Incoming freshman orientation meeting There will be an orientation meeting for all eighth-graders and their parents who reside in the Poland School District on Feb. 7 in the Poland High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Poland High School’s counselors will provide information which will assist incoming freshmen make wise decisions about their course selection. Topics to be covered will include graduation requirements, end of course exams/graduation points, course levels, curriculum choices and placement tests, postsecondary/college entrance requirements, athletic participation rules/OHSAA and extracurricular options. Fundraising event for Celebrate Poland The committee that plans the annual Celebrate Poland festival is sponsoring a “Breakfast, Baskets and More” event on Jan. 26 at 8 a.m. at the Poland Seminary High School cafeteria. The event concludes at noon. The breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit, pastries and drinks by donation. In addition to the opportunity to bid on baskets, there is a chance to win a 50 inch Smart TV at six tickets for $5. Tickets may be purchased in advance from any committee member or by calling 330-651-2999. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. You need not be present to win. All proceeds from the breakfast will go toward funding the non-profit Celebrate Poland community event, which will take place on June 28 and 29.

The Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County welcomed Pressed Coffee Bar and Eatery to the location with an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Jan. 10.

Co-owners of Pressed, Pamela Vonbergen and Frank Tuscano, were present at the event, cutting the ribbon to the new

location.

“We have the one location downtown for four years and we have been well received by the community there and we decided it would be a good idea to expand,” Tuscano said.

The location has been open in the library since Oct. 29.

“We have had great feedback, everyone who has been here has loved it,” Tuscano said. “We’re just trying to get the word out and let people

The location was redecorated before Oct. 29 by Tuscano and Vonbergen.

“Its really is Frank’s vision,” Vonbergen said. “It’s all in his head, he does a great job.”

The renovat ion included new light fixtures, tables and wall decorations for the sitting area, along with a total re-hall of Pressed’s new facilities.

The location currently has 10 employees, some of which

Cardinal Mooney hosts 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner On Feb. 17, Cardinal Mooney High School will host its 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. More than a book club Gather at the Poland library on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. to discuss the stories and information you are currently reading and researching. Whether you listen to audiobooks, read novels, read the newspaper or research online, share your sources and learn about others. This event is for adults.

Poland to have kindergarten registration on March 2 Registration for children entering kindergarten in Poland Local Schools this fall will take place on March 2 and 9.

All kindergarten registrations will take place at Union Elementary School, located at 30 Riverside Drive. Registration will take place from 9 a.m. until noon on both days.

Children presently enrolled in Union Kindergartens do not reregister for first grade.

Parents can register their children for the preschool and after school care programs at Union Elementary on these dates.

New students, entering Poland Schools next fall, in grades 1-5, may register at this time as well.

It is not necessary to bring your

child or siblings to the registration process.

Parents or guardians must provide the following information in original forms: the child’s birth certificate and Social Security Card, the child’s immunization records, proof of residency (mortgage documents, house closing papers or rental agreement), parent identification (drivers license and two current utility bills or credit card statements) and custody papers, if applicable. There items must be present at the time of registration. No registration papers will be given out before March 2.

A child entering kindergarten must be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 1 to be eligible for

admission. Those entering first grade must be 6 years of age on or before Aug. 1. If a child attended another school for kindergarten and has a birthday after Aug. 1, parents of that child will be referred to the school psychologist before that child can be enrolled.

A screen i ng prog ra m is planned for April 2-3. Parents will be given an appointment time for the screening during the registration process. It is important that all incoming kindergarten students are registered and screened.

The Youngstownarea G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this disease.

Holy Family School hosted its annual Spelling Bee on Jan. 8. Each homeroom in grades 4-8 had classroom spelling competitions in the weeks previous to determine their class representative in the school bee. Nicholas Klindworth (fourth grade), Cameron Hackstedde (fifth grade), Cameron Burk (sixth), Alex Sfara (sixth), Abe Rogers (seventh) and Will Varley (eighth) each represented their homeroom class. Mill Creek celebrates holidays with seasonal centerpiece

Mill Creek Park celebrated the holiday season with a holiday centerpiece making event on Dec. 18.

Community members gathered at Fellows Riverside Garden to create a garden fresh, holiday themed craft run by Marie Borocz. Borocz, an educator at Mill Creek Park and the owner

of Home Stead Florist in Girard, said that it was a fun way to get into the holiday spirit.

The park provided fresh pine, greens, carnations, mums and more for community members to use to create their center pieces.

“We use a lot of fresh flowers that aren’t going to go bad quickly, to have a fresh spelling holiday decoration this year,” Borocz said.

The park provided vases for all members to take their art home with.

Borocz said she has been working at the park, creating art classes like this, since 1998.

“I really love what working here and getting to do these classes,” Borocz said.

Kindergarten readiness Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of January, the stations focus on social and emotional development, which is about learning how to manage feelings, manage friendships and solve problems. Before kindergarten, children should be able to recognize and identify their own emotions and the emotions of others. They should also be able to communicate a range of emotions in socially accepted ways. The kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. MCCTC offer aviation maintenance Neighbors | Submitted

Students in the aviation maintenance program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center have a new set of wings to work on this school year thanks to a museum in Tennessee.

The A23 Fixed Wing Single Engine airplane was donated by the Beechcraft Heritage Museum in Tullahoma, Tenn. to be used as a training tool for the students enrolled in the program at MCCTC, and are working towards their Airframe and Powerplant Certificate. The single engine airplane was delivered last month and students will have the chance to get hands-on with it soon. The aviation program at MCCTC is a twoyear program where students have the opportunity to receive their Airframe and Powerplant Certificate after completing the program.

MCCTC is the only high school that offers this program in the state of Ohio east of Columbus and is a savings of $30,000 to the student.

The Poland Lions Club recently noted its appreciation for the community in helping it make its annual blanket drive a success. Through this joint effort, 40 blankets were donated through the Pold Food Pantry.

Mill Creek Park hosted its monthly Sprout Club meeting on Dec. 13.

Park educator Lynn Zocolo ran the event, with a mad science theme.

“We are doing science experi-

ments,” Zocolo said. “If they get a little dirty, that’s even better.”

Sprout Club is a program for preschool-age students, with themes changing month to month. For this program, children got to perform a number of science experiments. Those included testing whether items will sink or float, blowing up ivory

soap in the microwave and creating “elephant tooth paste,” according to Zocolo.

“They are all going to wear goggles and they will be able to play with all of that stuff,” she said.

“We will fill a regular plastic bag with water and put pencils through it and it will not leak,” Zocolo said. “It gets them that hands on learning experience.”

During each event students get a special treat, this month being a special concoction of Jell-O and ice cream.

“I don’t go into any of the science behind all this because they are preschoolers we are just going to have fun,” Zocolo said.

She said that it helps get students thinking about science concepts down the road.

“I see some children at their very first class they are so shy and about half way through they get excited and say ‘Ms. Lynn I did this, or that.’”

The class is part of a three part series, at the end of which chil-

dren receive a trinket from the park for their graduation.

“We have fun, and that’s what I want for them, just to have fun,” Zocolo said.

Next month’s programs are ice cream and beaver themed.

“I always have a wonderful group of volunteers that help,” Zocolo said. “That’s very important because I need all the help I can get.”

Assistant Chief Engineer

WFMJ-TV is looking for an Assistant Chief Engineer.

The Assistant Chief Engineer will assist with overseeing the day to day operations of the Engineering Department and is responsible for the maintenance of all broadcast technology and equipment at the studio, and when needed will assist the Transmitter/RF Supervisor in the maintenance of our Comark Parallax solid state transmitters.

Duties include: Manage the day-to-day operations including, scheduling, assigning tasks. maintenance, and troubleshooting the various broadcast systems. Assist when needed with satellite feeds, remotes, Florical Automation, Utah Scientific master control and router. Experience with Telestream Vantage for traffic and syndication. Expertise in Ross Overdrive, Vision switcher, and Xpressions. Work with the Chief Engineer, General Manager, and station ownership in the planning and acquisition of equipment for engineering projects. Keep up with current FCC regulations and ensure compliance. It is imperative the Assistant Chief Engineer be self-motivated and follow current broadcast trends. Be the primary point of call for emergencies.

Happily Ever After The Fusillos celebrate golden anniversary BOARDMAN

Joseph and Clara Fusillo of Boardman recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a family dinner hosted by their children at The Lake Club in Poland.

The couple’s children are Deanna Fusillo of Boardman and Joseph (Melina) Fusillo of Canfield. Their grandchildren, Julian and Kenna Fusillo and Peter and Alex Hernandez, and greatgrandson, Micah Fusillo, complete their family.

Mr. Fusillo married the former Clara Pellegrini on Nov. 23, 1968, at St. Charles Church in Boardman.

Mrs. Fusillo has been a self-employed hairdresser for 54 years. She works at Shear Elegance in Boardman and at Burlington.

Mr. Fusillo retired from General Motors. He also was the owner of the Vista

Lounge in Youngstown and the former owner of Fusillo Flooring before retiring in 2005. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. The couple are members of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Basilica in Youngstown.

The bride wore a fit-and-flare lace gown with a sweetheart, illusion lace neckline and cap sleeves. The tulle skirt featured a chapel-length train, and the sheer illusion back was adorned with lace appliques and accented with covered buttons.

Kristyn Svetlak, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor.

The bridesmaids were Kayla Babos, cousin of the bride; Sallee Misnik; and Logan and Kristi Moff, the groom’s sisters.

The attendants wore grape-colored dresses.

Brian Stahl held the responsibilities of best man.

Tyler Moff, brother of the groom, and Rick Svetlak, brother of the bride, were the groomsmen.

The groom also graduated from OU with a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic. He is a chiropractor in Greensville.

The couple honeymooned in Aruba and reside in Greenville.

The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and reside in Uniontown.

The ceremony will take place May 25, 2019, at Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Campbell. A reception will follow that evening at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown. Invitations will be issued for both events.

The bride-elect graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She is a store manager at Stephanie Leigh Bridal in Girard.

Mr. Stratis graduated from Akron of applied politics. He is an account University with a bachelor’s degree in consultant at Turning Technologies in political science and a master’s degree Youngstown.
