Fourth-grade students become young scientists By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The fourth-grade students of West Boulevard Elementary hosted a science fair on Dec. 10 in the school gym. The gym was filled with several different kinds of science projects, all created by the students. The science fair was intended for students to learn by having hands-on experience and research. The projects ranged from night vision goggles and how well they really worked to what type of produce emits the most power. The students stood proudly by their experiments and were eager to tell anyone who asked about them. Fa m i ly a nd f r iend s su rrounded the projects admiring the hard work that was put into the experiments by the students. Karen McCallum, a mother to one student, described the work that her daughter put into her science project. “She’s a red-head, so she tested out coloring red hair as opposed to blonde hair to see

ing, blowing and measuring a bunch of different bubble gums. The science fair also provided snacks and refreshments for the guests.

Boardman library transforms into holiday craft zone By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Boardman library transformed one of their activity rooms into an area for guests to come and make crafts for the holidays on Dec. 12. Librarian Alli Graff monitored the event while children and other guests came in and made their different projects for the holidays. Crafts available for the children to make included filter snowflakes, book cover bows, paper candy canes, wreaths made out of yarn and paper plates and Christmas ornament CDs. Children came in and out of the room throughout the event, which lasted from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and made several different items to take home. “This is my favorite one, the book cover bows. You have all these strips and make figure eights w ith them and keep building them onto each other,” said Graff. The book cover bows was a craft for those who wanted to try something more advanced, but Graff was willing to help with those who couldn’t quite get the hang of it. Even though there were instructors at each craft station, the children were encouraged to make whatever they wanted. Some of the children made their ow n crafts out of the supplies. The children went from station to station and used the supplies provided to create their own masterpieces. This event gave the opportunity for families to get together and be creative. Graff had a few books out and Christmas music playing to get the children in the Christmas spirit.

Santa and Rudolph made a special appearance during the Boardman Girls song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

Boardman choir gives gift of music to Robinwood students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Robinwood Lane Elementary School hosted a special guest performance on Dec. 11 - the Boardman High School choir, who performed a little holiday concert for the elementary students. Linda Smrek, the director of the Boardman High School Choral, brought her students to sing at Robinwood as part of a small tour. The choral visited other elementary schools in the Boardman school district to perform holiday songs, as well. The Boardman Singers, an all female group in glittery dresses and Santa hats, started out the show by singing “Joy to the World.” Their second song was “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” in which Santa and Rudolph made a special appearance during the song. To end their performance, the Boardman Singers acted like toy soldiers as they sang “Toy Soldiers.” The Spartan Singers, the all male group, performed next. They were very interactive with the Robinwood students, as some of the Spartan Sing-

ers tried to get the students to dance with them during one of their songs. The second song that the Spartan Singers sang, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” contained a special solo by Justin McLellan, an alumnus of Robinwood Elementary. The final group to perform was the Chorale, composed of mostly juniors and seniors with a few sophomore boys. The Chorale started with an old poem, “Christmas is Coming,” followed by an ode to the 50th Anniversary of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” During the Charlie Brown performance, the singers held Charlie Brown style Christmas trees. To end the performance, the Chorale sang “O, Holy Night.” “If any of you have a sibling in the audience, or a neighbor, this is the time to bring them up,” said Smrek. She encouraged the Robinwood students to participate in the final song and to go stand by their sibling or friend in the Chorale group. The singers concluded the event by “Carol of the Bells” as they left the gymnasium to the applause of the Robinwood students.
