDomenico, Joe Klepec, Connor Fritz and Luke Dietz (third).

The girls team came in third with a score of 73 to Boardman’s 158 and Massillon Perry’s 91.

Events where girls swimmers placed in the top three were the 200 medley relay team of Sydney Schuler, Elle Dawson, Jordan Helmick and Miranda Peckman (second); in the 200 Individual Medley - Elle Dawson (second); in the 50 meter freestyle - Sydney Schuler (second) with a school record breaking time of 28.61; in the 400 freestyle - Sydney Schuler (first) and the 200 meter freestyle relay team of Miranda Peckman, Helmick, Dawson and Schuler (second) with a record breaking time of 1:57.38.

Nelson and Mary Ann Navarro of Boardman and Jeffery and Suzanne Barnes of Strongsville are announcing the engagement of their children, Lisa Navarro of Boardman and Alex Barnes of Strongsville.

The couple will be united in marriage July 27, 2019, at St. Charles Church in Boardman. Invitations will be extended for a reception to take place that evening at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman.

The future bride graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in business.

Her fiancé holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from OSU and a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Ohio Dominican University.

Roy and RoseMar y Anderson of Boardman recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at home.

The couple’s children are Darlene (Geoff) Knight of Hudson, Deborah (Rob) Hooks of Youngstown, Denise (Ed) Moore of Boardman and Doreen Anderson of Youngstown. Their eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren complete the family.

Mr. Anderson married the former RoseMary Troll on Nov. 8, 1948, in Youngstown.

Mrs. Anderson was a licensed practical nurse for St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown until she retired in 1991.

Mr. Anderson worked at Ace Lumber in Youngstown and retired in 2010.

The couple are members of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Youngstown.

The ceremony and reception will take place May 26, 2019, at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Invitations will be issued for both events.

The bride-elect graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She is a client-support specialist at ADP in Tempe, Ariz.

Mr. Wittchow graduated from Minnesota State University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and will graduate in May 2019 with a degree in dentistry. He will begin the Orthodontics and Dento-

facial Orthopedics Residency program at the University of Nevada in July 2019.

He is employed at Midwestern University in Glendale, Ariz.
