The Davis Family YMCA is accepting entries for its upcoming FIVE Squared Benefit Art Show and Sale. Everyone is invited to donate up to four pieces of art, five inches by five inches square. The pieces will be offered for sale beginning Feb. 7 and continuing through March 7. Proceeds support outreach programs for underserved children in the arts and humanities. The art should not be framed, but needs to be created on a still surface which is lightweight enough to hang on a wall via sticky tack. All art must be labeled on the back with the artist’s name and title of the piece. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 17, and early entries are encouraged. More information and an entry form can be found at ymcaart.blogspot.com.

German students celebrate Krampus and St. Nikolaus Day By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
In keeping with European tradition, Canfield High School students in German Teacher Ka ren Hu m mer’s G er ma n Three and Four classes had a Krampus and St. Nikolaus Day celebration Dec. 4. According to Hummer, Krampus can be described as the anti-Santa used to encourage good behavior in children in European countries. “Krampus is Santa’s enforcer. He scares kids into being good. If the kids are not good, he says he will take them away in his sack,” Hummer said. For the celebration, students were encouraged to bake traditional German cookies and treats, such as cinnamon stars, linzer cookies and Krampus bread. “The students researched traditional German cookie recipes so they could make them for the celebration. In class, we are expanding our food vocabulary, so this was a great opportunity for the students to find German recipes for cookies and tie
that in with our Krampus and St. Nikolaus Day celebration,” Hummer said. Hummer said the students also decorated the classroom for the celebration and one student dressed as Krampus and another as St. Nikolaus. Students were able to take photos with both Krampus and St. Nikolaus. “The students did a great job making posters and decorating the classroom for today. Natalie Brown made the Krampus head and put together a great costume and Zach Gierlach dressed up as St. Nikolaus for us today,” Hummer said. This year, Krampus Night was celebrated Dec. 5, the eve of St. Nikolas Day in Europe. St. Nikolaus Day was Dec. 6, with “der Nikolaus” bringing some small gifts, such as sweets and chocolate, to the children. “I like to make learning fun and enjoyable at the same time and we did that today with our own Krampus and St. Nikolaus Neighbors | Abby Slanker Day celebration. CVMS choirs celebrate the holidays By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Ca n f ield V i l lage Midd le School’s fifth- and sixth-grade choirs, under the direction of Stephanie Summers, kicked off the holiday season with music and singing during A Winter Concert Dec. 3. The students performed to a standing room only auditorium packed with family and friends at Canfield High School. Courtney Larson accompanied the choirs on piano. Summers welcomed the audience to the annual concert. “I would like to welcome you all to the fifth- and sixth-grade Winter Concert. Thank you for coming. We will begin our show with the fifth-grade choir and I will now turn the program over to the students,” Summers said. The fifth-grade choir opened the show with “A Solfege Christmas,” a traditional shaker hymn arranged by Cristi Cary Miller, and then performed “Here in My House,” by Aline Shader. The choir continued the show with “Merry Christmas to All,” by Dave and Jean Perry and closed their portion of the performance with “Carol of the Elves,” a Dutch folk song arranged by Janet Gardner, during which several students donned Santa hats. Throughout the performance, fifth-graders Nolan Radinsky, Katilyn Ekiert, Victoria Levonyak, Jack Davis and Taylor Morrison

The show choir then sang “Sing Me to Winter” by Julie Gardner Bray, with soloist Bridget Fekety. The sixth-grade choir filled the stage for their performance, starting with “O Come, Little Children,” with “Angels We Have Heard on High,” traditional carols arranged by Ruth Elaine Schram. The choir continued with “Deedle Deedle Dai” (Hanukkah is the Reason Why) by Lois Brownsey and Marti LunnLantz, with Tori Hartman on the
tambourine. The choir next performed “Minka” a Russian folk song with Julia Mosher on the sleigh bells. To close out the concert, the sixth-graders sang “A Holly Jolly Christmas” by Johnny Marks and arranged by Greg Gilpin. To jazz up their performance, the boys donned sunglasses and the girls played kazoos during the song. Throughout the performance, sixth-graders Olivia Leskovac, Joshua Newman, Ally Wilson, Connor Daggett and Gianna DeLucia contributed narrations. “Thank you for coming to our Winter Concert. I would like to wish everyone a great holiday season,” Summers said at the conclusion of the evening.

The Canfield Green, including the gazebo and several little trees, was glowing and was awash in Christmas lights and decorations after being lit up during the Rotary Club of Canfield’s annual Lighting of the Green Dec. 5.
Rotary hosts annual Lighting of the Green By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Santa Claus arrived in style, and with an escort from the Canfield Joint Fire District, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Canfield during the organization’s annual Lighting of the Green Dec. 5. In addition to a visit and photos with Santa, the event featured horse-drawn carriage rides, cookies, cocoa and live music at Piccadilly Parlour and candy, apples, cookies and other treats at the Township Hall. Attendees could also enjoy a tour of the Dispatch Center, a tour of the War Vet Museum and choir music at the United Methodist Church. Anthony Nacarato, Lighting of the Green chairman, welcomed the crowd, which included Rotary President Jane Perrett, Canfield Mayor Bernie Kosar Sr., Canfield Township Trustee Brian Governor, City of Canfield Council President Don Dragish Jr. and Pastor Jay Eastman of Canfield Christian Church. “Welcome and thank you for coming to our annual Lighting of the Green. I would like to thank our local businesses and families for helping to make this event great. The local businesses have been a great friend to the Rotary in helping to get the trees around the green lit. We could never do the things we get
to do in this community without their support. The little trees are sponsored by individuals, families and local businesses. They all have signs designating their donor. Through all the donations we have received for this evening, we are able to offer what we have available this evening at no cost to you,” Nacarato said as he welcomed the crowd. Nacarato encouraged the crowd to visit each venue, including the newly-refurbished War Vet Museum. “The Dispatch Center is open for tours and there is a craft and elementary school choirs at the Methodist Church, sponsored by Canfield Rotary. Of course Santa is at the Township Hall with coffee donated by Stone Fruit Coffee Company and the carriage rides, sponsored by families of Canfield Rotary, will run from Piccadilly Parlor to the Township Hall. And please visit the newly-refurbished War Vet Museum where tours and refreshments are available. Thanks to the efforts of a wonderful young man, the museum has been refurbished and upgraded,” Nacarato said. Mayor Kosar also welcomed everyone to the event. “Welcome to the Canfield community. It is a wonderful place to live. If you are visiting, welcome and have a good time
tonight. I think with all this fog, we will really need Rudolph to guide Santa’s sleigh to us tonight,” Kosar said. Pastor Eastman also greeted the crowd. “This is a time of festivities and fun as we gather together. As we watch events unfold all over the world and even in this country, we know we can feel secure in Canfield. Our city has provided a wonderful place for us. Our police men and women put their lives on the line for us and I would like to personally thank them for that,” Eastman said. After a countdown, the Green was glowing and was awash in Christmas lights and decorations. After the lighting, Santa arrived at the Green in a horse drawn carriage with an escort from the Cardinal Joint Fire District fire truck and proceeded to the Township Hall to greet all the children and have his picture taken with all of them. Local business sponsors included Farmers National Bank, Boak and Sons, Dr. Pamela Barkett DDS, Inner Circle Pizza, Something New Florist, Lane & Burke Co. LPA, Maroun’s Import Specialist, Coventry Lighting, Johnson & Johnson Law Offices, From the Heart Florist and Kim’s Confections.

Clark walked around to look at the start of each persons Boxwood tree and offered advice.
Mini Christmas trees provide lots of decoration By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a Boxwood Tree event on Dec. 10. Deby Clark led the class on how to create your own Boxwood tree decoration. Fellows Riverside Garden offers several classes on different holiday themed crafts and other decorations throughout the year. The supplies were provided by Clark and Fellows Riverside Gardens. The women attending were given a base and then were taught how to make the empty base into a full Boxwood tree. Pinecones, tree branches, plastic berries, ribbon and several sparkley and glittery decorations were available to put on the tree. Clark started the class by showing what the finished product should look like and gave some basic instructions
on how to construct the project. After Clark finished explaining how to make the tree, she had the guests start working on their own. She walked around the room offering advice and answering any questions. Some people were more comfortable with the craft than others, but they all had a fun time working on it together. “I make museum style pieces, the big ones you see, I do big wedding arrangements and I do it exactly like this,” said Clark. Learning one style of a crafting method can help someone expand their knowledge and try to incorporate that style into making other different crafts. Making the Boxwood tree provided the participants with a homemade Christmas that was more unique and fun than anything that could be purchased in a store.
