Holly, jolly Christmas concert at Poland Union By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland Union Elementary School hosted its Christmas show dress rehearsal on Dec. 21 at Poland Seminary High School in preparation for the real show later that evening. Dean Wilson is the choir director who worked hard in putting everything together to make sure it runs smoothly. The stage was set up with a snowman for the students to put together, candles to be lit and several other toys and props. “We’ve got Frosty, we’ve got candles, we’ve got instruments for elves, snowballs to throw and dancing presents,” said Wilson. The kindergarten students were the first to take the stage. One of the students, Katie, who sang “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” also appeared in a previous show, “Miracle of 34th Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci Street.” Ella, Carter, Jonathen and Analise held up the plates their class decorated. The plates were raffled off at their See CONCERT, Page 4

After the kindergarten students finished, the six first-grade classes rushed to the stage to prepare for their performance. There was a Santa Claus and his two elves, Holly and Jolly. As Wilson narrated, Santa and his elves acted out the story. The first-graders lined up on the three risers and each row of students sang their own few songs. There were dancing presents, dancing reindeer and Rudolph the Red-Nosed reindeer made an appearance. Some of the students, who dressed as elves, got to play a few instruments during one of the songs. Plates made by the students were also going to be raffled off during the program. Each class voted on a theme for the plates. Once Mr. Masucci, principal, drew the outline on the plates, the students used their fingers dipped in paint to decorate the plates. All of the money earned from the raffle will be given back to the PTO and students for other programs and activities.

Boy Scouts share the International Peace Light in the Valley With the arrival of the International Peace Light on Nov. 30, at the Greater Western Reserve Boy Scout Council office in Warren, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts were busy distributing the Peace Light flame to churches and their friends and families in the Valley. The Peace Light flame was available at the council office to anyone of any faith throughout the weeks before Christmas. Many people came from all over northeast Ohio to receive the flame and return to their homes and share it with their churches. Two deliveries made by Boy Scouts occurred at the JMJ Spiritual Connections II store in the Cornersburg area of Youngstown and Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman. On Dec. 4, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 22 from St. Christine’s Church transferred the flame to the owners of the Spiritual Connections II store, Dora Jean and Stephan Havrila, who for the third year had the flame available to anyone in the community during their normal business hours. People from as far as Salem came to the store to receive the flame. Children howl with excitement By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Mill Creek Metroparks hosted a Big Bad Wolf event for children ages 3-6 on Jan. 7 at the Ford Nature Center. The focus of this month’s program was wolves. The class was led by Mill Creek Metroparks naturalists

Hillary Lenton and Julie Bartolone. The children began the event by coloring a picture of a wolf to get them prepared for the class. To give the children more informed on wolves, instead of having a story, Lenton and Bartolone put on a short skit. Bartolone performed with a wolf

puppet and Lenton wore a red cape to pretend to be Little Red Riding Hood. “The kids are going to learn the truth from the fable in stories,” said Bartolone. The skit was set up as an interview. Lenton, as Little Red RidSee WOLF, Page 8

will be four presenters who will have four minutes to share their idea on their project proposal, which will help the community in some way. Attendees will have the chance to vote on their favorite soup, enjoy a 50/50 raffle and participate in a silent auction of donated goodies from the Valley’s finest businesses. At the end of the night the ballots are counted and the winner takes home the proceeds raised from the dinner to carry out their project. During the next event they will present to the community how they carried out their project. The event takes place at the Calvin Center, located at 755 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, on Jan. 30 from 6-9 p.m.

So we have around 30 people coming, we are hoping to get some more people to join,” said Spagnola. Around 50 guests, consisting of members and their families, attended the Christmas party. Having a gathering outside of their monthly meeting allowed the guests to catch up with each other after the holidays without having to discuss business like they would at their monthly meetings. Spagnola is actively looking for more members to join the American Legion Boardman Post 565 to keep the history and traditions of the Post continuing.

ing Hood, would ask Bartolone, the wolf, questions about wolves. Bartolone would explain what is real about wolves versus what people read in stories. The skit was a fun way for children to learn rather than being told facts from a sheet of paper. After the skit, the children worked on making their own wolf masks. They colored in a

wolf face, cut out the shape and glued it to stick. This allowed the children to hold the mask up to their faces and pretend to be wolves before they went outside for their last activity. “We are going to take the kids outside and be a pack of wolves. Julie will be the alpha wolf and hunt as a pact. We hid stuffed animals on the trail,” said Lenton. When the children finished making their masks, they went outside to pretend to be a pack of wolves. Stuffed animals were

hidden around the trail at Ford Nature Center and the children had to follow Bartolone to hunt for the stuffed animals that served as their food. The program finished with the children splitting up into two packs. One pack would try to intimate the other pack of wolves that were trying to move into their homes. Ford Nature Center hosts different monthly programs to allow children to engage in educational activities about nature and wildlife.

The Poland library hosted one of their weekly yoga classes on Jan. 6, led by Sue Trimacco. The class is a Breathe and Bond Stress Reduction yoga class and is sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (FPLYMC). “This is a stress reduction program, we have it every Wednesday,” said Trimacco. Trimacco greets every person who walks in the door to make them feel welcomed. Creating an accepting environment allows the participants to feel more open and comfortable with each other. Many of the participants are regulars to try

to come to the class every week. Each class lasts an hour and has a $10 fee per class. There is a range of benefits for the participants who engage in the yoga class. Yoga can help improve sleep and health, while decreasing blood pressure, cortisol levels and anxiety. Before the class begins, Trimacco turns the lights off and lights a couple candles to make the room feel more relaxing. She teaches several techniques and various poses that help increase endurance and strength and strengthen the nervous system. The FPLYMC hosts several programs at all of the libraries in Mahoning county to encourage the community to utilize the libraries and see what they have to offer.
