New year kicks off with new learning space and MLK Day events By Natalie Wright Neighbors Editor
The main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County recently opened a brand new interactive learning experience through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The new space a i m s to pr o mote education Wright for children in grades K-8 and offers a unique opportunity for them to get hands-on experience working with the latest technology, including the chance to fly a drone to learn about aerodynamics, compose music on music editing software, film an animated movie and more. The learning space is also in partnership with OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Children’s Center for Science and Technology. Several stations and activities are paired together to present a completely rounded experience. Participating in these activities will earn your child a stackable badge, which will show off their newly acquired skills. Check in your Neighbors edition in the next several weeks for
our coverage of the grand opening of this space. Also, this week will start off with a celebration of Martin Luther King Day. The struggles of the Civil Rights movement still affect our nation to this day and it is important to make sure that our children understand the importance and significance of the meaning behind this holiday, not just that they can be out of school for an extra day. This year, I challenge not only our readers, but also myself, to spend whatever time possible this Monday reflecting on the historic significance behind Martin Luther King Day. Resources for teachers, parents and students are available through The Vindicator’s Newspapers in Education website found at www.nieteacher.org/ vindynie/, as well as through visiting your local library. Further information on Rev. Martin Luther King, his family and nonviolent social change can be found online at www.thekingcenter. org. In addition, February is right around the corner, and with it comes the celebration of Black History Month. Don’t forget to look in your copy of The Vindicator Feb. 1, 8 and 22 for facts, pictures and more dedicated to honoring Black History Month.

Pavlik completed her graduate work at Youngstown State University on the research of birds, so this project is very special to her. “It’s really nice being able to share my passion for the outdoors with my students,” she said. “So often teachers learn about their students, but not too often do students get to learn about their teachers.” Both Pavlik’s biology and zoology classes will participate in “Bluebirds to Falcons,” but will focus on different areas based on the curriculum. “In biology, we will focus more on species relationships, whereas in zoology, the students will be doing a full unit on birds,” Pavlik said. Mrs. Kocher’s third-grade class posed with Santa after spending time talking to him and telling him what they wanted for Christmas.
Santa brings joy to Austintown Intermediate School By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintow n Intermediate School had a special visitor on Dec. 18. Santa Claus and his elves came to surprise the students in third, fourth and fifth grade. Each year, the PTA puts on this special event with the help of parent and grandparent volunteers. Santa and his elves visited the fifth- and fourth-grade classes first, and saved the third-grade class for last. The elves passed out a candy cane and a bag of reindeer food to every student. The reindeer food was made of granola and
glitter for the students to sprinkle on their yard for Santa’s reindeer to eat. Santa visited all of the classes, talked to the students and took giant class pictures with each them. Walgreens also helped the Austintown PTA with the pictures by giving them a special deal when it came to printing out all the pictures of the students with Santa. Many of the students were surprised when they saw Santa and rushed at the opportunity to tell him what they wanted for Christmas. “The third-graders are the ones who get most excited

when they see Santa,” said Amy Sherwood, the PTA member in charge of this event. Some of the students had a hard time believing that the Santa coming to visit was a real Santa, but many of the students enjoyed seeing him and got excited to talk to him and hug him. Austintow n Intermediate School also got into the Christmas spirit by having a Santa gift workshop and a door decorating contest. The students and teachers worked hard to make decorations for their doors before Santa came to the classes. His visit gave them a little break from crafting. Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci

The Austintown library hosted a Make it in a Mug event on Dec. 18. Books, snacks and supplies were all available to learn more about making snacks in a mug. Jen Kuczek, Austintown librarian, came up with the event to be festive and a good gift for anyone. Guests surrounded the supply table filling their little bags up with different ingredients to make their mug meals. Chocolate pudding cake and Rice Krispy Treat ingredients, and instructions were set out for the participants to use. “Send it to college students, give it to your grandkids, stocking stuffers, all kinds of different things you can do with these,” said Kuczek.

Gifts like these are great for college students who, in many cases, just have microwaves and mugs available in order to cook. Anything simple and fast works well with a college student’s busy schedule. Coffee, tea and cookies were available for the guests to enjoy while making their gift bags. The plastic gift bags were used to contain the dry ingredients and toppings, like marshmallows and chocolate chips. To seal the bags together, a little piece of paper was provided with the rest of the wet ingredients and instructions on how to make the treat in a mug. Meals in mugs have become very popular recently and can be found in a variety of places. Kuczek got the idea when she saw a lot of cooking in mug books starting coming into the library and seeing the response of people being interest in them. The librarians try to gage what is becoming popular and try turn it into events that the community can come to and enjoy, while also learning something new.

Sprout Club at Fellows Riverside Garden pops with excitement By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Sprout Club at Fellows Riverside Garden had its monthly meeting on Dec. 17 and this time the topic was all about popcorn. Lynn Zocolo, the horticlture educator at Mill Creek Metroparks, led the class with help from Mandy Smith, the education director. The children attending learned about popcorn and where it comes from and how the kernels pop into popcorn.
The children started the class with a coloring sheet before Zocolo started walking around with pictures of corn plants, corn and then popcorn. Popcorn kernels were passed out to each child for them to feel, smell and look at. After the children were done examining the kernels, they starting working on making a snowman snack cup. There was a little, clear cup at each child’s seat for them to decorate. They would put googly eyes on the cup along with a red scarf, then they would draw a mouth and some buttons on to decorate it how-

ever they’d like. While the children waited for their popcorn snack to pop, they all went up to what Zocolo referred to as the “discovery table.” The discovery table had two big bowls on it which contained field corn, popcorn kernels and already pre-popped popcorn, which was used for the children to look at and play with as they waited. “The smell, you can’t go wrong with popcorn,” said Zocolo as the room filled with the smell of freshly popped popcorn. When the popcorn finished popping,
the children ate their snack while listening to Zocolo read a story about popcorn. One of the things mentioned in the story was a popcorn volcano, and that’s exactly what Zocolo tried to make as a finale to the event. She laid out a sheet and put the air popper on the ground and removed the lid. She then put kernels in the air popper and waited for the kernels to pop. The children stood around the air popper, some chanting “popcorn volcano,” as they waited for the popcorn to fly into the air.
