Students board Polar Express train to school By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
T he st udents at Pola nd North Preschool started their Polar Express day by taking a train to get inside the school building on Dec. 21. Mrs. Bucci, a teacher at t he school, organized t he Polar Express event for her students. Instead of having a real train like originally planned, the teachers made the train for the students to stand behind on their way into the building, due to the weather. The chance of rain eliminated the opportunit y for the real train to come to the school. Before the students could stand behind the train, they had to go see Mrs. Green to have their hands stamped. The stamp was like a ticket for the students to hop on the train. Mrs. Bucci had a whistle to blow to make a train sound to attract t he children’s attention. “We’re having hot cocoa today, they’re going to do projects related to the train and the whole story. Also, they’re wearing their pajamas, I have the story, trying to bring the whole ambiance,” said Mrs. Bucci. Another activity Mrs. Bucci and the students were looking forward to was the bell hunt. “They’re going to look for bells. They’re going to go home with the bells that say ‘Believe’,” said Bucci. Believing is a theme that is carried throughout both the book and movie versions of “The Poland Express.” Mrs. Wittenauer’s class also joined in on the fun. They wore their pajamas and took the train into the building. T he ch i ld ren had f u n spending a day relating to a popular holiday book and movie.

Poland Union Elementary School spent their last day of classes before winter break with a visit from Santa Claus, a holiday sing along and cookie decorating on Dec. 22. Santa Claus made a special trip to Union to visit all of the students in every classroom. He made sure to get a picture with every classroom. Santa also brought Mrs. Claus with him to visit the students. “Having close to 400 kids in a K-2 building, their level of excitement was through the roof,” sa id Pr i ncipa l Mi ke Masucci. Around 40-50 PTO members came to the school to help all of the students decorate cookies in the classrooms. There was icing, sprinkles and many more toppings to use for cookie decorations. “Our PTO’s incredibly supportive. They always go above and beyond for our kids and support our teachers and our staff. It’s nice to have them here,” said Masucci. To end the day, the school came together in the gymnasium to sing Christmas carols and watch funny videos that Dean Wilson, music teacher, put together. Poland Seminary High School sophomores Monica Kurjan, Laiken Maurer, Rachel Mowad, Lauren Pepperney and Marik Rogenski have been chosen to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY ) L eadersh ip Sem inar, which will take place at Youngstown State University in early June of 2016. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership mission is to recognize outstanding sophomore leaders and encourage and prepare
them to be the next generation of leaders in the country. This acclaimed international program began in 1958 when actor Hugh O’Brian returned from Africa, inspired by a nine-day visit spent working and talking with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. After returning to the USA, O’Brian decided to make his own contribution to society by establishing HOBY. He chose youth leadership as the most promising enterprise that HOBY could promote.
HOBY provides opportunities for critical thinking by promoting democracy and America’s incentive system, and by encouraging social responsibility among individuals and participating corporations. Students will learn to think critically, enhance their leadership skills, identify their own particular leadership strengths and learn more about free enterprise, volunteerism and service to community.
