Relay for Life has Feb. 2 event The Mahoning County Relay for Life will host a benefit for the American Cancer Society at Boardman Park on June 11 from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. This will be the first year for one combined event made up of the former Austintown, Boardman and Poland Relay For Life. Co-event directors, Amanda Cox, Kim Deemer, Melissa Kuttler and Stephanie Shelton, are coming together from their separate events to work to make this coming year’s Mahoning County Relay For Life a success. To kick things off, the Relay Event Leadership Team will also be hosting a Relay Rally Mixer at the Magic Tree, located at 7463 South Ave in Youngstown, on Feb. 2 from 4:3-6:30 p.m. Enjoy some food and drinks while having the opportunity to get information about the new Relay For Life. You will also be able to register your team at the event. Any new team that registers at the rally will enter a drawing for a prize. This will be a relaxed, open house type event that you won’t want to miss. Boardman Schools consider district realignment The Boardman School Board is considering a realignment of the district that would close one of our four elementary schools at the end of this school year. On Jan. 10, staff members were briefed on the basic plan. Market Elementary would close in June. While many details must still be worked out, the closure would include the following changes in the district: closing Market Street Elementary and the remaining three elementary schools would become K-3 buildings; all fourth-graders would move to Center Intermediate School, which would become a grades 4-6 building. Superintendent Saxton has also added a video to the district’s new website (https://www.boardman.k12.oh.us/) further explaining the recommended plan. Formal action is expected at the Jan. 28 Board of Education meeting.

Dr. Flo joins Ankle and Foot Care Centers Ankle and Foot Care Centers recently announced the addition of Dr. Jennifer Flo to its staff of physicians and surgeons. Dr. Flo is accepting new patients in the group’s Andover, Cornersburg and Struthers offices. With the addition of Dr. Flo, Ankle & Foot Care Centers now has 18 podiatric foot and ankle surgeons serving patients in 20 locations in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Dr. Flo specializes in diabetic foot care and wound care. In addition to treating patients in office and nursing homes, she plans to work with wound care clinics, as she is a board-certified wound care specialist.

Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500.

4-H community open house set A 4-H community open house will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the Greenford Ruritans Building at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Feb. 7. The open house is an opportunity to talk to adult 4-H leaders and current 4-H youth members and ask questions. Attendees will be able to find out more information about 4-H and how to join a club. Some of the more than 200 projects will be available to see and experience.

The Inn at Walker Mill opens new memory care facility

The Briarfield assisted living facility the Inn at Walker Mill opened a new memory care facility, Journeys, on Jan. 1.

Executive Director Amanda Rivera said that the facility has 16 apartments available for new residents who need specialized memory care.

“Our third floor its a secure memory care environment, which means that anyone can get up there but our residents can’t get off with out staff supervision just for their safety and security,” Rivera said.

She explained that Keley Ciavarella is the program director of the memory care floor.

“We have a dedicated programing director up there,” Rivera said. “She is focused with the staff on daily activities for the residents that are purposeful and meaningful.”

When a new resident plans to move to the memory care floor, Ciavarella along with a nurse do a clinical assessment and gather information on the residents social history.

Rivera said the clinical assessment is used to determine the physical abilities of the resident, while the social history helps the staff create a personalized experience for the resident.

“With dementia they prog-

ress back and begin to forget the identity that they currently have and a lot of them will see themselves as the 23-year-old who was a nurse, or a caregiver, or a mother,” Rivera said. “Kelly does a really good job working with the families to understand what they did in their life, and what big accomplishments that they had, so our staff can meet them where they’re at on their journey.”

The details help to determine what the resident is used to their day being like, according to Rivera, including details like when they usually woke up, what they ate for meals and also topics to avoid.

“So when a resident with dementia becomes frustrated or upset, knowing that their favorite thing in the world is a strawberry milk shake is important so that they don’t continue to demonstrate that behavior and they don’t continue to feel frustrated,” Rivera said.

Rivera and Ciavarella are both certified dementia practitioners, which Rivera said gave them both the background needed to think through every detail of this unit.

She said that the residents all have personalized mail boxes, with names that can change incase a resident begins to forget their current name. The name tags are also simple, red tags

that say “help”, since red is the last color a person with dementia can see.

“At meal times we do aroma therapy about a half hour prior to the meal, and then we use citrus during the meal to stimulate appetite and lavender after the meal to stimulate relaxation,” Rivera said. “The plate color that we chose, burnt orange, stimulates appetite in someone with dementia. We have thought through everything.”

The facility also includes a spa, and other luxuries to make

the lives of residents more enjoyable.

“I feel like this is unique, we have put a lot of thought behind it,” Rivera said.

Rivera said that the building will also have 234 hour nursing available starting on Jan. 14.

Summit Jammers to play Memories of a Lifetime for historical society A polka party, with music by the former Kuzman’s polka band, Summit Jammers, will take place at Kravitz’s Deli Meeting Room, locaed at 3135 Belmont Avenue in Liberty, on Jan. 19 at 10 a.m., sponsored by the Boardman William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society. The Mahoning Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution hosted its Dec. 8 meetingat the Youngstown Country Club.

Joining the chapter that night was state historian Chuck Finley PHD. who gave an informative talk on the Ohio 33, which refers to the 33 Ohio counties named for American Revolution luminaries. State Registrar Troy Bailey announced that he will be serving as chairman of the 250th Anniversary Committee that will span events of the American Revolution, celebrated from 2014-2033 and invited any ideas to be forwarded to him. Volunteers are welcome. During the meeting Chris Wentz was recognized with an award pin decorated with the American and SAR flags for his activites as chairman of the Youngstown State University ROTC committee and John Dalbec, who serves on the ROTC program, was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his many contributions to the chapter. John Phillips, chairman of the Canfield Fair committee, was also awarded with a pin in recognition for his services to the chapter. All three men serve as trustees to the Board of Management. The annual Christmas Social of the GFWC Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League took place on Dec. 3 at The Magic Tree Restaurant in Boardman. Members of the league brought diapers to be donated to Making Kids Count. Dr. Seuss books were also bought by members and donated to member Maddie Crish’s second-grade class at Jackson-Milton school for Christmas, where she concluded her student teaching. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women older than 18 and residing in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Mill Creek celebrates holidays with seasonal centerpiece

Mill Creek Park celebrated the holiday season with a holiday centerpiece making event on Dec. 18.

Community members gathered at Fellows Riverside Garden to create a garden fresh, holiday themed craft run by Marie Borocz.

Borocz, an educator at Mill Creek Park and the owner of Home Stead Florist in Girard, said that it was a fun way to get into the holiday spirit.

The pa rk prov ided f resh pi ne, g re en s, c a r nat ion s, mums and more for community members to use to create their center pieces.

“We use a lot of fresh flowers that aren’t going to go bad quickly, to have a fresh spelling holiday decoration this year,” Borocz said.

The park provided vases for all members to take their art home with.

Borocz said she has been working at the park, creating art classes like this, since 1998.

“I really love what working here and getting to do these classes,” Borocz said.

Dec. 28 Domestic violence: Police arrested Asia S. Laury of Market Street, Boardman, on a domestic-violence warrant after having responded to a loud argument at a Tiffany Boulevard motel. The charge stems from a Sept. 22 situation in which her boyfriend alleged Laury, 30, punched his face with a set of brass knuckles during an argument.

Dec. 27 Dog bite: A Youngstown woman told authorities a large pit bull bit her as she walked her dog on Sylvia Lane. The victim required seven stitches to her right hand, a report said.

Theft: A man reportedly stole a shirt and a pair of jeans from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Dec. 28 Arrest: After receiving a complaint about someone soliciting for money at a South Avenue bank, officers took into custody Jesse R. Spragling, 42, of Sherwood Avenue, Youngstown. He was wanted on a Liberty Township probationviolation warrant.

Criminal mischief: Someone in the 4000 block of Glenwood Avenue entered a vehicle in which items were later found strewn about.

Police found no signs of forced entry, and nothing appeared to be missing, they said.

Employee theft: Authorities arrested Brittany M. Burin, 27, at her Sheridan Road apartment on a theft warrant after a manager with Pier 1 Imports, 550 Boardman-Poland Road, checked via computer Burin’s sales history Dec. 19 while the Boardman woman was employed at the retail store and alleged having discovered 14 suspected fraudulent cash refunds during a six-week period.

Burin allegedly reprinted receipts and memorized transaction numbers on older ones from sales she made, then committed fraudulent returns and pocketed the money, a police report stated.

Theft by deception: A woman in her late 20s or early 30s reportedly committed a short-change scam at Hobby Lobby, 1136 BoardmanPoland Road, resulting in an undisclosed loss.

Theft/vandalism: A manager with Verizon Wireless, 650 BoardmanPoland Road, told police a man in his early to mid-30s likely stole a $1,000 cellphone after having cut a security tether cord from it.

Theft: Jessica L. Kumrow of Bend Road, Mercer, Pa., was charged with stealing $152 worth of property that included a bottle of rum from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Kumrow, 36, also was wanted on a Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department warrant charging her with aggravated possession of drugs.

Citation: A traffic stop near Shields Road resulted in a minor-misdemeanor citation charging Marquell L. Armour, 19, of West Boulevard, Boardman, with having a bag of suspected marijuana and a partially smoked piece of suspected marijuana.

Fraud: A Melrose Avenue woman told police she unwittingly deposited a $1,990 fraudulent check and electronically transferred $830 of the amount to the person who had sent it to the accuser before her bank said the check was invalid and that the woman was the victim of a scam.

Littering: The owner of a business in the 6100 block of Market Street reported someone had left several cardboard boxes and plastic containers of debris on his property.

Theft: The landlord of a South Schenley Avenue apartment building alleged a former tenant took an $800 refrigerator after having been evicted.

Dec. 29 Arrest: After having responded to a vehicular crash with possible injuries near Tiffany Boulevard and South Avenue, authorities took into custody Channelle A. Lawrence, 22, who listed Youngstown addresses on Plazaview Court and West Judson Avenue. Lawrence was wanted on a Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department warrant accusing her of failing to appear in court on a theft charge.

Assaults: A Youngstown woman alleged her former boyfriend assaulted her at his Erskine Avenue home.

Also, the man alleged a second woman who accompanied his former girlfriend assaulted him.

Criminal damaging: Southern Park Mall security personnel told officers two juveniles, 14 and 15, had damaged a door frame, likely by knocking the molding off.

Theft: Police responded to a possible fight at a Tiffany Boulevard motel, where they arrested Jaylyn S. Coleman of Willis Avenue, Youngstown, on a theft charge, related to a shoplifting situation Sept. 16, 2017, in which $142 worth of shirts was taken from Target, 417 BoardmanPoland Road. Coleman, 29, also was wanted on a Liberty warrant charging her with a probation violation.

Menacing: A physician with a BoardmanCanfield Road doctor’s office reported having received a letter a family member opened that was derogatory and threatening in nature.

Dec. 30 Arrest: Police responded to a possible domestic situation at an Arlene Avenue home before taking William P. McCawley, 35, of Arlene, Boardman, into custody on warrants charging him with one count each of resisting arrest and obstructing official business. The charges were related to a Dec. 20 incident at a Market Street motel in which officers conducting a welfare check alleged McCawley had pulled from them, then refused to follow commands while attempting to break free.

Arrest: After responding to possible suicidal threats at a Forest Lake Drive apartment, officers charged Julia A. West, 46, of Forest Lake Drive, Boardman, with obstructing official business and resisting arrest. West refused to get out of her vehicle and follow other commands while struggling with police,

a report stated.

Assault: An Ambridge, Pa., man alleged a woman punched him and scratched his face as he ended their relationship at a South Avenue motel.

Auto theft: A 2012 Honda Civic was stolen in the 1900 block of Wolosyn Circle.

Theft: Stacey A. Labenske, 37, of Riley Street, Struthers, was charged in the theft of $76 worth of clothing, including a sweater, from Gabe’s, 850 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A 17-year-old Youngstown boy was accused of stealing from Walmart $126 worth of merchandise that included a mobile phone.

Domestic violence: Michael A. Yount of East Midlothian Boulevard, Boardman, was charged with the crime after his girlfriend alleged that during an argument related to bathing their child, Yount, 36, shoved her in the chest and squeezed the accuser’s neck, rendering her unable to breathe, before she broke free and called 911.

Theft: Someone in the 2000 block of Wolosyn Circle broke into a vehicle before removing a duffel bag that contained a laptop computer and a set of keys.

Citation: Officers cited Cassandra Santiago, 24, of Market Street, Boardman, on a charge of knowingly soliciting for money without a permit.

Theft: A Youngstown woman discovered perfume, a pair of jeans and other property had been removed from her room at a Market Street motel.

Residents celebrate the season with holiday party

Beeghly Oaks Center for Rehabilitation and Healing hosted their annual holiday party on Dec. 19.

Residents celebrated the holiday season with a range of entertainment from around the community.

Traci McCoy, Recreation Director of Beeghly Oaks, said that since she started two years ago it has been her goal to host a big celebration each year for the residents. Fifth-graders from Boardman’s chorus visited the residents to perform Christmas songs for them.

“They had little reindeer, and it was adorable to residents really loved it,” McCoy said.

A band, Noble Cause, also played for residents during the day. McCoy said that Santa Claus also made a trip to visit residents of Beeghly Oaks. Santa greeted residents and posed for photos with them throughout the event.

A portion of the Boardman High School wind ensemble also came to Beeghly Oaks to play holiday music for residents.

“They sang Christmas carols, and they had cookies and punch,” McCoy said. “The residents love it.”

Along with the holiday party, McCoy said that all residents wake up on Christmas with a gift.

“Christmas morning we pass out gifts to all the residents so they have something to open,” McCoy said.

Boardman community members bake fresh cookies for Santa

Boardman Park hosted its annual Cookies with Santa event on Dec. 19 at the Lariccia Family Community Center.

Karen McCallum, the Recreation Director at Boardman Park, said this is the 14th year the park has hosted this event.

“It’s great, it’s just a fun holiday tradition,” McCallum said.

During the event children and their families rolled dough, cooked and decorated their own set of cookies. McCallum said that the park has a range of icing and sprinkles for families to use to decorate their cookies.

“The best part is that they get to do all of the fun stuff and we clean up the mess,” McCallum said.

Children were also able to dec-

orate pre-made cookies while they waited for their batch to cook.

The park also provided a box for children to decorate to take their cookies home for Santa in.

“It’s a lot of fun, a lot of community members look at it as a regular holiday tradition,” McCallum said.

Along with cookie decorating community members were able to eat a Grinch themed dinner while watching “The Grinch that Stole Christmas.”

Green pancakes and sausage were available for community members to eat.

McCallum said that the park also provided holiday crafts and other entertainment for attendees.

“It’s a lot of fun, we always have a good time here,” McCallum said.

Trespassing: Police received information that three people had tried to enter a vehicle in the 2000 block of Wolosyn Circle before items in that and a few other cars were found strewn about, though it was unknown if anything was missing from any of the vehicles.

Recovered property: A 1999 Dodge Dakota truck was found in the 2300 block of Shetland Avenue after a Sheridan Road man had reported the vehicle stolen.

Theft: Roughly $10 worth of loose change was taken from a car someone had entered in the 2000 block of Wolosyn Circle.

Theft: A Palo Verde Drive man saw that his vehicle had been entered and contents from the glove compartment were strewn about.

Dec. 31 Theft: Jessica S. Chapman, 39, who listed East Liverpool addresses on St. Clair and Thompson avenues, was charged with stealing about $130 worth of items, including a pair of women’s jeans, from the JCPenney store in Southern Park Mall.

Menacing: A Tamarisk Trail woman alleged her former boyfriend has sent and made numerous threatening text messages and calls, and threatened to come to her residence after their recent breakup.

Theft: A man discovered a box that contained $6,008 worth of property was missing from a locker he had rented from a South Avenue storage facility.

POLICE REPORTS Theft: A 14-year-old McDonough, Ga., girl was accused of taking two women’s jackets from Macy’s in Southern Park Mall.

Menacing: A Sciota Avenue woman told officers several juveniles near Market Street and Meadowbrook Avenue had threatened her juvenile son.

Drugs: A traffic stop near Southern Park Mall resulted in the arrest of Kevin R. Massie, 22, of Griswold Drive, Boardman, on a felony trafficking-in-drugs charge after police alleged having found in a backpack 702 grams of suspected marijuana, along with a bag that contained smaller bags.

Theft: A Prestwick Drive man reported items that included a smartphone stolen from his vehicles.

Trespassing: A woman found a wallet after someone had reportedly entered several vehicles in a carport at a Glenwood Avenue apartment complex.

Theft: Officers in the 6800 block of Market Street picked up Dustin L. Desmith, 33, who was wanted on a theft warrant.

Desmith, of Market Street, Boardman, was accused of stealing $14 worth of batteries last month from Dollar General, 271 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Recovered property: Authorities reportedly found a firearm and other evidence while investigating a report that several males who fled from officers had tried to break into vehicles in the 4000 block of Hudson Drive.

Misuse of a credit card: A Valley View Drive man found 10 fraudulent charges against his checking account that totaled $3,929 and apparently originated in Paris.

Jan. 4 Arrest: The Ohio State Highway Patrol in Columbiana handed to Boardman police Hollie C. Reese, 28, of Maple Drive, East Liverpool, who faced an inducing-panic charge after authorities responded last November to a reported drug overdose at a Windham Court restaurant, where an employee alleged having found her unresponsive in a restroom. Reese was given two doses of naloxone and admitted to medical personnel she had snorted heroin, a police report stated.

Criminal damaging: A Devonshire Drive woman discovered an entry door from her garage and a door knob were not closing or functioning properly.

Theft: Kelli S. Ketterer, 37, of Sierra Madre Trail, Boardman, was charged with stealing a $48 pair of jeans from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A license plate was removed from a vehicle in the 1300 block of Doral Drive.

Theft: Officers took Nicholas C. Scharringhausen, 18, into custody at his Indianola Road home in Boardman on a felony-theft warrant, related to a Sept.

30, 2018, incident in which a man reported $2,255 worth of equipment and other merchandise missing from his truck in the 7400 block of Becky Court.

Theft: A Ron Joy Place man noticed a temporary tag missing from his car.

Theft: Authorities were dispatched to Boardman Area Court on Market Street to take custody of David Kopnitsky of New Castle Road, Lowellville, who was wanted on a theft charge. Kopnitsky, 38, was accused of taking $50 from a tip jar Jan. 15, 2018, at Wetzel’s Pretzels, 1300 Doral Drive.

Jan. 5 Burglary: To an apartment in the 90 block of Sciota Avenue, from which a $300

Theft/drugs: Authorities charged Katie L. Stoner, 27, of Syling Street, New Castle, Pa., with theft and possessing criminal tools, and John E. Colbert, 30, of Wampum, Pa., with theft as well as drug abuse and possessing drug-abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia after $202 worth of property was stolen from Walmart. Found in Colbert’s pocket were a spoon with burn marks and a needle, both common in drug use, and a substance that appeared to be heroin, a report stated.

Robbery: A Walmart loss-prevention official told police a man in his early 20s struck her chest area then fled on foot as she and another official tried to detain him after he reportedly had stolen $276 worth of property. The woman was not injured, however.

Theft: A man reportedly stole an energy drink and cigars from Dollar General, 5953 South Ave. Theft: A woman reported a kitchen table and various household items stolen while she was in the process of moving from her Sciota Avenue residence.

Stolen property: Officers responded to a Doral Drive big-box store regarding a possibly stolen wallet before charging Eric M. Kibler, 30, of Neeld Road, East Palestine, with two counts of receiving stolen property after a Struthers woman had discovered her wallet stolen Dec. 23.

Theft/drugs: Joseph A. McCudden, 24, of Allen Drive, Boardman, was charged with theft as well as possessing drugabuse instruments and drug paraphernalia, and Christopher M. Gause, 29, of Seventh Street, Struthers, faced the same drug charges, along with one count of receiving stolen property after $179 worth of clothing was taken from Kohl’s, and Gause was accused of trying to sell the stolen goods to Plato’s Closet, 400 Boardman-Poland Road.

A vehicle search during a traffic stop a short time later turned up a spoon with suspected drug residue and an uncapped syringe, authorities alleged.

Theft/drugs: Police conducting a traffic stop in the 5600 block of South Avenue took into custody Shawn D. Zinn, 46, on theft and drug-abuse charges after three sound bars had been stolen from Walmart. The Malvern, Ohio, man also had a controlled substance in his car, a report indicated.

Jan. 6 Criminal damaging: A car in the 40 block of Jennette Drive was found with a smashed front driver’s-side window.

Theft: Police at Walmart arrested Eric C. Kuhn, 35, on a theft warrant. Kuhn, of Mathews Road, Boardman, was accused of taking $87 worth of property last month from the big-box store.

Theft: Xavier G. Williams, 19; Nehemiah A. Bennett, also 19; and Javon T. Bell, 20, all of East Philadelphia Avenue, Youngstown, were charged in the theft of eight DVDs valued at $142 from Walmart.

Domestic violence: Bryan J. Martin of Argyle Avenue, Boardman, was charged with the crime after his girlfriend alleged that during an argument, Martin, 39, had struck her face, leaving a small cut and moderate swelling.

Theft: Wilfredo C. Rosado, 36, of East Indianola Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with intentionally failing to self-scan $201 worth of food and candles while in Walmart.

Sprout Club children become mad scientists

Mill Creek Park hosted its monthly Sprout Club meeting on Dec. 13. Park educator Lynn Zocolo ran the event, with a mad science theme.

“We are doing science experiments,” Zocolo said. “If they get a little dirty, that’s even better.”

Sprout Club is a program for preschool-age students, with themes changing month to month. For this program, children got to perform a number of science experiments. Those included testing whether items will sink or float, blowing up ivory soap in the microwave and creating “elephant tooth paste,” according to Zocolo.

“They are all going to wear goggles and they will be able to play with all of that stuff,” she said.

Children were also able to create a fizzy Jell-O experiment and examine a “magic leak proof bag.”

“We will fill a regular plastic bag with water and put pencils through it and it will not leak,” Zocolo said. “It gets them that hands on learning experience.”

During each event students get a special treat, this month being a special concoction of Jell-O and ice cream.

“I don’t go into any of the science behind all this because they are preschoolers we are just going to have fun,” Zocolo said.

She said that it helps get students thinking about science concepts down the road.

“I see some children at their very first class they are so shy and about half way through they get excited and say ‘Ms. Lynn I did this, or that.’”

The class is part of a three part series, at the end of which children receive a trinket from the park for their graduation.

“We have fun, and that’s what I want for them, just to have fun,” Zocolo said.

Next month’s programs are ice cream and beaver themed.

“I always have a wonderful group of volunteers that help,” Zocolo said. “That’s very important because I need all the help I can get.”

Boys varsity basketball win The Boardman High School boys varsity basketball team defeated Lakeside on Jan. 8 with a score of 78-51. Ethan Andersen had a season high 18 points to lead the Spartans along with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Derrick Anderson had a good night with 17 points and seven assists. Che Trevena was the other Spartan in double figures with 12 points. Tommy Fryda got two 3’s on his way to eight points. Daeone Marine finished with seven points. Charlie Davis, Shaun Eicher and Connor Miller each had four points and Jimmy Goske rounded out the scoring with two points. Zach Ryan had a good floor game with three steals, four rebounds and four assists.

Freshman boys face off against Austintown The freshman boys basketball team faced off against AAC rival Austintown Fitch on Jan. 7 and came away with the victory, 45-40. After falling behind by a couple points in the first quarter, the Spartans found success in the second quarter, outscoring Fitch by seven to take the lead into halftime. Austintown came out aggressive in the third quarter, converting several Boardman turnovers into points. They were able to sustain the momentum throughout the quarter and had a three point lead going into the fourth.

The Boardman freshman then took control of the game in the final quarter, pulling away from the Falcons with a 14-3 scoring run. The run was ignited by two huge 3-pointers by Ben Alvarico and one

by Anthony Hightower. The Spartans were able to hold off a late scramble by Fitch to seal the victory. Leading scorers for Boardman were Cam Thompson with 11 points and Alvarico with 10. Luke Ryan and Terence Thomas added six points each and Hightower and DJ Evans had five each. Rounding out the scoring was Carter Mraz with two points.

Girls JV team beats Lakeside, 43-17 The girls junior varsity basketball team was victorious over Lakeside on Jan. 7. Boardman finished the match with a score of 43-17. A nice defensive effort kept the Dragons to two points in the first and third quarters. A team effort contributed to a nice win as the Spartans put 11 players in the score column.

The maroon and white were led by Bailey Moore’s eight, Tanna Ortega’s seven and Emma Tokarsky’s six points. Madi Larch, Ryleigh Neill, Priya Shah and Tini Zheng each dropped four on the Dragons. Emily Olexa and Emily Rutledge each added a basket for their two points while Kenne-

dy Furano and Bella Larch added a free throw to round out the scoring. Signe Renstrom and Paige Jankowski’s rebounding and steals also contributed to several scores for Boardman.

Seventh-grade boys win The seventh-grade boys white team put together a complete team effort to beat Lakeside on Jan. 7 with a score of 48-32. Jack Ericson led all scorers with 19 points, while Jaden Payen and Landon Mitchell each finished with eight. DeMayne Earvin and Noah Ziak added four points and JT Long and John Burton both finished with two. Ryan Conti scored one point to finish the scoring and Big Money Jack Neill owned the paint with his strong defensive play.

Girls basketball claims success against Lakeside The Boardman girls’ basketball team improved to 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in the AAC Red Tier with a 75-23 victory over the visiting Dragons of Lakeside on Jan. 7. The Spartans jumped out to a 32-2 lead after one and never looked back.

Boardman was led in scoring by Raegan Burkey who had a game high 22 points.

She was perfect from 3-point range, going four for four beyond the arc. Three other Spartans netted double digits as Cate Green, Maria Torres and Serene Khatib all hit for 10 points. Green had five steals and Torres had four to go along with their points. Katie Stamp scored seven points, while Cailyn Covan had five.

Bailey Moore and Alicia Saxton each had four points and Kennedy Furano rounded out the scoring with three. Sharp shooting was the reason for the offensive explosion as the Spartans shot more than 40 percent from the 3-point line and 92 percent from the free throw line.

Eighth-grade boys team defeats Lakeside The Boardman boys eighth-grade basketball white team beat Lakeside 53-22 on Jan. 7. After a neck-and-neck start, Boardman’s defense clamped down on the Dragons, allowing only nine points in the remaining three quarters.

Offensively, the Spartans were once again led by Alex Micco with 17 points and seven rebounds. Guards Cam Stanley and Ahmir Colpetro scored 14 and 11, respectively. Isaiah Torres had his biggest output of the year by contributing 10 points.

Boardman High School wrestlers fall to Canfield The Boardman High School boys wrestling team fell to Canfield with a score of 58-12 on Jan. 9. Sean O’Horo won his 18th match with a pin and Tyler Rea and Tristan Hutchko won decisions.

All three are freshman.

Knepper Jr., 44, of Hazel Street, Girard, surrendered on a criminal-damaging charge after a St. Clair Shores, Mich., man discovered earlier this month that the passenger-side mirror had been torn from his vehicle while he stayed at a South Avenue motel.

Criminal damaging: A Youngstown woman at a Doral Drive big-box store noticed a key had been used to damage the finish on her vehicle’s driver’s side door.

Domestic violence: Trace M. Johnson, 27, of South Schenley Avenue, Boardman, was charged with domestic violence and obstructing official business after a fight in which his fiance alleged Johnson had punched his nose, then grabbed and threw the accuser by the shirt, resulting in redness to his neck area. Johnson also refused to come out of a bedroom and speak to police, which hampered their investigation, a report showed.

Theft by deception: Melissa A. Klema of Market Street, Boardman, faced a misdemeanor theft-by-deception charge after a cab driver in the 7200 block of Market Street told police Klema, 55, had refused to pay a $35 fare. She also was wanted on a Trumbull County warrant.

Jan. 7 Arrest: Officers answered a 911 call about someone shooting a gun in a nearby wooded area before charging Nicholas A. Dudley, 29, of Glenwood

Avenue, Boardman, with one misdemeanor count each of inducing panic and making false alarms. Dudley, who appeared to be intoxicated, made multiple 911 calls with the false claim that someone had pointed a gun at him and was shooting a firearm in the area, police alleged.

Assault: A Country Club Avenue woman alleged that during an argument with her former boyfriend, he bit two of her fingers and choked her, then threw the accuser to the ground and elbowed her repeatedly in the back of her head.

Theft: William J. Howe Jr., 27, was taken into custody at a Tiffany Boulevard motel on a theft charge. Howe, of Eighth Street, Struthers, was accused of failing to pay a $43 cab fare for a ride from a U.S. Route 224 gas station to Youngstown.

Dog bite: A woman reported a German shepherd bit the back of her leg as she walked her dog near Prestwick Drive.

Theft: A man noticed his wallet missing as he shopped at a Boardman-Canfield Road discount store.

Possible theft: A Canfield woman reported her wallet lost or stolen at a Doral Drive big-box store.

Jan. 8 Pursuit: A motorcycle driver reportedly led police on a chase that reached speeds between 60 and 70 mph after having refused to pull over for them near Midlothian Boulevard and before authorities terminated the pursuit on Youngstown’s South Side.

Joseph and Clara Fusillo of Boardman recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a family dinner hosted by their children at The Lake Club in Poland.

The couple’s children are Deanna Fusillo of Boardman and Joseph (Melina) Fusillo of Canfield. Their grandchildren, Julian and Kenna Fusillo and Peter and Alex Hernandez, and greatgrandson, Micah Fusillo, complete their family.

Mr. Fusillo married the former Clara Pellegrini on Nov. 23, 1968, at St. Charles Church in Boardman.

Mrs. Fusillo has been a self-employed hairdresser for 54 years. She works at Shear Elegance in Boardman and at Burlington.

Mr. Fusillo retired from General Motors. He also was the owner of the Vista

A reception followed at Zen. Dr. David and Donna Bernstein of Loveland are the bride’s parents.

The groom is the son of Sam and Janet Pitzulo of Canfield.

The bride wore an ivory, A-line gown with a lace bodice and scalloped, Vneckline with lace back detail.

Kendall Banks, sister of the bride, was the matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Dana Allen, sister of the groom; Chrisley Scott; Ally Degnovivo; and Nichole Aurand.

The attendants wore gray dresses in various styles.

Paul Sabol performed the duties of best man. The groomsmen were Joseph Burch, Sean Brickner, Jason Murdoch and Alex Swick. The nephew of the bride, Liam Banks, was the ring bearer.

Mrs. Pitzulo graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in community health services. She is a systems change specialist for Optum.

The groom also graduated from OU with a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic. He is a chiropractor in Greensville.

The couple honeymooned in Aruba and reside in Greenville.

A post-nuptial dinner celebration took place Oct. 14 at The Vineyards at Pine Lake.

Miss Farr, Mr. Stratis will marry next May girard

Nicholas Barber, cousin of the groom, was the ring bearer.

Mrs. Moff graduated from Kent State University with an associate degree in veterinary technology and is a registered veterinary technician at Red Star Veterinary Clinic in East Canton.

A graduate of Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, Mr. Moff is a transmission system operator for First Energy in Akron.

The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and reside in Uniontown.

Robert and Saundra Farr of Girard are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Stephanie Farr, to Anthony Stratis, both of Canfield.

The prospective groom’s parents are Dimitrios and Patricia Stratis of Canfield.

The ceremony will take place May 25, 2019, at Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Campbell. A reception will follow that evening at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown. Invitations will be issued for both events.

The bride-elect graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She is a store manager at Stephanie Leigh Bridal in Girard.

Mr. Stratis graduated from Akron of applied politics. He is an account University with a bachelor’s degree in consultant at Turning Technologies in political science and a master’s degree Youngstown.
