Mooney takes over Barnes and Noble for ACHMV By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Cardinal Mooney staff and students volunteered their time to collect donations for Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley on Dec. 9 and 10 at Barnes and Noble. Staff, such as languages teacher Marlene Bassil, spent time organizing the event and volunteering. Art teacher Maureen Kandray and her students decorated the Starbucks lobby in the store. “When Cardinals appear, angels are near,“ was the school’s slogan for the event. Volunteers made red origami birds to give out during the event to go along with their mascot, the Cardinal. They had pens, notebooks and
other items with the school’s logo on them at the event. The volunteers gift wrapped presents for those at the library for a small fee. The Starbucks location made a special drink called the “Mooney Mocha“ during the two days. All money made through the wrapping and drink sales went toward Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley. The school also brought in their choir and speech and debate team to the store on Sunday. The choir sang Christmas Carols during the event. The speech and debate team had a story time in the children’s section of the store. They also brought a Cardinal Mooney coloring book activity with them.

The reading took less than five minutes and included the important details of the story. After the story time, she allowed all the children to move freely between stations she set up. Each station had a relation to the the story, such as the ring toss game called, “ring the Mouse King.“ She also offered a number of crafts. One of the stations gave
the children the opportunity to make their own nutcracker from everyday items. Similarly, she had coloring sheets for children to color a picture of the Nutcracker. The children could also cut out Princess Pirlipat paper dolls. The event a lso had a few stations for other fun activities. Kuczek set up a table for children to learn ballet poses and check out books on ballet. Families could take a picture with a large nutcracker. She also had a table called “the land of sweets,“ referencing a location in the Nutcracker story, where children could eat candy and drink lemonade.

POLICE BLOTTER Dec. 22 Theft: Charmain N.T. Green, 23, of Kensington Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with theft and criminal trespassing after 11 children’s toys valued at $263 were stolen from Walmart. Green, who also was accused of violating a trespassing warning, used a 94-cent sales tag to scan each of the 11 items, a report said. Theft: A nursing supervisor with a South Avenue long-term care facility reported $200 had been removed from a resident’s room. Recovered property: An abandoned 2004 Hyundai Sedan was found in a parking lot in the 400 block of BoardmanCanfield Road, where it reportedly had sat for about four years. Theft: Niles police handed Mitchell A. Adkins, 50, to township authorities. Adkins, of Depot Street, Mineral Ridge, was charged with stealing a $799 power washer Oct. 18 from Home Depot, 7001 Southern Blvd. Theft by deception: Officers took custody of Sebrina L. Herliska, 50, of Reed Avenue, Campbell, who faced a felony theft-by-deception charge, related to a Sept. 23 situation in which an Oakridge Drive man discovered 18 checks had been stolen from his elderly mother, for whom Herliska acted as a caregiver. Eight of the checks had been cashed and others were made out to Herliska, a police report showed. Dec. 23 Arrest: A traffic stop near Shields Road and Market Street resulted in the arrest of Akaia B. Hutchins, 32, of Ridley Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on a Campbell warrant accusing her of violating a court order. Assault: A Youngstown woman alleged her boyfriend’s former girlfriend threw beer on her, then attacked the accuser during a Christmas party at a South

Possible theft: A man reported his $700 iPhone lost or stolen while he was in Southern Park Mall. Theft/counterfeit: A man and a woman reportedly used nine phony $100 bills to pay for merchandise at Burlington Coat Factory, 529 Boardman-Canfield Road. The man was to have been given a criminal-trespassing warning. Arrest: Traci L. Mitchell of Plazaview Court, Youngstown, was taken into custody during a traffic stop on Market Street. Mitchell, 26, was wanted on a probation-violation charge from Liberty Township. Theft: Police charged Dontrell L. McCreary, 24, with purposely failing to selfscan about $101 worth of children’s
toys while he was in Walmart. McCreary, of Logan Gate Road, Liberty, also was wanted on one warrant each from Liberty and Youngstown. Theft: Trudi L. Sharp, 29, of Idora Avenue, Youngstown, faced a charge. Sharp was accused of stealing about $206 worth of items, including undergarments, from Walmart. Arrest: Police investigated a traffic problem near Southern Boulevard, where they charged Scott J. Wahlman, 31, who listed Boardman addresses on New England Boulevard and Appleridge Drive, with operating a vehicle impaired. Walhman, who also was cited on a charge of impeding traffic, registered a 0.172 blood-alcohol content, which is more than twice Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report showed. Theft: John M. Allen Jr., 41, of Camden Avenue, Youngstown, was picked up on a felony-theft charge as police answered a shoplifting call at Burlington Coat Factory. Allen admitted having stolen a 2017 Ford Explorer on Nov. 23 from a parking lot in the 7200 block of Market Street, authorities alleged. Dec. 24 Arrest: Lamar C. Ware, 44, was taken into custody after having been pulled over on Market Street and charged with operating a vehicle impaired. Market Street Elementary School offers Spanish classes after school for students who want to learn the language. Pictured, instructor Enid Maldonado reviewed the Spanish alphabet with the students.
Elementary students learn Spanish after school By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Students at Market Street Elementary School met after school for a lesson in Spanish on Dec. 6. Enid Maldonado teaches children weekly in an afterschool program to teach them the Spanish language. They learned about nouns and the gender of words in Spanish. She said she wants the lessons to let “the students to know that there’s nothing they can’t do.” She makes everything positive in the lesson. She said they can not learn if they do not make mistakes. The students learn very basic Spanish skills since they are elementary students. For example, they learned the Spanish words for book, clock and calendar during class. They also placed “el“ and “la“ before the words depending on if the words are masculine or feminine in the Spanish language. However, Maldonado does give extra lessons to students that want them. One of her students has learned to conjugate
some Spanish words and speak in multiple tenses, which most students will not do until they are in middle or high school. She uses multiple forms of instruction in the class. She gives them worksheets that they work through together. The students received a Spanish workbook to help them learn. She incorporates games into lessons to let the students have some fun while learning. She works concept the students already learned into future lessons to continue to review those concepts. She said she keeps a laid back environment for the classroom. For example, if the students begin to struggle, she will have them partner up to alleviate some of the stress they feel. Maldonado began the program in Canfield schools in 1996. Once that program disbanded, she created her own program at a number of schools, including Market Street Elementary. The program runs for 21 weeks at the elementary. She also offers the program at Center Intermediate School and Glenwood Junior High School.

There was a blast from the past at Stadium Drive Elementary on Nov. 8. First-graders celebrated 50 Days of Learning and they did it in true 1950s fashion. Girls wore poodle skirts and cardigans and the boys slicked their hair and wore white t-shirts and jeans with the cuffs rolled up. The three first-grade classes joined together to work at “50s Learning Centers,” practicing math and numbers skills. First-grade teacher Missy Struharik said plans are already in the works to celebrate 100 Days of School in the beginning of February. Picture are Peyton Arn and Caiden Hoff
Ice skating rink open at Boardman Park Boardman Township Park has announced that an outdoor ice skating rink has been opened for free unsupervised public skating starting on Jan. 4. The Ice Rink is located adjacent to the parking lot at the park’s Southern Boulevard entrance. Skating is only allowed when ice conditions are safe and the open sign is posted at the ice rink. The Ice Rink will be open Monday through Sunday as follows: non-contact hockey from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., open skating from 1-4 p.m., non-contact hockey from 4-6 p.m., and additional open skating from 6-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday and additional

The park does not provide skate rentals. All non-contact hockey players must use approved equipment including certified helmets and face guards and provide their own goals. The park will provide a fire pit and benches at the Rink. Skaters are reminded to dress for the weather conditions and to wear properly fitted skates. A complete list of hours and ice rink rules are available at www.boardmanpark.com and on the park’s Facebook page.
