Eighth grade students from Austintown Middle School learned about different dental techniques during their visit to the St. Elizabeth Dental Clinic on Jan. 6.
DENTISTRY Continued from Page 3
“We get high schoolers involved in seeking interest in the medical community,” said attending dentist Dr. Jenelle Fleagle. “We go through the different fields with them to see if they’d be interested in that.” The students spend between
one to two hours at St. Elizabeth exploring the mobile dental van and being able to have hands-on learning with the various dental tools. The students are separated into groups and visit each station the dentists have set up. “We set up stations so they can rotate and actually feel the material and do blood pressure on each other. They learn how to set teeth, and wax the denture teeth

and then see the mobile van,” said Fleagle. There are two vans that are used for the St. Elizabeth mobile clinic that visits places from schools to nursing homes five to six days a week. The vans provide affordable dental work to those who don’t have dental insurance or may not be fortunate enough to visit the dentist regularly. There is no age limit and the dentists can perform procedures from a cleaning to extractions. “I think it’s really interesting what they can do with it. Kids usually think dentistry is just looking at teeth and it’s so much more than that. Teeth are so important to the body that it’s a fascinating feature,” said eighthgrader Mia West. This is the second year the dental clinic has done this program. The clinic has been happy with the success of the program and is hoping to keep it going for years to come.

Children decorated cookies to set out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve during the Cookies with Santa event at Boardman Park on Dec. 21. The sold out event brought in more than 40 children and close to 100 guests total. Children spent the event rolling out cookie dough, cutting it into shapes, baking the cookies and then using frosting and sprinkles to decorate them. “It’s a great opportunity for families to come and have their tradition of making
cut out cookies, decorating them, all that fun and leaving us the mess,” said recreation director Karen McCallum. After the children rolled out the dough and cut them into shapes, the staff and volunteers at Boardman Park would bake the cookies. While the cookies were baking the children could write a letter to Santa and decorate a to-go box for the cookies. In the adjoining room, there were green waffles being made for guests to eat while watching “The Grinch.” Some of the children have been coming for years, while others this was their first
year. “I’ve never been here before, I’m looking forward to eating the cookies,” said fifthgrader Shaelen Williams. When the cookies finished baking, the children would go to a table and use different colored frosting and sprinkles to decorate the cookies. Some of the children said they were going to eat their cookies while others said they were going to set them out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Cookies with Santa is a tradition at Boardman Park, allowing families to start their own traditions and spend time together.

Shepherd of the Valley resident Larry Fenn visits the children of Austintown Community Church Preschool as Santa.
Santa visits Austintown Community Church Preschool Shepherd of the Valley - Howland resident Larry Fenn had no idea that growing his beard out would lead to a new alter ego. Many years ago, Fenn grew his beard during the summer. A friend suggested he should try his hand at playing Santa Clause. He thought she was joking, but shortly after, she made him a full Santa suit. Fenn began to visit local nursing homes in an effort to spread holiday cheer. His wife would dress as Mrs. Clause and accompany him as the residents would visit with him. He enjoyed playing Santa so much that he began visiting private homes. “I remember visiting two young boys and seeing them peeking out the windows when I pulled into the driveway. They ran out of the house to see me. It was a lot of fun to bring joy to so many people,” Fenn remembered fondly. Fenn has dressed as Santa several times at Shepherd of the Valley - Howland, greeting visi-
tors and taking pictures with them by the Christmas tree. While he enjoyed it, he missed visiting children. On Dec. 22, Shepherd of the Valley arranged for Fenn to visit the children at Austintown Community Church Preschool. He was able to relive his favorite pastime just in time for Christmas. He lit up as the children told him what they wanted. The visit was a dream come true for both Fenn and the children. Shepherd of the Valley part icipates i n Second W i nd Dreams, an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams. In 2014, Second Wind Dreams recognized Shepherd of the Valley as one of the top five organizations participating in the program.
