Local church shows popular movie Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 2305 South Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, will be showing the movie, “WALL-E,” at its next movie night in Redeemer’s Fellowship Hall on Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. Tickets are available (for free) after church on Jan. 13 and 20 and at the door. Tickets entitle the holder to free popcorn and a drink during the movie. This event is open to the public, and those in attendance are invited to bring your friends, neighbors and family to see the movie.

Library receives ‘Mental Health First Aid’ grant The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) has received a grant for $4,999 for Mental Health First Aid training. The grant is from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and awarded by the State Library of Ohio, under the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). With this grant, library employees and participants from the public will be trained to assist people showing signs of behaviors associated with mental health issues or addiction and connect them to professional services to address their needs.

The grant provides for training in two areas, youth and adult, and aims to educate 100 people interested in this

type of specialized instruction. There will be two Adult Mental Health First Aid training sessions and two Youth Mental Health First Aid training sessions at PLYMC libraries. Those sessions will be scheduled in the coming months. The library is partnering with the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board and Alta Care Group, which will provide instructors.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this disease.

Cardinal Mooney hosts 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner On Feb. 17, Cardinal Mooney High School will host its 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland.

Michael Kusalaba library celebrates Kwanzaa

The Michael Kusalaba library hosted its first Kwanzaa celebration event on Dec. 27.

Librarian Hannah Matulek organized the event, stating that the event usually only happens at the East branch.

“Today we are celebrating Kwanzaa, and we are going to learn about the seven principals

of Kwanzaa,” Matulek said.

Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrating African heritage and African American culture.

“We have fruit to celebrate the harvest, which is what Kwanzaa means, celebrating the harvest,” Matulek said.

The event began with Matulek reading “Kwanzaa Celebration Pop-Up Book” to those present.

She then broke down the meanings in the book, going over

the seven principals of Kwanzaa and the symbols.

The principals of Kwanzaa include Umoja, or unity; Kujichagulia, self-determination; Ujima, collective work and responsibility; Ujamaa, cooperative economics; Nia, purpose; Kuumba, creativity; and Imani, or faith.

To celebrate these principals, Kwanzaa is seven days from Dec. 26 until Jan. 1, ending on the final

day with a feast and gift giving.

The symbols include the mat, Mkeka, candle holder, Kinara, the seven candles, or Mishumaa Saba, crops, Muhindi, unity cup, Kikombe cha Umoja, and gifts, or Zawadi.

Matulek provided fruit to celebrate the harvest, as well as coloring pages and crafts for everyone to enjoy. For more information on upcoming library events, visit www.libraryvisit.org.

All art must be 5 inches by 5 inches, and created on or attached to a stiff surface (mat board, foam core, etc). The artist’s name and title of piece should be written on the back and the requisite paperwork included. The annual Christmas Social of the GFWC Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League took place on Dec. 3 at The Magic Tree Restaurant in Boardman. Members of the league brought diapers to be donated to Making Kids Count. Dr. Seuss books were also bought by members and donated to member Maddie Crish’s second-grade class at Market Street Elementary School for Christmas, where she concluded her student teaching. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women older than 18 and residing in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs.

Preschoolers experience “Journey to Bethlehem” The children at Austintown Community Church Preschool Childcare Center went on a “Journey to Bethlehem” on Dec. 12 and 13.

This annual, interactive play is put on by parent and church member volunteers. The roles played by the volunteers, include an angel, an inn keeper, shepherds, three w isemen, Mary, Joseph and, of course, baby Jesus.

The staff at A.C.C. transformed the upstairs hallway into several scenes in order to replicate the long journey that Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem.

This event offered annually for the children attending A.C.C. Preschool to help enhance their spiritual growth and understanding of Jesus’ birth. It is also meant to bring hope, peace, joy and love to all.

Community Action Partnership of Mercer County is seeking a part time individual (30 hrs. weekly) to manage CAPMC Housing Complexes, in Greenville, PA. Duties include rent collection, resident relations, and management of day to day operations. Provide professional and effective management of housing complexes, with customer service being a priority, and communicate with the maintenance manager. Will handle all leasing activities, insure eligibility requirements are met, and maintain resident relations and activities. Qualifications: Associates or Bachelors Degree in Hospitality, Real Estate, Property Management or related fields, 2 years’ experience in Property Management, Real Estate or Hospitality related activities. Experience in Property Maintenance and previous experience in HUD, LITC or Section 8 properties a plus.

Mr. Calhoun is a son of Brad and Sue Calhoun of Boardman.

Mrs. Calhoun earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Youngstown State University. She is a doctoral candidate in counselor education and supervision at the University of Akron. She is a clinical counselor in private practice and is a member of the adjunct faculty in the Department of Counseling, School of Psychology and Educational Leadership at YSU. Her husband studied at Birbeck University of London and received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from YSU. He is employed as director of operations at Falcon Transport Co. in Youngstown.
