Enrique Martinez read to therapy dog Reese and Dana Patrick at the Austintown library on Dec. 9.

The Austintown library offers doggone helpful reading program By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Austintown library gave children a chance to read to a therapy dog in their small meeting room on Dec. 9. Dana Patrick, a second-grade teacher at Austintown Elementary School, brought her dog, Reese, to the library. A wide-range of school-age children take the opportunity to practice their reading skills with the dog. Patrick said reading to the dog helps the children step away from their parents and gain some experience and confidence reading independently. The dog helps remove the stress of reading for some students while Patrick’s experience as an elementary

teacher allows for students to get help with certain words from someone who is trained to help children. The children choose their own books to read, though the library will offer a few books on the table outside of the meeting room. The library tries to put a theme to the stories they offer, such as holiday books in December. Reese is a trained therapy dog certified from Pet Partners. He has been certified for four years. Patrick asked the library to bring in the program about two years. Since then, they have gotten around 12 children signed up for the program every month. The program runs every second Saturday in the month.

Ford Nature guests make bird feeders and hike by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Participants visited the Ford Nature Center on Dec. 28 for the “Joy to the Birds“ program, where they made small bird feeders and took a small hike. Marilyn Williams, a naturalist with Mill Creek Metroparks, welcomed the guests to the center and demonstrated the two types of bird feeders they made during the day.

They began the event by creating starting at one of the two stations to make the bird feeders. For one of the feeders, they tied a string to a pine cone so that it could hang from a tree. They then could spread peanut butter, lard or both on the pinecones. They added sunflower seeds, which stuck to the peanut butter and lard. The other bird feeder had the guests put food on a pipe cleaner and bend the pipe cleaner in

a ring, so the feeder will hang on a tree. The types of food offered to place on the pipe cleaner included Cheerios, grapes, nuts, apples and cranberries. While the participants worked on their feeders, Williams told the visitors some other ways to help animals during the winter. The overwinter birds need shelter and water along with their food, so one could make a brush bile for their shelter and heat their bird bath to keep the water

going through the winter. A f ter t he group f inished making the feeders, they went outside to place the feeders on their evergreen tree outside. All guests made multiple feeders, and some chose to take some of their creations home with them to feed the birds out there. They finished the day off with a small hike down the East Cohasset Hike & Bike Trail. Everyone wore heavy coats and gloves to stay warm on the hike.

Local veteran to speak on Battle of the Bulge Jan. 15 Howard “Howdy” Friend, a local retired educator and administrator, will relate his experiences in the Battle of the Bulge for members of the World War II Heritage Group when they meet on Jan. 15. The speech will be preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:15 p.m. at AlaCarte Catering, located on Lisbon Street in Canfield. A power point presentation will accompany his speech, which is based on his actions in battle. Reservations are due to David Frank, 330 757-0515, by Jan. 12.

countries and cultures. Tim Seman, a genealogy librarian at the Main library in Youngstown, researched how other cultures celebrate Christmas. His research led him to creating the “Jingle Bell Genealogy“ presentation he gave at the library. Seman said the event allowed him to end the year in a festive manner while getting feedback from the audience about the types of genealogy programs they want offered throughout the PLYMC. He took the audience around the world one continent at a time, beginning with Africa. While in Africa, he explained a few countries that celebrate Christmas, like Nigeria and South Africa. South Africa, as well as other countries in other continents, observe Christmas the way the British or Unites States do because of imperialism. He showed humorous pictures of people near the equator celebrating Christmas on the beach, as well as Australians observing the holidays during their summer season. While talking about Australia, he explained the meaning of Christmas Island, which was named on Christmas Day. Some countries, such as China, do little in terms of celebration for Christmas. Other

countries, like the Philippines, do a great deal of celebrating for the holiday. According to Seman’s findings, the Philippines begin their Christmas celebrations as early as September. He talked about the older mytholog y of Christmas in Europe, where St. Nicolas was said to have companions, such as Knecht Ruprecht and Krampus. Both would beat misbehaved children, and Krampus would even abduct children and send them to the underworld. Throughout the various cultures, Seman found ties connecting their celebrations. Most cultures have traditions involving the family to bring them closer together. Many also observe Christmas to coincide with the solstice, using light in their traditions. After he finished his presentation, he talked about some of the Slavic and Polish traditions his families took part in. He also said that he celebrates other traditions with friends outside of his heritage. He finished his talk by speaking about the different resources available at the library for genealogy research. He told the audience to contact him with any questions about genealogy and made note that he has genealogy programs monthly throughout the year.

Boardman Community Baseball expands Little League territory Boa rd ma n Com mu n it y Baseball, under Little League International regulations, has expanded its boundary map to include children attending St. Christine, Kirkmere Elementary and Valley Christian schools in Youngstown for the 2018 season. St. Charles students have been eligible to play at BCB since 2014. Previous Little League regulations limited BCB players to live within the boundary map of the league, which previously only included Boardman Local School District. “This should give many more students who have not had the opportunity a chance to play Little League baseball and softball,” said Chad Miller, BCB president. “By expanding our boundaries, students who attend St. Christine, Kirkmere Elementary and Valley Christian schools can now play at BCB’s Fields of Dreams in the baseball and softball programs regardless of their physical residence.” Players will be required to verify registration at their respec-

tive school. BCB has baseball programs available for boys who are ages 4-18, with the players age calculated as of Aug. 31, 2018; and softball programs for girls who are ages 4-14 with the age calculated on Dec. 31, 2017. All games are played at the Fields of Dreams, located at 410 McClurg Road in Boardman, a 43-acre complex with 20 fields and two full-service concession stands, owned by Boardman Community Baseball. Information about BCB registration will be available through the schools in early January. Visit the BCB website at www. boardmanbaseball.com for information. Easy and secure registration is available online starting Jan. 1, 2018 at www. boardmanbaseball.com. An onsite/online registration day for all ages will take place from 12-3 p.m. on Feb. 10 at the Fields of Dreams. For more information, visit the website or call 330-758-2123, leave a message and the call will be returned.
