Robinwood students raise money, pie the principal By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The students of Robinwood Lane Elementary School had the rare opportunity to pie their principal in the face on Dec. 22. This was a reward for the students hard work while fundraising. Ten luck y st udent s who helped raise funds for the PTA were picked randomly to throw a whipped cream pie at Robin-

wood Lane Principal Donald Robinson. The pie tins were filled with whipped cream so that real pie crumbs would not get in Robinson’s nose or eyes. The students were notified ahead of time about the pie in the face event. It served as an initiative for the students to help raise more money. “We did a PTA fundraiser to raise money for the school and we put all the names of the kids that participated in the fund-

raiser in a box and picked ten out,” said Robinson. “It was kind of a pay the piper type thing. We said we would do it, we did it.” The event was streamed live to the other students in the school. Some of the students helped out the filming by working the cameras. The students whose names were picked out of the box all stood in a line in preparation to pie their principal. Robinson was not the only option the stu-

dents had, Mrs. F. volunteered her face to be pied as well. It was a pretty even split between the two, half of the students chose Robinson while the other half chose Mrs. F. The students and faculty had a fun time with this event. It was a good way to end the school week with before leaving for winter break. The PTA also benefited from this event by being able to raise money for the school.

Fitness Fun story time Join the Boardman library on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. for stories and activities selected from the “Eat, Play, Grow” program. This event will focus on good fun and good nutrition. Prizes and snacks will be given. This event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Kids Coalition and is for toddlers and preschoolers.

Group presents mini grant to family The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley announced the presentation of this year’s Mike Hull Memorial Family Mini Grant. The $500 award, in the form of a mini-trampoline, safety net and a variety of other holiday gifts for the children, was presented to Jimmy Hughes in a ceremony at the family’s Boardman home. “My son Jimmy is so excited to have a new trampoline because he loves to bounce,” said Davida Hughes, the mother of the 3-year-old with autism spectrum disorder. Experts believe this can be an effective therapy for ASD. In addition to offering her son an outlet to expel his energy, the jumping reduces anxiety and improves concentration. “It’s amazing what kids on that spectrum can do on a trampoline that they might not have been able to without that sensory input,” Hughes said. “You see kids going from disengaged and noncommunicative to making eye contact and being more aware of what’s going on. We are so grateful that he was selected to receive this.” “It is a Christmas present for us to be able to help this young family,” said Melissa Kalaman, Chairperson of the Mini Grant Review Committee and sister of the memorial’s namesake. “Giving him the opportunity to engage more effectively could be life changing for him. That is exactly the kind of gift that my brother, Mike, would have been proud to be involved in.” In 2014, Kalaman and her

family initiated the effort with the Autism Society to create the Family Mini Grant with proceeds from the Annual Mike Hull Memorial Poker Run for Autism, which takes place every August. This year, more than 60 motorcyclists took part in the twocounty ride in honor of Mike Hull, a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather with a cherished granddaughter on the autism spectrum. The allday event featured an 80-mile motorcycle ride that visited six establishments in Mahoning and Columbiana Counties. It kicked off with a breakfast and

bike blessing, and ended with a live concert and pasta dinner. Throughout the day, Strikers offered free bowling for any children or adults with special needs. Planning is underway for the next event in August 2016. The Mike Hull Mini Grant Review Committee feels the family mini grants are an important way to support families affected by autism who struggle with costs of therapies and treatments year round. The group offers an open application period every November so that they can assist with needs around seasonal holidays.

Boy Scouts and their leaders from Boy Scout Troop 60 presented the International Peace Light flame to the congregation of Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman during the St. Lucia Festival and Children’s Christmas Pageant Service on Dec. 13.

Boy Scouts share the International Peace Light in the Valley With the arrival of the International Peace Light on Nov. 30, at the Greater Western Reserve Boy Scout Council office in Warren, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts were busy distributing the Peace Light flame to churches and their friends and families in the Valley. The Peace Light flame was available at the council office to anyone of any faith throughout the weeks before Christmas. Many people came from all over northeast Ohio to receive the flame and return to their homes and share it with their churches. Two deliveries made by Boy Scouts occurred at the JMJ Spiritual Connections II store in the Cornersburg area of Youngstown and Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman. On Dec. 4, Scouts from Boy

Scout Troop 22 from St. Christine’s Church transferred the flame to the owners of the Spiritual Connections II store, Dora Jean and Stephan Havrila, who for the third year had the flame available to anyone in the community during their normal business hours. People from as far as Salem came to the store to receive the flame. On Dec. 13, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 60 from Westminster Presbyterian Church transferred the flame during the St. Lucia Festival and Children’s Christmas Pageant at Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman. Abrianna cut her dinosaur feeting using the blue paper. The children got to choose what color paper they wanted their feet to be.

Dinosaurs return for story time By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The night owl story time at the Boardman library on Dec. 29 was all about dinosaurs. The weekly event always offers a different theme for the children to learn about. Librarian Allie Graff started out story time by having the children make their own dinosaur feet that they could wear throughout the event. The children cut the feet out of foam paper and cut holes in them to put their feet through. Each child

had a different color set of dinosaur feet. Story time started with the song “Dinosaurs Are in Their Eggs,” set to the tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” When the song was over, the first book read was “Dinosaur vs. the Library,” by Bob Shea. Graff had this children roaring along with her during certain parts of the book. The next song was “Dino Diddy,” set to the tune of “Do Wah Diddy.” The children didn’t catch on to this song as easily as the first, but still giggled as they

tried to keep up with Graff and sing. To keep up with the theme, Graff told the children some dinosaur jokes. She mentioned that there are books in the library that are full of jokes about dinosaurs. Graff then started her favorite story, “Brontorina” by James Howe. During the story, the children were encouraged to try the ballet moves that Brontorina was doing. See DINOSAUR, Page 9

Abrianna, Samantha and Autumn colored their dinosaur coloring sheets after story time was over. The children used crayons to color their T-rex picture.

DINOSAUR Continued from Page 8

The final activity allowed the children to be archaeologists and search through a bowl to find bones. Once the bones were all found, the children matched them to the letters on the board and formed a Tyrannosaurs Rex. To end story time, the children colored a T-rex coloring sheet.

“I’m so happy we came when we did,” said one mother. “We are looking forward to next week.” The next night owl story time will be on Jan. 5 at the Boardman library and it will be New Year theme. Time capsules will be made and the children will fill out a favorite things of 2015 sheet to put in there. “The kids will be able to keep it here and come back in a year to look at it,” said Graff.
